Over the years, more than 50 Kwantlen instructors have supported TALK. This means that all of the courses are offered at minimal cost – generally $10 per session or perhaps $30 for a four-session course. Most classes take place at the Surrey and Richmond campuses of Kwantlen Polytechnic University, but there are also off-site opportunities

The curriculum is developed according to the interests of TALK members and the community at large. Since the “elder college” was initiated in 1997, the program has grown steadily. More than 130 students attended the seven courses offered in 2000. Last spring, 520 learners enjoyed 20 different courses. “Back to school” isn’t just for kids and college students – class action is also underway for their elders. TALK – Third Age of Learning at Kwantlen – is again offering creative and enlightening learning experiences for adults aged 50 and over. It’s all about the simple joy of learning without the hassle of homework, tests, grades or prerequisites. “Basically, it’s Kwantlen’s commitment to lifelong learning,” says TALK board member Linda Coyle. “As people get older, they still want stimulating and interesting learning opportunities without having to do homework or write tests.” Courses run the gamut: literary lunches, music appreciation, hypnosis, cognitive enhancement and even The Great Depression. They are always taught by experts – including current and retired Kwantlen Polytechnic University instructors – who share their expertise

Memory loss not a normal sign of aging

P U B L I C N OT I C E

Notice of Temporary Commercial Use Permit The Council of the City of Surrey proposes to pass a resolution to issue a Temporary Commercial Use Permit, pursuant to the provisions of the Local Government Act, at the Regular Council - Public Hearing meeting in the Council Chamber at City Hall, 14245 - 56 Avenue, Surrey, B.C., on Monday, October 1, 2012, commencing at 7:00 p.m.. PERMIT NO. 7912-0237-00 APPLICANT: 0912712 B.C. Ltd. c/o Calvary Worship Centre A Ministry of Standard Bearers International (Sam Owusu) 260 12th Street New Westminster, BC V3M 4H2 ADDRESS: 11125 - 124 Street PURPOSE: To allow for an assembly use limited to 4,920 square metres of gross floor area for a period not to exceed three (3) years.

s people age, some forgetfulness A is natural and inevitable. Some folks might, for example, “lose” the car keys or other household objects, or forget where they heard something and/or who told them. Those usually aren’t causes for concern. But Delta families who are seeing their family members struggle with loss of memory, difficulty with day-to-day tasks, and changes in mood and behaviour could be dealing with something more serious. “People may think these symptoms are part of normal aging, but they aren’t,” explains Anthony Kupferschmidt, the local support and education coordinator for the non-profit Alzheimer Society of B.C. Those symptoms could well be indicators of Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias. The health issues are becoming more common. Already, one in four Canadians has

someone in their family with Alzheimer’s disease. And every five minutes a Canadian develops dementia. “If you have concerns about your memory, or are concerned about someone else, it is important that you consult with your family doctor,” says Kupferschmidt. The society can also help local caregivers who are living with dementia. It runs a free support and information group that serves as a forum for sharing practical tips and strategies for coping with the disease. The group helps create support and friendship with others whose lives are affected by dementia. For more information contact Kupferschmidt at 604-238-7390 or anthonyk@alzheimerbc.org. For more information on Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, visit the Alzheimer Society of B.C. website at www.alzheimerbc.org.

at no charge. “All of our presenters volunteer their time,” adds Coyle. “They really enjoy being with participants who are keenly interested in the subject – they aren’t there because they have to be; they’re there because they want to be.”

Over the years, more than 50 Kwantlen instructors have supported TALK. This means that all of the courses are offered at minimal cost – generally $10 per session or perhaps $30 for a four-session course. Most classes take place at the Surrey and Richmond campuses of Kwantlen Polytechnic University, but there are also off-site opportunities

this fall including tours of the Ismaili Centre in Burnaby and the Surrey Centre Library, dim sum sampling in a Richmond restaurant and an intriguing journey into the mysteries of Bill Reid’s Jade Canoe at the Vancouver Airport. The curriculum is developed according to the interests of TALK members and the community at large. Since the “elder college” was initiated in 1997, the program has grown steadily. More than 130 students attended the seven courses offered in 2000. Last spring, 520 learners enjoyed 20 different courses. In addition to more than 50 Kwantlen instructors who have generously provided informative courses, TALK also depends on community volunteers to teach, to sit on the board, to develop programming and facilitate courses.
