CELEBRATING 35 YEARS 1977 It All Started in Abbotsford

1977 - Hank Funk started manufacturing and installing truck caps in British Columbia. His first store located in Abbotsford then called Rover Recreation grew rapidly with the addition of recreational products. Wife Elaine worked alongside her husband as accountant. Year after year Funk would add new products to his truck canopy store with items such as RV parts, Billiard tables, Trampolines, Swimming pool supplies, Hot tubs and even Ultralight Airplanes. In spite of fierce competition, Funk’s company prospered because of his commitment to quality, value and professionalism.

1990 - Funk decided to franchise the truck accessory side of the business and change the name from Rover to Capit®. Cap-it® began to offer franchise opportunities, expanding carefully to ensure future success. The success of the franchises has been based not only on providing accessories to grow the market, but also on the mentor-style of management and a proven system to run the business and market the product.

I want to thank the people of Abbotsford for their patronage and support during these 35 years. “I remember the first store and the fun I had serving the people of Abbotsford”.

Now with a little more time on his hands Funk is giving back to the community that helped him so much in those early years. Funk is a board member of the Reach Gallery Museum and says, the reason why he’s involved with the Reach is simple, “as an artist and a businessman I know the power of art and what it did for my company. It helped me grow from 1 store to 22 and from a few people in the organization to over 200 - we grew because of our creativity, visual arts played a major role in our success, in our branding, our store design, our image, our marketing and our advertising. I know the power of visual arts and what it did for my company it can do for our City”.

It Takes Diversification – And More…

Like a bright beacon on a dreary day, a yellow F150 sits proudly angled outside a Cap-it Genuine Truckware location.

Sporting a 6-inch lift system, chrome plated stainless grille guard, and Mickey Thompson 32-inch tires, it’s hard to believe that just 20 years ago the truck accessories market was next to non-existent. Today the light truck accessory retail sector alone according to SEMA has climbed to earn over $27 billion US, and from the early days of this increasingly popular product segment Cap-it Genuine Truckware has been leading the way.

1996 – Sons Mason & Andrew take a serious role in the company. Growing up in the industry and constantly being associated with lovely chrome trucky things, the boys encouraged dad to carry on. They had seen first-hand the difficulties of starting a franchise and taking it to the next level. Funk willingly says the boys added that extra energy needed to take the franchise across Canada.

2004 - Cap-it hires two of Canada’s leading retail architects and interior designers in an effort to bring their concept to the forefront. Together with Funk’s art skills they came up with one of the best designed truck accessory stores in the industry.

2005 - The first signature store was built in Coquitlam and soon followed with an 11,000 sq ft store in Richmond. The diversification of products such as Suspension, Lift kits, Tires and Wheels, Thule Racking added to their huge success.

2011 - Mason is now the president of Western Warehouse and Andrew is president of the chain of the Cap-it stores.

2006 - In an effort to serve the ever growing Cap-it system a 52,000 sq foot warehouse and corporate office facility was built, located in Gloucester Estates, Langley BC. The warehouse stocks more than 60,000 part numbers making it one of the largest truck accessory warehouses in Canada. The facility also includes Cap-it’s education center, where franchisee operators can come for further education and training.
