Hundreds of people spent Sunday touring farms in the Alberni Valley as part of the Family Farms Day put on by parks and recreation.

The high numbers of young people were heartening to farmers like Wayne Smith of Vancouver Island Grain and Milling, and Ann Collins of Arrowvale Farm.

“There were so many kids here; that was the best part,” Smith said. He offered hands-on displays like riding tractors and rolling oats.

Collins figures 500 people visited her farm, many of them families with children.

“We were just nonstop for the whole time,” she said.

“It was well received and I heard really good reports from it.

It’s very educational and we really need that, because there doesn’t seem to be an awareness of agriculture here.”

Stamp roadwork continues WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

Traffic is slow going at Stamp Avenue and Roger Street as city workers strive to finish road repairs in the next two weeks, city engineer Guy Cicon said.

Workers are replacing a 220-metre long sewer force main pipe along Stamp Avenue. “This is to resolve the leaks that have occurred in the pipe over the last four years,” Cicon said.

South-bound traffic is free flowing but the north-bound lanes have been closed. Lanes in both directions are open in the evening, he said.

Some of the work was done at night so workers could breach the intersection when traffic was low, Cicon said.

The work is a continuation of repairs done earlier this year on the same section of pipe at Third Avenue and Redford Street. Relief from the traffic delays will be short-lived as another section of pipe has yet to be replaced, Cicon said.

The work is being undertaken because the 50-year-old pipe is worn on the inside at the bends in the pipe, Cicon said. The new pipe is made out of polyethylene and is expected to last considerably longer.

Farmer helps with new fruit harvesting program SUSAN QUINN ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

Eden Tree Farm is collaborating with Alberni Valley Bear Smart to offer a fruit gleaning program this fall for people who have fruit trees in their yards.

The program has two objectives: to prevent fruit from collecting under trees and attracting bears into residential areas, and to donate unwanted fruit to food banks so the food doesn’t go straight to the landfill.

“This is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time,” Eden Tree Farm owner Heather Shobe said. The Bear Smart organization had access to funding that Shobe didn’t, and by teaming up with them she was able to set up the program.

Bear Smart provided the structure and paperwork and Shobe will co-ordinate the harvesting.

The fruit will be donated to the Port Alberni Friendship Centre, Salvation Army, the homeowner and volunteer pickers.

“We’ve had a lot of interest,” Shobe said.

“We think it’s going to grow as it goes on.

We’re still looking for volunteers, anyone with trees and anyone with things that will help with harvesting like ladders, trucks, picking baskets.”

Media reports no punishment Stakes go up in province’s gas gamble “They’ve been punished by the media coverage.”

This phrase, or variations of it, is often used by defence lawyers lobbying for lighter sentences for their clients.

It’s been heard time and again in sentencing submissions for all manner of cases – from those for impaired drivers who strike and kill pedestrians, to last week’s sentencing in Surrey Provincial Court of a woman who pleaded guilty to stealing dogs.

We even hear it from judges who render their decisions, noting that the guilty parties have already suffered prior to sentencing.

Indeed, anyone accused of a crime who is unlucky enough to get unwanted media attention pays a price. Some readers or viewers no doubt will rush to judgment, convinced that only the guilty get charged.

Sadly, this is not always the case.

However, once a guilty plea is entered or a conviction rendered, it should be incumbent on the courts to consider any suffering caused by public scrutiny to be off-limits when sentencing.

The argument in court is almost always along the lines that news reports caused the offender embarrassment – word got out that they broke the law. The question that must be asked is, what exactly did the guilty parties think would happen? Did they only decide to break the law because they thought no one would find out? And that if anyone did find out, that no one would call them on it?

It is an ignorant and arrogant stance.

The media exists to inform the public of what is happening in their communities; to help recognize those who do well and hold accountable those who choose to act outside the law. There is a simple way to minimize discomfort: don’t break the law.

ICTORIA – Mike de Jong’s debut as B.C. finance minister was a grim one. The first financial update for this election year projects a $1.4 billion decline in natural resource revenues from Kevin Falcon’s one and only budget in February.

Most of that is from declining natural gas revenues in the next three years. And it’s not just the price of gas that’s lower than the finance ministry’s array of private sector experts had forecast.

The volume of B.C. gas sold is down as well, as abundant new sources of shale gas come on-stream in the U.S. As with oil, that’s currently the only market Canada has.

And it wasn’t long ago that the energy ministry was trumpeting its monthly totals for “bonus bids” paid by gas

companies for drilling rights in northeastern B.C. That gold rush has wound down as shale deposits are staked and the price falls.

De Jong’s response shows how serious this problem is for any B.C. government. He inherits Falcon’s political commitment to present a balanced budget next spring. How he will do that, and be believed in a heated postHST election campaign, remains a mystery.

De Jong announced a hiring freeze for government staff, and a management salary freeze across health care, universities and Crown corporations as well as government operations.

He hinted at an even harder line with unions, as the government’s largest employee group continued selective strike action.

This, and the familiar vow to rein in travel and other discretionary spending, won’t come close to replacing the lost gas revenues. Asset sales, which Falcon came up with in a desperate effort to dig the government out of its huge sales tax hole, won’t show up on the books until next year, if they go ahead at all. Raising taxes or fees?

Forget it. It’s either cut programs or run another deficit.

The one glimmer of hope in what de Jong called the “ugly” resource revenue picture is that natural gas revenues don’t have much farther to fall. And then there is the light at the far end of the tunnel, exports to Asia where the price remains much higher.

That project took two important steps forward last week. Spectra Energy and British multinational BG Group unveiled plans

for a third major pipeline to bring northeast gas to the coast, this one to a site near Prince Rupert proposed for a liquefied natural gas facility.

And on Friday, the Haisla Nation and the B.C. government announced a land use agreement to develop another LNG export facility on the Douglas Channel near Kitimat. Two proposals in that area have already received federal export permits and financing from global energy players, including Chinese, Japanese and Korean companies.

One of the bills jammed through by the B.C. Liberals in the hectic legislative session this spring was to do away with another of those federal-provincial overlaps that make industrial development so slow and difficult.

Ottawa has sole authority to regulate reserve lands, but agreed to delegate that to B.C. and the Haisla, allowing them to pioneer the latest agreement.

Toy Run was great, say mainland riders To the Editor, Last weekend the executive director of the Lower Mainland Christmas Bureau and I, as the secretary had the privilege of attending the Port Alberni Motorcycle Toy Run. We wish to thank the Toy Run committee, the residents, and businesses for an incredibly good time. It was very impressive to see the entire community show their support for such a worthwhile cause. Kudos to all for your hospitality and

friendship.

We were able to discuss logistics with the Toy Run committee and came away feeling wiser for it and also for the friendliness shown to us.

It is our understanding that more riders than ever before participated this year. Being riders and participants ourselves, I understand why the event is so successful.

Gas wars hot air for Liberals From / 8 This is a major breakthrough, not just in the industrial development of northern B.C. but in dismantling the century-old logjam of aboriginal resource claims.

At the centre of Premier Christy Clark’s muchpromoted jobs plan is the target of having three LNG export terminals and

associated pipelines in production by 2020.

That now looks like a more realistic target. But the jobs and revenues won’t arrive in time to save the B.C. Liberals from their current predicament.

Mailbag: Feedback on news items Old ADSS pics worth saving To the Editor, I attended an ADSS ‘56 Grad reunion luncheon a few days ago held in Richmond and took along some interior photos of Port Alberni’s new high school I’d taken while on a tour with Sarah Falls, the school’s (ADSS) music director.

All those viewing the photos were extremely impressed with the beautiful building.

However, a classmate at the reunion mentioned that the graduation class photos that were hung each year in the old ADSS since the opening of the school would not be mounted in the new building.

The reason given was something about lack of wall space and the photos not being aesthetically acceptable.

Most, including myself were quite dismayed.

Later, coming home

on the ferry there was a group of Port Alberni retirees returning from a bus trip to Banff.

Once again the new school was discussed and one of them who’d attended the spring open house of the old school mentioned that the grad class photos would be boxed and buried.

My opinion, and that of many others, is that this decision should be reversed.

When I taught at the high school there was a committee that worked diligently with some success to contact alumni in hopes of raising more scholarship funds.

Their connection to the Alberni Valley in many cases comes through the memories these photos convey.

I know ADSS will be holding an open house before Christmas for citizens to view the new school.

No doubt many will be looking for and asking about the old grad photos.

I’m sure with some innovative architectural investigation, a way can be found to keep this ADSS heritage link in place. As the old cliché goes, “Look back to where you have been, for a clue to where you are going”.

Slacker MLA’s should go on EI To the Editor, Has Christy Clark noticed all those folks milling about the Legislature grounds?

No, not the tourists, I’m referring to the MLAs. The folks that many of us elected to represent us in government.

Since she seems to be working for her party interests in not recalling the Legislature, and our MLAs seem to be under-employed, might I suggest that our premier now receives her salary from your party, and the MLAs

collect “Employment Insurance”.

That, along with a roll back in her pensions and pay would do much to provide needed funds for our schools and health care.

I hope Clark enjoys her holidays. I look forward to election day.

Fewer execs frees up money To the Editor, B.C’s Interior Health “Authority” apparently doesn’t have the money to pay for doctors to staff Kaslo’s E.R. But an unofficial audit of that same Health Authority’s ‘executive team’ illustrates exactly where the money to pay for needed hospital staff may be going: to pay executive salaries, and presumably perks, bonuses, and healthy tax-payer funded pensions.

For what?

It basically only takes a few chiefsof-staff, a director of nursing, doctors, nurses, and a supportive auxilliary staff to provide health-care.

We don’t need corporate entities with degrees in political science, business, and commerce.

What do we need with “Vice Presidents of Community Integration”, “People & Clinical Services”, and “Allied Health & Planning & Strategic Services”.

When there’s more money freed up to hire the necessary staff to eliminate surgical, treatment and diagnostic waiting lists the physicians we so badly need will come flooding back to the province.

They’ll finally have the resources and personnel to truly ply their craft and look after everyone’s medical needs in B.C. As it should be.

Owner turfs Beaufort development plans WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

Plans for a new commercial residential unit at the Beaufort Hotel are off, owner Paul Saroya said.

“I couldn’t get the financing. It’s not going to go. The bank wouldn’t go for it,” Saroya said.

Saroya’s plans for the property on the corner of Fourth Avenue and Angus Street included a six-storey building with 74 residential units that would have been geared towards seniors’ assisted

living. There were plans for office and retail space as well.

Instead, Saroya said he plans to renovate the existing building by adding kitchens, sinks and fridges, as well as a small office or retail space. “I didn’t get financing for the other project so I’m going to renovate what I have,” Saroya said.

Financing for the new renovations has yet to be made. Once done, the reno should take approximately four months, he said.

Saroya applied to Port Alberni City Council two years ago for the rebuild

and received a development permit.

Last February, council granted him a one-year permit extension.

Saroya originally asked council for the extension on Jan. 9 so he could organize project financing.

But council tabled the request pending Saroya’s tearing down the burned out building he owns across the street. The building has since been demolished.

News that Saroya isn’t going to proceed with his development caught Coun. Cindy Solda by surprise.

“This is very

disappointing but why am I not surprised?”

Solda and Wendy Kerr pressed for a six-month extension and voted no to a one year extension, which passed.

Solda said she feels sorry for tenants; in some cases the Beaufort represents the only place they can live.

“I really wanted to be proven wrong that the development shouldn’t have gone ahead for the their sake,” she said.

Solda said she intends to raise the issue with council but that their hands may be tied by the

extension. “He’s got a year, which isn’t up, so there may be nothing we can do until then,” Solda said.

City planner Scott Smith said Saroya may or may not need a building permit to undertake his new plan.

“If you’re just changing out the flooring that doesn’t require a permit,” Smith said. “But if he’s doing extensive plumbing and electrical work, then building and fire codes apply and he needs to come in and be very specific.” reporter@albernivalleynews.com Twitter.com/AlberniNews

There, firemen took minutes to douse a blaze in a room on the second floor.

The building sustained smoke and water damage, but the sprinkler system

prevented the fire from growing.

“It did its job,” Jancowski said.

The fire displaced approximately 12-15 tenants, who were housed in alternative accommodations

for four nights via emergency social services.

More permanent accommodations are in place now, said BC Housing outreach worker Mark Cairney.

Residents are anxious and under stress about their situation and some with health issues have a problem with things like stairs at their new accommodations.

“But there’s not exactly an overabundance of housing in town so this is it,” he said.

Mental health and addictions workers attended to the fire scene and have helped tenants with medication and personal needs, Cairney said.

Officials have determined that the cause of the fire is human, but Jancowski couldn’t say exactly how.

Building owner Paul Saroya said restoration crews have been busy since last weekend repairing damage to the building.

Crews are waiting for the inside to dry before an electrician can come in to perform repairs, Saroya said. After repairs are made, the building has to be inspected before tenants will be allowed back in.

According to Saroya, the fire started in one of the rooms. While the sprinkler system contained the fire, there were problems with it afterward. “It didn’t completely shut off after and water leaked all over and through the ceiling,” he said.

Electrical and water leakage problems are delaying the re-opening of the pool at Echo Aquatic and Fitness Centre.

On Sept. 14, the building’s main underground electrical system failed.

Staff installed a temporary overhead service, Parks and Recreation manager Scott Kenny said.

The failed system was originally installed in 1967 when the pool opened, Kenny said. A new underground system will be installed before the pool opens again, he added.

The cause of the failure hasn’t been determined and the issue is still under investigation.

On another front, new lockers have been installed in the men’s and women’s change rooms.

Council nears building bylaw City council is poised to take action on derelict and nuisance buildings.

City Planner Scott Smith said that the Community Charter allows for action to be taken on such buildings, but local officials must prove their case.

Boat trip a perfect day for candid photos NORMAN SILVERSTONE

y wife’s birthday present to me was a trip on the MV Frances Barkley, up the Alberni Inlet to Ucluelet and back.

We boarded at 7:30 a.m. and took off at 8 a.m. I had my trusty Nikon ready with the wonderful 10–20mm wide-angle (15–30mm for 35mm film cameras) on and ready to go.

I started by shooting the boats in the harbour and then moved on to shooting the ship being loaded by the overhead crane.

I was shooting using the widest angle, the 10mm.

Here I was standing right at the edge of the dock and could easily get the workmen, the crane loading, and the deck of the ship. My specs were ISO 250, shutter speed 1/160 of a second, aperture f 6.3, RAW @ 19.8MB. We boarded and I used that wonderful lens to shoot on the deck, photographing the other passengers

(I caught a woman dabbing her face with sunscreen lotion in spots and smiling), the restaurant.

Everything looked so beautiful and perfect with that lens.

We chatted to the “yellow jackets”, volunteer ambassadors Bob and Ingo; they really do an incredible selling job on beautiful Port Alberni. Of course I photographed them, but I waited until I had the shot that I wanted rather than just blindly shooting.

I learned that lesson early on: take the shot that you want, not the “hurry up and take the darn shot” that people will say when they see the camera pointed at them.

I went around the ship taking photographs and spent time on the lower deck, out of the wind, shooting over the side. By that time I had exchanged my wide-angle lens for my 70–210, f4.0 lens. What shots I was getting: loading raw logs onto a ship at Coulson Mill, whale tops, whales blowing water, forked whales’ tails disappearing beneath the briny sea.

Quite a few whales were spotted. Captain Ed McDonald, bless him, went off the route so that we could get close up and take some photographs of the whales.

With the telephoto lens on my camera I should have had the shutter speed equal to the millimetre measure of the lens.

If I was using the 70mm lens I could get away with 1/60 of a second; with the telephoto lens zoomed to 150mm, the

The Bulldogs are seeing production from their top two lines, which Willison said is a good place to be so early in the season. Once other teams get a look at their top players the pressure will be on, especially when the Bulldogs are on the road; home teams get the advantage of last line change.

The Bulldogs are headed on the road for a three-game tilt beginning Friday night in Coquitlam (7 p.m. puck drop).

The road trip won’t be quite the bonding experience the team would like to see early in the season because the Bulldogs play three games in three days, including Langley Rivermen on Saturday (7:15 p.m.) and Surrey Eagles on Sunday (4 p.m.).

Willison said it’s unfortunate they don’t get a day off on the road to do some team building; he has tried to do some of that at home by taking the players out to Sproat Lake.

The Bulldogs continue to carry three goaltenders in Jay Deo, Adam Todd and Brad Rebagliati.

All three will see action on the road trip, Willison said.

“A lot of people are concerned about the three goaltenders.

We as a team feel we’re fortunate to have the three quality goaltenders that we have,” he said.

It was fairly quiet at Alberni Golf Course on Sunday, as we had a number on members playing in the interclub at Courtenay.

Our boys didn’t fair too well at Sunnydale losing 61/2 to 81/2.

Locally, the closet to the pin winners were, Bill Morin on No. 2, Gord Cutting pocketed $25 for the Charity Closest to the pin on No. 4. Gary Korven on No. 13 and Brett Parhar on No. 17. For his second shot on No. 11 it was Mark Anderson.

The hidden hole money of $463 is still unclaimed as there wasn’t an outright winner. Starting next week there will be two hidden holes.

Congratulations go out to Gary Korven for his hole- in- one on No. 17 a couple of weeks ago Next Sunday is the Toronto Dominion Bank Irish Four Ball event.

There will be four man teams, make up your own foursome and register in the pro. shop. The format is as follows: Hole one to five, you record the best net and gross score; Holes six to 10

record the best two net and gross scores; Holes 11-15 record the best three net and gross scores; Holes 16-18, record all four scores.

There will be a 8 a.m. shotgun start.

The usual $10 fee applies.

Ladies hack and whack Golf: | Ladies hack and whack their way to fun as eventful Alberni season finishes.

This title doesn’t sound very dignified for the game of golf, but that was the name of the game for Tuesday.

You come up with two separate nine hole scores by scrambling the numbers according to the instructions.

The best “whacker” we had was Patsy Gauthier who whacked up a score of 37.

Joan Thompson tied that with another 37.

In a class by herself with a “hacking” good score was Olga Kanigan. The low gross scorer was Carol Bouchard with a 94, and whose game

was good enough to take the low net placing as well.

Thompson managed to sneak in a tie for that position as well.

The match play wound down today and the winners are: A Division: First place winner is Anna Marie Krikke. Marie Randal is second and came in close on her heels. B Division finds Janice Cross in first place with Leona Fowler in second place.

Next week the Nine-Hole Division ladies and the 18-Hole Division ladies will join forces for a “whacking” good time and will play nine holes together followed by coffee and muffins.

Start time is 8:30 a.m. shotgun.

The year-end luncheon and awards

are closing in on us and will be held on Oct. 9 starting at 12 noon.

There will be a list circulating soon, so make sure your name is on it and you’re included.

Nine-Hole Division A-Divison: LaDonna Knutson had the Low Gross honours as well as having the fewest putts in this Division.

Kathy Toms came in with the low net.

B Division: Louise Berlinski came in with the low gross placing.

Lorraine Wilson had the low net. Lesley Anderson had the fewest putts to take the pot.

Kathy Toms had a stellar game and chipped one in on No. 12, then went on to par No. 17.

Number 17 seemed

to be a popular hole today as Katy Lekich and Nancy Clayton also parred it. Berlinski parred No. 13.

Speaking of great “hacking”, Marta Williamson earned “best overall gross score”, “lowest putts”, “chip-in”, and “birdie”. That’s a pretty impressive game which took place at Arrowsmith for their Interclub.

The nine hole Division is winding down quickly and will have it’s last leaque game on Oct. 2.

A reminder to all divisions about the closing luncheon on Oct. 9...and we can close out this “whack and hack” season with style.

Hepso tears it up Alberni Valley Bulldogs’ forward Lars Hepso picked up six points in the ‘Dogs’ home opener on Friday to vault into the B.C. Hockey League’s player of the week spot.

He is also leading the BCHL in scoring with 10 points.

plus three assists in the win on home ice.

The scoring outburst is the highest output for an individual so far in the 2012-13 season, according to a BCHL statement.

Hepso’s performance in the Bulldogs’ first two games of the season, both losses at the BCHL Showcase in

Chilliwack, caught the attention of National Hockey League and NCAA scouts.

Hepso is not the only Bulldog among the BCHL’s scoring leaders: team captain Ryan Lough was in third spot with two goals, five assists as the News went to press.

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of a dear wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and friend. Elaine passed peacefully at home with family by her side on Tuesday September 18, 2012. Predeceased by her parents Blair and Mary, first husband Joe Corbeil, brothers Norm and Garry Densmore, and half-sister Kaye Sharpe (Nova Scotia). Elaine is survived by her husband Bill Moore, son Justin Corbeil (Ashleigh), stepdaughters Denise Carter (Mike), Michelle Cyr (Blaine), stepson Dene Moore, brother Mel Densmore (Debbie), sister Donna Spencer (Larry), sister in law Irene Densmore, and numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Elaine loved God and her family dearly.

Elaine was born and raised in Port Alberni. She worked for Thunderbird Insurance since 1979, and was an active part of her Church and her community. Her gardens and her home have been an oasis for many people. Her love and compassion will be remembered by all. Elaine’s sense of humour and faith inspired us, right to the end of her life.

We will be having a celebration of Elaine’s life on Sunday, September 23 at 1:00 pm at the Alberni Athletic Hall 3727 Roger Street. Reception to follow. Flowers are gratefully declined. If you wish, a donation can be made in Elaine’s memory to ADRA Canada.

Band corrects contact number

People hoping to reach the Alberni Valley Community Band for more information about their Wednesday practice nights can call conductor Cory Miller at 250-7231285.

The band apologizes for passing on the wrong contact number last week for Miller.

The band meets Wednesdays at EJ Dunn Middle School’s band room from 7–9 p.m. and is looking for new members.

Flutes, saxophones, trumpets, French horns and trombones are needed but all instruments are welcome.

Musicians with the community band play all sorts of music in a lowpressure atmosphere.

Open house for Scot dancers

The Port Alberni Scottish Country Dancers are inviting the public to their first night of dancing for the season, Monday, Oct. 1 at Alberni Elementary from 7–9 p.m.

All that is required is a pair of soft-soled shoes or slippers and the desire to have fun while exercising mind and body.

The group welcomes new members and always ends the evening with coffee and a chat at Tim Hortons.

Blues fans would likely be horrified to think that Harpdog Brown started out emulating the Rolling Stones.

“I was a Stones fan,” says the Edmonton musician, “so I guess I was a fan of the original punks in rock.”

Brown was born in 1962, the year the Stones’ first album came out. Fascinated with their sound, he did a little research and discovered their first album was blues to the core. “There was one original Stones song and all the rest were blues covers,” he said.

“That shocked me into falling deep in love with the depth of the blues. The blues stole me from the Stones.”

Brown brings his blues show to the Rainbow Room in Port Alberni this Thursday, Sept. 20 along with Brandon Isaak, also known as Yukon Slim.

Brown grew up in a musical family—his mother played a lap steel guitar he called a “wee-wah” when he was a toddler. And although his mother tried to dissuade him from choosing music as a career, he began

performing in 1981 and hasn’t looked back.

Brown has shared the stage with such greats as Matt (Guitar) Murphy, Pinetop Perkins, Tim Williams, Kenny (Blues Boss) Wayne, the Powder Blue Band and more.

Brown doesn’t hold much water when it comes to awards— his was the only Canadian band to win the American Muddy Award in 1994, and he won a Canadian Juno Award in 1995— but there is one he is proud of. In 2012 his latest recording, Naturally, was voted No. 1 Canadian Blues Album by the Blind Lemon Blues survey.

Slim is one of the most sought after roots guitar players in the country. Critics say his affinity for the rawness and spontaneity of the blues is second to none. But he’s got an acoustic schtick that makes his sound so much more rounded.

The Rollin Art Centre is holding its first-ever starlit music night this Saturday, Sept. 22.

The garden terrace will be filled with fairy lights and the soft glow of tealight candles as Paul Kurucz and his daughters, Tatyanna and Jairynn, provide musical entertainment.

Starlight Serenade came about after Kurucz was in a carn accident in the summer and missed his performance at Tea on the Terrace, arts administrator Melissa Martin said.

“He offered to do a fundraiser for us,” she added.

Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and the music will run from 6–8 p.m.

Admission is only $5. Dress warmly, as this is an outside event. Coffee will be served. Seating will be limited.

Birth film fest begins at Char’s

during the month of August for Muscular Dystrophy Research and Mobility Grants.

The West Coast Doula Collective, a group of birth and post-partum doulas working with birthing families in the Alberni Valley and beyond, is sponsoring the Trust Birth Film Festival at Char’s Landing for the next six weeks.

The film fest opens with a simultaneous world premiere of One World Birth’s new film, Freedom for Birth. This film tells the story of the Hungarian midwife,

Agnes Gereb, who is jailed for supporting women giving birth at home despite a ruling by the European Human Rights Commission that all European women have the right to choose where and with whom they birth their babies.

All of the films are free of charge and open to all members of the public.

Wild Observations is the current art exhibit at the Rollin Art Centre, running until Oct. 16. This exhibit showcases a unique exhibit of paper collage, by artist Debbie Goodman.

The pieces Goodman creates are composed entirely from coloured and patterned specialty paper, which come from many countries of origin.

Goodman is passionate about wildlife and the conservation and animal welfare, as one will see in this wonderful collection.

Meet the artist at the gallery this Saturday, Sept. 22 from 1–3 p.m.

Bazaar kicks off fall season The West Coast |General Hospital Auxiliary will hold its annual Fall Bazaar on Saturday, Sept. 29th from 1–3 p.m.at Echo Centre.
