Early literacy development begins the moment a child is born.

Every touch, word and image helps to build the skills needed for children to become lifelong learners. Every child deserves the opportunity to succeed in whatever endeavours they choose and it is every parent’s wish to have their child grow to become a confident and resilient adult. The Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy (CBAL) recognizes that parents are the first and most important teachers in a child’s life and demonstrates that commitment by investing resources into community programming across the Columbia Basin.

CBAL reaches across the region, delivering and supporting programs that focus on providing parents and caregivers with the tools and knowledge needed to support their children’s physical, cognitive and social & emotional development.

In Valemount, Play and Learn is offered to families with preschool children. Participants discover ways to support emerging literacy skills through songs, stories, rhymes, sign language, crafts and everyday teaching opportunities, while children engage in facilitated, creative play. The connection a parent has with a child is unmistakeable and programs such as Play and Learn build on that connection to enhance the development of early literacy skills.

By the time a child starts kindergarten, they may know the alphabet, be familiar with the letters in their own names and even have begun to recognize simple words.

These skills are key milestones and family literacy programs, such as Parent-Child Mother Goose, Love 2 Learn and Alphabet Soup, aim to help further develop these skills.

Once a child enters school, parents want to be supportive as their children develop and

acquire new knowledge and skills. CBAL offers a number of family literacy programs designed to support this specific age group.

In Revelstoke, and other communities across the Columbia Basin, Parents as Literacy Supporters (PALS) has been offered in partnership with school districts. “PALS gives families a chance to connect with their Kindergarten teacher, and provides information, ideas, strategies and activities that can be used at home. PALS is a wonderful opportunity to bring together parents, teachers, and community as partners to support young children’s learning,” says Tracy Spannier, Community Literacy Coordinator in Revelstoke.

YOUR CITY....WORKING FOR YOU! Changes to City Garbage Collection Now In Effect

The City of Cranbrook will now only collect a maximum of three (3) garbage receptacles per week per household. The changes took effect on September 1, 2012 after City Council approved the amendment to the Solid Waste Collection bylaw at their regular meeting of August 13.

The intent of the amendments to the bylaw is to further encourage recycling and composting thereby reducing the amount of garbage required to be disposed of each week.

The Solid Waste Collection and Disposal bylaw also limits the size of receptacles (either containers or bags) to 100 litres and receptacles cannot weigh more than 20 kilograms each. Garbage containers are to have a water tight cover and smooth rim, must be in good structural and sanitary condition and have fixed handles. Plastic bags are to be securely tied closed at the top and be strong enough to withstand normal handling and lifting.

Free Transit Rides to Cranbrook Farmer’s Market This Summer

Enjoy the Cranbrook Farmers’ Market with free transit rides every Saturday morning from June 23 to October 6, 2012. The free ride comes with a catch: each passenger must be carrying a reusable or recycled bag, be traveling to and from downtown Cranbrook and indicate to their transit driver that they are attending the Cranbrook Farmers’ Market.

The City of Cranbrook is funding the free rides for all 16 Saturday markets. The Cranbrook Farmers’ Market runs 9 am to 1 pm, but the free bus rides are from 8:30 am to 1:30 pm. That gives early birds and last minute shoppers’ equal access to transit time.

Trips to and from the Cranbrook Farmers’ Market via BC Transit are for non-transferable passes only.

This innovative partnership between BC Transit and the City of Cranbrook also achieves five specific goals identified in the community’s long term sustainability plan – “Connecting to our Future.”

Isadore Canyon Trail Closed for Construction until November 1

Contractors employed by the City of Cranbrook are currently replacing portions of the sewage transfer line between the lagoons at the north end of the City and the spray irrigation storage ponds.

Residents and visitors are advised that sections of the Isadore Canyon Trail will be closed to the public until November 1, 2012. The public is asked to please avoid the use of the trail for the duration.

Submitted College of the Rockies is hosting two three-hour Introduction to Creative Writing workshops. These workshops are open to all youth and adults, but will be of particular interest to those who wish to enter the upcoming Kootenay Literary Competition.

The workshops will run in Fernie and Cranbrook on September 27 from 6:30 to 9:30 pm and will include exercises and discussions about self-editing and peer-editing. The workshops will be $20 for adults and free for youth 18 and under.

Angie Abdou’s workshop will take place at the Fernie Campus.

Angie has published three books.

Anything Boys Can Do was praised by the Victoria Times Colonist for its original take on female sexuality. The Bone Cage, a novel about Olympic athletes, was the inaugural One Book, One Kootenay as well as a 2011 Canada Reads finalist and 2012 MacEwen Book of the Year.

Her newest novel, The Canterbury Trail, was a finalist for the Banff

Mountain Book of the Year and winner of an independent publisher’s award (an Ippy).

Bob Wakulich has published fiction, nonfiction and poetry over the past thirty years in publications as diverse as Reader’s Digest and The Canadian Journal of Contemporary Literary Stuff. He also writes a column for the Cranbrook Daily Townsman.

Bob’s workshop will be at the College of the Rockies Cranbrook Campus in room S114.

All male fashion show brings nearly $9,000 to Cops for Kids On Wednesday September 12th, 2012 the Tamarack Centre hosted the annual All Male Fashion Show Fundraiser. Over 250 women and even a few gentlemen attended to cheer on members of the RCMP, the Koote-

DECK comes to theatre DECK: How I Instigated Then Overcame an Existential Crisis Through Home Improvement, stars Clive, a meticulous single parent of two who has been forced to reassess his future after taking major losses in the recent recession. He embraces a new start as a small town as an eco-conscious, ‘back-to-the-lander ’.

But Clive’s attempts at self-sufficiency are hijacked by a bad house purchase, and he is forced to try his hand at home improvement.

This show is not suitable for children.

Lucas Myers plays all of the characters in DECK and through voice changes and body mannerisms, convinces the audience he’s a 16-year-old girl, a 14-year-old boy, an uptight father, and a free spirit who’s maybe a little too free at times. The characters are hilarious and Myers has the audience laughing out loud at the characters’ antics.

Lucas Myers has been creating theatre since his graduation from the National Theatre School in 1998. Working with Theatre SKAM in Victoria, he has performed and composed music for many original plays.

In 2001 his interests turned to collaborative creation and he studied with the SITI Company of New York, returning to the West Coast to apply their techniques with like-minded artists.

Having relocated to Nelson, BC, he has dedicated his energy to creating a new work every year to be performed locally and toured to surrounding communities.

Myers created his own theatre company, Pilot. co.Pilot, a company committed to creating original work that reflects the audacity of the human spirit. By redefining the performance experience through audience interaction, music, and unconventional characterizations, it’s productions break through the audience/ performer bubble to reveal the dazzle behind the mundane and bring catharsis through exposing the heart beneath the hilarity.

Lucas Myers is at the Key City Theatre on Thursday, October 11 at 7:30 pm.

The first day of the

2012 Tim Hortons Smile Cookie campaign is seeing brisk

sales of delicious chocolate chip cookies leaving both Tim Hortons

outlets, table sales at the regional hospital by the Cranbrook Health Care Auxiliary and case sales through the East Kootenay Foundation for Health.

Together the three organizations are trying to match their record of last year by selling 75 cases ($10,500) of the colourful smile cookies to purchase a portable patient lift for the East Kootenay Regional Hospital. The patient lift is a huge asset for patients allowing for assistance from bed to wheelchair transfer or bathing, sitting position assistance in bed and provides valuable aid to the nursing teams on the 2nd and 3rd floor hospital units.

Matt Gareau, General Manager shares, “Tim Hortons is pleased to support the Auxiliary and Foundation in this annual campaign. The volunteers of the Cran-

brook Health Care Auxiliary work extra hard to get these cookies sold and with help from case sales by EKFH it’s a win win situation for our hospital.”

This year’s cookie purchasers include 12 dozen for an upcoming wedding party, gifts to local charities the Cranbrook Society for Community Living and Street Angels, thank you to staff for doing a good job and from individuals who just can’t resist the great taste of a yummy cookie.

No matter what the reason, thanks to the generosity of the Gareau family and Tim Hortons $1 makes a difference in our community.

Mussels continue to be a danger to area lakes

by Marty Hafke, EKIPC Coordinator Marty Hafke, program coordinator for the East Kootenay Invasive Plant Council, recently met with MLA Bill Bennett to discuss what may be the largest environmental threat to BC. Invasive mussels such as the Zebra and Quagga mussel were first introduced to the Great Lakes in the mid 1980s and have since spread across the United States primarily by watercraft moving from one water body to another, in

some cases over thousands of kilometers. To our knowledge they are not yet present in Canada from Manitoba West.

The Northwestern US is another holdout with no known mussel infestations in OR, WA, ID, MT and WY. Many US States such as Idaho have implemented strict regulations requiring Boats to stop at inspection stations to ensure they are not harboring live mussels which can live for up to 30 days out of water. In Idaho alone this year they have in-

tercepted 56 mussel fouled boats, 6 of which were bound for BC and 3 of which were headed for Alberta. 16 of those fouled boats intercepted in Idaho this year were travelling from the Great Lakes. “If an infested boat can travel from the Great Lakes to Idaho then one can assume that a boat could make that same trip through Canada,” says Hafke. Yet BC has no requirement for boats to be inspected (neither does Alberta nor Saskatchewan). Trends in Idaho, Montana and

other states are showing an increased number of infested boats being found at inspection stations. “I have been a strong advocate for the fight against invasive plant species. This new challenge is easily as serious,” says MLA Bennett.

“This is a classic case of an ounce of prevention being worth a pound of cure,” says Hafke. Or more likely a ton of cure when you look at the costs these tiny mussels can incur.

The US Fish and Wildlife Service estimates impacts to be greater than $120 billion. If the Columbia River Basin were infested, the costs in the US are estimated at over $25 million.

And that’s not a one time cost – that’s per year, every year.

With much appreciated funding from the Columbia Basin Trust, the East Kootenay Invasive Plant Council has already taken the preventative measure of purchasing a mobile boat decontamination unit that is capable of decontaminating a mussel fouled boat, the first of its kind in Western Canada. “This unit does nothing if we can’t find the infested boats coming into our region in the first place,” says Hafke. “This is where we need the provincial

government to rapidly step up and introduce regulations to require boats to be inspected as they are in the US. We don’t have time to spare, this needs to be in place for 2013. We know from past efforts

New business donates to A Clear View campaign

Donna Grainger, EKFH Executive Director received a gift of $500 from Kurt Swanson & the Victoria Ave Car & Pet Wash It was more than cars and trucks that received a clear view from their windshield when local Cranbrook resident Kurt Swanson recently held a grand opening for his newest business venture the Victoria Car & Pet Wash.

East Kootenay Foundation for Health reports that the digital mammography campaign also received a generous $500 gift that helped bring the major capital campaign to its fundraising goal.

This is the second gift in support of breast cancer patients from the entrepreneur. Kurt and

his two sons last year donated an additional $500 in support of the Drew Jesse & Max Shoot for the Star campaign which was also dedicated to the mammography project.

It may have been a day filled with soapy water for both pets and cars but for East Kootenay Foundation for Health it is a clear view that Kurt believes in health care in the East Kootenay.

One of the most exciting moments in my garden this spring was the day when the first tulip poked its head out of the ground. Flash back five months and you will see my family out in the yard with a crowbar, chiselling holes into the semi-frozen soil, randomly dropping bulbs with numb fingers and then covering them with soil and peat moss, hoping for the best.

Despite this less than ideal way of planting, the great majority of the bulbs made it through the winter and gave us a spectacular show once spring rolled around. We even managed to colour coordinate somehow. This really shows the power of bulbs – they are a cinch to plant, and a bit of work and care taken in the fall is plentifully rewarded in the spring.

Bulbs are ready-to-plant bundles that have the flower already inside them. They set roots in the fall to get themselves through a long winter and ready to grow in the spring, with the flower ready to blossom. Put into the ground with a bit of care, bulbs will provide you with a beautiful, lush and lowmaintenance springtime garden. Well-planted bulbs will also come back again and again, spreading, multiplying and getting more vibrant year after year.

One of the first bulbs to send its tiny green sprouts out of the ground is the snowdrop.

These bright-white bells are a must-have in any garden and they are a deer-resistant plant, assuring you will get to enjoy their display, rather than growing a fresh springtime snack for hungry does.

Narcissus, their common name is daffodils, are another human spring bulb favourite that is not a big hit with four-legged garden visitors.

The gold narcissus, the National flower of Wales, is a classic in many gardens, but there are many other varieties. New this year is the narcissus ‘Vanilla Peach’. This is an amazing butterfly narcissus with soft yellow petals framing a coral-pink ruffled split cup.

The most recognized springtime bloomer is most likely the tulip. Each year, dozens of new varieties are named in the several categories of tulips. One of the new varieties this year, the tulip ‘Moulin Rouge’, is a real transformation artist. White petals gradually turn candy apple red as they mature, creating an ever-changing coloured garden.

‘Lasting Love’ is the name of a new lily flowering tulip and you are sure to fall for this beauty. The deep red petals with lighter edges open up wide on sunny days and look like a six-pointed star. Their graceful stems are deceivingly strong and their pointed flower tips make them a real eye catcher. Versatile and elegant they are sure to steal your heart.

Another showstopper in the spring garden is the allium, a towering globe of hundreds of tiny, intense violet blossoms. This flower looks great in a flower arrangement or even dried. Allium are also referred to as ornamental garlic and are part of the onion family, making them deer-resistant.

In Loving Memory Of: Mel Shogren 1935 - 2012 On September 17th, 2012 a hero, Mel Shogren, died. He was a man that very few in Canada would know. He was a husband and father of two boys. Some would say why this would make him a hero; that being a father and husband is something that can be attributed to thousands of men.

However, I would beg to differ. Not every man is willing to spend his time ensuring and instilling in his sons the values and principles that have made them who they are today. That showing us that loving one woman can be so profoundly satisfying.

That you cannot imagine how his life partner will live on without him. It is today that I celebrate the life of this hero, the only one I have ever known.

MILBURN: William Morris Laurie On Wednesday, September 12, 2012 Bill passed away peacefully with his family by his side at the Elk Valley Hospital in Fernie, BC after a long decline in health due to dementia.

Bill was born on July 5, 1929 in Coal Creek, BC. Bill never lost his love for Coal Creek and mining. He enjoyed hockey, fishing, hunting and walking the trails of Fernie with his many dog pals. He loved spending time with family and friends.

Bill is survived by Doreen his wife of 62 years, his children: Maxine Fairclough (Frank), Barbara Olson (Dale), Billy Milburn (Carol), and Lawrence Milburn (Bonnie), 8 grandchildren: Christina, Kimberley, Brent, Kyle, Chelsea, Evan, Connie, Chris, 10 great grandchildren, his sister Esther Elgin (Dave) and sister-in-law Bertha Krause as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Margaret and Joseph Parker and his brother Walter Parker.

A celebration of life will be held in the spring of 2013. In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation in his honor can be made to the charity of your choice.

Our family would like to thank all the nurses and care workers that compassionately cared for Bill at Rocky Mountain Village and the Elk Valley hospital as well as the many friends who supported our family and continue to do so, we express our heartfelt thanks.

I will remember my brother Mel, not as he was in the past months, but as he was several years ago: as a sharp, witty, wellinformed guy; as a brother who enjoyed good food, good drink, good people and good conversation; as a military man, disciplined, direct, and proud to be a Canadian; and as a man also proud of his Swedish heritage - even though I never was able to teach him to speak much Swedish!

Mel took great joy in knowing that people were thinking of him, and he would be overjoyed to know that so many of you are remembering him today!

Mel was a caring, generous father, grandfather and a loving husband to his wife Judy. On their 50th wedding anniversary, Mel told me he couldn’t believe how lucky he had been to be with Judy for all those years....and lucky he was indeed, for it was Judy who was always there for him, and who brought him so much happiness, comfort and joy until his last days with us.

Goodbye, brother, you will always be in my thoughts.

Margaret Elizabeth Baker June 12, 1914 - September 17, 2012 It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of a living angel, Margaret. Born and raised in Cranbrook, British Columbia, she always had a lot of stories to tell from the past as Cranbrook expanded. One of her favourite stories was the elephant "Baby Ed" whom she saw running down the road from her window. She spent most of her younger years raising children, which was one of her greatest memories. She loved to bake many things, and one of her best creations was her "lemon loaf". She also enjoyed ironing and washing clothes as one of her many hobbies. One of her favourite shadows was "Brodie Harris" whom she always called her dollie. The two of them shared a special bond together. Her other favourite shadow was her daughter Gloria Harris whom she spent the past 10 years with and was in her home at the time of her passing.

Margaret is survived by her daughters Marlene (Brue Sauder), Gloria Harris, son Lionel (Monica) Baker, Terry (Judy) Baker and she will be sadly missed by many grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Ronald Baker, son Baby Ronnie, Abby, Wayne, daughter Liz Chiz and son-in-law Mervin Harris.

A Celebration Of Margaret's Life will be held on Saturday, September 22, 2012 at 512 - 30th Avenue South at 1:00 pm. A private family Interment will take place in Westlawn Cemetery. Those wishing to make a memorial donation in honour of Margaret may do so to the: Canadian Cancer Society, 19 - 9th Avenue South, Cranbrook, British Columbia, V1C 2L9.

OBITUARY Melvin Arthur Shogren 1935 - 2012 Melvin Arthur Shogren passed away peacefully at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital In Cranbrook, British Columbia on Monday, September 17, 2012 at 77 years of age.

Mel was born in Cranbrook on August 10, 1935. He went to school in Waldo and Jaffray until he joined the RCAF in 1954 as a young man 18 years old. He served on many different bases in Canada and Europe.

In 1960, Mel married Judy Foster of North Bay, Ontario.

In 1990 Mel retired from the Air Force after almost 37 years of service and returned home to the East Kootenay's.

Mel and Judy settled into retirement and enjoyed many happy times with family and friends. Mel fought a long and difficult battle with Cancer and Alzheimer's, but through it all enjoyed the wonderful companionship of family and friends.

Mel is survived by his loving wife Judy, his two sons Kevin (Tina) and Derek (Lynn) and his sister-in-law, Patricia Anderson. He leaves behind three granddaughters: Courtenay, Chelsea and Brooke. He leaves many wonderful memories with his sister Carol Ann (Bill) and his brother Harvey (Shirley) as well as his many relatives in the Jaffray area.

Mel was predeceased by his father Adolph, his mother Mary, and his sister Arlene.

Our family gratefully thanks the doctors and nurses and caregivers who gave Mel comfort and respect for many years.

At Mel's request, a memorial service will not be held. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in his honour can be made to the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #24, 803 Cranbrook Street North, Cranbrook, British Columbia, V1C 3S2.
