The power to change light - it’s so easy Choosing from so many beautiful window fashions should be a pleasure, not a confusing chore. Start by reviewing these important considerations. Light Source Where the light is coming from is important. First make sure you know which direction your window faces. North light tends to be cold and clear, suggesting energy-efficient window treatments. Light from the south is warm and strong yearround, so you might choose light-diffusing window coverings to protect your furniture. If your windows face east, bright, warm morning light calls for window coverings that block UV rays. And if light comes from the west, hot, bright afternoons demand solutions that are both light controlling and light diffusing. Privacy

Do you need full privacy from next-door neighbors or just a little screening from, say, the garage or a central air conditioning unit? Style Do you prefer a traditional or contemporary look? Relaxed or formal? Country warmth or urban sophistication? Colour Whatever colour or

shade, tint or texture you want, you’ll find it among the endless choices available. Window Shapes Does anyone have ordinary windows any more? Not to worry. From arches to angles, from circular windows to Palladians, there are window coverings that will complement any window. Always Within Reach

No matter where your windows are located, you need to reach them easily and safely. Energy Efficiency Fuel bills soaring? There are energy efficient window fashions so you can save on fuel bills while doing your

bit for the environment. UV Protection Built-in ultraviolet protection gives you the power to block the harmful rays that fade carpets, discolor upholstery and degrade your finest possessions.

Safety Kids or pets, and loose cords can spell trouble. Operating systems and special features can be designed to make your home as safe as it is beautiful. Submitted by E.L. Fabricating

IT ALL BEGINS WITH THE S. TRANSFORM HARSH SUNLIGHT Vanes and sheers combine to softly filter light. GAIN UV PROTECTION Up to 88% ultraviolet protection with vanes open, 99% when closed. ENHANCE NATURAL DAYLIGHTING Sheers disperse sunlight deep into the room, reducing the need for electric lights. PRESERVE OUTSIDE VIEWS No cords or tapes to obstruct outside views. Dress your window with a beaded curtain Beaded curtains, which were all the rage during the 1970s, have recently caught the eye of trendsetters in interior decoration. They are a highly prized accessory for doors or even windows these days, due primarily to the magical look they create. Great in a living room or a child’s bedroom, they sparkle in the light and give an air of lightness to your home. The beads used in the manufacture of beaded curtains can be made of many different materials, including bamboo, acrylic, glass, and crystal. There are hundreds of designs and colour combinations available. Your choices are endless for creating a totally unique curtain. Start by measuring your door or window in order to calculate the exact

number of bead strings you’ll need. Then measure the height from the curtain rod to the ground and, using some sharp pliers, cut pieces of small-gauge metal wire to the desired lengths. String the beads, following a predetermined order or at random, and finish each row with a crimp bead. To fix the strings of beads onto the curtain rod, mark the position of each string on the rod then drill holes with a bit and knot the end through the hole. Hammer two long nails decorated with several beads of different shapes into each end of the rod and affix above a doorway or window. Another idea for using beads is to sew some onto the hem of a light, transparent fabric curtain.

Use different materials, colours, and shapes to create an original look in a doorway or window.

Redesigning your space by shopping in your own home With spring just around the corner, when doing your spring cleaning why not redesign your space? Redesign is the art of transforming a home by editing, rearranging, and utilizing the things you have collected over the years, without necessarily having to buy new. Sometimes it’s as simple as changing the paint color. You can create a space that is balanced and harmonious while reflecting your personal taste without having to spend a lot of money. Look at your space through the eyes of a new guest in your home. Does your home reflect you and your personal sense of style? With today’s busy world your home should be a space that is warm, welcoming, and relaxing. Here are some things you can do to create that space you’ve always wanted: De-clutter. Pick a closet, or a room, and keep it simple. A project at a time so you don’t become overwhelmed. Try using this rule when de-cluttering, if you haven’t used it in a year,

Simply de-cluttering your space can go a long way

sell it, donate or throw it away. Use decorative boxes or baskets to hold unattractive items like magazines, papers and gaming devices. Place these on shelves in a de-cluttered bookcase. Change the paint color in a room. It takes an afternoon and is an affordable way to change the look, feel and atmosphere. Pick a color you like and can live with for awhile, try the browns, greys. Purples, the “new neutral”. Want to be bold with color? Do it with your accessories, i.e.: area rug, throw pillows and drapes, that way

it is easy to change when you grow tired of the look. Remember a cohesive room has 3 colors. For example, pick a dark brown for your wall color, contrast it with white or black trim color and use another color as your accent. Like a natural, soothing space? Choose colors similar to those seen in nature as an accent. Like something more contemporary? Try a turquoise blue, citrus green or purple. Rearrange your furniture. Pull it away from the walls and try angling for a different look.

Bring that dresser you’ve had forever out of the guest room, paint it, change the hardware and use in your living room or dining room. Think about repurposing things you have around the house in a different way. Everyone seems to have one of those 2 drawer metal filing cabinets, they look great when spray painted a bright color and used in a kids room as a night stand. The spray paint comes in a variety of colors available at any home improvement store and will cost you less than $10.

Put visually lighter items at the top, if you have color items ensure they are displayed evenly throughout the display. Mix up the books with some attractive pottery or other unexpected items on your bookcase and place the items in a zig zag pattern from shelf to shelf. Put 2-3 larger books on their sides, center on a shelf and put one of your cherished treasures on top. Remember you don’t have to display all of your items at once, put some away and exchange with the seasons and you will enjoy them more as it will refresh your space while leaving it looking less cluttered. Remember the art of redesign is shopping your own home. Look at the items you already own and ask yourself how you could use them in another room or in a unique and creative way. FALL 2012

Choosing a theme for a child’s bedroom Whether it’s for a baby or a big kid, choosing a theme for a child’s bedroom is not always easy. Some popular themes, such as trendy film characters, are short-lived while others become classics. For a little girl’s bedroom you can’t go wrong with flowers, fairies, princesses, birds, butterflies, hearts, and romantic roses, while classic boy themes include sports, cars, planes, outer space, knights, pirates, robots, and camouflage. Neutral themes are also a possibility, such as Mother Nature, animals, especially cats and dogs, or a jungle with big, funny elephants and majestic giraffes. The age of the child should always be taken into consideration when choosing a theme. For example, gentle, classic bear and rabbit themes with light colours are popu-

lar with very young girls and boys, but they won’t likely suit the tastes of older children. A newborn’s bedroom can be decorated with celestial themes: stars, birds, angels

and clouds, which are airy and soothing for babies and tired parents. For older children, geographical themes based on a particular country or continent, such as Mexico

or Asia, or topical themes, such as the environment or ecology, are also interesting options. Whichever theme you choose, make sure that it can be easily changed. For

paper will be more difficult to replace when your child’s tastes evolve. No matter the style and theme, try to avoid cluttering the room and mixing styles.

FALL 2012

So… you want a new kitchen… You’ve searched through the magazines, cut out pages, checked out the on-line sites; now it’s time to bring that dream kitchen into reality! So, where do you start? Before you even go check out the cabinet shops, you have some serious soul searching ane lifestyle analysis to do. Make a list of the things that you like and dislike about your current kitchen, then make a “wish list” of the items that you hope to incorporate into your new kitchen (and be realistic – how big is the kitchen space that you have to work with?). Think about the way that you will be using your kitchen and how much do you entertain – and most importantly, what is your budget? Then, the fun begins! First stop… Appliances. You don’t want to leave them to the last and then not have the space for the equip-

ment that you want. For the kitchen designer to plan out your kitchen layout properly, they need to know what appliances you want put into the kitchen. Keep your lifestyle checklist in mind while you are shopping for your appliances, it will help you decide between the things that you want and the things that you really need. A professional range may be calling your name, but the lengthy cleanup of some will soon tarnish that vision. The electric Ceran stove tops are the easiest to clean, but expensive to replace if they break. When deciding between a gas versus electric stove (or cooktop), remember to factor in the cost for a gasfitter too (if your home isn’t already set up for a gas stove). When purchasing a dishwasher, it is worth spending the extra money for the stainless in-

terior – it is much quieter! And, buy the bigger fridge now… you’ll regret it later if you don’t! As for sinks, there are several materials to choose from. With stainless sinks, you should know the gauge (24 is thin, 18 is thick) and the grade (18:10 is good, 18:8 is excellent). Look for coatings and rubber pads on the outside; these keep the sink quieter when the water is running and stops it from “sweating”. It is also important to get a good set of taps; they will last longer and operate smoother than the basic ones. Next stop… Think about what you are going to do for your flooring (tile / hardwood / or lino?). You should pick your flooring first, so you can take a sample with you when it’s time to pick your countertop colour. Finally… It is time to go into your local cabinet shop,

$3,000

SAVE UP TO WITH AVAILABLE REBATES & GOVERNMENT GRANTS on qualifying home comfort systems

armed with all of the information that you have collected (magazine clippings, appliance choices, wish list, etc), and your room measurements with window and stove placement. It is also a great idea to take some digital pictures to show them – it is true, a picture is worth a thousand words! The kitchen designer will ask you to choose a cabinet door style, and what you would like for your countertops (laminate, solid surface, or granite). Most people will choose laminate, as it is the most reasonably priced material, and there are so many beautiful colour choices and patterns to choose from. Granite (stone) and Solid Surface products (such as Silestone) will cost you about 10 times the cost of laminate. They are lovely choices, but they will basically double the cost of your kitchen – and you won’t

want to replace them 5-10 years from now when you get tired of the pattern or colour! With all of this information at his/her fingertips, the kitchen designer can now work on a kitchen plan layout that will be right for you; and they can work out an estimate (based on your measurements). Most cabinet shops will do this type of estimate for no charge. However, if you want someone to come out to your home to do a custom plan, or you wish to have them spend more time making custom changes to your “free estimate” do not be surprised if a token deposit is requested from you. Remember, they are the experts with years of experience, and this deposit fee is usually deducted from the price of your kitchen, when you purchase it from them. Like you, their time is valu-

able, and they shouldn’t be expected to work for free either. A new kitchen is a large purchase, so you will want to make sure that you take the time to do it properly! Unless you are a great handyman, you will probably want to have it professionally installed. Remember, it will take the professionals less time to do the install – so you will have your kitchen up and running much faster than if you do it yourself! Planning a new kitchen is a lot of work, but it is worth it! You will enjoy it for many years to come… Can’t afford a whole NEW Kitchen..... How about new countertops, or handles or doors? A few inexpensive changes can make your kitchen look more modern at a fraction of the cost of a new kitchen. Submitted by Allcraft Kitchens En’Counters

The eco-bedroom 100% pure wool provides optimum in sleeping health. Wool is the only material that can absorb up to 1/3 of it’s weight in moisture without feeling damp and efficiently wicks away the one litre of moisture vapour our bodies lose each night. The quality of your life is directly affected by the quality of your sleep. The simple choice of adding quality wood bedding to your sleeping environment will increase the quality of your sleep by over 50%. Our metabolism slows during sleep but continues to produce heat and moisture vapour. In order to maintain natural body temperature and a restful state this heat and moisture vapour must be dissipated or thermal stress will result. Our sleep patterns are broken and we wake up restless and uncomfortable.

This simple choice of a wood duvet, wool mattress pad, washable sheep skins, or even a wool pillow will greatly improve sleep quality. Only wool creates a micro climate which assists in regulating body temperature and humidity - because of it’s natural breathabilty and moisture control. Wool has it all: super insulation - resilience - moisture absorption - natural flame resistance - therapeutic benefits. Wool, the fabric of history, is often called the miracle fibre. It does not release harmful toxic chemicals or gases, because of moisture control. The scales that cover each wool fibre help further create an inhospitable environment for dust mites. Varying thickness of each wool fibre creates a fluffy resilient product, duvet, pillow or mattress pad. A good duvet should:

•provide good insulation. •be lightweight, comfortable and contouring. •readily absorb the moisture vapour given off by the body while asleep. •be non-allergenic and free of petro chemical products. Of the four remaining natural materials, down, wool, silk and bamboo, wool is the only one that meets all these criterion. The ideal pillow should: •Support the head and neck in correct alignment for the position the sleeper is in. •Prevent moisture build up and dampness in the neck area. •Be free of petro chemical products and be non allergenic. Wool knops in pillows, are tightly twisted little balls of wool that are incredibly resilient and easily retain their loft and shape.

Decorating a stairwell

Even though decorating a stairwell can be problematic because of its central position in a home, it really does deserve all your attention. Indeed, if there’s one part of the house where you should be more daring, this is it! In order to harmonize colours and style, the first thing you should take into consideration is the décor of the rooms that are accessed from the staircase. Secondly, stairs leading from one floor to another can tend to feel cramped, and the higher the wall the more your choice of colour will affect the final look. Light, neutral colours will help the space appear more open, while darker tones will make a staircase seem more enclosed. Applying a single colour to the walls will create a marked contrast with the colour of the staircase and emphasize the height of the walls.

Another option is to apply a band of a different colour to divide the wall several feet from the ground, running parallel to the angle of

the stairs. This will draw attention away from the height of the wall. The effect can be accentu-

ated by replacing a traditional balustrade with stainless steel cables to create more transparency. The walls of a stairwell are perfect for displaying family photographs or paintings arranged in a staggered

vertical pattern following the contour of the stairs. Ensure that the frames are visually pleasing when grouped together and add one or two wall lamps to illuminate them. In this way, each stair can

become a place to stop and admire a picture. A carpet can also give new life to a worn staircase, and if the stairs are wide enough, decorative objects placed here and there can create points of interest.

Black: fall home improvement project Black has always been a timeless symbol of classicism, modernity, and luxury in homes and fashion. For the 2012-2013 season, back-to-school trends are seeing black appear once again at the top of the colour chart. Black in interior design is now being transformed into a total look, both as a background tone against which coloured objects stand out and vice-versa. Latest trends offer us three choices in colour combinations: used with blue to produce a Thousand and One Nights atmosphere, with grey for an industrial design look, or with gold to recreate the Baroque style. Although a dramatic effect can be created by marrying black with gold, be careful not to overload the room with glitzy objects.

There are many different blacks available this season: jet black, smoky black, licorice black, and raven black, which contains a hint of blue.

Overstatement can also be circumvented by choosing natural materials, which are a sure bet for avoiding tackiness. Synthetic materials, lacquered blacks, or any kind of shiny surface should not be included in this type of décor. Velvet drapes and cushions should also be avoided. Choose instead linen or leather for cushions, while natural wood furniture will help you create an understated and elegant décor. Think twice before painting a ceiling black, as this will make the room look smaller and sinister. Remember that an all-black décor absorbs light and does not reflect it. Do feel free to experiment with a positive-negative effect by playing with lighting and accessories.

An eye-catching blaze Because a fireplace is the centrepiece of any room, decorative objects to be displayed around it must be chosen very carefully. Whether the mantel and surround of your fireplace are wide or narrow, decorative or not, there is one main principle to respect when highlighting this inviting feature: your personality. Start with your favourite work of art, placing it in the centre of the mantel to create a focal point. This could be a statue, a candelabrum, an antique bowl, or a flower arrangement. Then group similar objects here and there around this central piece, extending out to the ends of the mantel. “Similar” objects means choosing ones of the same style and colour. So surround your favou-

rite object with vases in similar colours or photograph frames in the same style in order to create a balanced effect. With balance still in mind, mix small objects with larger ones and resist the temptation to overcrowd. The individual interest of each item would disappear and the result would look disorganized. If you really don’t like the look of your fireplace, it is possible to improve its appearance. For example, you could paint the mantel and surround it with imitation marble or dress it up with little mirrors in such a way as to give the room more sparkle and light. You could also look for an antique mantelpiece and just install the lintel, on which you could attach a glass shelf for a perfect blend of styles and eras.

Things to know about your septic system If you are like most people, you know very little about your septic system. This is understandable. In urban and suburban areas there are sewers to carry household waste to municipal wastewater treatment facilities. In more rural areas, however, septic tank systems provide the functions of both sewers and treatment facilities. All household waste is disposed of through the septic system. The proper operation of the septic system is essential to public and private health, to property values, and to the environment. To see if you know enough about your septic system, answer the following questions. If you cannot answer all the questions, your septic system could become a huge aggravation, public nuisance, health hazard and/ or a financial burden. • Do you know what a septic tank is and how it works? • Do you know what kind

of soil absorption area you have? • Do you know what it costs to replace a failed septic system? • Do you know how to keep a septic system from failing? • Do you know that failed and failing septic systems contribute to pollution? “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” was never more true than it is with septic tank care. A small commitment to the care of your septic system will protect you indefinitely from the nightmare created by a failing system. The quantity and composition of waste generated in the home varies according to the number of residents, their personal water usage, and the water-utilizing appliances in the home. The septic tank system is a small, on-site sewage treatment and disposal system buried in the ground. The septic system has two

essential parts: (1) the septic tank and (2) the soil absorption area. The septic tank is a watertight box usually made of precast concrete, concrete blocks, or reinforced fiberglass. When household waste enters the septic tank several things occur: (1) organic solid material floats to the surface and forms a layer of what is commonly called “scum.” Bacteria in the septic tank biologically convert this material to liquid. (2) Inorganic or inert solid materials and the by-products of bacterial digestion sink to the bottom of the tank and form a layer commonly known as “sludge”. (3) Only clear water should exist between the scum and sludge layers. It is this clear water - and only this clear water - that should overflow into the soil absorption area. Solid material overflowing into the soil absorption area should be avoided at all

costs. It is this solid overflow that clogs soil pores and causes systems to fail. Two main factors cause solid material to build up enough to overflow: (1) bacterial deficiency, and (2) lack of sludge removal. Bacteria must be present in the septic tank to break down and digest the organic solids. Normal household waste provides enough bacteria to digest the solids unless any harm is done to the bacteria. Bacteria are very sensitive to environmental changes. Check the labels of products you normally use in the home. Products carrying harsh warnings such as “harmful or fatal if swallowed” will harm bacteria. A septic tank system will serve a home satisfactorily only if it is properly designed, installed, and adequately maintained. Even a good system which does not have proper care and attention may become a nuisance, and burdensome

expense. Septic system maintenance means two simple things. First, sludge that accumulates in the bottom of the tank must be pumped out periodically. How frequently depends on the size of the tank, the use it gets, and the condition of the system. There is no additive that you can put in the tank that will deal with the sludge. It must be pumped out. If not pumped out, the sludge will eventually overflow into the soil absorption area. This will clog the system, and it will need to be replaced, at enormous expense and inconvenience. The second part of septic system maintenance involves the bacteria necessary for solids digestion. If bacteria-killing products are used in the home - as they usually are - the bacteria should be replenished. If the bacteria level is too low, the solids may not be digested properly.

Then solids can build up too much and overflow into the soil absorption area. This again can clog the system, requiring major repair or replacement. Your septic tank could be overflowing solid material right now, and you won’t know it until it blocks the soil absorption system so badly that no more drainage is possible. This blockage takes varying lengths of time. But this is fact: a neglected system will get blocked; it will overflow, it will have an obnoxious odor; it will contaminate and pollute. It may also require repair or even replacement. The first septic system “emergency” - a backup or overflow - often marks the beginning of a failing trend. Replacement costs vary, but they can be very, very expensive - especially if contaminated material needs to be removed. Submitted by Triple P Sanitation
