St. Joe’s shows its appreciation Renee Andor Black Press COMOX — Showing appreciation for the work its employees and volunteers do is something that’s important to St. Joseph’s General Hospital. “I think people appreciate being appreciated,” said Steve Hill, the hospital’s director of pastoral care, mission and medical ethics, and organizer of the hospital’s staff appreciation events. “And where there’s appreciation there’s kind of a sense of energy, and a sense of hope and a sense of we’re all in it together.” The latest appreciation day, dubbed Gelato Day and held Thursday, featured live music from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the hospital cafeteria — as well as free gelato. Ten local musical acts donated an hour each of their time to spice up the atmosphere in the cafeteria including: Tracy Canil, Divertimento Baroque Ensemble, Tammy Fassaert, Helen Austin, View’s Chime Bell Choir, Indigo Jazz, Dick Stuart, David Somers, Roger Helfrick, and Jenn Forsland and Luke Blu Guthrie. The free gelato was made possible thanks to a donation from Piercy’s – Mt. Washington Funeral Home. “We had the staff
serving the staff the gelato, and lots of banter, lots of fun, you know, chatter back and forth — it’s community building,” added Hill, who also organizes other similar days throughout the year. The next one will be during the hospital’s week of pastoral care at the end of October, and musicians and free goodies will be on hand each day for the week. Dale Graham, singer with Indigo Jazz and a physiotherapist at the hospital, said she often hears her co-workers talking about what a fantastic idea the appreciation days are, and she was pleased to donate her time as a musician on Gelato Day. “I love to sing and I like to share it with people, and I have a lot of investment in the colleagues that I work with here,” said Graham “So I’m pleased to give myself the chance to perform, and really pleased to support Steve’s efforts to bring some kind of — just lightening of the day of the people here who work so hard.” Hill noted the idea first came up about two-and-ahalf years ago when a housekeeping staff member approached him with the suggestion not too long after he started working at the hospital. And as far as he knows, there weren’t staff appreciation days before he came. “As people tell me,

Fishing Corner with Don Daniels email: dond@campbellrivermirror.com On Wednesday ay September 12th I made a visit to popular fishing areas in Campbell River which included Discovery Pier, Pink Salmon Tyee Club and Painters Lodge. This time of year the fishing action slows down and the locals are getting ready for the chum and Coho. The pinks are coming to an end on the Campbell River but on any given day the anglers are fishing between the 2 bridges. I have caught many pinks on the fly using a weighted green or pink fly, producing pinks at the old Alder pool. Mel Adams caught the first spring at Discovery Pier on April 20th. To date 21 fish have been caught and reported. Hudson Johnson caught his Tyee on August 27th that came in at 42.5 ppounds and so far is the biggest. Steve Meszaros got a 34 pounder September 110th.The Tyee club has reported 31 fish ccaught this year and tto date Owen Lagos hhas the biggest Tyee ccoming in at 43 pounds. The season Last Days at the Tyee Pool came to an end on Saturday September 15th. Fishing has been steady at Deep Water Bay and the Hump, but many anglers are coming up empty handed. Few hatchery Coho are being caught and the chums are just around the corner. Checking the charts at Painters Lodge the fish are averaging 7 to 24 pounds spring. Come out for the free fun fishing Derby at Roberts Lake and enjoy lemonade, hot dogs and chili served up by Lorna Duncan. There are lots of prizes to be won and draws to be made. Roberts Lake is located on the highway halfway between Campbell River and Sayward. “Caring about all of you who built our community!” Compliments of:

Household items to dissect Q. Nothing impresses a kid like brandishing a knife and saying, “Let’s cut that open and see what’s inside,” declared “Wired” magazine. Try to cite three household objects that are fun and safe to dissect? A. 1. A baseball. Using a vice and a hacksaw, cut it in half to reveal a core of cork (formerly of rubber), says the magazine’s Judy Dutton. “This made the ball more bouncy, ushering in the ‘live ball era’ that allowed Babe Ruth to become a legend.” To avert a surfeit of home runs, the outer layers consist of deadening yarn. 2. A light stick. Opening one is safe if you cut it with scissors near the end and pour the liquid into a glass jar. Remove the inner glass vial and put that in another container. When combined chemically, the two fluids (typically hydrogen peroxide and phenyl oxalate ester) give off energy in the form of light called chemiluminescence. 3. An unhooked speaker. With a utility knife, slice around the cone as you explain to your kids how electricity is turned
into sound: When the audio signal goes through the wire coil, the coil turns into an electromagnet that subtly moves the paper cone, pushing air molecules in and out of the speaker and reproducing the strains of your favorite musicmaker. ●●●● Q. Do dogs feel love and other human emotions? A. Dogs have the same brain structures, hormones and chemical changes that produce our emotional states, answers University of British Columbia behaviorist Stanley Coren in “Discover” magazine. They even have the hormone oxytocin, which is involved with love and affection, so likely they also have emotions. “However, it is important not to go overboard: The mind of a dog is roughly equivalent to that of a 2 to 2 1/2-year-old child, who clearly has emotions but not all possible ones on the path to adulthood.” By four to six months, dogs attain their full emotional range: joy, fear, anger, disgust, excitement, contentment, distress and even love.

Bill and Rich Sones Strange But True
“A dog does not have, and will never develop, more complex emotions, like guilt, pride, contempt and shame, however.” The feeling of guilt that many owners sense, as when their pet soils the rug, isreally basic fear of punishment, a very correct and appropriate thing to be feeling at the time. ●●●● Q. A puzzle for you from the popular British magazine “The Ladies Diary” of 1704-1841 for promoting math among the middle class: If at h-feet tall, you somehow managed to walk all the way around the Earth on a solid circumference, would your head or your feet travel farther? By how much? A. Your head, by 2 times pi times your height h, answers Frank J. Swetz in “Mathematical Expedition: Exploring Word Problems Across the Ages.” Think of it this way: When considering distance around a circle, you’re dealing with a circumference whose formula is pi times the diameter (d). So your feet would travel a global circuit equalling pi times the diameter
of the Earth, or pi times d. But your head is h extra feet farther from the center of the Earth, so the circle your head follows has h extra feet at each end of its diameter. This makes it 2h longer than d with a circumference of pi times d + 2h, or exactly 2 times pi times h more than the distance traveled by your feet. Therefore, assuming you’re 6 feet tall, 2 times pi times 6 feet is really 2 x 3.14 x 6, or nearly 38 feet farther traveled by your head than by your feet! ●●●● Q. Which creatures probably hate getting caught in the rain more than you do? A. Rain poses a challenge for any fliers, with water drops often hitting them hard, reducing visibility and adding water weight that makes staying aloft more energyconsuming, says the “Ask Us” page of “ScienceIllustrated. Com” magazine. “Not surprisingly, most flying insects seek cover when the rain comes.” Luckily, when it rains lightly, many are able to navigate between the drops, especially certain quick-moving mosquito species that manage to “dance” through the air. Small slow movers, however, are often knocked down. While bigger insects
generally fare better, “in heavy rains almost all insects that have not sought shelter are knocked to the ground, where they either die or take flight again once they dry off.” ●●●● Q. In the category of “technology run amok,” consider perhaps the article titled “The droneliness of the long-distance runner.” What’s that all about? A. The research duo of Floyd Mueller and Eberhard Grather at Australia’s Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology envision a “joggobot,” or small robot companion to joggers in the form of a quad-rotor helicopter drone, says Paul Marks in “New Scientist” magazine. Programmed to react to a bright blue and orange pattern painted on a runner’s T-shirt, the craft hovers ahead about a meter off the ground at just the right pace and distance to help encourage a steady gait. “Should the robot be more like a coach or more like a pet?” Mueller wonders. “One might make the exercise more effective, but the other might make it more fun. Which one is better? And is there a ‘better’?”

ALERT BAY— The U’mista Cultural Society will benefit from a cash windfall from the Department of Canadian Heritage’s Museums Assistance Program. The nearly $50,000 of funding will be used in Alert Bay’s U’mista Cultural Centre to purchase specialized museum storage and shelving units and to complete a reorganization of the Centre’s historic Potlatch Collection. A release from MP John Duncan’s office said that the project will improve the preservation of a unique and important part of the Kwakwaka’wakw people’s cultural traditions and provide greater public access to First Nations language, culture, and heritage. “It is our fundamental priority to preserve U’mista’s historic, worldrenowned Potlatch Collection, which is a powerful catalyst for cultural learning and major source of pride in this community,” said Sarah Holland, Executive Director, U’Mista Cultural Centre. “We are very grateful for the crucial support from the Government
of Canada, which will allow us to improve the care of our collection, ensuring that our Potlatch Collection will be able tell the powerful stories of the Kwakwaka’wakw for generations to come.” Duncan is quoted as saying, “This project will enhance the opportunity for Canadians to learn about the history and cultural traditions of this area and its people. Our government is committed to the preservation of the Kwakwaka’wakw culture and continues to support Aboriginal organizations in their efforts to preserve and protect historically significant artifacts.” In 2011 and 2012 the centre was engaged in exhange projects in Europe. Last summer several artifacts were sent to a German museum while U’Mista hosted an exhibit of centuries-old items from the Saxon Sovereign Court. Earlier this year, the Museum Volkenkunde in the Netherlands consigned local

Helps virtually everybody quickly. The only prostate remedy that works so well that it comes with a money-back guarantee. Literally hundreds of delighted men testifying on our web site: Doctor said to keep on drinking the tea. Prescribed prostate drugs did not help. Leonard Pearcey, Wassis, NB I cancelled my prostate surgery. Get up once a night. I'm so happy not to have to face the torment of a prostate operation and incontinence or impotency. Albert E. Blain, 74, Schumacher, ON Even after TURP prostate surgery and microwave therapy had to get up many times. Now down to 1-2 times. Tea is 100% better than drugs. Robert G. Stocker, Eustasis, FL After 1st year drinking tea my PSA went down to 4.5; after 2nd year to 2.9; after 3rd year to 2.3. I highly recommend the tea. A real life saver. Thomas M. Thurston, Forsyth, GA. Women suffering with incontinence, bladder infections, UTIs ask for Bladder Control Tea for Women #4b. Guaranteed relief within days.
SNORING? Allergies SLEEP APNEA? As recommended by Dr. GiffordJones M. D. Often snorers also have sleep apnea which causes being tired all day, high blood pressure, heart attacks, strokes, irregular heartbeats (per FDA website). Millions suffer needlessly and can stop their nightly ordeals.
To my surprise, after taking Bell Snoring & Sleep Apnea Relief #23 I really didn’t snore or gasp for air anymore. I sleep through the night and feel rested and refreshed in the morning. Mark Wilson, 40, Hudson, NH Sleep apnea capsules worked first night! For last 15 years I had sleep apnea and my doctor made me buy a CPAP machine, which I could not use. Finally Bell #23 helped the first night and every night thereafter. Like a miracle. Unbelievable. Karen Braun, 67, Glace Bay, NS For 20 years I was waking up frequently gasping for air. During the day I would start napping every time I would sit down, because I was tired. Since taking Bell #23 sleeping 6 hours is heaven. It made a substantial change in my life. Mary C. Myrick, 62, Jackson, MS It is such a joy not having to use the CPAP machine. I have had sleep apnea for 10 years. Using Bell#23, my wife says there is no more snoring or stoppage of breathing. It is such a joy to be able to roll to left or right with no hose or mask to deal with. Thank you Bell for a great relief. I suggest anyone with these problems to try it. You will be overjoyed with the results. Wayne Burse, 63, Beamsville, ON.
are a modern epidemic I used Bell Allergy Relief #24 for 2 years. I tried numerous other remedies all my life that were not effective. Since I discovered #24 I do not have a stuffy nose and itchy eyes when pollen season comes around. No problem working with hardwoods or O.S.B. sheeting. I don’t have to walk around like a doped zombie anymore. Leonard Waldner, 44, Delia, AB Last 4 years in spring I had allergy attacks with runny nose, sore throat and headaches. Just 2 capsules Bell Allergy Relief #24 brought relief. Belinda Wilfong, 41, Hillsboro, MO For 20 years my life was miserable with sneezing, watery eyes and sinus pressure year-round on most days. I was amazed. On 3rd day all allergies were gone. It was like magic. Becky Gerber, 25, Dover, OH Golfing without allergy attacks I tried all the medications and none worked. After taking 1 capsule in the morning I’m completely free of all symptoms. Richard Gamez, 74, San Antonio, TX God bless you I went from doctor to doctor for years with allergy sinus problems. The medications made me still sicker. After starting Bell Allergy Relief one capsule at night I felt like born again the next morning. Therese Noto, 58, New York, NY. ***All Bell Lifestyles products can be returned for a full refund if you are not satisfied. Bell uses the power of nature to help put life back into your lifestyle
There’s nothing like growing up in Campbell River to prepare a girl for life on the world stage with the famous Cirque du Soleil. That’s how the city’s premiere dance instructor and artistic director Heather Gordon Murphy sees her world as she packs her bags for Azerbaijan in Eastern Europe where she will work with the Cirque team mounting a 400-person “spectacle” at the Sept. 22 opening ceremonies of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) Under 17 Women’s World Cup of Soccer tournament. Murphy, 54, originally a dance instructor, is well known in the city for her work with the Shoreline Music Theatre Society, Sweet Tease Burlesque, River City Players, Raincoast Creative Performing Arts and the Tidemark Youth Theatre. “I look at Campbell River as sort of the wild west,” Murphy says. “Because we’re here we have to adapt. We become so capable here. We tend to create things to happen or we go crazy.” It is that ability to create, to adapt, “to build a stage and create a skit on it”

Heather Gordon Murphy is well known in Campbell River for bringing lively entertainment to the community through various ventures. that appealed to the Cirque, she says. It was also her work with Australia’s David Atkins Enterprises, the company chosen to mount the opening and closing ceremonies at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. “I learned to do everything from operating a fork lift to putting 1,000 people on the floor with snowboards, to standing in for the Four Tenors for sound checks and I worked my butt off.” It was at the 2010 Olympics that Murphy
learned the skill of choreographing mass groups. It involved the complex task of matching the carefully-scripted movements of 1,000 volunteers to ensure they corresponded with every changing bar of music. In Baku, Azerbaijan, Murphy will be part of a fourperson team helping to choreograph 400 local volunteers for a sevenminute segment in the ceremonies. The ceremonies and games will be televised in more than 150 countries.

ANSWER TO PUZZLE NO. 625
The 10 most prescribed drugs in Canada According to the www.canada. com website on May 25, 2012, the 10 most prescribed medications in Canada were: 1. Synthroid (thyroid); 2.Crestor (lowers cholesterol); 3.Apo-Atorvastatin (lowers cholesterol); 4. Asaphen (coated aspirin); 5. ApoFurosemide (water pill to treat high blood pressure); 6. Plavix (blood thinner); 7. Nexium (controls stomach acid, heartburn and difficulty swallowing); 8 Teva-Amoxicillin (common penicillin type antibiotic often used in children for ear infections); 9. Apohydro (water pill used in high blood pressure) and 10. Coversyl (ACE inhibitor for controlling blood pressure). I would like to suggest naturopathic strategies in helping you keep this polypharmacy out of your kitchen cupboards. ● Synthroid: Underactive thyroid is certainly something I encounter every day in my practice. One nutrient that can often help optimize the health of the under active thyroid gland is naturally occurring iodine eaten in the form of seaweed or kelp. When some people eat it daily they notice their body temperature improves and they are less chilly, which is a common symptom. Their energy improves also. There are kelp chips snacks available now as well as nori seaweed wraps that can be put into soups. ● Crestor and Apo-Atorvastatin are the same class of statin drug used to lower LDL cholesterol. It is particularly recommended for those who have had a heart attack but there is much controversy about their efficacy at preventing heart attacks. Nutrients that lower LDL cholesterol
