St. Joe’s shows its appreciation Renee Andor Black Press COMOX — Showing appreciation for the work its employees and volunteers do is something that’s important to St. Joseph’s General Hospital.

“I think people appreciate being appreciated,” said Steve Hill, the hospital’s director of pastoral care, mission and medical ethics, and organizer of the hospital’s staff appreciation events.

“And where there’s appreciation there’s kind of a sense of energy, and a sense of hope and a sense of we’re all in it together.”

The latest appreciation day, dubbed Gelato Day and held Thursday, featured live music from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the hospital cafeteria — as well as free gelato.

Ten local musical acts donated an hour each of their time to spice up the atmosphere in the cafeteria including: Tracy Canil, Divertimento Baroque Ensemble, Tammy Fassaert, Helen Austin, View’s Chime Bell Choir, Indigo Jazz, Dick Stuart, David Somers, Roger Helfrick, and Jenn Forsland and Luke Blu Guthrie.

The free gelato was made possible thanks to a donation from Piercy’s – Mt. Washington Funeral Home.

“We had the staff

serving the staff the gelato, and lots of banter, lots of fun, you know, chatter back and forth — it’s community building,” added Hill, who also organizes other similar days throughout the year.

The next one will be during the hospital’s week of pastoral care at the end of October, and musicians and free goodies will be on hand each day for the week.

Dale Graham, singer with Indigo Jazz and a physiotherapist at the hospital, said she often hears her co-workers talking about what a fantastic idea the appreciation days are, and she was pleased to donate her time as a musician on Gelato Day. “I love to sing and I like to share it with people, and I have a lot of investment in the colleagues that I work with here,” said Graham “So I’m pleased to give myself the chance to perform, and really pleased to support Steve’s efforts to bring some kind of — just lightening of the day of the people here who work so hard.”

Hill noted the idea first came up about two-and-ahalf years ago when a housekeeping staff member approached him with the suggestion not too long after he started working at the hospital. And as far as he knows, there weren’t staff appreciation days before he came.

Fishing Corner with Don Daniels email: dond@campbellrivermirror.com On Wednesday ay September 12th I made a visit to popular fishing areas in Campbell River which included Discovery Pier, Pink Salmon Tyee Club and Painters Lodge.

This time of year the fishing action slows down and the locals are getting ready for the chum and Coho. The pinks are coming to an end on the Campbell River but on any given day the anglers are fishing between the 2 bridges.

I have caught many pinks on the fly using a weighted green or pink fly, producing pinks at the old Alder pool.

Mel Adams caught the first spring at Discovery Pier on April 20th. To date 21 fish have been caught and reported. Hudson Johnson caught his Tyee on August 27th that came in at 42.5 ppounds and so far is the biggest. Steve Meszaros got a 34 pounder September 110th.The Tyee club has reported 31 fish ccaught this year and tto date Owen Lagos hhas the biggest Tyee ccoming in at 43 pounds. The season Last Days at the Tyee Pool came to an end on Saturday September 15th.

Fishing has been steady at Deep Water Bay and the Hump, but many anglers are coming up empty handed.

Few hatchery Coho are being caught and the chums are just around the corner. Checking the charts at Painters Lodge the fish are averaging 7 to 24 pounds spring.

Come out for the free fun fishing Derby at Roberts Lake and enjoy lemonade, hot dogs and chili served up by Lorna Duncan. There are lots of prizes to be won and draws to be made. Roberts Lake is located on the highway halfway between Campbell River and Sayward.

The nearly $50,000 of funding will be used in Alert Bay’s U’mista Cultural Centre to purchase specialized museum storage and shelving units and to complete a reorganization of the Centre’s historic Potlatch Collection.

A release from MP John Duncan’s office said that the project will improve the preservation of a unique and important part of the Kwakwaka’wakw people’s cultural traditions and provide greater public access to First Nations language, culture, and heritage.

“It is our fundamental priority to preserve U’mista’s historic, worldrenowned Potlatch Collection, which is a powerful catalyst for cultural learning and major source of pride in this community,” said Sarah Holland, Executive Director, U’Mista Cultural Centre. “We are very grateful for the crucial support from the Government

of Canada, which will allow us to improve the care of our collection, ensuring that our Potlatch Collection will be able tell the powerful stories of the Kwakwaka’wakw for generations to come.”

Duncan is quoted as saying, “This project will enhance the opportunity for Canadians to learn about the history and cultural traditions of this area and its people.

Our government is committed to the preservation of the Kwakwaka’wakw culture and continues to support Aboriginal organizations in their efforts to preserve and protect historically significant artifacts.”

In 2011 and 2012 the centre was engaged in exhange projects in Europe.

Last summer several artifacts were sent to a German museum while U’Mista hosted an exhibit of centuries-old items from the Saxon Sovereign Court.

Earlier this year, the Museum Volkenkunde in the Netherlands consigned local

Dutch videographer Herman de Boer tapes an interview with U’Mista Cultural Centre director Sarah Holland in front of the centre’s decorative wall earlier this summer. That’s how the city’s premiere dance instructor and artistic director Heather Gordon Murphy sees her world as she packs her bags for Azerbaijan in Eastern Europe where she will work with the Cirque team mounting a 400-person “spectacle” at the Sept.

Murphy, 54, originally a dance instructor, is well known in the city for her work with the Shoreline Music Theatre Society, Sweet Tease Burlesque, River City Players, Raincoast Creative Performing Arts and the Tidemark Youth Theatre.

“I look at Campbell River as sort of the wild west,” Murphy says.

“Because we’re here we have to adapt. We become so capable here. We tend to create things to happen or we go crazy.”

It was also her work with Australia’s David Atkins Enterprises, the company chosen to mount the opening and closing ceremonies at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

“I learned to do everything from operating a fork lift to putting 1,000 people on the floor with snowboards, to standing in for the Four Tenors for sound checks and I worked my butt off.”

It was at the 2010 Olympics that Murphy

learned the skill of choreographing mass groups.

It involved the complex task of matching the carefully-scripted movements of 1,000 volunteers to ensure they corresponded with every changing bar of music. In Baku, Azerbaijan, Murphy will be part of a fourperson team helping to choreograph 400 local volunteers for a sevenminute segment in the ceremonies.

The ceremonies and games will be televised in more than 150 countries.
