Fire destroys motorhome: A blaze Sept. 13 caused extensive damage to a residence and destroyed a motorhome belonging to Brian and Brenda Restall. Rimbey Fire Chief John Weisgerber said firefighters were called to the scene at 4926 57 Ave. at about 10:30 p.m. and battled the blaze until about 3 a.m. He said the fire began in the motorhome and spread to the residence that was in flames by the time the firemen arrived. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

Urgent care campaign now accepting donations; awaiting decision from AHS

By Steve Dills Sylvan Lake News The campaign to set up an urgent care centre in Sylvan Lake has taken on a new dimension with the ability to accept donations through David Thompson Health Trust.

Information will soon be going to residents in the Sylvan Lake-Bentley-Eckville region providing them with ways to donate toward equipment for a centre.

The committee promoting urgent care is also awaiting approval this month from Alberta Health Services (AHS) Central Region that an urgent care centre is included in the zone integrated plan.

That is vital, said Teresa Rilling, a member of the urgent care task force’s executive. “AHS has been notified regarding our desire to hear from them sooner than later. The decision is being made in September.”

Members of the task force met with AHS representatives in May and have since provided them with information from doctors serving the area that includes Sylvan Lake, the summer villages around the lake, Eckville and Bentley.

She indicated inclusion in the plan will address long-term solutions. In the meantime they’ve also pro-

posed short-term opportunities, something that was discussed with Health Minister Fred Horne when the executive committee met him earlier this year.

Urgent care is medical assistance of non-life threatening injuries seven days a week with extended hours and walk-in, Mayor Susan Samson told Rotary Club members recently. Those operating in the province now have day beds, doctors, nurses, are open extended hours seven days a week and have lab and X-ray facilities.

The committee’s suggestion for a short-term solution is that an urgent care centre be set up in the existing health centre which has lab and X-ray machines and that some of the people there be moved to rented locations elsewhere in town.

Rilling said the committee has supplied AHS with a list of landlords, vacancies and rates they were able to find and have had no response back.

“We’ve contacted AHS numerous times and are waiting for their response.”

As they wait, committee members have been busy on other fronts.

They signed an agreement with David Thompson Health Trust that opens up the opportunity for people to donate to urgent care in Sylvan Lake.

An irate resident has brought his complaint to council regarding speedsters in the Drader Crescent area.

At its regular meeting Sept. 10, council discussed a letter delivered by Brent Bratland to council asking that some action be taken regarding speeding motorists.

In his letter, Bratland said the south alley between the school property and his property seems to be used more like a racetrack than an alleyway.

Coun. Gayle Rondeel said speeding in the area needs to be looked at. “As far as I can see, it’s a problem waiting to happen.”

The organization “provides services to communities in support of their efforts to raise funds for health care,” according to their website. “Money raised is directed by the donors and the communities to support programs and services for quality sustainable health care.”

Fortner said because they’re centrally funded there are no costs to the rural communities for their services.

“Donations people make are used as they designated through the trust to the program you want to support. 100 per cent of every donation comes back to the community. We will work with the committee to help the committee reach it goals.”

Currently David Thompson Health Trust is working with 21 communities doing similar projects.

Rilling said the initial project of the

committee is to purchase procedural stretchers.

“It’s something we want to purchase that will eventually be used in an urgent care centre in Sylvan Lake.” But, she added, the sooner they could make the first purchase the better since it could be used as a visual prop when the committee is promoting urgent care.

“There’s no question in the community of whether or not there’s a need.

Now it’s a question of when are we going to take care of this urgent need?” said Rilling.

She encouraged people to continue writing letters, keeping the topic at the forefront. “They can’t ignore us anymore.”

The committee has also been forwarding letters to the health minister.

The group has a Facebook page set up at Sylvan Lake Urgent Care Committee. It includes information about their campaign and the addresses for the premier and health minister.

The 18 member urgent care committee includes representation from Eckville, Bentley, the five summer villages, two doctors, RCMP, fire department, a nurse, chamber of commerce representative and active community members.

Will policy create trust?

A little shame could go a long way to improving openness and transparency in spending at all feeding stations along the public trough.

Premieress Alison Redford recently announced Albertans will no longer pick up the George Brown tab for MLAs’ booze, Off the Record first-class travel and fancy dinners with their benchmates. The rules go into effect Oct. 1 and in December taxpayers can go online to review provincial politicians’ expense reports and detailed receipts with a fine-toothed comb. The policy also applies to the provincial bureaucracy: deputy ministers and press secretaries, chiefs of staff and senior officials appointed and paid by the government. It doesn’t directly apply to employees of arm’s-length commissions but Redford expects them to fall in line.

The “new” policy, which should have been the practice all along, will not automatically apply to municipal councils, school boards, health authorities and universities although they are accountable to the same taxpayers and are just as prone to abuse as the legislature.

Redford expects those governments and public boards to adopt similar disclosure and accountability policies.

And so should we. There is no reason in today’s world why a municipal council or school board cannot make its records database available for public scrutiny on its website, every month after the accounts are approved. The Town of Rimbey — not without a number of council spending controversies — posts a copy of each councillor’s monthly expense claim, signed off by the mayor. In the absence of a watchful ratepayers association, that’s the least we should expect from councillors who campaigned on a platform of openness and transparency.

Council’s best weapon to defend against charges of expense account abuse is to be proactive and disclose this information to the public. Audited financial statements at the end of the fiscal year will tell you how much the mayor and councillors were paid last year but you don’t know how much of the expense payment was for out-of-pocket costs, travel reimbursement, tickets to PC party fundraisers and golf tournaments, three-martini lunches or convention hotel Swedish massages.

Certainly town and county councillors and school trustees work hard for the stipend and they’re due any glory the position affords them. We shouldn’t begrudge a councillor flying first class the elbowroom to work on his laptop while flying to a conference across the country. He’s giving up a few days’ wages to learn how to be a better representative, cut the guy some slack. But it’s the folks like chronic abuser former federal cabinet minister Bev Oda and disgraced former provincial bureaucrat Allaudin Merali who claimed expensive restaurant meals and maintenance on his Mercedes who tarnish the good name and practices of our politicians and bureaucrats.

Hopefully this new policy will create more public confidence and comprehension of the actions of governors at all levels. There is value in hosting dignitaries, doing business over a glass of wine with dinner, or travelling to convince a CEO to relocate his company to Rimbey. But show us the reciepts.

This new policy, if adopted by all municipal councils and boards, will provide the transparency to help taxpayers understand these expenses are necessary and legitimate.

It will also treat taxpayers with respect instead of like mushrooms.

Public deserves power answers On July 9 six major electricity generators in Alberta unexpectedly shut off at roughly the same time when electricity demand was reaching a summer time high. According to the Alberta System Electric Operator (AESO) soaring temperatures on this Joe Anglin day drove Alberta’s deMLA Rimbeymand for electricity.

Rocky Mountain HouseAs the result of the Sundre shortage of electricity, widespread power outages spread out across the province, negatively affecting economic activity and endangering the safety of Albertans when traffic signals at busy intersections began to fail.

The unexpected shut down of the six generators also spiked electricity prices from $11/MW to $1,000/MW in a matter of minutes. Now electricity bills across Alberta are expected to rise in September, on average, 28 per cent to pay for the shortage of electricity on July 9.

What Albertans have not been told about the rolling blackouts of July 9, and what Albertans have not been told about the price gouging that subsequently followed is that the AESO also arbitrarily reduced electricity imports by 225 MW or 31 per cent, at the same time the system needed electricity.

Six generators shut off (tripped off-line) placing the system at risk of a possible blackout, but

only after the AESO arbitrarily and deliberately reduced imports by 225 MW did the rolling blackout actually happen. In effect, the AESO initiated and effectuated the rolling blackouts. The public will now be forced to pay for this debacle.

The public deserves answers. Knowing the lights were going to go out, who made the decision to limit electricity imports and begin the rolling blackouts? It is hard for me to imagine that a middle manager at the AESO would have the authority to make such a decision. It is even harder for me to imagine that a senior manager at the AESO would turn the lights off without first consulting with Alberta Energy. Most importantly, why should the public (hard working people, including our seniors, small business owners, and low-income citizens), pay for this mismanagement?

The public needs answers and this government has shown time and time again that it is not willing to provide answers. While transparency and accountability may be the official buzzwords in the premier’s office, findings of fact and official reports are missing in action. You might say they are virtually invisible. It’s not that the facts and reports do not exist — they do. They are just not available for the public to see and read.

So as Albertans pay this month’s outrageous electric bills, the minister of energy is withholding the Retail Market Review Committee’s 390-page report from the public, which includes 41 recommendations on how to improve electricity bills.

There is no rational or reasonable explanation why the public cannot see these recommendations.

After all, it’s the public that has to pay.

Dog owners need to be responsible Dear Editor: No thanks to those who take their dogs for walks and do not clean up after them.

It is disgusting to see or step in dog crap on sidewalks, streets and boulevards. People are inconsiderate and disrespectful to expect others to clean up after their dogs. Invitations sent to MP, MLA

By Treena Mielke At its regular meeting Sept. 10, Rimbey town council agreed to extend an invitation to Wetaskiwin MP Blaine Calkins and Rimbey-Rocky Mountain House-Sundre MLA Joe Anglin to provide them with an update and information on issues prevalent to the Rimbey area.

Complaint about water drainage Council acknowledged a letter from Joyce Tona concerning drainage. In her letter Tona noted that the water drain on the street on the west end of Legacy Lane is too high to take in the water that comes down in summer or to handle the run off that occurs during the rest of the year.

When the storm hits it causes a real flood as the water builds and roars down the street, finally pooling and remaining there until the next runoff. As the water backs up it also is building the silt with it and it is starting to build onto the curb and cement side-walk making it difficult to keep the walk clean, she said.

Council will send a written response to Tona advising her the raised manhole occurred because the pavement had settled. There are several such manholes in town and the issued is to be addressed during the town’s 2013 budgeting process.

Status quo for franchise fee rate Council agreed to keep the current franchise fee rate for Atco Gas at a 24 per cent surcharge and the surcharge at seven per cent for Fortis Alberta’s franchise fee.

Town to look at pool’s operation Council has requested a written report from recreation director Rick Kreklewich regarding the pool’s operation during the summer.

Councillors say operations went well overall for the first season but want to look at ways to improve service for next season.

Extending the length of time the pool is in operation may also be considered.

Purchasing offer denied Ponoka County council denied a buyer’s offer to purchase a D7 Cat and scraper.

The buyer offered $250,000 and a financial arrangement. The buyer would put $30,000 down and pay the rest in $10,000 deposits each month.

“My initial reaction was we are not in the finance business, nor have we ever been,” said Cutforth.

Cutforth brought the offer to the council, which decided the offer and financial arrangement weren’t in the county’s best interest.

Grader orders placed Council has decided to order three graders for next year.

Cutforth says the orders were placed Sept.

10 but the grader orders themselves will take six months.

The order will cost approximately $1.2 million but can be cancelled at any time said Cutforth.

According to Cutforth the cost of a grader is $300 less than last year.

APN Photo Submitted by the Alberta Government On Sept. 1, the Government of Alberta increased administrative penalties for drivers with blood alcohol concentrations (BAC) of .05 to .08.

Alberta has been using the .05 guideline for more than 12 years. Since 1999, a driver with a BAC in this range receives a 24-hour suspension. This sanction has not been stopping people from getting behind the wheel after drinking. Over the past five years, more than 42,000 24-hour suspensions were issued across Alberta.

The sanction for a BAC of .05 to .08 has changed to a three-day suspension and a three-day vehicle seizure for the first offence.

For subsequent offences, the length of the licence suspension will increase, the length of the vehicle seizure will increase and an educational course will be required. A hearing with the Alberta Transportation Safety Board may be required for a second offence and becomes mandatory for third and subsequent offences.

An appeal process is in place. At the roadside, a driver can request a second breath test from a second approved breath-testing device.

Also, licence suspensions longer than three

days and vehicle seizures longer than three days may be appealed through the Alberta Transportation Safety Board.

Tougher penalties for drivers with blood alcohol concentrations over .08 and for graduated licence drivers with blood alcohol concentrations over zero came into effect July 1.

Refusing to provide a breath sample will result in a criminal charge, just as it always has.

Popular Big Brothers Big Sisters expands expands to Bluffton

By Treena Mielke A social program that had its trial beginnings in Rimbey last year, has become firmly entrenched in the community and is now expanding to Bluffton.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Rimbey, celebrated its one-year anniversary in August and is being highlighted again this month as September is Big Brothers Big Sisters Month.

Program director Paula Madu said there are 20 young people matched with a Big Brother or Big Sister in Rimbey and six youngsters are on a waiting list.

Madu is pleased with the response the public has had to the program.

“It has been exceptional,” she said.

“The school is so excited about the program and so happy with the way things went last year. They very much believe in it and agree there has been lots of positive spin offs.”

Madu said businesses have also played a major role in the success of the program, as they have been willing to give employees the time off to spend time with their little brother or sister.

The program is to begin at Bluffton School.

“We are actively recruiting mentors in that area,” Madu said. “And we have an agreement with Bluffton School to

commence the program this fall.”

The Big Brothers Big Sisters program matches children who may benefit from interaction with a caring adult mentor. These mentors spend one hour one day a week with an elementary school child. The activities the child and mentor chose to do vary and can include reading, game playing, spending time in the gym, going for a walk, singing or simply talking.

Traditional matches involve spending more time with the child in a variety of settings.

“Simply giving of your time is what mentoring is all about,” said Madu.

On Sept. 12, Mayor Sheldon Ibbotson declared September to be Big Brothers Big Sisters Month in Rimbey.

He said evidence-based research shows the Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring model contributes directly to increased academic achievement, better family and peer relationships, a substantially lower reliance on social assistance, reduced criminal behavior and a more successful transition from school to work.

Project 84 to close its doors soon

By Treena Mielke Project 84, a Rimbey Lions Club initiated recycling project, will finally close its doors next month after serving as a recycling centre for many years for the community.

Rimbey assistant CAO Melissa Beebe said power and gas will be cut off in the building as of Oct. 26.

She encourages residents to use the curbside recycling pick up as an alternative to taking their recyclables to Project 84.

Beebe said the town is grateful to the Lions Club for initiating Project 84, noting the program served the town well in the past.

However, she said progress and change regarding recycling has been made in the community and curbside pick up and the recycling centre appear to be well used.

Town Coun. Gayle Rondeel agreed.

“When the Lions started Project 84 it was the envy of all the other surrounding communities,” she

said.

However, she noted residents are taking advantage of the recycle depot and the curbside pick up.

“We are definitely sending less garbage to the Bluffton landfill.”

Lion Ray Durand, who is in charge of Project 84 in the former Rimbey Community Centre and used primarily as a place to sort paper and glass, said it may close before the services are cut off.

“When my bins are full we will cut off all deliveries.”

Controversy over Project 84 began earlier this year when the building was deemed unsafe.

In February, Rimbey CAO Tony Goode sent a letter to the Lions Club and helping Hands, which was housed in the basement, asking them to vacate the premises.

Goode said it was costs the town $18,000 to subsidize the building and an inspector’s report stated the building was in a dilapidated condition with numerous cracks in the foundation.

Students and staff participate in Gorilla Run

By Treena Mielke Despite temperatures that hovered around 25 degrees Celsius, two Rimbey high school students and three staff from the school took part in a fivekilometre run held recently in Edmonton.

And, to add to the challenge, they competed while wearing full mountain gorilla suits.

Sixteen-year-old, Grade 12 student, Sydney Madu said the run was a fundraiser for the preservation of the Mountain Gorillas and suits were mandatory.

“It was very hot,” she said. “For me anyway, it was much more of a challenge.”

Seventeen-year-old Ryley Hohn, also in Grade 12, came in third in the race in which about 250 people participated, finishing the five kilometres in about 25 minutes, about six minutes longer than his usual time.

“I expected to do good, but I was pleased to get a medal. That was pretty cool.”

Both Hohn and Madu belong to the school’s cross-county running team and enjoy the sport.

Rimbey and area residents will have an opportunity to share in the celebration of Alberta Culture Days later this month when the Scandinavian Specialties concert comes to town.

Co-sponsored by the Beatty Heritage House Society and the Rimbey United Church Women, the concert will feature Edwin Erickson & His Orchestra, a talented group of central Alberta musicians.

Highlights of the concert will be selections by the famous composer Carl Jularbo, Sweden’s legendary King of the Accordion and compositions by Edwin Erickson to be featured by the orchestra in their 2013 tour to the United States and Scandinavia.

Erickson, who has performed and recorded in Canada, the USA, Sweden, Norway, Iceland and the Faeroe Islands, is a prolific composer of accordion music and has written more than 60 of his own compositions.

He will perform the most recent of these, the Blindman Valley Waltz, a Jularbo-style tune dedicated to the people of the Rimbey area. Three CDs containing the Blindman Valley Waltz will be given as door prizes at the concert.

Erickson, who was raised near Drayton Valley, began playing accordion at 14 years of age and learned most of his early

music through listening to the recordings of his idol, Carl Jularbo.

Ken Lambert, who plays guitar for the group, received his early musical training from Erickson, who lived in Buck Lake at the time. Classical guitarist Ben Tobiasson of Warburg was also one of his first instructors. He later became a protégé of world-renowned American concert guitarist and educator, Christopher Parkening.

Presently, Lambert performs with his own club band, Black Water Crude and working on his own classical guitar repertoire.

Allan Valberg, who plays second accordion and digital bass, spent his formative musical years as a student in Norway where he studied with some of the country’s best accordionists. Since that time, he has performed independently and with Edwin Erickson in a variety of musical settings.

Connie Jenson, the band’s drummer and vocalist, is a Rimbey High School graduate and a former teacher and administrator who plays the drums and is the group’s vocalist.

Jenson’s musical gifts are well known in Rimbey where she is the resident organist in the Rimbey Anglican Church of the Epiphany and sings alto with the Rimbey Community Chorus.

The concert will be held at Rimbey United Church on Sept. 30 at 2 p.m.

Drama reveals tragedy of human trafficking

By Treena Mielke The Rimbey Chapter of Amnesty International is doing its part to raise community awareness about the tragedy of human trafficking.

The group is arranging for a bus to travel to Red Deer so they can watch the powerful drama, She Has A Name, which will be presented at the Scott Block Theatre Oct. 2 to 6.

A matinee performance will also be held on Oct. 6, following which the audience is invited to a talk-back session with a panel including a former prostitute, two representatives from international organizations who have helped remove children from sex rings and an RCMP officer.

Anna van Haastert, a member of the local Amnesty Chapter, said the play is heart-wrenching, raw and a real eye opener about human trafficking.

“It is a voice for the voiceless,” she said. “And it’s a Canadian project dealing with human rights.”

The play, She has A Name, by award winning playwright Andrew Kooman, is a story about a Canadian lawyer working undercover to expose a human trafficking ring based in Thailand. To win his case, the lawyer needs to convince his key witness, a young woman forced to work as a prostitute and known only as Number 18, to risk her life and testify.

The voices of four female victims who did not survive being sex slaves add to the chilling drama.

Rimbey native Alysa van Haastert plays the role of Ali, the lawyer’s wife, who lives at home in Canada with their two young daughters. Although separated from Ali by the Pacific Ocean, Jason draws strength from his wife and confidante via telephone and by video through Skype.

Van Haastert, who also doubles as a voice in the play, said her role is challenging and rewarding.

“It’s a really beautiful part of the story,” said van Haastert.

The 23-year-old actress, who graduated from Rosebud School of the Arts earlier this year, said the play is a moving portrait of human trafficking that carries with it an urgent message.

“You have to be brave to see the play. It’s hard, but it’s the first step (toward awareness) and you will leave

Playwright Andrew Kooman said the tragedy of Number 18’s plight in She Has A Name highlights real justice needs to be secured for the real victims around the world. It also suggests that justice can only be realized if real people know, care and take informed and decisive action.

“Telling stories that remind us of the immeasurable value of human life is the first step of many to transform real world stories of injustice and tragedy into stories of redemption and hope.”

Kooman said it is a privilege for him to have his play go across Canada and he is pleased with the positive response it has received.

“I love the theatre and I’m passionate about this issue.”

Number 18 is played by Vancouver actress Evelyn Chew and Vancouver and

Seattle-based actor Carol Kennedy plays Jason, the Canadian lawyer.

Including Red Deer, Burnt Thicket Theatre in partnership with Raise Their Voice has presented She Has A Name in 13 cities and seven provinces across Canada.

Raise Their Voice uses story, song, theatre, film to bring awareness to the plight of vulnerable and exploited people Burnt Thicket Theatre is an emerging Alberta company striving to bringing meaningful subject matter to its audience through talented and committed artists.

RCMP deal with thieves, drunks and motor vehicle collisions Rimbey RCMP responded to 51 calls for service this week. Highlights of the week include a large number of motor vehicle collisions, uttering threats to kill, theft, criminal harassment and other serious criminal matters.

Disqualified drunk caught driving On Sept. 7, an alert officer on patrol noticed a local 28-year-old woman cruising down an alleyway in her bright red 2002 Pontiac Sunfire.

The young lady was disqualified from driving as a result of a recent conviction for drunk driving.

As such, she was charged for driving while pro-

hibited. She also received over $3,000 in fines and had her car towed and impounded.

Should have sobered up first A 43-year-old man, a resident of Rimbey, walked to the detachment Sept. 7 to “check in” as ordered by the judge as a result of previous criminal matters he faced. He is on court-imposed conditions to not consume any alcohol whatsoever.

As he swaggered up the street on his way to the police station an officer stopped to chat with him and found him to be “sauced” at 9:30 in the morning. He was again charged for breaching his court

So much to learn about driving Last Sunday morning at approximately 4 a.m., officers stopped a car that had left a bush party. The driver, a 20-year-old man, a resident of Rimbey who only had a class 7 drivers license was found to be intoxicated.

He was arrested and charged with impaired driving and had the car he “borrowed” seized and impounded.

It was found during the investigation that he had also committed a hit and run at the party prior to being stopped by police. In addition, he was charged with leaving the scene of an accident.

Musical chairs to Jailhouse Rock On Sept. 9, a Rimbey Mountie patrolling Highway 20 noticed a vehicle at the intersection of Leedale Road. The officer became suspicious when the driver and the passenger suddenly did musical chairs when they saw the police car. The former passenger, an 18-year-old man who is a resident of Rimbey, provided a breath sample and as a result lost his driving privileges and had his car seized and towed to the impound lot.

Wanted man on the lam Police responded to a domestic dispute in progress Sept. 10. Officers quickly attended the residence but the male offender, who is currently “wanted” by police on other charges, had already fled the scene to avoid being arrested. The man is being sought by police in relation to the other charges as well as a new one he earned for his quick visit to Rimbey.

Big Tex’s trailer stolen On Sept. 10, police investigated the theft of a single-axle 12-foot black Allendale trailer that was sto-

len from behind a business in town.

The trailer had “Big Tex” written on it. That same day, officers responded to a complaint of theft from a gas plant west of town on Secondary Highway 607. The crime occurred that night at 3 a.m. The thieves stole a 300-metre roll of copper wire from the site. Mounties are currently following up on leads in this case.

Man with a gun arrested On the evening of Sept. 12, officers responded to a “man with a gun” complaint near Iola Road. Breton and Rimbey members responded quickly and apprehended the man without incident.

Even though entries were up overall, with a total of 65 adult entries, the number of junior entries was slightly down, indicated convener Lorraine Neal.

There were 15 adult firsts, 12 seconds and 10 third placings with 18 firsts, 15 seconds and 12 thirds given to juniors.

The overall winners and Judgesí Choice winners for adults were Lisa Neal (painting) and Leo de Groot (photography), and for juniors was Samantha Frattaroli (junior drawing) and Loden Neal (junior photography).

Judges were Jody Rawlyck for the photography, and Jeanette Van Hyfte and Suzan King for the art and painting section. Especially helpful volunteers were Pam Jones, Michele Mackintosh, Rhonda Szasz and daughter Brooke, and some of Brooke's friends.

Neal had a special display of her photos set up at the rear of the exhibit area adding to the show.

In a different category, Sheila Budd was the busy judge for the 314 entries in the Crafts, Hobbies & Amateur Photography section of the 2012 fair. There were 40 preschool, 92 junior, and 49 young adult entries, up 88 from 2011, said convener Joan Dickau

Hockey and CanSkate to begin

By Treena Mielke The face of recreation in Rimbey is changing with the season, and even as the water is drained out of the outdoor pool, preparations are being made to put the ice in the arena, readying the rink for a busy winter.

Recreation director Rick Kreklewich said ice is scheduled to be in today. (Sept. 17), which is none too soon for young hockey players ready to begin the season.

Kreklewich said the ice was put in Sept. 12 last year because a hockey camp was held prior to the regular season.

“This year it went in a week later to coincide with the regular arena season and minor hockey conditioning camp,” he said.

Minor hockey president Lane Moore said the minor hockey program in Rimbey remains solid with the number of participants in Initiation and Tiny Mites showing an increase.

“It’s good to see lots of young players coming up,” he said.

Numbers for the remainder of the teams appear to be remaining steady, he added. “We are still waiting to finalize numbers. We may have split Bantams.”

The roster for the midget team takes the longest to fill, he added.

Parents who wish to register their child for minor hockey can go to rimbeyminorhockey.com.

Minor hockey referees are needed, Moore noted,

adding a referee clinic will be held Oct 13 and 14.

Anyone who is interested in referring or coaching should check out the website.

CanSkate and PowerSkate are also popular this year and coach Kathleen Moore said the programs are full and youngsters are on a waiting list.

The Skate Canada programs will be held Fridays from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. and seven levels of skating techniques will be offered.

Moore, who has taught the programs in Rimbey for four years, said the skills learned in CanSkate and PowerSkate are great pre-requisites for skaters who want to pursue hockey or ringette.

“It works on speed and agility and really helps fine tune the skills for hockey players or ringette players.”

Moore, a level 2 certified skating coach will be assisted by Joslyn Snow.

CanSkate and PowerSkate will begin Oct. 12.

Pond hockey is also being offered this year and RaeAnn Keessar, whose husband Roy coaches the teams, said 44 players have registered. Teams include three- to six-year-olds, seven- to 10-year-olds and 11to 15-year-olds.

The hockey program provides weekly practices and two to three games per month played against pond hockey teams from surrounding communities.

The three- to six-year-olds have practices only, but may play against another team near the end of the season.

Pond hockey gives young players a chance to play the game in a less competitive setting,” said Keessar.

“By playing less games the kids are able to be involved in other school sports or spend time doing other family activities,” she said.

Recreation centres need to adopt healthy eating rules Alberta’s recreation centres need to be more active in adopting provincial guidelines for offering healthy food on their menus and in vending machines, says a University of Alberta researcher.

Of 151 rec centres surveyed by U of A nutrition researcher Dana Olstad, only six per cent are implementing the Alberta Nutrition Guidelines for Children and Youth, which were introduced in 2008 for

voluntary use by schools, child care centres and recreation facilities.

More than half of food customers in recreation centres are youths or children, she noted.

Olstad, a registered dietitian and a PhD candidate in the U of A’s Department of Agricultural, Food and Nutritional Science, hopes the findings, recently published in the journal BMC Public Health, encourage greater uptake of the provinceís

The guidelines would be more effective if they were made mandatory, she added.

Recreation centres, with their emphasis on physical activity, can play a valuable role in influencing healthy lifestyle choices, and while food safety rules are in place to protect the public, the same doesnít always apply for nutritional value, she noted.

Bridge renewal on Highway 20 over Blindman will improve safety Bridge rehabilitation work began Sept. 17 on the bridge carrying Highway 20 traffic over the Blindman River north of Rimbey. The contractor, Alberco Construction Ltd., expects project completion by Oct. 31, weather permitting.

This project will ensure the long-term structural integrity of the bridge and protect Alberta’s investment in our infrastructure. It includes a new concrete bridge deck, important safety upgrades and some standard maintenance and repairs.

To ensure a safe work zone, traffic will be reduced from two lanes to one lane on Highway 20 with a maximum lane width of 4.5 metres. Only one direction of travel will be affected at a time to reduce the impact on travelers.

Motorists are asked to drive courteously in the construction zones and obey all posted speed limits, signs and flag people. Fines for speeding are doubled when workers are present.

Crack shooters win turkeys at fun event

By Treena Mielke The crack of gunshots split the September afternoon stillness when more than 30 competitors lined up the sites of their rifles against man made targets for a chance to bring home a Thanksgiving turkey.

The turkey shoot, held Sept. 10 at the gun club range southeast of Rimbey was a joint effort by Rimbey Fish and Game Association and Blindman Valley Rod and Gun Club.

The event attracted 32 participants and several onlookers were on hand to cheer them on.

Allan Muddle and Rob Schultz worked together to organize the event and both were pleased with the volunteer help and the turnout.

“We were quite happy,” said Muddle. “We are already thinking about having another one next year.”

He said safety was a primary concern for everyone involved and holding the turkey shoot at the range ensured that safety would be a priority.

“It is a safe, secure facility and it worked very well,” said Muddle.

Schultz agreed that the event went smoothly.

“There was lots of smiling, happy faces out there,’’ he said. “Everyone had fun and it was very simple to organize.”

Mike Jarvis from Bashaw won the first ‘gong’ event, which required hitting a four- inch steel circle attached to a frame with string. He hit the circle at 35 yards using a .22-calibre rifle.

“I guess I’m just lucky,” he said. “It was my first ever competition.”

The 23-year-old was pleased to have won a turkey. “I guess I’m having Thanksgiving.”

Muddle won the second ‘gong’ event, along bringing home a turkey.

“We will have to invite some company to help us eat it,” he said.

The winner of the men’s competition was Fred Schultz, and Scott Beaulieu won the open category.

Josh Schultz won the youth category and Rocky Armstrong was the winner in the 50-yard long shot.

The women’s competition was won by Elaine Neilly.
