A planned new waste-to-energy (WTE) plant for Metro Vancouver might burn not only regular garbage, but also special wastes that are now shipped out of B.C. That’s the thinking of some Metro directors who argue an advanced new

plant might be able to handle dangerous hospital waste, foreign waste from cruise ships or airlines and maybe even oil-contaminated soils or other materials.

A site for the new incinerator has not yet been chosen, but it’s possible it may be in the Lower Mainland. Opponents of such a plan cite serious air pollution

concerns in the Valley.

Abbyfest continues to grow Founder Musleh Hakki was able to greet the 5,500 to 6,000 guests to Abbyfest in 17 different languages on Saturday.

The all-day celebration of diversity at the Ag Rec Building began with a Flag of Nations parade that saw 62 countries represented by people of all ages dressed in their national costumes.

Hakki gave credit to 200 volunteers who help make the free-admission, non-profit event possible.

It grows a little each year, and is up from 5,000 people last year, he said.

Hakki expects it to do slightly better than break even again this year.

“I think we should be dealing with our waste in our own region instead of putting it off to somebody else,” he said.

The idea was raised as Metro directors agreed they need 370,000 tonnes per year of new WTE capacity after the region stops trucking trash to the Cache Creek Landfill in 2016.

Currently, the city has a bylaw which bans needle exchanges, which Fraser Health would like to see changed.

The decision is a reversal of what was approved in June.

Originally, council put aside a staff recommendation to consult with Fraser Health and service providers in favour of going straight to the public to gauge

if there was an appetite to change the bylaw.

But Mayor Bruce Banman served notice that the decision would be revisited.

Simon Gibson, who voted against the change, said the new motion gets Fraser Health and the service groups “involved too early” in the process.

He said it doesn’t make sense to go

through a “laborious process” just to find out that the public doesn’t want to change the bylaw.

But Banman said it “only makes sense to bring together all of those professionals that deal with addiction” along with the public, to discuss what harm reduction is.

He said an important part of the solution would be a detox centre.

An autopsy concluded that Acorn had died from blunt-force trauma to her head and face.

West, 60, and his son, Dustin Moir, 27, were charged with Acorn’s murder in March 2007 and went on trial in November 2009. Two months later, West’s trial was separated from his son’s.

Moir was convicted in February 2010 of first-degree murder and received a life sentence with no parole eligibility for 25 years.

Much of the evidence at Moir’s trial focused on a “Mr. Big” undercover operation by police who posed as members of a criminal organization promising a lucrative future to Moir.

The timing of when a new water source will be needed, where it will come from and whether the current system can deliver are some of the questions set to be discussed at a future joint council meeting between the City of Abbotsford and the District of Mission.

The decision to hold a joint session was made during Thursday’s Abbotsford Mission Water and Sewer Commission (AMWSC) meeting.

During last month’s AMWSC, Abbotsford Coun. Henry Braun announced his intention to call for an independent review of the two communities’ water plan.

Braun maintained a new water supply is not the main issue, but rather the infrastructure’s capacity to deliver it.

Braun based his position on a report which stated the current capacity of the water system is 155 million litres a day (MLD), meaning the system can only distribute a maximum of 155 MLD before the reservoir begins to drain.

About half the reservoir capacity must be maintained at all times in case of a major fire.

Braun said he saw no reason to add a new water source, to add to the approximately 170 MLD currently available, when the system can only distribute 155 MLD. City staff pointed out that servicing and im-

proving the distribution system is an ongoing job and has been since Abbotsford and Mission took over the water system from the Fraser Valley Regional District in 2005.

Conservation efforts, awareness and a new billing cycle in Abbotsford seem to have created a new trend of declining water use. So far in 2012, the peak capacity day has only reached 95.5 MLD as compared to the record high of 139.2 MLD in 2007.

While the numbers are encouraging, some commission members are wary of calling the recent decline a trend.

“I’m not confident doing that,” said Abbotsford Mayor Bruce Banman.

He said a trend cannot be based on only a couple of years of information, and staff engineers would have been “reckless” to do so.

Mission staff also presented the findings of that city’s latest water study which indicated that a water metering system in Mission could help to maximize the lifespan of the current supply another 10 to 20 years.

Braun agreed to table his motion for a review until after the joint council meeting.

At the meeting, councillors will also discuss several possible sources of water. They include the expansion of Norrish Creek, Cannell Lake, Miracle Valley, Stave Lake, the Fraser River and joining Metro Vancouver’s water system.

The rejuvenated Abbotsford run had 250 participants and 100 volunteers this year.

They raised $6,500 so far, with more donations to come. It has been 32 years since Fox’s Marathon of Hope, and each year more than a million Canadians take part in fundraising runs, and have garnered more than $600 million for cancer research.

It was revealed during Moir’s trial that Acorn might have been murdered because she had witnessed a drug deal.

At the start of West’s trial, Crown counsel alleged that West killed Acorn because there was an issue between her and his son, and West wanted to “bury the problem.”

Hempstead told the court the murder was planned two weeks in advance, and West purchased a shovel to dig the grave.

Warm Zone sets standard

The Warm Zone has been saved for another year, thanks to funding from the provincial government.

Now it’s time for Abbotsford city hall to get behind the facility.

It is impressive how the work being done by coordinator Michele Giordano and her staff gets the unqualified support of everyone who is familiar with the Warm Zone, and the services it provides for “street engaged” women.

The fact that it has the endorsement of the Abbotsford Police Department – the downtown bike squad members in particular – speaks volumes.

Pastor Ward Draper of 5 and 2 Ministries praises their efforts as the epitome of outreach work.

And B.C. Finance Minister Michael de Jong summed it up nicely with, “It saves lives and changes lives.”

That was last Tuesday, as de Jong was announcing $172,000 in funding.

The Warm Zone needs a new location, and a stable source of funding. The province has provided only a one-time

grant, with no guarantee of future financial assistance.

If the City of Abbotsford can’t get behind this project because of its controversial harm reduction bylaw, and the fact the Warm Zone offers a needle exchange, it is time that out-of-date bylaw was repealed. It is out of step with the services other municipalities provide to people who are addicted and living on the streets. It has been criticized by health officials.

There are clear and compelling justifications for needle exhanges in terms of health issues, and health care cost savings.

It’s also misguided to think that those who are caught up in a street lifestyle here have come from some other city.

Many are Abbotsford people, and if they are indicative of a problem in society, it is also Abbotsford’s problem to wrestle with.

Part of a comprehensive, modern program is stable funding for the Warm Zone.

Other Hand Thirty years ago, my sons discovered the ‘infant’ sport of bicycle motocross, or BMX. The light little bikes, thanks to strides in metallurgy, were the new sport for kids, allowing them to propel these units around a hill-filled course with speeds approaching those of motocross motorcycles (well at least the speed I would ride a dirt bike).

Then, as the boys grew older they transitioned to road racing bicycles, and eventually adopted the latest cycling fad – mountain biking.

And co-incidental with them moving on to other two-wheeled sports, BMX waned in popularity for some years. The motocross action was back to gas-powered, noisy and very fast motorcycles.

However, a number of years ago, BMX made a resurgence. It was some-

what less expensive for families to get their young kids into a sport, and a whole lot less dangerous.

Eventually, BMX was accepted – because so many other bicycling activities were already a part of it – as a Summer Olympic event.

In Abbotsford, a few far-thinking folks convinced city council to create a track at Exhibition Park, and for a few years the course attracted kids and competitors from across the Lower Mainland.

They even progressed to provincial and national events.

Then, when the probability of BMX becoming an Olympic sport arose, the local group decided to go all out.

They built a new track, made it competitive, and eventually developed an Olympic-class rider, along with hundreds of other young aspiring racers.

Not only is Abbotsford’s BMX track an outstanding result of volunteerism, fundraising and community dedication, it is now a premier, world-class venue.

In fact, our BMX race course is one of only three such courses in North America, and is one of only 10 worldwide. It is that good, and this past weekend, it was the last stop on the

BMX world-cup circuit with riders representing 14 nations.

It is a credit to our community, and an incredible expression of what a few dedicated people can accomplish, to not only entertain and develop the competitive spirit in children but teach them

...they lead by example to their children the benefits of healthy activity. life skills and values through sport.

Lest you think this only an activity of kids, the elite riders on the world cup circuit are men and women ranging, this weekend, up to 42 years old.

Like any significant competitive sport, it takes years of practice and competition.

It is the genesis of the activity that is important, because it leads kids into physical activity, teaches them to strive for success while accepting the realities of loss and defeat. The life skills

learned in any sport develop respect, honour and fairness, while creating healthy bodies. These learned skills are life-long, and generate an appreciation that is passed on to their children.

I know the value of that in my own sons. Though they left BMX long ago, they still compete in many elite sports and activities – the recent Tough Mudder in Whistler, and last week’s Cultus Lake triathlon in which they placed among the best competitors, and finishing 10th and 13th in their age group.

Whether it’s swimming, running, mountain biking, skiing or whatever sport they participate in, they not only derive personal satisfaction, they lead by example to their children the benefits of healthy activity.

And they are not alone, for all those other young men and women who actively participate in sport actively participate in life, and they pass on such attributes and beliefs to their children.

Not all will be winners, however, they will become involved . . . and that is what will keep our community, and through it society, strong. markrushton@abbynews.com

With BC Liberals jumping ship en masse, I reflected on my role in helping to destroy this 21st century free enterprise party.

Paying $10 to join the party short term and vote in Christy Clark seemed like the only thing to do. Clark winning 52-48 was probably the last thing any ‘true’ B.C. Liberal wanted. So I take some credit in helping to make a permanent change in B.C. politics.

Given that electoral voting reform failed, and no Liberals I shared the stage with in the last election were supportive of BC-STV, it should be no surprise that power will fall to the NDP again.

Conservative leader John Cummins and company (or will it be a shinier suit for the BC Cons?) will surely help split the vote up and get even more NDP into Victoria.

I’ll probably still be stuck paying 12 per cent on private sales of vehicles and trying to figure out why I am another $15,000 in the hole from the days of HST. Having removed my name from the voters list, I am doubtful I’ll even bother adding it back on next May. I told you so.

350,000 pounds of food donated to charity

An estimated 350,000 pounds of food was collected on Saturday as the BC Thanksgiving Food Drive (BCTFD) wrapped up a week-long campaign.

In the Fraser Valley region, the BCTFD event included more than 1,000 volunteers providing over 2,500 hours of service to the community.

They were able to visit 39,000 homes and collected more than 55,000 pounds of non-perishable food for the local food banks which include Abbotsford Food Bank, St. Joseph’s Food Bank of Mission, Salvation Army Community Food Bank in Chilliwack, Friends in Need Food Bank in Maple Ridge and Langley Food Bank.

The food was collected after the BCTFD distributed brown shopping bags to homes.

UFV celebrates new building University of the Fraser Valley is celebrating the opening of its newest buildings at the Chilliwack campus at the Canada Education Park with a combo of party and tour.

The Come See What’s New at Your U bash is set for Thursday, Sept. 20 in Chilliwack.

The public can check out the new facilities, learn about what is being studied there, and visit with representatives from many UFV courses and departments.

The kinesiology department is teaming up with the golf team to offer a golf clinic; the agriculture zone will feature some of its berry industry partners, and the health sciences, theatre, and other departments will also be on site.

A 1941 Ford pickup gets extra special attention from owner Bryan Lewis from New Westminster, who took part in the Historic Downtown Abbotsford Car Show on Saturday. There were a record number of vehicles entered, with well over 350 in the show, as well as thousands of visitors.

Ten men caught in John Sting The Abbotsford police arrested 10 men during a John Sting conducted on Thursday and Friday (Sept. 13 and 14).

Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald said the men face charges of communicating for the purposes of prostitution.

They were released on a promise to attend John School, after which charges will be dropped, or they can choose to go through the court process.

John School is a education program that teaches potential sex trade consumers about the victimization of prostitutes from a

physical, emotional and societal standpoint. There is anecdotal evidence that the school is effective.

“We have found the likelihood of encountering them again engaging with sex trade workers is slim,” said MacDonald, and added that if the accused are charged a second time they will not be given the opportunity to avoid the courts.

The John Sting was conducted in two areas – the historic downtown area, and in the centre of the city – but most of the charges resulted from the downtown sting.

Abbotsford isn’t the only community going after the 2016 or 2018 BC Summer Games.

Last week, the BC Games Society announced Coquitlam, Cowichan Valley and Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows also submitted bids to host the sporting event in 2016. The same municipalities – plus North Vancouver – have also opted to host the games two years later.

The city will budget $60,000 ($30,000 in both 2015 and 2016) and $50,000 in additional in-kind services and facilities, if the bid is successful.

If Abbotsford does host the 2016 games, 3,700 athletes – most aged 13 to 15 – would descend on the city between July 21-24 to compete in 22 sports.

The event would generate significant economic activity. In 2008, Kelowna reportedly reaped $2.6 million in spin-offs by hosting the four-day summer competition.

The BC Games Society provides event management services and $600,000 in provincial funding.

The society also leaves behind a financial legacy. In the past two games, a gift of more than $75,000 was presented to the host communities.

The society will review and score the applications before making its recommendation to MLA Bill Bennett, minister of community, sport and cultural development. A decision is expected in November.

Double Dutch: Smulders, van Gendt sweep at World Cup

When the dust had (literally) settled at Abbotsford’s Exhibition Park on Saturday afternoon, the first-ever BMX Supercross World Cup event to be held in Canada had turned into a Dutch treat.

Laura Smulders and Twan van Gendt of the Netherlands won the women’s and men’s races, respectively, at the final event of the World Cup season.

Both races were wars of attrition that showcased both the pulse-pounding excitement and the fragile nature of success in the sport of BMX. In the women’s final, American rider Felicia Stancil was poised for her first World Cup win, holding a comfort-

able lead heading towards the final corner. But the world junior champion crashed in the third rhythmic section, and Australia’s Lauren Reynolds, who had been running second, was caught up in the wreckage.

That opened the door for Smulders, the bronze medalist at the London Olympics, to pick up her first World Cup triumph.

“I was lucky I didn’t crash over,” Smulders marveled afterward. “I passed her (Stancil) on the outside, and I ran into her bike.”

Van Gendt made it a Dutch double, winning a men’s final which was similarly crash-marred.

The Ice Hawks beat the Pilots 3-1 in their regular season opener at MSA Arena, a game which re-ignited one of the Pacific International Junior Hockey League’s great rivalries.

Last season, the Ice Hawks beat the Pilots in a six-game series to claim the PIJHL championship, but Abbotsford bounced back to win the Cyclone Taylor Cup provincial crown and the Keystone Cup Western Canadian title.

“It’s always a battle,” Delta coach Dave McLellan noted with a grin. “I think the league did a good thing, scheduling the two teams that played in the final last year (to open the season).

You obviously develop a rivalry when you play as many games as we did, and the battle that we had.”

On Friday, Delta got goals from Kristofer Melna, Anthony Brito and

Alex Martin, while Mike Tebbutt replied for the Pilots.

Abbotsford coach Jim Cowden was pleased with the performance of goalie Aaron Oakley, who made 38 saves, and with his youthful blueline corps. But he said the Pilots’ forwards need to be better, particularly in their own zone.

“We did a lot of running around,” Cowden said. “Our D was good, but our forwards weren’t so good. There wasn’t enough urgency, and too many shots were getting through.”

The Pilots bounced back with a 4-2 road win over the Port Moody Panthers on Saturday, out-shooting the hosts 4319. Brandon Daase, Chris Vinette, Dakota Schipper and Kyle Star scored the Abby goals, while Oakley was named first star of the game. n The Pilots are back in action on Friday, as they host the Aldergrove Kodiaks (7:30 p.m., MSA Arena).

Cascades soccer women light up scoreboard vs. UNBC The University of the Fraser Valley women’s soccer squad turned in a record-setting offensive performance on Sunday, crushing the UNBC Timberwolves 7-0 in Prince George.

The T-Wolves are in

their first season of Canada West play, and the Cascades trounced the newbies behind a two-goal outing by striker Carly Neeson.

Corneil also scored for UFV, while keepers Chantelle Biagioni and Kayla Klim shared the shutout.

The Cascades set a team record for margin of victory, and their seven-goal outburst is the

most they’ve scored in a game during coach Rob Giesbrecht’s three-season tenure.

“UNBC was organized and played hard,” said Giesbrecht, whose team improved to 2-1-0.

“We were able to score

a couple key goals early, enabling me to give our young players valuable time on the pitch.” n The UFV men’s soccer squad faced two of Canada West’s traditional powerhouses – UBC and Trinity Western – as they

opened the regular season.

Van Gendt stayed vertical and fended off Australia’s Sam Willoughby for the victory. It marked the fourth runner-up finish in four World Cup races for Willoughby, and he overtook Fields for the overall series title.

“I saw Laura winning, and I said, ‘I can’t stay behind now,’” said van Gendt, who was the fifth-place finisher at the Olympics. “I still can’t believe it.”

Nyhaug hopped back on his bike and pedalled his way to fourth place in Saturday’s race, and he also picked up a silver medal in Friday’s

time trial event. The Canadian Olympian covered the course in 30.396 seconds, finishing just behind Willoughby (30.073) and ahead of van Gendt (30.502).

“I’m really happy,” Nyhaug said. “It’s my first time trial podium of the year.”

In the women’s time trail, Australian Caroline Buchanan (33.667 seconds) was the winner, followed

by Stancil (34.073) and Smulders (34.610).

Buchanan crashed early in Saturday’s final, but she got back up and finished fifth, which was enough to clinch the overall points title.

Baertschi, Brodie, Bouma among players sent to Heat From A22

Ward, as it turns out, may have dodged a bullet by passing on the Islanders job – the onceproud New York franchise has been an on-ice disaster in recent years, missing the playoffs six of the past seven seasons.

But in any event, the latest NHL work stoppage – it began at midnight Saturday with the collective bargaining agreement expiring and the team owners locking out the players – will transform the hockey landscape for as long as it persists.

The American Hockey League suddenly becomes the top pro hockey circuit on the continent.

It’s a scenario last seen in 2004-05, when the AHL

was sprinkled with starsin-waiting who would have otherwise been in the big league. Then as now, players age 22 and under who were on entrylevel contracts were allowed to be sent down during the lockout.

Jason Spezza, Ryan Miller, Mike Richards, Jeff Carter, Eric Staal, Ryan Kesler, Zach Parise, Ryan Suter and Marc-Andre Fleury were among the luminaries during that memorable AHL season.

The current crop of AHLbound talent is highlighted by the Oklahoma City Barons. The Edmonton Oilers’ affiliate boasts an impressive collection of young studs, including Jordan Eberle, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Justin Schultz.

Other budding stars sent to the AHL include Jeff Skinner (Carolina Hurricanes/Charlotte Checkers), Cody Hodgson (Buffalo Sabres/Rochester Americans), Adam Henrique (New Jersey Devils/Albany Devils) . . .

and the list goes on.

“Every team will have that trickle-down,” Ward noted. “Whether you like the Heat or you just like a good brand of hockey, you’re going to see a lot of hockey’s future at this level. It’s exciting.”

The Heat’s roster has been fortified by the likes of Sven Baertschi, T.J. Brodie and Lance Bouma.

They’re among a group of 23 players sent to Abbotsford by the Calgary Flames late last week.

Brodie and Bouma spent the bulk of last season with the Flames, while Baertschi, a 19-year-old forward entering his first full pro season, is the organization’s top prospect.

He averaged two points per game in the Western Hockey League in 201112, and scored three goals in five games with the Flames during an emergency recall in March.

“Sven’s a dynamic guy,” Ward said. “It’s a pretty exciting time to be a coach in the American League, to have that calibre of

player coming through . . .

We might have never seen him in Abbotsford.”

The influx of talent combined with the absence of NHL hockey should provide a box-office boost for AHL teams. During the last lockout, attendance increased 6.5 per cent during the regular season, and the league set a total attendance record with over seven million spectators (including playoffs).

The Heat, who have struggled to draw fans during their three years in Abbotsford, are wellpositioned to take advantage of the NHL’s absence.

SCHLECTER Wolfgang 1931 ~ 2012 Wolfgang (Wolf) Schlecter passed away peacefully at Royal Columbian Hospital on September 6th, 2012. Wolf was born in Wappertal, Germany and immigrated to Canada, “I wanted to try something different.”, in 1953.

In his own words, “I have had a good life.”

If the measure of a man is reflected by the women who loved him, he was truly extraordinary. He is predeceased by his wife Irmgard and companion Sinaida. He will be lovingly remembered by his companion June, his stepsons Glen (Courtnae) and Andre (Michele), and stepgrandchildren Colum and Rowynn.

We thank the wonderful nurses (Lisa, Sari, Josephine) and staff at the Royal Columbian Hospital ICU for your compassionate care, which made this time a little more bearable.

FAST, Marilyn February 9th, 1936 September 10th, 2012 Marilyn Fast went home to be with her Lord on September 10th, 2012. She will be remembered and cherished by her loving husband of 55 years, Ernie, and their daughters and son-in-laws, Cheryl Fast, Bonnita Fast, Angie and Warren Wallgren and Pam and Andrew Ballantyne.

Marilyn loved her grandchildren and called them her treasures. They are Justin (Monika) and Marissa Wallgren, Brittin McKean, Anishia (Jared) Ballantyne and David Doner-Fast.

Marilyn’s big sister, Helen, predeceased her.

Whether she was cooking, gardening, landscaping, painting or decorating, it was always created with passion, beauty and giving in mind.

JONES Evelyn It is with great sadness that we announce the passing Evelyn on September 12, 2012. She was born December 8, 1938 in Windsor, Ontario and spent much of her life in Abbotsford. Evelyn loved to be with her family and friends.

Was born May 14, 1912 on the Epp homestead, the first daughter after four sons for her pioneer parents Jacob and Anna Epp of the Eigenheim district of Rosthern Sk. Helen and her siblings were the first generation born in Canada.

Helen attended the Eigenheim school for an education of about grade 8 as was common in those days. Her family attended the Eigenheim Mennonite church and this is where she married Herman Neudorf in August of 1935.

They lived mostly in the Rosthern area where their three children were born.

Later they moved to BC in the fall of 1947 and then experienced the flood of 1948 in the Greendale area. Leaving farming behind they moved to Abbotsford, found livihood and attended the Alliance church.

Her final three years were spent at Hallmark on the Park and here Helen celebrated her 100th birthday with two great parties but three days later she fell and was hospitalized.

She died in Worthington Pavilion on September 8, 2012.

Helen was predeceased by her parents, all her seven siblings; Emil, George, Bill, Arthur and Jake; sisters Anne Elias and Dora Adrian; her husband Herman and all his siblings and their spouses.

She is survived by children Marlene (Elmer) Vigh of Chilliwack, Vander (Pat) of Sicamous, Wayne (Lynn) of Kamloops, six grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, and four great, great grandchildren, sister-in-law Lillian Epp, nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Friday September 14 at the SevenOaks Alliance church, preceded by a graveside service at Hazelwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the Alliance church Missions project.

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Thomas Vernon (Verne) Steele who passed away peacefully in the Vernon Jubilee Hospital on September 7th, 2012 with his loving family by his side.

With grieving hearts we let him go to be with his Lord, finally free of pain.

Verne will be lovingly remembered by his devoted wife; Laura to whom he was married for 35 years, his sons; Tom (Sue) and Greg, his daughter; Teri, their mother; Jinty Steele, 5 grandchildren; Lauren, Kristie, Cody, and Carli who are all attending post secondary institutions and thirteen year old Caleb, his sister; Phyllis (Gerald) Raboch, his nephew; Alex (Joan) Daye, his niece; Verna (Brian) Gordey along with extended family members and friends. Verne was preceded in death by his parents; George and Hilda Steele and by his oldest sister, Kay Daye.

Verne was born in the Prince George Hospital on September 19th, 1939 and lived in Vanderhoof, BC until he was eight years old at which time the family moved to Kaslo, BC where they spent two years before moving to Enderby, BC where he graduated from A.L. Fortune High School. He took his post secondary education at S.A.I.T. in Calgary, Alberta and then moved to Princeton to work.

Verne was a good athlete and enjoyed baseball, hockey and curling. He became a very good shot with a rifle and first hunted with his parents and then with his friends. Verne was a kind, loving man with a very sharp mind and had a great sense of humor. When Verne was twenty-eight and a half years old he received a spinal cord injury while playing hockey and has spent the rest of his life as a quadriplegic.

He has still remained an avid hockey fan.

Before he was confined to a bed, Laura used to drive them on short vacations to the coast and to other places in the interior. They enjoyed each other and had a great relationship. They both always said, “we� did or “we� fixed this, “we� planted the garden today. “We cooked� which always meant that Verne watched a cooking show on TV and when Laura came home from work she would cook and he would tell her from memory, word for word how to make the dish that he had just watched being made.

Cremation preceded a Celebration of Verne’s life which will be held at Grace Bible Church (5661 Silver Star Road, Vernon, BC) on Saturday, September 22nd, 2012 at 1:30 P.M. with Pastor Larry Woelke officiating.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Chai, Dr. Yacyshyn and the wonderful ICU nursing staff for their care and love shown to Verne and his family. A special thank you to Dr. Lemiski for going above and beyond the call of duty for all of the house calls and support for so many years. It is very much appreciated.
