hile the rest of the Lower Mainland has experienced unprecedented population growth and development over the past 15 years, Tsawwassen has barely budged.

That could soon change, however, as Tsawwassen First Nation (TFN) is set to exercise a land use plan that will see the creation of more than 1,500 single-detached homes and townhouses, and 280 apartment units built on 99-year leaseholds over the next decade.

The development also includes a school and 1.8-million square foot mega-mall.

“The ocean-side property is one of the most beautiful undeveloped sites in Metro Vancouver,” said Kevin Hoffman, vice president of Aquilini Development & Construction, adding the Aquilinis are planning several phases of development, the first being 19 detached homes. “The thing that really attracted us to this opportunity is the scale of opportunity and the location.”

Hoffman added that as a result Tsawwassen’s population could grow by 25 per cent once the entire residential project is completed. And with 662 hectares of treaty land, there could be more people living on TFN lands than in Tsawwassen several decades from now.

According to BC Statistics, Tsawwassen’s current population of around 21,000 represents a loss of 1,000 since 1996. Popular belief from the pro-development segment is

Coal port equipment catches fire

One of Westshore Terminals' newest stacker-reclaimer machines caught fire last Friday afternoon (Sept. 7), resulting in minor damage but no injuries.

The stacker-reclaimer is one of Westshore's four huge machines that stacks coal onto piles and then reclaims it from those piles for loading onto ships.

Westshore spokesman Ray Dykes said one of the rubber rollers on the machine spontaneously caught fire, an unusual event because it had been hours after it had stopped being used.

The machine parts are now being replaced to prevent a similar accident.

Dykes said he was pleased nobody was injured in the fire and thanked Delta Fire and Emergency Services for its quick response. Fire damage was minimal, but Dykes estimated it would take about five days to finish repairs, bringing the machine back online by Tuesday (Sept. 11).

Meanwhile, running on the remaining three stackerreclaimers wasn't expected to cause much in the way of delays for Westshore. The damaged machine, estimated to cost about $25 million brand-new, had been operating for about two years.

New TFN chief emphasizes culture

When word got out on election night that a 23-year-old member of the Tsawwassen First Nation had unseated long-time Chief Kim Baird, the reaction was largely shock.

Chief-elect Br yce Williams acknowledges his youthful success with a hearty laugh.

"I guess it doesn't happen that often around too many other reserves or treaty nations," he said Friday morning (Sept. 7) in his first post-election interview. "But I know it's a big, significant change and I'm ready to step up my role as leader."

Williams won by a narrow margin, earning 78 votes to Baird's 69. In total, 260 people were eligible to vote from the community's population of 439—a voter participation rate of 57 per cent.

"I had a feeling it was going to be close, and obviously at the time of the election I was pretty surprised to finally see the results," said the new chief, adding it was a personal decision to run and, despite his youth, he has gained valuable experience from sitting on TFN's executive council for the past three years.

Williams said he was also involved in working on the landmark Tsaw-

As gardeners in South Delta prepare to harvest the fruits of their labour, some are finding thieves have gotten there first.

Kristen Crouch wrote recently on her Ladner Community Garden blog that there have been reports of vegetable thefts over the last few weeks.

She pointed out that just as news surfaced in Richmond last week about an agricultural theft of 5,000 pounds of potatoes, and another theft from the Terra Nova Sharing Farm, now people are plucking veggies from Ladner as well.

"It's only a matter of time before we get a photo of this person, but for now I hope they are enjoying the fruits of our labour," she wrote on her blog.

The Ladner Community Garden has 46 allotment beds, making there plenty to choose from. But Crouch says she's surprised because nothing was taken last year.

Some of the more difficult-toremove vegetables, like cabbages, had to have required gardening tools, so Crouch speculates the theft is more than just a crime of opportunity.

It's not so bad knowing the food is being eaten, but she says gardeners get upset when vegetables are uprooted and left to rot.

More disappointing still, Crouch says when she went to harvest beans for the food bank they were almost all gone. Fortunately, one gardner donated 16 pounds of beets, a zucchini and some carrots.

But Crouch hopes the thefts won't cause a shortfall of the regular donations made to the food bank.

The thefts have even caused one neophyte gardener to consider giving up.

Helping hand Tsawwassen mother and daughter want to teach Caribbean children how to succeed

he French-speaking children of the SugarKids Educational School in the Dominican Republic call Deborah Conabree "debrouillard."

It means someone who is adaptable to any situation, or someone who can make something out of nothing.

That fits the description for Tsawwassen resident Deborah perfectly, as the artist and aid worker has been trying to teach children life lessons that will help them become self-sufficient and prosperous on the Caribbean island.

"We bought them one shovel and it changed the whole world," she says. "It really doesn't Adrian take much to MacNair help."

Deborah was walking along the road one day and saw a dried-up cherry tomato plant dying of thirst in front of a house.

"It's so fertile that things will grow right on the side of the road," she explains.

After getting permission from the owner to dig it up, she placed it in a rice bag and brought it to the school and planted it. Following her example, children from the school took the shovel and found some more tomato plants and brought them to the school.

They now have a thriving garden which includes a banana and passion fruit tree.

"I'm really trying to teach them that food is worth more than money," says Deborah, adding the Dominican Republic has all the soil, sun, and rain it needs, but the people don't realize they can grow all the food they need.

In the Dominican Republic, a person

can trade tomatoes for a ride on a motorcycle. And that's important, since a lack of public transportation keeps some kids from attending school.

In fact, Deborah says many of the adults who have their kids in school just sign permission slips with an "X" because they're illiterate. She's hoping donations will allow her to buy solar panels so they can run an adult education class in the evenings. Electricity is unreliable, so when the sun goes down at 6 p.m., school's out.

She estimates just one out of the 60 students at the school will go on to university. And though the community will usually rally around that one star, Deborah is concerned about what will happen to the other 59.

It costs $250 a month to the pay the rent and four teacher salaries to run the SugarKids school. Many of the students are Haitian refugees who fled their country following the devastating 2010 earthquake.

Deborah was teaching English in the Dominican Republic in 2009 when she first heard about the good things the school was doing. Since then, she has made regular trips to the country to help ensure it stays open.

Last year she brought down two suitcases of gleaners fruit, which lasted from Jan. 15 to mid-May and it cost just $40 in luggage fees.

Deborah says the school was recently donated a 30-by-eight-foot plot of land that can be used to expand the garden.

She's now organizing a secular mission to head down next Easter and do more gardening. She hopes by that time she'll be able to bring an ultra-violet water filter for purification.

Firefighter breaks world record Jamie McGarva carves nearly two seconds off the best time at National Scott FireFit competition in Quebec adrian MacNair reporter

Delta's fire department can now boast the top firefighter in Canada.

Jamie McGarva, 38, from Surrey, shattered a world record while finishing first out of 134 firefighters competing at the National Scott FireFit Championships in BaieComeau, Que. on Sept. 1 and 2.

McGar va's time of 1:13.53 knocked more than two seconds off the previous record of 1:15.9.

He finished second to Kamloops firefighter Graham MacKenzie last year, who was fourth this time around.

Teammate Ryan Rickards, 36, from Langley, who finished in 27th place, said it's in McGarva's nature to be the best at whatever he does.

"His wife was telling me a story that his neighbour redid their lawn, so

Jamie went out the next day and redid his lawn and garden," said Rickards. "Because he has to have the nicest lawn in the neighbourhood. He's that guy."

Rickards said that four years ago McGarva was running a middle-ofthe-road time of 1:35 and decided to really dedicate himself to training harder and dieting like an athlete. That hard work has paid off.

"He was back in the gym at 6 a.m. yesterday morning," said Rickards. "And he probably worked out again last night."

The team finished second out of 26 teams in Canada, behind perennial powerhouse Kamloops, who are the four-time National champions and two-time World champions.

"Across Canada, a small little department like us, that's great," said Rickards.

It's their third annual Corn and Potato Fundraiser. Selling from their popular roadside stand on Arthur Dr. near historic Kirkland House, the Guichons want to thank the community for supporting their business and in turn raise money for the hospital in memory of their late grandmother, Lorraine Guichon.

Last year, the event raised just under $3,500 with 100 per cent off the proceeds being donated from the one-day sale.

As with past years, the sale features new potatoes and purchase of corn that

will be doubled at no extra charge.

What would someone do with an abundance of corn?

'Pickle-Dilly' Potato Salad INGREDIENTS 3 lbs. new potatoes 3 hard-boiled eggs, peeled and chopped 8 dill pickle spears, coarsely chopped 3 celery stalks, chopped 1 small, red onion, chopped 4 radishes, chopped

2/3 cup mayonnaise 2 tbsp. Dijon mustard 2 tbsp. apple cider vinegar 2 tbsp. minced, fresh dill salt and pepper to taste

DIRECTIONS Cook potatoes in a large pot of boiling, salted water until fork tender— about 30 minutes.

Drain and cool.

Then cut into chunks and transfer to

a large bowl.

Stir in pickles, celery, onion, radishes, eggs. mayo, mustard, vinegar and dill.

Season to taste with salt and pepper.

Serves eight.

Tsawwassen Lawn Bowling Club is located next to a seniors' complex and it is mostly being used by seniors, so one would think they would have some consideration and understanding for seniors.

In the mornings the "lawnchomper" starts up just after 7 a.m., and with its grunting, grinding and moaning it whines its way across the lawn oblivious that it awakens and disturbs the senior tenants who face this green in the apartment complexes.

Consideration to the needs of the seniors who live in the apartments who have to face this disturbance

from this grinding monster in the early morning hours seem unimportant especially when there is a bylaw that allows this type of abuse.

It's time that the mayor and council revisit the bylaw and amend it so these senior people can have that sleep they deserve, the respect they deserve and the peace of mind that the alarm of the beginning of the day isn?t that moaning, grinding, groaning of this alarm clock known as the "lawnchomper."

I know for a fact that Alberta wants to do this because I worked on a project in East Edmonton (a stone’s throw from the refineries in Fort Saskatchewan) that would have seen it become a reality.

And as long as Enbridge meets the conditions and standards set out by the premier, moving heavy oil from Alberta through a pipeline would be a heck of a lot better than shipping it by rail or truck.

That’s why B.C. should be working with Alberta on exactly the kind of

joint interprovincial venture David Black is proposing, a venture that would bring value-added tertiary oil refining to B.C. along with the heavy oil pipeline.

Shipping gasoline, jet fuel and other refined oil products by tanker is just as practical as shipping crude oil and lot safer from an environmental standpoint.

So let’s not waste this opportunity and the revenue and jobs it could bring to our province.

There’s a lot we could do here in B.C. with a piece of the oil industry pie.

“It has to be the right development in the right place at the right time and for the right reason,” she said.

Jackson has seen Delta before and after the implementation of the ALR in 1972 and said it should stay. When some people don’t want to farm anymore, they can sell the land to another person who does.

“Because that land is valuable and the land will be here forever,” she said.

TFN’s development follows guidelines set out by the Metro Vancouver Regional Growth Strategy, and aims to meet objectives like protecting green areas, preserving land in the ALR, and achieving a compact metropolitan region to reduce commute times and generate jobs.

Oppal said he’s sympathetic to the difficulties facing Delta’s current council, and ultimately it’s the community that has to take ownership of the issue.

And although Oppal said it’s good to cherish farmland, all of South Delta is built on fertile farmland.

S

huffling forward in near-pitch darkness, Aly Devji can’t tell if the shapes around him are actually real or only part of his imagination.

The hallucinations have muddled his thoughts, and he struggles to understand what he’s doing.

The world around him swirls by in slow motion.

Devji doesn’t even remember where he is. In fact, he has forgotten everything except for taking next step.

The memories of climbing 5,895 metres above sea level to the peak of Africa’s Mount Kilimanjaro are now three years old, but the feelings he experienced remain raw.

“At least we could climb the mountain and we could climb back down,” Devji says. “But for families with Alzheimer’s, they’re constantly on that mountain.”

Devji is an assistant administrator at Delta View Habilitation Centre, a residential care facility for people with various forms of dementia, including Alzheimer’s Disease (AD).

There is no cure for AD, it can only be slowed down with treatment. Eventually, the nerves in the brain are damaged to the point where the victim of this treacherous disease loses all sense of reality.

It’s that disorienting experience Devji compares to climbing a high altitude peak and a reason why he and his mother, Jane Devji, who founded Delta View, made the ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro in 2009 to raise money for Alzheimer’s research.

“That is the journey, times 100, that the resident and the family faces,” he says.

raising money and awareness Mike and Jennifer Terrell, a Tsawwassen couple married for 28 years, will make that same ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro from Sept. 24 to 30 to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Society of BC (ASBC).

Jennifer became involved with AD after a close relative in Ontario was diagnosed three years ago. It was a surprise to learn the news.

“It’s such a slow and insidious kind of progression that the caregiver doesn’t even notice,” says Jennifer.

At first she tried to deal with it on her own, but heard about an AD meeting at the Ladner Library, which introduced her to a support network. That gave her the chance to speak to others who have loved ones living with AD. It’s made her realize she’s not alone.

“You feel helpless and you want to do something for a person you’re seeing slowly disappear,” says Mike, a lawyer who has spent years in Africa working on mining exploration.

The Kilimanjaro ascent gives them a chance to feel like they’re doing something, not only to raise money for research, but awareness about a terrible disease.

The team is comprised of people from all walks of life, young and old, swimmers, cyclists, and hikers. In fact, there’s an 84 and 85-year-old couple who have been married for more than 60 years. If they reach the summit it will be an achievement for the Guinness Book of World Records.

Sandy Riley, 66, is a past president of the ASBC who made the climb herself in 1999. She has been responsible for organizing the team and getting them motivated.

She first became aware of AD 25 years ago in the United Kingdom when her mother was diagnosed.

“I just felt that I couldn’t help my mom as much as I wanted to on the journey, so maybe I could do something over here,” she says.

Sandy says many people have misconceptions that Alzheimer’s is simply a sign of old age, when it’s actually a disease. She says there’s still a social stigma of talking about dementia because people don’t want the outside world to know a person they love most is slowly losing their mind.

“Twenty years ago when somebody was getting violent or angry, the real reason was they were so frustrated because they couldn’t explain what was going on,” she says. “I specifically remember one lady telling me her father was carried away in a strait jacket.”

Fortunately, attitudes have changed substantially since then so people can talk openly about dementia and understand and empathize with not only those who have AD, but those families suffering through it.

“They say dementia robs the resident, the patient, the person of relationships, of memories, of all those things,” says Aly Devji. “But it robs the families of those same things.”

S

huffling forward in near-pitch darkness, Aly Devji can’t tell if the shapes around him are actually real or only part of his imagination.

The hallucinations have muddled his thoughts, and he struggles to understand what he’s doing.

The world around him swirls by in slow motion.

Devji doesn’t even remember where he is. In fact, he has forgotten everything except for taking next step.

The memories of climbing 5,895 metres above sea level to the peak of Africa’s Mount Kilimanjaro are now three years old, but the feelings he experienced remain raw.

“At least we could climb the mountain and we could climb back down,” Devji says. “But for families with Alzheimer’s, they’re constantly on that mountain.”

Devji is an assistant administrator at Delta View Habilitation Centre, a residential care facility for people with various forms of dementia, including Alzheimer’s Disease (AD).

There is no cure for AD, it can only be slowed down with treatment. Eventually, the nerves in the brain are damaged to the point where the victim of this treacherous disease loses all sense of reality.

It’s that disorienting experience Devji compares to climbing a high altitude peak and a reason why he and his mother, Jane Devji, who founded Delta View, made the ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro in 2009 to raise money for Alzheimer’s research.

“That is the journey, times 100, that the resident and the family faces,” he says.

raising money and awareness Mike and Jennifer Terrell, a Tsawwassen couple married for 28 years, will make that same ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro from Sept. 24 to 30 to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Society of BC (ASBC).

Jennifer became involved with AD after a close relative in Ontario was diagnosed three years ago. It was a surprise to learn the news.

“It’s such a slow and insidious kind of progression that the caregiver doesn’t even notice,” says Jennifer.

At first she tried to deal with it on her own, but heard about an AD meeting at the Ladner Library, which introduced her to a support network. That gave her the chance to speak to others who have loved ones living with AD. It’s made her realize she’s not alone.

“You feel helpless and you want to do something for a person you’re seeing slowly disappear,” says Mike, a lawyer who has spent years in Africa working on mining exploration.

The Kilimanjaro ascent gives them a chance to feel like they’re doing something, not only to raise money for research, but awareness about a terrible disease.
