Thapar’s tires slashed in Rona parking lot AUTUMN MacDONALD Observer Reporter City Coun. Sushil Thapar’s says his tires were knifed Wednesday morning at Rona.

“I went into the store around 10 a.m.” he said.

“Within a few minutes a Rona employee came into the store saying a vehicle had been knifed.”

Thapar heard the description of the vehicle, went outside and confirmed it was his – “knife” marks were noted in both passenger tires.

The RCMP were then called.

“This is a low blow,” he said, insisting the tire slashing and his relationship with fellow elected officials and their supporters are connected.

“I have been threatened by council supporters and now they are trying to bully me, but I am not going to be scared away.”

As the incident is under police investigation the city offered no comment.

Quesnel male airlifted to Vancouver after crash Shortley after 4 p.m., Aug. 31, Quesnel RCMP were called to the scene of a single vehicle crash on Highway 26 just east of Barlow Creek Fire Department. Investigation determined the vehicle was travelling eastbound on Highway 26 when it lost control and went offroad right. Police believe a sudden hail storm may have been a contributing factor in the collision. The 28-year-old male driver sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to Vancouver General Hospital where he was listed in stable condition.

quatic invasive species are much like a chemical stressor such as an oil spill.

Once they spread they are extremely expensive to eradicate and leave a devastating path of destruction along the way. Canada is vulnerable to marine invaders as a result of abundant freshwater resources and extensive coastline. The problem with aquatic invasive species is that they have the ability to spread drastically, leaving native habitat inhospitable.

Some of the most prolific invasive aquatic species that are causing havoc throughout North America are Zebra/Quagga Mussels, Rock Snot, and the Water Hyacinth. Currently, these species are not found within the Cariboo Regional District and by taking precautionary measures and learning about these species, perhaps we will be able to keep them out of our waterways. If you are boating, swimming, fishing or participating in other recreational water activities, it is important to ensure you are not bringing back unwanted species and introducing them to the Cariboo Chilcotin.

The best control for aquatic invaders is prevention. Here are some tips to remember when you are out enjoying water recreation in your community: • Remember to check fishing equipment, hip and chest waders, boats and other water recreation equipment before leaving any water source.

• It is important to properly clean, drain and dry boats, as well as other water equipment, before entering another water system.

• Do not dump your aquarium plants or fish into a pond or lake.

• Be sure to do research before purchasing an ornamental aquatic for your water garden.

Executor and estate settlement seminar slated for Sept. 19

Provincial job growth up, Cariboo job growth down

Most executors, when asked if they would ever take that task on again, answer with a resounding “No.” Although honoured when first appointed executor, many quickly realize they lack the legal know-how to properly administer an estate when called upon.

Most Canadians are either named as executor in a will or have a will of their own in which they’ve named an executor. As executor, certain duties must be performed within a certain time frame and in a specific order.

Vehicle ownership must be transferred, terminal tax returns filed, taxes paid (including the possibility of capital gains tax), property transferred, accounts closed and accurate records kept.

The average estate in Canada takes 18 months to settle. Even a little planning by the testator (writer of the will) now can make a big difference to the executor later when called upon.

In order to dispel some of the mystery and confusion about this issue, Clayton’s Funeral Directors present Executors and Estate Settlement Seminar, Sept. 19, 7 – 8 p.m. in the Legion Hall.

Provincially, during August of this year, 2,322,600 people were working in British Columbia.

This number is up from 2,307,700 positions in July and an increase of 51,700 jobs compared with August 2011.

B.C. gained 14,900 jobs in August and part-time employment increased by 18,600, more than offsetting the decline of 3,700 in full-time positions.

Last month, strong gains were recorded in transportation and warehousing (+12,900 jobs), public administration (+9,900) and accommodation and food services (+3,700) industries.

B.C.’s unemployment rate dropped to 6.7 per cent as a result of higher part-time employment, positioning this province below the national average (7.3 per cent) and the fourth-lowest across Canada.

Since September 2011, B.C. has added 23,900 jobs, with full-time positions increasing by 32,800, more than offsetting the decline in part-time positions of 8,900.

Since February 2011, B.C. has added 61,700 jobs, stemming from the gain of 75,100 full-time positions and offset by a loss of 13,300 part-time positions.

Overall, B.C.’s labour force increased by 8,200 people in August and now stands at 2,488,300. Compared with one year ago, B.C.’s labour force has increased by 34,600 people.

Regionally, the Lower Mainland-Southwest gained 4,600 positions, the Thompson-Okanagan gained 1,900 positions and the Cariboo gained 1,300 positions.

“B.C. ranks first nationally in terms of job growth since August 2011 showing the province’s strong and stable growth across a variety of sectors,” Minister of Jobs, Tourism and Skills Training, Pat Bell said.

“Since the February 2011 launch of ‘The BC Jobs Plan’, our job creation numbers show an overall gain of 61,700 jobs.”

Listening to You, Speaking out for the Cariboo

Council examines accessibility C

ity Council often fields requests and hears the concerns of a wide range of organizations, interest groups and community advocates.

At this week’s council meeting, we heard from two passionate, dedicated and motivating community representatives.

Lynn Turner and Alison Duddy, who are both in wheelchairs, came to council to raise awareness about accessible parking.

I was happy to hear that as a city we’re moving in the right direction with regards to accessibility improvements.

For example, we’ve done some work with line painting to make the stalls a bit wider and to allow a greater buffer zone between vehicles. We’re trying to improve our curb-cuts and we strive to consider accessibility to a greater degree when we’re planning capital improvement projects.

MAYOR’S MESSAGE But of course we aren’t perfect and we know we have more improvements to make, such as enhanced signage, enforcement and community awareness.

And that’s what this column is all about awareness.

I was shocked to hear Lynn and Alison’s stories about people who abuse the handicapped parking system. I was even more amazed that when these two women have reminded people who are parking inappropriately that they are breaking the rules, the offenders are often rude in return.

As Lynn and Alison joked with us, “they’re not in it for the parking.�

The sad reality is that when people with disabilities can’t find appropriate parking, they are often forced to simply go home, which creates a situation in which their own community is excluding them. This can’t happen.

Or, the alternative, they are forced to park in a regular stall, which creates significant risk as they navigate on roadways and behind other parked vehicles to reach a sidewalk.

As a result of the presentation, Council will proclaim October as Accessible Parking Awareness Month.

We’re going to work with Lynn and Alison to further promote awareness and investigate other ways we can make accessible parking available for those who truly need it.

The next time you’re out and you consider parking in

a designated spot because you’ll “only be a couple of minutes,� think again.

That couple of minutes could expose a person living with a disability to inconvenience, exclusion, serious injury or even death.

And if you notice a person parking in a spot when they don’t have a proper placard, perhaps you could gently remind them that spot is reserved for people who need it.

We can all do a little bit more to improve accessible parking.

As a strong and vibrant community, we have a responsibility to be inclusive, to be accessible and to provide a productive and safe living environment for all of our residents.

MLA Musings

A Shout Out to Our Volunteer Community Over the past eight years I’ve had the privilege of meeting and working with many amazing community minded people throughout the Cariboo.

These are individuals who, for a variety of reasons, have taken up a particular cause or have such a strong passion for their community that they dedicate untold hours of their time to volunteer work.

These are the people who make our festivals and fairs happen, like the members of the Billy Barker Days Society and the Williams Lake Stampede organizing committee. People who keep our museums and art galleries open and provide our communities with opportunities to enjoy live theatre and multi-day events like ArtsWells and Horsey’s Arts on the Fly. Individuals like Audrey McLeese in Williams Lake, Carol Weremy in Quesnel, and Susan McNeil (who works in both communities) keep reminding us of our obligations to our seniors, while volunteers at the Child Development Centres and Big Brothers Big Sisters provide support and advocate for more resources for the other end of the age spectrum.

We have very active chapters of the Canadian Cancer Society and Kidney Foundation in both Williams Lake and Quesnel whose volunteers provide multiple opportunities for us to gather together to raise money for these causes. Likewise, there are support groups for a host of other diseases and life challenges that are organized and maintained purely through volunteer efforts.

We’re also fortunate to have a wide variety of service groups and foundations that work hard to improve the overall socio-economic climate of our communities. While organizations like the Cariboo Chilcotin Conservation Society, Baker Creek Enhancement Society, and Council of Canadians focus their volunteer time and energy on sustainability and environmental projects and initiatives.

New proposed pipeline to feed LNG exports TOM FLETCHER Black Press Two months after opening its newest natural gas processing plant near Dawson Creek, Spectra Energy has announced a partnership that will more than double its B.C. capacity with a large-scale pipeline to Prince Rupert.

Texas-based Spectra and British Gas (BG) Group plc announced Monday a development agreement to construct an 850km large-diameter pipeline connecting its hub of operations near Fort St. John with proposed liquefied natural gas facilities near Prince Rupert.

The pipeline would connect vast shale gas resources in the Montney formation near Fort St. John and the Liard, Horn River and Cordova Embayment shales near Fort Nelson.

Its capacity of 4.2 million cubic feet per day compares to Spectra’s existing gas handling capacity of 2.4 million cubic feet per day.

BG Group has optioned an 80-hectare site in the Ridley industrial area owned by the Prince Rupert Port Authority for a possible liquefied natural gas (LNG) export facility. Operating gas production facilities in 20 countries, BG is currently building a new LNG plant in Australia.

The joint announcement, the companies said “early conceptual routes� have been developed, with consultation planned for affected routes.

The project timeline is to begin construction by 2015 and complete the pipeline by 2020.

It still operates that plant and pipeline network that supplies natural gas to the B.C. Lower Mainland.

Premier Christy Clark and Energy Minister Rich Coleman attended opening ceremonies in July for Spectra’s new Dawson Processing Plant. Doug Bloom, president of Spectra Energy Transmission West, said at that time the company was near completion of its $1.5 billion B.C. investment program, with another $4-6 billion to be invested after 2015.

et’s get this straight. The Liberal government, under Gordon Campbell, introduced the carbon tax.

Okay, we’ve established that the Liberals introduced the tax. That’s why a press release from Environment Minister Terry Lake seems just a little incredulous and shows how incredibly twisted logic can become when politicking.

“The NDP has shown once again that they don’t understand British Columbia’s competitive economy and that their policies will kill jobs in the province,” reads the first line of the press release.

Okay, that’s a standard issue line that all Liberal cabinet ministers are indoctrinated to repeat 1,000 times every week.

Lake, however, was responding to a comment NDP environment critic Rob Fleming made about the carbon tax. Fleming said the Liberals should “fix” the tax by using it to fund transportation projects.

“Raising taxes on business will only kill jobs in B.C.,” Fleming said, seemingly oblivious to the fact the Liberals have just increased the carbon tax.

And that’s just the start. Here’s where it really gets convoluted.

According to Lake, “the carbon tax has returned $500 million more to taxpayers than it has raised in revenue.”

Have you seen any of that money?

Lake’s figures just don’t make sense.

He says the carbon tax has returned $500 million more to taxpayers than it has generated in revenue. That’s an ambiguous statement. It seems to suggest that the Liberals have returned $500 million more to British Columbians, through lower taxes, than has been generated by the carbon tax, which means they had to take that $500 million from somewhere else in the budget. Revenueneutral? Hmmm?

So, let’s recap. NDP taxes bad because they kill jobs. Liberal taxes good because they tax us only to give it all back in tax breaks, which, in turn, creates jobs, reduces our carbon footprint and save kittens stranded in trees.

orty years ago I saw a side of my grandmother I’d never seen before when my younger brother and I were invited to spend a day with her at work.

I was five at the time and she was nearly 10 times my age.

I hadn’t imagined that she had a real job beyond simply being our grandmother, but she did.

She was the beloved grade one teacher to a room full of children who called her Mrs. White rather than Gammy, as my brother and I did.

I remember at one point during that day looking over at Jeremie who was watching her play the piano, leading her class in a fun Disney classic.

He looked exactly how I felt: in awe and in love.

Fast forward four decades and that’s how we’re still looking at her.

“Is Gammy going to zipline?” my nine-year-old daughter asked earlier this year, when my dad treated us all to a day at Grouse Mountain to celebrate his 65th birthday.

On A Brighter Note “Probably,” my 20-yearold cousin replied.

“She was just quading at Jaime and Jennifer’s wedding.”

The thought of my little ladylike grandmother riding around on a muddy all-terrain vehicle at my other cousin’s wedding was surprising at first and then I thought of her motive: to make her family smile.

As our large group got suited up in harnesses and helmets I asked my nervouslooking grandmother how she was feeling.

“I’ll be okay,” she laughed.

“If the little ones can do it, I can do it too.”

And do it she did.

It was a thrilling day for many reasons and my grandmother’s act of courage made the festivities

and taking charge of her destiny is one of the many valuable examples she set for me and I thank her for that as often as I can.

“I could have done things better,” she will always say when receiving any kind of praise.

“If I knew then what I know now, I would have done things better.”

Of course she would have. We all would. But she was always brave in the moment, and she always did her best.

No longer 10 times my age, Gammy turned 89 this week.

Less than twice my age now, it feels like she’s getting younger as I’m getting older and we’re eventually going to meet somewhere in the middle and be the best of friends.

In actuality, we reached that point years ago.

And I, along with the rest of my family, remain in aweπ and in love.

even more memorable.

The amazing vision of her zipping down the mountain was only a small example of the bravery she’s displayed most of her life.

Suddenly faced with raising two young sons all by herself, she had to be strong, even if she didn’t always feel it.

“Is Gammy your hero, Mom?” my 12-year-old son asked recently.

“Yes, ” I said.

“She’s endured a lot of pain in her life, but she’s never let it get the best of her.

“She’s risen to every challenge and has decidedly come out stronger than she was before.”

I used to think that I learned how to be an optimist from my father, but I now know that I also learned it from my grandmother.

Despite her grave concerns for the state of modern civilization and her habit of worrying about others, I have only ever seen her full of hope and gratitude for her life and the lives of her loved ones.

Falling into Autumn T

he falling leaves are beginning to swirl and dance around our feet very early this year.

It seems such a short time ago we eagerly watched them unfold, revealing new growth, a most welcome symbol of spring.

Then, with a firm nudge from the warm sun and much coaxing summer finally arrived.

What a wonderful golden season it is to enjoy. It has the knack of mellowing us out, teaching us to touch base with what is important. Life takes on a more casual turn, of flip flops and shorts, having friends over for barbeques or just sitting and visiting and talking far into the night.

These are the moments we wait for all year long, to savour the richness of life and perhaps the abundant crop that we have harvested from our own garden.

In moments the last hurrah will sound and the curtain call will close the season far too soon for most of us.

We want it to last as long as possible and so, the early fall provides an additional extra few weeks to play it forward a bit longer. Perhaps the words of the poet say it best; Time you old gypsy man will you not stay, put up your caravan just for one day!

For many families the children are back in school for another year. There’s a lot of buzz and excitement shopping for school supplies and perhaps a new outfit or two. Others are very busy getting their winter wood organized, split and piled, ready for the cool days that are just around the corner.

For those of us who enjoy cooking and preserving food, this is a most pleasant time. In the kitchen the pungent smell of bread and butter or beet pickles being packed into hot sterilized jars fills the air. Jams and jellies and maybe marmalade, bursting with flavor, ladled into pretty

jars and put on the shelf. What a treat to occasionally enjoy them on toast on a cold winter morning.

Not to be overlooked are the wonderful Okanagan peaches and pears preserved to enjoy in the winter months ahead.

Everything will taste so good when we open a jar later in the season and will remind us that yes there was a summer this year!

Perhaps we will be able to share our bounty with friends too.

When gardens and vegetables are mentioned, it goes without saying that if you or your friends grew any zucchini by now they or you will be trying to give them away by the armful. Sometimes they have become huge, but you politely accept them and ponder on what in the world to do with them.

Actually they are a very versatile vegetable and can be used in many ways to make tasty dishes.

One favorite is adding grated zucchini to scrambled eggs, frying the zucchini a bit first and then whisking them into your eggs.

This combination tastes very much like egg foo yung.

Another interesting combination is adding cubed zucchini to a mixture of peppers, onion and tomatoes and then sautéed in oil or butter, along with oregano or basil, salt and pepper. This is a very nice side, served with meat loaf. Grated zucchini is also added to chocolate Bundt cake, spaghetti sauce, or zucchini relish to mention a few.

However, a word of caution in revealing what this interesting flavor is if your family does not appreciate zucchini, they may not eat what you prepared!

Yes, the last days of summer are precious and few and packed full of all the good things the earth has produced for us to enjoy.

And you know, in spite of whether we like it or not, that even includes zucchini!

he Museum was the site of a festive afternoon on Aug. 28. The Civic Pride Committee and the Museum put on a celebration of the 45th Anniversary of the Rose Garden.

Honoured guests were the original rose gardeners from 1967.

All and any who had a hand in starting the gardens were invited for the afternoon which culminated in a tea party.

Watching the presentations and participating in the tea party were the Red Hat Society girls, Friends of the Museum executive, and Mayor Mary Sjostrom. Those who attended the tea party had the pleasure of being waited on by Miss Quesnel Royalty and Museum Commissioners Peter Walsh and John Massier. The new Royalty was introduced to the behind the scenes part of volunteering as they washed and dried dishes for more than 50 people – after they finished serving. And all this with smiles on their faces.

PAST TIME 90 years (which is really on Sept. 16) by inviting his friends for a party at his place.

Tom is related to half the country and knows almost all the other half.

One of the reasons I mentioned Tom’s birthday is that he is well known at the Museum and the Legion for his fantastic recollections of Quesnel history.

Tom is also known for his labour of love in collecting and compiling stories and photos of the Wall of Fame in Quesnel Legion, Branch 94.

Tom was finally convinced to make a DVD of the stories and anecdotes of the 19 young men from Quesnel who went to war but never returned.

This wonderful piece of Quesnel history is available at the Legion for those of you interested in learning about the sacrifices this small town made for your freedom.

And once again, I stand corrected.

Fall Fair welcomes Diesel, Piper and Sydney ANNIE GALLANT Observer Reporter

I

n his family room, Rich Kolar speaks to the three dogs who occupy three large cushions on the floor.

That’s almost 350 pounds of massive canines with fearsome muscles and mammoth heads, a worrisome scene except all three are snoozing and slowly lift their heads in response to their master.

Diesel, the patriarchal top dog, is a 12-yearold Neopolitan mastiff, weighing in at 140 pounds. With blue-grey colouring and an immense head (both typical of the breed) he exudes a calmness unexpected given his giant stature.

Piper and Sydney are 110 and 105-pound Dogues de Bordeaux mastiff females with winsome eyes and reddish-brown coats.

Rich admits he’s always been a dog lover, raising various breeds throughout his life, but now he’s totally devoted to his Bordeaux dogs.

Rich plans to take the trio to the Quesnel Fall Fair, Sept. 22 – 23 where people can pet the dogs, learn about the breed and Crimson Pride Bordeaux Training and Wellness.

“I was always good at

training dogs, I always enjoyed it,” he said.

However, about 10 years ago, when his daughter challenged him to take on the aggressive, unruly Diesel, (who was facing euthanization), Rich rose to task.

“I changed his diet and over the next year, slowly trained him into a gentle giant,” Rich said.

“Now its a career.”

He knew he wanted a mastiff breed and after researching various types of mastiffs, he chose Dogues de Bordeaux.

Rich also knew he wanted to help save this particular breed which was almost pushed to extinction three times in its history. The breed also suffers from life-threatening health issues.

Dogues de Bordeaux is one of the most ancient French breed of dogs and was most suited to pulling carts or hauling heavy objects as well as guarding livestock and protecting castles of the European elite.

Known as early as the fourteenth century, they are also believed to descend from war dogs of Roman times.

At the time of the French Revolution, these dogs were almost wiped out when the aristrocracy (the only

people allowed to own these fierce protectors) were decimated. Again during the First World War, Dogues de Bordeaux were used by the French to retrieve the wounded from the front lines and many were also casualties of war. Finally, during the Second World War, again pressed into service as carters in the front lines, these dogs also were messengers. Hitler decreed these dogs were to be killed on sight.

In the 1950s and 1960s a group of breeders in France worked on rebuilding the foundation of the breed and in 2008 Dogues de Bordeaux were fully recognized by the American Kennel Club.

Breed recognition has been enhanced by the use of these dogs in movies and television. One of the most recognizable was the Tom Hanks movie, Turner and Hooch. Hooch was a Dogue de Bordeaux.

With the numbers climbing, breeders are encouraged to focus on the health of the breed.

As with most largebreed dogs, mastiffs often suffer from hip, eye and heart problems, among other health issues and these can be addressed through a comprehensive and thoughtful breeding program.

Taking on this commitment, Rich brings many other skills to the table.

He’s a certified behaviour therapist, a certified healing touch masseuse and does energy work/Reiki certified along with obedience training and grooming.

Throughout his career, Rich has trained guard/ attack dogs as well as obedience training, show training, grooming and family-friendly animals.

But since having a family of his own, he decided to concentrate on good, all-around family dogs, trained with patience, positive reinforcement and love.

Important to Rich, all his animals are Canadian Kennel Club Good Neighbour certified and are both service and therapy trained.

Diesel is also a St. John’s Ambulance therapy dog.

“It was difficult to have Diesel accepted – it took three years,” Rich said.

“But once he was in, they loved him.”

This means the gentle giant can be used in schools, nursing homes and other facilities where animal therapy is considered beneficial.

For Rich, beginning a breeding program for

his Dogues de Bordeaux meant proving the quality of his stock which, in turn, meant taking his beloved dogs into the show ring.

Together with his first dog, Bella, purchased from a Ontario breeder, Rich learned about the world of dog showing.

“Bella became a 10-time champion and was also trained as a service dog,” he said.

Unfortunately, his first Dogue de Bordeaux didn’t pass the hips test and was therefore unsuitable for the breeding program Rich was looking to establish.

“She’s now enjoying life with my daughter,” he said with a smile.

From the same breeder, Rich acquired Piper, now two. The 110-pound female is pregnant, bred to a champion male Dogue de Bordeaux.

“Piper’s in the 90 percentile for good hips and has tested well for heart and eye conditions,” he said.

Sydney, also just over two years old, is a descendant of a French International champion.

Her grandmother lived to 13 and that’s an important genetic trait. Sydney has also tested well for health issues.

Rich has also trained Piper for carting, but as she’s now pregnant he’s not sure she’ll be demonstrating that at the Fall Fair.

“We’ll have the carts there and can answer questions about that aspect of my training,” he said.

“Carting is a chance to provide a working exercise for the dogs.”

All his dogs have past temperament testing and Rich has full confidence taking them into public venues where children and parents are invited to meet Diesel, Piper and Sydney.

In addition to meeting these amazing dogs, visitors to the Fall Fair can expect to see other livestock exhibits, Fur and Feather displays, activities throughout the grounds and in the Agriplex at Alex Fraser Park and the popular arts and agricultural I-X division in West Fraser Timber Room at the Arts and Rec Centre.

And admission is free.

Krueger’s Canadian Graphite graces art gallery walls ANNIE GALLANT Observer Reporter Since the age of 5, Kevin Krueger has expressed himself through art.

Encouraged by his grandmother, who he described as artsy and a potter, Kevin received presents of arts supplies and drawing material.

“I remember wearing grandpa’s big shirts as I painted,” he said with a grin.

Krueger’s current work is the subject of this month’s Quesnel Art Gallery show at the Arts and Rec Centre, with a variety of subjects but virtually every piece is executed with pencils.

“I use many grades of pencils to achieve various tones of grey and black,” he said.

After high school, where he achieved straight As in art, Krueger stopped drawing for about 15 years.

“I missed it, but life got in the way,” he said.

A move to the South Cariboo launched the artist back into the art world and he began that journey with pen and ink.

“I went through a phase of pen and ink of old buildings, with as much detail as possible,” he said.

And that is an understatement. The detail in Krueger’s work almost defies comprehension. Every last corner of the work shows an attention to detail not often found anywhere.

“The detail drives me to the edge of obsessive/compulsive but that’s what it takes to pull the detail out,” he asserted.

When asked how he knows when a piece is finished, Krueger paused and then smiled.

“Sometimes I think I’m finished but then come back later and begin adding more detail,” he said.

“However, once I sign it, it’s finished.”

In the gallery collection it’s easy to see Krueger’s passion for vintage hotrods and other classic vehicles, which he explains comes from 35 years in the auto parts business but there are also

glimpses into other worlds, including his first foray into creating buildings. But possibly the two celebrity portraits of Liz Taylor and Marilyn Monroe demand the most explanation.

“I wanted to challenge myself,” he simply said.

Once he relocated to Quesnel, Krueger began to tie his two hobbies together, photography and art.

“The one enhances the other,” he said.

With a beautifully executed violin and a still life from Barkerville, the show is well worth a browse.

Krueger admitted capturing the chrome and reflections on ve-

hicles is still challenging his skills but the work is evidence he’s winning the battle.

This is Krueger’s first solo art show and he said it’s very different seeing your work in a gallery.

“It blew me away.”

A group of artisans from Granville Island Public Market are “paddling upstream” on the Fraser River Sept. 22, anchoring along the way in Williams Lake to be joined by local crafters.

Then continuing on, loaded down with crates and boxes full of beautiful, fine work they will arrive in Quesnel.

Local artists will welcome the arrivals at the historic Fraser River Foot Bridge and together they will set up their wonderful work inside the Helen Dixon School, downtown Quesnel next to the Farmers Market.

The Artisans are asking for a $2 admission fee to come in and see the jewelry, fashion accessories, fine arts, pottery, textile arts and home decor.

All the funds raised and the admissions collected will benefit the local Amata Transition House. The Quesnel Amata Transition House has been helping women and children for many years in our community, thanks to the wonderful staff and devoted volunteers.

B

rad Chudiak and Craig Delwisch, now less than a week away from the flight hurtling past the east coast of Canada to the old world, are in the final leg of their preparations for the Big Game in the cradle of golf — Scotland.

Having won the Western Canada International Pairs Tournament in Comox last October, the pair are now finally going on to play in the International World Final in Loch Lomond, Scotland.

As in any international tournament, the two will be wearing the maple leaf on their chest: an honour for the pair.

"The biggest thing for me is just to represent Canada," Delwisch said.

Besides the honour of the leaf, and the chance to play in the glens and by the lochs where golf was born, the adventure of the trip – the new people, new accents and new land to explore – only adds to the trip.

"What's exciting for me, as well as Brad probably, is the unknown. We're going over there with a lot of preparation and some contacts and you never know where that's going to lead and that's kind of neat. You never know who you're going to meet," Delwisch said.

The only team from Canada this year, they will be meeting golfers from all over Europe and the world.

The tournament has 32 teams coming from to Scotland to challenge the difficult course. Some countries send two teams

"We'll probably play a practice round with the team and play two rounds, probably with two different teams. And we're on there for five hours with the guys and we're fairly open and friendly, we're not there just to focus," he said.

"We're there to make friends," Delawisch added.

They also hope to exchange shirts or caps with some of their international friends-to-be.

The pair will be gone from Sept. 21 – Oct 6, 12 days in Scotland with travel on either end. While

they're there they will be updating their facebook page: Craig and Brad's Scottish Adventure.

Craig will document the trip, with updates daily or every other day. He'll be taking pictures on and off the course, along with videos and

small write-ups about where they are and who they've met.

EMPLOYMENT POSTING Finance Bookkeeper The Lhoosk’uz Dene Nation is looking to hire a qualified & responsible person for the role of Bookkeeper. This person will be responsible for maintaining the efficient and economical financial recordkeeping of the Lhoosk’uz Dene Nation (L.D.N.) Office.

The position is 35.0 hours per week, based on the following workweek schedule; Work Day: Monday – Friday 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. One hour lunch break The chosen candidate will be initially hired on a probationary 3-month term, during or after which time L.D.N. reserves the right to amend or terminate the employment.

The starting salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Specific Responsibilities • Reporting to the Band Management, this position is responsible for the day-to-day administration of the finance department. This includes maintenance of the General ledger and supervision of accounts receivable and payroll/accounts payable staff.

Managing financial reporting systems and processes by: • Utilizing AccPac for entering data into the general ledger, and monitoring the accuracy of data entered by other staff • Preparing and inputting journal entries • Preparing bank and monthly reconciliations • Preparing and reconciling financial reports as needed by Management, Council or other admin staff • Developing detailed knowledge of systems, monitoring the effectiveness of systems, and recommending to supervisor on any changes to systems • Assisting staff with understanding and using systems • Assisting departments with budget preparation and variance calculations • Analyzing financial information on a regular basis and bringing potential issues and possible solutions/options to attention of Management • Preparing WCB, CRA, Pension and Medical Coverage reports and remittances • Preparing GST reports and Refund applications on a timely basis • Issuing Records of Employment as required • Annually preparing T4’s, T4As, reconciling them to YTD summaries and CRA Remittance reports and issuing T4’s.

Ensuring financial, hiring, payroll and benefit documents are processed by: • Reviewing submitted documents for accuracy and completeness • Reviewing accounts payable, Accounts Receivable and Payroll reports and directing employees for any changes to be made.

• Approving payrolls or payments for contract work before release • Reviewing that all advances and deductions are accounted for in biweekly payroll • Reviewing that benefits are accrued and deducted • Reviewing that benefits, performance increments, and living allowance rates are paid • Reviewing data entry by clerks • Preparing required year-end reporting documents • Approving timesheets and leave requests • Ensuring compliance with WCB regulations.

Preferred Job Knowledge & Skills: • Degree or designation (or current enrolment in these programs) in one or more of the following: Accounting or Business Administration.

• Work experience through a full cycle of accounting functions in an organization • Knowledge of AANDC Funding Agreements (ARFA’s) and program areas • Knowledge of Health Canada Funding Agreements and program areas • Knowledge of payroll and benefits rules, other employee benefits and associated reporting requirements • Knowledge of GST and WCB regulations and associated reporting requirements.

• Knowledge of applicable regulations in the Canada Labor Code • Ability to prioritize and rank issues in relation to the overall goals of the VGFN. • Time management and organizational skills.

• Ability to assume responsibility and meet deadlines.

• Ability to write reports and make presentations • Ability to develop policies and procedures • Ability to forecast project costs and monitor expenditures • Ability to use email, Word and Excel, AccPac & Paymate • Ability to prepare reconciliations, financial statements and reports • Ability to communicate effectively and diplomatically, both verbally and in writing, with co-workers, Lhoosk’uz community members, and with outside agencies, partners and business associates.

The successful candidate should possess a valid B.C. Drivers and license and ownership of an insured vehicle.
