Municipal peacekeeper hired by Mayor “Blunt” BRIAN KIERAN CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
Mayor Walter Jakeway believes in common sense “bluntly expressed.” He also believes he has to start getting things done in the second year of his term. So he convinced city council to hire the consulting services of a municipal peacekeeper to help patch up relations at city hall after a year of fear and resentment. Most observers agree the atmosphere at city hall has gone from bad to worse in the past year. In an effort to introduce some harmony Jakeway sought divine intervention in the form of former Spruce Continued on A3

Jakeway takes his mortality to heart BRIAN KIERAN CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
Mayor Walter Jakeway, the changed man, wants city council to allocate $10,000 a month to the local food bank from October through January. That’s what happens when a matter of fact
technocrat suffers a near fatal heart infection, goes under the surgeon’s knife on the operating table and emerges a changed man. Jakeway, who invited a homeless First Nations man to live in his basement for four months this year, also wants the city to build
a homeless shelter and a new SPCA shelter. T h e m ayo r s ay s he came face to face with his “mortality” in 2007 when a virus attacked his heart. “I was two months from dead. I had a six and a half hour heart operation. My life changed totally,” Jakeway says. “My values changed.
Now I have a soft spot for homeless people and animals. “When I became mayor I put myself on the homeless coalition. I’m a big supporter of the Salvation Army and the Radiant Life Church that feed people every day. “When you are lying there (on the operating
table) you ask yourself what is really important in this life. Is money truly the most important thing in this world? “No, it is not. “I have been well blessed. It’s my responsibility to help people who aren’t so well blessed.” Jakeway says the
world of black and white realities now has a lot of grey in it. “People in this building think Walter only knows black and white. Walter knows grey. You’ve got to have the milk of human kindness.” The mayor believes t h e c i t y ’s a n nu a l casino revenues from
Mayor: Bureaucracy was ‘dug in’ Continued from A1 Grove (Alberta) mayor George Cuff, an internationally-respected local government consulting peacemaker who parachuted into Campbell River earlier this month to meet all the combatants and “coach us on how to get along better.” Jakeway says Cuff interviewed all elected officials and senior managers. His preliminary report states the obvious. “Council needs to let the mayor lead and the mayor needs to be more respectful of people on council and senior s t a f f, ” t h e m ayo r reports. Cuff wants city hall to find ways to get along, Jakeway says. Will the mayor do his part? Be more empathetic? “In year two you’ll see a lot more getting along. We’ve got to get some stuff done,” he says. While he insists the

“ogre” thing is just an act, he makes no apologies for “turning city hall upside down and shaking it” in his first year in the mayor’s chair. “If you are going to make change happen, you have to force it and sometimes it isn’t very nice.” “And, I have my big weakness ... I don’t respect incompetence,” he says. It is no surprise then that during the year the hefty, six foot one inch bull in a china shop has been repeatedly stonewalled by city council and cold
shouldered by senior staff. Why? Jakeway approached his mandate convinced he was fighting with “an entrenched bureaucracy.” “They were dug in ... really dug in.” He says his job was “to break them loose.” “They are very comfortable in their chairs. They don’t want anyone tinkering with them. They (management) are well paid and they have good benefits.” He says he had to apply some pressure. “I certainly got their attention.” Jakeway set the mood around city hall by declaring “there are too many people here.” The reaction, he says, was predictable ... “fear and anger.” In the plus column, Jakeway says the city is buzzing with construction activity. As his business card proclaims, there are “oceans of opportunity” here. For his part, Jakeway says

the provincial gaming branch, about $700,000, should be earmarked for social policy (“people”) initiatives such as the building of a homeless shelter and a new SPCA facility. Are these lofty social goals achievable? “If city council will agree with me,” the mayor says.

he’s learning “politics.” Public awareness of city hall issues “is huge.” City council is working more efficiently and more transparently. And, he is satisfied that voters know he’s listening to their concerns and is unafraid to speak up. But – there’s always a but – some things never change. The mayor insists that everything he’s said in the past year remains true. “There’s still too many staff. There’s still too much cost. And, the (property) tax increase did not need to happen.” If Jakeway has his way, the city will eventually be downsized by 35 staff. Can that be achieved through attrition, resignations and retirements? “No,” he says. “Attrition is weak management. That’s being a weenie.” Jakeway’s second year in office should be a walk in the park. Right?

Planning for Life Changes When is it the right time to move? When it comes to making a move from a long time family home to a much smaller residence, or assisted living, the task can be very difficult for the individual, as well and friends and family Anne Delaney When to downsize can be one of the most difficult decisions for individuals to make. It may not come down to a choice, a person may have more space than they can handle, or health issues that require a lifestyle change. With the support of a moving and downsizing specialist, the entire process can be made much easier on everyone. It is best for a person to make the decisions while they are physically and mentally able to do so. Otherwise, these important choices may have to be made for you. This transition is much more difficult if individuals wait until a crisis arises. Well-meaning friends or family members can set aside a weekend to deal with a move, but often productivity is put ahead of their loved ones needs. Planning ahead is often a much better option. Many clients have great difficulty in parting with items they will never use again, but perhaps carry special memories. Often closets, basements, and garages can be collection areas for seldom used things. This can often be a very challenging part of downsizing to much smaller living quarters. It can be surprising to realize how burdened we become by all the ‘stuff’, until we no longer have to worry about it. With the right support, it can be a very freeing experience. Items will need to be sold, recycled, trashed or donated. The process of preparing, packing, and moving out for pickup or transport can be taken care of by your relocation specialist once the decisions are made. Instead of looking at this time as an end, it should be presented as a beginning or a new adventure. It can be upsetting, but can also be very exciting. Thinking of moving? Do so while you still have a choice, not only where you want to live, but also in what items you want to take with you to your new home. Remember your memories will always be with you. Mayor wants help for freezing SPCA staff KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
Mayor Walter Jakeway wants to get SPCA workers out of the cold and into a new building. He said when the colder weather sets in, the staff ’s hands start to freeze because the aging building has a poor heating system. It’s also cramped, impractical, and too hot in the summer. “They’re extremely congested in there and they have problems with heating in the winter,” Jakeway said at a council meeting Aug. 14. “I’d like to suggest putting in a modular building so that they could move in there in the winter so staff don’t have to wear gloves.”
Kathleen Embree, manager of the Campb e l l R ive r S P C A branch, confirmed it’s “extremely cold” in the wintertime, to the point that SPCA staff ’s fingers are so frozen that they can’t type. She said the problem is the heaters tend to overload the circuit system, and present a fire hazard. “We have little portable heaters but people bump into them and we don’t want to use them because of course that’s a fire hazard,” Embree said. “There’s a radiant heater panel in the ceiling that was put in three to four years ago but the duct work that’s been added on is not functioning properly. We need a new building, it’s about 30 years old. Eventually we’d
like to get a new shelter, whether it’s city built or SPCA built.” The problem is the SPCA has not been able to raise any money for a new shelter because all the fundraising the branch does goes towards the costly upkeep of the animals. Embree said the SPCA spends about $60,000 each year in vet bills. “We’re doing what we can for the animals, that’s our primary concern,” Embree said. Enter Jakeway. The mayor would like council to provide the SPCA with a modular office space to accommodate the staff in the interim. Embree said it would be nice to have the open space. The existing building has a narrow
hallway and the staff offices offer no privacy from the front counter. “When I’m doing an interview I need confidentiality. Right now the public can hear us on the telephone,” she said. “It would help because it would open things up and there would be less computer ter minals crammed into the existing space which would make it not as hot (in the summer).” But council was hesitant to take the mayor’s suggestion. “We have an SPCA reserve fund to the tune of $2,700 in it and that’s it,” Coun. Andy Adams said. “I would suggest it’s more of a strategic decision for council.” Ja kew ay s a i d h e wanted to get moving
on it now, rather than wait for the strategic planning session sometime in October. “I brought it up now because we’re heading into winter and last winter they were wearing gloves so they could use their pens,” he said. But council wanted more information from staff on the impacts of purchasing a modular building. “A good first step would be a report on viability and costs,” Coun. Claire Moglove said. “We don’t have money in the 2012 budget for this.” In the end, council voted to have staff come back with a report on the viability and potential costs of accommodating the SPCA.

Don’t demolish old hospital, Jakeway tells VIHA KRISTEN DOUGLAS
CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
A new hospital is on the way but Mayor Walter Jakeway doesn’t want to part with the old building. “I would like them (Vancouver Island Health Authority) to consider not tearing down the old building,” Jakeway said at Tuesday’s council meeting. “I don’t believe there’s a lot wrong with the old building...but I believe there’s still a lot of value in the old building and that it gives us potential in the future to use that old building for something else.” Jakeway spied Grant Hollett, the interim project manager for the new Campbell River and Comox Valley hospitals, sitting in the council chamber gallery and asked him to pass along his message. “I know there’s representatives sitting here,” Jakeway said. “If they can convey that back, I think it would be a great asset to our town to keep certainly most of it. A lot of it’s not that old. A lot of it is under 30 years old, so it would be great to consider that in your design.”
The hospital was the topic of discussion at Tuesday’s meeting as the health authority was looking for council approval of a Variance Permit to increase the maximum permitted height of a future hospital building from 20 metres to 40 metres. “ T h e ap p l i c a n t ’s request to vary the permitted height arises from a need for flexibility of design,” said Chris Osborne, city planner. “TDhe applicant expects the hospital to be 30-40 per cent larger than the existing building, much of which will be accommodated through the greater height of the new building, but does not anticipate that the full 40 metre height is likely to be achieved for any significant part of the main building.” But nearby resident Scott Macnab who lives on Evergreen Road, said all the unknowns are concerning. “The lack of plans means we can’t really assess the impact this change might have on our property,” Macnab wrote in a letter to council. “For example, were there to be a 40 metre high building on the Evergreen Road section...then the
impact on our property would likely be extremely high, were it located in most other areas...the impact on our property would likely be extremely low.” Macnab asked council to consider a compromise – impose limits on how close the building can be to the boundary of the property. “I understand that a 40 metre building will be required to be 20 metres from a front boundary. Would the city consider increasing this to 30 metres from the boundary on all sides?” Macnab asked. Ross Blackwell, the city’s land use manager, said that could affect how pedestrians perceive the building. “In balancing the height considerations, there are some urban design considerations that factor in and one of those urban design considerations is creating a strong street edge,” Blackwell said. “It’s fairly important in terms of a potential relationship with the neighbourhood in terms of pedestrian activity and so on and so forth. Thirty metres in staff ’s opinion would

be excessive. The numbers identified in the (staff) report I think are optimal.” City staff ’s report to council lays out a formula where a required setback is increased in line with any height setback in order to avoid an unduly dominant building. Staff recommends that any part of the building that is between 20 and 40 metres in height, must be set back eight meters in the front and 16 metres in the back. Blackwell said that formula ensures that the angle from the street to the top of the hospital does not increase and therefore should not have a sig-
nificant impact should VIHA choose to put the building close to Evergreen. “The applicant has confirmed in any case that siting the main body of the new building either on the upper (western) part of the site, or close to the Evergreen boundary would be impractical and very unlikely to appear in the final design,” Blackwell said. He added that the health authority has not submitted any definitive blueprints for the design and layout of the new hospital and he doesn’t expect VIHA will come back to council with
designs for future consideration. Blackwell said part of the reason for that is there has already been a discussion between the health authority and city staff on form and character – the type of
development permit the hospital triggered – that will be considered through the design phase. Blackwell said VIHA will be apprising council of design considerations.

NEWS Violent crime drops, but b&e, auto theft on the rise Violent crime is down slightly in Campbell River but residential break and enters and theft from vehicles is on the rise.
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 14, 2012
Break and enters to homes increased by 76 per cent in the second quarter of this year (AprilJune) over the previous quarter (January-March). “This increase contrasts with the historic low number of break and enters reported in quarter one of 2012 and is attributable to
a doubling in the overall number of residential break and enters (from 19 to 38), said Insp. Lyle Gelinas. According to Gelinas, police have identified several offenders responsible and have requested multiple break and enter charges against three
individuals. Business break and enters are down 48 per cent compared to the first six months of 2011 and are at their lowest level since July 2007. Thefts from vehicles increased 47 per cent, from 58 to 85, during the second quarter of this year compared

Our View
Did the Libs improve or NDP fail to inspire? A new Angus Reid poll has the provincial Liberals dancing in the corridors of power. For the first time in eight months the governing party has been able to modestly stem the exodus of supporters. We say: The Premier Christy Clark’s struggling opposition needs party garnered a paltry 25 per cent support in the online survey of 800 to get specific voters. But, that was an impressive about agenda three point gain in just one month. At the risk of raining on their parade it must be noted that this result was well within the poll’s 3.5 per cent margin of error. The NDP fell three points,
but retains a commanding 46 per cent lead. So the question becomes: Is Premier Clark getting her act together after months of lacklustre policy, failed photo opportunities and Asian junkets or is some of the veneer wearing off NDP Leader Adrian Dix? It is hard to make a case for significant improvement in Clark’s camp. Her A-Team cabinet shuffle last week was more disruptive than inspired primarily because she was plumbing the depths of her draining talent pool. And, her show-us-the- money approach to the Enbridge pipeline proposal utterly fails to address wide spread aversion to the pipeline and coastal oil tanker traffic.
It is easier to make the case that voters are starting to seriously rethink their assumption that Dix has a plan worth turfing the Liberals for. The NDP leader has been remarkable stingy when it comes to platform detail. We do know that he wants to tax the bankers until they cry ‘uncle.’ But, we don’t know much else. This week Dix said he’d extend liquor tax breaks to microdistilleries. That will help about seven people across B.C. If the polls are accurate – and they usually are – they seem to be telling Dix and his NDP brain trust to start getting specific about their 2013 agenda.

Safety issues on our roads
I am glad Willow Point received the beautification it needed and I like the look of downtown Campbell River. It is also a good thing that Campbellton is working towards an upgrade, but if and when any money comes available I feel a high priority should be placed on upgrading some of our hills and roads that are dangerous to the public. These would be Peterson Hill, Woodburn Road, one end to the other, especially the hill. The Park Road hill should also be placed on that priority list. It seems to me these projects keep getting pushed down the list instead of given a high priority. Thank you for your time. British Columbia’s towns tackle modern problems
Tom Fletcher B.C. Views
Local politicians are preparing for their annual convention, to be held Sept. 25-28 here in the provincial capital. One of the first orders of business this year will be a vote to raise the dues paid by local governments to the Union of B.C. Municipalities, to cover rising travel costs for staff to serve on provincial committees. The plan is also to change the name to Union of B.C. Local Governments, to reflect the participation of regional districts and aboriginal communities. So what do these committees and conferences accomplish? The UBCLG, as it will soon be known, is mainly a lobby group for local politicians to seek changes to federal and provin-
cial laws to keep up with changing times. The resolutions offer a snapshot of modern problems facing local governments. A major theme is public safety, and this year it is the Columbia Shuswap Regional District renewing a long-standing plea for more provincial policing money for rural communities. Surrey has a resolution seeking better notice and control of a growing number of medical marijuana licences issued by Ottawa. Local fire and police departments end up dealing with licensed grow-ops that spring up quietly and create electrical hazards, or expand production beyond their licences as this stealth legalization continues.
Pitt Meadows, home to a Hells Angels clubhouse and drug-related crime familiar to most urban communities, wants B.C. to follow Alberta’s lead and give police authority to remove known gang members from bars and clubs. Gangs tend to adopt certain establishments, and there isn’t much the owners or police can do about it. This year, the debate may go further. Metchosin is seeking support to call on Ottawa to decriminalize marijuana, ending a “failed policy which has cost millions of dollars in police, court, jail and social costs.” No chance of that under the Stephen Harper government, but it’s worthwhile to send the message. Another long-shot demand, sparked
by the abduction of three-year-old Kienan Hebert of Sparwood last year, is for Ottawa to make its sex offender registry public for convicted repeat offenders. Ashcroft councillors want to give emergency services authority to deal with another modern hazard: hoarding. Yes folks, it’s more than just a show on TV that exposes a creepy side effect of our bloated North American consumer culture. The Ashcroft resolution notes that obsessively piling stuff to the rafters is a growing problem. And as with marijuana grow ops, “local governments have little or no authority to enforce compliance with health and safety standards when a building is owner occupied.”

Parents concerned over loss of Ocean Grove school bus stop Ocean Grove parents are concerned about their children’s safety following a decision by School District 72 to remove the Maryland Road bus stop. Parents say that’s left their children to take unsafe routes in order to get themselves to Ocean Grove elementary school, just south of the city limits in the Crawford Road neighbourhood. “My issues are the options these students have been given to get to (an alternate) bus stop and to then get to school,” said Lisa Broderick, who’s eightyear-old daughter and five-year-old son attend Ocean Grove. “They can walk through Willow Creek Park where there’s frequent bear sightings or they can cross busy streets without safe crosswalks. It’s not a safe option in our minds and I don’t understand why the stop has been taken off

Jeff Frumento, a parent concerned about the loss of the Maryland stop, says the bus pictured here is blocking the crosswalk and hugging the shoulder line, reasons the school district gives for taking away the Maryland stop. the route. That’s where the majority of kids that get on the bus get the bus.” For as long as Broder-
ick’s daughter has been going to school, the Ocean Grove school bus has stopped along the Old Island Highway at
Barlow Road near Rona, then at Dahl, followed by Twilingate, then on to Maryland, with the last stop at Washing-
ton, before stopping at the school. About five or six families use the Maryland stop. But when school started last week, parents and kids were in for a surprise when the bus skipped the Maryland stop altogether. “My daughter told me kids were missed on the first day of school because they were standing there and the bus just drove by,” said Broderick, one of a handful of concerned parents. Superintendent Tom Longridge said he was “not aware of that” but pointed out that all the school bus stops were publicized in the newspaper before the start of the school year. “There may have been an expectation in some parents’ minds and they may not have looked at the newspaper or on the website and assumed it was the same,” said Longridge who added a letter went home to Ocean Grove parents on Sept. 6 informing them Continued on A10

Parents: SD72 offers unsafe alternatives
Continued from A10 of the route change. Longridge said a decision was made to take the Maryland stop off the route after a review of the school district’s transportation system. “It became evident that particular bus stop was not safe,” Longridge said. “The school bus was impeding traffic because it was not
able to fully pull off the (highway) and it blocks the crosswalk and the signal lights for other motorists. It also blocks the visibility of motorists turning left off of Maryland onto the highway.” The school district was also warned by the Vehicle Safety Authority, a branch of the provincial gover nment,
that SD72 would be ticketed if it continued to use that stop, because it was unsafe said Longridge. A decision was made to scratch the Maryland stop but instead of replacing it, students have to choose between already established stops at either Twilingate or Washington, but getting to each stop
presents its own challenges and is roughly a 15 minute walk away from Maryland Road. Broderick said her two kids can catch the Washington bus and walk through the subdivision, crossing busy streets with no crosswalk, or they can get the bus at Twilingate but then they have to walk along the high-

way, with no sidewalk. If they want to avoid the busy Old Island Highway, they can walk to the top of Maryland, cut through the Willow Creek Conservation Area, and then walk back down to the bottom of Twilingate where they would have to cross, without a crosswalk, to the other side of the road where the bus stops. Broderick doesn’t buy the school district’s reasons for scratching the stops. “I’ve been right behind the bus (at Maryland) and it’s never been a problem to pass,” she said. She also noted that the bus can’t fully pull over at Twilingate and the bus blocks the crosswalk and lights at Dahl, not just Maryland. But Longridge said there is more room to pull over at Twilingate than at Maryland. “It’s not as bad, it may not be ideal but it still meets the standards,” he said. “I think in that area it’s wider and there’s no ditch. At Maryland the bus has to stop right at the crosswalk and it blocks the

sible,” Longridge said. “We have walk limits and our policy is to transport them if they can’t walk. From what I understand they can move safely within the housing developments and they may choose to go through a trail as a short cut but there is a way to walk through the subdivision. It may be longer than they walked (before) but it’s certainly within the walk limits.”

Working at Tyee Chev Olds, King was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis over 20 years ago and went permanently into a wheelchair in 2006. Campbell River Mirror celebrates its carrier force with 7th annual Carrier Appreciation Barbecue Through rain, sleet snow and hail, the saying goes, newspaper carriers deliver your Campbell River Mirror. Each year the paper puts on a barbecue celebration with the help of M&M Meats, Quality Foods, Thrifty Foods, Save-on Foods and London Drugs in the newspaper’s parking lot to say thanks to our dedicated carrier force. Service awards were handed out and this year’s Ken Daneliuk and Natalia Hutchins Memorial Award was presented to Tom and Shirley Ostashek. Music was provided, as always, by DJ Ron Hanscomb.
Mirror staffers Dean Taylor (centre) and Don Daniels (right) dished up the dogs and the burgers for hungry carriers and their families.
Mya Wood, 11, helped serve up one of two thank-you cakes donated by Quality Foods.
Mirror Publisher Zena Williams (left) and Circulation Manager Shelley Quewezance expressed their thanks.
LOWEST PRICE EVER!
Families of carriers were invited too, and hot, sunny conditions had many moving their chairs to the shade to enjoy their hamburgers and hot dogs.
Newspaper carrier William Rufus received a five-year service award and brought his sister along who often accompanies him on his route.

WISE BUYERS READ THE LEGAL COPY: Vehicle(s) may be shown with optional equipment. Dealer may sell or lease for less. Limited time offers. Offers may be cancelled at any time without notice. Dealer order or transfer may be required as inventory may vary by dealer. See your Ford Dealer for complete details or call the Ford Customer Relationship Centre at 1-800-565-3673. ‡Ford Employee Pricing (“Employee Pricing”) is available from June 14, 2012 to October 1, 2012 (the “Program Period”), on the purchase or lease of most new 2012/2013 Ford vehicles (excluding all chassis cab and cutaway body models, F-150 Raptor, Medium Trucks, Mustang Boss 302, and 2013 Shelby GT500). Employee Pricing refers to A-Plan pricing ordinarily available to Ford of Canada employees (excluding any CAW-negotiated programs). The new vehicle must be delivered or factory-ordered during the Program Period from your participating Ford Dealer. This offer can be used in conjunction with most retail consumer offers made available by Ford at either the time of factory order or delivery, but not both. Employee Pricing is not combinable with CPA, GPC, CFIP, Daily Rental Allowance and A/X/Z/D/F-Plan programs. ‡‡No purchase necessary. For full contest rules, eligible vehicle criteria, and to enter as a Ford owner, visit www. ford.ca/shareourpridecontest (follow the entry path applicable to you, complete all mandatory fields and click on ‘submit’) or visit your local Ford Dealer for details. Open only to residents of Canada who have reached the age of majority, possess a valid graduated level provincially issued driver’s license, and are owners of Ford branded vehicles (excluding fleet customers and all Lincoln and Mercury models). Eligible vehicle criteria includes requirement that it be properly registered in Canada in the contest entrant’s name (matching vehicle ownership), and properly registered/plated and insured. Non-Ford owners can enter by mailing an original 100 word essay on “what they like about Ford”, with their full name, full mailing address, email, daytime phone number (with area code) to: Vanessa Richard, Pareto Corp., 1 Concorde Gate, Suite 200, Toronto, ON, M3C 4G4. Contest closes at 11:59pm (PST) on the last day of the 2012 Ford Employee Pricing campaign which will be no earlier than August 31, 2012. Limit of 1 entry per person. Up to 8 prizes available to be won in Canada in 3 possible prize categories, each worth up to CAD$50,000. Chances of winning are dependent on the total number of entries received up to each 10,000 interval of unit sales under the Employee Pricing campaign (“Draw Trigger”). Odds of winning decrease as the contest progresses, more entries are made into the contest, and opportunities for Draw Triggers lessen. Skill testing question required. *Purchase a new 2012 Fiesta SE Sedan/2012 Focus SE Sedan/2012 Fusion SE with automatic transmission/2013 Escape SE FWD with 1.6L EcoBoost Engine/2012 F-150 Platinum Super Crew 4x4 for $16,654/$19,369/$19,981/$26,030/$46,413 after Total Eligible Price Adjustment of $995/$1,280/$6,368/$2,519/$14,186 (Total Eligible Price Adjustment is a combination of Employee Price Adjustment of $995/$1,280/$1,868/$2,019/$7,186 and delivery allowance of $0/$0/$4,500/$500/$7,000) is deducted. Taxes payable on full amount of purchase price after Total Eligible Price Adjustment has been deducted. Actual fuel consumption will vary based on road conditions, vehicle loading, vehicle equipment, and driving habits. ◆Some mobile phones and some digital media players may not be fully compatible – check www.syncmyride.com for a listing of mobile phones, media players, and features supported. Driving while distracted can result in loss of vehicle control, accident and injury. Ford recommends that drivers use caution when using mobile phones, even with voice commands. Only use mobile phones and other devices, even with voice commands, not essential to driving when it is safe to do so. SYNC is optional on most new Ford vehicles. ◆◆Remember that even advanced technology cannot overcome the laws of physics. It’s always possible to lose control of a vehicle due to inappropriate driver input for the conditions. ▼Offer only valid from September 1 2012 to October 31, 2012 (the “Offer Period”) to resident Canadians with a Costco membership on or before August 31, 2012. College gets money for upgraded safety systems North Island College campuses will soon have improved and upgraded campus safety systems, thanks to $652,000 in capital funding from the Province. The upgrades are designed to help ensure campus infrastructure and operational systems are perform-
ing at optimal levels, which is important to keep B.C.’s campuses in top operating shape, according to the Ministry of Advanced Education. Work at the Campbell River, Comox Valley and Port Alberni campuses is expected to be completed by the end of the summer.

he first ever B.C. Pole Fitness Championships, here Saturday, has attracted 24 participants from across the province and judges from as far away as Colorado and Australia. Robynne SharkoStapley, owner of The Vertical Gym on 12th Avenue and the organizer of the
event, says two of her students will also be competing. “This is the first year Canada has held regional competitions and we are very excited to be the designated British Columbia location,” Sharko-Stapley says. Contestants, 18 to 40-plus, will compete at the Campbell River Community Centre starting at 6 p.m. with the winner advancing to the Canadian championships in Vancouver Oct. 13.
The winner of that competition will head to Switzerland in November for the World championship. Sharko-Stapley says the sport is rooted in the traditions of African and Chinese pole dancing and ribbon dancing. Some professionals advance to take up dancing careers with Cirque du Soleil. None of the pole gymnasts are headed for strip clubs, she insists. In fact, the competition rules
specifically prohibit exotic high heels, the removal of any clothing and suggestive movements. There will be an after party at the Paramount tomorrow evening with exclusive performances by the judges including the Canadian judge, Crystal Lai, a former Miss Pole Dance Canada. Tickets are available at the door or at The Vertical Gym, 850 G 12th Ave., or online at www.theverticalgym.
he first ever reality TV mini-series about careers in B.C.’s mining industry continues this Saturday at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. across British Columbia. Mining Your Future showcases 24 diverse careers and offers an inside look at this modern-day industry that provides over 10,000 employees in communities across the province. The series was filmed with the support of companies in mining operations and development – including Campbell River’s Myra Falls operation – the B.C. government, the Mining Association of B.C., Association for Mineral Exploration BC and the BC HR Task Force: Mineral Exploration, Mining, Stone, Sand & Gravel. There are over 120 careers in the industry; the 24 selected to appear in this year’s shows are only the tip of the iceberg. “The Mining Your Future TV mini-series provides a unique opportunity for British Columbians from the comfort of their own
couch, to discover the industry that has some of the province’s highest paying jobs,” says Campbell River’s Dave Bazowski, representing the BC Mining HR Task Force. The show will air every Saturday until Oct. 27. on KVOS at 11:30 and CHEK at 2 p.m. Each episode will showcase three different careers, a Fact Digging segment by BCIT that reveals a fun fact about the industry and a Mining Gives Back segment by Goldcorp that depicts the heart of the industry in B.C. “The BC Mining HR Task Force fundamentally supported this pilot miniseries because B.C. is hitting a critical labour shortage with the aging demographic – 40 per cent of our industry is 50 years plus,: Bazowski says. “Additionally, our industry will need over 10,000 new recruits by 2021. It is important that British Columbians are provided the opportunity to explore the many career opportunities our industry provides throughout B.C.”

Emergency surgery for kittens drains Quadra Cat Rescue funds

deformed eyeball. “These kittens were brought in just in time,” said Valerie van Veen of Quadra Cat Rescue. “Dogwood Veterinary Hospital checked the kittens to ensure they had a good chance of survival and perfor med the suc-

Transition society needs mom mentors The Campbell River and North Island Transition Society is beginning a new training program for the “Moms Mentoring Moms” Community Based Mentorship Program. This program is designed to support moms whose parenting has been impacted by addiction. The intention of the program is to enhance parenting skill, social supports and community involvement of the mother seeking support. Would you like to be a mentor? Are you an experienced mom who would like to help another mom? Have you got three hours weekly to spare? This could be an opportunity for you to be a positive role model. There will be training provided prior to being matched with a mom. There will also be ongoing training monthly. The commitment is three hours weekly and one meeting per month with the program manager and other mentors. The transition house is using mentors in a variety of ways and if you would like to get involved they would love to hear from you. They are interested in gardening, cooking mentors and other skills that would be helpful to our clients. Check out the web site at www.annelmorehouse.ca for more information on what the transition house does. The training will begin Monday, Oct. 1 at 6:30-9 p.m. Phone 250-287-7384 for an application package.

Anti-bullying program returns S
chools across Campbell River will be joining with the RCMP once again this year to pick-up an anti-bullying program that was piloted in the community last year. Just prior to the end of the 2012 school year, teacher Adria Glessn, parent Terri Cox, students Ben Lowe, Haley Wingert, Dean Ciarniello and Holly Crosby met with principal Joanne Crawford, Const. Krista Wallis, singer/ songwriter Keisja Cox from Courtenay and artist Jill Banting to discuss bullying. Banting gathered ideas and inspirations and what emerged was WITS – Walk Away, Ignore, Talk it out, and Seek help. From this, she created an image which visually shows what WITS represents. Taylor Kare, a nowgraduated Timberline media student, filmed the meeting, which can be viewed on YouTube at youtu.be/ T1zEMZfXgE0 WITS is a program that brings together schools, families and communities to help children deal with bullying, peer victimization and to encourage parents to respond to children’s requests for help. Baikie Island in the Campbell River estuary was once a heavily industrialized log sorting site. Thanks to community rehabiliation efforts, it’s a thriving, natural ecosystem once again.
Sept. 30, 2012 is World Rivers Day, and it will mark the official opening of the Baikie Island Nature Reserve. Once an industrial site, Baikie Island has now been reclaimed and returned to its natural state. The transformation has been shortlisted twice for national reclamation awards. To celebrate the opening of the nature reserve, the City of Campbell River Recreation & Culture Department is offering three free, escorted tours of the island. The first tour takes place on

Yes, I know that there is one caveat to that statement, and it is “unless the stop cannot be made in safety.” The onus is on the driver that does not stop for the yellow light to show that it was unsafe if they are involved in court proceedings because of their decision. Is anyone able to tell me what a stale green light is? That’s right, it’s a traffic signal that will soon be turning from green to yellow. An example of a stale green light would be one that you have not seen turn green so that you don’t know how long it has been that way, one that has a solid red hand “don’t walk” signal facing the same direction of travel or perhaps the cross street has many vehicles waiting for the red.

on Vancouver Island Why an Aquaculture Awareness Week? Did you know that the three largest companies who produce British Columbia’s largest agricultural export - farm-raised salmon – are all based right here in Campbell River? Did you know that salmon farming provides around 4,500 jobs in the Comox-Strathcona region? These are just a few of the pieces of information that we as salmon farmers want to share with our neighbours in the River City this week as we roll out our second annual Aquaculture Awareness Week. Here’s another key piece of information: Did you know this year the world’s population reached nine billion people? What does that have to do with aquaculture? A whole lot. There are more people than ever in this world and that number is growing every minute, every second. As the population grows, there are more and more people who need to eat – and we as global citizens need to think about

how we can help. Canada has much to offer: land, freshwater – and British Columbia, and Campbell River, also have a rich coastline that already plays a key role in providing healthy protein to the world. That’s a big picture – but it’s one the salmon farmers in your community are thinking about regularly. Our commitment to environmental protection, attention to responsible practices and dedication to the communities where we operate are all brush strokes in that big picture. Aquaculture will be critical in providing food for the future – and Campbell River farmers are already leading the way. Chances are, there’s a lot more to salmon farming than you already know – and the job of the BC Salmon Farmers Association is raise that awareness.
MEET OUR FARMERS RAPPELLING over the side of cliffs, flying through the air on a line attached to a helicopter, swimming icy island rivers – It’s the kind of work worthy of a full time job, but for Mainstream Canada’s Certification and Quality Manager Richard Finch, it’s a volunteer gig. As a member of the Campbell River Ground Search and Rescue team, Richard is regularly running risk in order to help people stranded, injured or worse in the great wilderness around us. Each month, we highlight someone working in the salmon farming industry who is going above and beyond in their after-work hours. To read the full post, visit www.bcsfabeyondexpectations.wordpress.com
