Governor General recipient struggled in school Renee Andor Black Press

COURTENAY — Mark R. Isfeld Secondary School’s Alistair Vanbergen is not the typical candidate for academic awards.

Although the 19-year-old 4.0 GPA graduate is the school’s recipient of the Governor General Academic Medal winner for his work last year, Vanbergen used to struggle in school.

He said Grade 9 was “incredibly tough” and he dropped out of school partway through that year.

“Then I took two years off, tried doing stuff through NIDES (North Island Distance Education School, now known as Navigate), managed sort of — I managed to finish about onefourth of my Science 10 class, and that was it,” he said, adding he was told he could go into Grade 11 at Isfeld, if he finished everything required over the summer beforehand. “So I finished all that in six weeks — I did my socials, I did my science, my English,

and then I just came here.”

Vanbergen added he did not enjoy school, but realized he had to graduate to be able to move ahead with his life.

During his time at Isfeld, he mainly took academic courses he needed to graduate — and he excelled in all of them.

“I only took four classes this year spaced out. I won (class awards in) all of them; I won the law 12, geography 12, math foundations 11, math apps 12 awards, and before that, English 12 and chemistry 11,” said Vanbergen.

Vanbergen is from England, and his family first moved to

Florida when he was eight, then spent some time in Montreal before coming out to B.C. They moved around about once per year until settling in the Comox Valley about four or five years ago.

Vanbergen noted he only became an official Canadian

citizen shortly after he graduated in June.

He plans to stay in

the Valley to spend one year at North Island College before

transferring to UVic next September.

“I’m not quite sure what I’m majoring in but eventually I plan to go to law school,” said Vanbergen, adding law is one of the few subjects that truly interests him.

“I like logic, I really like something that follows rationale and I like debating.”

He added law 12 was one of the few classes he put considerable effort into — because it interested him.

“Not every day, but most days, I’d go online and look up the actual cases trying to find out more information than was in the book,” he said.

Vanbergen describes himself as an “incredibly dull person” in terms of hobbies and interests, but he noted he enjoys reading and running in his spare time.

On August 27th, Hudson Johnson landed his 42.5 lb Tyee. The first week of September saw fish coming in between 13 and 30 pounds. If .

When the rain comes, they will move along into the upper reaches of the river. The various pools are still loaded with fish and the warm weather has brought out the anglers in full force.

I had a chance to speak with Betty and Inge Underdal visiting from Mill Valley, California who were excited to snorkel with the salmon this year. Betty said that the experience seeing the ssalmon in the river was tthe highlight of this yyear’s trip. They thought tthey saw a sturgeon in one of the upper ppools. The possibility of seeing a sturgeon in the CCampbell River is rare.

Fishing remains ssteady at Nootka Sound with limits of Coho and Betty, George & Inge bottom fish. On the Labour Day weekend, Andy Gendaszek became this year’s King of the Kayak Fishing Derby at Moutcha Bay when he landed a 22.5 pound Chinook. Eighteen anglers took part in this year’s derby. On Saturday, September 22, I will be hosting the fun, free fishing derby at Roberts Lake. Lorna Duncan is holding this first time event and will be serving up free hotdogs and chili with lemonade throughout the day. Roberts Lake is located halfway between Campbell River and Sayward. Anglers who have fished Roberts Lake say that the best fishing is on the north side of the lake and some big fish can be caught trolling the wall. Come out and join us for a day of fun, free fishing at Roberts Lake, Saturday, September 22.

Why athletes thank their moms Q. What do the smartest--or really the savviest--elite athletes do with their brains before stepping into the arena of play?

A. Like chess masters and top musicians, superstar athletes know how to turn on just those parts of the brain relevant to the task at hand, though there’s much mystery in how this is done, says Nick Bascom in “Brainy Ballplayers” in “Science News” magazine.

“That’s why athletes usually thank God or their moms,” adds cognitive psychologist SianBeilock. “They don’t know what they just did so they don’t know what else to say.”

Baseball catcher Yogi Berra once quipped that “he couldn’t think and hit at the same time,” and neuroscientist John Milton believes there’s a lot of insight in that since devoting too much conscious

attention to swing mechanics can activate unfamiliar parts of the brain and throw off performance.

“This is because the expert’s brain has already figured out the optimal movement solution, and any conscious change will disrupt that.” So once the brain’s conscious regions are lulled and quieted, the wellpracticed motor centres get free reign to guide the athlete to victory.

Beilock concurs that “paralysis by analysis” can make a baseball bat, golf club, or tennis racket feel like a foreign and unwieldy object. As golfer Bubba Watson once advised a slumping Tiger Woods, he was being too mental with his swing and needed to fire his swing coach and “just go out there and play golf.”

We should really be asking, “What’s gotten into today’s TVs?” Movement on a TV screen is basically a changing pattern of light hitting the retinas of the eyes, with typical TV images flickering at about 60 cycles per second, or 60 HZ, says University of British Columbia behaviourist Stanley Coren in “Discover” magazine. Since the average person is unable to detect any flickering above 55 HZ, the TV images blend smoothly into a continuous flow.

But dogs such as beagles can see flicker rates up to 75 Hz,

suggesting that they perceive motion better than people and can resolve higher flicker rates – meaning what they see appears more fragmented and less real to them. Thus, they haven’t been terribly drawn to TV. Enter high-definition television (HDTV). As Coren explains, “Since high-resolution digital screens are refreshed at a much higher rate, reports are increasingly surfacing of pooches who become very interested in new technology HDTVs when a nature show contains images of animals moving.”

Q. Where do cinematic stunt performers go to learn how NOT to die?

A. For many, it’s the International Stunt School (ISS), where they practice crashing through glass, catching on fire, falling from great heights and many others, that in

real life would leave most of us in pieces, says Shane Snow in “Wired” magazine. Yet these specialists out of ISS skillfully wind up taking barely a few bumps and bruises.

“Everything is based on safety and calculation,” affirmed school president Ian Boushey.

The standard three-week program begins with instructing trainees how to fall without injury, fake a fight or roll down stairs. Then it’s “ratchet pulls” where they’re yanked on a wire to make it look like a shock wave has just blown them backward. Finally come precision driving, high falls onto air bags and fire burns. “You just can’t beat being lit on fire,” said one ISS graduate who revealed that besides wearing a fireproof suit, one trick is choosing natural fibers like cotton that don’t melt like nylon.

Body glues and stitches broken bones back together So what really happens after you break a bone? How can something that’s broken join back together to be as good as new? Your body essentially glues and stitches the bones back together in three main phases.

Soon after you have broken a bone, red blood cells travel to, and collect around, the site of the injury.

Once the blood cells have arrived, the blood vessels around the broken bone constrict and stop any further bleeding. Within a few hours, these blood cells form a blood clot known as a hematoma.

Cells that make the components needed to regenerate the bone are present in the

hematoma. These cells and the clotted blood cells form a loose mass called granulation tissue. Granulation tissue will eventually form into a new bone.

Over the next few days, the second phase of bone healing takes place. The granulation tissue becomes denser and actually turns into a type of cartilage. Once the bone has healed sufficiently, physiotherapy may be appropriate to help restore strength and mobility to the joints

near the break.

Controversial tractor back on North Island Aidan O’Toole Black Press PORT McNEILL— The Hornsby “Mammoth” Steam Chain Crawler has returned to the North Island. The 100-year-old machine has been the subject of some controversy in recent years after being transported to Alberta in 2005, but a court hearing saw the historic tractor bound for the North Island once again.

The machine was somewhat of a prototype when it was built in 1910, combining the power of a steam engine with the then-new principle of a chain track to create a tanklike tractor. Its creator, Richard Hornsby & Sons of Grantham, England, had the patent for the crawler track and promoted the new machine to the military but

without success. The machine was shipped to Canada after being sold to the Northern Light Power & Coal Company to haul coal in the Yukon.

This was the only sale, which prompted the disillusioned owners to sell the patent to the Holt Manufacturing Company (later to

become Caterpillar).

As a result, the “Mammoth” is the only one of its type in the world.

After being stored at Seven Hills Golf Club for a number of years, the machine was taken to Alberta

by George Hoffman.

In a settlement reached in court in Port Hardy in June, Hoffman was ordered to return the machine to the North Island no later than Aug. 31.

And Hoffman used every minute of that time. “(Hoffman) e-mailed me Thursday afternoon (Aug. 30) to say he’d be on the 8 a.m. ferry to Nanaimo the next day,” said

James Furney, president of the North Island Heritage Society.

“That was the first time I’d heard from him since he was up here for the court hearing.

“The plan had been to store it at Western Forest Products yard here in Port McNeill, but they were shut down for the week.

At the grace of the Lemare (Lake Logging) guys, they said ‘Sure, we can take it.’ And that was on just a couple hours notice.”

The Mammoth will now remain at Lemare’s yard until the NIHS can meet to recommend a permanent home to the RDMW. The RD have set out some criteria for the new home, explained Furney. “The land it’s on should be public; they definitely want this to be in the public

realm; if it went into private hands for a short time while building was done for a permanent home, that would probably be okay.”

As reported previously in the North Island Gazette, Coal Harbour has been preparing a new home for the tractor in the hopes of getting the nod from the NIHS.

“We’ve got such a strong push from Coal Harbour I don’t see why it wouldn’t go there, but it’s got some backing here in Port McNeill as well,” said Furney. “An attraction like that in Coal Harbour, well, everybody going to see it probably goes through Port McNeill and Port Hardy anyway.”
