esidents at Delta View Habilitation Centre might soon be moving to Highland Lodge in Langley, despite the fact Fraser Health plans to have it decommissioned.

"My understanding is they are considering it," says BC NDP Seniors' Critic Katrine Conroy, adding Fraser Health would lease it back from Pinnacle Care Group and renovate.

Don Sutherland, a former teacher at Richardson and Jarvis primary schools, is at Delta View. Diagnosed with dementia in 1999, his wife Bonnie took care of him at home until 2008, when she placed him in residence at Northcrest in North Delta.

After some frustrating experiences there, Bonnie was fearful he would be moved to Riverview in Coquitlam. It was a great relief to get him into Delta View.

"There isn't another facility that handles this level of challenging patient at as costeffective a price," she said.

Concerned about where her husband might wind up, she visited Highland Lodge, which currently operates a 60-bed facility.

She sat for 30 minutes watching a group of seniors and nobody came to check on them.

"If someone was in crisis you couldn't find someone for love or money," she said.

Fraser Health had been funding Delta View at $318 per bed per day, but recently lowered that to $286 per bed per day, leaving them operating at below cost. Administrators said they had no choice but to cancel their contract with Fraser Health.

Aly Devji, assistant administrator at Delta View said no reasonable offer was made and they are finishing the contract with Fraser Health at a financial loss.

"We had offered to pull our notice off the table if they had increased the budget to a fair number."

Now Fraser Health plans to move 71 tertiary acute care and nine residential patients

by March of 2013. Some people believe Highland Lodge will be the destination.

"I've heard the rumours, as everyone else has, but I cannot confirm nor deny it," says Devji.

But Devji added Fraser Health has publicly stated one of the facilities being considered was decommissioned and would need to be renovated before it's used again.

A new purpose-built facility is being planned by Fraser Health, which tried to negotiate with Delta View to extend their 365day notice to three years. Those negotiations fell through.

Dan Kipper, Fraser Health's director of Mental Health and Substance Use, says there

are two interim facilities being examined, but wouldn't say where.

"Certainly, families have been concerned around the change in the location, and rightly so. We certainly understand that and want to work with them to reassure them that the program that we do develop at the interim site will be of a very high standard and the quality of care will be very similar to what's being offered at Delta View now."

But Devji says Delta View was purposebuilt for patients with dementia and run with a philosophy known as "hugs not drugs."

"I would say for any facility to replicate what has been done in the Habilitation Centre, it would be a very challenging task," he said.

The NDP's Conroy doesn't think it makes sense to spend millions to renovate a building that's being decommissioned for what's essentially a temporary solution.

"These are fragile seniors," she says. "It's very difficult for people in that condition to be moved."

Mission resident Wendy Wenberg, whose husband Keith is at Delta View, is exasperated by the whole ordeal.

"These residents get hugs and kisses from the care aides," she says. "They talk to them.

They're just so caring there. Why upset that?" adrian@southdeltaleader.com

Relative newcomer Bryce Williams has been elected Chief of the Tsawwassen First nation. in a surprising result, the 22-year-old single term member of the TFn council narrowly beat out incumbent Kim Baird when the votes were counted Wednesday evening (Sept. 5).

Williams received 78 votes, while Baird got 69.

"Countdown is a horse race.

Bryce is 3 ahead of me. Should be another half hour. Count is switching between chief & legisKim Baird lators," Baird Tweeted on election night as the votes were tallied.

A total of 260 TFn members from the population of 439 were eligible to vote.

According to figures released by TFn officials Wednesday night, 148 members voted, a turnout rate of 57 per cent.

Baird, 42, had been chief for 13 years, steering her community through a historic treaty negotiation process and into the early development stages of large-scale residential and commercial projects. in the 2009 election she was acclaimed chief.

Williams, a native carver, was the youngest member of the TFn Bryce Williams executive, and a selection in the South Delta Leader's 30 Under 30 feature edition in 2010. in an interview at the time, Williams said that as a member of the executive he wanted to be a positive role model and benefit his community the best he could.

One of his goals was to create more recreational opportunities for youth living on Tsawwassen First nation land. "i want to be there for the youth and help get a hockey/lacrosse box going here, and a baseball field or soccer field—things like that," he said.

Mischief on the links Seems like some gremlins were up to no good last Friday night (Aug. 31) as Delta Police received a mischief complaint that someone had overturned some golf carts and removed the flags from holes at King's Links By the Sea is east Ladner.

The suspects also left empty liquor bottles on the golf course. no other damage was noted and possible video surveillance footage of the incident is being reviewed by investigators in an attempt to identify possible suspect or suspects.

Ladner girls soccer team net $125,000 for field upgrades in BMO's Team of the Week national contest PhiliP RaphaeL Editor

Riding a late, surging wave of support, the Ladner Storm U10 girls soccer team netted the $125,000 first prize in BMO's Team of the Week contest that was announced live on CTV's Canada AM show early Wednesday (Sept. 5) morning.

The result came from two weeks of online voting last month for 15 teams from across the country.

The $125,000 will be used to upgrade a local sports field. In addition, the team gets $5,000 to donate to its charity of choice—BC Children's Hospital—and receive tickets to watch the Canadian Major League Soccer team of their choice.

The Storm started out in 13th place in the contest and steadily rose through the rankings, flirting with first place on the final day of voting on Aug. 27.

"We had to have a practice in an out of the way place so we could get the photos and make sure the girls were ready to appear on TV early the next morning," she said.

"The young kids who were just born, or three or four, the experiences they are going through now is what we're trying to focus on," Morrall. "And we've never had a young person speak to how it affected them. And I think it's time we do something for them."

Morrall thinks numbers will be lower this year, compared to the 10th anniversary event which drew about 900 motorcycles.

Annual Terry Fox Run in Tsawwassen growing in numbers and money raised

ow do you re-ignite local interest in one of Canada's longestrunning, fundraising events in support of cancer research?

For Gail McEwan, the answer was pretty simple.

"We had to literally stop traffic," explains the co-chair of the Terry Fox Run which is set for Sept. 16 and begins from Rotar y Philip Square in TsawRaphael wassen.

McEwan says that while community support for the event has been pretty healthy since a local run was established in 1985, the run needed to be freshened up to draw more people.

"Because today, it seems just about everyone has a story related to cancer," says McEwan, a Tsawwassen Rotary Club member who is being assisted by husband Mike for the second year in a row.

McEwan says previous runs followed routes that kept the event away from areas where the public could see it pass through.

"Not enough people knew that a runway happening," she says.

So, last year the route was re-aligned to take the 10 km run from the Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall and down through Boundary Bay Park, while the 5 km version winds its way along Beach Grove.

Both runs end back at Rotary Square

where a number of events have been organized, including a post-run barbecue, face painting, live jazz music and a juggler to entertain the expected crowd.

"Before there wasn't anything afterwards and it was sort of like, 'thanks for coming,'" McEwan says. "Now, we want to make it more of an event, right from the registration time before the run, to afterwards when people return."

The strategy seems to be paying off.

Three years ago, the local run attracted just 90 people.

In 2011, the numbers of people running and walking rose to 352 participants. They raised $10,426. Plus, 65 volunteers took part to manage the event.

That has helped South Delta's contribution to the Terry Fox Run reach a total of approximately $107,000 that has been raised since 1997.

Add in the total raised through the 28 participating schools across Delta in 2011—$19,170—and that makes for a pretty impressive number.

"That's a great total for a small community like ours," McEwan says, "but we have always said that the first goal is raising awareness, and then the money will look after itself."

Pre-registration for the run can be done at the new location of Muscle Memory at 5670 12th Ave. Terry Fox Run merchandise can also be purchased there with all proceeds going back to the Terry Fox Foundation.

Registration can also be done on the day of the run, starting at 8:30 a.m.

It has always been a problem area, but lately has turned into absolute gridlock (on all roads south of Hwy. 99) from 2:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. at least.

Port growth needed?

Port Metro Vancouver (PMV) is now suggesting that a six per cent growth in one year demonstrates the need to add a second container terminal on Roberts Bank.

The facts suggest otherwise.

Cumulative average annual growth for containers through PMV between 2006 and end 2011 was 1.77 per cent. Even if the six percent growth is maintained by end 2012 the six-year cumulative annual growth rate would be only 2.5 per cent.

The recent slow down in Asia, notably in China, means much lower growth going forward. Plus, the expanded Panama Canal will likely take business away by 2015— with some vessels bypassing West Coast ports altogether.

Another issue conveniently ignored is the Port of Prince Rupert.

Blueberry, bean, pea and hay harvesting time is already upon us and in the next few weeks there will be potatoes, cranberries and other vegetable crops.

A clear run on the internal streets—64th St., 68th St., and 60th Ave. is essential for movement of these crops, and some farmers have to bring produce into and out of this area along Hwy. 17.

Some blueberry shipments are close to being downgraded because of transportation times. We cannot wait while various departments discuss this issue. We need some relief now.

Once this season is over, we will then need to look at more permanent measures.

The SFPR is touted to be the solution, but I somewhat doubt it will take care of all the problems.

It also will not be in use until December 2013, or possibly later.

These areas, Tilbury and Crescent Island, need the transportation issues handled immediately.

PMV also ignores other opportunities. One of the Vancouver inner harbour ports says it wants to expand to double its existing capacity. Other container ports also have the ability to expand.

If Port Metro Vancouver still suggests it has capacity constraints why then is it stating it will not look at further expansion of inner harbour terminals until after 2030?

In fact, taking B.C. Container Ports as a whole, by the year 2020 total container capacity should be eight to 9 million and by 2025 12 million, whereas it is unlikely they

will handle more than 5.5 million.

All this w ithout a s e cond container terminal on Roberts Bank ever being built.

B.C. ports today handle 600,000 U.S.-bound containers which could grow to about 1.6 million in the future. It could be argued that the entire Terminal 2 project for Roberts Bank is being planned to handle container volumes destined to the U.S.A. It is time Port Metro Vancouver started paying attention to those who live in Delta. The hundreds of yellow “Farms not Ports” signs all over the place send a clear message.

No—residents of South Delta are not prepared to accept Terminal 2 nor any further degradation in their lifestyle, their air quality, their traffic and their environment.

election won't change things in South Delta in American politics, the incumbent president in his last year is usually referred to as a "lame duck." that's because the entire country generally gets into campaign mode to prepare for the next election and nothing gets done, other than the odd bit of rhetoric and promises of putting a man on the moon.

Although it's no different in British Columbia, you'd hardly know an election is just eight months away and closing fast. even as the governing BC liberals prepare to gather together the troops for a fourth consecutive run at the helm, they're losing some key generals.

Finance Minister Kevin Falcon has stepped down, followed quickly by education Minister George Abbott, parliamentary secretary John les, and Children's Minister Mary Mcneil.

Christy Clark isn't just a lame duck premier, she's practically a dead duck. the writing's on the wall, and it's calling for a BC nDP government in the spring.

And much like Falcon, Abbott, and others, there are liberal candidates here in South Delta who don't even know if they want the job.

Although the riding has been held by independent MlA Vicki Huntington since 2009 after former liberal Val Roddick stood by and did little as the government tried to gut Delta Hospital, the liberals have a good chance of winning here.

But only two people have tossed their names into the hat thus far. Delta Chamber of Commerce president Kelly Guichon, and tsawwassen travel agent Bruce Fougner. And word is that Guichon might be getting cold feet.

Here in South Delta, it's difficult to know whether people should even care. if the BC nDP are elected, as predicted, the riding will likely be held in opposition either by a BC liberal or an independent. if the BC liberals somehow pull off a miracle comeback win, ala Alberta's Progressive Conservatives, history has taught us that South Delta gets ignored by Victoria anyway.

Right now it's difficult to say whether that lame duck should be saved or served a l'orange.

Hunger pains Ladner mom Susanne Szabo-MacDonald takes steps to raise funds for daughter's rare disease

L

adner's Ellie MacDonald looks like a typical healthy and happy toddler, with bright blue eyes and wavy, blonde hair.

She's curious, playful, can speak a few words, and is learning to walk.

But there's one thing about 16-month-old Ellie that sets her apart from others. She never gets full when she eats.

"It's really hard to say no when they ask for more food," explains Susanne Szabo-MacDonald, Ellie's mom.

But saying "no" is a key treatment for people diagnosed with the rare genetic condition called Prader-Willi Syndrome, which affects roughly one in 30,000 people.

A person with PWS who isn't watched can literally eat and eat until they die.

A better place Ellie and mom are in a much better place right now than they were this time last year, waiting for a phone call from the doctor to receive her diagnosis.

At first, it didn't seem strange that Ellie was

feeble, rarely ate, and slept nearly 24 hours a day.

She was born 32 weeks into the pregnancy at just three pounds, and doctors thought her behaviour was just "preemie issues."

But Susanne's mother instinct pushed her to dig deeper.

"The hardest part was waiting for her diagnosis," says Susanne, who said it took about eight weeks of waiting and worrying.

When she finally learned the news it came unexpectedly, but she'll remember that moment for the rest of her life.

"They told me life-altering news over the phone," she says with a touch of anger as she recalls the impersonal discussion.

That conversation was followed by the agony of having to walk into the other room and try and explain the bad news to her husband, Jason MacDonald.

"I did have a little bit of a meltdown and I cried," she says. "But, when it was over, when I pulled myself together, I realized that she's just the same as she was five minutes ago before I got the phone call."

Susanne rebounded incredibly quickly. She soon learned there was going to be a walk in Burnaby to raise funds for PWS research and she

jumped at the opportunity ,and has organized a similar event Sept. 22 in Ladner..

That amazes Carol Lee, another Ladner mom who has a 16-year-old daughter with PWS. Carol initially found out about Susanne through Facebook even though they live in the same town.

"I went to check her out, just to see who the crazy lady was," she says half-joking. "Because I can remember the days when we first got a diagnosis and the last thing I would be doing was fundraising. Emotionally, I couldn't have done it."

An overwhelming situation Carol said she and her husband each took a week to grieve when they learned the news. It took her two more weeks to feel ready to even leave the house.

"It's completely overwhelming. You have no idea what the future has in store for you. And it's devastating to find out that the perfect baby you've just given birth to has anything wrong with it."

Carol's daughter, Eliza, is a teenager of average height and weight who is in Grade 11 at Delta secondary. Her very existence inspires hope in Susanne that a child with PWS can grow up to be a perfectly healthy, normal adult.

After sending a few Facebook messages, Carol and Susanne connected and now Eliza and Ellie get along famously. Eliza has been happy to see another person with her condition.

"It's good for me to be able to see a cute little baby and it's good for Susanne to see what life's going to be like 16 years down the road," says Carol.

Despite the rarity of the condition, there are two other people in Ladner with PWS. One is an early 30-something woman whom Carol says has to be watched pretty much like Eliza. She provides another fascinating 16-year glimpse into the future.

Ellie's health has been improving steadily since her stay at BC Children's Hospital from December to April. She has to take a daily injection of growth hormone, which improves brain function and maintains typical growth. She also receives thyroid medication.

Susanne's husband works four days on, four days off, so she gets some help. Jason is a seventhgeneration Ladner resident from the Kirkland family, whose grandmother grew up in the historical Kirkland house on Arthur Drive.

"You have to be really positive because it's easy to get depressed and shut down," she said, adding the doctors were initially pessimistic. Now, she says they marvel at Ellie's progress.

Making great strides Ellie was severely affected by PSW, and doctors said she likely wouldn't feed by herself for two years, walk or talk until three.

Now she does all that and more. Like other children her age she can say "mama" and "dada" and "baba" for bottle.

Susanne now works twice a week for the provincial government, which she says gives her a chance to get away from the 24-hour responsibilities. She calls work her "break."

Although Ellie is doing much better now, she still cries at the end of every meal. Carol knows why.

"Because it's over," she says, explaining people with PWS don't ever get the wonderful satisfaction of feeling full.

Susanne is inspired that Carol doesn't need to lock their fridge or pantry, but that doesn't mean Eliza doesn't need to be watched. And Carol doesn't think she'll ever be truly independent.

Although she's trusted by her parents, Eliza has been known to sneak food on rare occasions. Usually she's so obedient that she'll ask permission to eat a single potato chip outside of the feeding schedule.

"She can't walk around the street by herself because

she will seek out food," she said, explaining some adults with PWS will literally eat until their stomach perforates, which can be fatal.

"That is not going to happen in my lifetime to Eliza."

But Eliza seems to have a good sense of humour about her condition. One time during dinner her father ate a large pizza and calzone and Eliza said, "sometimes I think Daddy has Prader-Willi Syndrome." Everybody stopped eating and started howling with laughter.

Susanne works with a dietician to ensure Ellie gets the calories she needs and has taught her baby sign language to get through some communication problems.

Now, Susanne is focused on funding a cure for PWS. On Saturday, Sept. 22, she's staging a community walk at Harbour Park in Ladner, with the goal of raising $10,000.

She's already raised $6,100 and she's been appreciative of the support people have shown her both on her Facebook page, One Small Step for Ellie, and with donations.

Fortunately, Ellie has a big brother to look up to in three-year-old Joshua.

"I think having a healthy child prepared me for having one with more challenges," says Susanne, adding she met some parents at BC Children's Hospital who struggle with medical issues.

But she said once those children get better they can go home, while Ellie has a condition that will be with her for life. Susanne is determined to change that.

"She's so much stronger than the doctors ever gave her credit for. It's almost like she heard their challenge." adrian@southdeltaleader.com

Annual Day at the Farm event offers unique insight Agriculture is an important part of Delta’s identity, economy, heritage and culture.

Support our farmers – buy local and enjoy the fresh, wonderful produce Delta has to offer!

For some people, especially those living in big cities, they’ve never visited a farm, let alone know how it operates. Yet just a half hour from the bustle of downtown Vancouver you can find some of the most productive soils in all of Canada.

The fertile fields of Delta support a vibrant agricultural community that has been farming since 1868, and you can learn more about it by coming to the 7th annual Day at the Farm event, hosted by the Delta Farmland & Wildlife Trust (DFWT) and Westham Island Herb Farm.

“We want to give people a chance to experience what farming in our community is all about, and then they can make a decision about how much they value farming,” says David Bradbeer, program coordinator at DFWT. This year they will be showcasing crops grown on local farms, including potatoes and other root vegetables, dairy products, blueberries and cranberries.

There will be local farmers attending the event to answer questions about how they manage their farms. Questions such as: What kind of crops are grown on local farms? How are those crops grown, and where do they go after they are harvested? What kind of things are local farmers

farms provide huge open green spaces that are usually maintained without taxpayer dollars.

In addition to farmers being at the event, this year will feature many new activities.

The BC Fresh Potato Dig will give visitors the chance to dig their own potatoes straight from the soil.

And if you fancy yourself a baker, take part in the first-ever Blueberry Pie Contest. All pies must be brought to the main show stage no later than noon and judging will begin at 12:20 p.m.

There will be plenty of exhibits to view, including the Mini-Grassland Setaside and the Cover Crop Demo Garden.

Westham Island Herb Farm will have a diversity

of fresh produce for sale at their farm store, and White Spot’s “On the Go” Food Truck will be serving up hot food, including French fries made from Kennebec potatoes grown in Delta.

The event still features classics such as the Hay Wagon Farm Tour, led by third generation farmer, Gordon Ellis. And the BC Dairy Foundation Mobile Dairy Classroom will be performing live milking demonstrations throughout the day and Ken Bates of Tecarte Farms will be demonstrating Draft Horse Plowing.

Day at the Farm takes place on Saturday, Sept.

8 at Westham Island Herb Farm (4690 Kirkland Road, Delta) from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free.

The new president of the South Delta Rams is drinking in the anticipation of a brand new season of football.

"This is our field of dreams," he says firmly, his passion for the sport evident in his excited tones.

Brumby was a volunteer announcer for the Rams last season and wanted to volunteer again this year. When he found out that Mel Beaton was leaving the position of president, he wanted the job.

"Needless to say, I jumped in with both feet. The water was deep," he admits.

Deep. You might say that about the talent pool. The South Delta Rams Football Club operates five age categories in the Vancouver Mainland Football League (VMFL), from Flag (ages 6-7) to Bantam (ages 14-15).

Last year their Spring Flag team became U12 provincial champions, and their Junior Bantam team won the VMFL championship.

"Once the kids get brought in here our stress is to provide the best environment possible for the kids to learn the sport, experience it," says Brumby.

His son Morgan, 12, plays with the Junior Bantam team.

"The sportsmanship, the camaraderie, it's touching," says Brumby, adding his son's one of the smallest on the team but the Rams welcome all shapes and sizes.

"I told him if you want to save yourself, stay low," he said

laughing.

The cost for registration is $225 for a 10-game season, but Brumby said the kids get to use equipment worth three to four times that much. That's why sponsors are so important to the club.

On Green and Gold Day (Sept. 16), car company Dueck is offering a test drive at Dennison Field. Dueck will donate $25 for each person who takes a test drive, up to a maximum of $5,000.

That kind of money goes a long way to keeping the Rams on the gridiron. And Brumby is determined to keep the club's long tradition going.

‘A low-maintenance lifestyle’

Downsizers finding a home at Edgewater The recent increase in multi-family construction projects is a burgeoning trend. While many people still prefer a single-family home, buyers are flocking to developments that offer apartments or townhomes.

“It’s a low-maintenance lifestyle,” says Vice-President of Sales and Marketing for Fifth Avenue Marketing Cristy Edmonds.

Edgewater, by Barber Creek Developments in South Surrey, is one multi-family development that has seen sales boom since it opened for sale last year. Edmonds says that many of their buyers have been downsizers.

“They don’t need the space anymore,”

she says. “It’s also become more socially acceptable” to live in a condominium or townhouse, plus the perks of no longer having to do your own maintenance.

Edgewater is particularly popular for several reasons. “A project like this won’t be replicated again,” Edmonds says. “It’s one of a kind.” Only five homes now remain in the project.

But what about the privacy that is often inherent in a single-family home?

Though you might be giving up your backyard, many condo developments now include a private balcony or patio with every suite. It will be your own private piece of solitude, even in the middle of the bustling Lower Mainland.

basement storage room and a one-year membership to Modo Car Share with three dedicated vehicles. Along with the car-share program, there are also electric car charging stations and four car wash bays.

The neighbourhood itself is close to several schools, from elementary to post-secondary at Simon Fraser University and the British Columbia Institute of Technology. Restaurants and shopping are within walking distance, including Brentwood Town Centre. Recreation is also within easy reach with a variety of gyms, community centres and other leisure activities.

“SOLO District proves that market strength exists for a strong community concept, which is exactly what Appia ... has created here at Brentwood,” says Wong. “The best developments will counter any negative real estate market trends.”

In fact, buyers lined up for two hours on opening day on July 21.
