presents the 2012 Cranbrook Cupcake Wars Champion Tanya LeClair
Tanya LeClair with the Cupcake Wars Judges
ADVERTORIAL Forty entrants, Âżve months, six judges, and seven rounds. The Cranbrook Cupcake Wars Champion has been announced. On Monday August 20th, 2012; the judges table met for the Âżnal judging. Coming out victorious, was Cranbrook resident Tanya LeClair. Tanya was a clear front runner from the beginning. She impressed judges in the entry round with her simple, yet elegant, Raspberry cupcakes; and won the Âżnal round with her carrot and peanut butter “Pupcakesâ€?. However, Crumbs owner, Danielle Cardozo, said
it was LeClair’s overall abilities throughout the competition that won her the title of Cranbrook Cupcake Wars Champion. “When it came down to the Âżnal two cupcakes, we had great difÂżculty deciding. We were back and forth between the two. We had to look at all of the submissions we had received throughout the competition, from each of the contestants. While Tanya did suffer a bit of a setback in the May judging, overall Tanya’s cupcakes were consistent. She showed us excellence in each creativity, texture, Ă€avor, and use of ingredients.
We were impressed most every time. Tanya arrived with cupcakes in hand, and a beaming smile, as she accepted her reign as Cranbrook’s Cupcake Wars Champion. She thanked the judges by presenting them with a delightfully tasty red velvet cupcake with cinnamon cream cheese. Tanya won over $1000.00 in baking related prizes including a cupcake themed gift bag, professional baking pans, and an airbrush kit worth over $350.00. The judges were delighted to have completed the competition
and crown a winner. “It was fun, but we ate a LOT of cupcakes. I’m not sure I need another one for a while. said Mike Peabody of the Choice Shop. Peabody is one of the six judges who joined the judges table each of the seven rounds. The judges included Danielle Cardozo, owner of Crumbs Cakery; Sandy Smith, realtor with East Kootenay Royal Lepage (PREC); Mike Peabody and Joey Sandberg, owners of The Choice Shop on Baker; and Becky McArthur & Tanya’s Final Winning Cupcake of The Paw Shop’s Robyn Hansen, owners of Furry Friends Final Round: Carrot & Peanut Butter MJ’s Floral & Gifts. “Pupcake

What Do You Want in Your Soil? As the growing season is coming to an end and gardeners are harvesting their produce and pulling spent plants, it is also a great time to check the quality of your soil. One of the things you will want to check is the pH level of your soil. The pH level is measured on a scale from 1 to 14 and describes whether a soil is alkaline or acidic. Some people also use the expression that their soil might be too sweet or sometimes too sour. A neutral soil is indicated on the scale as a 7, a very acidic soil has a lower number and a very alkaline soil has a higher number. The level of pH is important, because a plant cannot utilize the nutrients found in the soil if the pH is out of balance and may not grow very well. There are some relatively accurate test kits on the market that help you determine the pH of the soil yourself. You can also send a soil sample to a lab for analysis. The laboratory tests are very accurate and will also measure the percentage of organic matter in the garden and the exact amount of nitrogen, phosphorous, and potash present in your soil. By doing a soil test, you will know what you need to add in order to improve your garden soil. Most soils in this area are alkaline and sulphur and organic matter is used to help correct this situation, lime is added to a soil that is too acidic. Fall is the best time to add organic matter to your soil. Organic matter consists of plant and animal material that is in the process of decomposing. Organic matter is what makes the soil rich and healthy. By adding organic matter to sandy soil, you improve the ability of the soil to retain water. If you add it to clay soil, you loosen the soil and make it more crumbly. Organic matter also adds carbon to the soil, which promotes the growth of beneficial bacteria, and acts as a plant food, increasing the likelihood of hearty plants. Digging in your compost is a great way to add organic matter as well as putting your garbage to work. Peat moss, manure and composted bark are all beneficial additives as well and will enhance your soil and ready your garden for next year’s growing season. Have you ever heard of cover crops? Cover crops are an old mulching and fertilizing technique that is now becoming more and more popular, but is still widely underused. Cover crops are sometimes referred to as living mulches and are an alternative to mulching your garden plot with bark, leaves, or other conventional mulches in order to protect your soil for the winter. Two very common cover crops are fall rye and fall garden legume mix. The idea behind cover crops is that, once your garden is cleaned out, you simply sow your cover crop seeds and watch them grow. Then in the springtime, you till the entire crop under. Once tilled into the garden, the cover crops fertilize the soil, so many people also refer to them as green manure crops. Cover crops can help prevent soil erosion, add organic matter, increase microorganisms, stabilize and add nutrients, help control pests and diseases, and suppress weeds. If you treat your soil well, it will treat your plants well. Till next time... happy gardening. Submitted by Kerstin

YOUR CITY....WORKING FOR YOU! Changes to City Garbage Collection Now In Effect
The City of Cranbrook will now only collect a maximum of three (3) garbage receptacles per week per household. The changes took effect on September 1, 2012 after City Council approved the amendment to the Solid Waste Collection bylaw at their regular meeting of August 13. The intent of the amendments to the bylaw is to further encourage recycling and composting thereby reducing the amount of garbage required to be disposed of each week. The Solid Waste Collection and Disposal bylaw also limits the size of receptacles (either containers or bags) to 100 litres and receptacles cannot weigh more than 20 kilograms each. Garbage containers are to have a water tight cover and smooth rim, must be in good structural and sanitary condition and have fixed handles. Plastic bags are to be securely tied closed at the top and be strong enough to withstand normal handling and lifting. For more information about solid waste pickup, your scheduled collection dates or to review the Solid Waste Collection and Disposal bylaw, visit the City of Cranbrook website at www.cranbrook.ca, click on the ‘Residents’ tab, and click ‘Solid Waste Pickup’.
14th Avenue South Construction Work Expected for Six Weeks
The City of Cranbrook wishes to advise the public using 14th Avenue South, from 10th Street South to 13th Street South, will experience short traffic disruptions beginning on Monday August 13, 2012. Once full construction starts, there will be road some closures in effect; primarily 14th Avenue South from 12th Street South to 13th Street South for approximately six weeks. BA Blacktop and crews contracted by the City of Cranbrook will be continuing with the road improvement work started in 2011. Motorists are asked to please follow any detours in place as directed for the duration of the work. The City of Cranbrook apologizes for any inconvenience and appreciates the patience of residents as these temporary traffic closures are in place.

The free ride comes with a catch: each passenger must be carrying a reusable or recycled bag, be traveling to and from downtown Cranbrook and indicate to their transit driver that they are attending the Cranbrook Farmers’ Market. The City of Cranbrook is funding the free rides for all 16 Saturday markets. The Cranbrook Farmers’ Market runs 9 am to 1 pm, but the free bus rides are from 8:30 am to 1:30 pm. That gives early birds and last minute shoppers’ equal access to transit time. Trips to and from the Cranbrook Farmers’ Market via BC Transit are for non-transferable passes only. This innovative partnership between BC Transit and the City of Cranbrook also achieves five specific goals identified in the community’s long term sustainability plan – “Connecting to our Future.”For more information please visit – www.bctransit. com.

Helping with the pressures felt by first time high school students Children who were used to being the biggest in the schoolyard will suddenly be the youngest ones when this new school year begins. Starting high school is a big step that can create a great deal of stress in children. Here are a few ways to help them prepare for the big day. First of all, make sure that they know what’s in store for them. Parents can sometimes pinpoint what may be troubling their children just by
talking about their new school. For example, they might be worried about getting lost or not making friends. They might just be having anxiety about using a new combination padlock! By letting them talk about their fears, parents can often help their children resolve such worries. You could suggest visiting the school, Âżnding friends who will be or are already attending the same school, and
practicing opening a new combination lock. Discuss your children’s worries with them, but try to discourage them from becoming obsessive. Making a fuss will only increase stress levels. All the same, make sure your children feel comfortable bringing up their concerns whenever they need to and that they know they can count on their parents for support. Starting high school also means increased
independence. Children who might never have had to manage much responsibility will now have to organize their own agendas and course notes, plan when to hand in work, and manage their time between classes and at lunchtime. To help children prepare for this new independence, entrust them with a few chores around the home. That way, they will learn to manage their time and make choices by themselves. PHOTO SUBMITTED

Give your child their own workspace storage boxes, a small bookcase, and a container for writing utensils. A corkboard is also a great idea, and your children will love to decorate it with favourite photos and odds and ends. Ask your children to help you in the choice of these accessories. Last but not least, choose a space where distractions will be limited.
Getting your child past the first day jitters On the ¿rst day of the new school year William makes it very clear that he wants to stay home. He complains, he cries, he’s pale, and he suddenly develops stomach cramps. He goes back to bed and curls up in a little ball. How to react? If this is their ¿rst day of school, children are probably feeling anxious and afraid. You as a parent are probably feeling torn, too:

Everyone likes to have their own space to work in and your children are no different. Any quiet, well-lit area should work. Setting up a special place to do homework is very practical and can be done without spending a fortune. Children with an organized space in which to work have better concentration and learn more easily. It also helps for them to have a sense of ownership in the space they will be using to do their work. Choose a quiet room that is well-lit. If you decide to use a corner of a bedroom, try to separate the work area from the rest of the room to prevent children from doing their homework on the bed. If space is limited, choose a folding table ¿xed to the wall, but check to make sure that the surface area is big enough to accom-
modate text books, exercise books, and laptop. Window blinds or curtains may be needed in order to prevent natural light from reÀecting on a computer screen. Choose a chair carefully: if possible, it should be comfortable and adjustable. Investing a bit extra in an of¿ce chair is worthwhile, as
it will likely be used for years to come. A moveable, variable intensity reading light is also advisable. Position it on the right of the desk for a left-handed child and to the left for one who is right-handed. The work area should always be well-organized. Limit any disorder by equipping it with

sending your child off to school in this state can feel like abandoning them to strangers. This is an occasion for parents to listen, encourage, and be strong. Unless you are prepared to switch to homeschooling, your children need to understand that going to school is not negotiable. Show them that you understand what they
are experiencing without being overprotective or trying to minimize their feelings. Reassure them that they are probably not the only ones who are stressed this morning, that many of their classmates will be feeling the same way. Talk about all the advantages of school, point out their past efforts and successes, and then discuss how the situation they are worrying about can be resolved.

Mary Gall 1921 - 2012 It is with great sorrow that the family of Mary Gall announces her passing on Thursday, August 30, 2012 at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital in Cranbrook at 90 years of age. Mary was born on November 30, 1921 in Dubrova, Czechoslovakia. She was the oldest of five girls. Mary came to Canada with her mom and her sister Emily in 1929. Mary met Charles Gall and they were married in Nampa, Alberta and moved to a farm in the area soon after the children were born. They remained on the farm homestead until 1978 when they retired to Summerland, British Columbia. In 1995 they moved to Cranbrook and have been here ever since. Mary was a very sociable person. She enjoyed Sunday mass and brunch, Tuesday night cards at the condo, volunteering at the Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Store on Thursday afternoons and the Shopping Program on Friday afternoons, and she was an active member of the CWL for over 50 years. Mary is survived by her son Ken, daughter Judy, three sisters Rene, Elnore and Lillian, two grandchildren Chris (Kelly) and their children Avery and Ella, Kendra (Curtis) and their children Sydney and Noah. She was predeceased by her parents John and Eva Gejdos, her husband Charles Gall and her sister Emily Harper. A funeral mass for Mary will be held at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Cranbrook on Friday, September 7, 2012 at 1:00 pm. Her Interment will be in Westlawn Cemetery. Those wishing to make a memorial donation in her honour may do so to: A Clear View c/o East Kootenay Foundation For Health, 13 - 24th Avenue North, Cranbrook, British Columbia, V1C 3H9.
