A free-event offers people of all ages the opportunity to meet “Lil’ Dude” the American Kestrel and “Mickey” the Harris Hawk through Raptors Ridge, a familyrun wildlife conservation program based out of Maple Ridge.

“I see this as a family event for the community,” said Erin Handy, program coordinator at KAST. “It’s something you can do with your kids and it’s educational, but it’s still fun.”

The Kootenay Association for Science and Technology (KAST) teamed up with Rossland’s Golden City Days to diversify the annual fall fair, along with two other unique events through Growing and Learning Opportunities With Science (GLOWS). The group invited two professional bird handlers

Denver on Sept.9.

“Science is not an intimidating thing,” Handy explained “It’s all around us and learning about science is important.”

Each event includes lectures about how to identify different species of birds, what they eat and how their roles influence our eco-system and agriculture.

“We called a lot of people, but Karen had the highest degree of enthusiasm,” Handy noted, alluding to Raptor’s Ridge cofounder Karen Kamstra.

Raptors Ridge Birds of Prey is a unique family business that boasts a professional conservation centre providing care for birds of prey in a natural habitat.

It includes interactive workshops and public educational programs at its Maple

roughly 30 raptors and transformed the family’s home into Raptors Ridge Birds of Prey.

“We aim to promote an exciting educational experience giving an opportunity to learn, develop and acquire a fuller understanding of ecological interaction between humans and birds of prey,” Kamstra said.

But flat-footed Rosslanders can celebrate Golden City Days in other ways.

Rossland will be celebrating 40 years of community spirit with a series of cool events scheduled to take place between Sept. 7 and 9.

Highlights of the weekend include the fall fair, a pancake breakfast, children’s games, a climbing wall, roller derby, food and craft vendors, the Golden City Grind and a parade.

A stable local economy has buoyed the city’s real estate market despite the continued downward shift in unit sales and prices across the Kootenays, says a local agent.

Deanne Lockhart of Century 21 marked the strength and solidity of the city’s major employers—Teck Trail Operations and Interior Health Authority—as insulators against a market drop out now gripping the East and West Kootenay.

Trail literally remains an island in 2012 with an $8,278 rise in average sales prices across the board—according to figures recently released by the Kootenay Real Estate Board (KREB).

Only four other West Kootenay communities (out of 15) recorded marginal rises in average sales prices: Castlegar, Nakusp, Warfield and Salmo.

Lockhart said the city was doing “pretty well� with Teck continually hiring lots of people, and those people then looking for places to live. “Our market doesn’t fluctuate like a lot of the other markets do,� she explained. “We do see some fluctuation

but not to the degree like other areas ‌ because we have some excellent employers.�

The average sale price of a single-family detached home, also called a singledetached dwelling or separate house, in Trail in 2012 rose from $159,720 in 2011 to $167,998—a five per cent increase.

The jump was greater in the rural region around Trail, with the average sale price of a detached home rising from $223,666 to $263,833 in 2012. It was also the same in Warfield where the average rose from $201,861 to $228,000.

City calls for water management plan

The city is calling on the province and BC Hydro to create a water use management plan for both rivers flowing into the Silver City to avoid 2012’s flooding fiasco that caused hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages to City and private property.

Councillor Gord DeRosa said after a meeting Monday with BC Hydro that they will be having a “very serious� discussion with BC Hydro at the upcoming Union of B.C. Municipalities convention in Victo-

ria in late September.

The City will be meeting with the minister responsible for BC Hydro, Rich Coleman, to review the situation, as well as hearing from BC Hydro officials themselves on what they have to say on the matter.

DeRosa was concerned the Crown corporation was negligent in considering the effect of the two rivers—the Columbia and the Kootenay— meeting and coming into Trail by not having an over arching water use management plan for territory south of their confluence. “The dams (upstream) were built to avert flooding. Well, we flooded this year,� said DeRosa. “Being at the south end of the (Columbia) basin, a lot of the decisions are made north of us but they affected us dramatically this year.

We need to know down here that the right decisions are being made above us.�

He said although there is a water use management plan for both the Kootenay and the Columbia rivers—to mitigate water level effects in their bordering communities—there is no plan in effect for when both rivers meet and come through Trail.

The Fall Fair which runs alongside Golden City Days is quickly approaching. The event is scheduled for Saturday Sept. 8.

The Fall Fair Organizing Committee has released a brochure highlighting the events of the fair.

The fair is known for its competitions in baking and vegetable growing, as well as great activities for the kids. “I’d like to encourage people to enter things they’ve grown in their garden or crafts that they or their children have done,� said organizer Ursula Stephens.

She said all the usual events will be there, with a few added things. Competitions, children’s events, the flowers, the vegetables and the baking and things.

They have also added some sewing categories for the kids, because of interest shown from kids

last year. Kids knitting and crocheting were also added.

In the food and drink category, the beer and wine competition has been eliminated. “We haven’t had a lot of entries over the last year and we have to arrange for judges and that kind of thing� she said. “We decided to forgo that section for this year.�

She added that in the past they sometimes received only two entries, making the competition a bit lacking for depth.

This year they changed some of the quantities of the entries in the baking portion. “We used to have that you had to have six cookies or six squares, but now we have it down to four,� she said. “So that things are more affordable for things to enter and they won’t have to be dismayed by having to have four perfect muffins. So we’re trying to make things

more accessible for people.�

The fair will have a number of regular booths as well as some new information booths. The Rossland Museum, the 4H club, Kootenay Columbia Trails Society and Friends of the Rossland Range will all be represented at the Fall Fair.

Kootenay Academy of Arts, Science and Technology (KAST) will be bringing in a display called Raptor’s Ridge Birds of Prey. “It is making the tour of the Kootenays over the next little while,� she said. “They are stopping at the arena for the fall fair.�

The model trail society will also be there with its historical reproduction of Rossland in the miniature.

An area of Spokane St. is closed off outside the arena outdoor activities. “We’ve been able to purchase gazebo type awnings thanks to a

grant form the Columbia Basin Trust,� she said.

There will be a petting zoo outside and new this year there will be a hand washing station.

There is also face painting for kids.

A lot of new things are planned as well as a lot of the old standbys.

Entries will be taken on Friday Sept.

7 from noon until 7 p.m. Judging is Saturday morning. doors are open to the public following the parade until 6 p.m.

Laurie Karn, who along with Stephens and Bobbi LaFond, organizes the fair noted the importance of the grant funding.

Karn said the committee wanted to acknowledge the contributions from the CBT and RDKB who have assisted through the communities initiative funding program.

The Rossland Golden City Days Committee is excited to bring you a weekend of fun and entertainment on September 7 – 9, celebrating 40 years of our traditional heritage festival, and we sure hope you’re planning to join us.

The climbing wall, craft vendors, children’s games, and food booths with burgers, sausages, hot dogs, kettle corn, and cold drinks, will all be located in the arena parking lot. Mountain FM and EZ Rock will be on hand to provide some music, balloons, and treats.

ley Stage entertainment includes up and coming singer, Laela Heidt, the ever-popular Golden City Fiddlers, Mirage Middle Eastern Dance Ensemble, sassy Salsa dancing with Amber and Ory, and “Roy Has Fire,� a youth band playing progressive/alternative rock.

At 7 p.m., Friday in the RSS Auditorium, you will be treated to such local talent as Norm Worsfold, Jason Thomas, Tim Bourchier and The Fabulous Chairs, Don Birtch, Dawn Graham, Kyla Hanna, Leanne Harrison and family, and the Golden City Fiddlers. None other than stand-up comedian, Tara Holmes, of “Hell on Heels� fame, will close out the evening with a healthy dose of

The slow-pitch tournament will run all weekend at various Rossland ballparks.

Weinberger throws out first pitch at GFI. With the Grand Forks International baseball tournament underway in Grand Forks, it was fitting that a winner threw out the ceremonial opening pitch.

Richard Weinberger took bronze in the 10K open water marathon event at the London 2012 Summer Olympics and was in town to promote supplement/training company Athlete Illuminati; he was also given the honour.

his experience at London, Weinberger said that it was very memorable.

“It was awesome.

The experience was unreal. I succeeded over 17 years of competitive swimming and four years of competitive open water swimming and everything just came down to one moment,” he reminisced.

“It was unbelievable. My family was there, my coach, all of Swimming Canada, all the teammates, I got to meet all the athletes that were there; it was crazy.”

But while swimming was at the top of

the list for Weinberger at London 2012, he said that he got to enjoy life outside of the pool too.

“After my race, I got to go around the city a little bit. When I wasn’t busy with interviews, I was around checking out the city,” he reminisced.

As for baseball, Weinberger hinted that it wasn’t a sport he would be getting into anytime soon.

“I’m a swimmer,” the bronze medal winner said with a laugh.

“I’ll leave it to (the players) but throwing out the first pitch was fun,” he went on to say.

or skateboards.

Helmets must fit properly and children should learn to secure the chin strap every time they go for a ride. * Help your children pack their backpacks.

Elementary students should not carry more than 10 per cent of their body weight and secondary students should avoid exceeding 15 per cent of their weight.

For example, if your child is 80 pounds, he shouldn’t carry more than eight pounds (the equivalent of a pair of shoes, a snack, a drink and two to three textbooks).

Parents of Primary Students: * Practise a safe route to and from school with your children. * Join an existing Walking School Bus or Bicycle Train, or start your own with other parents in your neighbourhood. The KootenayBoundary region is a hotbed of entrepreneurial spirit, talent and creativity that continues to hatch innovative small businesses.

While great ideas and enterprise are here in abundance, the legal steps required to translate ideas into a fully operational and

functional businesses can be a major hurdle. Launching this September, the “Ask An Expert” program kicks off, focussing initially on assisting Kootenay-Boundary entrepreneurs andstart-ups with free legal advice sessions.

“We deal with a host of immensely talented people who have excellent business ideas and are

very good at what they do,” explained KAST’s Executive Director Kelvin Saldern.

“One of the common challenges we hearfrom start-ups is that the legal aspect of the business is not their strength and can be challenging. As an organization with a strong focus on assisting and accelerating entrepreneurial growth in the region,

implementing the “Ask An Expert” program, starting withlegal services, was a natural fit for KAST to help provide one more small boost to emerging local companies.”

Ask An Expert: LEGAL is a partnership project between the Kootenay Association for Science and Technology (KAST), Community Futures

of Greater Trail, Community Futures Central Kootenay and Leon Pigott of Pigott & Company, designed to ease legal barriers for entrepreneurs and young companies by providing free access to expert advice.

Through the program, small businesses in the region will be able to tap into the skills and experience of Leon Pigott, Bar-

rister & Solicitor, on topics ranging from business structure decisions, purchasing an existing business, organizing and structuring their business, to intellectual property protection and more.

“I was motivated to start offering the Business Law Clinics because my experience in my practice is that many start-up

and small business owners leave getting legal advice too late in the process,” said Pigott. “Often, some early advice from a lawyer would help to build a strong foundation for growth. A Salute to (truck) Drivers Old & New SUBMITTED

National Trucking Week 2012:

By Louise Yako, President & CEO The Province of B.C. has officially recognized the importance of the trucking industry by proclaiming September 2 to 8, 2012, National Trucking Week in B.C. In honour of motor carriers and drivers for their vital contribution to life in this province, we’d like to share a brief story from the soon-to-be released Trucking in British Columbia: An Illustrated History.

The book contains numerous true-life stories illustrating the mettle required of the “old-timers� who tackled B.C.’s early roads, “winding ribbons of dirt and gravel carved out of the mountainsides.� Their courage and entrepreneurial spirit laid the foundation for a thriving B.C. economy, fueled by (and fueling) the growth of communities throughout the province. Today’s carriers continue the tradition of providing an indispensable service that underpins our modern lifestyle.

Here’s the story of one pioneer: Bert Wise was a 19-year-old sheet metal worker in Vancouver when the Great Depression struck. Unable to find a job in his trade, he decided to go into business for himself.

He acquired a Ford one-ton and began picking up odd jobs around town hauling coal and wood and moving furniture; for a while he carried gasoline for Domin-

Wise got into distance hauling when he was offered sixty dollars to move a family from Vancouver to Oyama, south of Vernon. On the first day he got as far up the Fraser Canyon as Boston Bar. After an overnight he drove to Spences Bridge, took a sharp right turn to Merritt, then continued via Kamloops and Vernon to his destination. After off-loading the furniture in Oyama, Wise stopped at a cannery in Ashcroft on the way back to the coast and took on a load of canned tomatoes destined for Vancouver.

There was lots of competition as trucking seemed to be an attractive option for anyone who could drive and lay their hands on a vehicle. “We used to leave Vancouver with our gas tanks full,� recalled Wise, “a fortyfive-gallon drum of gas on the back end and a long piece of hose to fill the tanks with later. We packed a bar of soap, a towel,

tine of the long-haul trucker during the 1930s, though pretty obviously a predictable routine was not something on which these pioneers of the road could rely. Driving a motor vehicle is not usually thought to be a physically demanding job but in the early days of trucking it was that and more. To begin with, trips were long.

It could take several days to make a run to the Okanagan and back again, depending on the weather.

There was no power steering so it took a strong pair of arms to wheel a truck over the winding, rutted roads that passed for highways, and an intense concentration to watch for the multiple hazards that awaited the unwary. Suspension was minimal and the solid rubber tires had very little bounce.

It was the rare driver

who did not develop back problems from the constant slamming and jostling.

And it was cold, at least in winter. Cabs had no heating, or defrosting. Drivers used to jam a piece of wood under the hood to keep it partly open so that heat from the engine would wash up over the windshield and keep it frost-free.

After stopping for the night, the last chore was to drain the radiator so that it wouldn’t freeze and crack; of course, it had to be refilled in the morning.

Black ice was a seasonal hazard. Drivers learned from experience to use their gears to descend a twisty downgrade instead of their brakes.

Boaters take action to stop the spread of invasive species.

Boaters around the province are being asked to participate in an on-line survey conducted by the Invasive Species Council of BC (ISCBC). It is part of the provincial Clean, Drain, Dry initiative that rolled out earlier this spring.

Didymo first appeared in British Columbia in 1989 in central Vancouver Island rivers and quickly spread across the province to the Bulkley, South Thompson, Kettle, Columbia and Kootenay Rivers. alienspecies.royalbcmuseum.ba.ca

The two-year Clean, Drain, Dry program is designed to help stop the introduction and spread of invasive species in B.C. In year one, the Council is hoping to improve future programming by learning more about boaters’ attitudes and behaviors.

Accordingly, the online boat-use survey is a tool to obtain this information. All boaters are encouraged to fill out and submit the survey. Participating boaters will be entered into a draw to win a prize.

“We want to encourage as many people who own a boat and enjoy recreating on our lakes in British

Canada to host 2013 IPC World Swimming Championships LONDON, UK CNW/ - The International Paralympic Committee (IPC), the global governing body of the Paralympic Movement, announced on Sept. 4 that Canada will be the host country for the 2013 IPC Swimming World Championships next August.

While the host city is yet to be confirmed, Swimming Canada CEO Pierre Lafontaine says that

he is excited to bring another major international swimming event to Canada. “Over the years, Canada has had great success at hosting international swimming events,� said Lafontaine. “Bringing IPC Swimming World Championships for the first time to North America will be a great opportunity to showcase the best para-swimmers in the world. We are

delighted that Canada will play host to the 2013 IPC Swimming World Championships, the sixth edition of the event. With a seven-day program that includes 180 medal events across 14 classifications, it will be a fantastic opportunity to showcase Paralympic Sport in North America between Paralympic Games years.�

Education/Health New health-education seats to be available in the Kootenays Ministry of Advanced Education CRESTON/INVERMERE/TRAIL/ CASTLEGAR - Future health professionals in the East and West Kootenay regions will benefit from additional student spaces at College of the Rockies, Selkirk College and the Justice Institute of British Columbia to train health-care professionals to provide the high-quality health care B.C. families deserve.

The B.C. government is providing $236,000 in one-time funding to College of the Rockies for 16 student spaces at the Creston campus and 16 student spaces at the Invermere campus in the health care assistant program for 2012-13. Health care assistant graduates provide frontline care in a variety

of institutional and community settings, including both home support agencies and residential care facilities.

Selkirk College will receive $176,500 in one-time funding for 18 student spaces at the Trail (and West Kootenay) campus in the health care assistant program, also for 2012-13. In addition, part of this funding

will allow for up to 24 nursing students to take an inter-professional practice education course focusing on leadership and research to promote the health of patients, and explore emerging trends and health issues nationally and internationally.

Additionally, the B.C. government is providing $138,400 in one-time funding to

the Justice Institute of B.C. for 15 part-time student spaces to be offered in Trail for 2012-13. These seats will support the BC Ambulance Service’s paramedic recruitment and staffing needs.

This funding is part of an almost $2.4 million investment to support an additional 261 students in health-care programs at nine colleges, universities and institutions in the province.

One-time funding to improve access to health-education programs helps to meet immediate and pro-

jected employment needs in the healthcare field throughout the province.

British Columbia’s post-secondary system is helping to provide faster, safer and better health care for individuals and families in British Columbia by ensuring students in the healthcare professions have the skills and training they need to succeed in the future.

“First response health care is vital to all communities,” says Bill Bennett, MLA for Kootenay East. “What we’re doing here is identifying present

and future employment needs while making our region safer for everyone.

This is good for the studying individuals, it’s good for the economy, and it gives us some piece of mind.

It’s a great funding announcement for everyone.”

Nelson’s John McKinnon returns this year with a sculpture markedly different from last year’s funky, frenetic entry. Somehow it seems in keeping with the artist and the man.

‘Stealing Apples’ is a cheeky tip of the hat to boyhood hijinks, and you get the feeling McKinnon’s been involved in a few in his day. A young lad stands balancing on a fence post, one foot in the air as he strains an outstretched hand to reach more of the elusive unseen fruit.

In his other hand two successfully plucked apples rest, but he’s not quite finished yet. Teetering precariously, the forbidden thrill and challenge at hand motivates and occupies him completely. It is an appealing, inviting work – the excitement, the potential of being caught in the act and the agony of not being quite able to immediately grasp the reward are all nicely realized.

McKinnon’s whimsical entry is again predominantly metal – as was last year’s exuberant ‘Better Living Through Chemistry’.

Where that piece was all bright colours and abstract in form, ‘Stealing Apples’ is generally figurative and monochrome, the apples provide stellar contrast to the boy. While steel and bronze are not necessarily his preferred medium, McKinnon is always switching and adapting, interchanging base materials as he sees fit depending on his vision.

another. Though I rove about considerably, I consider myself primarily a stone sculptor.”

His sculptures, not only monumental stone works but smaller, more delicately stylized ones too, are found throughout his hometown, the Kootenays and across the country. He has executed commissions in stone, metal, mixed media, ceramic and bronze for a variety of clients in every part of Canada.

From corporations in downtown Calgary office towers to school yards, from parks to municipal and institutional facilities, McKinnon has created beautiful, lasting sculptures that add immeasurably to every setting.

He’s particularly proud of his ever expanding sculpture garden on his acreage outside of Nelson. There you’ll find not only his sculptures but those of his peers and favourite artists he’s collected along the way, sprinkled across eight acres.

A true renaissance man, his artistic career highlights are diverse: teaching and learning with Inuit carvers, lecturing in southern educational centres, printmaking, commercial ventures and carving gravestones, to name a few. Ever youthful at heart, McKinnon goes with the flow. Pilfering the occasional apple from a neighbour’s yard would seem like a natural thing to do, or at least capture the act enticingly as he’s done with ‘Stealing Apples’.
