North Island gets the Royal treatment Black Press PORT HARDY— A high tea event crowned this August’s Jubilee celebrations.

The month of August was decreed Diamond Jubilee Month on the North Island as the residents took advantage of a series of community events to honour the 50th anniversary of the Queen’s coronation.

In Coal Harbour, residents gathered for an afternoon tea and dance on August 12, with guests creating and sporting fascinators while enjoying a cuppa and, of course, cucumber sandwiches. Once suitably refreshed, guests were treated to foxtrot and quickstep lessons before moving outside for a very British tradition— a cheese-rolling contest.

In the English event, huge crowds are drawn to the

Perhaps we’ll see a North Islander put his advice to use at Wimbledon in the near future.

Some fishing closures come into affect this month; Halibut closes midnight September 9th and Lingcod and Rockfish, including Yelloweye, closes midnight September 30th. On the Campbell River the bulk of anglers who fly fish are fishing the fast water located between the 2 bridges. Last week pinks were taking the fly on a regular basis and the fish are quite dark this time of year. Some pools are fishing good on dry flies on the Quinsam River. This is a great catch and release river that is busy this time of year with fishermen coming in from all over the world.

Plan to attend the free fishing fun derby at Roberts Lake Saturday September 22nd. This is a first time event hosted by Lorna Duncan. Fishing is from Dawn til 5pm with free hotdogs, chili and lemonade for all who attend. Fishing has been good along the wall and north end of the lake. I will be hosting the derby and look forward to meeting anglers from the area who will attend the derby.

Valley girl on a crusade to protect barn owls Erin Haluschak Black Press COMOX VALLEY — Her plan has gone to the birds, but Laramie Ferguson said it is exactly what she had in mind.

Ferguson, a fourthyear conservation biology student at Simon Fraser University, has created a project to aid in the conservation of raptors, particularly barn owls, in the Comox Valley.

The Valley-raised student said the idea began when she started a course project focusing on a conservation action of her choosing.

“My love for birds started in first year when we had to bird watch. I really like it, and then I took a falconry course a year ago,” said Ferguson.

“I learned that owls and other raptors are

To help recover the barn owl population, Ferguson created 20 nest boxes that will be distributed throughout

materials from local hardware stores and students from Mark Isfeld, G.P. Vanier, Cumberland Junior and Lake Trail Secondary schools aided in the construction.

This week, Ferguson is placing the boxes in various locations around the area, primarily agricultural areas with large, grassy pastures in barns about 15 to 20 feet off the ground.

Ferguson will take two boxes with her to Vancouver to have two wildlife cameras

installed, which were donated by the Hancock Wildlife Foundation.

Little black box convicts man of manslaughter Q. You know about the “black box,” or flight data recorder, on airplanes, for reconstructing details of accidents. But what about the black box in your car?

A. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that 85 per cent of new vehicles are equipped with an event data recorder (EDR), says Willie D. Jones in “IEEE Spectrum” magazine.

This nondescript box, about the size of a deck

of cards, can provide a rich record for police, courts, and insurance on how fast you were driving, when you hit the brakes, and whether you were wearing a seat belt.

Case in point: In 2006, after a vehicle struck and killed a 15-year-old pedestrian in a crosswalk, it was estimated that the driver was travelling at roughly 90 kilometres per hour in a 72 km/h zone, allowing him to plead guilty to the lesser offence

of hit and run rather than vehicular manslaughter. Later, though, authorities discovered that his GMC Yukon had an EDR showing that it had actually been going 122 km/h. The box further revealed that the driver applied the brakes only from 2.1 to 1.3 seconds before he hit the pedestrian.

With that evidence, the prosecutor withdrew the plea agreement and proceeded to trial on the more serious
