ffordable housing is being planned for a portion the Tsawwassen First Nation's new residential development.

Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver (HFH) and TFN has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that will see up to eight affordable family homes built within the TFN community.

"We had a real hard time finding affordable housing for the past 10 years so we're quite excited by this opportunity," said TFN Chief Kim Baird.

She said there's been talks for a number of years but it's been challenging working around the issues of getting HFH on First Nation land.

The MOU follows discussions held over the past few months, including a community meeting in June where TFN members were briefed

on the Habitat for Humanity family-partner model.

“We felt the Habitat for Humanity model would be a great one for our community as it would provide TFN members with the opportunity to volunteer and learn valuable skills on a home-construction site,” said Doug Raines, Chief Administrative Officer of TFN. Ha b i t a t Fo r Hu m a n i t y Greater Vancouver CEO Tim Wake said other HFH affiliates across Canada have achieved great success in working with First Nations on improving family housing in their communities.

Like other First Nation communities, Baird said creating new housing has been one of the biggest challenges facing the former Indian Band over the past 20 years.

"Most of our housing starts have been done by individuals, which provides a huge gap for families who need affordable housing," she said. "So, we

B.C. Ferries will scrap a total of 80 round-trip sailings connecting Tsawwassen with Swartz Bay and Duke Point starting this fall and winter in a bid to cut costs.

The service reduction on the major route will impact periodic afternoon sailings on Fridays and Sundays, as well as some Saturday morning sailings.

“We certainly have the enough capacity (to carry all passengers) with the sailings we will sail,” said Deborah Marshall, executive director of public affairs.

Regular odd-hour service will continue, and the reduction will only impact some even-hour sailings.

Marshall explained the cuts will focus on those sailings that are considered “extra.”

Two other major routes—Horseshoe Bay to Departure Bay, and Horseshoe Bay to Duke Point—will also see fewer sailings.

A decision on service levels to Gulf Islands destinations is expected to go before public hearings with provincial government officials sometime this fall, Marshall said.

The only routes that may be affected from Tsawwassen in that case would be the Queen of Nanaimo’s sailings to the Southern Gulf Islands.

TFN elections on Sept. 5 Tsawwassen First Nation is conducting its second general election under the new, post-Treaty governance structure, which was established April 3, 2009.

Incumbent Kim Baird is running for Chief again against 22-year-old artist Bryce Williams, who was featured in the South Delta Leader's 30 under 30 list in 2010.

Tsawwassen Members will elect 12 members to the Legislature, with the elected chief serving as the 13th member. The four members with the most votes will sit on the Executive Council.

The election date is Sept. 5, with advance voting by mail-in ballot available until the polling station closes.

The polling station is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on voting day. Counting begins immediately thereafter and results will be made public that evening.

says Davies. Toigo could live in Vancouver where he'd find a little more privacy, but Davies says he chooses to live under the microscope and does quite well under that pressure.

Best place to walk: Beach Grove to Centennial Beach.

Davies says it's just a beautiful walk with wonderful seaside houses of glorious colours.

Best place to eat: Kon Thai Restaurant.

Although there are certainly fancier places to dine, Davies says Kon Thai is the best place to eat where few people know about.

"It's a fun place to eat. For an undiscovered find, it's worth a visit."

Best place to be a dog: Anywhere in Tsawwassen.

Davies says sunny Tsawwassen is the most dogfriendly place in the Lower Mainland, whether in town, running on the beach, or visiting shops.

"Dogs live longer in Tsawwassen," he says.

Ladner Storm await BMO results U10 girls team flirt with first place in online competition PHILIP RAPHAEL EDITOR

The votes are in and the deadline has passed.

Now, members of the U10 Ladner Storm girls development soccer team have to sit and wait a result in BMO's Team of the Week contest which will hand out $125,000 to help upgrade a sports field in the winning team's community.

Thanks to the efforts of the team and its supporters casting online votes, the Storm rose dramatically through the ranks in the two-week long competition that included

15 youth teams (aged 7-12) from across Canada.

The Storm started in 13th place and were briefly ranked as high as first place before voting closed Monday (Aug. 27).

The Ottawa Royals Futuro U10 Boys team were in first place for much of the contest. The rankings were pulled from BMO's website early Monday morning.

The winner is scheduled to be announced Sept. 5 at 4 a.m. on CTV's Canada AM show.

While plans have not been finalized yet, team manager Shelley Semler said she is hoping to

gather the team and their families together next Wednesday morning to await the selection of the contest's winner.

In addition to the first place prize, the winning team gets $5,000 to donate to a local charity and tickets to see a game featuring one of Canada's three MLS (Major League Soccer) teams, or Canada's National team.

The Storm's charity is BC Children's Hospital, to which they have already donated $500.

Second and third place teams receive MLS jerseys from their favourite Canadian side.

uring her career with the Delta Police Department Sgt. Sharlene Brooks has experienced a variety of challenges.

She started with dispatch, followed that up with being a uniformed member, was the public spokesperson for the departPhilip ment, returned Raphael to patrol duties a n d n ow i s using her spare time to log hundreds of kilometres on a bike.

It's that latest challenge as part of the annual Cops Fo r Ca n c e r Tour de Valley that she has been wanting to take on for quite some time.

"I think when you're physically able to do something that can make a difference for one of these kids, you do it," said Brooks of the fundraising ride that will take a team of 20 riders—most of them in law enforcement—from Boston Bar to Tsawwassen between Sept.

25 and Oct. 5 to help fund research and a camp for children with cancer.

Joining Brooks from the DPD are Const. Catherine Fiddick, a returning rider, and Const. Elaine Hughes who is embarking on her first tour.

The group will be stopping off in Tsawwassen and Ladner on Sept. 28.

After not being on a bike for many years Brooks said making the adjustment to regular training to endure the 900 km route has been a challenge.

"It's physically demanding, trying to find the time to train while doing shift work," she said. "But when I've hit the wall and I don't want to pedal anymore—and I have gotten to that point on some of our rides—you get that reality check that these kids don't get that choice. They have to keep going.

And so, down goes the pedal. And the next, followed by the next kilometre, and next 10 kilometres."

The drive also comes from being a parent and a grandparent.

"I would take on anything on to keep my kids safe. And when you add grandparenting to that, you get a little softer as you get older," she says. "I'm well and truly blessed to have healthy kids and grandkids and be physically able to do something. And if that means riding a bike for about 900 km to make a difference, that's what I'm going to do."

Meeker helps raise $15k for guide dogs charity Hockey and broadcasting legend has a special attachment to service dogs and the benefits they bring to their owners

Anyone who ever said you slow down with age probably never met four-time Stanley Cup champion and beloved former hockey broadcaster Howie Meeker.

The 88-year-old was at Tsawwassen's Beach Grove Golf Club last Friday (Aug. 24) to help raise money for Ladner-based BC Guide Dogs Services, a charity that trains dogs to help the visually impaired.

"I'm always amazed at the results of a person getting a dog," he said, while awaiting players on the first tee. "They think they've died and gone to heaven."

Meeker, who has raised more than $400,000 for BC Guide Dogs since he was invited to headline the charity tournament which began in 2004, used to play all 18 holes. But now he stays put in order to greet and thank each participant.

"It's made such a difference in people's lives," he said.

BC Guide Dogs Services relies on donations to cover the $37,500 cost of raising a guide dog, which is eventually handed over to visually-impaired people for free.

Meeker was named to the Order of Canada in 2010 in recognition of his contributions to Canadian hockey and charities, including his work with the Campbell River Special Olympics for the past 24 years.

LETTERS A day of jubilation The day couldn’t have been better for the Tsawwassen Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Celebration organized by the Tsawwassen Business Improvement Association (BIA) on Aug. 11 at Diefenbaker Park.

neighbours and even our MP coming to sit beside me and having photographs take n gave me moment-by-moment pleasures. One memorable little boy recognized that my throne is usually used by Santa during our Tsawwassen Christmas season; he asked me if I had any toys for him.

I suggested if he went to the booth where the Celebration Cake was to be cut and presented, he could tell them that the Queen said he could have a little cupcake if he said "please."

Being presented with a beautiful bouquet, plus many little posies given by individual children were delightful events.

Walking and mingling with appreciative, friendly folk, whom I'd never met before, made me recognize just how fortunate I am to live in a beautiful corner of Canada of which I'm proud and happy to be a citizen, just as

much as I am proud and happy to have originated from Godiva's Historical Coventry.

The magic of sharing the celebration with pipers, Scottish dancers and Celtic band with so many wonderful people and to be surrounded and supported by my family produced a kaleidoscope of memories, which I will always treasure.

The crowning experience of the day came when I was watching a group of Union Jack clad women dancing together while "Land of Hope and Glory" played in the background. They opened their circle to me and I joined them.

When the glorious melody actually began, we all sang our hearts out.

That experience sent a visceral thrill coursing throughout my mind, body, and soul. I can only give thanks for a day like no other.

With the TFN, Southlands and Tsawwassen Springs developments, gridlock will be endemic in South Delta.

For all the billions of dollars spent on the SFPR, it does not address the choke-points and the hugely expensive highways scheme is more and more looking like good old B.C. black top politics at work.

and expensive interchanges at Hwy 17 and Hwy 99 have been deliberately overbuilt to suit BC Liberal political needs rather than commuter needs. Despite the massive amount of money spent on the SFPR, the capacity of the tunnel and the Alex Fraser Bridge remain the same, thus gridlock will increase as the population grows.

Political interference and bureaucratic hubris has brought us endemic traffic chaos and it will only get worse. There is no magic bullet, but trying to blacktop one’s way out of gridlock will fail, as it has elsewhere.

Community spirit on display It takes a community to raise a winner.

That could well be the new phrase for those supporting the Ladner U10 Storm girls soccer team in its bid to snag the $125,000 first place prize in BMO's Team of the Week contest which wrapped up online voting Monday night (Aug. 27).

The national contest pitted 15 youth soccer teams against each other for the money, which will be used for upgrading a local sports field. Plus, the winner, which will be named Sept. 5, gets $5,000 for their charity of choice.

Judging by the outpouring of help the Storm got over the two-week voting period, they can already count themselves winners.

With help from family, friends, and strangers, they managed to rise in the daily posted competition rankings from 13th spot all the way to a fading in and out first place when the info was removed about 12 hours before voting was suspended.

The attention the Ladner Storm drew to themselves and the chance to improve a local sports facility is what really counts here.

Yes, a cheque for $125,000 would be the crowning touch.

But anything that focuses the community's spirit to help promote physical fitness for youth is welcomed, especially during times of continued belt-tightening.

Hopefully, that kind of collective will can gather additional momentum since there is often the complaint there's not enough for youngsters to do in South Delta.

They are at loose ends with not enough choices to focus their free time.

In this instance, the community's collective push was impressive. As a group they spoke out by tapping their computer keyboards and tablets to help do a little something about changing things—albeit in the hope of improving one local sports field.

Maybe some more of that is needed to help establish bigger and better facilities so everyone can get in the game, whatever it may be.

The unfortunate thing is the next chance for that comes three years from now.

Port Metro Vancouver is seeking applications from Delta residents to volunteer to fill two community representative positions on the Port Community Liaison Committee – Delta (PCLC). This committee was formed by Port Metro Vancouver as a mechanism for dialogue and communications about port-related issues in Delta.

PCLC is an information sharing forum that works in the spirit of collaboration to bring together municipal, First Nations, industry, Port Metro Vancouver and community interests to discuss developments, identify concerns, provide suggestions and facilitate two-way communication among respective constituencies about port operations and development.

Community representative positions on PCLC include broad and varied interests within the communities of Tsawwassen, Ladner and North Delta with varied experience, both technical and social. PCLC meet an average four to six times per year.

They play a vital role in earth’s life cycle, as pollinators, seed dispersers, nutrient providers and prey. Nearly 80 per cent of Canada’s birds are migratory. The northern boreal forest is the nursery of millions of North America’s birds and their collective life-cycles encompass the full range of latitudes and virtually every climate zone.

The fact that many bird species are in trouble, and their numbers declining, should be a warning to us.

At the recent 5th North American Ornithological Conference in Vancouver, the 1,500 international scientists were challenged to answer the question of why so many migratory birds are declining by taking a whole life cycle perspective.

The Smithsonian Institute’s Peter Marra stressed the need to make the connection from breeding areas to tropical wintering grounds, and all the stopovers between. According to Ian Davidson of Nature Canada, the longer the migration journey, the sharper the species decline. To stop these trends, research and conservation efforts must flow all the way down the flyway.

The Fraser delta is a critical bird migration stopover between Alaska and South America.

When 10-year-old Gloria Turbitt stepped through the door of Atomic Hair Salon in Ladner Village on Saturday morning (Aug. 25) she was heading into unfamiliar territory.

The Ladner Elementary School student has had her hair trimmed in the past. But for the first time in her life she was getting sizable length removed—all for a good cause.

Turbitt decided it was time to say goodbye to some of her long, light brown locks that flowed 33 inches from the top of her head.

When the stylist was done, Turbitt walked out of the salon with a 20.5 inch long band of hair she is donating to the Locks of Love program that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged people in Canada and the U.S. who suffer from

This past weekend the Ladner Celtic U11 boys soccer team won the Bainbridge Island Challenge Cup in Washington State.

The team wrapped up the title and trophy with a 7-1 victory over the North Kitsap Havoc on Aug. 26.

The theme of the Tournament for the Celtic was

"I'm sorry I messed up," laughs Ladner's Dick Nicholls during a telephone interview.

The 76-year-old former competitive mile runner is commenting on how he just missed a gold medal sweep during one of the three cycling events he entered in last week's B.C. Seniors Games in Burnaby.

As it was, the former Air Canada airline pilot brought home a respectable haul of two gold (16 km time trial and 55 km

road race) and one silver (hill climb).

"I lost the hill climb this time by about 15 seconds," he says, adding he is hoping to make amends for that when he travels to St. George, Utah in October for the annual Huntsman World Senior Games where he's aiming to be in contention for four golds since the event south of the border adds one extra race—a criterium.

2012 Land Disposal & Acquisition Plan The Board of Education of School District No. 37 (Delta) and the Corporation of Delta have signed a Memorandum of Understanding that will see a number of property line and property ownership issues between the two parties resolved.

The changes proposed are as follows: Site 1 - Cliff Drive Elementary School / Brandrith Park (5025 12 Avenue, Tsawwassen) - the parties agree to amend the east property line to reflect the layout of existing playing fields with the Corporation gaining a net 1,745 square metres.

Site 2 - Hellings Elementary School (11655 86 Avenue, North Delta) - the Corporation agrees to transfer a 1,135 square metre portion of the existing road allowance used as part of school site to the Board of Education.

Site 3 - Pinewood Elementary School / Pinewood Park (11777 Pinewood Drive, North Delta) - the Corporation agrees to transfer ownership of three parcels totalling 1.66 hectares used as part of the school site to the Board of Education.

Site 4 - Port Guichon Elementary School / Port Guichon Park (4381 46A Street, Ladner) - the Corporation agrees to transfer ownership of a 1.01 hectare parcel used as part of the school site to the Board of Education.

Site 5 - Delview Park (11670 92 Avenue, North Delta) - the Board of Education agrees to transfer ownership of a 1.47 hectare parcel used as part of the park site to the Corporation.

Site 7 - Sunshine Hills Elementary School / Sunshine Hills Park (11285 Bond Boulevard, North Delta) - the Board of Education agrees to transfer ownership of a 1.33 hectare portion of the school property used as part of the park site to the Corporation.

Site 8 - East Delta School Reserve (4900 96 Street, East Delta) - the Corporation agrees to transfer ownership of a 0.34 hectare parcel historically used as part of a school site to the Board of Education.

Site 9 - Tsawwassen School Reserve (5491 18 Avenue, Tsawwassen) - the Board of Education agrees to subdivide 8.09 hectares from the 8.16 hectare parcel and transfer ownership of that new parcel to the Corporation. Further to the above at Site 9, the Board of Education intends to re-zone and dispose of the remaining 656 square metre residential-sized lot through a competitive bid process at a future date.

All real property to be disposed of by the Board of Education of School District No. 37 (Delta) as listed above has been considered as surplus and not required for future educational purposes.

Each September, it supports the Century Cuts for Cancer event that has employees receive pledges to have their heads shaved.

Other charitable activities include the Heart and Stroke Foundation of B.C.’s Big Bike fundraising ride, and the Delta Hospital Foundation.

In the South Delta Leader's second annual look at some of those companies that care we get to know what is being done on a variety of levels to improve the place we call home.

CAPTIN Canadian Autoparts Toyota (CAPTIN) has been a force in the local economy since it started rolling wheels for Toyota cars and trucks off its production line back in the early 1980s.

With close to 300 employees it uses its corporate heft and large workforce to assist with a number of environmentally focused projects in and around the community such as the Burns Bog Conservation Society and Earthwise Garden in Tsawwassen.

It’s a good parallel to the wheel plant’s commitment to be a zero waste facility and efficient user of hydro electric power.

The company also plays a role as a major

Corporation of Delta The purpose of every municipality is to serve its community, but there are employees at the Corporation of Delta who could be said to have gone above and beyond the job description.

Each fall, the Corporation runs a two-week long United Way Campaign to raise funds for the Lower Mainland.

Last year, Delta employees raised a whopping $60,122.72 for the United Way, by doing things like hosting a chilli cookoff, a worksyard barbecue, bake sales, used book sales, 50/50 draws, and auctions.

Each year the employees find a way to surpass their previous year’s goal. Last year was no

exception, making it the sixth consecutive time employees exceeded the previous mark.

The United Way is just one of many charities and good causes that employees lend their time. They also participate in volunteering as summer camp leaders, Pink Shirt Day to promote anti-bullying, and lead the charge in sustainable living and commuting.

Delta Agricultural Society Founded in 1888 the Delta Agricultural Society has been an unassuming pillar in the community, supporting all manner of groups and causes over its long history.

According to MemoryBC, the B.C. Archival Information Network, between 1994 and 1998, the society donated more than $1.3 million to community groups, facilities and projects. They included Delta Hospital, McKee House Senior Recreation Centre, Delta Farmland and Wildlife Trust, and the Delta Museum and Archives.

One of the more recent contributions was this summer when current society president Peter Guichon was on hand to pledge $250,000 to the new, $4 million REACH Child and Youth Development facility in Ladner.

“We think it's a really worthwhile project,” said Guichon at the time of the announcement.

"We donate money to the hospital, the Delta Farmland Wildlife Trust is our biggest recipient of funds year in year out. But this is also a very worthwhile project and our members really support it."

MK Delta Lands You have likely heard the term “giving back to the community” many times before from companies intent on making a contribution.

But when MK Delta Lands Group does it, it involves much more than just writing a cheque with the decimal point in just the right place.

It is the “roll up the sleeves” type of effort, says company president Joanne Barnett who makes it a point of being on the front lines when the company takes part in a local event.

Among those MK Delta Lands has supported are The Tour de Delta, Delta Hospital Foundation, and Delta Museum and Archives.

Barnett says she enjoys each of those because they capture the spirit of the community.

Save-On-Foods Ladner A Western Canadian company with more than 1,200 growers supplying the shelves, over half of the 300 varieties of fresh vegetables and fruits come from family-operated farms in B.C. and Alberta.

In partnership with the BC Association of Farmers’ Markets, Save-On-Foods is also a provider for local farmers’ markets.

Ladner’s Save-On-Foods puts a big emphasis on local produce, featuring it prominently at the front of the store where they see the most foot traffic from shoppers.

“The thing I like about Ladner is it’s very community oriented and that’s the Save-on-Foods goal,” says store manager Ryan Dennis.

Thrifty Foods Tsawwassen If there’s one thing in which Thrifty Foods Tsawwassen prides itself, it’s that when local shoppers donate money during one of the many charitable promotions held by the store, they can be assured that money will go back into the local community.

Whether it be buying oranges and pumpkins for the Delta Hospital Foundation, or donations for the local food bank, the money is going to help people who live in Delta.

TSI Terminals Although TSI Terminals could be described as a business that moves the world, there’s a discernible local benefit to the economy.

Operating Deltaport Terminal at Roberts Bank, TSI spends more than $37 million in the GVRD annually on everything from biodiesel and fuel to run their fleet, to computers and office equipment.

TSI has instituted a company practice to purchase supplies and equipment locally, whenever possible.

As well, the company provides a $2.6 million tax base for the Corporation of Delta, and 32 per cent of its workers—annual payroll is in excess of $215 million— live south of the Fraser River.

With deep pockets comes the ability to dig deep for those less fortunate. TSI has donated $100,000 to the Delta Hospital Foundation, $100,000 to the Delta Hos-

pice Society, and provides annual scholarships.

Vancity One of the goals of Vancity’s philosophy to get involved in the communities they serve was to create impact and get exposure. In the case of the Tsawwassen branch it’s mission accomplished on both counts.

Branch manager Michelle Laviolette says that when the Delta Youth Support Line Society received confirmation its Vancity grant application had been approved DYSL members put up a large “thank you” sign in their store’s front window. It did not go unnoticed.

“We had a couple of people come across the street who had seen that sign, walk right into the branch and thank us as well.”

Westshore Terminals With success in business comes responsibility. And when Westshore Terminals considers that it results in a commitment to the community that it calls home.

Denis Horgan, the coal port’s vice president and general manager says there’s a simple rule to follow which is to support the community as best as possible, be it donating funds, or making sure whatever can be sourced locally is done.

One of the long-standing programs it has backed is the Junior Firefighters program which welcomes upwards of 1,000 children each year, teaching them fire safety lessons and what it takes to be a firefighter.

TSI Terminals Although TSI Terminals could be described as a business that moves the world, there’s a discernible local benefit to the economy.

Operating Deltaport Terminal at Roberts Bank, TSI spends more than $37 million in the GVRD annually on everything from biodiesel and fuel to run their fleet, to computers and office equipment.

TSI has instituted a company practice to purchase supplies and equipment locally, whenever possible.

As well, the company provides a $2.6 million tax base for the Corporation of Delta, and 32 per cent of its workers—annual payroll is in excess of $215 million— live south of the Fraser River.

With deep pockets comes the ability to dig deep for those less fortunate. TSI has donated $100,000 to the Delta Hospital Foundation, $100,000 to the Delta Hos-

pice Society, and provides annual scholarships.

Vancity One of the goals of Vancity’s philosophy to get involved in the communities they serve was to create impact and get exposure. In the case of the Tsawwassen branch it’s mission accomplished on both counts.

Branch manager Michelle Laviolette says that when the Delta Youth Support Line Society received confirmation its Vancity grant application had been approved DYSL members put up a large “thank you” sign in their store’s front window. It did not go unnoticed.

“We had a couple of people come across the street who had seen that sign, walk right into the branch and thank us as well.”

Westshore Terminals With success in business comes responsibility. And when Westshore Terminals considers that it results in a commitment to the community that it calls home.

Denis Horgan, the coal port’s vice president and general manager says there’s a simple rule to follow which is to support the community as best as possible, be it donating funds, or making sure whatever can be sourced locally is done.

One of the long-standing programs it has backed is the Junior Firefighters program which welcomes upwards of 1,000 children each year, teaching them fire safety lessons and what it takes to be a firefighter.

"We were also involved with the Delta Gymnastics Invitational, Delta Artists' Guild Oil and Water Show, and Operation Red Nose," Laviolette says.

Staff at the Tsawwassen branch also lend their time on various committees and boards of local organizations such as DYSL which has become a virtual partner with Vancity.

"That in itself has been a fantastic story," Laviolette says. "DYSL is a social enterprise, they use it as a volunteer hub, train youth and create a fund of grants for students in high schools across Delta."

With Vancity's financial assistance DYSL was able to implement programs that had impact.

"It's a win-win all around."

Save-On-Foods Ladner Focused on what’s local

FAST FACT Save-On-Foods is a part of the BC Fruit and Vegetable Snack Program, which provides over 300,000 children access to fresh, B.C.-grown fruits and vegetables in their schools.

The Save-On-Foods Ladner team is a community fundraising machine.

Every three months the store works with Envision Financial to put on a local event with music and food, with proceeds going to the Delta Hospital Foundation.They were proud to present the hospital foundation with a cheque for $3,105 in June.

“The team all rallied together in the store here to do that,” says store manager Ryan Dennis, who has been with Save-On-Foods for 19 years.

The next event is on Sept. 22, and Dennis said their goal is to raise $5,000 for the hospital’s cardiac department.

“The thing I like about Ladner is it’s very community oriented and that’s the Save-on-Foods goal,” he said.

Dennis is also hoping to reach an annual goal of raising $10,000 for BC Children’s Hospital by hosting a wheel-of-fortune style of event in front of the store.

Save-On-Foods also encourages shoppers to give back by offering incentive matching. If a customer donates 1,000 store points to charity, the company will match that $1 contribution to charity, making it a $2 donation.

Save-On-Foods Ladner recently worked with the United Food and Commercial Workers union to recognize the charity work of two employees in the store by awarding them with the Diversity andTrainingTrust.

Ladner resident Ray Ramsay has been working for Ladner Save-On-Foods for four years in the Changes Department. Ramsay raised money for Wigs for Kids, a charity which provides children with hairpieces after losing their hair to serious illnesses like cancer.

Jason Shack is another Ladner resident who has worked at Ladner Save-On-Foods for a dozen years. Shack has been working with an organization named KIVA, a non-profit which provides interest-free loans to people in developing nations. His financial contributions have gone to support people living in Mexico, Kenya, and Peru.

Save-On-Foods and UFCW contributed $500 each to these charities in recognition of their work.

Dennis says helping people in the community extends to their sales philosophy as well. Locally produced fruits and vegetables are displayed at the front of the store and promoted.

Westshore Terminals Ltd. Serving the global market

FAST FACT Westshore Terminals is Canada’s premier coal export terminal handling around 200 ships a year and throughput totals over 20 million tonnes.

While Westshore Terminal sends the bulk of its business efforts to overseas customers, it has always maintained a commitment much closer to home.

The coal port at Roberts Bank allocates between $100,000 to $200,000 each year to a variety of groups and organizations in the South Delta and Point Roberts area.

The reason?

Denis Horgan, Westshore's Vice President and General Manager says it all comes down to wanting to be part of the community.

"Our philosophy has always been that we live in the community, we're part of the community, and we should support that community," Horgan said. "Be it supporting local charities, schools, the local hospital, hospice, firefighters' education program or purchasing things in the community to support local business."

And who else do they help?

"It's a long list," Horgan says. "Recently, the bigger ones have included the Delta Sport Development Centre," Horgan says, alluding to the $200,000 donation Westshore Terminals has made over a five-year period that saw the sports organization move into its new home

beside the Ladner Leisure Centre last year.

The new, $2.5 million building is twice as large (15,500-square-feet) as the one it left at the South Delta Recreation Centre which has allowed it to offer room for more programs to athletes of all ages.

"They (Delta Gymnastics) do a wonderful job, not just in creating gymnasts, but providing physical education for everybody," Horgan says. "And we figure the gymnasium will be there for another 50 years and will support generations of South Deltans. So, when we were approached to play a role there we thought it was a very worthy cause.

"And we're fortunate that we are a profitable company and we feel we should be contributing back to the community like that," Horgan says. "We regard ourselves as very much part of South Delta. That's our home. That's where we operate. And we think we should do whatever we can to give back to the community, essentially."

With the majority of Westshore's 300 or so workforce coming from the South Delta, Surrey and North Delta areas, keeping a firm focus on acting locally is a prime concern.

Corporation of Delta Going lean and green

For the Corporation of Delta, going green is about more than just a trendy gimmick. Municipal staff are given the opportunity to show they care about the community in which they work.

Traffic is a problem in Delta, which is why the Corporation runs a popular car-pooling program for a fleet of fuel-efficient vehicles. Employees who live in the same geographic region can ride together, saving gas and limiting air pollutants.

The vehicle fleet even earned an E3 Fleet Gold Rating Plaque from the Fraser Basin Council.The Corporation also offers discounted bus passes to staff to encourage sustainable commuting.

Delta launched its Green Can initiative in April to residents who can compost food waste and yard trimmings, and in the fall the Corporation is spreading that program to its employees, so they can compost biological waste.

“We definitely have an emphasis on green.” says Lauren Munden, communications manager at the Corporation of Delta. But it’s not just the planet’s health that’s important.The municipality also tries to ensure employees are eating healthy and exercising.

Last Christmas, the Health and Wellness Committee launched a version of the “Biggest Loser”

challenge, in which contestants try and lose weight. The 45 participating staff members lost a cumulative 175 pounds over 13 weeks.

“Each week they would email healthy recipes and they would encourage us,” says Munden.

“It was a really great competition and it was just to help us get on track for moving toward a healthier lifestyle.”

Delta also offers all of its staff a discount to use its recreational facilities, so the Ladner Leisure Centre usually has a good few employees burning calories before or after work or even during the lunch hour.

Munden says many employees have a good reason to care about the environment and their coworkers.

“There’s a fair amount of staff that live in Delta and it’s actually kind of neat that way because they’re working in their community and a lot of them take pride in that.”

In addition to health and wellness, Delta provides employees with in-house training courses, to keep their skills well-honed. They receive an education allowance, too, if they wish to take courses outside the Corporation on their free time.

MK Delta Lands Group Becoming part of the community How does one decide where to play a role in the community they do business?

For Joanne Barnett, president of MK Delta Lands—which owns roughly 500 acres of property adjacent to the Burns Bog Ecological Conservancy Area—it was an easy philosophy for her to develop.

“We think that if you are in a community, you are a part of the community, and it's not about you,” Barnett says. “It's about the community that you become a part of.”

And the areas that help fulfill that wish are ones that are near and dear to not only Barnett's heart, but those people who live in the community, as well.

“When I first became involved in Delta I quickly decided there were two areas I wanted to offer support. One was theTour de Delta because it's what drew these three communities (North Delta, Ladner and Tsawwassen) together.

“And the other was the (Delta) Hospital Foundation, because I just thought it was a wonderful example of the spirit of a community that size could sustain a hospital of that quality.”

also a straightforward choice, given the firm's involvement in the area.

But just providing the necessary funds to get a community project or event rolling is not the only extent to which a company should be willing to commit.

Barnett says there comes with it a sense of responsibility to become fully part of the project itself.

“I personally believe that if you sponsor something, writing the cheque is only part of it.

You need to be involved in terms of being there.

So, anything we fund, I would say 99 per cent of time I am actively there, present to represent the company and to encourage people and thank them and recognize their community spirit.”

One event that stands out clearly in Barnett's mind is the Delta Hospital Foundation's Walk for Health that MK Delta Lands had sponsored for several years.

She says the chance to get out and be among a large group of hospital supporters was an uplifting experience.

“The community spirit in Delta is exemplary.

It's one of its great assets,” she says.

TSI Terminal Systems has been a part of British Columbia’s marine and port industry for more than 100 years.

As operator of two container terminals—Vanterm in Vancouver’s inner harbour and Deltaport at Roberts Bank— TSI is responsible for managing the movement of 1.8 million TEUs (twenty foot equivalent units) of containers annually once they arrive on the dock.

Although TSI handles approximately 75 per cent of the Port of Vancouver’s container traffic, it is committed to conducting operations in an environmentally responsible manner by not only meeting environmental standards, but also exceeding those standards and advocating new ways to reduce environmental impact.

Thrifty Foods Tsawwassen Growing a community

Tsawwassen’s Thrifty Foods doesn’t just sell groceries. It produces much-needed donations for local charities and the food bank.

In one fundraiser, every dollar from the sale of Navel Oranges went to the Delta Hospital Foundation, raising a total of $3,387.

The store accoplished the same thing for pumpkins last year during Halloween, producing a further $732 for the foundation.

And during Christmas,Thrifty FoodsTsawwassen was able to cut a cheque for $5,000 for the food bank.

“All the money that’s raised for the food bank, foundation, all that is from local customers in the store,” says Erin Kelly, a spokesperson for Thrifty Foods.

Another promotion offered by the store for the past five years is “Shop for Groceries,” raising $2,200 for the Delta Gymnastics Society. As well, the Kids First Campaign allowed people to buy little foam cubes for the gymnasium’s fall pits, raising another $3,800.

If that isn’t enough, the store even offers a Smile Card program for shoppers in any community. The card provides five per cent back on each member card user’s grocery purchases toward non-profits,

charities, schools, and organizations in that person’s community.

“We really do support things that happen in our backyard,” says store manager Grace MacInnes, who added she’s really been impressed with the extent of fundraising for community events and charities since taking over the role earlier this year.

The store recently participated in the annual Cops for Cancer, an event that takes place each fall when more than 100 members of law enforcement and emergency services cycle for two weeks across four regions of B.C. to support children with cancer and their families.

But helping local charities isn’t Thrifty Food’s only community contribution.

“What I’m very proud of in our own store is that we actually have seven special needs employees and three of them have been long-term,” says MacInnes, adding they are productive, important members of the team.

She said one of those employees, who has worked there since the store opened, is also a participant in the Special Olympics.

The job has allowed Scott Fattedad, who has Down Syndrome and is affectionately known as Scottie, to live independently.

“How we build and finish the homes is really going to be something Surrey hasn’t seen for a long time,” says Steine.

“There is a very high level of standard finishings available.”

Some of those standard finishings include nine-foot ceilings throughout the main level and an electric fireplace that is perfect for curling up in front of at the end of a long day.

“The kitchens are very usable,” says Steine. With designer-selected granite countertops and a hand-set ceramic tile backsplash, the kitchens are a gourmet’s dream. The stainless-steel appliances and chic contemporary cabinets are complemented by the modern track lighting in the kitchen that easily illuminates your every task without lending a harsh light to the proceedings.

The master suites are relaxing and elegant, with a hand-set ceramic tile tub surround and ensuite floor, large separate shower stalls and tons of closet space. The cabinets with their sleek

knobs and pulls are fitted with softclose drawers and doors as a thoughtful little touch.

Portrait is planning to hold its grand opening in late September or early October, but Steine says that those who pre-register will be able to get a sneak peek at the homes before they officially open.

“If they register now, they have the opportunity to meet with our sales staff the week before opening,” he says. “It’s a good opportunity … and gives them the ability to choose their home before grand opening day. They will want to act on that very quickly.”

Portrait only recently started allowing pre-registration for Panorama Woods, and Steine says that there are already a few dozen people registered.

“There are a lot of people looking in our price range,” he says. “I think we’re really fitting the bill there.”

›COMMUNITYBRIEFS Dog park fences considered Delta's Dog lovers and their pets are expected to have some fenced off areas in two of its off leash parks sometime next year.

The Westview Park Reserve and Delview Park locations in North Delta are awaiting municipal council's approval for new containment areas within the facilities.

Delta staff say the $100,000 project is aimed at providing more security in off leash areas that may be adjacent to busy traffic corridors, as well as provide places where some smaller dogs, that may not socialize as readily as larger dogs, can be set free.

Delta Council is scheduled to consider the matter this fall, and if approved the containment fencing would be installed in 2013.

Whether it's digging into a backyard sandbox, letting gravity take its course down a slide, or re-arranging furniture in a doll house, this quiet four-year-old has always been on the go.

Between the ages of two and three, it was clear to her parents Shaista was always more of a doer than a talker.

She was a not hyperactive and a good listener, says her mother Rachna, but the youngster didn't say more than a word or two at a time—well behind her older broth-

er when he was Shaista's age.

An assessment by Boundary Health speech therapists determined that while she understood what was said and followed instructions well (in Punjabi, spoken at home), Shaista would need some help to improve her outgoing communication skills, be they in English or Punjabi.

Her speech delay would mean needing the services of therapists at an age when she would enter preschool.

Researching her options, Rachna found the help Shaista needed in a quiet North Delta neighbourhood.

For the past year, Shaista has been attending Reach Developmental Preschool North Delta (RDPND), formerly known as the Delta Readiness School Program, which has

Delta promotes outdoor water saving kits Although summer is winding down, Delta residents are still being encouraged to go easy on the water usage outdoors.

Residential water use peaks and nearly doubles every year in the hot months. Outdoor watering accounts for 40 per cent of total residential water usage; leaks and inefficient watering systems can put strain on our local reservoirs.

To help reduce waste, Delta is offering an Outdoor Water Saver Kit. It's a group of tools that allows residents to prevent over-watering by using a variety of watering patterns for different tasks, accurately time outdoor watering, secure hose connections, and measure water applied to yard (including precipitation).

Each kit includes: one Aqua Gun, one mechanical water timer, 12 Hose Washers, two rain gauges.

Cost of a kit is $15 (including tax) and can be purchased at any of Delta's recreation centres and Delta Municipal Hall.

You must be a Delta resident to purchase the kit.

Proof of residency is required.

Delta reacts to serious head-on collision on busy route Adrian MacNair, reporter South Delta Leader A serious, head-on collision at the curve on Hwy. 10 near Scott Rd. has highlighted the need to do something to protect motorists, according to the municipality and local police.

The Corporation of Delta would like to put in a median barrier, similar to the one that was installed on Nordel Way a year ago following fatal collisions on that road. Unfortunately, it can't do that right away since the jurisdiction lies with the province.

Const. Ciaran Feenan, a spokesman with the Delta Police Department, said a conversation will have to take place between the province, the municipality, and the police department.

"But certainly things like that ultimately save lives," he added.

Coun. Robert Campbell, chair of Delta's Traffic Safety Commit-

tee, said he raised the barrier issue at council back in February under new business at the end of the meeting.

"A motion was passed to ask staff to have that discussion with the transportation ministry and see what can be done," he said, but added no report has come back to council about those discussions.

Campbell said it can take some time for things to "filter through" the ministry.

"But there was unanimous agreement among mayor and council that this would be a good thing."

Kate Trotter, a spokeswoman with the ministry, said it has responded to Delta’s inquiry about installing a median barrier, and is currently revising the safety issues the Corporation has raised.

At approximately 7:20 a.m. on July 25 Delta Police responded to a three-vehicle collision in the 11900 block of Hwy. 10.

Three people were taken to local hospital, two with serious but non life-threatening injuries, and another with minor injuries.

According to Delta Police a vehicle traveling eastbound on Hwy. 10 had crossed the centre line into the path of a westbound traveling vehicle which was struck head on.

The roadway was closed for several hours in both directions as morning rush hour traffic was diverted around the scene.

'Heated' competition Team Westshore to tackle firefighter's national competition Adrian MacNair, reporter South Delta Leader A sound resembling a hyperventilating Darth Vader comes wheezing down the stairs at Firehall No. 7 in the Tilbury Industrial Park.

Reed Taylor, a 26-year-old Delta firefighter from Mission, has just finished running up four flights of stairs at the firefighter training centre with full gear on— breathing apparatus, a 45-lb. weight on his shoulders, and has hauled a hefty load tied to a rope up from the ground.

Every step must be touched on the way down, before Reed runs to the "kaiser" and wields a sledgehammer to simulate busting down a door to a blazing building.

He then sprints through an obstacle of pylons, grabs a charged hose with 300-lbs. of drag, and hits a fixed target with a stream of water.

Finally, he grabs "Rescue Randy," a 175-lb. dummy simulating an unconscious body, and drags him 100 feet to the finish line.

Exhausted, Reed tears the respirator from his face, and checks his time. He's dis-

appointed, and sheepishly suggests the number not be shared publicly. In truth, the time is likely to place him in the top 10 in Canadian firefighters vying for the prestigious National Scott FireFit Championships, taking place in Quebec's Baie-Comeau on Sept. 1 and 2.

Delta's Team Westshore has six members on their team, but four will go to the nationals this year. Reed was rookie of the year in 2011.

Jamie McGarva, 38, from Surrey, has been competing for six years and currently holds Canada's top time of 1:17. Although 12 years older than Reed and pushing 40, Jamie is at the elite level of firefighter competition.

Jamie has been tops in B.C. for two years running, finished second in Canada last year, and fourth in the world.

"It's nice for me, but I couldn't do it without the support of the team and the sponsors," he says humbly, adding it's the team that really pushes him to achieve his goals.

It's also his family who help do that. His mother, wife and sisters come out and cheer him on at local

events.

So, how does he manage to pull off such Herculean feats at 38? That's a question better asked of Mark Millward, 48, from Vancouver, who is tops in Canada in the 45-plus category.

"It's one of those sports where it's an all-around athlete kind of thing," he says, adding it isn't just strength or speed that wins the day.

Mark's been at the competition since he began firefighting 16 years ago, originally as a fitness test to get into the department. Once a British soldier who immigrated from London, England, he first thought about joining the RCMP. But after meeting some friends who were firefighters, that career plan changed.

"The more I talked to them about their job, the more I realized it was something I wanted to do," he says.

Mark came second in Canada in 1999 during the nationals in Penticton, an early achievement for Delta's fire department.

"For me to come out and get second in Canada so early in our development was definitely surprising," he says with a touch of pride

in his voice. "We had a few beers that night."

Reed says Jamie and Mark are great guys to learn from, and they demonstrate it's more about technique than brute strength. And although each firefighter has an individual challenge ahead of them, there are also team trials where the times of the top three competitors are added up.

"You don't want to let your team down by running poorly," he says.

The team trains from May to September, meeting once a week on the course. Part of the motivation of not falling behind is ensuring the team isn't let down, says Jamie.

Ryan Rickards, 36, from Langley, has been training for 12 years, but has had to take the last couple of years off for surgery on his arm from an injury sustained during renovations.

Another elite member of the team, Ryan finished seventh in the world in his second year of competition.

Although the injury could have forced him into competitive retirement, he came back.

"I don't know if it's a motivation so much as an

addiction," he says, adding friendly rivalry and a little "one-upmanship" with other fire departments keeps him hungry.

"I want to stop, but I can't," he says, laughing.

Ryan's not sure why the older guys tend to perform so much better than the younger ones, but speculates it's about nerves and poise.

"Guys train nine months

for this. If you trip on the stairs, all that training is for naught."

Jamie agrees.

"As you get older it seems you can push harder and longer," he says.

Ryan doesn't think Mark will ever quit competing, because he loves the training.

"He'll keep going and going until one day he keels over on the course and dies.

And he'll die happy."

Rancher forced to sell Court ruling puts end to vehicle storage business Adrian MacNair, reporter South Delta Leader A long-time East Delta farmer is pulling up stakes and selling his property because he says he can no longer make money off the land.

Every one of Bob Robertson's neighbours make extra money storing vehicles or materials on their farms. But Robertson says he's been singled out by the Corporation of Delta and the Agricultural Land Commission (ALC) for improper land use.

"There's numerous junk piles on farms, old cars, debris, on Delta and Surrey land," he explains.

"And basically the ALC and Delta picked on me because I was the biggest, best, and cleanest."

A former cattle rancher and dairy farmer, Robertson at one time had 300 head of dairy, and 1,000 head of beef. He quit the business 14 years ago.

"The beef business, you can't make any money at it. They can import it from New Zealand for half the price."

Robertson has since been providing storage for people's cars, trucks, boats, motor homes and recreational vehicles.

Some of his clients were big companies, such as BC Conveying, Laidlaw, PavCo, Pacific Blasting, Bell-Con Electric, and

BC Hot House.

Business was good, and Robertson grossed $360,000 last year.

But the business is closed.

About five years ago Robertson says he was approached by representatives from the Corporation and ALC about improper land use, even though he pays taxes on the seven acres of storage at five times the farming rate.

As well, Robertson says he only makes use of the footprint of the farm, and never stored any materials or vehicles on the land itself.

It irks Robertson, as he waves his hand around to neighbour properties with vehicles and construction materials parked in the fields, that he was singled out while others haven't been.

A recent B.C. Supreme Court ruling seems to have settled the issue for good, banning the farm as a permitted storage use.

Justice Deborah Kloegman ordered a prohibition on the storage of "vehicles, boats, recreational vehicles, trailers, and any other non-farm related property" not owned by Robertson or authorized by the ALC. Robertson, now 60, has been at the property on Ladner Trunk Road just east of 104th Ave. since he was 23. When he built his first barn in 1975 it was one of the biggest in Delta. He still

maintains every acre of arable land and says the entire plot is laser-levelled.

Now, he's put the farm up for sale, all 41.16 acres, two houses and 64,000-square-feet of buildings, and he's asking for $4.8 million ($117,000 per acre).

"I've decided to sell on my own," he states flatly. "It's my decision. Nothing else will pay and I'm not going to let the footprint and the buildings fall down."

Robertson has already had to let go seven tenants who rented buildings, and had the owners of 360 vehicles parked there drive them away. His farm is now virtually devoid of vehicles, well before the court-imposed Sept. 1 deadline.

Robertson says the shame of it is that the Corporation could have rezoned a portion of his property to CD-210 to allow for the storage, but wouldn't do it. He said other local businesses and farmers have the zoning amendment for things like wine, feed stores, and auto body shops.

After he sells the land, Robertson plans to go into real estate and rental properties that aren't controlled by the agricultural commission.

The issues facing the 60 youngsters attending RDPND (40 attend the "south" preschool at Reach's headquarters) are wide-ranging, says Susie Gall, manager of preschools at Reach.

They can be Down Syndrome, autism, behavioural problems or medical issues; some are just slow learners.

"It's different every year," says Gall.

The preschool has three classes with a maximum of 20 kids each, offering parents the choices of 2.5-hour blocks for two, three or five days per week, mornings or afternoons.

All developmental areas are nurtured, including speech and language development, social development, intellectual development, fine motor development, gross motor development and self-help skills— with the help of trained therapists.

Those therapists spend time at the preschool or visit homes.

"It's individualized service," explains Gall.

Each class has two teachers and at least two support staff on duty at any one time. RDPND has several specialized areas, including: • The art room offers easel painting, Play-Doh, and structured and unstructured creative art activities promoting fine-motor skills, communication and socialization skills; • The fine-motor room offers puzzles, table toys, sensory play, science and cooking activities promoting cognitive and fine-motor skills;

• The discovery room offers blocks, housekeeping, a climbing apparatus and toys. These activities promote creative development, large motor skills, socialization and communication skills; and • The outdoor playground, complete with a miniature house, a sandbox, slides, climbing apparatus and swings allows children participate in large-motor activities.

While the latter has been one of Shaista's favourite spots over the past year, it's her interaction with others that has brought praise from her teachers and parents.

"She's a lovely girl and she's made a ton of progress," says Gall.

She's gone so far as to make eye contact with everyone, call teachers by name, and say complete sentences.

"I see a huge difference," says her mother. "Her vocabulary has increased immensely, although she's still not up to the level as other four-year-olds."

She's also phrasing more sentences in English than Punjabi, English being the language used by her preschool teachers and speech therapists.

Rachna is okay with that, since Punjabi is still spoken exclusively at home.

Shaista will return this September for her second year of preschool at Reach.

"Delta, land of the sun That's Delta, where livin' is fun You'll find it's a great place to be That's Delta, B.C." It's a jaunty old tune the 80-year-old songsmith wrote back in 1979 as part of a contest marking Delta's centenary.

And she's hoping it will make a comeback as a way of showing pride in the community.

Scott, a Tsawwassen resident since the mid 1960s has been writing music and composing songs for most of her life.

"I have a (music) bench full of my own compositions," she says, most of it Christian-based.

The talent came naturally—her parents had a dance band during the Second World War. "I was raised with

She also sang at an early age. Her voice was mature for her age and she made various radio performances in Edmonton where she grew up.

And while Scott had a professional life as a bookkeeper, she enjoyed performing all of her own music, especially the Delta B.C. tune.

"The original one was done in a hurry. There wasn't much time," Scott says of the Delta Centennial song contest ."And there may have been just two entries.

Who knows," she adds laughing.

Her prize a ceramic plaque with Delta's logo.

But the biggest thrill was having a children's choir sing the tune at a community party at Centennial Beach 33 years ago.

Delta triathletes helping Canuck Place Pair ready to tackle Cultus Lake course next month Philip Raphael, editor South Delta Leader A pair of Delta triathletes are in training to give their best effort for the kids at Canuck Place.

Tammi Mannering and Andrew Do are going to be in the field Sept. 16 at the Innovative Fitness Canuck Place Adventure Challenge at Cultus Lake.

Mannering says the fundraising event involves a 5 km kayak, 50 km road bike and 5 km trail run.

Another Canuck Place fundraising triathlon is also being held Sept. 15 in Deep Cove.

Mannering says that event features more of a mountain biking section with a 6 km kayak, 32 km bike and 10 km run.

"It looks like it's going to be quite enjoyable.

It's sort of like an alternative triathlon," said Mannering who lives in Ladner and is a relative

"There's no swimming involved with this, hopefully."

Both she and Do, a personal trainer at Innovative Fitness and

Tsawwassen resident, belong to the South Delta Triatlon Club and Steveston Athletic Association and regularly log training distances of up to 100 km on their

"Sometimes we go a little longer, like the Seattle to Portland ride in July which was about 300 km," Mannering said, laughing. "This will be a little bit of a different challenge because I don't kayak often. It will be an interesting one."

So is the cause the pair are supporting through pledges.

"Definitely, the Canuck Place Childrens Hospice is something that tugs on your heart strings when you hear stories about it."

While she has not had first-hand experience with the work done at Canuck Place Mannering said she knows enough about it to be motivated for the Cultus Lake event.

The two are hoping to raise $1,000 each and racers can be sponsored by visiting the event's website at cultuslake. adventurechallenge.ca/.

Future in education Retired Delta teachers honour top student Stepping onto the stage of the Burnsview Valedictory Ceremony, Marina Smailes had no idea that by the end of the evening she would be awarded several scholarships, including the Delta Retired Teachers Scholarship for $1,000.

The list of accomplishments was lengthy for Smailes who served as Burnsview's student council president and yet still found time to play rugby and basketball for the school.

"A full schedule makes me happy because I enjoy opportunities to

work with others," she said.

However, she felt the best thing she did to impact her success in learning was to step in French Immersion.

Smailes has targeted a career in teaching and is heading for McGill University for her undergraduate studies, with Cambridge as a possible next step.

Her grandfather was a Cambridge graduate and she says the opportunity to teach abroad would be an exciting way to launch her career.
