Province spends on highways Submitted Work is now underway on three safety enhancement projects that will result in improved safety for East Kootenay residents and travellers. “These are just the kind of safety improvements we could use on our highways in the East Kootenays. I know we’re pretty good drivers out here, but a little added visibility, speed reminders and acceleration lanes will de¿nitely bene¿t the travelling public,” saic Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett. Project details: The three highway improvement projects are funded through the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure’s community safety program and include the following: • Improve highway curve delineation and barrier reÀectors on Highway 3 between Sparwood and the Alberta border. In addition, install an open/ closed sign for eastbound traf¿c at the intersection of Highway 3 and Highway 43 in Sparwood so motorists have a safe place to stop should Highway 3 be closed. • Purchase two trailer mounted speed readers for use in various locations around the Fernie area. Speed reader boards increase

New trailer mounted speed readers are coming to the Fernie area as a part of highway safety enhancements for the region. the safety of pedestrians and the travelling public by advising motorists when they are travelling too fast. • Construct southbound acceleration and deceleration lanes at the intersection of Highway 43 and Sparwood Heights Drive to improve safety for vehicles entering or leaving the highway. These intersection improvements in Sparwood will provide increased safety, mobility, and reliability for all users, including local traf¿c to access Whiskey Jack Resort Community and Whiskey Jack Golf course. These projects are part of $5 million invested this year by the Govern-

ment of British Columbia for safety projects in and near B.C. communities to improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists on provincial highways. These projects were chosen by the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure through consultation with local governments and law enforcement. Many of the projects are underway; all will be complete by winter. Work on these projects will be complete in September. When conservation of¿cers canvassed the area the next day after the attack people reported seeing the cougar in the neighbourhood for the past several weeks. “Unfortunately, no one called it in,” Canuel said. “That’s one thing we encourage people to do is that if they see a cougar in the neighbourhood consistently to phone us so we can take action.” Operating on a tip from a passerby, of¿cers located the cougar 400 metres from the attack location Monday morning and they surmised that it would come back. They set their hounds on it and they were successful in cornering and eventu-

The hair on Angie Prime’s head stood on end when she turned around. The 35-year-old lower Sunningdale, Trail resident had just hung up the phone on Saturday evening with her husband, Matt, in her home on Glen Drive when something caught her eye. She saw movement and when she turned an adult cougar was stalking out of the dark reaches of her home and into her living room. It was a cougar looking for an easy meal, and had slipped into the home through an open screen door in the back. Within the span of a heartbeat the cat leapt at Prime and she acted quickly, jumping and bringing up her arms to shield her face and her knee to block the cat’s pounce. The cat raked her claws across Prime’s thigh but her attack was thwarted. Prime’s 11-year-old border collie, Vicious, lived up to her name and jumped off a nearby couch and came to her aid, snapping at the cougar, turning it away from the four-foot-two-inch Prime. The cougar ran out of the house with Vicious in close pursuit, chasing it back into the forested strip running along the alley behind the house. “You are not thinking to run at that moment when you see a cat,” Prime said Tuesday. As Vicious and the cougar disappeared into the woods help began to arrive. Next door neighbours heard her scream-

ing and her neighbour across the street heard and came running out. Prime felt very lucky the way it ended, with

nus shot. “It’s a chance in a million that (a cat attack) would ever happen in a home,” she said. “But if it wasn’t for (Vicious) I would have been mauled.” B.C. Conservation operations inspector Aaron Canuel agreed. He said it was an extremely old female, around nine, near the lifespan extent for a big wild cat and it was emaciated at around 50 pounds, well below the average female cat’s weight of 120 pounds. “It is extremely rare and unusual for a cat to go into somebody’s residence and do that,” he said. “But in saying that, when a cougar is in poor physical condition and it can no longer hunt its regular prey like deer and elk … it reverts to prey that are a lot easier captured.” Like house pets.

The pretty but invasive Flat Peavine Submitted

How exactly Flat Peavine (Lathyrus sylvestris) arrived in the East Kootenay, no one is certain, but it has arrived with invading vengeance. Flat Peavine, now found throughout many parts of North America, is originally a native plant of Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. As is the case with many invasive plants, Flat Peavine may have hitchhiked into the East Kootenay area on a vehicle. Or, due to its fragrant pink Àowers and climbing nature, it may have arrived as an addition to someone’s Àower garden. Perhaps it arrived as a landscape stabilizer for housing developments or as part of a land reclamation project since it was once

touted as a long-lived erosion control plant that thrives in disturbed and acidic soils. Alternately, due to its high protein content it may have arrived as a part of ranchers experiment in forage crops. Regardless of its origin, the use of Flat Peavine as a forage became unlikely when it was discovered to contain high concentrations of diaminobutyric acid (DABA). DABA is poisonous to humans and non-ruminate animals. Ruminate animals such as cattle, goats, sheep, elk, and dear have three to four chambered stomachs. While resting, ruminates bring food back up, chew it, and re-swallow. This process and special ruminant microbes provide some digestive protection and, if Flat Peavine is introduced as

YOUR CITY....WORKING FOR YOU! Changes to City Garbage Collection to Begin September 1

Starting on September 1, 2012, the City will only collect a maximum of three (3) garbage receptacles per week per household. City Council approved the amendment to the Solid Waste Collection bylaw at their regular meeting of August 13. The intent of the amendments to the bylaw is to further encourage recycling and composting thereby reducing the amount of garbage required to be disposed of each week. The Solid Waste Collection and Disposal bylaw also limits the size of receptacles (either containers or bags) to 100 litres and receptacles cannot weigh more than 20 kilograms each. Garbage containers are to have a water tight cover and smooth rim, must be in good structural and sanitary condition and have fixed handles. Plastic bags are to be securely tied closed at the top and be strong enough to withstand normal handling and lifting. For more information about solid waste pickup, your scheduled collection dates or to review the Solid Waste Collection and Disposal bylaw, visit the City of Cranbrook website at www.cranbrook.ca, click on the ‘Residents’ tab, and click ‘Solid Waste Pickup’.

Gregarious Gardener by Top Crop Garden, Farm & Pet

It's Time To Harvest Whether you have planted a large vegetable garden this year or have fruit and vegetables in containers on your patio, now is the time you have been waiting for the entire season. The care and patience you have shown your plants is paid back in full with fresh produce. Picked fresh and allowed to ripen naturally, it is a great tasting and healthy reward. What you have to realize, however, is that unlike at the grocery stores, garden produce cannot just sit in your garden, waiting for you to want it. When the produce is ready, it has to be picked. So what do you do with it all? Some vegetables should be chilled right after harvest. Cucumbers, for example, must be refrigerated as soon as possible as they lose moisture rapidly after picking. Corn is best cooked right after it has been picked, but if you have an overabundance, you can refrigerate it, unshucked, in a paper bag. Do not leave corn sitting out or it will become dried out quickly. If you simply put fresh carrots into the refrigerator, they will go limp in just a few hours. A better way of storing them is to twist off the tops, scrub the dirt off under cold running water, let them drain for a few minutes, then seal them in airtight plastic bags and put them in the fridge. Carrots, as well as potatoes and onions also store well in a dark place. Older homes still have root cellars, but any room that is slightly cooler than room temperature and nice and dark will work. Keep the produce covered to protect it against extremely cold conditions as well as light. Tomatoes like to be stored in a slightly warm, but dry place, and winter squash is best stored at room temperature and refrigerated only after cooking. These and other vegetables also freeze extremely well. Freeze tomatoes whole by first placing them on a cookie sheet and once they are frozen, bagging them up to be used in stews, soups and sauces later. Beans and shelled peas can easily be frozen as well. Follow recommended freezing techniques for best results. Some other produce requires a bit more processing to store for longer periods of time. Apples can be chopped and frozen to be used in pies and cakes all winter. Small fruit and berries can also be frozen and will be great to go in muffins and pancakes or to make sauces and toppings for ice cream. Rhubarb can be stewed and frozen if you want to use it as a compote or simply freeze the stalks sliced, ready to tumble into a pie crust. Pumpkin also makes a great pie filling. Stew the fruit and freeze it in chunks or already pureed with sugar and spices. Canning produce, either just ‘as is’ or pickled is also a great way of preserving some of that summer flavour well into the colder months. Make sure you find the best ways to store your vegetables - if done right you can enjoy that fresh garden taste for a much longer time. If all else fails and you just don’t know what to do with your bounty, you can always give it away. Neighbours, friends and family will appreciate an armful from your garden and also check with the Food Bank, Salvation Army and other charitable groups about sharing your harvest. Till next time... happy harvesting. Submitted by Kerstin

gan to fall into question when it was discovered that it was highly invasive. Its invasiveness results from multiple methods of reproduction including seeds, rhizomes and ramets (self-clones), that allow it to quickly take over a surrounding area. Compounding the problem is Flat Peavine’s ability to climb (46 to 76 cm without support and up to 2.m+ with support), as well as its tendency to form a dense tendril entangled blanket that chokes out underlying native vegetation. As a result, Flat Peavine lowers plant biodiversity and forms dense impassable thickets that block hiking trails and wildlife pathways while increasing ¿re risks. Most importantly, however, Flat Peavine lessens native food sources for wildlife and livestock, leaving in its place a poisonous alternative. The negative economic impact affects the raising of livestock, hunting opportunities and other recreational opportunities. To date Flat Peavine has been found in the following areas of the East Kootenay: road shoulders predominately on Dicken Road in Fernie and near the Fer-

nie Chamber of Commerce and a couple of sites along Highway #3 between Elko and Fernie. In Cranbrook, a few infestations have been sighted along Jim Smith Road and around the Cranbrook Chamber of Commerce. Finally, a couple of isolated infestations have been found along the St. Mary’s Lake road, and near Overwaitea in Kimberley. At this time, it appears as though Flat Peavine is more widely distributed in the Central Kootenay. Many of the known sites have been successfully treated, however new ones continue to emerge. Flat Peavine is most successfully controlled using herbicides including Clopyralid (Lontrel) or Aminopyralid (Milestone). Plants respond quickly to herbicide treatments and can be destroyed after one treatment. While hand pulling and digging could be attempted in a small area such as a home garden, the necessity of removing all the rhizomes make eradication very dif¿cult and annual monitoring and removal is required. Flat Peavine can be differentiated from other members of the pea family by a single pair of grass-like leaves attached to branches that extend from the main stem. A tendril used for climbing extends out from the center of the leaf pairing. If you come across Flat Peavine on East Kootenay Crown Land or other community use areas, please contact the East Kootenay Invasive Plant Council at 1-888-55EKIPC or coordinator@ekipc. com . Alternately, contact the Provincial Weed Reporting Hotline at 1-888-WEEDSBC www.reportaweed.ca The East Kootenay Invasive Plant Council and its Outreach and Education program gratefully acknowledges the ¿nancial support of Columbia Basin Trust, which supports efforts to deliver social, economic and environmental bene¿ts to the residents of the Columbia Basin.

Telus donates to make back to school easier for area kids Submitted

This year, the TELUS Community Ambassadors of the East Kootenays are easing some of that back-toschool Âżnancial strain for families throughout Cranbrook. Four hundred students will receive a free backpack Âżlled with school supplies in time to start the new school year. This initiative is part of TELUS’ Kits for Kids program, an annual tradition through which thousands of backpacks are distributed to young students in need across Canada. “Back-to-school preparation is a crucial step in our kids’ academic success. Each parent wants their child to have everything they need to start the school year on the right foot. Unfortunately, several of them are unable to do so due to Âżnancial hardships,â€? notes Edith LeClair, local president of the TELUS Community Ambassadors. “Programs such as TELUS’ Kits for Kids are incredibly important for families in need. Not only do they ease some of the Âżnancial burden of back to school shopping, they also level the playing Âżeld by ensuring all students start the school year with the same basic supplies as their friends. Children deserve an equal opportunity to succeed, learn and grow.â€? Since 2006, nearly 60,000 Kits for Kids backpacks have been given to kids in need. The kits are prepared by Community Ambassadors each May during the annual TELUS Day of Giving – a special day in which TELUS team members and retirees across Canada volunteer in support of local activities to make positive, heartfelt and lasting connections

within their communities. The backpacks are Âżlled with the essential school supplies needed for each grade: pencils, loose-leaf sheets, pencil cases, rulers and much more. The kits then are delivered to school districts in June to allow the schools to determine need and to be able to notify recipient children and parents before they break for the summer. About TELUS Community Ambassadors The TELUS Community Ambassadors are

active team members and retirees who volunteer at community events and support dozens of TELUS-sponsored programs and initiatives. Last year, all 21 clubs based in British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario and Quebec gave close to 65,000 care items worth a total of $900,000. Their accomplishments include distributing nearly 9,500 Kits for Kids school backpacks, 12,000 comfort kits to families and homeless people in

BACK TO SCHOOL 2012 New SD5 superintendent greets staff, students of local schools

PHOTO SUBMITTED

Bendina Miller, superintendent of schools. Welcome back to all staff, students and parents of School District 5. It is my privilege to welcome you to our 2012-2013 school year. I am truly honoured to be your superintendent for the upcoming year and I look forward to getting to know you and to work with you. In my brief time in School District 5 it has been my observation that we have a dedicated board, strong district and school-based leadership, committed staff and supportive families and community. That is the formula for student success! I’m looking forward to meeting all of my staff colleagues

through my school and district workplace visits between now and September 13. I’ve been delighted to meet our CUPE leadership and District Parent Association Chair as well as district staff and all principals and viceprincipals in recent days. I’m looking forward to meeting with our Teacher’s Association leadership, District Parent Advisory Council, District Student Advisory Council and community partners in the days to come. My priority remains a focus on improved learning outcomes for all students in School District 5. I recognize your dedication as life-long learners and thank you all for the life-changing differences you make for our students. As we approach our new school year I want to acknowledge and thank our colleagues who have worked over summer to ensure that School District 5 is ready for our students. Over recent days, our schools have been vibrant with school opening activities. I’m delighted to acknowledge and thank our teachers and colleagues who are working diligently to

ensure that our schools and district resources are ready to welcome our students to their 2012-2013 school year. Next Tuesday, I have an image of excited students being invited onto their buses by their caring bus drivers, arriving at schools where they will feel valued as they are greeted by their principals, viceprincipals, teachers and school staff. With that ‘welcome back’ I am hopeful that our stu-

dents, staff and parents will feel supported and engaged. I’m looking forward to learning and working together with you to continue the focus on improved learning outcomes for our students.

Tickets still available for Dr. Jane Goodall Submitted

If you are hoping to take advantage of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see Dr. Jane Goodall, Dame of the British Empire and world-renowned primatologist and wildlife conservationist, you’ll have to act soon. The Columbia Basin Environmental Education Network (CBEEN) reported that over half of the tickets are now sold for her public ‘Reason for Hope’ presentation taking place at Key City Theatre in Cranbrook on the evening of September 30, 2012. Following the presentation, Dr. Goodall will be available for a question and answer period and a book signing. CBEEN’s Executive Director commented, “Given that this is Dr. Goodall’s debut in the

Kootenays and one of the most affordable ticket prices in her entire North American tour, we aren’t surprised that tickets are going so quickly.” When asked about the response he noted, “We have had quite a few very interesting inquiries including a mother in Vancouver who is making the trip for her 8-year old daughter to hear Dr. Goodall, a teacher from Selkirk College who is hoping to bring her entire college class, a former West African game warden who now lives near Cranbrook but knew Dr. Goodall in the 70’s and a teacher from Albuquerque, New Mexico who is making the trip to hear her lifelong hero!” CBEEN is grateful for the generous support from premier sponsor, Kicking Horse Coffee,

along with feature sponsors Kootenay Savings Credit Union, Columbia Basin Trust and the Black Press – East Kootenay Group. CBEEN would also like to recognize the important role of their supporting sponsors in making this event a reality including the City of Cranbrook, St. Eugene Mission Resort, Key City Theatre, Cranbrook Photo, Wildsight, Kootenay Kwik Print and Lotus Books. In addition to the public event, CBEEN has also organized for a school presentation on October 1 where Dr. Goodall will introduce her ‘Roots and Shoots’ program. A select group of grade 5 and 6 students from School Districts 5 and 6 will be selected to hear her speak about her beginnings as a young scientist and how that has transformed

CBEEN’s Wild Voices for Kids Coordinator, Susie MacDonald said “I am thrilled about the opportunity this will bring to the Columbia Basin as a platform for experiential environmental learning!” Dr. Goodall will also be meeting with local environmental educators and teachers at CBEEN’s annual

‘Voices for Sustainability’ symposium. Participants will have the exclusive opportunity to ask Dr. Goodall questions about her environmental education programs as well as discuss their development here in the Columbia Basin. /DERXU'D\ There’s much more behind Labour Day than simply a day off. This Labour Day, we’re celebrating the 82 years of contributions that members of the Operating Engineers’ Union have made to the causes of working people. Not only have we helped build many of the most impressive and important structures in the province, our union has been a strong advocate for workplace safety and employment standards. We’re on the front lines, we understand how construction projects come together and we make sure employers, government politicians and agencies have access to our expertise. Veteran players a key aspect of this year’s ICE The Kootenay ICE Hockey Club opened their 2012 Western Hockey League Training Camp recently. This year’s Training Camp once again combined rookie-aged players (players born in 1997), with veteran players (players born in 1992 to 1996). All ice sessions

will take place at Western Financial Place. “Training Camp is an exciting start to the season. The camp provides the opportunity for our coaches and scouting staff to see and evaluate our recently drafted players, while monitoring the progress of our veteran and list players.

Good luck this year

With a smaller number of athletes attending camp, we expect the competition level to be very high,” commented Director of Scouting Garnet Kazuik. Head Coach Ryan McGill said that this coming season is one that the Kootenay Ice should shine in.

“We are looking for some good improvement from our veterans,” said McGill. “It is a young team, but this is the second year for a lot of these guys and I expect they will be using their experience to really help the team.” He added that he has high expectations for this team, even though the Kootenay Ice have been through a lot of staff changes recently. “But our biggest challenge is to get out the gate quick and make sure our goal tending takes front and centre.” said McGill. A total of 64 are expected to participate in Training Camp, including 17 returning players from last year’s Championship team.
