Home Made Diets The nutritional needs of dogs, cats and humans differ. Humans are omnivores, and can maintain excellent health on a meat-free diet with only minimal dietary supplementation. Dogs are facultative carnivores, and therefore able to make better use of non-meat ingredients. Cats are obligate carnivores and must consume meat. Veterinary nutritionists have determined that cats have no biological requirement for carbohydrates in their diet, suggesting that a high meat and low grain diet may be ideal for their well-being. It is important to realize that cats are not just small dogs! The optimal diet varies from species to species, and contains an ideal ratio of the major essential nutrients of proteins, fats and carbohydrates, as well as adequate levels of trace nutrients such as vitamins and minerals. The speciďŹ c requirements of an individual within a species may vary somewhat by age, health, and level of exercise. Over the course of a day, a properly balanced diet should meet the animal's minimum caloric needs for energy, and should not exceed its maximum energy requirements. Supporters of feeding home-prepared diets to pets emphasize the importance of a variety of fresh whole foods for the maintenance of health. The beneďŹ ts of homemade diets include conďŹ dence in the freshness and wholesomeness of the ingredients. While a recipe for a homecooked diet may appear to come from a knowledgeable source, ideas about what constitutes the ideal diet for dogs and cats is currently evolving. Rigid adherence to one recipe over a long time may thus cause severe nutritional imbalances if that diet is later found to be inadequate. Problems may occur if diets are either under- or over-
Contributed by: Dr. Nast Campbell River Veterinary Hospital
supplemented with certain vitamins and minerals. The most common imbalances in homeprepared diets involve calcium, phosphorus, zinc, magnesium, and iron. Animals have different nutritional needs based on their life stage and lifestyle. For example, both growing animals and animals used for breeding have increased requirements for energy, and require enhanced protein levels and optimal ratios of vitamins and minerals to support growth and reproduction. Creating a balanced homemade diet for a pet can be a formidable task, so buying a commercial diet that has been formulated by animal nutritionists is often the safest route to take.
Either way, have your pet examined regularly so that any early indicators of problems may be detected. Since animals age more rapidly than humans, a good rule of thumb is to have a complete physical examination every six months. In addition to a physical examination, it is prudent to have some blood testing done as well. Periodic radiographs to assess bone density and structure as well as tissue density will assist in detecting overt mineral imbalances such as calcium deďŹ ciency. By having a baseline and several sets of test results available, your veterinarian can compare results over time and may spot trends that indicate potential problems.

Rotary ride Saturday Union strike to affect city Ride to Gold River for Jeneese Place In support of Jeneece
Place in Victoria, the Campbell River Rotary Club is holding its inaugural “Ride to Gold River” on Saturday. Jeneece Place is the “home away from home” for families who must travel to Victoria for medical care. “Island bikers, and everyone else who
loves a ride through the mountains on a beautiful day, is invited to join the adventure,” says ride organizer Brian Shaw. Riders can register with a $15 donation before the ride departs or online at www.rotarytvauction.com/rideforjeneece. After arriving in Gold River, there will be live outdoor entertainment, door prizes and a silent auction at Pipers on the Ridge Pub. The ride will leave Gold River well before darkness sets in. The ride leaves Camp-
bell River, from the Walmart parking lot, at 2:30 p.m. However, registration begins at 1 p.m. Registration is also taking place in the following communities: ■ Duncan, 7:30-9 a.m. Island Highway McDonalds. ■ Nanaimo, 9-10:30 a.m. at Woodgrove Mall near McDonalds. ■ Courtenay, 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at the Visitor Information Centre at the Cumberland exit (exit 117). Call Shaw at 250-2878807 or e-mail brian_ shaw@canaccord.com
More than 225 unioniz ed gover nment employees will bring their Campbell River services to a halt Wednesday as part of a one-day province-wide strike. B.C. Gover nment and Service Employee Union (BCGEU) spokesman Oliver Rohlfs says 208 of his members will picket 18 government work sites in the city including approximately 20 at the liquor stores on Dogwood and in Willow Point and another six at the Service B.C. Centre at 1180 Dogwood.
Across B.C. the strike will involve almost 27,000 workers at 1,800 work sites in 153 communities. It will also include members of Professional Employees Association (PEA) and the Canadian Office and Professional Employees Union Local 378 (COPE). COPE vice-president Jeff Gillies says one ICBC employee at the Service B.C. Centre will be on strike. PEA executive director Scott McCannell, says 17 of his union’s members will join the job action at the Ministry
of Forests offices at 370 South Dogwood. There has been little progress in talks between the province and the unions for a new collective agreement. The last government offer was a two per cent wage increase with an additional 1.5 per cent in the second year. BCGEU workers have already held brief strikes over the summer, shutting down some forests ministry

What services, ask McIvor residents who want out KRISTEN DOUGLAS
CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
McIvor Lake Road residents want out of the city. The rural neighbours say they are fed up paying city taxes and not receiving any services in return. “The residents of McIvor Lake Road find it quite unacceptable that our properties are considered within the city limits while we receive no to minimal services as one would expect to receive living in an urban area,” the residents wrote to city council. “Considering that we are being taxed as if we live in city limits, not having services such as water, septic, gas, high speed Internet, cable and garbage collection are quite disheartening. Not having a proper drivable road makes the whole situation just unbearable.”
Dr. Aref Tabarsi, who lives on McIvor Lake Road, has championed annexation from the city for months. He appeared as a delegation at a Strathcona Regional District board meeting in March, where he expressed his desire to join the regional district. Brenda Leigh, director for Area D, said if the McIvor area was to be annexed from the city, the residents would likely fall into her area, which is south of the city limits. But an exclusion from Campbell River would be up to the city, which would have to make a request to the province to reduce the municipality. McIvor Lake Road residents are pushing the city to pull the trigger. Nine homeowners in the small neighbourhood have signed a

are charged a flat rate no matter where they live and that rate is applied to the value of a home, which is determined by the BC Assessment Authority. Ciarniello pointed out that McIvor Lake Road residents do not pay for sewer, water, garbage pick-up or any other city services they’re not receiving. Instead, their taxes go towards things all city residents benefit from and pay for such as public transit, street lights, roads, and recreational facilities. But Tabarsi said the dirt road to his home and his neighbours’ is in poor condition and is typically neglected by the city. “For the entire six months of a year I’m driving on a public road that’s only been graded once. It’s unbearable,” he said. “Collecting our taxes

petition asking to be excluded from the city. That petition was presented to the city and was in front of council at its meeting Tuesday night after the Mirror went to press. Tabarsi said in March that he’d “had it” with the city and was trying to come out from under its jurisdiction. “It’s frustrating,” he said. “I feel like I’m being held hostage. I want to get out of the City of Campbell River.” Tabarsi paid $1,400 in city taxes, but didn’t receive basic city services. “Why am I paying taxes as if I live in Willow Point or downtown?” Tabarsi asked. “I don’t have anything, but I pay taxes at the city’s mill rate.” Laura Ciarniello, the city’s finance manager, explained at the time that all city residents

and giving us minimal to no services, including a basic drivable road, is illegal, unethical and immoral.” The road, which is three kilometres long, is paved for the first 500 metres into McIvor Lake and then gravel the rest of the way. The road is used by local residents, BC Hydro and the Campbell River Ski Club. Tabarsi said in the winter there are so many potholes that he’s often driving on
the wrong side of the road and in the summer, dust is constantly being kicked up. The neglect of the road was the last straw. “McIvor Lake Road... is usually in extremely poor driving condition to the extent that it cannot be tolerated any longer by the residents. Our View
Stop eating, calling, texting and just drive Some B.C. drivers won’t take a break from cellphone technology while operating a motor vehicle despite overwhelming evidence that distracted driving We say: The is the third leading cause of fatal crashes on the province’s roadways police can only behind speeding and impaired do so much to driving. So ICBC and police are revving up enforce rules a month-long campaign beginning this weekend targeting people who talk or text on their mobile device while behind the wheel. It’s a worthy endeavour and perhaps a $167 fine
will convince drivers of the foolishness of their actions. But police resources are limited compared to the number of drivers who figure the chances of getting caught are miniscule and answer their phone or make a call or text. Responsibility for making the roads safer cannot fall solely on police. The public must take the privilege of driving seriously. Operating a motor vehicle is one of the most complicated tasks one does in a day. Manoeuvring two tonnes of metal, glass and rubber at high speeds on relatively narrow roads, surrounded by others doing the same is not easy.
It only takes a second of inattention for disaster to strike. And inattention falls far beyond texting and talking on a cellphone. While perhaps not against the law, distracted driving includes eating and drinking, riding with a pet on your lap, applying makeup or fumbling to change a CD in the stereo. Thankfully, the majority of drivers understand their responsibility and get themselves, and others, to their destination in one piece. For those who don’t get the message, perhaps a hefty fine will make them change their ways. Let’s just hope there’s no loss of life in the meantime.

Private insurance please Regarding last week’s editorial (ICBC mishandled): Finally, someone with the same opinion as my own. I have been trying to make my similar opinion heard by ICBC, the Liberal government and the BC Utilities Commission. Sadly there has been no recognition of the monopoly ICBC enjoys. I can see no real reason why I am not permitted to find my own insurance provider and I hope this changes in the near future. Wayne Wanner, Campbell River
Not so fast, says union
Anyone who thinks privatizing ICBC is the answer to higher rates must not have taken a look at comparable auto insurance coverage or the even more excessive executive salaries in the private sector. Independent studies by Statistics Canada and the Consumers Association of Canada have shown Continued on Page A9 We welcome your opinions on stories and issues published in our pages as well as issues of broader concern encountered elsewhere. A whine for wine may help loosen up the provinces BY LAURA JONES Shipping our wine across the country is still not easy My husband and I visited friends in Ontario recently. Thanks to the passing of Bill C-311, we can now legally give them some B.C. wine as a gift. Or can we? Bill C-311 amended the 84-year old federal law, dating to Prohibition, that made it illegal to carry or ship wine directly across provincial borders (for example from a B.C. winery to Ontario). The law was a poster child for ridiculous red tape and long overdue for amendment. For small wineries, Bill C-311 seemed like a godsend: explaining to customers why you can’t send them wine because they happen to live out of province wasn’t anybody’s idea of a good time. Unfortunately, it takes more than just
amending outdated federal legislation to untangle the mess of rules governing wine travelling across provincial borders. The provinces are involved in regulating, too. The good news is that all provinces, except Quebec, allow individuals to physically take various quantities with them for personal use. It’s now legal, for example, for a Calgarian to buy a bottle of wine from a B.C. winery and take it home. The bad news is that most provinces don’t seem eager to allow their residents to have wine sent to them from other provinces. According to the Canadian Association of Liquor Jurisdictions, which represents 13 liquor boards and commissions, right now there are only two exceptions. Manitoba allows its resident to ship unlimited amounts of wine from other provinces as long as it is for personal use.
The province had no regulations saying otherwise on its books so importing was allowed by default after C-311 passed. B.C. showed leadership among provinces by changing its regulations quickly after C-311 was passed to make importing directly for personal use legal. If I visit an Ontario winery, I can now legally have as much as I like shipped to me (as long as it is for personal consumption and 100-per-cent Canadian wine only). I can order it online, too. If you are a wine aficionado, count yourself lucky to live here. I propose a toast to these two provinces for quickly and clearly supporting the federal red-tape slashing. Dan Albus, the MP who introduced bill C-311, and Shirley-Ann George, who continues to push for more freedom for wineries and consumers through her website
FreeMyGrapes.ca, also deserve feting. I consider them worthy of a CFIB Golden Scissors Award for cutting red tape. As for the other provinces that have yet to join the party, what’s the hold-up? Isn’t supporting local wineries and giving consumers more choice worthy of your immediate support? My friends in Ontario received a bottle of B.C. wine when we arrived. It’s one that I had to carry on the plane. I still can’t ship wine directly to them from a B.C. winery. If they lived in another country it would be no problem. Despite C-311, inter-provincial trade barriers for wine-shipping are still alive and kicking. Laura Jones is executive vice-president of the Canadian Federation of Independent Business. Refinery is a much better idea Media mogul David Black has my full support for his proposal to build a $13-billion oil refinery near Kitimat to process heavy oil from the Enbridge pipeline. I’ve had the same idea myself. Why should we let the Asian countries buy our Canadian crude oil and refine it for their markets when
we could add value by refining it here in B.C. and shipping them the finished product? This is a strategy that would create local jobs for our own citizens and address the environmental concerns around oil tankers travelling in B.C.’s coastal waters. I know for a fact that Alberta wants to do this because I worked
on a project in East Edmonton (a stone’s throw from the refineries in Fort Saskatchewan) that would have seen it become a reality. And as long as Enbridge meets the conditions and standards set out by the premier, moving heavy oil from Alberta through a pipeline would be a heck of a lot better
than shipping it by rail or truck. That’s why British Columbia should be working with Alberta on exactly the kind of joint interprovincial venture David Black is proposing, a venture that would bring valueadded tertiary oil refining to B.C. along with the heavy oil pipeline. Shipping gasoline, jet fuel and other
refined oil products by tanker is just as practical as shipping crude oil and lot safer from an environmental standpoint. So let’s not waste this opportunity and the revenue and jobs it could bring to our province. There’s a lot we could do here in B.C. with a piece of the oil industry pie. Roop Virk, Chilliwack

ICBC: Real problem is the gov’t Continued from Page 8
public auto insurance gives the best value to customers. Since ICBC was established on March 1, 1974, British Columbians have enjoyed reduced insurance fraud, safer roads and lower rates. Part of this is because, ICBC was designed to operate on a non-profit, break-even basis.
Submissions to the Mirror
So where is the real issue? Executive salaries at ICBC are too high and should be dealt with, but that’s only exacerbated in the private sector. The biggest problem at ICBC, is that the government hasn’t stayed true to ICBC’s breakeven mandate. Christy Clark’s government is treating ICBC as their cash cow, raiding over
$1.2 billion from the corporation’s coffers even as they ask ICBC workers to continue their wage freeze and B.C. drivers to pay higher insurance premiums. That money isn’t even going into improving roads or transportation – it’s going into general revenue. If there are any savings coming out of the
gover nment review, how do we know they won’t just be funneled right back into government coffers? British Columbians need to know savings will be used to reduce rates for drivers and keep the unionized workforce at ICBC from falling further behind. When Manitoba’s public insurer was found to have over-
charged its customers, they gave everyone a rebate. The government’s mismanagement of ICBC hurts both their employees and B.C. drivers. Siphoning off ICBC’s profits was never what was intended for our public insurance corporation. Jeff Gillies, COPE 378 Vice-President

up from there. The RCMP is asking the public to be mindful that the school zones are now back in effect and to be watchful for school children along their route. Inattentive driving is now the number two cause of injury and
death, after impaired driving. As a driver, your full attention must be on the driving task at all times. School zone speed limits are in effect from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. during school days and the posted speed is 30 km/ hour. Playground zones
are also in effect from dawn to dusk everyday and are also 30 km/hr. The Campbell River Citizens on Patrol will be assisting the RCMP in Speed Watch activities. Citizen’s On Patrol involvement enhances public safety awareness. It also raises
driver’s awareness by presenting a visual display of their respective speeds. Reading the display board acts as reinforcement for drivers who adhere to posted speed limits and can also act as a wake up call for drivers who exceed the speed limit.
43-year-old woman hit the light on Dogwood Street near South McPhedran Road. The driver wasn’t injured, but when police arrived they detected
notable signs of impairment. The woman was brought back to the RCMP detachment where she provided breath/alcohol readings four times more than the legal
limit. She is facing drunk driving charges and her vehicle was impounded. A 22-year-old man also had his Ford pickup impounded
for 30 days and was issued a 90-day driving prohibition for being under the influence of alcohol. The man was also caught driving 128 km per hour in a 60 km zone.
Drivers can expect to see more Mounties and Citizens on Patrol watching Campbell River streets next week when kids head back to school.

Campbell River Living Fran the florist is no shrinking violet BRIAN KIERAN CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
Willow Point florist and treasured busy body Fran Jones says she doesn’t have “a clue” why she just received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. Leaning on her cane to ease the burden of worsening multiple sclerosis she huffs, “If you find out who put my name forward let me know.” Most folks crave recognition of this calibre. Remarkably, Jones seems somewhat embarrassed. “My day is done,” the 71-year-old insists. Don’t believe her for a second. While her capacity to engage is diminished, it is certainly not extinguished. In fact, everything about Jones’ track record in Willow Point shouts tenacity. “It’s plain stubborn-
ness,” she admits. That tenacity was nurtured when her two boys were still in school and Jones, a widow, went to work as a letter carrier to support the family. What Canada Post did not know was that she had already been diagnosed with MS. If they had known, she believes, they never would have hired her. “At the 10-year mark my MS was increasing and I knew I wasn’t going to be a letter carrier for too much longer.” That’s when Jones’ orchid greenhouse at home led to her setting up a modest flower cooler in the local co-op which evolved into Oyster River Flowers and still thrives today as The Flower Shop at Willow Point. Later in life Jones continued to face and overpower health challenges. In her 60s she

ued with the Business Improvement Association in the 1990s. The revitalization of Willow Point was truly a community effort, Jones recalls. It included open houses and broad input.
“Everyone here at that time was involved i n t h e rev i t a l i z a tion planning including people who lived here. City hall’s planners were a huge help. At that time the city often sent prospective businesses and developers down to talk to us.” Most often those developers were sent to see Jones and she became widely recognized as the de facto “Mayor of Willow Point.” “Willow Point has always been a welcoming community, a great place to raise kids. Most of the business owners live in the area and so do the people who work here.” Jones’ Diamond Jubilee Medal is her second “Royal” acknowledgement. In 2002, she received the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal also for her record of community service.

Brothers battle for top Tyee
Mark Lagos rowed as his eight-year-old son Owen landed a 43-pound Tyee salmon on Wednesday morning.

When it comes to fishing, little brother has the upper hand on his older sibling. Last year, Nathan Lagos, then 10, won the Junior Trophy at the Tyee Club for landing a 34.5 pound chinook salmon. His dad Mark was rowing Nathan and the senior Lagos was back on the oars Tuesday morning, rowing for his eight-year-old son Owen who caught his first spring salmon, a
24-pounder As big as that is for a fish, it was still six pounds short to get Owen into the club, which requires catching a chinook more than 30 pounds, using a single barbless lure. Well, on Wednesday mor ning they were back at it with mom Kathy also in the boat. This time dad got Owen
into the club, leading him to a 43-pound Tyee – the biggest catch of the season, so far, in the Tyee Pool. “What a morning, we can’t wipe the smiles off our proud faces,” said Kathy. Owen caught both fish on an Isfeld plug which he nicknamed “Blueberry Sunshine.”

Arts & Entertainment Steamin’ towards Labour day It’s time for the Museum at Campbell River’s Steam Donkey to roar! In celebration of Labour Day, the museum will fire up its steam donkey from 12-3 p.m., in honour of the island’s rich logging history. It’s an amazing sight to see this old workhorse of the forest all steamed up. As part of the festivities, a blacksmith’s forge will be on hand for demonstration. The Museum’s amazing Lego collection will be outdoors for the kids (and parents) to play with. Plus, ChalkMan himself, Alex Witcombe, will be present demonstrating his chalk talents on the sidewalk. Rumour has it that he will also bring along his ChalkCar for fun; a car famously known as “Chalk My Ride” which the community is invited to help decorate. Free coffee will be available. Inside the Museum will be Lego displays along with the Tyee Fishing exhibit.

Carpooling makes sense, no doubt about it. It 2X14 2X14 cuts down on emissions, saves commuting costs, reduces congestion on our highways and helps us feel good for being part of the solution rather than part of the problem. For the most part, as far as the laws are concerned, true carpooling is relatively unregulated too. Problems arise when money enters the picture. Both ICBC and the Passenger Transportation Branch will become interested as will the police, depending on the amount of money that changes hands for the ride. If no money changes hands, ICBC does not require an insurance rate class change on the vehicle being used.CHEV If money is given to TYEE TYEE CHEV offset the cost, a vehicle owner may insure their vehicle in the rate class for its normal use, provided that their passengers’ contributions do not exceed the cost of fuel, insurance, wear and tear, and/or parking for the trip and don’t include expenses for depreciation of their vehicle. Their vehicle will only needed to be rated for business use if they start gaining financially from driving passengers. The Passenger Transportation Branch advises that a private car pool vehicle, for example, a driver from the Fraser Valley who uses his vehicle to car pool a group to BCIT or a group of individuals that purchase a vehicle that is designated a car pool vehicle and individuals take turns driving the vehicle at specific times. These types of vehicles are not captured under the legislation. In either case, if a profit is being made by the ride provider it then becomes a commercial venture and the proper insurance and licensing will be needed. Bee friendly to our premier pollinators Bees could be the bee all and end all when it comes to the food we eat. Scientists tell us that one-third of our food crops depend on bees for pollination, making them essential helpers for humankind. Most folks, though, consider them a mere annoyance. Fruit producers rely completely on these airborne pollinators, and with honeybees and other bee species in decline across Canada, it’s important to pay more attention to these under-appreciated insects. Blame for plummeting bee populations has been placed on various factors, including pathogens, pesticides, habitat loss and climate change. North America boasts 42 different species of bumble bee, the slow-moving, fuzzy giants of the bee kingdom. The “Bombus” clan are slow to anger and meek in behaviour. Only queen bumble bees survive the winter; they can be seen flying solo in early springtime, seeking to establish their new colony.
Bumble bee drawing by eight-year-old Melissa Chorney.
Bumble bees’ hairy bodies hold in body heat so they can fly at colder temperatures than other bees. Since luscious nectar and pollen hidden within flowers is their life, it’s not surprising that floral colours attract bees. However, because
t h e i r e ye s are “tuned in” to different parts of the colour spectrum than ours, bees cannot see red. Neat fact: Flowers have “landing
Christine Scott Island Wild
strips” that help bees find the nectar. Striped markings near a flower’s centre may or may not be visible to the human eye,
but bees can spot them all because of an ability to see ultra-violet light. These markings act like runways which help the bee land near the nectar source. E-mail Christine at wildernesswest@shaw. ca

What is a Memorial Society? A memorial society is an organization designed to provide their members with discounted rates for funeral services. Generally a one-time payment of a membership fee (anywhere from $15.00 to $30.00) will provide a person with a card indicating their status as a memorial society member. After a death occurs an activation fee of roughly $40.00 is collected on behalf of the memorial society to qualify the person for reduced funeral service costs. Often these savings can be Sandy Poelvoorde significant, anywhere from several hundred to a thousand dollars depending on the type of services chosen. Some memorial societies have contractual agreements with funeral homes who agree to honour their reduced fees. This means that a memorial society member will be referred to a specific funeral provider by a memorial society when a death occurs. Sometimes due to changing contracts and funeral home closures or new ownership terms, families may find themselves being referred outside of their community to a contract provider as opposed to the funeral home closest to where they live. This could mean that additional transportation and other service charges may be applied which may reduce the overall savings of being a member of a memorial society. Since many funeral homes not under contractual obligations do honour memorial society rates, it is important to contact a local provider first to see if your arrangements can be handled locally at no additional cost. It is important to know what is covered by your membership fees and what is not. A memorial society membership can be linked to a pre-paid funeral plan. If it is, then when a death occurs one need only contact a funeral provider to complete the outlined arrangements. However, it is very common to have only a membership card and no pre-paid arrangements in place. So if you are already a member but don’t know if you have a pre-paid service or a pre-planned service you should contact your society and ask for the details of your service arrangements. Pre-paid plans are almost always transferable so if you find arrangements were made at a former residence, simply transfer your plan to a more convenient location. Always remember that your funeral plan, assigned or not, belongs to you and not to a specific funeral home and is transferable if you ever move or change providers.

ROOKIE MEETS VETERAN Niki Hodgkinson and Jana Sawyer eye Tour de Rock
N
iki Hodgkinson was 16 when she shaved her head for the Canadian Cancer Society Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock. Eleven years later she’s riding in the Tour de Rock as a rookie officer with Saanich police. The annual fundraiser she started at Oak Bay high school has been ongoing ever since. “I’ve wanted to get involved since then, and wanted to be (a cop), I just didn’t think I’d be able to ride on the Tour so soon, Hodgkinson said. The 27-year-old is at one end of the spectrum, while fellow Saanich officer Jana Sawyer is at the other end. Sawyer has worn a badge for 28 years, starting with nine years in the RCMP. The past 19 years she’s been with Saanich, making her one of the longest serving women there. “I’d always wanted to ride the Tour de Rock, but with three teenage boys and a husband with (Victoria Police Department), I needed the support from home, and now I’ve got it, Sawyer said. Cancer has taken a personal toll on her family. “Lung cancer took my mother-in-law eight years ago and my own mom six years ago when it spread to her brain. Rookie or veteran, both police officers have learned a lot about bicycling, and a lot about what makes the Tour de Rock such a demanding but rewarding campaign. “As far as cycling, you couldn’t jump into it with this type of training intensity without such a big goal, Sawyer said. While cycling at this level is new for

Saanich police officers Jana Sawyer, left, and Niki Hodgkinson represent the senior and rookie ranks of the SPD on this year’s Tour de Rock. Hodgkinson, she brings experience to the fundraising component. Oak Bay High can be relied on as one of the highest contributors from the Greater Victoria community, as well as Reynolds secondary. “Reynolds (principal) Alana Charlton was at Oak Bay when I was a student and helped me get the campaign started, Hodgkinson said. Biking too, was Hodgkinson’s initiative. Seniority usually dictates which Saanich Police officers will ride on the Tour de Rock, but the rookie was ready. “Last year when I got hired the first thing I bought was a (road) bike. But I don’t think anyone’s done Tour de Rock in their first year here. I got lucky.
Lucky is something Sawyer hasn’t been. Twice she’s taken a spill, the first a dangerous tumble over the handlebars and onto the pavement down Willis Point Road. It kept her away from training for 10 days. Soon after she returned, Sawyer twisted her ankle trying to detach her cleat from the pedal during a speedy descent near Observatory Hill. Sprained ankle and all, Sawyer toughed it up the team’s ascent of Mount Washington last week, their most exhausting day of training by far. “Once you do (Mt. Washington), you know you can handle any day on the Tour, Sawyer said. “It’s a confidence builder.

Police tickets support positive behaviour between youth, community, and business One of the proactive initiatives that is proving to be very effective in building rapport with persons, specifically youth is a Positive Ticketing Program. Positive Tickets are an avenue or tool that has been utilized by the RCMP to initiate relationships between youth, the community and local businesses. Positive Tickets are donated by local businesses and organizations in the community and administered by members of the Campbell River RCMP Detachment when appropriate. Positive Tickets come in the for m of gift certificates, passes, or discounts. A p e r s o n m ay receive a Positive Ticket from an offi-

The RCMP initiated the Positive Ticketing Program at the beginning of the summer and actively distributed them throughout the summer and it has proven to be very successful and will continue into this upcoming school year.
Police tickets such as these enforce positive behaviours in the community.

SHOW ‘N’ SHINE
FRIDAY, AUGUST 31, 2012 | CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR |
B3
Message from the Chair of the car show committee Thanks to the efforts of our volunteers and sponsors, we expect this 20th Show ‘n’ Shine to be our best ever. There’s excitement with the “Damn Yankee” Nostalgia Funny Car making an appearance, as well as an incredible line up of antiques, hot rods, muscle cars, race cars, sports cars and exotics… definitely something for everyone. Campbell River has an abundance of really cool cars, and often the only time we really get to see them is at this show. Couple this with the participants who travel from far and wide to show there beautiful pieces of rolling art while experiencing our awesome scenery, and you have a weekend to remember. New this year will be our “mini cruise” to show off our great city. We’ll start from the A&W in Discovery Harbour Shopping Centre and head south on the Island Highway. A right on to Erickson will take us to Nelson and Penfield, then north on Alder to Oceanview. This leads us to Ash and Carnegie, then down South Murphy to 1st Ave, up to Alder and north back to Downtown. Set up your lawn chairs on this route and watch the cars cruise by. I can’t say enough about the generous support we’ve received from the local business community. Because it’s our 20th, we decided to increase our usual 10 “Top Picks” to 20. This meant finding 10 new trophy sponsors… it turned out to be an easy job. Campbell River businesses also donate “door prizes” that are given to participants. Special thanks to Tyee Plaza for their “Cruizin’ Crazy” promotion, which include the “Impalas” show band at Spirit Square during our event. Room for parking
all these neat machines is courtesy Tyee Plaza, City of Campbell River (for Shopper’s Row) and Spirit Square. The North Island Cruisers is a car club made up of car enthusiasts from all walks of life… the hobby connects us all. For some it’s the fun of building, others it’s proudly showing, and maybe just the fun of cruising around in a neat vehicle. We invite new members; just bring your passion for cars! The club officially became a “not for profit society” in 1992. The original directors from the incorporation documents were Mike Vroom, Tom Askey, Larry Clayton, John Uzzell and Ben Lindhout. Each year we support local charities and actively promote the car hobby. It’s safe to say that this event has contributed over $25,000 to local charities over the years. – Jim Johnson
Jim & his wife Patti moved to Campbell River seven years ago from Alberta to be close to the grandkids. They love the area and brought along their ’40 Ford (pictured), ’84 Corvette, and the ’37 Ford they dated in way back in the early ’60s. Jim is Chair of this year’s Car Show Committee and Past President of the North Island Cruisers.

Two years ago, Randy Carlson, one of our long time members, suggested “instead of buying trophies… why don’t we make them.” He explained that he had an idea and would bring a sample to our next meeting. Randy used a damaged race car piston & rod and mounted it on a wood base… it was a piece of art! We agreed to have him build these unique trophies. He did a fantastic job. They were the hit of our 2010 & 2011 Show ‘n’ Shines! With time pressures and a tough work schedule Randy Ralph Beaumont asked if someone else could help with this year’s trophies. We are lucky to have some very talented and committed members. Ralph Beaumont accepted the challenge. We had a bit of a surprise for him though. Being our 20th event, we decided to have 20 “Top Picks” instead of 10, as in the former years. He dug in and with 8 Flathead Ford pistons that Ralph had, and a
donation of 12 Lincoln V12 pistons from one of Pete Cowling’s customers, he had the foundation for this year’s “Top Pick” trophies. But this wasn’t all that Ralph had in mind. He created our “Hard Luck” trophy from some damaged connecting rods, a marine compass for the “Long Distance” trophy, a set of handcuffs welded to a giant exhaust valve for our “RCMP Pick” trophy, and he also created a “Hard Luck” keeper trophy for the club out of a damaged 4-71 supercharger “Trophy Guy Too” from a Bonneville race car. Andy Schwanicke supplied the exotic wood for the bases. These are real collectors’ items and we look forward to presenting them to the lucky participants. Thanks to Ralph for his hard work & talent, Randy for his great idea, hard work & talent, and to everyone who contributed to these unique trophies.

A work in progress The car pictured is a ‘69 Camaro half way through a major restoration. Many cars of the muscle era were "unibody" cars – they did not have full frames, only subframes and rear differentials attached to the unibody. In a restoration of a unibody car, there is no frame to separate the body. Therefore the front subframe and the rear differential are removed, a along with all glass, body panels, etc. The body is then mounted on a rotisserie, which is what is you see yo se pictured. Kinda like cooking a roast on you a BBQ but much larger. The body can then be ro otate and any part can be worked on with o rotated th he turn tu of the machine. the Th he ‘69 ‘6 Camaro has been reproduced as a The co omp completely new body shell recently (not this o i original) so the aftermarket provides one, it’s myr a myriad of parts and accessories to build it th he way wa you like and for many different uses. the T c has continuously evolved over the This car la ast 10 1 years as trends change and more last
modern parts are made available. As an example, the engine has been through a few changes internally and the latest change has seen the induction system switched from carburetor to fuel injection. All that remains of the original car is the subframe and body shell. The transmission is an early 90s 4-speed overdrive and differential is from a ‘75 Buick Apollo. The interior is all new but as original. The more recent pictures show the undercarriage and running gear installed. I purchased the car from a co-worker eleven years ago. I know that’s a long time ago but I didn’t have 30 guys working on it for a week like you see in the TV shows. Ya, ya I know it still shouldn’t have taken this long. All of the work with the exception of engine machining and upholstery was done in my garage at home. As this is being written it is finally ready for paint and with a little luck it may just be ready for this show! – Stan Cook

Brent Murray's Damn Yankee The car is an original "Damn Yankee" built in 1977 by Frame Up Engineering and was built as an AA/FC running in the 6.30s at over 240 mph. Brent bought the rolling chassis 1993, sold the body to a restaurant and replaced it with a 23T body. In 2009 he managed to track the body down in California, bought it back and restored it and then mated it up with the original chassis again. The best time to date with his blown alcohol combination is 6.61 @ 205 mph racing in the BB/FC Assoc. out of the Northwest U.S. and B.C.
He drove his own blown alcohol hydro the "Waterworks" with a best of 7.54 @ 156 mph. until 1991 when he attended Frank Hawley's Drag Racing School to learn how to drive funnycars from the two time champion. He currently owns and drives the "Damn Yankee" funnycar, and the "Thriller IV" blown alcohol dragster for his parents with a best of 6.14 @ 230 mph. and fills in when needed to drive a Top Alcohol dragster out of Chilliwack with a best time of 5.43 @ 263 mph.
