This summer’s forest fire season is now officially upon us

After one of the slowest starts in recent years, B.C. forest ¿re crews are enlisting help from neighbouring provinces to battle a late-season surge of ¿res.

Most of the major ¿res are in the sparsely populated northeast corner of B.C., restricting the booming natural gas

industry in the region.

Yukon sent 79 of its ¿re¿ghters to B.C. on the weekend, joining 20 from Saskatchewan and and 35 from Ontario.

Another emerging hotspot is northwestern B.C., where communities were warned Monday of visible smoke along Highway 16. A ¿re near Morice Lake was estimated at 1,200

hectares, burning within a park.

Near the Yukon border, 20 ¿re¿ghters worked on the west and south Àanks of a 3,500-hectare ¿re north of Dease Lake. In addition to the two large ¿res, the Northwest Fire Centre had seven new ¿re starts Sunday, sparked by lightning strikes, and reports of 12 aban-

doned camp¿res over the weekend.

With hot weather through most of August producing high ¿re risk, camp¿res were banned last week in the Kamloops region. Other areas still allowed camp¿res as of Monday, but brush and stubble burning and other open ¿res are banned in most areas of the province.

Deb Graham, event coordinator of the Pink Garden Tea, has been organizing the event over the past three

years to help support breast cancer patients living in the Creston area.

This year Deb and her committee decided to expand the event to two days (July 27 & 28) and to direct their funds to the A Clear View ~ digital mammography campaign.

Deb’s home garden was transformed into a

welcome retreat for tea lovers and featured an array of teas from New York, made with love crepes and fruit skewers, plus a chance to shop at the tea market boutique for a variety of items such as teas, books, angels and hand creams.

MLA, premier stand “shoulder to shoulder” on pipeline issue

by Bill Bennett Recently, Premier Christy Clark spelled out BC’s position on heavy oil pipelines across our province.

BC knows there is a market for Canadian oil in Asia. We also understand the need in Canada to reduce reliance on US markets by developing trade with emerging Asian markets. BC already leads

Canada in developing exports of lumber and coal to Asia and led the Canadian effort to have China designate Canada as a favoured tourism destination.

BC is also developing a multi-billion dollar liqui¿ed natural gas industry for export to Asia which will create thousands of new jobs.

Premier Christy Clark made clear that BC is not opposed to transporting heavy oil from

western Canada to our north-west coast. But we are stating clearly the principles that must guide this sort of development forward: • Successful completion of the formal environmental review processes.

• World-leading marine oil spill response, prevention and recovery systems for British Columbia.

• World-leading practices for land spill pre-

vention, response and recovery systems for British Columbia.

• Legal requirements regarding Aboriginal and treaty rights must be addressed and First Nations must be provided with the opportunities to bene¿t from these projects.

• British Columbia must receive a fair share of the bene¿ts of proposed heavy oil projects that reÀect the risk borne by our citi-

zens.

With regard speci¿cally to bene¿ts -- all British Columbians deserve to receive bene¿ts from an oil pipeline that reÀect the risk to our natural environment. A “fair share of bene¿ts” does not mean BC expects to take bene¿ts some other jurisdiction is due. It is unfortunate some of the media has characterized our respectful statement as a ¿ght over provincial

YOUR CITY....WORKING FOR YOU! Changes to City Garbage Collection to Begin September 1

Starting on September 1, 2012, the City will only collect a maximum of three (3) garbage receptacles per week per household. City Council approved the amendment to the Solid Waste Collection bylaw at their regular meeting of August 13.

The intent of the amendments to the bylaw is to further encourage recycling and composting thereby reducing the amount of garbage required to be disposed of each week.

The Solid Waste Collection and Disposal bylaw also limits the size of receptacles (either containers or bags) to 100 litres and receptacles cannot weigh more than 20 kilograms each. Garbage containers are to have a water tight cover and smooth rim, must be in good structural and sanitary condition and have fixed handles. Plastic bags are to be securely tied closed at the top and be strong enough to withstand normal handling and lifting.

Free Transit Rides to Cranbrook Farmer’s Market This Summer

Enjoy the Cranbrook Farmers’ Market with free transit rides every Saturday morning from June 23 to October 6, 2012. The free ride comes with a catch: each passenger must be carrying a reusable or recycled bag, be traveling to and from downtown Cranbrook and indicate to their transit driver that they are attending the Cranbrook Farmers’ Market.

The City of Cranbrook is funding the free rides for all 16 Saturday markets. The Cranbrook Farmers’ Market runs 9 am to 1 pm, but the free bus rides are from 8:30 am to 1:30 pm. That gives early birds and last minute shoppers’ equal access to transit time.

Trips to and from the Cranbrook Farmers’ Market via BC Transit are for non-transferable passes only.

This innovative partnership between BC Transit and the City of Cranbrook also achieves five specific goals identified in the community’s long term sustainability plan – “Connecting to our Future.”

14th Avenue South Construction Work Expected for Six Weeks

The City of Cranbrook wishes to advise the public using 14th Avenue South, from 10th Street South to 13th Street South, will experience short traffic disruptions beginning on Monday August 13, 2012.

Once full construction starts, there will be road some closures in effect; primarily 14th Avenue South from 12th Street South to 13th Street South for approximately six weeks.

BA Blacktop and crews contracted by the City of Cranbrook will be continuing with the road improvement work started in 2011. Motorists are asked to please follow any detours in place as directed for the duration of the work.

The City of Cranbrook apologizes for any inconvenience and appreciates the patience of residents as these temporary traffic closures are in place.

East Kootenay Foundation for Health visited the Creston Valley Hospital this week to welcome the arrival of a colonoscope which was purchased thanks to a funding partnership with EKFH and the Creston – Kootenay Foundation, Interior Health and the Creston Tuck Shop.

Endoscopy at the Creston Valley Hospital is a very valuable service to the citizens of Creston Valley and patients that also travel from other centers (Kimberley & Cranbrook) to have the procedure performed.

Creston’s operating room is well equipped, the endoscopy equipment is state of the art and the purchase of this colonoscope replaces an older scope that now gives the hospital a full complement of high de¿nition scopes.

This service enables patients to have their scopes in a timely fashion and combats the issue of waiting times for services performed at larger centers.

Fabulous fungi from your kitchen?

Right now, gardens are starting to supply us with red, ripe tomatoes, gorgeous green beans and other beautiful, fresh vegetables.

Growing your own is a fabulous experience, especially when it comes to harvest time.

But what about growing one of my family’s favourites... mushrooms? Honestly, up until our purchasers returned from a recent shopping trip, the thought had never even entered my mind.

What they brought back is what might be the most fun and interactive way to have a fresh meal of oyster mushrooms. ‘Back to the Roots’ Mushroom Kits have everything you need to grow those tasty fungi right on your kitchen counter. Inside a brown and light-blue cardboard box, roughly the size of a large juice container is an insert with coffee grounds, oyster mushroom spores and a mister.

Growing the mushrooms could not be easier; you simply remove the perforated front cover to expose the insert and cut a crossed slit into the plastic bag. Take out the insert and submerge it in a bucket of water for 24 hours. Placed back in the carton, the mushroom kit should be put in a bright spot with indirect light. Now the insert has to be misted twice daily with the provided mister.

The ďŹ rst few days, there won’t be much happening in the box, but after about a week, the ďŹ rst tiny mushroom caps will pop out and after about 10 days, the oyster mushrooms will be ready to be harvested.

But the fun isn’t over yet. After you’ve harvested one side, take the panel out of the back side of the carton and repeat the process to get another batch. Two batches is what the growers from ‘Back to the Roots’ guarantee, but you can try for even more, just keep on misting.

Once the kit is all spent, you can use the growing material as a soil amendment in your garden. And this – besides the fun way of growing delicious mushrooms – is what makes ‘Back to the Roots’ so cool. The kit uses spent coffee grounds as a growing medium and the company is on pace to collect, divert and reuse about 3.6 million pounds of coffee grounds this year. At about one and a half pounds of mushrooms per kit, ‘Back to the Roots’ expects to help families grow over 135,000 pounds of fresh mushrooms at home.

The idea for the mushroom kits was developed by two graduate students at the UC Berkley. Their ďŹ rst test batches were grown in a fraternity kitchen, but now the two are full-time mushroom farmers. They stay connected with all the kitchen-sill gardeners through their interactive website, full of tips and tricks as well as tasty recipes.

Cranbrook Fire and Emergency Services initiated a Hazardous Material program approximately three years

ago, at the direction of City Council. This program provides an improved local capacity to deal with many issues such as leaking chemicals, toxic atmospheres and unknown or suspected hazardous materials. The next closest hazardous materials teams to Cranbrook are located in Calgary and Vancouver.

To date Cranbrook Fire and Emergency Services has responded to several incidents of note including: • chlorine gas in a large retail store, • chlorine leaks within City facilities, • an apartment in which an unknown substance had been discharged utilizing a pressurized vessel, • A large propane cylinder breech, • unknown chemicals which had been mixed and reacted with one another.

In each of these cases ¿re¿ghters were better able to de¿ne safe zones, limit the number of evacuations and resolve the incidents sooner than was possible before the program came into effect. Often, the situation can be remedied by simple actions once the appropriate type and level of personal protective equipment can be identi¿ed, allowing ¿re¿ghters to safely enter the site.

Also, when there is little or no threat from an inert substance this can be readily identi¿ed in the ¿eld, minimizing disruptions caused to the community due to the event.

Round up will take care of those old tires in your yard Residents in the Cranbrook area will be able to recycle their old tires during a one-day tire round up this week.

The event is being organized by Tire Stewardship BC, the company that oversees the tire recycling program across the Province, and will be held on Saturday, August 25 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Kal Tire in Cranbrook.

“The last round up was held in 2010 in Kimberley and we collected over 35 tons of tires in six hours,” says RDEK Communications Manager, Loree Duczek.

“I encourage everyone with tires sitting around to take advantage of this round up to get rid of their old, unused, or unwanted tires for free.”

There will be no limit on the number of tires that can be dropped off during the event, and the following tires will be accepted on or off rim: PLTS (passenger , light truck) MTS ( medium truck or semi-truck tires)

“The staff at Kal Tire will also be collecting donations for the Cranbrook Food Bank during the event,” adds Duczek.

The tires collected will be taken to Western Rubber in the Delta

area where they will be ground into crumb rubber or coloured landscaping mulch. Some of the products the crumb is used in include playgrounds and walkways, athletic tracks, synthetic turf ¿elds, Àooring and

mats.

Family makes personal donation of $10,000 to A Clear View Just over a year ago East Kootenay Foundation for Health was working on its marketing plan for the A Clear View ~ digital mammography campaign.

That plan included the concept of Faces of the Campaign and the ¿rst two individuals to step forward to showcase their story were Sue Selby and her daughter Stephanie. A trip to Idlewild Park had photographers Chris Pullen and Cassidy Shankowsky of Cranbrook Photo pulling out all the stops to capture the essence of the spirit of a breast cancer survivor and one of her closest supporters.

What wasn’t known at the time of the photo shoot was that the very next day Sue and Stephanie would be making their way to Calgary for Sue to undergo a stereotactic biopsy since the equipment was not available in Cranbrook.

Her courage, hope and strength to face breast cancer a second time

left an indelible mark on Sue’s husband Roger.

“Sue has always been a very positive person and facing breast cancer not once but twice she has moved me deeply as she has refused to let this disease affect her life negatively.”

Roger also shared with Donna Grainger that his wife’s ¿rst biopsy was very dif¿cult.

When she returned from Calgary he distinctly remembers Sue saying that the stereotactic equipment had made the second biopsy so much easier that she wanted to help someone else and to make a difference now through not only her pro¿le support of the campaign but also with a $500 gift of ¿nancial support.

Fast track to a year later and Roger Selby never forgot those words “to help someone else”. The Selby family have recently decided to sell their Fort Steele ranch and move into Cranbrook. It is at this time that Roger did

something remarkable for the woman who he feels sets a stunning example of living each and every day to the fullest even with breast cancer.

Roger, in honour of Sue and his family who stood ¿rm beside her donated $10,000 to the A Clear View campaign to help all those other “someone elses”.

East Kootenay Foundation for Health had the honour and privilege to return to Idlewild Park this week to have the talented Cassidy Shankowsky once again capture the essence of the spirit of a breast cancer survivor and this time with a bevy of her supporters ~ the Selby family.

“The journey with the A Clear View campaign has taken me many places but one of the most treasured moments was to witness the love of a family who see their way clear to give back to community, to others with a breast cancer diagnosis and to a campaign that

The Ktunaxa Nation Council have purchased the Central School Building in Cranbrook to consolidate services and promote ef¿ciency.

Submitted The Ktunaxa Nation Council announced that they have purchased the old Central School Building in Cranbrook British Columbia. The Central School Building will become an of¿ce for the Ktunaxa Nation Council (KNC), and house up to 150 staff members between the KNC other af¿liated organizations.

“We have been looking for a space that could accommodate our growing organization and its many staff members,” said Kathryn Teneese, Ktunaxa Nation Chair.

“Currently we have many dispersed of¿ces, in a variety of locations, and this will allow us to consolidate and centralize services, which will promote resource ef¿ciencies, improve communications, and allow better support across all the sectors which make up the Ktunaxa Nation Council.”

In a recent analysis, ¿g-

ures show that the Ktunaxa inject more than $30 million annually into the regional economy. Most revenue is generated is from consulting and professional services, along with various Ktunaxa owned enterprises, with less than 3% of core funding coming from AANDC (Department of Indian Affairs).

The KNC is governed by a nine member Executive Council, which is comprised of the Chiefs of the four Canadian Ktunaxa communities and ¿ve Council Chairs which represent the sectors of the KNC: Corporate; Economic; Social Investment; Lands and Resources; and Traditional Knowledge and Language.

Many Ktunaxa went to the school there when it was active, and the building is centrally located in the Ktunaxa Traditional Territory in the lands now known as Cranbrook. The purchase of the Central School Building represents a continuum of the history of Ktunaxa on its lands, and is symbolic of Ktunaxa efforts in moving towards self-governance.”

The building, built in 1909, will become a centre for cultural gatherings and will house a Ktunaxa Nation Museum, for which resource planning is already underway. The building will also have a dedicated space for Ktunaxa Elders to discuss and share cultural values and history. The building will be home to many af¿liated organizations including Ktunaxa Kinbasket Treaty Society, St. Eugene Mission Resort Holdings Ltd., Ktunaxa Holdings Ltd., Traditional Knowledge Language Enrichment Society, Kootenay Aboriginal Business Development Agency (KABDA) and FlexiNET Broadband Inc. All pre-purchase inspections, including building and building systems, structural, environmental, air quality and ¿re inspection have been concluded, and date of possession will be October 1st.

There is some minor external restoration & repair work to the brickwork that will take place immediately, and there are plans for upgrades to the heating and cooling systems in the future.

A Grand Opening will take later this fall, at which time the Ktunaxa will welcome the citizens of Cranbrook and surrounding region to join in the celebration.
