Harold Jahn got a good deal on the former Elk Falls mill property and now the city is hoping to get a better tax return from the industrial lands. “If this proceeds and development occurs, it will be very significant for the citizens of Campbell River,” said city manager Andy Laidlaw. Jahn, owner of Pacifica Deep Sea Terminals, signed an agreement last week with Catalyst Paper to buy the 400-acre property for $8.6 million. According to BC Assessment, the property is currently valued at $10 million. The Edmonton-based businessman, who operates three industrial parks in Alberta, wants to manufacture lithium batteries, algae-based solar cells and develop other “green” energy initiatives on the site of the former pulp and paper mill which closed in 2010. Sailor misses city, hits rocks The sailor ran aground at approximately 10:30 p.m. and it wasn’t until 11:55 p.m. when help arrived. Coast Guard were called at 10:50 p.m. and tried to get there sooner, but the skipper, the only person on board, didn’t exactly know where he had beached. According to Potter, the man said he was on Yucalta Bank, located just north of Quadra Island’s Cape Mudge lighthouse. But when that proved false he thought he was at

A GPS unit and some generic maps just isn’t good enough for boaters cruising the Inside Passage. A Seattle skipper found this out the hard way Tuesday night after beaching his 33-foot sailboat Coconut on the rocks at Shelter Point. “He was high and dry,” said Sean Potter, officer-in-charge of the Coast Guard vessel Cape Palmerston.

In addition to the Cape Palmerston, the rigged hull inflatable was also dispatched. Potter said the crew aboard the inflatable did a good job “picking their way” through the rocks to come up alongside the Coconut. After the boat was secured, the tide was
low enough to allow the skipper to walk to shore. He spent the night on the back deck of a local resident’s home in order to keep a lookout on his sailboat. “He’ll be there for a couple of tides. Hopefully tonight (Wednesday) he can get it out,” said Potter. The boat was gone by Thursday morning. The Coast Guard officer also advised it’s a good plan to have specific area charts for the Inside Passage.

heldon Crawford is accustomed to challenging himself. As a military police officer at CFB Esquimalt and with a 2008 tour of Afghanistan under his belt, the 25-year-old corporal understands the mental and physical strength required to get the job done. But when he trades in his uniform for cycling shorts this fall to conquer the 1,000-kilometre Canadian Cancer Society Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock, Crawford will be thinking of the hundreds of B.C. children diagnosed with cancer who struggle with much greater challenges every day. “I remember "I remember seeing the Tour de Rock, it was seeing the Tour de a big thing growing up on the Island," Crawford Rock. "It's an amazing cause, and cancer is that someone so young shouldn't have thing growing up on something to go through." the Island.� Crawford is one of two military police officers participating in this year's tour – the other is – Cpl. Sheldon Cpl. David Thompson, who works out of CFB Crawford Comox. The roster includes 14 police officers, two members of the media and two special guests. Since its inception in 1998, Tour de Rock has raised more than $16.6 million for the Canadian Cancer Society. The money is earmarked for pediatric cancer research and also helps fund Camp Goodtimes, a medically supervised summer retreat for kids dealing with cancer. "It gives the kids and their families the opportunity to have fun and not worry about chemotherapy and all their medical appointments," Crawford said after he visited the Maple Ridge camp last week. Crawford's personal fundraising goal is $12,000, although he hopes to raise more He's already managed to collect $7,000, including $4,000 from a concert at the Pacific Fleet Club in Victoria. "It's an excellent opportunity to give back and see some of the Island," he said.

Forest minister sees opportunity KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
Forestry Minister Steve Thomson sees “tremendous opportunity” in Campbell River when it comes to bolstering the economy through the area’s natural resources. A good starting point, according to Thomson, is the recently announced Vancouver Island Exploration Geoscience Project, which will conduct an airborne magnetic survey of the region. The survey, in tandem with the BC Jobs Plan and expected to start this month, is designed to gather geoscience data in and around Campbell River, Port Hardy, Port McNeill, Alert Bay, Port Alice and Zeballos. The information is supposed to help attract mineral exploration and provide communities with information on the geology of their area. Thomson, minister of forests, lands and natural resource operations, said it will be a big boon to Campbell River. “If you look at the history of Geoscience in B.C., it really does help identify where opportunities are and it’s helped move progress forward,” said

Thomson who was in Campbell River Friday to speak with city council, the Chamber of Commerce, and other community business representatives. “Certainly, as there’s development and exploration, if projects move forward, it will generate jobs and activity. I see tremendous opportunity for this part of the province here (to) build the tax base. I know Rivercorp’s key goal is to re-build the industrial tax base here.” The recent agreement between Catalyst and Pacifica Deep Sea

Terminals to sell the former Elk Falls mill site may be a step in that direction. “I think it’s an exciting announcement for Campbell River and I know that the community has had a long interest in moving forward with that specific site,” Thomson said. “I think it does have a significant opportunity for jobs here in Campbell River. The role of our ministry will be in permitting and authorizing, depending on the activity there.” One of the key goals of Thomson’s ministry is to reduce application
backlogs for industrial work. The ministry set an ambitious target of reducing backlogs in the Land Act and Water Act authorizations by 50 per cent as of Dec. 31 of this year. Thomson was happy to report the ministry is well “on its way to achieving that.” The opening of a FrontCounter BC office in Campbell River this year has contributed to the ministry’s success. The office is a onestop shop for the natural resource industry’s permitting and authorization needs and is aimed at providing easier access to government services to enable quicker job creation. Thomson also touched on the possibility of a high-speed sawmill to re-energize the region’s natural resource sector. Thomson said the idea originally came up in the BC Jobs Plan forum held in Campbell River in January but it was not identified as a top three priority. However, he said it is an “interesting” idea. Thomson is confident Campbell River will land on its feet. “(It’s) well-positioned on the coast to be part of the growth of the industry.”

Campbell River bus service grows to meet demand KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
Campbell River’s transit system brings in more revenue and costs less to run than those in communities of similar size, according to a review of BC Transit. An August report from the BC Transit independent review panel shows Campbell River to be one of Transit’s top performers – an honour that has prompted an expansion of bus service in the city. “The system, in comparison to others in the 20,000 to 50,000 (population) size is performing well,” said Drew Hadfield, the city’s transportation manager. “The ridership compared to population is high, the cost per hour to operate is below average, and the service utilization is highest in this group.”
According to the report, which looks at 2010/2011 figures, Campbell River had a ridership of 558,885 while the similar-sized communities of Vernon and Penticton had riderships of 37,600 and 29,200 respectively. In the Comox Valley, ridership sat at 45,700. Hadfield said since those figures were identified, Campbell River has increased its ridership by nine per cent. Campbell River also had the lowest total operating expenses at $2.12 million while Vernon spent $2.46 million and Penticton $2.37 million. The Comox Valley spent $2.66 million. The city has also seen increased revenue from public transit, which Hadfield said goes directly to offset the cost for the city’s portion of the system. Campbell River gen-
erated $602,059 in total operating revenues while Vernon brought in $613,564, Penticton $521,152 and the Comox Valley $585,728. As an indication of Campbell River’s success, BC Transit announced Wednesday that it will be adding evening service on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights as well as providing an extra 30-foot long bus. “We are inspired by the growing number of people who are choosing transit in Campbell River,” said Manuel Achadinha, BC Transit president and CEO. “By adding service hours and another bus we are ensuring transit is more efficient and effective than ever before.” According to BC Transit’s Annual Report, the city was one of the province’s top performers and recorded 609,000 trips
in 2011/12. “Growing the use of local bus service is good news that indicates we’re offering routes and times Campbell River residents consider a viable option,” said Mayor Walter Jakeway. “More people taking the bus means that the service is meeting the community’s need. As bus usage grows, the more service will improve.” Service is currently provided by a local contractor, Watson and Ash, and not only runs throughout the city but also stretches to Area D (Crawford Road-Oyster Bay area) in partnership with the Strathcona Regional District. A transit connection to the Comox Valley system at Oyster River allows riders to travel as far south as Buckley and the Hornby/ Denman Island ferry terminal.

ICBC mishandled The BC Liberals have completely mishandled ICBC, and the proof came last week, when a review showed that the company has been hiring boatloads of senior managers and paying them more each year — with the We say: Tax grab government apparently oblivious. There are 32 per cent more hidden in the managers than in 2007, and they guise of insurance are paid (as a group) 70 per cent more than managers received in costs 2007. Fifty-four of them made more than $200,000 each in 2011. The Liberals insisted, on taking office in 2001, that ICBC didn’t need to
be privatized, nor did there need to be complete competition in the auto insurance sector. They have also insisted, especially in recent years, that substantial dividends from ICBC go back to the shareholder — the government. This means that all ICBC customers, and that’s everyone who owns a vehicle, are paying additional insurance premiums to boost government revenues. It’s a tax grab, hidden in the guise of insurance costs. The government has now, very belatedly, said ICBC meeds to cut its management costs and manager compensation. This comes just after ICBC has boosted insurance rates by 11.2 per cent.
The simple fact is this: ICBC is being used by government for all sorts of purposes that are far afield from its ostensible role as a public car insurance company. This isn’t new — the NDP did this with ICBC back in its earliest days. But it certainly points out that the Liberals are just as good as the NDP at mismanaging Crown corporations and sticking taxpayers with extra costs. ICBC needs to be privatized. There is no real need to have government operate a car insurance company that forces all drivers to buy at least basic car insurance. – Black Press

Another pole plant issue? In the August 15 edition of the Mirror it sounded like I was the only person opposing Inland Kenworths proposed relocation. Not so. I have polled the residents of the area and none of them feel it is an appropriate location for this business. Inland Kenworth is unquestionably “heavy industrial.” The land is zoned Commercial 4 which says some light industrial usage is permitted. The sale of trucks and accessories is compliant and we have no problem with that. To let them in there is to invite another “Pole Plant” bylaw issue, as the noise and fume pollution will assuredly spill over into the nearby residential area. Mr. Morrison of Kenworth says you can breathe the exhaust from the new Kenworths. I invite him to do so, I’d like to sit upwind and watch. What he says is misleading though.The majority of equipment they work on is older and have no exhaust scrubbers. Air Care has never been a big priority with the logging and mining industry. Just one ferry ride away from losing my mind

Many Islanders will sympathize with the Surrey senior who lost his cool in the ferry line-up last Sunday. Stuck on Nanaimo’s Brechin Hill, leading to Departure Bay, the 65-yearold was told there was a three-sailing wait and he would have to leave and come back a couple hours later because there was no more room on the hill. At this point frustration reached a boiling point as he pulled his 1998 Volvo onto the sidewalk. Things only got worse when the RCMP stepped in, asked the driver for his licence, but instead he drove away. The cops found him shortly later and, according to Mounties, the officer was so concerned about the safety of others that he jumped into the Volvo and put it in park.
The man was arrested for obstruction and, by this time, I suspect, it was more than a three-sailing wait. You can’t condone fleeing from police, but I can appreciate the man’s state of mind. I was just coming off the ferry from Vancouver as the sidewalk drama was unfolding. I didn’t see the commotion because I was intent on getting the heck out of strip-mall-city. I too was more than a little frustrated with BC Ferries after arriving at the Horseshoe Bay terminal at 11:30 a.m. With no $17.50 reservation, I was shunted to the line-up for the low caste of society and waited for more than three hours until finally driving onto the Queen of Cowichan. It was almost five o’clock when we pulled into Nanaimo. This made me
consider the absurdity of travelling a “whopping” 25 kilometres on one of the busiest ferry routes in North America. To put it into perspective, five-anda-half hours was an hour longer than it took me to fly from Toronto to Vancouver. While in Toronto, I drove 1,000 kilometres to see relatives in Louisville, Kentucky. The drive took 10 hours, less than double the time it took to cross the Strait of Georgia. It’s little wonder more people don’t lose their minds, like the Surrey senior, when they travel to or from Vancouver with BC Ferries. One thing the police failed to mention was whether this man was given a guarantee he would be on the third sailing. I’m not sure I would want to leave either “for a couple hours” then
return to find out I’m now waiting five sailings. Ridiculous. I know there were some mechanical difficulties that day with one of the ships, but the route is busy seven days a week. Why oh why the ferry corporation doesn’t add another vessel to this route is a mystery few of us will ever solve. And it’s not the price of the ferry ride which bugs me, it’s the seemingly endless waiting. In fact, next time I’ll pay more to fly to my airline connection and basically save myself a day of vacation. I know there are more people who think the same and surely BC Ferries knows this too. If they can improve the food on BC Ferries, they can at least try to improve service.

Pole plant treatment We have great neighbours Continued from A8 yet. Diesel fumes have been proven to be highly carcinogenic, not to mention stinky. Mr. Morrison also said they are forced to work outside at their current location. What happens if their business grows and they have to do it again? How many shifts do they run? They won’t turn work away, so we will get to listen to it all night as well. It has been my experience that they will paint a rosey picture of how it will be, but once in, they will do as they please and City Hall will do nothing about it. I trust them as far as I can throw a Kenworth. We had the “Pole Plant “treatment in this neighborhood about 10 years ago. I know how it goes. We have an Industrial Park in Campbell River, I suggest they use it. This is precisely the kind of business it was intended for. There is an abundance of other land in the area as well and we need another industrial park. Menzies Bay and to the west of the inland highway come to mind. I realize that we will get this business rammed down our throats like the people on Duncan Bay Road. I just wanted to be able to say “I told you so” It’s rare that I don’t mind being wrong, but in this case I’d be glad to be. A lot of people stand to have their lives ruined. We have great neighbours on Cortez Road. After the Mirror ran my letter last week about the thief who went through our car and stole my unique Zippo lighter, the story was passed around on various Campbell River Facebook groups and went viral. Then a few days later, there was a knock on our door. One of our neighbours up the street presented my wife with my stolen lighter!
Apparently she had surprised the thief in the act of breaking into her car after her dog woke her up. The thief dropped his loot, including my lighter, and ran. After our neighbour saw the letter on Facebook, she knew where to return it. It is great to know that we are surrounded by good neighbours. We all watch out for each other. So thieves, beware. A nine-month old baby boy battling a rare form of adult leukemia underwent a successful bone marrow transplant on Monday. Eli Perry, who was diagnosed with cancer when he was just three months old, received the transplant from his four-and-a-half year-old brother Isaac Perry. The boys’ aunt, Jodi Perry, said both boys are doing well. “Eli is expected to continue to do well over the next few days and then as I understand it, the fight really begins,” she said. “His chemo will kick in at that point and bring his immune system back to the bottom, and his mouth and other soft digestive tissues will start to get burn type sores and his body will try to fight against

It is required by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) that you maintain 1 a mileage log. If the CRA had their way you would be required to maintain a log of every trip you make, stating Faye Reynan the beginning and ending mileage for each trip, describing whether it was for business or personal. The mileage log can be as simple as a calendar. You can note on each day when you went to a client, or the bank, or to see the accountant and mark the km’s beside each appointment. If you write down the beginning odometer on December 31 each year, you will have your total km’s for the year and then by adding up the km’s on your calendar you will have your business km’s. You are then allowed to deduct that portion of your fuel, insurance repairs, and some other vehicle expenses. Starting in 2009 CRA auditors accept a logbook for a sample period of time (it must be a representative period for the whole year not your busiest 3 months), rather than the whole year, to represent how the motor vehicle is used, and support motor vehicle expense claims and taxable bene¿t calculations. Another thing to note when wanting to “write off” vehicle expenses make sure you carry the correct insurance. If you are audited and you say you use your vehicle 90% for business (backed up by your vehicle log) but your insurance is for pleasure use only the auditor is going to ask who you are lying to; CRA or ICBC? If you are using it for business then carry business insurance. What if you have a Limited Company? If you have a limited company you will want to discuss vehicle expenses with your bookkeeper and or accountant. You will still need to keep a log!

Mayor Walter Jakeway has a plan to spread the wealth once construction crews for upcoming projects come to town. Jakeway wants the city to consider putting up contractors in residential suites when
two major projects – the new hospital and John Hart Dam generating station replacement – get underway. “With major projects coming up, there’s going to be lots of people coming up here,” Jakeway said at a council meeting Aug. 14. “A great way to spread some income around town (would be) to get
staff to look at accommodation in suites in homes.” Coun. Claire Moglove agreed it was a creative way to accommodate construction workers, as an alternative to hotels and RVs. She said it would be worthwhile to take a look at the city’s zoning bylaw as it relates to secondary suites

and possibly consider changes to make it easier for homeowners to develop those suites. Coun. Andy Adams made a motion asking city staff to provide council with the city’s R1 (residential) and R1A (residential with secondary suite) zoning regulations. But Moglove said there was no rush to
report back. “In terms of timing, these people are not coming for at least a year,” said Moglove, who added council does not need the report back immediately. “Having said that, I do think this is something we should look at in any event.” The John Hart Dam project is still undergo-
ing a review by the BC Utilities Commission and should be complete by spring 2013. If it is approved, the estimated $1-$1.2 billion project could get underway by summer 2013. Hydro plans to have the first replacement generating unit in service by 2017, with project completion in 2018.

Passion for kids leads to Africa BRIAN KIERAN

Arelene Leduc is on a quest to find her “passion.” That process has been like a proverbial light bulb turning on. “Children are my passion,” says the Campbell River resident. Her challenge has been the realization that her passion was meant to unfold in the shape of a mission to the continent of Africa to save and nurture orphans in Malawi. Using her own resources Leduc has established a fledgling orphanage on the outskirts of Blantyre, a city of 728,000 considered the commercial capital of Malawi, a peaceful country by African standards. The Chikondi One Heart Angels Orphanage opened in July and is home to twin fouryear-old girls, Shakila and Fidess, found starving in a settlement that was a two days journey away. Chikondi means “love” in the Chiciwa language. “These two girls are our angels. When we found them they were in such a state of malnutrition that they were not expected to

Now, she is seeking the help of this community to grow her orphanage into a thriving compound that will provide food, medicine and education for 100 children in the next two years. two years ago when I travelled to Lilongwe, Malawi to volunteer for a month at an orphanage that housed 69 children,” Leduc says. “Words cannot describe the feelings I experienced spending time with the children playing, giving the gift of my time unconditionally. “The joy, love and peace I felt everyday ... I knew in my heart that I wanted to open my own orphanage in Africa.” Leduc returned to Malawi last year and spent three months visiting various orphanages. “When you experience the poverty there, you’re never the same,” she says. She is planning a third “mission” journey to Malawi in October. The fundraiser on Sept. 8 starts at 7 p.m. and features two local bands. The $25 ticket includes a BBQ.

She paid her two dollars, was given a driver’s licence and then learned to drive. I learned in my teens as well, studying the driving guide, took a twenty question test, spent some time as a learner, passed a 20 minute road CHEV TYEE CHEV test and I had TYEE my licence. My children both took driver training during their Learner stage because I could afford it and felt it was an important life skill. They passed a 25 question test, spent time in the Learner stage, were tested, moved on to the Novice stage, were tested and then got their full licence. Quite a difference, isn’t it? I would be willing to bet that all of us, the middle aged or older better than average driver crowd, would be hard pressed to equal or better the score of a newly minted class 5 driver on ICBC’s on line driver’s test. I base that remark on what I see happening around me when I drive and the correspondence that I have had with visitors to my DriveSmartBC web site. Many drivers have failed to maintain the knowledge of the road rules that they need to drive safely and properly. In addition, the rules have changed since I obtained my class 5. I challenge you! Visit www.icbc.com and look for the link to the Practice Knowledge Test on the home page below the green tab labelled New Driver. Take the full test and answer all 25 questions that will be presented to you at random. Did you answer at least 80% of the questions correctly? If not and you were trying to obtain your Learner’s, you would be told to go home and study some more because you didn’t have sufficient knowledge of the rules to start learning to drive. Good luck! Find turns employee into hero KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
An employee at The Home Depot was helping a customer look for his credit card when he discovered a lot more than he had bargained for. What he found would turn him into a hero. Kevin Fisher, an employee at The Home Depot for nearly two years, was helping a customer price out tractors just outside the store’s exit doors last Friday afternoon
when the customer realized his credit card had fallen out of his back pocket. The search turned up the customer’s card from beside a row of John Deere tractors while Fisher found what appeared to be a bag of garbage. “I tur ned around and saw a white bag,” Fisher said. “It looked like a white paper bag that you would get from the pharmacy. I thought ‘someone must have lost their medicine’ so I picked
it up.” What he found in the bag was something he will never forget. “I put my hand in and saw a $100 bill,” Fisher said in disbelief. “I flicked the $100 bill open and saw at least five $100 bills folded together. I thought ‘wow, someone is in need of this money’ so I didn’t hesitate and turned it in.” The middle-aged Fisher gave the money to his manager and about half an hour later, he got a call to
come to the front of the store. There at one of the checkouts was a frantic Denise Stewart, who had just gone to pay, looked into her purse for her money only to find it gone. “I had saved up, months and months of saving,” said Stewart who had $600 in the envelope – some of which was a gift from her dad to redo her rotting patio. “If it wasn’t for (Fisher), my renovations would never have gotten done, it’s in progress and prog-
ress would have come to a screeching halt. He was the hero.” Stewart was impressed and incredibly thankful that Fisher turned in the money. “That would have been just an incredible windfall for that guy,” Stewart said. “He could have just put it in his pocket and never said a word. No one would have been the wiser. I couldn’t thank him enough. There still is integrity in this world.”

Celebrate brain differences at Spirit Square To p b r a i n - b a s e d learning facilitator, Gary Anaka, in his engaging and interactive style, will speak at a free community event packed with fun activities for the entire family. Anaka, while discussing brain health and care, has the uncanny ability to make people laugh. He reminds us of those familiar situations such as frantically looking for our glasses only to find them on top of our head. Many of us can relate to these ‘forgetful’ moments in life, but do we know what it is like to live with a significant brain difference? The Celebration of Brain Differences is intended as a light hearted event to bring awareness to a serious topic; Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). FASD is an umbrella term describing the range of permanent birth defects caused by prenatal exposure to alcohol. It is best described as a brain based disability with behavioural symptoms. We typically acknowledge that life creates challenges for people with mobility impairments or visible developmental disabilities, but what about people who live with an invisible brain difference such as FASD?
Children with FASD are continuously being told they could, “do better if they just tried harder” says Jenny McLeod, FASD Key Worker for the Campbell River and District Association for Community Living. For these children, the emotional consequences of knowing that they are not living up to others’ expecta-
tions can be, “more crippling then the disability itself ” emphasized McLeod. We often describe people living with disabilities as having, “special needs,” when in reality we all have the same needs, “to be loved and accepted for who we are” added McLeod. This year in Campbell River, Inter national FASD Awareness
day is about accepting brain differences and recognizing strengths. McLeod wants the community to know that this event is for everyone, “we could all benefit from learning how to enhance the functioning of our brains.” The event will open at 2 p.m. with the songs of ‘Inclusion,’ a group of music-lovers who

The invisibility of FASD can be attributed the fact that people with FASD look the same as everyone else and come across as more capable than they actually are. This creates expectations for the person to perform and behave at a level that is beyond their ability. Often the biggest challenge people with FASD face is that family, community, and professionals fail to recognize the extent of the disability.

Campbell River Living Cirque du Soleil recruits Heather Gordon Murphy’s dance expertise BRIAN KIERAN CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
T
here’s nothing like growing up in Campbell River to prepare a girl for life on the world stage with the famous Cirque du Soleil. That’s how the city’s premiere dance instructor and artistic director Heather Gordon Murphy sees her world as she packs her bags for Azerbaijan in Eastern Europe where she will work with the Cirque team mounting a 400-person “spectacle” at the Sept. 22 opening ceremonies
of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) Under 17 Women’s World Cup of Soccer tournament. Murphy, 54, originally a dance instructor, is well known in the city for her work with the Shoreline Music Theatre Society, Sweet Tease Burlesque, River City Players, Raincoast Creative Performing Arts and the Tidemark Youth Theatre. “I look at Campbell River as sort of the wild west,” Murphy says. “Because we’re here we have to adapt.
We become so capable here. We tend to create things to happen or we go crazy.” It is that ability to create, to adapt, “to build a stage and create a skit on it” that appealed to the Cirque, she says. It was also her work with Australia’s David Atkins Enterprises, the company chosen to mount the opening and closing ceremonies at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. “I learned to do everything from operating a fork lift to putting a 1,000 people on
the floor with snowboards, to standing in for the Four Tenors for sound checks and I worked my butt off.” It was at the 2010 Olympics that Murphy learned the skill of choreographing mass groups. It involved the complex task of matching the carefully-scripted movements of 1,000 volunteers to ensure they corresponded with every changing bar of music. In Baku, Azerbaijan, Murphy will be part of a four-person team helping to choreograph 400 local
volunteers for a sevenminute segment in the ceremonies. “It’s a great gig. I know why I got the job. You have to be low maintenance, not get flustered, just dive in and do it.” The ceremonies and games will be televised in more than 150 countries. Murphy says she is expected to be on the floor with the 400 performers and has already submitted her clothing sizes for her costume. “Watch for me ... I’ll be the zebra,” she says.

n August 21, 1947 the nurses at Duncan’s King’s Daughters Hospital named their one pound, four ounce new arrival “Persistence,” a fitting moniker for one of the tiniest babies ever born in BC. Sixty-five years later Grace Ewart has celebrated her landmark birthday with husband Clarence, sister Edith, care givers and friends at the Ironwood Place in Camp-
bell River. Grace, born two and a half months premature, was big news around the province in the 1940s. At the time of her birth her doctor, C.H. BeevorPotts, was optimistic that her “stubborn” will to survive and her stamina would carry her through the first critical days of life outside the womb. One month later Grace had gained eight ounces. Hospital matron Bertha
Jenkins said: “She is doing splendidly and is going to survive. We are going to see that she does live.” By October the hospital staff was describing the 33 ounce baby as “chubby.” Community Living BC care giver Allan Richard has been at Grace’s side for seven years and says she fits her maternity ward nickname Persistence “to a T.” “She’s one feisty woman,” Richard
says. “She fights daily to keep her independence.” While Grace does not fully comprehend how rare her birth was, she is very aware that her life is special. Her survival against incredible odds has placed her in a select group. Dr. Edward Bell of the University of Iowa keeps a database of the world’s smallest surviving one-pound babies. It contains less than 150 dating back to 1936.

After what was a very short ďŹ ght against cancer, she is in no pain. She is survived by her mom Iona Marriott, her brother Larry Strachan, her partner Doug Groseclose, her children Clinton (Candace) and Renee Armstrong, her grandchildren Jackson, Kayla and Austin, family, friends and her amazing Special Olympic athletes. Local Special Olympian an inspiration Special Olympian Hazen Meade can add another accomplishment to his resume. Meade, a hard-working Campbell River athlete, is a recipient of the 2012 Special Olympics in BC Athletic Achievement Award. Meade has made giant strides in his 15 years with the local’s snowshoeing team, and is a deserving winner. He started out as an athlete who weighed 220 pounds and in 1999 found himself unable to qualify for Team BC like three of his teammates. In one race at the 1999 Special Olympics BC Winter Games, he fell just short of the finish line and, unprompted by comments from anyone else, critiqued himself for his weight. That was a big moment of change for Meade, launching him into 13 years of dedicated training and impressive personal development. He has made significant improvements to his strength and physical
conditioning, showed attentive adherence to training programs, and racked up impressive achievements in his racing, as well as losing more than 60 pounds. Meade’s hard work paid off when he qualified for Team BC in 2004 and 2008, and he brought home many medals and lessons that spurred him on to fresh efforts. He earned two silver medals and one bronze at the 2004 Special Olympics Canada Winter Games, and he captured another silver and two bronze at the next National Winter Games in 2008. He also showed his impressive maturity and commitment to personal development in his 1,600-metre in 2008: He set his sights not on winning that race but on achieving a personal-best time, and in the final he went out and ran the race of his life, taking more than 20 seconds off his preliminary time. In the two years leading up to the 2012 Special Olympics Canada

His first race in St. Albert, Alberta, was the 1,600metre event, and this time he earned another excellent personal best – as well as that elusive gold medal. Meade sprung into the lead in the opening seconds of that 1,600m race and never
looked back, running his heart out. After he crossed the finish line, he shook hands with his competitors, and then asked his coach, “How did I do? Did I get a personal-best time?” He had, and the gold to boot. That night, he slept with the hard-earned gold medal under his pillow. He went on to win a silver medal and two bronze med-
als in the 2012 National Games, giving him what he called “a trifecta” – one medal of each colour. When Meade got the call saying he had ear ned a berth on Team Canada for the 2013 Special Olympics World Winter Games, his response reflected his 13-year journey to that achievement. “I guess dreams do come true,” he told his
coach. Meade’s berth on the Team Canada training squad has truly been earned through his dedication, his positive and persistent attitude, and his remarkable commitment to his training and development. Caring, polite, enthusiastic, extremely dedicated and responsible, upbeat, positive, and persistent: those are the words that capture Meade’s personality. As an athlete with autism, Meade has overcome challenges in staying focused. He has built up his ability to focus for lengthy periods, and he has channelled his energy into his athletic abilities. He is the kind of athlete who trains independently in addition to his regular programs and adjusts his diet to complement his needs. In addition to his athletic accomplishments, Meade is known as a stellar representative for Special Olympics in his community. He is a busy athlete,

active in five-pin bowling, aquatics, athletics, floor hockey, and Club Fit in addition to his snowshoeing, and he is a willing speaker who has shared Special Olympics stories in everything from speeches at events and meetings to radio interviews. He also works four days a week as a prep cook for a local business, a job he has held for 13 years, and he delivers newspapers to keep himself in shape and earn travel money. He lear ned French before travelling to Quebec for the 2008 National Winter Games, and he’s working on Korean for his trip to the 2013 World Games. “There is not a fundraiser that we host that Hazen does not volunteer to assist,” his supporters wrote in nominating him for the award. “He truly and sincerely cares for his fellow athletes. Hazen exemplifies what a Special Olympics athlete is and should be.”

Health Care Assistants Needed in North Island — Train in just 38 weeks and get on the fast track to a new career Campbell River — According to a recent survey of employers in the North Island, there is desperate need for Health Care Assistants over the next 12-18 months. Much of the demand is due to increases in the senior population. Employers are struggling to fill vacancies. Since 1997, employment levels in B.C.’s healthcare sector have grown by 28% province wide, with even more growth on retirement hot spots, such as North Island communities.
Be in demand as a certified Health Care Assistant Discover College offers an accelerated 38 week program in their Campbell River, Courtenay, Parksville, and Nanaimo campuses. To meet the demand, Discovery has recently added seats to meet employer demand. 100% of our most recent graduating class found jobs upon completion. Wages typically range between $15-22/hr. Discovery offers small class sizes, with instructors who have worked in the industry. Funding may be also available.
