Shake The Lake provided entertainment for all ages Lake pier in previous years left a “bitter taste” with some people, said McIntyre. Specifically, he said, some residents didn’t like paying to access the beach, and didn’t like how the event was not suitable for families.

McIntyre wanted to create a festival with the music and sports competitions of Trauma Tour, but without the bikini contest and alcohol served.

He also wanted the event to be free, so that everyone, regardless of income, could attend.

“In order to do that, it takes an incredible team of volunteers who are willing to take a whole year to plan it,” said McIntyre. “That’s what Shake The Lake really comes down to, is volunteerism.”

It takes a huge amount of planning and time to put on the festival.

Coordinators help organize skateboarding and BMX competitions, music, security, and finance, among other areas.

With an open-air concert and BMX and skateboard competitions, the fifth annual Shake The Lake served up plenty of ear and eye candy to all who attended.

The festival, which took place last Friday, Saturday, and Sunday in the multiplex and area nearby, was free and open to all ages.

According to festival coordinator Sean McIntyre, Shake The Lake’s accessibility sets it apart from similar events.

“It’s free fun for everyone,” said McIntyre, citing the festival’s Family Zone, shopping, music, and sports competitions as examples. “We want to put on a party that everyone can come to.”

McIntyre came up with the idea for the festival with some friends in 2008. The Coors Light Trauma Tour which had taken place at the Sylvan

Toufic Hamdan (Selekta Feek), one-third of Red Deer-based hip hop group Nu-Contrast, performed Saturday at Shake The Lake.

Tyler Horness performed a variety of mid-air tricks on his BMX at the 1664 BMX Bonesaw Jam Saturday.

The competition, organized as part of the fifth annual Shake The Lake festival, featured young guns, amateur, and open competition levels. More than $5,000 in cash and prizes were available to be won.

Nu-Contrast DJ Brandon Heck (DJ Hek) mixed songs and provided the beats for his group to rap during their performance at Shake The Lake Saturday.

Construction pace double last year’s tally

The pace of construction of new homes and businesses in Sylvan Lake is more than double last year’s tally, according to building statistics for July which were released by the town earlier this month.

The year-to-date tally shows $39.5 million in construction value permitted, compared to almost $19.6 million in the first seven months of 2011.

July’s permit total of $4.6 million was down slightly from July of 2011 when $5.1 million in construction was permitted.

The largest permit last month was for an industrial building with second floor offices on Cuendet Industrial Way, valued at $1,113,750.

Asset Builders Corp. received a permit for a seven unit rowhouse on 44th Street which is Building 3 in the complex across from C. P. Blakely School. Value of the project was set at $996,240.

So far in 2012, permits have been issued for 88 multi-family units while in 2011 the first seven months saw just one permit for a seven unit complex.

There were also 11 permits issued for single family homes, nine of those in Ryders Ridge subdivision and two in Beacon Hill subdivision.

The total value of the 11 homes was just over $2.4 million and the construction value of the individual homes ranged from $182,160 to $248,630.

July’s total brought the year-to-date tally to 59 new homes started, compared to last year’s seven month tally of 70.

Others permits were issued for decks (4), detached garages (3), basement developments (2), and single permits for accessory building, hot tub, interior and exterior renovations and above ground pool.

Lightning damaged

- A poplar tree on the north boundary of Sylvan Lake Golf & Country Club was struck by lightning during a storm Aug. 4 and within days the damaged limbs were pruned so they didn’t damage homes just over the fence at Lakeshore Villas. David Wasiuta who lives in one of the units said the storm is “something we will never forget. I watched two huge lightning strikes about 60 yards apart in less than two minutes.” The first hit an electrical box that operates the golf course’s 18th hole fountain and the second the large poplar tree. “Both strikes and the booms were within the same second, sparks were flying and the whole condo complex shook and shook,” he said. On Monday, Ben Jones, owner of Bushwacker Tree Removal, and his crew of Cody Oakley and Barb Peacock were busy removing the damaged limbs piece by piece. Jones, high up in the tree, wielded the chain saw while a series of ropes and pulleys supported him and were used to lower the chunks of tree safely to the ground. The dangerous tree specialists took about half the huge poplar down and shaped it like an elm with a huge top canopy to see if the remainder can be saved. Wasiuta said they started about 8 a.m. and took about two and a half hours to get the rigging up before work began. They were finished about 7 p.m.

Changes to slips at marina approved by councillors

Sylvan Lake councillors approved plans for reorientation of the boat slips at the marina during their meeting Monday night after hearing concerns from an unhappy businessperson.

The reorientation will see docks running east to west with a travel lane on the west side of the marina, instead of the current north-south configuration for the docks. The change maintains the same number of boat slips (179) as proposed in earlier plans.

“The applicant has indicated the reorientation is required to streamline functionality and provide a safer design for boat traffic

areas,” according to a report provided to councillors by Tim Schmidt, director of planning and development.

He added in reviewing the application for council that the project includes installation of sheet piling along the north side of the marina, adjacent to land that will become a municipal reserve in the future, and changing the launching area.

Cynthia Giguere, of Sylvan Cruises, filed a written objection before council and spoke to her objection.

She indicated in her written submission the plan “is in direct contravention to the contracted lease to moor the Miss Mermaid at it’s current docking spot. This plan completely ignores this legal-

ly binding contract which does not expire until July 2014.”

The lease was one of the conditions of her purchase of the boat in 2004. A caveat is on the property’s land title listing the lease, she said.

Giguere said the 46 feet long boat needs turning space to be able to moor and the 40 foot channel proposed doesn’t provide the needed turning radius.

“There’s no way we can operate the vessel in that marina plan. If we can’t turn the boat around we can’t operate it. 40 feet is absolutely unworkable,” Giguere said.

Asked about the Zoo Cruise’s future, Giguere said she didn’t mention it because she doesn’t have a lease for its use of the marina. But she indicated both

would no longer be able to operate.

“I sympathize,” said Councillor Graham Parsons. But he added, “I don’t know what we can do about it. There has to be a solution to this problem going forward.”

He suggested, “maybe it’s time to open discussion of a day marina between the waterslide and pier.”

He’d noted there were plans for something in that area a number of years ago.

“This council values the business you are doing. I think our goal would be to look at other options,” Mayor Susan Samson told Giguere.

Asked for advice, Schmidt said the legal issue and the development issue are totally separate.

“The town doesn’t have the ability

to deal with a caveat that it is not party to.”

Giguere said, “I’m absolutely shocked that legal and moral obligations aren’t taken into account on every development.”

Councillors then voted unanimously to approve the development permit to allow work on the marina to proceed.

Councillors Ken MacVicar, Sean McIntyre and Dale Plante were absent from the meeting.

Work on the marina is scheduled to begin this fall and be completed by spring. This is the first step in a plan approved in May by council that will also see condominiums and commercial rental space built on a portion of the property.

He added that planning has already begun for next year’s festival. “The volunteers were absolutely incredible. I’m floored by the quality and calibre of the volunteers.”

To fit with the event’s family-oriented ideals, all the bands performing must agree not to swear. Hundreds of bands applied to perform this year, with 30 making the final cut.

McIntyre said talent and quality of the bands are the most important attributes organizers look for when choosing performers. Family friendly considerations and compatibility with the rest of the festival’s music are not far behind.

“We pick the bands that have a good attitude,” said McIntyre, adding that every band they’ve chosen has been great to work with.

Musical styles this year ranged from hard rock, to folk, to hip hop.

Musicians came from around the country, and one band (The Classic Crime) came from Seattle.

“We had a good variety of acts,” said McIntyre. “The bands that are applying have a

Athletes registered to compete in the skateboard and BMX competitions had an area to relax, where they received free drinks from Red Bull and vitaminwater. Competition winners received a cash prize.

While festival atten-

dance numbers have not been finalized, McIntyre estimates 8,000-9,000 people showed up over the three-day period.

Attendance was measured with wristbands distributed to everyone who came to the event.

Lance Dela Rosa came from Red Deer to attend Shake The Lake.

He said he enjoyed his first year. He belongs to a band, and hopes to perform at the event

next year.

Dela Rosa is friends with members of Half Chance Heroes, a Red Deer-based band that performed on Saturday.

He came to the festival to show support for them. He said he will likely return to Shake The Lake next year.

“It’s a great way to close the summer,” said McIntyre. “We hope everybody had a great time and enjoyed the festival.”

Jazz melodies will attract people to downtown farmers’ market

The rousing sounds of a Dixieland jazz band combined with a potpourri of outdoor shopping venues will make Sylvan Lake’s downtown core a happening place tomorrow (Friday).

Sylvan Lake’s Farmers’ Market will move downtown this week, said manager Crystal Loewen.

“We thought we would do something different. We did it in conjunction with the jazz festival and as a way to increase activity in the downtown core.

It is a great idea and will be lots of fun.”

Mayor Susan Samson said bringing the farmers’ market downtown is a great initiative.

The town and the chamber

have promoted other activities such as Midnight Madness and bringing the Stanley Cup to the downtown as ways to “create a buzz” and liven up the area, she said.

“The lake and the lakefront is the showpiece of Sylvan Lake and the downtown core sits right on the front step.”

She said the closure of Cobbs Foods has made it especially challenging to keep the downtown core “healthy and strong”.

Matt Cornell, Sylvan Lake’s economic development officer said the farmers’ market downtown will help create a more busy “look and feel” to the area.

“Bringing the Stanley Cup downtown certainly did that and Midnight Madness went over quite well as well,” he said.

Catherine Bais, executive director for the chamber of

commerce said manpower is needed to help Farmers’ Market vendors set up and to direct traffic. Anyone who wishes to volunteer may contact the chamber office at 403-8873048.

The farmers’ market will run from 4-7:30 p.m. and will feature a face painter and bouncy castle as well as 60 to 70 regular vendors.

50th Street will be closed from Lakeshore Drive south to the 50th Avenue (CIBC corner) and a portion of 50A Avenue will be closed from 50A Street (the post office corner) east to 50th Street (to accommodate fruit trucks), said Cornell.

The H.O.T. Dixieland Jazz Band will perform at the Farmers’ Market beginning at 5 p.m.

Robinson’s dream of Paris becomes reality Black Press

When Jeremy Robinson is on stage he can be anyone he wants to be and travel anywhere he wants to go.

But, until this summer, the young actor, who lives in Sylvan Lake, had not travelled abroad and a dream he had harboured about visiting Paris remained simply that; a dream.

However, this summer that dream became a reality and the 31-year-old actor spent two weeks living in the City of Lights.

It was an amazing experience.

While visiting Paris, Robinson read the book, ‘A Movable Feast’, a set of memoirs by literary great Ernest Hemingway. The memoir consists of Hemingway’s personal accounts, observations and stories of his experience in 1920s Paris.

In the book, Hemingway describes the city as a movable feast that will never leave the person who has been lucky enough to have been there.

Robinson, as he

walked down streets and laneways that, no doubt, Hemingway and other great writers and painters must have travelled, agreed.

“It was wonderful. I would go back in a second. Paris — it lives inside you.”

He recalled seeing the Mona Lisa painting housed at the Louvre behind bullet proof glass.

“I thought, wow, I’m actually in Paris looking at the Mona Lisa,” he said.

He especially enjoyed visiting the Shakespeare and Company bookstore, opened in 1951 by George Whitman.

The bookstore serves as both a regular bookstore and a reading library, specializing in English-language literature.

He said the Notre Dame Cathedral was the most beautiful building he had ever seen.

“It was the first thing I saw, and it was very cool,” he said.

being continually amazed by it all inspired Robinson to do some writing of his own.

“Sometimes I would be so inspired and I would just stop being a tourist and decide to sit and write. Right now I am working on a full length play; a family comedy/drama about a father and daughter. It is written from the daughter’s point of view.”

Now back home, Robinson has several pictures to remind him of his two weeks in Paris, but the best snapshots will, no doubt, remain imprinted in his mind forever.

“It truly is a movable feast just like Hemingway said,” he commented.

Robinson, who has lived in Sylvan Lake off and on for the last several years, graduated from Red Deer College with a degree in theatre arts and motion picture arts in 2008.

Since that time he has been a vital part of the theatre scene in Red Deer becoming a well known stage personality and well respected playwright.

He worked with Ignition Theatre acting and directing their Christmas show, It’s a Wonderful Life. He also

This spring he had the lead role in ‘The Psychic’, a Central Alberta Theatre production about a writer living in New York whose characters in the mystery novel he is

writing come to life on stage.

Presently, Robinson is a performer and playwright for Against the Wall, another theatre group based in Red Deer.

The group performs Bullskit Comedy, a sketch comedy show with a flavour similar

to Saturday Night Live.

Against the Wall will begin their sketch comedy shows at the Scott Block in Red Deer in September.

Against the Wall will also perform a murder mystery at La Casa Pergola Restaurant, Aug. 18.

A little knowledge is a good place to start I am fortunate with my job to learn about a huge variety of topics. I can’t think of any career that rivals journalism in its diversity. During my time here in Sylvan Lake and the surrounding areas, I have learned about agriculture, sports, canoes, trapping, and more. The information I’ve gained has certainly come in handy in more than a few conversations.

The most recent thing I learned about was cream. Before this weekend, all I knew was that cream is the delicious, more expensive part that is separated from whole milk.

I also knew it tasted sublime with fruit when whipped, sweetened, and flavoured with vanilla.

annual Cream Day, where the hamlet’s historic creamery hosts the event on their lawn to celebrate all things cream-related. There was ice cream, there was pie, and there was butter. There was also a cream separator, where people were encouraged to try separating the cream from the milk the old-fashioned way, by turning a crank.

Mounds of foamy bubbles had formed on the milk, which I was told were the result of recycling the milk and cream so people could

continuously try to separate it. I was invited to turn the crank, and I accepted.

I didn’t know what I had gotten myself into.

As it turned out, it’s hard work to turn the crank. A little bell rang when I wasn’t turning fast enough, which was most of the time. I kept turning it, faster and faster, until finally I was able to keep the bell from ringing. In my excitement I lost focus on turning the crank, and the bell resumed ringing. Finally, panting, I gave up.

Without a doubt, I have learned the most about agriculture, probably because I’ve writ-

ten so many articles about Eckville and other rural areas. I’m a city girl. I like nice clothes and nice shoes.

However, I have learned it’s a bad idea, a very bad idea, to wear flats to a beef show. I remembered my lesson next time and wore cowboy boots to the Benalto rodeo. I now also know the difference between a bull and a steer, and a cow and a heifer.

I’ve learned a lot about sports, as well. I have never been particularly athletic, preferring to read books when I was younger. If people still picked teams when I had gym class in school, I would surely have been one of the last picked.

When I was six, I played soccer. It seemed like the thing to do at the time. My mother

likes to tell the story of my first soccer lesson, when someone passed the ball to me and I shrieked, “Mom, it’s coming right at me!

What do I do?”

I’ve had to write a few sports articles now, so I’ve had to learn the proper rules and terms.

Sports terminology is its own language, and each sport is different.

People who read about sports care deeply about the subject, so it’s important to do it justice. While my knowledge is by no means complete, I feel significantly more con-

fident now when discussing sports with people.

So far, I’ve learned a little about a lot. While some might argue it’s better to learn a lot about a little, I think learning a little opens the door to learning a lot.

Rediscovering the delights of heading to the annual fair Most days I am a responsible adult doing my best to follow a strict regime of diet, exercise and not too much TV. But for one brief magical moment in time, that all changed. I turned into a kid again.

Why? I went to the fair.

Despite the fact the cute little girl at the ticket booth looked at me long and hard, no doubt trying to decide if I could be her grandma or not and charge me accordingly, I felt like a kid from the time my sparkly sandals hit the dirt of the midway.

The fair, with its potpourri of rides and screams and laughter and rows of games of chance, is a delightful assault to the senses.

For one thing there are the people. Lots and lots of people spilling out of the midway, filling the stands at the pony chucks, screaming in delirious excitement as they ride on a fiveminute crest of terror.

There are the food booths offering food at ridiculous prices that responsible adults such as myself with an ounce of selfdiscipline should avert her eyes from.

I didn’t, of course. I looked. I bought. I ate.

And then there are the booths offering prizes that dangled in front of poor unsuspecting fair goers such as myself like eye candy.

And, of course, there are the fortune tellers who could tell

you in 10 minutes and so many dollars where your life was headed and in 20 minutes tell you how to get there. And there was the cheap jewellery, so dazzling and beautiful, it had me digging in my purse to see if I had any change left over from the food booths I had already frequented.

“Stay away from that fair,” my brother warned me every year it came to town. “You’ll just be throwing away your money.”

I loved my brother. Always have. Always will. But, some-

times, I found it best to give him a hug, blow him a kiss and then simply ignore him.

“Want some cotton candy?” my sister asked, holding aloft her puff of pink delight.

I thought about salads and fish for supper. I thought about B vitamins and green tea and pumpkin flax and skim milk and checking labels for fat content.

And then hesitantly, in a lady-like delicate way, I carefully detached a tiny bit of the pink fluff with my fingers and let it dissolve in my mouth.

That was it. I was done.

As the candy dissolved, so did my thoughts. Before I knew it, I was cramming handfuls of the sticky, sweet stuff into my

mouth and then licking my sticky fingers like there was no tomorrow.

And that was not the end of it.

Before the night was over I had consumed copious quantities of fudge, almost a whole bag of those little melt-in-yourmouth donuts, a good portion of an elephant’s ear, a huge hamburger and an order of greasy fries. Of course, to appease my guilt, I washed it all down with a Diet Coke.

But as I waddled back to the truck, half a packet of those sugar donuts clutched in my sticky fingers, I was absolutely, positively happy.

From take-off at Montreal to landing in Britain the elapsed time was 12 hours and 36 minutes. The service accommodates all airgraph mail as well as letters to the armed forces. The return trip to Canada was made in 15 hours. ♦ ♦ ♦

At Monday’s council meeting Dr. T. S. Cookson was introduced by Councillor Carl Cox. Dr. Cookson is very much interested in starting a practise at Sylvan Lake. He has been relieving Dr. Gibson at Eckville for the past three weeks while Dr. Gibson has been on holidays.

Council explained their proposal for a plebiscite to be held in October for the purpose of securing ratepayers’ approval for a subsidy for a doctor of up to 2 mills.

Why are so many townspeople upset with politicians?

Dear Editor, Thank goodness many Sylvan Lake News readers take time to write letters to the editor expressing views on political events and trends around town. As British Parliamentarian Edmund Burke famously said, “All that is needed for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing.” Letters, then, are the sign of a healthy and vibrant community, if not of democracy itself.

Recently two letter writers chided others for criticizing Sylvan Lake Town Council and provincial politicians and civil servants (Criticize only after gathering all the facts; June 14 and Sylvan Lake observations - a positive viewpoint; July 7). Both writers have written similar letters before. Whether they are merely volunteer apologists, or paid lobbyists for council and provincial politicians and civil servants is unimportant. The question is why so

many townspeople are upset with Sylvan Lake’s town council and provincial, even federal politicians and civil servants?

There are reasons.

Town council has spent several years dismantling the beach and cottage industry beloved by generations of Albertans, to pursue dreams of an upscale four-story condominium-andcoffee shop resort catering to the affluent. Nothing wrong with a trendy resort, of course, except this is Sylvan Lake not Mexico or Hawaii with their year-round warm climates. Who will pay tourist rates for residential condos or patronize trendy coffee shops outside of the dozen or so warm lake weekends per year that attract tourists? Sensible Sylvan Lake residents see folly in such dreams.

The level of pigheadedness among provincial politicians and civil ser-

vants is practically off the chart.

Alberta Transportation’s (AT) right in - right out ‘solution’ at the Hwy. 11/781 intersection illustrates the point. Instead of investing $200$300,000 in traffic lights that would have drastically improved traffic safety, AT insisted on closing the intersection to north-south traffic and installed sightline impeding signs and cables on Hwy. 11.

That meant northbound Hwy. 781 traffic had to be shunted to the Hwy. 11/20 intersection with the missing eastbound left turn signal. The risk of collision there soared because of the increased traffic volumes and the fact there is room for only two eastbound vehicles at a time to turn left into the median, where they wait to dart through westbound traffic against a red light. All these Hwy11/781/20 solutions necessitated spending nearly

$5 million on building/upgrading Memorial Trail to handle disrupted traffic flows.

AT ignored massive public protests about the Hwy. 11/781 closure, turned a blind eye to ensuing social disruption and brushed off losses suffered by local businesses. The scorecard to date? ‘Fixed’ intersections at Hwy 11/781/20 intersections that are as dangerous as, or more dangerous than the old ones, a justifiably enraged public and millions of tax dollars down the toilet prematurely or unnecessarily!

If Alberta Environment wanted to solve the high lake level problem it could, easily. Clean out and maintain the outlet from Sylvan Lake as far southward as necessary for water to flow freely.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) recently declared (Clearing outlet creek to reduce lake level not an

option for this year, June 28) the lake outlet area can not be disturbed anytime soon because fish spawn there.

What? Where were Oceans and Fisheries when the entire outflow area was filled in for development and the outlet stream ditched along Hwy. 20?

The fish apparently survived that assault. Clean the outlet and the waterway!

If the two apologists who enjoy talking down to others considered the evidence they might concede that council, provincial politicians and civil servants are earning the criticism they are getting.

Walkathon planned to benefit Ugandan orphanage

In just a few short years the volunteers of T.O.U.C.H. Ministries and their supporters have done much for a village in Uganda, but the need is still there for more.

As a result, another

six kilometre walkathon is being planned, said organizer Sherry Wiebe.

The event takes place on Sept. 22 beginning at 9 a.m. from Sylvan Lake Alliance Community Church.

Because she’d like people of Sylvan Lake to see for themselves the differences made and the hearts that have been touched, she’s offering a first prize for the person with the most paid pledges. That person will receive $2,000 towards a trip to the project in Uganda.

“When there is so much poverty it takes time to rebuild and educate a community, but we have come so far in just two short years. What went from bare land, is now a home to 41 orphans, with a church/ nursery school and fields with blossoming crops.”

Sept 16th, 2010 marked the opening day of the T.O.U.C.H. orphan-

age where the neediest of children were chosen to make this there new home.

“When Rosemary was in our local schools, she shared the importance of early child education.

Through these presentations, Fox Run School, Sylvan Lake, and Notre Dame School, Red Deer, each sponsored to have a classroom built,” said Wiebe.

“I was in Africa in early 2011 and then again in the early part of 2012.

Demolition permits approved for two cabins

During their regular meeting Monday night, Sylvan Lake councillors: • approved demolition permits for two properties in the Waterfront Direct Control District.

A campaign to collect unneeded socks kicks off Monday by public health inspectors in Sylvan Lake and across the province.

Pamela Stewart, an inspector based in town, said the third annual sock challenge is being organized by the Alberta branch of the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors, a non-profit society and the only professional organization for public health inspectors across the country. The provincial branch represents dedicated environmental public health practitioners (public health inspectors) working in rural and urban communities to protect the health of all Albertans.

“Last year we were able to raise almost 17,000 pairs of socks for underprivileged and disadvantaged populations across the province,” Stewart said in a letter announcing the campaign.

The campaign runs from Aug. 20 to Sept.

21. A drop box has been set up at her office at Sylvan Lake Community Health Centre for people who would like to donate socks.

She’s also send a notice to community organizations and agencies asking for their support in collecting socks. Stewart may be reached at 403-8876788.

The first was for a cabin constructed in 1930 at 4103 50A Avenue. No new development is planned at this time.

The second was for a cabin which was partially destroyed by fire, at 5028 48 Street.

Meeting planned by MLA to discuss 781/11 lobbying efforts Dear Editor, Prior to the provincial election in April, the realignment of the Highways 781/11 intersection was the focus of much concern among the citizens of Sylvan Lake and area as well as tourists and others travelling that stretch of road.

During the election campaign, many citizens raised this concern with me and I promised to advocate for them and to lobby the government to save the intersection at Highways. 781/11.

I have not let up on this issue, and indeed, I have been lobbying the Minister of Trans-

portation, Ric McIver, on a daily basis. I have also had a personal meeting with Minister McIver and will be tabling a petition in the fall legislature.

I continue to hear of discontent with potential traffic flow problems and widespread safety concerns.

I have had several meetings with stakeholders, citizens and visitors to Sylvan Lake. My office is receiving an abundance of letters and phone calls regarding the need for access/opening of this intersection.

It has been made clear to me that the alternative solution of Memorial Trail

Markerville Cream Day continues tradition

While butter and ice cream are the most visible components of Markerville’s annual Cream Day, the main goal of the event is to bring together the community, said organizer Amber Longacre.

The lawn in front of Markerville’s historic creamery was filled with people last Sunday. A line stretched from a gazebo in the middle, where ice cream and pie

were for sale.

Demonstrators in tents occupied one side of the yard, showing old-fashioned cream separating, butter churning, and ice cream making.

The freshly churned butter, too soft to be pressed into a brick, was spread on salted crackers and sampled to visitors. The ice cream, made in a tub with coarse salt and ice, was also sampled in small cones. It was so soft it melted and ran down the side of the cone if not immediately eaten.

Britta and Thor Arnason helped make ice cream the old-fashioned way, in a manual churner with ice and salt at Markerville’s annual Cream Day Sunday.

New additions in recent years have included a popcorn machine at the concession stand and a bouncy castle.

Organizer Kolton Safron said some of the performers are also different each year.

Safron said Cream Day attendance was good this year. Longacre estimated the day’s turnout to be almost 1,000, higher than last year’s 600-700 visitors.

Karen Rusmell drove from Springbrook to attend the event, as she has done for eight years.

“We try and come

every year,” said Rusmell.

She likes the day’s atmosphere, as do her grandchildren.

“I enjoy sitting and listening to the music and they enjoy playing,” said Rusmell. She plans to return next year.

Longacre said Cream Day is promoted on nearby radio stations and newspapers, with flyers, and on facebook.

“I’m sure if you did no advertisements, we would still have a good turnout. Lots of people come here every year,” said Safron.

Markerville was founded by Icelandic settlers, who built the creamery to make a profit, said Longacre.

“That was the main supply of income for the whole town,” said Safron.

While the creamery is no longer functioning, it

still stands as a museum.

A small shop serves ice cream and Icelandic food.

“Icelanders had a sense of community,” said Longacre.

Longacre and Safron were unsure when the Cream Day celebration began, but date it to sometime in the 1990s.

Longacre said the event’s name came from farmers in the area picking up their cream cheques every Monday. The farmers dubbed this day “Cream Day”.

Longacre said the day is now organized with the help of volunteers and donations from nearby communities.

“We get so much help for the event,” she said.

The possibility of moving the current recreation vehicle dumping station is to be investigated by Sylvan Lake town staff.

Asselstine raised concerns about the current location at Sylvaire Close and Industrial Drive stating comments he’d heard from a local business owner who complained about interuption of access to

his business, garbage and waste material on his property and hazards because trailer owners waiting to dump their loads back up onto Highway 20.

“I think we’ve reach a point that the

usage of the site, because of its proximity to the highway, the hazards of that, that we should be looking at taking it out and moving it elsewhere,” Asselstine said.

Asselstine noted that when the dump-

ing station was initially located at the corner Highway 20 and the industrial park weren’t likely as busy as they are today. He suggested staff be asked to find another location where the site could be located.

McFadden planning assisted living facility in Sylvan

A longtime Sylvan Lake resident’s vision of providing shelter and care for people suffering with developmental disabilities or mental illness is moving closer to reality.

Robert McFadden, who works for Canadian Mental Health at the Buffalo Hotel (a housing development for homeless individuals with mental health and/or addictions in Red Deer), wants to open an assisted living facility in Sylvan Lake. He is hopeful the project will be operational by September.

“It is very much in the preliminary stages,” he said, “but I have full confidence this is going to fly.”

There is a need in Sylvan Lake for such a facility, McFadden said.

“Actually, the need is evident everywhere.

I don’t think Sylvan is different from any other place.”

McFadden, who owns Forrest Services, is working with Robert Van Rumpt from Red Deer to set up the housing facility.

“We are currently negotiating with PDD (Persons With Developmental Disabilities) to contract services to the community of Sylvan Lake,” he said.

McFadden plans to purchase a duplex near downtown and house three clients in each

unit. The premises are to be staffed 24 hours a day seven days a week.

McFadden said he finds working with people who are suffering from some form of mental illness, developmental disability or addiction, rewarding and challenging.

“I have worked at the Buffalo for five years and before that I worked with young offenders and was an employment counsellor. I enjoy working in this field. The residents (at the Buffalo) feel quite comfortable with me and I with them.”

He said the fact that he has kept his job at the Buffalo for five years has helped him retain a good rapport

with the people who live there.

“The fact that I have lasted so long shows that I care. They open up to me because they know that I will be there tomorrow.”

At Monday night’s council meeting, Va Rumpt told councillors they have purchased a duplex at 4910 47th Avenue “with the intention of starting a home with rehabilitative services for people with developmental disabilities”.

The intention is to have three residents in each of the two duplex units. The 24-7 operation will be for people in need of close supervision in regards to personal care, to cook,

clean and be part of society, he said.

These are high needs people who will always have attendants with them.

When RCMP arrived, the female advised that she had been pushed and choked after a verbal argument became heated. The suspect had fled the scene and was later arrested in Red Deer after a warrant was issued for his arrest.

2:57 p.m. - RCMP are currently investigating a collision involving a pedestrian on 47th Avenue at 51st Street in Sylvan Lake.

The female driver of a truck struck a 13-yearold girl who had just exited a parked vehicle.

The young girl sustained a fractured skull, bleeding on the brain, and broken bones in her right ear as well as cuts and bruises. She was transported to hospital in serious but non-life threatening condition. She is currently recovering in hospital. The investigation into the matter is continuing, however, alcohol is not considered a factor. It is believed fatigue contributed to the collision.

Serenity Pet Shelter to announce puppy names, still looking for adoption families

Winners of Serenity Pet Shelter and Rescue Society’s puppy naming contest will be announced this Friday

at the farmer’s market downtown, said president Melanie Crehan.

The winners, five boys and one girl, will receive a variety of prizes including gift cards to local businesses, a

DVD, and a t-shirt. The contest was open to children aged 5-12.

Though there are eight puppies in total, there are only six contest winners because the shelter had already

named two puppies, said Crehan.

Crehan said the shelter acquired the animals June 24 from a First Nations reserve.

Someone living on the reserve called the shel-

“She phoned and said, ‘Please can you come get these puppies, we don’t have enough money to feed them,’” said Crehan, adding that the puppies were

A well known mascot for Medicine River Wildlife Centre who has inspired interest from school children and others throughout Central Alberta can now claim fame of another kind.

He’s written a book.

Announcement of the one-of-a-kind book “Otis’s Story” was made last Friday. It’s the first of a series entitled “Through the Eyes of Otis the Owl”. Each 36 page book narrated by the centre’s well-known education owl, Otis, tells the story from the Wildlife Centre, along with an educational component.

“This is a very unique

and exciting series that is sure to inspire its young readers,” said a press release from Carol Kelly, executive director of the facility.

“In the first book, Otis the Owl takes us through his story of how he came to be at Medicine River Wildlife Centre.

It’s a thrilling tale, filled with suspense and intrigue! A beautiful, high quality book with incredible illustrations

by Alberta artist Gabe Wong.

“Otis is grateful for the care and kindness he receives from the Wildlife Centre and plans to donate all the proceeds of the book to help the organization pay for and protect the 453 acres surrounding his home.”

“The puppies were pretty good, but the mother was skin and bone. You could count her ribs. Every bone stuck out. They just didn’t have enough money to feed her,” said Crehan.

The shelter took the puppies to a veterinarian, who pronounced them in good shape, she said. However, the mother needed to eat.

The animals were taken to a farm 25 minutes north of Sylvan Lake.

There, Crehan said the mother received all the food, supplements, and vitamins she needed.

The puppies were regularly handled to socialize them. They are now being leash trained.

“They’re pretty good.

You have to be a cheerleader and coax them and praise them and give them a treat,” said Crehan.

She said the mother has improved and gained some weight, which will continue now that the puppies have been weaned.

“She is the sweetest, most affectionate dog ever. I can never understand how they can be so nice when they’ve been through so much,” said Crehan.

The mother and puppies will need to be adopted. All are mixedbreed, medium-sized dogs, with the puppies having two different fathers.

“We’re looking for forever homes for them now,” said Crehan. She said the ideal home would be with an active family that is willing to take time and effort to train and walk the dogs as needed.

“They’ll be fine on acreages as long as they’re not left outside alone.”

Local volleyball player finishes eighth with teammates at Pan Am Cup

Sylvan Lake volleyball player Jaimie Thibeault placed eighth overall with her teammates at the Pan Am Cup in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, according to a press release on the Volleyball Canada website.

The Canadian Women’s National A Team lost a rankingdeciding match against Team Peru on July 20, with Peru winning all three games with scores

of 25-19, 30-28, and 25-21.

The Canadian team had a total of three wins and five losses in the tournament. The Pan Am Cup was a qualifier for the 2013 FIVB World Grand Prix, an international women’s volleyball tournament.

Due to their placing, the Canadian team did not qualify.

Children and teddy bears picnic together at Dickson Store Museum

Teddy bears? Definite check. Dickson Store Museum hosted its 12th annual Teddy Bear Picnic last Thursday. Children brought their favourite stuffed animal to the event, where they participated in games, singing, and a picnic on the lawn, all with their toy companion at their side.

Museum manager Sharon Lightbown originally came up with the idea. When she first began her job, she was asked to organize some children’s summer events. The picnic was one of them.

She’s not sure where the idea came from, but said she used to dance as a child. One of the songs she danced to was Teddy Bear’s Picnic, and she wonders if the song was in the back of her mind when she was planning the events.

“It just came to me. I don’t think I ever read anything about it,” said Lightbown.

She describes the picnic as a family event, geared to children up to eight years old. The children play games, make crafts, sing songs, and go on a “bear hunt”. A sucker with a cut-out paper bear around it is a prize at the end of the bear hunt. Past years have featured a puppet show and a live play, said Lightbown.

“We just do different things every year, but a lot of it is the same and people like that and they keep coming back,” said Lightbown.

Families register in advance for the event.

Lightbown said registration is necessary because the picnic gets bigger every year, and the museum needs to be aware of available food and supervision for the children. She estimated about 50 people were registered for this year’s picnic.

The picnic’s food is provided by local businesses, who sponsor the event. The menu included sandwiches, watermelon, homemade lemonade, gummy

bears, and an ice cream cake for dessert.

Shaylyn Kettle, 9, attended the picnic. It was her first year at the event, which she said was fun because of its many activities.

“It’s awesome so far,” said Shaylyn, adding that she would like to return next year.

Shaylyn got her teddy, Dayce, a husky dog wearing a pink dress, from the Build-A-Bear Workshop in West Edmonton Mall about a year ago.

- It didn’t take long for heavy equipment to move onto the site of the new Crestview subdivision, south of Pierview. Work was underway last Friday. The subdivision application for the first 60 lot phase of the development was approved by Municipal Planning Commission members at their meeting July 16.
