Welcome to the 2012-2013 school year! What’s inside the guide

A Message from Superintendent Cam Pinkerton As the staff and Trustees in SD70 prepare to begin a new school year I would like to extend a warm ‹Welcome› to all our students and families and hope that everyone had a relaxing and enjoyable summer with friends and loved ones.  For our students returning to school, it is a time filled with anticipation and excitement as they prepare to reacquaint themselves with friends, to develop new relationships, and to enter the next grade level at their school.  For students new to SD70, or entering school for the first time, the day after Labour Day is a veryspecial time indeed. I am very proud of the many initiatives and programs that SD70 has implemented and will continue with this year. These range from students entering our system through our Strong Start Centres and Full Day Kindergarten to our many programs to help our students determine their best career and educational paths as they exit our system. All these programs help our students graduate with dignity, pride, passion and a plan. This is our core purpose as a caring and compassionate school district and it is reflected through the unwavering efforts of our excellent staff who work with our students and families every day of the year. To all of our parents, students, staff and community members, ‘Welcome Back!’  We all have an important role to play in the success of our students and I look forward to working closely with you throughout the 2012-13 School Year to ensure that this is an exciting, fulfilling, and rewarding year for all or our students.

Now Forming! Starting in September and running through April 2013, we have 5 Pin Leagues for all ages and abilities. Beginners are always welcome ~ no experience necessary! Join as an individual, with family or friends or form your own team.

Here’s a few tips to make school lunches more appealing: * Purchase a new lunch container. Few kids want to dig into a brown paper sack and pull out something that has been so squashed it’s unrecognizable.

* Get creative. Children may not be inclined to eat loose pieces of fruit. But if the fruit is stuck on skewers or served with a low-fat dipping sauce or caramel, it may look more appealing. Look to “mini” foods, which tend to be more fun. * Hide healthy foods within others. There are entire recipe books that mix fruits and vegetables into items like cake, cookies and brownies.

* Cut foods into fun shapes. Kids may be more inclined to eat a turkey and cheese sandwich if it’s cut into star shapes or their favorite cartoon characters. Invest in a few cookie cutters to make food more fun. * Don’t let the time of day dictate what you serve. As long as kids are eating healthy items, it doesn’t matter when they eat them.

KEEP THEM ACTIVE!

Port Alberni

Parents make a difference in the classroom Research indicates that children whose parents get involved with their education are more likely to earn better grades and less likely to have behavior problems in the classroom. There are many different reasons for parents to get involved with their child’s school and the community. Helping their children succeed is just one of them. Here are a few ideas.

FALL 2012 REGISTRATION DATES: • Tuesday September 4th @ 1-6:30 pm • Wednesday September 5th @9am-2:00pm • Thursday September 7th @ 1-6:30 pm Classes Start Week of September 17th 3450 Argyle Street Phone: 250-724-1011

Work with the teacher Teachers are increasingly facing obstacles with regards to time and funding. Many must preside over large classes and are responsible for outfitting their classrooms with certain supplies. This presents ideal opportunities for parents to step up and pitch in. Volunteering in your child’s classroom is a good way for you to help his or her teacher and get a firsthand account of what your child is doing in class. If you keep an open dialogue with the teacher through phone calls or e-mail, you may be presented with plenty of opportunities to get involved. Attend meetings Parent advisory councils are often instrumental in helping Continued on page 11

fundraisers and special activities outside of the classroom. The PAC is also privy to information on upcoming events before the rest of the school community. Attending monthly meetings can keep you up to speed on the goings-on at your child’s school. It will also ensure your voice is heard with regards to school policy. Showing your face at meetings will also give you the opportunity to meet other parents. Attend special events Not every parent can serve on the PAC or be present in the daily activities of the classroom. However, you can show your support by attending special events hosted by the school -such as fundraisers or field-day activities.

Volunteer your skills Some schools can benefit from the specialized skills of parents. Ask if you can come in and talk about your job or hobby and demonstrate it to the class. Being involved in your child’s school sets a positive example for your kids and provides their school with some much-needed assistance. Ask your child’s teacher how you can help at school this year.

For many youngsters, school marks the first time they are away from their parents for an extended period of time. As a result, safety concerns -- especially concerning transportation to and from school -- is foremost on the minds of many parents. School bus safety is something that should be presented to children in terms they can understand. It is a good idea to reinforce lessons at home in preparation for the first day of school. Here are some important topics to go over. * Walk to the bus using a sidewalk if there is one. If no sidewalk is present, walk on the opposite side of the street facing oncoming traffic. * Wait for the bus at the designated stop. Don’t wander away. * Do not go into the street while waiting for the bus to arrive. * Do not roughhouse or run around with friends while waiting for the bus to arrive. * Wait for the bus a safe distance away from the street until the bus stops and opens the door. * Walk one-by-one onto the bus. Do not push or crowd the doorway. * Once on the bus, quickly find a seat and sit down. * If there is a seatbelt, fasten it. (Children should be familiar with how to latch a seatbelt.) * Do not put your head, arms or anything else out of the bus window. * Keep the bus aisle clear of backpacks or other items. * Keep voices down so not to distract the driver. * Listen to the driver. * Do not throw things on the bus. * Unbuckle your seatbelt only when the bus has stopped at the school (or your stop at home)and the door is open. * Exit the bus slowly and do not push. * If you must cross the street when exiting the bus, do so in front of the bus so the driver can see you. Parents can go over these rules again and again. On the first day of school, some parents prefer to let their children ride the bus to school and then the parents meet the children at the school to watch the boys and girls exit. This also reassures the children that they are safe riding the bus. The first day of school may be full of new things, but children can acquaint themselves with school bus safety and grow accustomed to riding one each day
