Salmo RCMP, along with West Kootenay Traffic Services Integrated Road Safety Unit (IRSU), have released their report for the recent Shambhala Festival, which took place Aug. 6-14 on a 200+ acre private property site near Salmo.

“The Shambhala Event Security group again this year has played an important role in dealing with attendees,” said staff sergeant Dan Seibel of the Kootenay Boundary Regional Detachment of the RCMP. “This includes traffic control from Highway 3 into the site, inspecting vehicles entering the festival and resolving problems throughout the weekend.

As in past years, the Security staff continue to be extremely helpful and professional throughout the event.”

The Village of Salmo population is approximately 1,200 people and the Salmo RCMP has a regular staff of four officers.

As with any significant special event, there’s a large number of out of town citizens arriving in Salmo to attend this festival.

Attendance at Shambhala is limited to 10,000 people and there were over 1,000 volunteers, staff, entertainers and employees associated to the various music bands and commercial vendors and booths at the site. Most attendees travel to the festival via motor vehicle resulting in a considerable increase in traffic for area residents.

“In an effort to keep area roadways safe, Police maintain a strong presence on the highways prior to, during and immediately following Shambhala,” said Seibel. “Numerous Traffic Road Checks, as

well as enforcement and patrols, were conducted within the Village of Salmo, as well as the surrounding roadways within the Kootenay Boundary Regional Detachment area, such as Highway 3, Highway 3A and Highway 6.”

Shambhala 2012 was also marred by the first death in the 15 year history of the event.

On Sunday, Aug. 19, 23 year-old Mitchell Fleischacker of Sidney, BC, died of an apparent overdose at the festival.

For the first time in the history of the Silver City one of its own will be representing the province in the B.C Ambassador program.

Carley Henniger, the Trail Princess from 2009, was dubbed royalty at the 2012 version of the show at the Merritt Civic Centre on Saturday.

After a week-long competition the B.C. Ambassador program (BCAP) crowned three girls to represent the province, including Castlegar’s Mariah Morris and Kamloops’ Acacia Schmietenknop along with Henniger.

“It was really stressful,” the 20-year-old Henniger said in Gyro Park on Monday.

“All of the girls were really talented, and I was so surprised that I won.”

But the win didn’t come easily. Henniger said the week was one of the hardest in her life, and it began on Aug. 17 with a speaking competition and talent showcase.

jor exports and sports teams, national parks as well as the geography of the province.

On Aug. 18, all 14 candidates participated in personal interviews with the judges, modeled their gowns and participated in an impromptu questionnaire.

“I was really worried for the threehour knowledge test because I don’t usually test well,” said Henniger. “But my grade was actually in the top

five.”

In fact, Henniger placed in the top five for every category except for the talent show.

“But that’s okay,” she said, while praising her competitors. “All of the girls worked so hard and I’m so glad I got to know all of them.”

The aim of the BCAP is to nurture provincial leaders of the future, promote and assist with the expenses of post-

secondary education and to forge links of understanding and friendship throughout B.C. communities.

Henniger is halfway through a double-major degree in political science and international studies at University of Northern B.C. (UNBC), which tied perfectly into the mandate of the program.

Her efforts have not been ignored: Henniger will receive a scholarship at the end

of the year.

“That’s why I want my reign and my title to represent all of the candidates and the past ambassadors. I want it to represent their commitment and all of their hard work as well. They’re my motivation for this year.”

Henniger plans to return to the UNBC this fall, continue volunteer work in both Greater Trail and Prince George and she plans to attend more than 20 pageants to raise awareness about the BCAP over the next year, starting on Friday.

“Prince George doesn’t have a program yet,” she said.

“So I’d like to raise awareness about it up north and I’m going to help coach some of the girls in Trail while I’m back.”

Henniger was pleased about the support she received from the community and expected to see the program flourish in the area.

The BCAP is an annual event open to anyone between the ages of 17 and 23 who have previously held an ambassador title within the province.

The weekend of events started to mark the 75 year anniversary of the incorporation of the City of Rossland.

The first Golden City Days was held back in 1972.

The Golden City Days Weekend is from September 7-9 and includes many activities.

The events are family-oriented and meant to celebrate Rossland’s rich heritage.

They are looking to make this year’s event just as entertaining as last year’s weekend.

Some of the main events include the Sour Dough Alley Stage entertainment, the Fall Fair and the children’s games and activities.

There is a pancake breakfast, inflatable fun park and sporting events.

Various acts are

scheduled for the Friday, Sept. 7 “Evening of Entertainment Extravaganza,” as well as for the Saturday Sour Dough Alley Stage entertainment.

The show is expected to include many talented local singers, dancers, musicians, and a comedian will be announced at a later date.

On top of that there will also be Roller Derby, the Hucken Berries Bike Jam and the Golden City Days Parade around Jubilee Park, along Second Avenue and past the arena.

After attending the Kidney Walk for the last two years, Karen Fontaine will be able to participate in the walking portion for the first time.

Over the course of the last two years that Fontaine participated, she was recovering from health problems ranging from kidney and pancreas failure to Riddle Diabetes to creating a Fistula and even Ielets. As a result, she could only fundraise money for the cause.

On Sunday, August 26, the Trail Kidney Walk will take place in Gyro Park between 8 a.m. and 12 p.m.

The scope of problems that she suffered drained her so much that she doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t actually remember a lot of the last ten years. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I spent more time in the hospital than at home,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;But the pancreas transplant changed my life.â&#x20AC;?

Fontaine received a call less than one year after her kidneys failed indicating that she could come into the hospital for the pancreas, but that the staff didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know if the organ donorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s kidneys could be used. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When I woke up, I was told that I got both,â&#x20AC;? she said excitedly. â&#x20AC;&#x153;But I never had kidney disease very long. Some people have it for several years before they get a transplant.â&#x20AC;?

Tomatoes are low

in sugar and calories and are a good source of vitamin C, potassium and fibre.

They are also a great source of the antioxidant called lycopene, which is thought to help prevent prostate cancer.

Lycopene is more readily absorbed from cooked tomatoes so cooking and canning salsa is a good way to preserve tomatoes for the winter months.

The one nutrition downfall to salsa is that it can be high in sodium, but if youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re making your own you can control the amount of salt you use.

Here is a fresh salsa recipe that makes a great appetizer or can be served on fish or chicken.

Fresh roma tomatos make the difference.

2 cups fresh roma tomatoes, diced 1 red pepper, roasted and diced 1 cup black beans (optional) 1/2 cup red onion, diced 1/3 cup cilantro, chopped 2 limes, juiced ½-1 jalapeùo, seeds removed (use jalapenos as per your heat preference) 1 tsp cumin Salt to taste Roast the red pep-

per by placing under the broiler. Allow the skin to blacken and crack, using tongs to turn frequently. You want to blacken the skin but not burn the flesh.

When the pepper is black on all sides remove from the oven and place in a paper bag or a bowl and cover with plastic wrap.

Allow the pepper to sit for at least five minutes before peeling off the blackened skin and removing the core and seeds.

Chop the cooled pepper and the rest of the ingredients and combine with cumin and salt to your taste.

Encouraging signs along the road to gender equality SUBMITTED

Statement by FCM President Karen Leibovici on closing the gap in women’s representation in municipal politics.

Ottawa – The following statement was released Monday by FCM President Karen Leibovici on the recent successes and continued efforts to recruit more women to municipal councils: “FCM’s efforts to bridge the gender gap in municipal governments are achieving real results, one election at a time.

British Columbia and New Brunswick recently reached the United Nations’ goal of 30 per cent as the minimal percentage of elected women required for government to reflect women’s concerns.

They join the

Northwest Territories, Yukon and Nunavut who reached this milestone on their way to parity.

While women make up over 52 per cent of the Canadian population, only 25 per cent of the country’s elected municipal representatives are female. Canada ranks 42nd out of 189 countries for the number of women in politics.

To close the gap between the reality in Canada and the UN target, 100 more women need to be elected each year from now until 2026.

We have seen the next generation of women in politics.

They are there and they are getting ready to run. It is our goal to provide them with the tools and long-term support they need to win.

This year promises to be even more exciting as municipal elections are held in no fewer than six provinces and territories: Yukon, Saskatchewan, Nova Scotia, Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Prince Edward Island.

Canada ranks 42nd out of 189 countries in terms of the number of women in politics With support from Status of Women Canada, FCM has implemented a number of initiatives to recruit and train women to run in municipal elections.

A series of campaign workshops and campaign webinars, supported by a campaign manual, have been held across Canada with encouraging results: almost 40 per cent of the workshop participants have been elected.

In British Columbia, where FCM offered five workshops, women now make up a historic 32 per cent of municipal councils.

In New Brunswick, 44 per cent of women who participated in the New Brunswick workshops ran for municipal election, and of those, 74 per cent won.

With this recent achievement, women now make up 30 per cent of municipal councils in the province. Later this year, a workshop will be held in Weyburn, Sask., and another in Iqaluit.

Our Protégée pilot program also connects young women interested in gaining the experience they need to run for municipal office with excellent mentors, such as Helen Hughes, this year’s recipient of FCM’s Ann MacLean Award for Outstanding Service by a Woman in Municipal Politics.

The importance of engaging younger women in local issues cannot be underestimated. FCM´s Canadian Women in Municipal Government Scholarship program supports secondary school students who are taking their first steps on their school’s leadership team or student council.

New survey says breakfast a priority, skipped by majority While teary bedtimes or family dinners can make afternoons and evenings taxing for parents, it’s mornings that Canadian parents have declared the hardest.

Six out of 10 Canadian moms and dads say morning is the most stressful period of the day, according to the results of a new poll conducted by Ipsos Reid on behalf of Breakfast Cereals Canada.

Morning time “thrival” “As a mom and a dietitian, I know how crazy and chaotic the morning can be,” says Andrea Holwegner, a registered dietitian and mother of one.

Grand Forks’ major event ahead CASSANDRA CHIN West Kootenay Advertiser

Grand Forks will host the 32nd annual Grand Forks International (GFI) baseball tournament from August 29 to September 3 at James Donaldson Park.

The GFI has seen teams come into Grand Forks from across Canada, the United States, Australia and even Japan.

This year’s tournament will have 26 games over six days.

Tournament coordinator Gerry Foster noted that more than 300 volunteers work together to help put this event on.

“From registering teams to promoting the event, to providing tickets or food, it’s a community effort,” he said.

The 12 visiting teams include the Lewiston Paffile Truckers, Seattle Studs, Trail

Orioles, Langley Sr. Blaze, Canada West All-Stars, San Diego Stars, Parkland Whitesox, the UCLA Bruins alumni, Northwest Honkers, Kamloops Sun Devils, Team Canada and the Thurston County Senators.

“Some teams are returning while others are new to the roster,” said Foster.

“But we’re all excited about the games to come.”

Returning teams include the Truckers (defending champs), the Studs, Team Canada and the Senators, while new teams include, the Honkers, Canada West AllStars, U.S. Military All-Stars, UCLA alumni.

Whereabouts of Owen Rooney remain unkown Grand Forks Briefs Tuesday, Aug. 14 saw the two-year anniversary of Australian Owen Kiernan Rooney’s disappearance. He was last seen at Grand Forks’ Boundary Hospital in 2010 and while there have been a number of reported sightings, none have born fruit.

According to Staff Sgt. Dan Seibel of the Kootenay Boundary Regional RCMP, the investigation is still open and there were some sightings in late spring.

Near the Yukon border, 20 firefighters worked on the west and south flanks of a 3,500-hectare fire north of Dease Lake.

In addition to the two large fires, the Northwest Fire Centre had seven new fire starts Sunday, sparked by lightning strikes, and reports of 12 abandoned campfires over the weekend.

With hot weather through most of August producing high fire risk, campfires were banned last week in the Kamloops region.

B.C. forest fire crews are enlisting help from neighbouring provinces to battle a lateseason surge of fires.

Most of the major fires are in the sparsely populated northeast corner of B.C., restricting the booming natural gas industry in the region. Yukon sent 79 of its firefighters to B.C. on the weekend, joining 20 from Saskatchewan and and 35 from Ontario.

Another emerging hotspot is northwestern B.C., where communities were warned Monday of visible smoke along Highway 16. A fire near Morice Lake was estimated at

The fire danger rating is high across most of the province with pockets of extremely dry conditions across the north, the western Interior and the Okanagan-Similkameen regions.

Welcome to our new regular feature introducing the artists behind the sculptures in this year’s Castlegar SculptureWalk.

‘Seedling III’ (painted steel) A tenured associate professor at Northwest Missouri State University for the past seven years, Glenn Williams specializes in teaching various classes relating to the sculpting process but is adept in others – Art Appreciation, 3-D Design and Sculpture as Public Art are other courses he has instructed. He is also an accomplished sculptor in his own right, with works on display in various locations across the midwestern United States.

Williams’ sculptures tend towards abstraction, as evidenced by his entry in this year’s Sculpturewalk, ‘Seedling III’. Dramatically dark and elevated, a stylized seedling with juxtaposed projections - rising in graceful flourishes - is offset by counterpoints such as the angled circle below the centre of the work.

“My intent always is to invite the viewer, as an observant participant, into a visual dialogue about perception,” says Williams. “With this and other works I aim to create a dialogue between forms and shapes – natural versus artificial, dynamic versus static – and capture the interaction or formal relationship.”

‘Seedling III’ is part of an ongoing series that includes a similarly styled installation in Columbia, Missouri. That piece graces the front of a local fire hall and was erected in May 2010. The city’s Percent for Art program chair praised Williams involvement with the immediate community, his technical prowess and the depth of meaning he conveys in the sculpture.

It holds true for his entry here; what at first glance is deceptively simple takes on greater import and depth of meaning the longer it is appreciated from every angle.

“In my work I explore various elements of the human condition, particularly those aspects that impact our sense of identity and self awareness,” Williams notes.

“I draw inspiration from personal experience and a variety of political, social, historical and literary influences to do so.”

by a startling black intrusion: a set of wheels dangles from the roof of one, a ladder pierces another. It is currently exhibited at Franconia Sculpture Park, a public community undertaking located northeast of Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota.

Always contemporary, Williams’ sculpture is both dramatic and subtle at once. ‘Seedling III’ will please the eye of the viewer while their brain contemplates the intent and decodes their personal interpretation of this engaging, thoughtful work of art.
