Rescued grizzly bear has happy home here Aldergrove Star

A grizzly bear found abandoned at a Cariboo landfill in 1999 continues to thrive at the Greater Vancouver Zoo in Aldergrove.

The zoo received Shadow in the winter of 1999 after she was rescued by conservation officers.

At the time, she was roughly a year old and had been left by her mother and siblings to fend for herself at a landfill, where she had been surviving on garbage for about two weeks.

Marketing and communications manager Jody Henderson says Shadow is the zoo’s only grizzly bear and has always been a real draw.

Alternatively she would have been euthanized because of her habituation to the landfill. Instead she was brought to the zoo for education purposes.

Henderson guesses Shadow was probably the runt of the litter, which was probably why she was abandoned.

Today she weighs around 270 pounds.

Henderson says her habitat consists of a 1.5acre enclosure, with various berry bushes, lots of trees, a pond and several dens. It’s the size of football field and as natural as possible for a captive environment.

In addition to the berries, she also eats salmon once in a while, fruits and vegetables.

“She’s a bit of a diva,” Henderson says.

“She likes to get up later in the morning. She’s super intelligent and plays non-stop. She’s a real ham in front of the camera so there have been lots of videos and pictures taken of her over the years.”

Henderson says Shadow will pick things up and balance them on her head or nose, or throw things up in the air.

“I’ve seen her several times doing somersaults down the hill. She has a super big personality.

She’s not keen on construction around her and any kind of machinery agitates her.”

Every time zoo staff does work around her Shadow becomes frustrated.

“Several years ago we went into her enclosure to clean it out; we do that every so often to cut some trees and move things around. She was in her holding pen while we were doing this and immediately when we were finished and she was back on her own, I remember her putting everything back to where it was before. She has a place for everything. She’s very fun that way and very particular.”

Henderson describes Shadow’s personality as big and says it’s apparent she knows her keepers and employees at the zoo. “She very much reacts to our calling or being around her.”

Trash dumpers plague downtown area

Illegal dumping of rubbish continues to be a problem in Aldergrove and Langley Township.

Often the rubbish consists of large furniture and mattresses, which are discarded on roadsides or private property. Such was the case Monday morning when the staff of the Aldergrove Thrift Store found couches and chairs deposited on their back parking lot.

“These are not donations that we can sell, they are garbage that costs us money to get removed and dumped,” complained Len Gammon, manager of the store. “This results in less money that we have to distribute to the causes in our community.”

This furniture was dumped, likely in the dark, the night before. The storefront faces busy, well-lit Fraser Highway but the parking lot in the back is on an alleyway.

It’s far from the first time that someone has done this to the thrift store and other businesses and residents here though.

People are routinely dumping their garbage behind Aldergrove businesses and on Township road right of ways. Bob Newman of the Aldergrove Thrift Store says this load of useless furniture will cost the store money to dispose of.

Locals are asked to keep an eye out for this sort of dumping and to jot down licence plate numbers if they

see someone doing this, and either report it to RCMP or Township bylaw enforcement.

Gammon said the thrift store is moving as soon as next month to a new larger location a block further west

on Old Yale Crescent, where they also have the benefit of a locked gate to keep dumpers out.

Blueberry cannon ban on council’s agenda Black Press

A winter, spring and early summer that brought higher than average rainfall triggered many landslides in B.C. Some proved deadly.

Noting that extreme weather conditions resulted in fatal mudslides, and that development in the Township has stripped many hillsides of trees, Councillor Kim Richter wants the municipality to assess the risk for mudslides which have the potential to harm people and damage property.

Strategies needed to identify areas that are at risk and measures needed to mitigate them lie at the core of a notice of motion Richter presented at the final public meeting before council’s summer break.

Richter presented several other

notices of motion that call on council to consider: * Traffic calming to protect pedestrians and cyclists on Billy Brown Road in the Bedford Landing community in Fort Langley; * A household goods recycle/ exchange depot at the Aldergrove Waste Transfer Station; * Banning overnight parking of large commercial vehicles on 200 Street where they disturb residents; * Locating licensed medical marijuana grow-ops in secured, indoor stand-alone facilities on industrial or agricultural land and removing them from residential zones where they put residents at risk and expose them to prolonged odours; * Sustainability bylaws that would ensure new developments incorpo-

rate LEED certification, green roofs, living walls, permeable pavement, and plug-in recharging stations for electric cars; * Remediation of the Gray Pit area in Glen Valley, as well as an inventory of endangered species; * Strategies to halt the unauthorized use of converting accessory buildings such as garages to residential units, to reduce the stress on municipal resources including aquifers, recycling, garbage pickup, fire and policing services, as well as local schools; and * Banning propane cannons, which are disruptive to area residents and animals, on the grounds that they are an excessive, intrusive, and inhumane way to control a pest problem.

In another notice, proposed by

Councillor Steve Ferguson, council will be asked to formally support the retention of Langley as a single federal riding.

The Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission has proposed splitting Langley to accommodate B.C.’s population growth. Much of that growth is in the Lower Mainland and an additional seat has been recommended for Surrey. This new riding would be called Langley-Cloverdale and encompass the whole of Langley City and part of the Township lying south of 56 Avenue and west of 216 Street which incorporates parts of Murrayville, Brookswood and Fernridge. The bulk of the Township would be renamed Fort LangleyAldergrove, and stretch to Mount Lehman Road in Abbotsford.

“This past week we opened up another area we revamped near her enclosure in the North American section. There used to be a bus that would go through a series of gates in that section and she was in the front, but we’ve eliminated the buses because we want it to be better for the animals and the environment.”

Now there’s more of a walkthrough area where observers can access the view of half of Shadow’s enclosure, as opposed to only a quarter, which was what the access was before the changes.

“She is getting lots of enrichment now from the one long side where people can walk along. The kids are pretty excited to see her from there when she’s on that side and she’s been enjoying all the attention.”

Shadow is quiet but very busy.

It’s not cold enough in the Lower Mainland for more than what Henderson calls semi-hibernation, when Shadow becomes less active and eats less during a period of time.

“She dug a pretty serious den last year. She had one already, but she dug another one and spent hours working on it.”

In the wild, grizzly bears live around 25 years, with the longest recorded wild grizzly living 34 years.

In captivity, the longest recorded grizzly lived to 47 years of age.

At the rate Shadow is going it’s anticipated she’ll live to 25 to 35 years of age in her captive environment.

“She was brought here to live out her life. She has great people taking care of her, a wonderful vet, and all that good stuff. She has good meals and doesn’t have to do much.”

Henderson notes over the years the zoo has taken in a number of animals.

“Conservation organizations and offices will call us when they’ve found an animal to see if a zoo can take them and save them,” she says.

The North American section also features black bears, coyotes, cougars, bison, Roosevelt Elk, reindeer, and three injured bald eagles.

Jarvis Ambaka Scholarship recipient committed to pay-it-forward Jarvis Ambaka grew up playing soccer in Kisumu, a Kenyan city on the eastern shore of Lake Victoria.

Although he was eventually selected to join Kenya’s National Soccer League, that opportunity fell through when he refused to bribe a coach to let him play.

Now a member of Trinity Western University Spartans Men’s Soccer team, the third-year human kinetics major is adjusting to the North American game — in particular, its colder and less pleasant playing conditions.

But Jarvis is not studying at TWU simply to play soccer. Although he initially expected merely to finish his degree, he says that he’s received much more than university credits during his time here.

“I’m not only getting the degree that I wanted, but I’m also growing in my faith.”

Not only has he been invited to participate in multiple mission activities, but recently he was able to attend a faith and sports conference in Ottawa that challenged him to live out his faith through sport.

Jarvis recognizes that these blessings are not his alone; he hopes to take the skills he’s learning at TWU and use

them to benefit his home community back in Africa.

“I really want to go back home to share what God gave me and brought me to Canada to do,” he said.

“This perspective is shared by many international students at TWU,” said Darlene Heriot, TWU’s Scholarship and Planned Giving Manager.

In particular, a group of six international students who shared their stories at the University’s AfricanCambodian & International Student Fundraising Dinner.

Although each one of them has faced challenging circumstances— like poverty, hunger, or loss of family — they are all committed to bringing these blessings back to their home countries.

These students are able to study at TWU thanks in a large part to a donor that wanted TWU to sponsor students who were willing to commit to going back to their countries.

The generosity of donors, combined with the proceeds of fundraising dinners, has made it possible for students like Jarvis to be transformed by TWU’s educational culture and then use those blessings to bless others.

Twin passions shared by playwright Black Press

Questions of food security, farming and genetically modified food promise to be anything but dry when Fraser Common Farm presents Project Corndog in Aldergrove from Aug. 24-26.

Featuring a play that takes the farm itself as a massive stage, and an organic feast and conversation session between audience, actors and farmers to follow, the event was born of one woman’s twin passions. Playwright and starring actor Tallulah Winkelman will remount Project Corndog, a play she created based on her own experience on the land.

An actor for her entire adult life, Winkelman has been a farmer for the past 15 years, working her share of the organic Fraser Common Farm. She also works for FarmFolkCityFolk, an organization that supports community-based programs uniting urban dwellers with their food source.

“For a long time I kept the two aspects of my life separate,” Winkelman said.

“It changed me to eat food that I actually knew the ground it grew on. I wanted to bring people in to the farm to see if it affected them the same way. So I wrote a play.”

The result was Project Corndog, a humourous look at what happens after an organic farmer is sued by a genetically modified food giant.

shares some Brechtian theatre ideals. Interestingly, she and her fellow actors Sarah May Redmond and Tom Jones were all performing in Brecht plays last summer. ( Jones and Redmond starred in Graffiti’s 2011 production, The Salt Spring Chalk Circle.)

“If you ask whether it is a call to action, then yes, indeed it is,” Winkelman said.

“It asks us, ‘how do we want to move on from here?’”

At the same time, she said, “It’s meant to be more than a lecture.

It’s meant to be an entertainment, something fun.”

Winkelman said the dinner that follows the play is equally important to the event as the performance.

Ticket holders, theatre crew and the people who grew and prepared the food join together in discussion of what they’ve seen in the play and the greater surrounding issues, and they build community in the sharing of the meal itself.

The meal is prepared by Chef Adrian Beaty of Seasonal Experience and served with Lotusland Vineyard Wine.

A two-day cycling trip from Seattle to Vancouver brought more than 1,400 riders through Aldergrove on the weekend, including Brad Johnson, Luci Clark and Julie Match of Marysville, Washington. They stopped off briefly at Otter Co-op for a rest on one of the hottest days of the year. The event is sponsored by Cascade Cycle Club of Seattle.

An Aldergrove man escaped unhurt when he accidentally spilled paint thinner on the stove of a travel trailer on which he had been carrying out repairs.

The trailer, valued at $10,000, was destroyed.

The fire occurred at about 3:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 13, in the 26100-block of 58 Ave. Heat from the flames melted the siding of a four bay garage, causing about $5,000 damage, said Bruce Ferguson, spokesman for the Township fire department.

There were no injuries in another fire that occurred three hours later in the 7300-block of 199 Street when an occupant left oil on the stove.

It ignited, setting fire to kitchen cabinets.

Damage could reach $10,000, Ferguson said.

Thirty minutes past midnight on Wednesday morning, Aug. 15, a piece of machinery that either malfunctioned or overheated caused a fire at Surrey Cedar mill, in the 23800-block of Fraser Highway. The fire worked through sawdust and got into scrap on the floor of a shed, working its way into a pile of lumber.

The building’s only sprinkler was activated and extinguished the fire, Ferguson said.

“If the sprinkler had malfunctioned it would have been a totally different outcome,” he said.

No employees were on site, and damage was kept to less than $1,000.

Local elected officials should get seats on the BC Transit board and have more say on changes that affect their local service, a review of BC Transit operations has recommended.

Transportation Minister Blair Lekstrom appointed a review team in March after complaints that the provincially appointed BC Transit board was making costly changes without consulting the communities whose fares and property taxes cover more than half the cost of transit service.

Joe Stanhope, chair of the Nanaimo Regional District, was on hand with Lekstrom to release the report Tuesday. Stanhope said the recommendations of the review team are “exactly what we wanted.

“There were some problems, and the basic problems were communications,” he said.

Stanhope raised the alarm in 2011 after BC Transit notified local officials of a doubling of management fees, after municipalities had adopted their budgets for the year. Nanaimo also protested a plan to move some of the community’s new buses

VICTORIA – The B.C. government’s emergency committee on timber supply has produced its report, but it leaves many of the big questions unanswered.

Can the Burns Lake sawmill, destroyed by fire last winter, be given enough timber to rebuild? It’s likely, committee members concluded, if areas that are currently considered “marginally economic” are harvested.

With nearly half the pine in that region dead from beetle infestation, and much of the better timber already cut, that means harvesting areas that would produce only about two-thirds of the volume that is currently considered economical to log.

Will eight more sawmills have to close once the beetlekilled timber becomes too degraded to cut in the next few years?

Committee members hold out hope that extending the cut to less economic timber stands can reduce this impact as well. But with the current cut far above historical levels to maximize beetle-kill harvest, some industry contraction seems inevitable.

All this depends on adequate forest inventory and investment in replanting, fertilizing and provision of additional roads and power lines that would allow access to timber and potential bioenergy development. And that is where the political fight lies

ahead.

The timber supply committee delivered a unanimous report, despite the harsh divisions between the B.C. Liberal and NDP members who serve on it.

NDP forest critic Norm Macdonald, vice chair of the committee, agreed it did good work during the seven months it has toured affected areas of the B.C. Interior. But he said the roots of the problem go back a decade, to when the B.C. Liberals started reducing support for forest health just as the beetle epidemic was spreading.

Ten years ago the government removed the obligation for the province to reforest areas affected by disease and fire. This was not only at the peak of the epidemic, it was one year before devastating wildfires raced through the Interior in the summer of 2003.

“In 2002, the government removed its obligation to replant those areas, and cut the budget by 90 per cent,” Macdonald told me. “The three-year budget that’s in front of us is keeping on the downward slide, and it’s not what people in communities are saying is the answer. So that has to change.”

The opposition, the auditor general and various forest experts have been blasting the government for the degraded state of the timber inventory, at a time when environmental

changes have been sweeping.

Steve Thomson, minister of the newly amalgamated forests, lands and natural resource operations ministry, points to the urgent efforts to upgrade the government’s detailed picture of the state of the forests, so it can consider new cutting, planting and fertilizing efforts.

But there’s no denying that he came to the job in a crisis that will take more spending in the future, and he will have a hard time finding it as Finance Minister Kevin Falcon looks to balance the books for the 2013 election.

If nothing else, the pine beetle epidemic has forced the B.C. government to consider some of the intensive forest management that we hear about in Scandinavia, one of those places that supplies B.C. with wood furniture.

And it has prompted renewed interest in offering new forest tenures to aboriginal communities with unresolved resource claims.

Under current law, the government can only directly award new forest tenures to aboriginal communities. So part of the committee’s proposed solution is to “expedite negotiations” with the Burns Lake First Nations to give them a chance to harvest some of the marginally economic forest areas that remain.

VANCOUVER – A Victoria businessman is heading up a proposal to build a $13-billion oil refinery in Kitimat.

David Black, chairman and owner of Black Press, announced Friday he wants to build a world scale oil refinery at Kitimat, B.C. Black told a news conference in Vancouver Friday he is submitting an environmental assessment application to build a “world scale” oil refinery on behalf of Kitimat Clean Ltd., a company owned by Black. The application to the B.C. Environmental Assessment Office is expected this fall.

The proposed refinery would be big enough to process all the diluted bitumen carried by Enbridge’s proposed Northern Gateway pipeline. Black said he has had extensive discussions with Enbridge and other players in the Canadian oil industry, but none has so far offered to back the project.

Black said he will use his own money to finance the proposal through environmental assessment, which he expects to cost several million dollars. After that, he said investors would be needed to complete it, assuming both the refinery and the pipeline receive approval.

He has had preliminary meetings with Kitimat and Terrace councils, as well as the Haisla and Kitselas First Nations in the region.

The proposed site is a 3,000-hectare Crown industrial property between Terrace and Kitimat.

Kitimat Mayor Joanne Monaghan spoke by phone to the news conference, offering encouragement for the proposal. But Black acknowledged he does not yet have formal support from communities or investors.

“I see myself as a catalyst to make this happen,” said Black, who first proposed the idea to the province and the industry seven years ago when he was chairman of the B.C. Progress Board.

Black is working with Glenn McGinnis, a consulting engineer and former manager of the Ioco oil refinery in Port Moody.

“We want it [the Kitimat refinery] to be the cleanest and greenest upgrading and refining site in the world,” McGinnis said.

The refinery would produce 240,000 barrels per day of diesel, 100,000 barrels per day of gasoline and 50,000 barrels per day of kerosene or aviation fuel, refined from heavy oil.

Among those attending the news conference was Art Sterritt, executive director of the Coastal First Nations, a group in the Kitimat area that has strongly opposed the pipeline proposal. Sterritt disputed Black’s assertion that a B.C. refinery “solves half of the problem” with exported oil by shipping refined gasoline, jet fuel and diesel in tankers instead of heavy crude. Those products have their own risks, Sterritt said.

Black pointed out that without marine shipments of those fuels, the remote coastal communities Sterritt represents would not be able to function. The lighter fuel products are still an environmental hazard, but they dissipate much more quickly and do not persist for many years like spilled heavy crude, he said.

NDP energy critic John Horgan was also skeptical.

“At this point, it’s a proposal without business partners and without First Nations and local community support,” Horgan said. “It doesn’t change our position [opposing] the Enbridge Northern Gateway project.”

Black said the refinery will mean nearly 6,000 construction jobs over a five-year period, 3,000 permanent jobs at the refinery and tax revenue for various levels of government.

Resident asks for ‘fair hearing’ Editor: I am a resident living on Baynes Street, in the proposed “East Gloucester” area. We have lived here for about 11 years. I recently attended the meeting at the Brander Hall regarding the drainage tax and the proposed industrial plan for Gloucester East.

I was kind of shocked with the language that was used by some of the people there. I think we can get our point across without all the profanity and name calling.

People seem to think that we are getting rich off “our property” but I can assure you that is not the case I am offended at being called “money hungry”, “greedy” or ”one of those people”, and that we’re being offered the “moon and stars” by the developer.

We have not received any monies from the developer, contrary to

what people are saying.

Recently we had a “person,” who was also at the Bradner Hall meeting, all dressed in camouflage sneaking through the bushes taking pictures of our property and my guess, looking for fish, or releasing fish in our creek, that dries up every year. Since then, I have seen him numerous times parked on our street. I can assure you that all the necessary environmental and traffic studies have already or will be done.

I would also like to point out that this is not viable farmland. I applaud Patrick Selinger for speaking out at the Bradner Hall meeting.

He is totally right about the poor soil conditions. I know that others wanted to speak for the Gloucester East properties, but were too intimidated by the hostile environment, including myself. People

seem to have a mob mentality at these meetings and won’t let you speak.

I hope the Honorable Mayor, Councillors and the ALC give everyone a fair hearing and not let the people from outside the Bradner Area bully their influence on them. When you look at the big picture you’re talking about a two per cent of the Bradner area for industrial. This area would be great for a community friendly industrial park.

It was said at the meeting that Abbotsford would go from collecting $70,000 to $11 million in taxes each year. Hey, that would pay for our drainage tax! Abbotsford is growing rapidly and we have to ensure our children can work and live in Abbotsford.

Green Can ‘threats’ heavyhanded Editor: Recently, there appeared on my front steps a pamphlet from the Township. It was a stern message about using my Green Can, bylaw No. 4845, etc. I’m sure most homeowners in the Township received this pamphlet.

Its message sounded threatening, so I read it over very carefully, as I do not always have a need to use my Green Can. I have a compost.

I felt quite intimidated until I read the note at the bottom of page 2.

This indicated that I could still use my compost, as it is still the most cost-effective way to dispose of uncooked fruits, vegetables, and lawn trimmings. I also use my compost for coffee grinds, old napkins, etc. I assumed this to be okay.

Relieved that I was not breaking bylaw No 4845, I then sat back in my easy chair and started to read the local paper. I nearly fell over backwards when I turned to the Township Page.

There staring at me was an example of a sad face sticker that the Township

is now going to issue to all who do not put out a Green Can on garbage day. I was horrified.

What am I to do? What will my neighbours think of me — A bylaw breaker in their midst?

I’m sure the bylaw officer will be cruising the neighbourhoods looking for sad face stickers, ticket book in hand. It is just a matter of time before the bylaw enforcement officer hands me my ticket. Oh the shame.

I am so confused.

Call for a rural coalition

Editor: Several years ago, the communities of Bradner and Mt. Lehman presented shared traffic concerns to council.

They did so under the Northwest Abbotsford Coalition, (NAC). The NAC area covered from the Fraser River to Downes Road, and from Highway 11 to the Abbotsford-Langley border.

One voice for these communities was an effective way to communicate.

With the recent application to extract cheap agricultural land from the ALR and rezone it to a much greater value per acre, our lifestyle will be irrevocably altered, and the NAC area will be inundated with industrial trucks on country roads not designed to carry this traffic or volumes.

I believe that the communities within the NAC need to form a coalition which then reaches a consensus, and presents such to council as an undivided, powerful voice. A coalition is both urgent and is needed now.

Cell Towers: Regulation and Processes The federal government, through Industry Canada, is responsible for regulating radiocommunication. This includes approving each site on which radio apparatus, including antenna systems such as cell phone towers, may be located, based on Industry Canada’s general and specific technical requirements.

In exercising its mandate, Industry Canada believes that it is important that antenna systems be deployed in a manner that considers local surroundings. In this regard, Industry Canada requires proponents of cell towers to follow local government policies with respect to public notification.

In the Township of Langley, local requirements are contained in the Telecommunications Tower Master Plan Policy, which requires proponents to hold a community consultation meeting as part of the public consultation process. Residents with questions or comments about the proposed tower can make their views known through this public consultation process. Public input obtained by the proponents at the meeting is passed on to Township staff, for presentation to Township Council.

Council does not have the authority to approve or reject cell tower applications. Council’s ability is limited to either objecting or not objecting to such installations in its referrals to Industry Canada.

Council does not have legislated authority to do anything else.

Should Council have no objection to the proposed installation, the proponent will be permitted by Industry Canada to proceed, subject to compliance with their requirements. In the event that Council expresses objections that are considered by Industry Canada to be relevant and the proponent still wishes to proceed with an installation, Industry Canada will make a final decision as to whether to:

Gorgeous day for car buffs

Perfect weather contributed to a successful car show and shine hosted by Aldergrove Legion on August 11.

Entries were down slightly, with 95 cars on show, and funds raised for Legion charities were also down, but organizers were still pleased.

“We had a motorhome raffle last year, which raised much of the $15,000 we donated last year,” said Deb Gray. “We didn’t have that kind of raffle this year, but still it turned out really well.”

A final tally of funds raised will be made this coming week by the car show committee and this amount will be presented

The Envision Financial Community Endowment administrated by First West Foundation has provided a $10,000 grant to the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Langley in support of its One-to-One Mentoring Program.

The program focuses on a mentor relationship and aims to help children and youth increase their self esteem, develop character and respect, and make better lifestyle choices.

Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Langley was first established in 1974.

Serving as role models, the mentors teach the kids the importance of giving and giving back, of staying in school, and for having respect for family, peers and community.

The One-to-One Mentoring Program provides children who may be lacking positive role models in their lives with

Aldergrove’s CIBC branch is hosting a “FUN-raiser” this week in conjunction with the Run for the Cure.

The event is called “Cut for the Cure” which is a cuta-thon involving professional stylists who are donating their time trimming and cutting

hair for anyone who is interested or in need.

Minimum donation per cut or trim is $20 with 100 per cent of the proceeds going to breast cancer research.

This event will be held on Thursday, August 23 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the branch which is located at 3082 - 272

Street, Aldergrove.

Another “FUN-raiser” on that day at the same location is called “Raising Dough For Breast Cancer”. CIBC staff will be selling individual donuts or boxes of donuts from Krispy Kreme, freshly baked that morning. A dozen box is $10 or $1 per donut.

Heat pleased with front-loaded home schedule

In the event of an NHL lockout, the Abbotsford Heat are in prime position to take advantage. A frontloaded slate of home games is one of the hallmarks of the Heat’s 201213 schedule, released last Friday.

Ten of the Heat’s first 13 games of the campaign will be played at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre. That’s in marked contrast to last season, when just eight of the Heat’s first 25 games were at home.

The home-heavy itinerary in the early going would seem to stand the Heat in good stead if there’s an NHL work stoppage, in terms of generating local interest in the absence of NHL games.

Abbotsford opens at home on Friday, Oct. 12 against the Peoria

Rivermen, and Heat president Ryan Walter said he’s happy with the hand his team has been dealt.

“I think it’s as good as we can get at home,” he said. “We have 13 Friday nights, 13 Saturday nights.

We’re really pleased about that.”

The Heat are switching divisions this season, moving from the West to the North. That means they’ll see more of their Canadian rivals, the Toronto Marlies and the Hamilton Bulldogs. Both teams visit the AESC four times.

The Heat have also retained their eight-game series – four home, four away – with the Chicago Wolves.

The Vancouver Canucks’ affiliate is far and away the Heat’s best-drawing opponent, and they visit on Oct. 19-20 and Jan. 11-12.

A pair of local hockey players have made the final roster and will play at the U18 national women’s championships.

Langley’s Chelsea Wilson and Aldergrove’s Sarah Potomak were on the final roster unveiled by BC Hockey Aug. 9.

The roster was selected following a Team BC summer development camp with the Kazakhstan women’s national team.

Kazakhstan won two out of the three games they played in Salmon Arm. Wilson, who turns 16

Langley readies for Bug invasion

Don’t play “punch buggy no returns” while out on the road in Langley on the weekend

of Aug. 24-26 because your shoulder will get really sore.

The 21st annual Great Canadian VW Show is coming to Langley with

thousands of old and new VWs expected to drive into the Langley Events Centre on Sunday morning for Canada’s biggest VW show and shine.

This is the second year Langley has hosted what is the largest VW event in the Pacific Northwest with around 400 new and old, air and water cooled VWs on display and ready for judging throughout the parking lot.

Families can enjoy taking part in a variety of activities, games and everything from ice cream to burgers will be served.

Starting at 9 a.m., come out and see vintage air cooled Beetle bugs and vans or old water cooled Rabbits, said event organizer Geoff Peterson.

The event coincides with Langley’s International Festival at

neighbouring Willoughby Park.

“Spectators start coming in as early as 7 a.m.

Usually we have around 2,000 to 4,000 come to the show. We have a whole convoy from California come and from Utah,” said Peterson. “Some come from Germany and Alberta.”

This year plans to be extra special as VW celebrates 60 years in Canada.

Langley’s Gold Key Volkswagen is one of the sponsors and plan to have a big presence at the show.

“I haven’t missed the Great Canadian VW show in 16 years,” said Gold Key sales manager Tobias Von Kreeft.

He plans to have a fleet of VWs, from an all original white 1961 VW bug, with all original interior

as well as an old VW van, some other older models and several brand new VWs, including the new Beetle.

The weekend begins with drag racing at the Mission Raceway Park on Friday night, gates open at 5 p.m. Saturday morning drivers can grab a pancake breakfast and a show and shine at Regency Voldswagen in Coquitlam and off to Sharks Club in Langley for dinner and a show and shine.

Expect to see hundreds of VWs take to the streets for a cruise to Langley’s Sharks Club and host hotel Sandman.

The lot at the Sharks Club, at 20169 88 Avenue, is expected to fill up quickly and opens at 5 p.m. Lots of prizes.

She leaves behind her beloved husband Elzear, of 68 years. She will be sadly missed by her 7 children; Jacqueline, Victor, Aurel, Rita, Susan, Jeanne and Donald. Also, her daughter-in-laws, son-in-laws and many grandchildren whose lives share the loss, of such a “beautiful, harmonious kindred spirit”. Blanche had many sisters and brothers and is survived by her brother, Sylva and her sisters, Rita and Jackie. Her accomplishments are too many to list. A mother, grandmother, wife and businesswoman extraordinaire!
