The Show & Shine is and always has been one of the “must attend” events for those that have a passion for antique, hotrods, classic and specialty vehicles. This year, Reid Street will be graced with some of the finest restored and preserved automobiles you will ever see.

On behalf of Council, I congratulate the organizers and welcome all the participants to what will no doubt be another successful “Show & Shine”. I would also like to thank the dedicated volunteers for their continued hard work in making this event such a success.

The 2012 Prospector's Steak - Out is upon us already As President I would like to welcome all the out of town participants. Lots of people bring their cars from all over the province. They come out for the whole weekend. Staying in our Hotels and campgrounds, eating in our restaurants, shopping in our stores. We also have a lot of folks from Quesnel that bring their vehicles out to the show.

The Prospector's Car Club will be hosting a three-day event again this year. We are happy to offer the dinner and dance on Saturday night, for our car enthusiasts to enjoy.

Prospectors Car Club The Prospectors Car Club was started in 1997 to promote interest in classic and modified cars, trucks and motorcycles. From a charter membership of six (6), the club has grown to about 70 members today. Vehicle ownership is not a prerequisite for membership; you only need a love for cars to be welcome.

1956 Ford F-100 We have a habit of buying and looking through the Old Car Trader or as some refer to it as the Wish Book. After all, there is no harm in window-shopping is there? Wrong!

they? We know people with covered car haulers.

Someone should be available for this wild goose chase. Well, a few conversations with friends, and we have a ride for our new acquisition.

In the October 2009 issue of the Trader on the colour pages was a 1956 Ford pick-up, with flames.

The description was interesting; ’56 Ford pick-up, 292 c.i.d. Thunderbird engine, four-speed, older restoration. The description screamed “old skool custom”. We sent an email to get more pictures, and negotiated a fair price. So what is the catch you ask? It’s in Saskatchawan. Too far away to go look at, because pictures don’t tell you everything.

Hey! Wait a minute. We have an acquaintance that lives there. Maybe he’ll check it out for us. One phone call. He checks it for us! It does look as good as the pictures. Fantastic!

Before mid-November the 1956 Ford was in Quesnel. It was everything we hoped it to be. Over the winter we did work to it, some was required to pass the safety inspections. A few cosmetic things were done like covering the wiring and attaching it properly. Adding a few lights etc. to make it “our” ride. By the end of March the ride was ready for the road and we had it licensed.

We love to drive it around, and see peoples eyes light up when they see it. This old truck is far from perfect, but no matter it is a lot of fun. So keep on trucking (or car-ing) this summer and enjoy our rides.

Don and Peggy Cunningham – Proud Owners of a 1971 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme In 1970 my wife, Peggy and I, and our two children, Clayton and Teresa lived in Quesnel. My parents lived in Prince George. Unfortunately, in the fall of 1970, my father passed away at the age of 56 due to a heart attack. My father had worked for a company that provided them with a vehicle. My mother realized she would need to replace her aging Austin A55 and so we went ‘car shopping’. I had originally thought a Ford Maverick would suit her finances best but she immediately fell in love with a new 1971 metallic blue, Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, hard top coupe with a white vinyl roof, a Delta Rocket 88, 350 cubic inch V8 engine and a Turbo Hydra-matic transmission. I admit, it did make the Ford Maverick look a little wimpish.

Zip forward to 2005. My mother is now in a senior’s home in Penticton, B.C. At the age of 88, her precious Cutlass is parked in underground parking. Over the years, due to slower reflexes and waning eye sight, the precious Cutlass is not only getting older but has received a few minor bumps and bruises too. In addition, the Penticton heat has taken its toll on the paint, vinyl roof and the cars interior. Aw, but mechanically it has been well maintained. My mother wanted to sell it to a family member who would get it refurbished.

The deal – I give each of my four siblings $200 and the car was mine. The deal got wrapped up – I drive the Cutlass out of underground parking and with Peggy behind me in her Honda Accord, we head back to Quesnel via the Coquihalla Connector. I pulled into a service station in Cache Creek to fuel up. Peggy pulls in beside me, lowers her window and says, “Do you

have to fill up already?”. My response, “I’m banging on 8, Baby. You’re only banging on 4”.

We made it home without a hitch. Now what? Both bumpers have some minor damage, all four wheel wells have some rust and it clearly needs nwew paint, a refinished vinyl roof and new upholstery. Since I have no knowledge (and less equipment) to do the job myself, I start looking around. Herb Jensen came quickly to the top of my list. He looked after the body work, paint job and refinishing the vinyl roof.

Tradewinds Upholstery did the interior, Jerry Brown at Prism Towing moved the car when it was unlicensed and needed to be moved. Dan Kaleta, at Dan’s Engine Shop, did a mechanical check. I have since had the transmission replaced by Wayne Wright at Wright Choice Automotive. Everyone did a fabulous job.

The car has been entered in several car shows including the Armstrong Fair, Prince George Auto Show, a vintage car show at Cottonwood House on the Barkerville Highway and of course the Prospectors car shows in Quesnel.

For 2012, the Cutlass needs a new brake light and odometer cable. We can hardly wait to take the cover off, fire up the Rocket 88 and back it out of the barn for another summer of enjoyment. We look forward to regrouping at A&W and admiring the other vehicles on display. And of course, thanks to the Prospectors Car Club for adding a whole new dimension, for Peggy and me, to owning a vintage car.

MY LITTLE RED 1978 GREMLIN I have owned my 1978 Gremlin for 28 years, and it is the very car I learned to drive with. The car has a 258 cu in six cylinder engine which has been rebuilt, but the transmission and rear-end are original. I began restoring my car in 2001 after joining the Prospectors Car Club, I received much needed advice and encouragement from many of the members of the club to do so. I have updated the interior with new vinyl seats, door panels, and a new rug throughout. It took about 3 years to get the car to where it is now, but I will continue to take a few more years to complete what I would like to do, such as removing the engine, painting the engine compartment and engine, re-installing it, and finishing it off with all the chrome accessories I can get. As most of my friends know, I love chrome!!!!!!

In the mean-time I will continue to attend about 5 car shows a year, which include Williams Lake, Prince George, 100 Mile House, Hixon, and Quesnel. Williams Lake show has a class for 1970-1979 which I fit into and have won it three times since attending.

In 2006 I attended the Cruisin' Classics Father's Day Show & Shine in Prince George and to my surprise took the President's trophy for mild custom!!!!! In 100 Mile House I took home a award for best other brand which is an award for any make of vehicle other than Ford/Chev/Dodge. As for the Hixon car show, which is held every August, I have attended this show every year for 10 years and can happily say that I have won a award there every year since it's beginning, Best Street Machine-Original. At the local Prospectors Car Club show in Quesnel, I have been fortunate to win 2 awards over the years, this has been especially nice as it in my home town with many cars coming from all over the province, as well as Alberta. I hope to attend the Hot August Nite's show in Kamloops next year, as I have now purchased a trailer in which to haul my car on. I will be very interested to see what kind of impression my little red car will have on the people there and can't wait to hear all the interesting stories from the many folks who come out to the show.

Prospectors Car Club Shop Tours The Prospectors Car Club in conjunction with various other northern car clubs, have organized and participated in shop tours for 10 years. What is a shop tour you ask? Well, I will attempt to explain so you can come and see for yourself next year.

I am sure shop tours started long before our car club came up with the idea. As car enthusiasts have discovered from day one, we always want to see what the guy next door or in the next community or town is doing to their car, so perhaps we can learn from it and adapt their ideas to our car. Most car guys and girls love looking at cars, especially ones that are partway through a rebuild, or torn open to see the inner guts of the vehicle. I am sure everyone who loves cars has had a buddy who has called and said, “Come on over and see my car, I can't seem to fix it”. Those words can usually get the juices flowing to help out your buddy, and see what he is doing to it.

Well, the Prospectors Car Club has taken this small idea and reworked it to a grander scale. We invite all our car club buddies, as well as other local car clubs and friends, we then get on a 40-50 passenger bus and travel to Prince George to see what their club members are working on. Of course it takes a bit of previously planned organization to plan to visit 8-10 shops for the day, lots of coffee is supplied, along with lunch for those hungry car guys and girls. And in return the Prince George car clubs travel to Quesnel to see what car projects we are currently working on.

You never know what you will find in people's shops, projects cars can vary from the 1920's, 30's all the way up to the 1990's.

All car enthusiasts have different ideas on how a project should proceed, how to lift a car off the ground to work on it, or spin it completely around to get at all sides of the car. There are tin bashers who think they can mold metal to fit better than those that use

a English Wheel, or using lead to fabricate a part vs using body filler to make everything fit. All ideas have merit, it is just what different people think works for them. We see rusted out cars that some will look at and think, “That car will never drive down the road again, it is beyond hope”, and surprise, surprise, a year or two later, it wins an award at a car show. Car guys drag rusted out junkers from all over the country to their shops to begin a dream, something they have wanted to do for a long time, some lose interest, others excel with their hands to turn a piece of rusted metal into a work of art. We all have a different idea of what a restored car should be, some think it should always stay original, as it was built by the factory. Others like the chrome, big engines, wide tires, and fancy paint of a hot rod, and there-in lies the project, each person has their own ideas what they want from a shop project.

These shop tours have grown each year we have done them, from a few that traveled in their own vehicles to over a hundred or so we had attend in Quesnel in 2012. It is usually the first car event outing in the spring of the year, sometimes still with some snow on the ground, but that has never stopped a car guy before, and it certainly doesn't deter anyone. There is always lots of laughs on the bus, and some even are packing parts home they found at others shops, and that is what it is all about, car guys and girls getting together to look at what will be someones daily driver next year. So, if you think you want to look at other guys restoration projects, give us a call next spring and come along, perhaps you may someday have a shop to open for others to see what project you are working on.

The Life of a '63 Pontiac Grand Prix I started my life at the Pontiac factory, and soon moved to Livermore, California to a GM dealership owned by a movie actor named Ozzie Davis. You may remember him as the fella that sold bait in the movie Grumpy Old Men. His name is on the licence plate frame on me still.

I was bought by a nice couple who lived in the area. A few years later, moved to Bellevue, Wash. They were my owners for my first 30 yrs. They took good care of me, judging by all the records that were found in my trunk. I remember back several years ago, I needed a new coat. The owner must have loved the look I had, as my new coat of paint was the same colour.

I then immigrated to Canada, and lived with a nice old couple in Slocan, BC. They must have been real proud of me as they saved a picture newspaper article of me in a local parade. That article was saved and added to the on-going scrap book of my life. In the 6 years with them, they too, took real good care of me.

My carpet was starting to look worn and ragged, so they kindly bought me a new rug throughout. They also registered me with the PHS (Pontiac Historical Service) and now I have all the paper work of my birth, including the price tag from the side window when I was new.

It was time for me to move along yet again. I moved to Princeton, BC were I was loved for 10 years. During that time, I was shown at several car shows, including Kamloops, Penticton, and Reno. I loved driving thru the small towns, smiling the whole time in the sunshine.

Presently, I live in Quesnel, BC and am driven by the proud couple named Rusty & Connie Stevens, who just happen to be the brother of the previous owners. Although my 389cid - 4bbl can be thirsty, they take me out whenever possible. Being a 2dr HT, I love going down the highway with the power windows down and the breeze blowing thru. And yes, I still love being in the sunshine.

My Pony Car It has been 10 years since I made the decision (with prompting and help from my car buddies) to acquire my classic car. At the time I wasn't sure if I wanted a hobby of fixing a old car, or if I even had the knowledge on how to do it right. Since then I haven't regretted going in the direction I did and with a lot of help from other car enthusiasts, I have achieved the goal of restoring an old car to new condition again.

In the summer of 2002, a friend told me about a 1966 Mustang coupe that was for sale with a 302 cu in engine and a 3 speed transmission, and perhaps I should give some thought to buying this for a project. He said he would help me with the work and true to his word, after I made the deal, he helped me out immensely. I drove the car home and then the work began, first task was fixing the problem that would allow the car to stop properly, I found the brakes on the front of the car were pretty much shot and needed new shoes, brakes cylinders, and some lines, the only items salvageable were the brake drums. but after many years of neglect, there were many things that were seized and extremely stubborn to replace.

Once that issue was fixed, I moved on to replacing both front fenders, hood, grill parts, valance, and front park lights and wiring. I found after some research of previous owners that this car had been in an accident and the front end was only repaired, not fixed with new parts, so some of the work was well.......questionable, shall we say. Once all the new parts were installed and aligned, it was time for paint. My friend offered to assist with the sanding, priming, and painting project, and it is a good thing he knew what he was doing, because I certainly didn't. I now have a much greater appreciation of those in the industry of body work and one of the dirtiest jobs in the world, sanding old paint off the car. We found there were 9 coats of paint on some parts of the car, and most of it was stubborn paint to remove. I now know I never ever want to tackle sanding and painting a car again.

After many hours of finger ruining sanding my wife and I, and my friend and his wife felt we were ready to prime and sand some more then paint. We had picked a 1967 Bolero Red colour from a vehicle we had seen at a car show the summer before, so that is the colour my friend applied. A few days later I took the car home and started assembling all those parts that came off prior to sand, prime and paint. It is a good thing my memory was better then, as I could still remember where everything went.

And sure enough, there were no parts left when I was finished, amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now that I thought the work was all done, I could finally

drive and enjoy it, my wife and I put the tunes on and away we went to our first Friday night get-to-gether at A & W. We met many new friends and of course lots of old ones we new had restored cars. While on the cruise that night, we got lots of thumbs up from people on the street who obviously appreciated all the hours of work we had put into our restoration. That first year we had the car finished we went to many shows to see if our car was done as good as others, and low and behold we even won a trophy. We trailered the car to Dawson Creek, Prince George, and Kamloops, and drove to shows closer to home in Williams Lake, Hixon, and of course our own Prospectors Show and Shine. We found that there was a constant stream of people at these shows always coming up to tell us their own story of when they had a car just like ours many, many years ago, and for what-ever reason they had gotten rid of it and now wish they had it back. We are certainly glad to hear the restoration of vehicles is not losing it's luster in our part of the world.

Since 2002 I have added a few items to the car to upgrade it to our satisfaction. I checked the vehicle vin number and found the car came with a 4-speed transmission back in 1966, so I began the search for one.

Low and behold a friend just down the road had 2 Ford top-loader 4-speed tranys, and I was able to talk him out of them for a small fee. I found the best one needed a re-build, as it had no 2nd or 3rd gears. Once that was repaired I searched and found a 4-speed Hurst shifter to make it all come together. When I was installing it, I decided to purchase and install a new heavy duty clutch and pressure plate along with a throw-out bearing to make things run smoothly. I also added a low profile aluminum intake manifold to go with my four barrel carburetor. After attending a few shows and seeing what other cars looked like and how they were finished, I felt my Pony car wasn't up to this standard, so I went to a trained professional for some TLC to make everything smoother and shinier. After a complete repaint, I put it all back together and the first car show out I won a trophy for best repaint, for that I was very happy.

As I look back on the 10 years that I have worked on my car, I have to say this project has been a lot of fun, it means a whole lot more when you have a hand in making it happen, vs buying it finished. But the best part of restoring this Pony car is getting out and driving it on cruises with others who feel the same.

THE SHELBY CALLED 'KARDIAC' When he was 19 years old Gordon Phillips went to Vancouver and test drove a 1967 Shelby GT 500. Being a practical person he came home with a pick-up he could use for work. Fifteen years ago he found a 1967 Shelby for sale in Hixon B.C. and finally bought his dream car. Over the next twelve years, with the help of friends he worked on restoring the car....three years ago realizing that unless he got some help he wouldn't get to enjoy the finished project...he took the car to JF Kustoms in Osoyoos B.C. The car is an early model real Shelby GT500 and featured a functional airflow vent to the rear brakes, a rollbar with shoulder harnesses, inboard headlights and was the first one to come off the assembly line painted brittany blue. It was originally sold through Fogg Motors in New Westminster B.C. After customizing, the car was painted mocha with silver pinstriping and had a butterscotch leather interior with four bucket seats, leather wrapped roll bar and a painted to match console...designed by Lee Baxter Unholstery. It is as detailed and finished underneath as it is on top. Some of the features of the car are.. a FE427 sideoiler engine with borla fuel injection, tremec TKO 600 transmission and Curtis Speed Equipment designed a One Of wheel to resemble the original Shelby wheel and steering wheel to match.

By February 18, 2012 the car was off to Detroit to compete for the coveted Ridler Award. Out of approximately a thousand cars, 61 were judged eligible

and the Shelby from Quesnel B.C. Canada was one of them. It was chosen as one of the Great 8 contenders for the Ridler Award. This is believed to be the first time a Mustang - much less a Shelby has ever qualified as a Great 8 Ridler Contender! And only two Canadians have ever won the Ridler Award.

On to Chicago where it was granted Select 6 status for the Legend Cup. Boise and Portland car shows followed with many awards won.The car had earned enough points in just four showings to be one of twenty- four cars invited by the Internatioal Car Show Association to the championship finals in Omaha, Nebraska where "Kardiac" took second place overall. Back across the USA to Spokane where the car won the Trendsetter trophy, Best in Show and took home the Washington Cup. Two months after this incredible journey began we had our first Canadian showing in Abbotsford at the BC Classic and Custom Car show where the top awards went to the mocha coloured Shelby.

Barrett-Jackson THE BARRETT-JACKSON BUYING EXPERIENCE September 2010 was our first time to attend the BarrettJackson Collector Car Auction in Las Vegas. We went with friends who had a purchaser bidder pass, so we were able to get guests passes and go with them. Only bidders and guests are permitted to sit down on the floor for the auction at the convention center at Mandalay Bay Resort and Hotel. It allows you to go on stage and inspect the cars as they pass through and are auctioned. You also get free alcohol from the auction company as long as you are on the floor, but be very careful with the free drinks because you might end up buying something for a outrageous price if you consume to much, bidding over your limit can land you in some serious hot water.

In September 2011 we decided we might like to buy from the Las Vegas auction. In July we went to the BarrettJackson web site and printed out the bidder information package. Big suggestion, proof read your papers, especially your bank letter. Once we completed all the necessary paper-work, we sent the package to Barrett-Jackson by courier. In August they contacted us to say we had been accepted, Marvin being the bidder, and I was his guest for the Las Vegas auction. In addition to that, all flight and hotel room bookings were our responsibility and we did that as soon as possible, we stayed at the Mandalay Bay Hotel as it was much more convenient for us.

The day before the auction started, we went to the BarrettJackson office at Mandalay Bay Hotel and got our bidder package, which included our passes, and tickets for the evenings welcome party. Next morning while the automotive memorabilia was being auctioned off between 9am and 11 am, we headed to the Mandalay Bay Convention center to view the cars that would be coming up for auction. We were able to get up close and check everything out and see if there was anything we might want to buy. Each morning there is a list of vehicles that will be auctioned off that day, as well as the order in which they will come up to the staging area. This way you can keep track of the sale prices and where the special vehicle is you might have picked to buy.

At the 2011 Las Vegas auction we bought a 1969 Mustang Mach 1—428 Cobra Jet on the Friday evening. We had looked at the car on Thursday in the viewing area and had a chance to talk to the owner –something you don't often get a chance to do. We also watched as they started the car and drove it to the Mothers waxing area. It looked and sounded real good, but you must remember, it is always AS IS when you buy. Something to mention here, is that when you watch the bidding boards above the stage where it shows Canadian dollars, prepare to pay more. The

Canadian dollar exchange has nothing to do with us as we get the rate at our bank the day we send the payment to Barrett-Jackson when we get home. Also, there is a 10% buyers fee for the price paid at the auction.

Once you have signed for the auction purchase of the vehicle you bought you take your bid paperwork to the Barrett-Jackson office behind the stage. You must make transportation arrangements for hauling your car home before you pay for your purchase, we chose TFX International out of Ontario because they looked after all the paperwork and duty at the border, and they have been hauling cars for years. You also must contact your local insurance company to put coverage on your purchase for 30 days to cover the storage and trip home. Our Mustang Mach 1 was then removed from the auction site and put into storage in a secure off site enclosed area until the truck was loaded and began the trip to our area. At that point the Barrett-Jackson company told us we could wire the money to them when we got home the following Monday, and at that time you can only hope the dollar doesn't dive.

It took three weeks for our Mach 1 to arrive in Kamloops as there were a lot of cars to come to Canada. A friend lent us an enclosed trailer and off we went to Kamloops to pick it up. We took a money order with us to pay for the duty and transportation to the TFX driver and got all the necessary paper work. Of the three vehicles that came to our town on that truck, ours was the only one that would start and could be driven off the transport truck, dead batteries and lack of fuel were issues we didn't have.

Then more money had to change hands, first for insurance purposes a safety inspection needed to be done, and we chose Fountain Tire in Quesnel and they did a great job for us. Then PST had to be paid to ICBC, as you only pay GST at the border, and of course that is based on the Canadian dollar cost of the wire we sent to Barrett-Jackson. As usual, just another tax grab we felt there. We had a private appraisal done to insure for declared value with ICBC, and because this Mustang Mach 1 was a original and had numbers matching we were able to get collector plates which lowers the cost of insurance.

Finally at the end of October we got lucky, no snow. So we did get to drive the Mach 1 a few times before we had to put it away for the winter. No matter what, it was all worth it, for the pleasure we get every time we go for a drive.

If you've never been to a Barrett-Jackson auction, but love old vehicles, you must experience all that goes with the event that now happens four times a year. You'll see amazing thing and might even make a few new friends.
