Morrison grateful for second chance Emanuel Sequeira Western News Staff

Recovering in a Penticton hospital bed after a head-on collision nearly killed her, Janelle Morrison was already thinking of a triathlon comeback. “The only way I can describe it is that it’s something deep within me, almost unexplainable, said Morrison two years after her accident, adding it was on her mind from her first memory upon waking up from a week-long medically induced coma in the intensive care unit. “I was asking the nurses how long they thought I would have to take off training and racing. I had been awake for less than a day when I was taking my neck brace off because it was uncomfortable. I knew I didn’t need it. Morrison, a Penticton resident, was traveling on the Trans-Canada highway on Nov. 21 to Calgary when a Dodge Caravan struck her Toyota Matrix. Morrison was air lifted to Kamloops as she had extensive injuries including a ruptured diaphragm, punctured lung, broken femur, ankles, ulna (elbow bone), ribs, tibia and arms. In a story the Penticton

JANELLE MORRISON is ready to take on Subaru Ironman Canada after recovering from a car accident that nearly took her life in 2010.

Western News published on Dec. 7, 2010 about Morrison’s recovery, doctors said if not for her exceptional physical condition, Morrison might not have survived the horrific crash near Revelstoke. Morrison said she hasn’t thought of that comment too much.

“There was no doubt in my mind that this was a true statement, so it didn’t surprise me, she said. “I was about as close to death as one can come and I needed every advantage to not only survive, but then to recover and make my way back racing as a professional triathlete.

What draws her back to compete in Subaru Ironman Canada is that she feels it “is the best race of the Ironman series on so many levels. I think that’s reason enough. Her introduction to triathlons came when she joined the local bike club in Fort St. John.

While cycling, she began to take an interest in triathlon through magazines that she found in high school. More than a decade would pass before she actually became a triathlete. Morrison didn’t really have much of an interest in sports. “I will admit, not proudly, that I failed physical eduction 10, she said. “Not because I couldn’t do it, but because I wasn’t interested, and usually didn’t show up. Something clicked in me that summer and I went from failing PE only months prior to getting As and beating the boys in the fitness tests. Her father had more of an influence on her as he was a speed skater at the time and that year had broken some long track Canadian records in the masters division. “I think this all made an impression on me and woke something up inside of me, she added. For the big race day of Aug. 26, Morrison’s plan for the 3.8 kilometre swim, 180-km bike and 42.2-km run is concerning herself with others only at the start of the swim and the last part of the run.

IRONMAN 2012

MORRISON - Passion for triathlons slowly started with cycling

Photos of Kelly Brothers Production

JANELLE MORRISON got back to training for triathlons as quickly as she could. She now aims to perform her best during Ironman Canada.

The former teacher who grew up in Fort St. John said it will be a long day and getting caught up in what others are doing will be draining mentally and physically. A pro since 2009, Morrison has learned that she always went out too hard in an Ironman and suffered in the end. She hopes a different approach will serve her better. “I have allowed the heat of the moment and the excitement to take over and I wasted too much energy on external things, and not enough focus on what I am doing and the task at hand,” she said. “The goal is to get around the course as fast as possible. And that means taking a deliberate and systematic approach, not a whimsical one based on emotion.” Morrison’s first race following recovery was the Osoyoos Desert Half Iron last month. “I was pleased with how I executed this race,” said Morrison. “Winning the race and being sixth overall to the men was nice, but it was the calm that I held in this race that I was most pleased with.” She also raced the Ironman Calgary 70.3, her comeback as a professional just a few weeks ago. Morrison placed ninth in her division, and 36th overall and was very disappointed. “I was very disappointed in how I dealt with things mentally, which in turn affected my race,” she said. “I’m also glad for the experience. I learned a tremendous amount in this race which will help going forward and getting back into racing mode.” As Morrison strives for a solid result on Sunday, she will have a large support cast. Plenty of friends and family near and far will be cheering her on.

“It will also be great to share in the experiWinning the race ence with the city of friends, and and being sixth Penticton, triathlon communities overall to the from all around on men was nice, race day,” she said. I had tremendous but it was the have amounts of support calm that I held getting back to where in this race that I I am now from so many. I am grateful to was most pleased share in the experience with so many of those with. people.” — Janelle Morrison Kelly Brothers Production (www.kellybrothers.ca) is producing a documentary on Morrison’s comeback, entitled A Second Chance, the Janelle Morrison Story (www.asecondchancefilm.ca). She said it’s “quite surreal actually,” when asked what it’s like to have a film produced about her. She hasn’t seen it yet. “I do know that having the documentary follow me for the last year-and-a-half was helpful because it reiterated to me that if documentary producers believed in me enough to spend all this time filming my recovery and comeback, that I could believe in myself just as much or more,” she said. Morrison felt more compelled to make her comeback to professional racing because, in a sense, she had been given the ultimate podium to express her message to a large audience. “Fall down seven times, stand up eight. Just never ever give up,” she said.

Teen excited to take on Ironman Canada Emanuel Sequeira Western News Staff

Hanna Burton has been a spectator and volunteer for Subaru Ironman Canada. On Aug. 26, the 18-year-old will have the eyes of those people on her as she experiences it as an athlete. She will be among the youngest in the ¿eld along with another Penticton athlete, Tyler Berthelsen. While Burton faces the 3.8 kilometre swim, 180-km bike and 42.2 km run, she will have her stepfather Brian Edge at her side. “Hope to be side-by-side the whole time,” said Edge. “Support her out there and give her encouragement. Just want to ¿nish, no time we want to do. It will be pretty special for Hanna if she can pull it off.” Edge said Burton gives him heck sometimes because he bugged her for so many years to sign up. “Then last year, this was her grad year so she talked to her mom and myself and said she wanted to have a big year,” explained Edge. “Do some special things. It’s a big challenge.” She’s excited to have Edge at her side because, “he is quite an inspiration” for her. “He has been my coach and go-to-guy,” she said. “I’m pretty nervous because it’s my ¿rst one. I

HANNA BURTON, 17, will be competing in Ironman Canada on Sunday.

don’t really have much pressure on myself.” The two have trained together and have shared a few laughs. One incident two weeks ago took place as they were biking on Green Mountain Road and they spotted a baby bear. “Hanna was feeling kind of tired at this point as we had just ridden over the Richter Pass and were heading home past the Apex Ranch on Green Mountain Road,” said Edge. “All of a sudden she put the pedal to the metal as she ¿gured out we were now in bear territory and she did not want to get left behind.” Another person who has inspired Burton is Jeff Symonds, who has won the Peach Classic Triathlon the last two years, and placed third in the 2011 Ironman 70.3 world championship. “He has been really good this year,” said Burton. “He has been

quite a big help with nutrition. He knows his stuff about the bike.” Burton has also received support from health specialists to help recover from injuries, including back problems. If it weren’t for them, Burton said she “probably couldn’t do it.” To prepare herself for Aug. 26, Burton completed the Oliver Half Iron, the Valley First Axel Merckx Granfondo Okanagan and the Peach Classic Triathlon. Burton hasn’t competed in a lot of sports aside from swimming, when she was a member of the KISU swim club, and she played rugby for three years. Rugby, however, began to take a toll on her body. Because of her experience in swimming, that is the leg of the course she most looks forward to. “I’m pretty con¿dent about the swim,” she said. “I have already done it quite a few times.” Her only concern is with the bike section. “I think she will do OK but it will be tough,” said Edge. “The bike cutoff is a bit of a concern. The main focus is racing smart and pushing for that bike cutoff.” Burton joked that doing the Subaru Ironman Canada is something she wanted to get off her bucket list. Story is reprinted from the Aug. 17 issue of the Penticton Western News.

IRONMAN 2012

Records over years impressive Emanuel Sequeira Western News Staff

Memorable athletic performances have helped shape the history of Ironman Canada in Penticton. First known as Canada Ultra Distance, Steve King, the events legendary commentators who helped bring the race to the sunny Okanagan community and, said it’s the records that people must look at. It all started in 1983, when Mike Wagstaff, Ron Addlington and Dyane Lynch, the top two finishers on the men’s side and women’s winner, completed the 3.8-kilometre swim, 180-km bike and 42.2-km run in 10:41:51, 11:16:01 and 15:36:47, respectively. The one thing in common they had was they all resided in Banff, Alta. at the time. From a pro standpoint, Germany’s Thomas Hellriegel’s record of 8:09:53 has stood since 1996. King also pointed

MARY BETH ELLIS, the 2011 Subaru Ironman Canada female winner, broke Erin Baker’s time of 9:05:28 when she crossed the finish line in 9:03:13.

out that Erin Baker’s mark of 9:05:28 from 1990 was broken last year by Mary Beth Ellis in 9:03:13. “Those were enormous

times and still are, said King. “And then you look at the individual splits. Mike Schaefer’s (swim in 43:54) since 1995.

Chris Lieto’s bike run of 4:25:26 (in 2005) which is a phenomenal ride. Colin Dignum running that 2:38:47 marathon (in 1997). Baker’s 2:49:53 is still a world record. We’ve been very fortunate to have those pro’s here. Sister Madonna Buder at one point held every record in five different age groups. That is now at three. “To hold five age group records is amazing, said King. “Bruce Burns had three different records. He still holds two of them (in the 40 to 44 age group, he completed the race in 9:21:23 in 1992, then five years later in 45 to 49 age group finished in 9:33: 40). Milos Kostic, at 70, if you look at that record 11:14:24 from last year, that would have given him second-place overall in that very first year. That tells you how phenomenal some of the age groupers

are. Kostic has the 65 to 69 age group record finishing in 11:11:53 in 2009. Peter Reid is still the only athlete to win the IMC and the Ford world championship in the same year. There have been others, including Reid’s former wife, Lori Bowden, to win both races in different years. Locally, Tom Evans and Wally Hild had their own memorable performances. King said it was incredible to watch Evans in 2003 after he was taken out by South Africa’s Raynard Tissink with a few kilometers. Tissink won in 8:35:11, while Evans finished in 8:37:01. “Tom came back the next year and blew away the field, from start to finish, led the whole way, said King of Evan’s 8:28:06 performance. “Only one other person has pretty much done that.

In the 25th anniversary book for Ironman, Kevin MacKinnon wrote about Hild, who in 1994 was diagnosed with near-terminal Hodgkin’s disease. Two years after his diagnosis, Hild kept his personal promise and finished Ironman. According to King, Hild was considered a local favourite and standout. King remembers Hild’s family getting all excited and Hild’s daughter kept informing King of where her dad was. King described it as “just marvelous when he crossed the finish line. “It’s a tribute to life, said King. King himself participated in the race in 1984, its second year, becoming the first local ever to finish. He was joined by five others, including Brian Edge, who will be competing with his stepdaughter, Hanna Burton. King finished sixth overall. King said being in a triathlon was one of the reasons he wanted one in Penticton. “I was the one who got the Peach Classic going, he said. “I suggested that we needed to have a triathlon. As the thirtieth race nears, King said he looks forward to seeing the new finishers. “First timers, they get such a thrill out of coming across that line, he said. “I love to see the splits between people. He also talked about seeing Burton perform and Buder, who will compete at age 82. “That says something in itself, he said. “We certainly hope both those athletes will be able to make it to the line on time.

JORDAN RAPP screams with his finger signalling that he is No.1 as he neared the finish line of Subaru Ironman Canada in 2011 as he won the event for the second time. Rapp greeted well wishers who reached out to him near the end. To the right, Rapp is interviewed by the media shortly after his win with wife Jill Savege on hand and their son. Rapp won’t be competing in this year’s event as he recently won a triathlon in New York. He will be at Sunday’s race providing commentary for Shaw TV.
