‘Shocked’ at sex trade in downtown Resident wants more enforcement, police say that’s not the answer

ation is an embarrassment and blight on his beautiful town.

He’s seen the women working right in the middle of the downtown core, on 224th Street and Dewdney Trunk Road, a block away from municipal hall. One woman jumped in his car when he stopped to pick up his girlfriend at a dentist. Their antics have even been documented by residents who’ve posted photographs on Facebook.

“I was shocked and appalled,” said Sinclair.

“The downtown looks so nice.

That’s the last thing I expected to see there.” Previously the “strolls” in Maple Ridge were confined to North Avenue and streets off Lougheed Highway, but have since changed locations to the district’s business hub.

Sex trade workers have taken to soliciting customers near medical offices on Selkirk Avenue, near 223rd Street and outside the Bingoplex.

“It’s one thing if it’s out of the way,” said Sinclair.

“But to have it right in the centre of town. That’s just wrong.”

“We are addressing it,” said BIA chair Phillip Hartwick.

The business improvement association has told Westridge Security, a company that patrols downtown.

“I believe summer time certainly increases the activity but it is not necessarily a new issue. We are aware of the trends and will address the issue for our membership,” Hartwick added.

A promise kept takes former addict across country Joe Roberts pushes shopping cart from Calgary to Vancouver to help keep kids off the streets

oe Roberts is keeping his promise.

More than 20 years ago, when Roberts was a homeless drug addict living in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, he made a promise to himself and to God to give back any way he could should he ever get clean.

Now a successful business executive, he has been making good on that vow. For the past two months, Roberts has been pushing a custom-built shopping cart from Calgary to Vancouver in an effort to help bring an end to youth homelessness.

Called The Push for Change, Roberts’ campaign hopes to raise funds for early intervention projects that aim to mentor at-risk kids attending alternative school programs or living in group and foster homes.

He also hopes fund late intervention programs providing food and shelter for kids already on the streets.

“It can be something as simple as a blanket and a meal,” he says. “It’s about building trust, so when they want to make a change, we can get at them and help them.”

Roberts shared his story at the Salvation Army’s Caring Place Ministry in downtown Maple Ridge Friday morning as he pushed his cart through town. Having lived on the streets himself, Roberts can empathize with many of the shelters residents.

Growing up in Midland, Ontario, Roberts was a good kid, from a good home.

“We weren’t rich, but we weren’t poor,” he says. “It was a typical middle class Canadian home, with a dad that went to work and a mom that stayed at home.”

Life was good, until Roberts’ father died suddenly from a heart attack at age 35. Roberts was just eight years old.

“He was the kind of dad who was always there, he coached the baseball team and the hockey team,” says Roberts. “And at eight, I felt ripped off, because I lost my hero.”

His mother was a housewife with no career or education, and few options to help support the family.

Soon she moved herself and her three children in with a new boyfriend, capable of supporting the family.

Roberts spent much of his late teens and early 20s in a drug-induced haze, in a cardboard box under the Georgia Viaduct.

His life was dictated by where his next fix was coming from, his habit supported by collecting empty aluminum cans for refund.

“The Salvation Army was my safety net,” he says. “There was always a bowl of soup there for me.”

However, unlike many who end

up on the 100-block of East Hastings Street, Roberts was able to escape.

One day in 1991, Roberts dragged himself down to Pigeon Park in the pouring rain to score drugs. Dope sick and soaking wet, he sold his boots, his most prized possessions, for a $10 hit.

“When my feet touched that cold concrete sidewalk, I knew I was done,” he says. “I was broken.”

So Roberts prayed. He asked God to help him get clean, and in return, if he could get to the other side, he promised to give back anyway he could.

With the help of his mother, Roberts entered a residential detox facility in Ontario in July of that year.

After finishing his treatment, Robert went back to school, finishing two college diplomas.

“I noticed two things when I walked in there,” he says of his first day attending college. “The first thing I noticed was that six months ago, they wouldn’t have even let me into this building to use the washroom.

“The second thing I noticed was, wow, there’s a lot of aluminum cans here.”

Roberts soon discovered his survival skills on the streets could also be of use in the business world.

“I discovered I had the for gab, so I was a natural for sales,” he says.

In time, Roberts became CEO of the multimedia development company Mindware Design Communications, where in less than four years, he led the company through an 800 per cent increase in business. He made his first million dollars before he turned 35, and was named one of Maclean’s magazine’s 10 Canadians Who Make a Difference.

“My gifts were hidden from myself,” he says. “In 12 years, I went from pushing a shopping cart to driving a german sports car and wearing a gold watch.”

However, Roberts says he gradually lost sight of what was important. He stopped going to his addiction meetings, and started believing his own hype.

In 2005, after undergoing surgery, Roberts began to abuse his prescription medications, and soon found himself back in full blown addiction.

“It was a shameful thing for me,” he admits. “Everything I accomplished, I thought I had done it all by myself, but I hadn’t. And I hadn’t kept my promise.”

Roberts works as a management consultant and a motivational speaker now, and says he was inspired by Rick Hansen and Terry Fox to take to the streets and start pushing his cart. He came up with the idea with the help of his business partner, Dr. Sean Richardson, a sport psychologist.

Since July 1, Roberts has been pushing the cart 24 km a day, six days a week. The cart, he says, symbolizes the problem of homelessness, while the fact that it is empty represents the hunger many on the streets are faced with.

The cart itself is custom built from aluminum, complete with handbrakes, and was designed by a group of school kids from Pinetree Secondary in Coquitlam.

Thanks to generous support from Telus, Roberts says the campaign costs have been covered completely.

“That means 100 per cent of donations we raise go to kids at risk,” he says. “Their support has been incredible.”

Most mornings, Roberts and his crew are up before the sun, and after breakfast and a few espressos, Roberts is on the road by about 6 a.m. With a goal of 24 km per day, Roberts pushes the cart in four sixkm shifts.

“We’re averaging about 11 minutes a kilometre, which is faster than we’s thought,” he says.

After finishing up between noon and 1 p.m., Roberts spends 15 minutes in an ice bath up to his waist.

More law enforcement has not stemmed the drug supply in Vancouver where teens can score most illegal substances in a matter of 10 minutes, a new study shows.

The study conducted by the B.C. Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS found that heroin, crack, cocaine, crystal meth and marijuana are easily and quickly accessible to users in Vancouver, despite decades of law enforcement aimed at suppressing their supply.

The story’s the same in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. Sgt. Daryl Creighton, who heads Ridge Meadows RCMP drug squad, said teens in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows have easy access to illegal drugs as those in Vancouver.

“It’s true that illegal drugs are accessible in our community, providing you know the right connections,” he added.

“The illegal drug trade is a community problem, not just a policing one.

“Police utilize intervention, prevention, and enforcement regarding the sale and use of drugs.”

Darryl Lucas, of Alouette Addictions, said teens in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows are telling his counsellors that they can get “any drug in minutes.

“Surprisingly, alcohol is tougher to get,” he added.

Lucas believes in the “four-pillars” approach to drug problems that places an equal emphasis on enforcement, treatment, prevention and harm reduction.

“When you concentrate too much money on one prong, the others get left behind,” he said.

“So a multi-pronged approach is the best way to go that includes

Hamzah attended the Vancouver Film School, which is located in the Downtown Eastside and says what he say there inspired him to help Roberts on his journey.

“It always shocked me

how people would walk right past people on the streets,” says Hamzah.

“The kids don’t deserve to be there.”

Cook used to be one of those kids. Like Roberts, Cook was once a homeless drug addict in the Downtown Eastside, where he and Roberts were partners in crime.

The study’s conclusions were “concerning” for Dr. Scott Hadland, MD, lead author of the study and now chief resident in pediatrics at Harvard University-affiliated Children’s Hospital in Boston.

“Young users are incredibly vulnerable to drug use.

The finish line for this leg of Roberts’ journey is familiar ground: the Salvation Army’s Harbour Light shelter in the Downtown Eastside.

Roberts hopes to get there this Saturday.

However, this 1000-km trip is just a training run, he explains. Next year he plans to push the cart coast-to-coast, from St. John’s, Newfoundland, to Vancouver. The trip will likely take him more than a year, and cover more than 7,200 km.

Roberts says he wants to help young people realize the potential they hold inside themselves, so that they might avoid a fate similar to his.

“No one says in high school, I want to be a dope fiend,” he says.

With 65,000 young people homeless in Canada, either on the streets or in shelters, its time for people to Canadians to act.

“If all we do is create awareness then we would have failed as a project,” he says. “Engagement is the key, if we can get enough people wrapped around this and they get their hearts in it we can make a real impact.”

Roberts uses himself as a perfect example that there is no such thing as a lost cause.

“It would have been easy to write me off,” he says. “But I made that transformation. Not everyone will, but everyone is capable of it.”

Tyler Ducharme, who spearheaded the nowdefunct Maple Ridge Coalition of Concerned Citizens, wonders why the district continues to allow Athwal to do business without a licence.

“It’s just a disappointment. If revoking it wasn’t going to work why did we play that charade?”

Councillors say they’ll address the issue in September.

“I certainly will be asking the question,” said Coun. Mike Morden.

Coun. Al Hogarth did not know the status of Athwal’s licence but believes he would require one to do business as a property manager.

“I think it would be something that would be worth following up on,” said Hogarth, a realtor.

Hogarth noted there are other factors that can make it hard for the district to enforce its bylaws. They include the Residential Tenancy Act and rights of property owners.

Few complaints, say RCMP Sex Trade from Front Ridge Meadows RCMP however report there have been few official complaints about prostitution in the downtown core in the past month. “Prostitution is a complex problem, and enforcement isn’t the only solution,” said Insp. Dave Fleugel.

“Police know the sex trade workers are often victims, and would benefit

from assistance in making different life choices,” said Fleugel. “Our detachment continues to partner with local agencies, such as Alouette Addictions and Cythera House to offer the workers a chance to make this life style change, and when we target these crimes … the ‘Johns’ are frequently the ones we place the emphasis on.”

“In our existing bylaw, we don’t deal with individual houses.

“We deal with condo units like Northumberland was – where there were multiple units within one building,” said Holitzki.

She noted the issues around Northumberland Court happened before she started working for the District of Maple Ridge but couldn’t say why Athwal was still allowed to rent multiple units in Gordon Towers without a business licence.

The district is reviewing its bylaws and staff have recommended a change that would require anyone who rents out more than one property to apply for a business licence.

Staff are also compiling a list of owners who operate more than one rental property.

“If that bylaw passes, then we would be looking back at Mr. Athwal again,” Holitzki said.

“I just want to make sure we are not just targeting him.”

Licence from Front Despite having no licence, Athwal is still doing business in the district by renting out multiple properties including houses and apartments. A recent council report pegged the number of rental units he owned at 30.

Athwal also owns six units in Gordon Towers, the building at the centre of the murder plot allegation.

Police allege Athwal counselled one of his tenants to murder a man who managed the high-rise, located on 222nd Street at Dewdney Trunk Road.

Athwal hasn’t yet entered a plea on a charge of counselling to commit murder.

Liz Holitzki, director of bylaws and licensing for Maple Ridge, explained the licence that was revoked in 2009 was “site-specific” and only applied to Northumberland Court.

When asked if Athwal could operate other strata rentals without a licence, Holitzki indicated council would address that after the summer break.

Privatize ICBC T

he B.C. Liberals have mishandled ICBC, and the proof came last week when a review showed the company has been hiring boatloads of senior managers and paying them more each year — with the government apparently oblivious to this fact.

Today, there are 32-per-cent more managers than in 2007, and they are paid (as a group) 70 per cent more than five years ago. Fifty-four of them made more than $200,000 each in 2011.

The Liberals insisted, when they took office in 2001, that ICBC didn’t need to be privatized, nor did there need to be complete competition in the auto insurance sector. They merged ICBC operations with the motor vehicle branch and had ICBC contribute to policing initiatives. This has made it difficult to unwind ICBC, the insurance company, from ICBC, the public policy arm.

They have also insisted, especially in recent years, that dividends from ICBC go back to the shareholder – the government. This means all ICBC customers, are paying additional insurance premiums to boost government revenues. These are not commercial transactions. They are tax grabs, in the guise of insurance premiums.

The government has now, belatedly, said ICBC needs to cut its management costs and manager compensation. This comes just after ICBC has boosted insurance rates by 11 per cent.

The simple fact is this: ICBC is being used by government for all sorts of purposes that are far from its ostensible role as a public car insurance company. This isn’t new — the NDP did this with ICBC back in its earliest days. But it certainly points out the Liberals are just as good as the NDP at mismanaging Crown corporations.

ICBC needs to be privatized. This of course won’t happen under a new NDP government, nor under a re-elected Liberal government. ICBC is a sacred cow.

It’s time to invest in our forests VICTORIA – The B.C. government’s emergency committee on timber supply has produced its report, but it leaves many of the big questions unanswered.

Can the Burns Lake sawmill, destroyed by fire last winter, be given enough timber B.C. Views to rebuild?

It’s likely, committee Tom Fletcher members concluded, if areas that are currently considered “marginally economic” are harvested.

With nearly half the pine in that region dead from beetle infestation, and much of the better timber already cut, that means harvesting from areas that would produce only about two-thirds of the volume that is currently considered economical to log.

Will eight more sawmills have to close once the beetle-killed timber becomes too degraded to cut?

Committee members hold out hope that extending the cut to less-economic timber stands can reduce this impact as well.

But with the current cut far above historic levels to maximize beetle-kill harvest, some industry contraction seems inevitable.

All this depends on adequate forest inventory and investment in replanting, fertilizing and provision of additional roads and power lines that would allow access to timber and potential bioenergy development.

And that is where the political fight lies ahead.

The timber supply committee delivered a unanimous report, despite the harsh divisions between the B.C. Liberal and NDP members who serve on it.

NDP forest critic Norm Macdonald, vice-chair of the committee, agreed it did good work during the seven months it has toured affected areas of the B.C. Interior. But he said the roots of the problem go back a decade, to when the B.C. Liberals started reducing support for forest health just as the beetle epidemic was spreading.

Ten years ago, the government removed the obligation for the province to reforest areas affected by disease and fire. This was not only at the peak of the epidemic, it was one year before devastating wildfires raced through the Interior in the summer of 2003.

“In 2002, the government removed its obligation to replant those areas, and cut the budget by 90 per cent,” Macdonald told me.

“The three-year budget that’s in front of us is keeping on the downward slide, and it’s not what people in communities are saying is the answer. So that has to change.”

The Opposition, the auditor-general and forest experts have been blasting the government for the degraded state of the timber inventory, at a time when environmental changes have been sweeping.

So part of the committee’s proposed solution is to “expedite negotiations” with the Burns Lake First Nations to give them a chance to harvest some of the marginally economic forest areas that remain.

There are numerous reasons for our decision, including First Nations’ opposition, environmental effects, foreign investment, economic results, and more.

First Nations rely on healthy forests, rivers, and oceans for their livelihood and the continuity of their culture.

B.C. First Nations have given Enbridge a clear message: they cannot be bought. They are not willing to subject their natural surroundings to an oil spill.

British Columbians believe that the pipeline steel will eventually corrode and burst open, resulting in a spill somewhere along the 1,170 km of pristine wilderness and 1,000 rivers and streams crossed …

Clean up after trimming lawn EDITOR, THE NEWS:

While out on my Saturday morning jog, I was on the east sidewalk of Kanaka Way and also on the north side of 104th Avenue, both of these areas had some weed cutting done.

Both sidewalks had been left in a mess with the debris spread over many parts of the sidewalks and also on the road against the curb.

I found this disgusting. Do I need to come and show people how to do a proper job?

Step 1: walk the area and pick up any paper, plastic and other garbage so that when mowing or weed whacking, the garbage doesn’t get cut up in smaller pieces and spread around.

Step 2: mow or weed whack.

Step 3: sweep or blow the debris off the sidewalks and streets back on to the mowed area.

Residential road too small for gravel trucks EDITOR, THE NEWS:

We are writing to express our objection to the proposed plan to extract gravel from land that is currently within the Agricultural Land Reserve on 236A Street.

A gravel pit is heavy industry, i.e. heavy equipment – crushers, payloaders, gravel trucks and trailers. With this comes all the accompanying negative aspects – pollution, noise, dust, vibration, all of

which diminish the quality of life for a number of residential neighbourhoods bordering all sides of the proposed site.

Having lived in this neighbourhood for more than 20 years, it is zoned residential.

It is not as though residents of this area moved here knowing they were going to have a gravel pit in their back yard.

We cannot imagine a more

inappropriate use of this land. Perhaps a garbage dump?

Of paramount concern to us, is the issue of safety.

The proposed plan is to use 124th Avenue to connect with 232nd Street and/ or Abernethy Way. But 124th Avenue is a narrow, two-lane road, only one block of which has a sidewalk. Five residential streets merge into 124th Av-

enue, one of which is heavily used by westbound commuters avoiding the traffic light on 232nd Street and Dewdney Trunk Road.

The street is already congested with cars, school children and foot traffic. There is no way this small, country road can accommodate trucks and trailers coming and going from a gravel pit.

I also wonder how many dollars she has lost for the City of Pitt Meadows for having this piece of revenue removed.

It is also sad that a company would remove it after only one complaint.

I’m guessing more people didn’t have an issue with it than those who did.

Now, back to the billboard itself.

It’s so disheartening to hear these awful stories followed by a sucker punch when the cowardly individuals receive their so-called punishments, which are never even close to being enough.

Study shows teens find drugs with ease

Among the 330 youth aged 1426 involved in the study, nearly 63 per cent reported accessing crystal methamphetamine in as little as 10 minutes, compared to 39 per cent of adult users. Young drug users also reported easier access to marijuana, with 88 per cent saying they could obtain the drug within 10 minutes, versus 73 per cent of adults.

“Some would say this is a question we already knew the answer to,” said Dr. Hadland.

“But it is really important from a policy standpoint to have good scientific evidence.

If we are to have any impact or change policy, we need to have carefully conducted research to support our cause.”

The results, published in the American Journal on Addictions, are consistent with other global studies that find a growing worldwide drug

market despite increased enforcement.

To Hadland, the results show that although law enforcement has a role, money would be better spent on public health and drug prevention.

“Much of the emphasis of our funding in Canada has been on law enforcement strategy often to the detriment of evidence-based prevention and treatment approaches that we know can work.”

People east of 240th Street will be in new riding

by R o b e r t M a n g e l s d o r f staff reporter People can have their say in the next few weeks about proposed boundary changes to federal ridings.

The 2012 Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission for B.C. is

holding 20 public hearings across the province in September and October, so people can speak up on the new federal electoral map.

The only local public hearing takes place Thursday, Sept. 20 at 7 p.m. at Maple Ridge council chambers.

Under the proposed changes, the riding of Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge-Mission would drop in size from more than 131,000 in population to close to 97,000.

The new riding boundaries would include all of Pitt Meadows, as well as the majority of Maple Ridge, west of 240th Street and Fern Crescent. The Albion neighbourhood east of 240th Street, as well as Whonnock and Mission, would become part of a new MissionMatsqui riding.

ing downtown Port Coquitlam and Mary Hill would also become part of the new Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge riding. As a result, Port Coquitlam would be split into parts of three separate ridings.

“We had to go across the river, which isn’t ideal,” said B.C. electoral boundaries commission chairman Justice John Hall.

Hall said the goal for B.C. was for federal ridings to be an average of 105,000 in population.

While the new Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge riding will come in well under the provincial average, Hall said he expects that won’t be the case for long.

“It’s not surprising given how the region is growing,” he said.

“All the growth we’re seeing is in the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley.”

Of the six new ridings proposed for B.C., five are in Metro Vancouver and Fraser Valley.

Electoral boundary changes typically occur every 10 years, and this round of changes was enacted last year, after the federal government passed the Fair Representation Act.

The legislation called for an increase in the number of federal ridings to bring the House of Commons closer towards representation by population.

“Canadians living in Ontario, B.C., and Alberta have become significantly underrepresented as their populations have grown,” said Conservative MP Tim Uppal, Minister of State for Democratic Reform, last year.

“The Fair Representation Act delivers on our government’s long-standing commitment and moves every single province towards the principle of representation by population.”

Currently, B.C. federal ridings have an average of more than 114,000 residents.

The fire spread to a fence and shrubs, then grew large enough to scorch siding on three homes. Heat from the flames blew out windows.

Firefighters also put out several spot fires after embers ignited dry grass.

“It was a pretty good sized fire,” added Grootendorst.

“The guys did a really good job of getting it under control.”

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

“There doesn’t appear to be anything suspicious at this time but we were unable to conclusively prove what started the fire,” said Grootendorst.

Animal escapes A burro who went for a wander in Maple Ridge last week has been returned to its owner.

Ridge Meadows RCMP were called last Thursday after the small donkey got loose on 132nd Avenue.

Police said passerbys managed to coax the burro onto a farm property to keep it away from traffic.

Const. Ryan Henley located the burro’s owner the next day.

Police want to thank all residents who assisted in keeping the burro safe, and the family who looked after him for 24 hours.

As he wrangles 40 singers and musicians for his latest production, he admits - he sometimes gets overwhelmed.

Staging a Broadway musical in two weeks is ambitious.

“This is the best cast I’ve ever worked with,” says Beveridge of Odeum Theatre, which opens the outrageous, hilari-

ous, Tony Award-winning comedy at the ACT on Friday.

Monty Python’s Spamalot recounts the legendary tale of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table and their quest for the Holy Grail, featuring a chorus line of dancing divas and knights, flatulent Frenchmen, killer rabbits, and an armless and legless knight.

“I actually find the musical funnier than the movie,” says Beveridge.

“Having the music adds a lot of it, I think it just works really well on stage.”

Beveridge seized the opportunity to stage Spamalot when it opened to amateur release last September. It was his way to “push the boundaries” of amateur theatre locally, challenge aspiring thespians.

“Maple Ridge already has a thriving dance culture, and successful theatre and performing arts community organi-

zations producing outstanding amateur performances, all of whom attract thousands of patrons every year. That’s what I saw when I moved here four years ago. I knew that here, of all places, I could do outstanding things in the arts community,” says Beveridge.

Since Odeum Theatre staged its first production, Beveridge has added an full orchestra to its artistic complement.

“My goal as an educator is, and has always been, to push the degree of excellence and accessibility in the projects I develop, and Maple Ridge became the perfect setting to make my vision a reality,” he says.

Beveridge, along with Odeum’s dance choreographer Kayla Cameron and musical director Clark Schaufele,, have been putting the cast and musicians through rigourous rehearsals which began just two weeks ago.

It’s hard to believe it’s been a decade since Trent and Brett Johnson decided to join forces and follow in the footsteps of their grandpa, uncle and dad.

Even the brothers, who have been on stage since they were kids, appear a tad surprised.

“Country music has changed so much in the past 10 years,” says Brett Johnson, who began playing country bars with his younger brother at age 15.

“It seems every 10 years it changes the way it sounds.”

The grandsons of Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame member Elmer Tippe and nephews to multiaward winner Rick Tippe, the pair have melody in their genes.

By the time, the brothers hit 20, they had played every country bar in the Fraser Valley, creating an energetic and popular live show that features songs by legends like Buck Owens, Merle Haggard and Waylon Jennings as well as contemporary artists like Toby Keith, Brad Paisley and Keith Urban.

As the live scene started to dry up, the Johnson Brothers refocused their creative energy into their first album - Burnin Diesel - which was released last year.

$130-billion oil refinery proposed for Kitimat A Victoria businessman is heading up a proposal to build a $13-billion oil refinery in Kitimat.

David Black, chairman and owner of Black Press, announced Friday he wants to build a world scale oil refinery at Kitimat.

Black told a news conference in Vancouver Friday he is submitting an environmental assessment application to build a “world scale” oil refinery on behalf of Kitimat Clean Ltd., a company owned by Black. The application to the B.C. Environmental Assessment Office is expected this fall.

The proposed refinery would be big enough to process all the diluted bitumen carried by Enbridge’s proposed Northern Gateway pipeline. Black said he has had extensive discussions with Enbridge and other players in the

David Black shows a sample of thick bitumen from the Alberta oil sands. His proposal would keep diluted bitumen from being shipped in bulk from the B.C. coast. industry seven years ago when he was chairman of the B.C. Progress Board.

Black is working with Glenn McGinnis, a consulting engineer and former manager of the Ioco oil refinery in Port Moody.

“We want it [the Kitimat refinery] to be the cleanest and greenest upgrading and refining site in the world,” McGinnis said.

The refinery would produce 240,000 barrels per day of diesel, 100,000 barrels per day of gasoline and 50,000 barrels per day of kerosene or aviation fuel, refined from heavy oil.

Among those attending the news conference was Art Sterritt, executive-director of the Coastal First Nations, a group in the Kitimat area that has strongly opposed the

pipeline proposal. Sterritt disputed Black’s assertion that a B.C. refinery “solves half of the problem” with exported oil by shipping refined gasoline, jet fuel and diesel in tankers instead of heavy crude. Those products have their own risks, Sterritt said.

Black pointed out without marine shipments of those fuels, the coastal communities Sterritt represents would not be able to function.

The lighter fuel products are still an environmental hazard, but they dissipate more quickly and do not persist for many years like heavy crude, he said.

NDP energy critic John Horgan was also skeptical.

“At this point, it’s a proposal without business partners and without First Nations and local community support,” Horgan said.

“It doesn’t change our position [opposing] the Enbridge Northern Gateway project.”

Black said the refinery will mean nearly 6,000 construction jobs over five years and 3,000 permanent jobs.

Black said he will use his own money to finance the proposal through environmental assessment, which he expects to cost several million dollars. After that, he said investors would be needed to complete it, assuming both the refinery and the pipeline get the OK. He has had preliminary meetings with Kitimat and Terrace councils, as well as the Haisla and Kitselas First Nations in the region. The proposed site is a 3,000-hectare Crown industrial property between Terrace and Kitimat.

Kitimat Mayor Joanne Monaghan spoke by phone to the news conference, offering encouragement for the proposal. But Black acknowledged he does not yet have formal support from communities or investors.

“I see myself as a catalyst to make this happen,” said Black, who first proposed the idea to the province and the

Warm weather brings higher risk of West Nile Virus More bugs around when temps. climb Higher temperatures mean more mosquitoes, and the BC Centre for Disease Control is warning that some of them may carry West Nile Virus.

Increasing numbers of mosquitoes have been noticeable in the Okanagan and the Fraser Valley, and people in those regions and elsewhere should take precautions to prevent mosquito bites.

West Nile Virus is transmitted from birds to people through the bite of an infected mosquito. So far this year there have been no positive test results in B.C. from human, animal, or mosquito samples.

However, there have been reports of positive samples in Washington, Oregon, Manitoba and Ontario.

About 20 per cent of people who are bitten by a mosquito and infected with West Nile Virus may develop some symptoms, including fever, fatigue, headaches and swollen lymph glands.

In rare cases (one in 150), the virus can cause severe illness, such as inflammation in or around the brain (encephalitis or meningitis), or polio-like paralysis, that can occasionally result in death.

To reduce the risk of being bitten by mosquitoes: • If possible, avoid being out from dusk to dawn as mosquitoes that carry WNV tend to be active at these times.

• Wear protective clothing, especially outside in the early evening and at dawn. This includes longsleeve shirts or jackets and long pants that mosquitoes cannot bite through. Tuck your pants into socks for

extra protection.

• Avoid dark-coloured clothing as it can attract mosquitoes.

• Use mosquito netting for babies and toddlers in cribs and strollers.

• Use mosquito repellent.

Putting on personal insect repellents that are federally registered, such as those that contain DEET (N,N-Dethyl-m-toluamide) or PMD (lemon-eucalyptus oil) is an effective way to protect yourself from mosquito bites.

• There are also many repellents that have been shown not to protect against mosquito bites, including bug zappers, devices that give off sound waves and Citrosa plants.

The public can help monitor for West Nile Virus by reporting dead corvid birds (crows, ravens, magpies and jays) by using the form at http://westnile.bccdc.org.

• Ice it – keep cold refrigerated foods like luncheon meats, pasta salads or other perishable foods in an insulated cooler packed with lots of ice or several ice packs.

• Cover it – store leftovers in separate, shallow, covered containers in the refrigerator and eat within two days.

Be careful when eating shellfish, many ways of making you ill Oysters, clams, muscles carry risk, sometimes cooking doesn’t cure all The BC Centre for Disease Control is reminding the public there’s a risk of illness associated with eating raw or undercooked shellfish such as oysters, clams, mussels, scallops, and cockles.

Shellfish may accumulate bacteria, viruses (norovirus, hepatitis A), and toxins (paralytic shellfish poisoning, diarrhetic shellfish poisoning) or other impurities present in the water.

While thorough cooking destroys bacteria and viruses, it does not destroy toxins.

So far this year, five cases of locally-acquired Vibrio parahaemolyticus infection have been reported.

In 2011, 42 cases of vibrio were reported.

These illnesses have been linked to raw shellfish served in restaurants, bought at retail, or self-harvested throughout B.C. including, Gibsons, Sechelt, Powell River, Ladysmith, Qualicum, Ucluelet, Gabriola Island, Cortes Island and Parksville.

In addition to individual cases, B.C. has also experienced outbreaks associated with shellfish.

In 2010, an outbreak of norovirus from raw oysters affected over 30 people and in 2011 more than 60 people became ill after consuming cooked mussels contaminated with diarrhetic shellfish poisoning.

Safety tips to reduce the risk of all shellfishrelated illness: • The Centre for Disease Control recommends buying shellfish only from approved sources.

• All bivalve shellfish sold in B.C. must come from a federally approved source, and outlets and restaurants selling them must be able to provide a shellfish shipper’s tag, which ensures federal inspection.

• Consume only cooked shellfish. Cooking will destroy viruses and bacteria and decrease the risk of gastrointestinal illness.

• When cooking shellfish at home, ensure shellfish are kept in a cold environment at all times, use drinking-quality water to rinse ready-to-eat shellfish, and ensure adequate cook-

ing time. Test oysters with a meat thermometer and make sure the temperature reaches 90C (195F) for 90 seconds. This will kill the vibrio bacteria and minimize the risk of other infections.

• Do not cross-contaminate when handling raw and cooked seafood. Prevent cross-contamination by storing raw and cooked seafood separately, cleaning and sanitizing knives and cutting boards and working with clean hands.

• Obey posted warnings and bans when self harvesting shellfish. To check if a shellfish area is open for harvesting call the Department of Fisheries and Oceans tollfree at 1-866-431-3474.

• Anyone becoming ill with diarrhea and vomiting after eating shellfish should report their illness to their public health office or primary care provider and see a physician if symptoms persist or become severe.

‘Find Your Grail’ in Maple Ridge Odeum Theatre stages Monty Python’s Spamalot at the ACT

As he wrangles 40 singers and musicians for his latest production, he admits - he sometimes gets overwhelmed.

Staging a Broadway musical in two weeks is ambitious.

“This is the best cast I’ve ever worked with,” says Beveridge of Odeum Theatre, which opens the outrageous, hilari-

ous, Tony Award-winning comedy at the ACT on Friday.

Monty Python’s Spamalot recounts the legendary tale of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table and their quest for the Holy Grail, featuring a chorus line of dancing divas and knights, flatulent Frenchmen, killer rabbits, and an armless and legless knight.

“I actually find the musical funnier than the movie,” says Beveridge.

“Having the music adds a lot of it, I think it just works really well on stage.”

Beveridge seized the opportunity to stage Spamalot when it opened to amateur release last September. It was his way to “push the boundaries” of amateur theatre locally, challenge aspiring thespians.

“Maple Ridge already has a thriving dance culture, and successful theatre and performing arts community organi-

zations producing outstanding amateur performances, all of whom attract thousands of patrons every year. That’s what I saw when I moved here four years ago. I knew that here, of all places, I could do outstanding things in the arts community,” says Beveridge.

Since Odeum Theatre staged its first production, Beveridge has added an full orchestra to its artistic complement.

“My goal as an educator is, and has always been, to push the degree of excellence and accessibility in the projects I develop, and Maple Ridge became the perfect setting to make my vision a reality,” he says.

Beveridge, along with Odeum’s dance choreographer Kayla Cameron and musical director Clark Schaufele,, have been putting the cast and musicians through rigourous rehearsals which began just two weeks ago.

It’s hard to believe it’s been a decade since Trent and Brett Johnson decided to join forces and follow in the footsteps of their grandpa, uncle and dad.

Even the brothers, who have been on stage since they were kids, appear a tad surprised.

“Country music has changed so much in the past 10 years,” says Brett Johnson, who began playing country bars with his younger brother at age 15.

“It seems every 10 years it changes the way it sounds.”

The grandsons of Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame member Elmer Tippe and nephews to multiaward winner Rick Tippe, the pair have melody in their genes.

By the time, the brothers hit 20, they had played every country bar in the Fraser Valley, creating an energetic and popular live show that features songs by legends like Buck Owens, Merle Haggard and Waylon Jennings as well as contemporary artists like Toby Keith, Brad Paisley and Keith Urban.

As the live scene started to dry up, the Johnson Brothers refocused their creative energy into their first album - Burnin Diesel - which was released last year.

The 2012 Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission for B.C. is

holding 20 public hearings across the province in September and October, so people can speak up on the new federal electoral map.

The only local public hearing takes place Thursday, Sept. 20 at 7 p.m. at Maple Ridge council chambers.

Under the proposed changes, the riding of Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge-Mission would drop in size from more than 131,000 in population to close to 97,000.

The new riding boundaries would include all of Pitt Meadows, as well as the majority of Maple Ridge, west of 240th Street and Fern Crescent. The Albion neighbourhood east of 240th Street, as well as Whonnock and Mission, would become part of a new MissionMatsqui riding.

ing downtown Port Coquitlam and Mary Hill would also become part of the new Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge riding. As a result, Port Coquitlam would be split into parts of three separate ridings.

“We had to go across the river, which isn’t ideal,” said B.C. electoral boundaries commission chairman Justice John Hall.

Hall said the goal for B.C. was for federal ridings to be an average of 105,000 in population.

While the new Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge riding will come in well under the provincial average, Hall said he expects that won’t be the case for long.

“It’s not surprising given how the region is growing,” he said.

“All the growth we’re seeing is in the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley.”

Of the six new ridings proposed for B.C., five are in Metro Vancouver and Fraser Valley.

Electoral boundary changes typically occur every 10 years, and this round of changes was enacted last year, after the federal government passed the Fair Representation Act.

The legislation called for an increase in the number of federal ridings to bring the House of Commons closer towards representation by population.

“Canadians living in Ontario, B.C., and Alberta have become significantly underrepresented as their populations have grown,” said Conservative MP Tim Uppal, Minister of State for Democratic Reform, last year.

“The Fair Representation Act delivers on our government’s long-standing commitment and moves every single province towards the principle of representation by population.”

Currently, B.C. federal ridings have an average of more than 114,000 residents.

“The fire had already grown by the time they got to it,” said Grootendorst.

The fire spread to a fence and shrubs, then grew large enough to scorch siding on three homes. Heat from the flames blew out windows.

Firefighters also put out several spot fires after embers ignited dry grass.

“It was a pretty good sized fire,” added Grootendorst.

“The guys did a really good job of getting it under control.”

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

“There doesn’t appear to be anything suspicious at this time but we were unable to conclusively prove what started the fire,” said Grootendorst.

Animal escapes A burro who went for a wander in Maple Ridge last week has been returned to its owner.

Ridge Meadows RCMP were called last Thursday after the small donkey got loose on 132nd Avenue.

Police said passerbys managed to coax the burro onto a farm property to keep it away from traffic.

Const. Ryan Henley located the burro’s owner the next day.

Police want to thank all residents who assisted in keeping the burro safe, and the family who looked after him for 24 hours.

Crowded crease at camp creates coach’s conundrum Ridge Meadow Flames looking to future as veterans battle for spot

by T i m Fi t z g e r a l d contributor For Ridge Meadows Flames coach and general manager Jamie Fiset the math is simple. Three players vying for two positions means one is on the block.

If only the decision were that easy.

Fiset is coming off a pair of games last weekend against the Mission City Outlaws and the Flames still have to decide who stays and who goes.

The Flames have both goalies from last season in camp, 20-year-old Wes McLeod and 19-year-old Jordan Hospes. Added to the mix is 17-year-old R.J. Bruni, who is currently in Chilliwack on a try-out with the Chiefs of the BCHL. Should Bruni fail to crack the roster and find himself back with the Flames, Fiset said he is going to move one of his veterans.

“The interesting thing with veteran goalies is that we only play a 44-game schedule, and to be fair to them, they need to play at this age, not sit on the bench,” noted Fiset.

“Both of our guys are capable of being starters in this league and to do a 50/50 split wouldn’t be fair to either.”

With eight 20-year-olds returning to the Flames roster for the 2012/13 season, Fiset said he has been up front with all his players that roster moves will inevitably come before the start of the season. He said the team has to think beyond what’s best for the immediate future.

“That’s too big a gap to try to fill in one year. That’s the unfortunate nature of the business.”

So while he knows one of his veterans will be on the move, it comes down to a decision on which tandem the Flames’ coaching staff feels most comfortable with.

Fiset said both McLeod and Hospes are having strong camps, making his decision all that more difficult. McLeod played in 27 games last season for the Flames, with a record of seven wins and 16 losses. He recorded one shutout with a 3.63 goals against

Hospes started last season with the Abbotsford Pilots, where he was 5-1, with a 2.31 GAA and .913 SV%. In his 11 games with the Flames, his recorded dipped to 2-7 with a 4.93 GAA and .892 SV% McLeod was the Flames starter as the team pushed the Aldergrove Kodiaks to six games in their opening round playoff exit.

Shin bows out in U.S. Amateur golf contributed

Maple Ridge’s Justin Shin bid at the 112th U.S. Amateur Championships came up short after the B.C. golfer bowed out in the round of 32.

Edouard Espana of France beat Shin 1 up to knock the New Mexico State senior golfer packing during the match play event at the at the Cherry Hills Country Club in Cherry Hills Village, Colorado.

Espana jumped out an early lead with a birdie on the 349-yard par 4 first hole.

Shin drew the match back

to even with an eagle on the 546-yard fifth hole. It would be a similar theme for the round, as Shin was either tied or trailed throughout the match.

Shin, who won 16 tournaments while he was a high school student at Thomas Haney Secondary in Maple Ridge, played his way into the round of 32 with a dramatic 1 up win over Brad Valois of Warwick, Rhode Island.

Shin’s pared the final hole to beat Valois, who bogeyed after leading for the previous 10 holes. However, there would be no dramatic come-from-behind wins over the French amateur.

Espana built his biggest lead in the match when Shin carded a bogey on the monstrous 605-yard par 5 No. 11 and a double-bogey on the par-3 No. 12.

However, Shin rallied to square the match winning both holes No. 13 and 14.

The contest remained even until Espana birdied the 545-yard par 5 no. 17. Shin, who had seven top-five finishes in his junior year at New Mexico Justin Shin State, was unable to send the match to extra holes as both recorded pars on tricky par 4 finishing hole.

The loss meant Toronto’s Albin Choi was the only Canadian left in the tournament.

Fiset said despite McLeod’s strong play in last year’s post-season, the slate is clean for both goalies to grab the Flames roster spot as the returning veteran goalie.

The team’s other concern with moving one of the two veterans is that they return to haunt their former team. Knowing a team has a glut at a certain position can hamper a general manager’s return come trade time.

Weaver, a junior at the University of California. Choi was 2-up heading to the 17th hole when the wheels fell off. Weaver gained points on the final two holes to square the match, forcing extra holes.

Weaver finished the comeback with a birdie on the first extra hole.

Weaver would experience his own heartbreak in extra holes when Steven Fox, of Hendersonville, Tenn., made an 18-foot birdie putt on the 37th hole to capture the championship at the par-71, 7,409-yard course.

Weaver lead or was tied for most of the scheduled 36-hole final before Fox snuck back into contention.

Weaver never trailed the match after the fifth hole, only to see the crafty Fox square the match on the final hole.

However, Fiset is confident either goalie will bring a fair return.

“As long as more than one team needs a goalie, that’s what will determine the price.”

Also confusing the situation was Friday’s split-squad games against the Mission City Outlaws.

With the win, Fox earned an exemption to next year’s U.S. Open and British Open, as well as a likely invitation to the 2013 Masters.

• B.C. 2012 Girls’ and Boys Juvenile Championships The door is pen for Maple Ridge’s Keanna Mason at the British Columbia Golf’s 2012 Juvenile Girls’ Championship.

The the three-round event will be played at the par-73 5,643 yard Princeton Golf Club and conclude August 23.

For Mason, the opportunity to claim top prize becomes more wide-open as defending champion will not be on hand.

Maple Ridge’s Mason is considered one of the province’s brightest stars, whose resume includes a second-place finish at last year’s juvenile girls’ tournament, to go a long with winning the 2010 B.C. Bantam Girls’ Championship.

Other notable finishes in-

clude a sixth place finish at the CN Future Links Pacific Championship as well as playing in the CN Canadian Women’s Tour event at Richmond Country Club in May. Mason will be tested on the links by rivals Michelle Kim of Surrey, Naomi Ko of Victoria and Janet Zhang of Richmond. Other notables for contention include Coquitlam’s Ally Shin, Vernon’s Mackenzie Barrie and Halfmoon Bay’s Avery Struck.

On the other side, Maple Ridge’s Connor Gunnell will tackle the par-72 6,506 yard course for the Boys’ Championship.

Gunnell will be looking to upend defending champion Trevor Yu of Vancouver.

Yu recently captured the Canadian Juvenile Boys’ Championship while 2012 CN Future Links Pacific champ Zach Anderson of Nanaimo also joins the field of contenders.

Defensive lapses cost Flames Crowded from p24 Fiset said he had two different defensive efforts during the team’s games.

“I think they have been a little over confident going into the first game,” he said. “Ironically, I thought the first team we put out there was a little more balanced.”

Whether it was early season jitters or over confidence, the Flames fell 7-5 to the Outlaws in Mission.

“Whenever you score five goals, you should win,” said Fiset.

Fiset did not put the blame on either of his goalies for the game.

He said weak defensive play and turnovers exposed some glaring holes in some of the younger players on the roster. Hospes gave up three goals in the loss, while camp invite Dustin Pruss allowed four.

Offensively, veterans Marco Ballarin and Dean Gilmore notched a goal for the Flames, while newly signed Chris Nakamura also chipped in with a tally.

The Flames showed much better resolve in the second game of night, out shooting Mission 38-16 to win 5-1, despite the fact the Flames only dressed five defenceman and

Charlotte was the first of three daughters born to John and Caroline Thomson on the homestead, near Carruthers, Saskatchewan, February 8, 1915. Charlotte was predeceased by our darling Daddy, Lenard, in February, 1970.
