Substance abuse was a factor in an Abbotsford man’s decision to access child pornography, his defence lawyer said during a sentencing hearing on Friday in B.C. Supreme Court in New Westminster.

Everett (Chipper) Block was handed an 18-month jail term and two years’ probation by Justice Austin Cullen for four charges – importing or distributing child porn, making child porn, and two counts of possessing child porn. Defence lawyer Brian Coleman had sought the mandatory minimum sentence of one

year, and referenced a psychologist’s report that said Block’s offences were “related to the use of cocaine, and one thing led to another.” Coleman said Block, who had been out on bail since charges were laid in 2009 and was Continued on A5

The 46-year-old man – who was driving a Ford F-450 pickup with a utility trailer – and his 31year-old female passenger were involved in the collision with a Toyota Venza at about 4:40 p.m. The crash occurred in the westbound lanes of the freeway at Peardonville Road, and sent both vehicles to the side of the road. The driver of the Toyota and the passenger of the truck were taken to hospital by air ambulance, while crews worked on freeing the driver of the F-450, which had landed on its roof. 1,000-kilometre trek

Joe Roberts brought The Push for Change to Abbotsford yesterday to raise awareness and funds for at-risk kids in Canada. Roberts, a former homeless kid and addict who is now a successful author, trainer and motivational speaker, has been pushing a modified shopping cart from Calgary since July 1. He ends his 1,000-kilometre trip this Saturday at the Salvation Army’s Harbour Light Shelter in Vancouver. Roberts stopped in Abbotsford at the Salvation Army’s Cascade Community Church on DeLair Road, and heads to the Gateway of Hope in Langley today (Tuesday). He was in Mission on Friday. In Abbotsford a large crowd of supporters greeted Roberts as he shared his story. Roberts, 45, has said the shopping cart is “a symbol of hope and courage for the young people who are often left out in our society, in our communities, and in our school

Police want ID of bait car video thief Man caught on film while stealing electronics Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News

The Abbotsford Police Department (APD) is asking for the public’s help in identifying a man who stole electronics from a bait car on July 27. Const. Ian MacDonald said a man entered the unlocked vehicle, which was set up on Marshall Road, just after midnight. He rooted through the car and took a set of headphones, an iPod, a GPS and a cellphone. MacDonald said the APD has “several” bait cars in the community at any given time. “We try to change things up ... We use different vehicles and present them in different ways. Some are locked; some are unlocked. Some have items prominently displayed; others have them more hidden.” MacDonald said the vehicle used in the latest incident was left unlocked because that was the scenario occurring in Abbotsford at the time. The APD previ-

ously issued reminders for residents to lock their cars after an increase in the number of thefts from unlocked vehicles. Bait cars in the Lower Mainland are operated by the Integrated Municipal Provincial Auto Crime Team (IMPACT) in partnership with individual police agencies. They are used by police to capture thieves stealing the vehicle or items within the car. If the vehicle itself is stolen, the location, speed and direction of travel is monitored by police dispatchers at E-Comm through GPS tracking. Everything that happens inside the vehicle is caught on audio and video. The dispatcher co-ordinates police response and, once officers are in position behind the bait car, the engine will be disabled at the click of a mouse button. Block, 48, has also undergone counselling to deal with his issues, and the reports say he is at a low risk to re-offend, Coleman said. “He feels confident that he is completely rehabilitated,” he said, adding that Block had agreed to participate in any further counselling that was ordered. Crown prosecutor Sylvia Domaradzki recommended a term of three to four years, saying that child pornography “depends on a simple equation of supply and demand,” and viewing or sharing such material perpetuates the sexual abuse and exploitation of children.

Domaradzki cited a portion of the psychological assessment that suggested Block has a lack of insight and remorse about his offences. She said a longer sentence was needed to adequately address the issues of denunciation and deterrence. Block, a former realtor, went to trial on seven charges and was convicted in May of four of them. He was arrested after a police officer in Australia posed online as a person interested in child porn. Block sent the officer two photos of naked children and a short video of a girl performing a sexual act on a man. The exchanges were traced to Block’s home in Abbotsford, and Canadian authorities were notified. Abbotsford Police went to the residence on April 24, 2008, but only drove onto the property and left.

They later found out that their brief appearance had been captured on Block’s home surveillance video camera. They returned with a search warrant the following day and found four computers, all missing their hard drives, which were never located. A fifth older-model computer was found in another area of the home and, of the 12,000 images stored on it, an investigator recovered 219. About 40 of those were found to constitute child porn, while about another 30 were considered child erotica. Also discovered were online chat sessions that Block had with other people in which their “role playing” involved explicit descriptions of sexual acts being performed with characters as young as nine. The offences occurred between 2003 and 2008.

A body found last Monday in the Fraser River has still not been identified, but the coroner’s service has ruled out foul play. Const. Ian MacDonald said the man’s body was found Aug. 13 by workers on gravel barges for Mainland Sand and Gravel, located at 6850 Cox Rd. along the shoreline of the river east of Matsqui Trail Regional Park in Abbotsford. The body was wedged between a barge and a log, MacDonald said. Police arrived on the scene at about 9:10 p.m. As of yesterday, the man’s identity had not

been established, but could possibly be one of the people who have been reported missing in recent boating accidents. On July 28, a 67-year-old Hope fisherman slipped off a rock near the Saddle Rock Tunnel in the Fraser Canyon and fell into the river. He was not wearing a floatation device. On Saturday, Aug. 11, a 49-year-old man went missing after the boat he was in with two others began taking on water and started sinking in the Fraser River near the Agassiz-Rosedale Bridge. Two of the occupants were able to swim to shore, but the man couldn’t make it through the strong current.

Jamie Bacon has pleaded not guilty to charges he faces re g a rd i n g the so-called Surrey Six killings. Bacon appeared in B.C. Supreme Court in Vancouver Wednesday and pleaded not guilty to murder and conspiracy in the death of Corey Lal, one of six people killed at the Balmoral Towers apartment complex in Whalley on Oct. 19, 2007.

Charged separately in relation to the same incident are Cody Rae Haevischer, Matthew James Johnston and Quang Vinh Thang (Michael) Le. Bacon’s case was severed from the others earlier this month. Police believe four of the victims in the Surrey Six case were gang-related. Two others, 22-yearold Christopher Mohan, a neighbour, and 55-year-old Ed Schellenbergof

For many, standing on the roof of a 20-storey building in Downtown Vancouver, looking at the sidewalk below, would be an unsettling experience. Dangling from that roof by a rope could be considered crazy. But for Abbotsford’s Clayton Ingle, it’s becoming a tradition. For the fifth year in a row, Ingle will take part in the Easter Seals Drop Zone, taking place Sept. 11 at 999 West Hastings in Vancouver. The fundraising event helps send children with special needs to an Easter Seals camp. Participants meet on the roof of the building and rappel down 20 storeys. However, in order to take part, each participant has to raise a minimum of $1,000. Ingle is the only person in B.C. to take part in the event for five consecutive years and has raised more than $10,000 in that time. “I would really like to break my record year last year, when I raised just shy of $3,700,” he said. “I’m asking my hometown of Abbotsford to help me out and sponsor me and at the same time help a kid with

ICBC mishandled The BC Liberals have completely mishandled ICBC, and the proof came last week, when a review showed that the company has been hiring boatloads of senior managers and paying them more each year — with the government apparently oblivious. There are 32 per cent more managers than in 2007, and they are paid (as a group) 70 per cent more than managers received in 2007. Fifty-four of them made more than $200,000 each in 2011. The Liberals insisted, on taking ofﬁce in 2001, that ICBC didn’t need to be privatized, nor did there need to be complete competition in the auto insurance sector. They have also insisted, especially in recent years, that substantial dividends from ICBC go back to the shareholder — the government. This means that all ICBC customers, and that’s everyone who owns a vehicle, are paying additional insurance

premiums to boost government revenues. It’s a tax grab, hidden in the guise of insurance costs. The government has now, very belatedly, said ICBC meeds to cut its management costs and manager compensation. This comes just after ICBC has boosted insurance rates by 11.2 per cent. The simple fact is this: ICBC is being used by government for all sorts of purposes that are far aﬁeld from its ostensible role as a public car insurance company. This isn’t new — the NDP did this with ICBC back in its earliest days. But it certainly points out that the Liberals are just as good as the NDP at mismanaging Crown corporations and sticking taxpayers with extra costs. ICBC needs to be privatized. There is no real need to have government operate a car insurance company that forces all drivers to buy at least basic car insurance. – Black Press

Other Hand If there is one thing I can almost always count on, it is that no matter how productive fishing can be in any lake, they never bite when I hit the water. Since planning a trip into the wilds with someone else usually requires a mutually convenient time, the weekend is selected weeks in advance. How was I to know this one would be a record-breaker for heat in the southern Interior? So due to the rather warm temperatures, I selected a high elevation lake as the only possibility for a fish or two. At one of the highest points on the Coquihalla, we headed north to a little puddle, known for its “great” fishing, at about 4,500 feet. It was killer hot on the drive up but by the time we set up camp, the evening had cooled down to about 10 C. Since we’d spent most of the day driving and setting up, we forsook a campfire, and just before hitting the sack, met the “host’

of the lake’s Forest Service rec site. First time I’ve ever been to a backcountry location, and been supplied with a “host.” I wondered if he’d invite us over for cocktails later, but other than a “hi, how are ya” introduction, that was it. He wandered off to his trailer parked about a hundred yards from us. Next day the sun was scorching, hitting at least 36 by noon. The fish stayed down where it was cool and passed up any and all offerings of snacky things at the end of a fly line. Fortunately, bored son-in-law was kept occupied by constantly bailing the boat, which unbeknownst to me had a smallish leak that appeared in the bow right between his feet. His first reaction on noticing the dampness was “what’s this?” Obviously a leak, I unconcernedly remarked. Bail! Bailer acquired, and activated, we continued our troll of the lake, occasionally warding off the relentless sun by placing cold beer cans against the back of our necks. After a few hours in the heat, and the beer exhausted, it was time to relieve son-in-law’s bailing arm. Perhaps the fishing would improve in the evening. It didn’t.

As night was about to fall, I broke out the gas barbecue, taken along in case a campﬁre ban might be invoked, to grill up some steaks. The barbie was uncooperative, so out came the chain saw, son-inlaw’s bailer arm got a little more workout hauling logs and before long we had a

Apparently the ban had been imposed at noon the day we arrived at the site, yet the host never informed us of same when he first met us, and the sound of a chainsaw wailing didn’t clue him into the fact we were unaware a ban was in effect. We received a warning, were told of the dire consequences of our act, including the possibility of substantial fines. We were appropriately contrite, promised that in future we would bring along TVs and radios (leaving unsaid admonishments that he could have told us when we arrived that a fire ban was in effect). Eventually, the host left us on a happy note, it was time for us to head home, and near Hope the weather cooled enough to cut the air conditioning. The fish will be there for a more seasonable weather trip, and the boat leak will be eliminated with about 10 minutes of caulking time. markrushton@abbynews.com

Cannons need to be dealt with

If you aren’t yet affected by propane cannons in the blueberry fields, be thankful. Some people may live within earshot of a distant propane cannon and they think, “It’s not that bad.” If that faint boom you hear from over the hill every 15 minutes “isn’t that bad,” can you imagine a point where it would become “that bad”? What would it take? How about that same faint boom 100 times louder? How about a noise

like a shotgun blast in a field next to your house, every five minutes, all day long? How about three or more triple-shot cannons operating in the same nearby field, all set on automatic timers, each one detonating three blasts at different five-minute intervals from 6:30 in the morning until 8 at night? Think it will be “not that bad” then? Think again! This is a very real possibility and it’s happening all across the Fraser Valley. There is nothing in

the law that can stop anyone from doing this as long as it’s in the name of agriculture. Don’t believe that people won’t do the absurd, because they will. And don’t think that municipal noise bylaws, our so-called “Good Neighbour Bylaw” or the police will protect you, because they won’t. Besides causing an immediate hardship to their neighbours with their extremely loud blasts, inconsiderate blueberry growers operating cannons will cause their

neighbours’ property values to decline. How’s that for a good neighbour? Makes you want to go and give him a big friendly hug, doesn’t it? If a cannon begins firing near your home, you are out of luck. Once you realize that it is “very bad” it will be too late. Don’t wait until cannons move into your area. They have to be dealt with NOW! Until propane cannons are banned, there are no guarantees that what happened in our neighborhood won’t happen in yours.

Re: New tactics explored to unclog hospitals The one that will help unclog the ER would be if there were nurses that could go out to the elderly people and let the caregivers know if they have to bring them to the ER. I look after my husband and I have brought him to the ER quite a few times because I did not know if I should be worried or not. I always call the 311 or emergency before I take him in and they have always said to bring him in. Sometimes it was for nothing and I feel so guilty as I know how busy they are there. If you could call a nurse or someone with knowledge that could come out and

tell you if you should or not take them in then that would help not clog up the ER, and the caregiver would be put at ease, as I don’t know when

it is dangerous or not, so I bring him in. The doctors and nurses are so great at the hospital, and we are so lucky that

they have chosen to go into the profession of helping people. They are angels sent from God.

letters Area great for industrial park I am a resident living on Baynes Street, in the proposed “East Gloucester” area. We have lived here for about 11 years. I recently attended the meeting at the Bradner Hall regarding the drainage tax and the proposed industrial plan for Gloucester East. I was shocked with the language that was used by some of the people there. I think we can get our point across without all the profanity and name-calling. People seem to think that we are getting rich

off our property, but I can assure you that is not the case. I am offended at being called “money hungry, greedy, or one of those people,” and that we’re being offered the “moon and stars” from the developer. We have not received any monies from the developer, contrary to what people are saying. I would also like to point out that this is not viable farmland. I applaud Patrick Selinger for speaking out at the Bradner Hall meeting. He is totally right about the poor

soil conditions. I know that others wanted to speak for the Gloucester East properties, but were too intimidated by the hostile environment, including myself. People seem to have a mob mentality at these meetings and won’t let you speak. I hope the mayor, councillors and the Agricultural Land Commission give everyone a fair hearing and not let the people from outside the Bradner Area bully their influence on them. When you look at

the big picture, you’re talking about two per cent of the Bradner area for industrial. This area would be great for a community friendly industrial park. It was said at the meeting that Abbotsford would go from collecting $70,000 to $11 million in taxes each year. That would pay for your drainage tax! time at Mill Lake. Personally, I love the look of the lilies blooming in the spring, and the pads hugging the corners of our lake until late summer. Yet this boon of colour and added nuance has been seen as a negative by certain readers of

The News. I am not sure how or why. In a previous letter Reynold Nugter had expressed issues that the lily pads “cannot be good for the health of water quality, and the fish in it,” as a reason to get rid of these aquatic plants.

After contacting multiple local nurseries as well as the company that restocks the lake with fish, there seems to be no logical grounds to this statement. Former Abbotsford MP Randy White has a formal role with the resurgent B.C. Conservative Party. Last week, Conservative leader John Cummins announced several senior appointments to his election team. Named as co-chairs of a newly-created issues management committee are White and Brian Peckford, the former premier of Newfoundland and Labrador. White first won election to the House of Commons as a Reform Party candidate in 1993, representing Langley and Abbotsford, and he was re-elected in 1997, 2000 and

2004. He was caucus chairman and House leader. He wrote the legislation for the National Sex Offender Registry and the National Victims Bill of Rights. White and Peckford both are retired and live on Vancouver Island. “I am thrilled that Randy and Brian – who between them held senior public office for 30 years – have agreed to play important roles on our campaign team,” said Cummins. Stabbed in Whistler

Whistler RCMP are trying to track down a suspect who stabbed a 30-year-old Abbotsford man during a fight outside a nightclub Wednesday night. Sgt. Rob Knapton said patrons were leaving the Max Fish at about 2 a.m. when an altercation occurred. The suspect pulled out a knife, stabbed the victim in the stomach and fled. The victim was taken to the Whistler Medical Clinic for treatment and released. Knapton said it is believed the suspect was with three other people and is described as being in his 20s, about 5’ 8” and stocky with short blonde hair and tattoos on both shoulders. School request denied Kevin MILLS Abbotsford News

A new private Khalsa school will not be established on the site of the old Simpson Elementary. Abbotsford council denied a request for rezoning of the property, located at 30691 Simpson Rd., which would have become a 200-student facility. Joe Chahal, a representative from the Khalsa School, said the location made perfect sense, having formerly been used in a similar fashion. He told council the land and building had served as an elementary and later a middle school for close to six decades. “The existing buildings have undergone significant upgrades by the current owners. The building is ideal for the use as an elementary school,” said Chahal. When the school closed, the property was purchased by the Metis Provincial Council of BC, which used the facility as a trade school. Last year, the property went up for sale. It has been on the market for eight months and Chahal said the Khalsa School has made the only offer. Despite his arguments, some council members were concerned about placing a school in what they called a busy

A new private Khalsa school will not be allowed to move into the old Simpson Elementary site, currently owned by the Metis Council of BC. industrial area. Abbotsford Mayor Bruce Banman said he isn’t against the idea of a new private school, saying there is a need for one. “It really boils down to great idea, just wrong place. Industrial lands are very, very tight and very precious,” he said. He’s not comfortable placing children in an industrial area, but said the city would love to see the group set up the school at an alternative location. “This was not a case of we don’t want them.” But other councillors felt the old school was a logical choice. “I had some sympathy for the applicants. Local stakeholders downplayed a Vancouver newspaper report that Vancouver Canucks owner Francesco Aquilini is interested in buying the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre and stationing the Canucks’ AHL affiliate there. Abbotsford city manager Frank Pizzuto said he is not aware of any dealings between Aquilini and the city. He noted the rumour has come up before, but said no talks have taken place. “It’s not on the market,” he said, referring to the AESC. “I don’t know where that comes from.” Lane Sweeting, a member of the local group which operates the AHL’s Abbotsford Heat, echoed Pizzuto’s statement. “The first I heard about it is when I read the report,” Sweeting said. “If they are sniffing around, I guess they would go to the

city first.” The Canucks responded to queries from The News by issuing a statement via email. “Canucks Sports & Entertainment maintains a strong, ongoing relationship with their AHL affiliate the Chicago Wolves,” the statement read. “The club will not address speculative reports or discuss the partnerships of other NHL teams.” Fueling the Aquilini speculation is the notion that a Canucks farm team in Abbotsford would make sense on a number of levels. A local AHL affiliate would further strengthen the Canucks’ alreadystrong brand, while facilitating greater convenience for the team in terms of player recalls and prospect development. Cascades hoopsters sweep NCAA foes

The University of the Fraser Valley women’s basketball team began the preseason in spectacular fashion, sweeping a pair of games against NCAA opponents last week. On Monday, the Cascades staged a fourth-quarter rally to top the Ball State Cardinals 60-57. Then on Tuesday evening, they raced out to a huge lead against the Schreiner University Mountaineers en route to a 76-47 blowout win.

Ball State is an NCAA Div. I program, while Schreiner plays at the Div. III level. The victories marked the first time the Cascades women had swept a twogame series against NCAA teams, and the Ball State win was their first against a Div. 1 squad in five years. The Cardinals opened up a six-point lead midway through the fourth quarter on Monday, but UFV went on a 12-3 run to end the game. UFV centre Sarah Wierks

scored a game-high 15 points, while Nicole Wierks and Courtney Bartel posted 12 points each. Brandy Woody and Jasmin Hitchens, with 14 points apiece, were the top scorers for Ball State. Yard Dogs miss playoffs From A19

Bruno, a town of 450 people located 90 kilometres east of Saskatoon, won the Western men’s title three years in a row (2007 to ’09), but lost in the final each of the last two years. “It was tough,” acknowledged Merchants coach Ray Bender. “We rebuilt again, brought a few new guys in, and just kept plugging away.” Bender called his star pitcher Sparvier “a real workhorse.” “He pitched 12 innings today,” Bender marveled. “We couldn’t ask for better.” Like the Bruno men, the Carnduff women have been a fixture at Westerns in recent years. But while the Merchants were crafting a dynasty, the Steelers had gone a decade since their lone Western title in 2002. They celebrated that anniversary in thrilling fashion, edging the North Delta Sunfire 2-1 in the final. Carnduff scratched out a pair of early runs, and pitcher Aimee Unchulenko kept North Delta off the scoreboard through six innings. The Sunfire finally got something going in the top of the seventh, putting runners on second and third with two outs. The next North Delta batter sent a single into shallow centre field, scoring one run, and the second baserunner rounded third and tried to score. But Carnduff centre fielder Jana Sittler came up with a strong throw to Unchulenko, who tagged the runner out a couple strides shy of the plate. “It’s not the way you want to finish a game, but it’s exciting, for sure,” Hubbard said. “The girls are just overwhelmed. There are girls on this team who weren’t here when we won it in 2002, but now they know what it’s like to win a championship.” Q The Yard Dogs, the lone Abbotsford squad on either side of the draw, missed the playoffs after posting a 2-4 round-robin record. The local men’s team got off to a promising start Thursday, winning two of three games, highlighted by a clutch two-run homer by Tim Folster in the seventh inning of a 5-3

win over the Delisle (Sask.) Diamond Dogs. But that was the last time they would taste victory – they lost their next three, including a 6-3 defeat to Bruno on Saturday which would have put them into a tiebreaker for the last playoff berth. It was still a tremendous season for the Yard Dogs, who won the Fraser Valley Men’s Fastball League and B.C. provincial titles. Q Tourney chair Harv Wiens wanted to bring the Senior B Westerns to Abbotsford to boost the sport locally, and he felt that goal was accomplished. “There are a lot of old-timers who came out who hadn’t seen a lot of good, quality ball in a while,” he noted. “They were pretty excited about it.”

In the event of an NHL lockout, the Abbotsford Heat are in prime position to take advantage. A front-loaded slate of home games is one of the hallmarks of the Heatâ€™s 2012-13 schedule, released last Friday. Ten of the Heatâ€™s first 13

games of the campaign will be played at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre. Thatâ€™s in marked contrast to last season, when just eight of the Heatâ€™s first 25 games were at home. The front-loaded schedule would seem to stand the Heat in good stead if thereâ€™s an NHL work stoppage, in terms of generating local interest in the absence of

NHL games. Abbotsford opens at home on Friday, Oct. 12 against the Peoria Rivermen, and Heat president Ryan Walter said heâ€™s happy with the schedule. â€œI think itâ€™s as good as we can get at home,â€? he said. â€œWe have 13 Friday nights, 13 Saturday nights. Weâ€™re really pleased about that.â€? The Heat are switching

divisions this season, moving from the West to the North, and theyâ€™ll see more of their Canadian rivals, the Toronto Marlies and the Hamilton Bulldogs. Both teams visit the AESC four times. The Heat have also retained their eight-game series â€“ four home, four away â€“ with the Chicago Wolves. The Vancouver Canucksâ€™ affiliate is far and away the

BUCHANAN Robert William May 29, 1930 - August 14, 2012 After a few years battling cancer, Bob passed away peacefully at Mission Memorial Hospital. Bob was a devoted husband and father and will be sadly missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his wife Jackie; sister Gloria; son John; daughters Beverly and Amy; grandchildren Josh, Joseph, Maureen, and Jacob; great granddaughters Mya, Zoey and Gemma; nieces Lianne and Erin. A memorial tea will be held Wednesday August 22nd from 2-4pm at 33201 Cameron Ave., Mission, BC.

He was predeceased by his father Leo Joseph Alphonse Ducharme. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.

Born April 22, 1929 in Romania and passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on August 13, 2012 in Chilliwack. She is predeceased by 3 sisters and 1 brother. Wally is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, Joe; daughters Cathy (Roger), Darlene (Tal) and Annette (Ken); 8 grandchildren and 12 greatgrandchildren as well as her 5 beloved sisters, many nieces, nephews and cherished friends. Wally was multi-talented and there are many who will miss her wonderful cookies, her gentle spirit and gracious soul. She will forever be remembered for her love and compassion for others. A Funeral Mass was held at 11:00am on Tuesday August 21st at St. Ann’s Parish 33333 Mayfair Ave. in Abbotsford. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Wally may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

A gathering in remembrance of Ed will be held at the Abbotsford Flying Club on Sunday, August 26th. Beginning at 3pm with a fly-past at 4:30. All are welcome. William Van Cortlandt Strathy, born April 16, 1924 in Montreal, QC died peacefully in Abbotsford, BC on August 17, 2012. He grew up in Lachine, QC and trained as a pilot during WWII. He flew with the RCAF in Europe, supplying resistance movements against the Nazis. He continued to fly as a professional pilot after the war with the Royal Air Force in the far East. He returned to Canada in 1950 and flew with the RCAF until 1969 when he went to corporate aviation, flying for the Bank of Montreal, Bell Canada and Alcan until 1991. Bill loved and was grateful for his long career as a pilot. He is survived by beloved wife Dawn, son Nick, daughter-inlaw Daini, and grandchildren Esther, Maria and Jack. Visitation will be held at Henderson’s Funeral Home, 34537 Marshall Road, Abbotsford, BC, V2S 1M1, on Friday, August 24, 2012 from 2:00 4:00 pm and 7:00 - 9:00 pm. Now is the perfect time for parents to get their kids fashionably ‘cool for school’ come September. Current style trends cannot be ignored; they are bold, colorful, well put together but have an air of “individuality” and “anything goes”. We’re seeing the Creative Girls in spike-studded ballet flats, the Candy Lovers in neon-on-neon, and denim and backpacks in every print and color. Texty tees have quirky statements like “I mustache you a question” and “I <3 Haters”. We are also seeing tons of scarves and accessories that give kids, especially the Glam Girls, a chance to define their own style. Jeans for boys are still a narrowish straight leg to a skinny, but several brands have issued an ultra-skinny that Hipsters love. Meanwhile, the girls have never had a wider range of colors to choose from. This season you will see hints of tangerines, hot pinks, ultramarines to dusty roses. There are also plenty of soft cotton jean leggings in all kinds of tribal and animal prints. Baggier boyfriend cuts are super cute rolled up with ballet flats. Hey girls, just remember skinnier cuts look best with looser tops but the boyfriend cuts look great with both loose and fitted tops. Footwear is always a great way to mark your personal style. The Olympic Athletes sported a ton of neon trainers and we are seeing everything from the classic slip-on Vans on the Skater Boys to patten leather and neon Adidas high-tops. Ballet flats are out in everything from sequins to Navajo prints and nautical to leopard. Desert boots and beaded moccasins are everywhere too. Layers and pattern mixing is always cool. The Prep Boys are leaning towards their favorite jeans with a plaid button-up over a striped tee with a denim or varsity jackets and a pair of slip-on Vans or Converse. The Techy Boys have replaced last year’s bold and colorful stripes with a more understated super-thin stripe and bowties, yes bowties! The Social Butterflies are loving looks; like flirty floral skirts mixed with denim button-up boyfriend shirts, wrists full of friendship bracelets and army jackets. These girls never forget their phones or their printed scarves. Trends are all about personality and individuality. There are almost no rules to break as long as you are wearing what you like with confidence. So wear your heart on your jean jacket, your message on your t-shirt, your friends on your wrists and your personality on your feet.
