Corporation CEO involved in credit card controversy

The Nanaimo Economic Development Cor poration’s new chief executive officer had to pay back $29,000 in personal expenses charged to a government credit card while working as chief of staff to a former Alberta MLA in 2004.

Sasha Angus, who was announced Wednesday as NEDC’s new leader, was the top aide to economic and development minister Mark Norris for more than three years.

When Norris lost his seat in 2004, both he and Angus were out of work. Norris was Alberta’s only cabinet minister defeated in Alberta’s 2004 election.

Expenses on the government credit card included a night with friends in Las Vegas and a personal plane ticket.

I n a n i n t e r v i ew with the News Bulletin, Angus said it was policy to put personal expenses on public credit cards and pay them back.

“It was government policy at the time and I would highlight what my expenses were and then the department would tell me what I owed and I would pay it back,” said Angus.

“It was paid back in full prior to leaving government and it’s been something that was policy of the day and something I regret.

Tourism study seeks feedback

House fire deemed suspicious

A late night house fire has been handed over to the Nanaimo RCMP to look into.

The blaze broke out in the back of a house at 763 Albert St. in south Nanaimo at about 11:45 p.m. Wednesday.

The exterior siding and back porch of the home was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived and caused significant damage by the time fire crews snuffed it out.

Rick Kwasnecha, Nanaimo Fire Rescue fire prevention officer, said based on the location and circumstances of the fire, he deemed its cause suspicious and turned the investigation over to police after his initial findings at about 3 a.m. Thursday.

Mounties seize drugs, weapons Nanaimo RCMP seized drugs and weapons and arrested a man after they searched a house in the 100 block of Gillespie Street Wednesday.

Nanaimo’s RCMP Drug Unit, backed up by the Vancouver Island Emergency Response Team, moved in on the house at about 5 p.m.

The search turned up several ounces of illegal drugs, including crack cocaine, crystal methamphetamine and marijuana, along with brass knuckles, bear spray and replica handguns.

Sgt. Sheryl Armstrong, Nanaimo RCMP spokeswoman, said the replica handguns are impossible to distinguish from real weapons until examined.

Martin Wade Monague, 42, of Nanaimo, appeared in Nanaimo provincial court Thursday and pleaded guilty to possession for the purpose of trafficking and possession of a prohibited weapon. He was sentenced to 15 months in jail.

The Nanaimo Economic Development Corporation is embarking on a medium-term strategy to increase the role of tourism in Nanaimo, and wants to hear from citizens and tourism stakeholders on the city’s strong and weak points in that sector.

The strategy is being designed with the help of public feedback. “What we’re looking for is to understand both what the community feels are our most iconic attractions or areas they feel are our strengths as well as what they feel are areas we should continue to market and what’s working for us and what isn’t,� said Jenn Houtby-Ferguson, spokeswoman for NEDC.

Two open houses for further consultation are also being planned for the fall.

Murder trial set for 2013 Two Nanaimo men charged in connection with the murder of Brittany Baird will stand trial in Supreme Court next February and March.

Christopher James Robinson and Marcus Brandon Parry were charged with second-degree murder several days after Baird was found dead on Milford Crescent near Selby Street in May 2011.

The men are in to court Jan. 8 for a pre-trial conference and their trial in Supreme Court in Nanaimo by judge and jury is scheduled to take place over 15 days beginning Feb. 25.

B

eing a rider on the Canadian Cancer Society Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock is a personal mission for West Shore RCMP Const. Harrison Teed.

When he was 14 years old his mother was diagnosed with cancer. “When I was so young I didn’t know; I thought she was going to die,� said Teed, adding his mother has been cancer-free for 11 years. “It was tough for me to deal with this at 14, and now I try to picture myself (in the place of my mother) let alone two, three and five years dealing with this.�

More people are surviving from cancer than they were a decade ago and Teed credits that to the hard work of cancer researchers and fundraising efforts like the Tour de Rock.

When he told his mother what he is training to do she was happy and proud of her son.

While Teed enjoys cycling, gearing up for the tour is what has gotten him back on the bike. “It’s been probably over five years since I’ve been on a bicycle,� Teed said. Now he rides upwards of three days a week. “Although it’s hard work riding and training, it’s absolutely nothing compared to what the kids are going though. Those are the ones who are suffering,� Teed said.

Teed has been with the West Shore RCMP detachment for four years. He grew up in Eastern Canada and his father was also in the RCMP.

Risk of oil spill heavyy on B.C. Alberta Premier Alison Redford doesn’t seem to understand what the fuss is about.

She has been feuding with B.C. Premier Christy Clark over the Northern Gateway pipeline, ever since Clark suggested that B.C. does not get enough benefits from a pipeline which would be operated by a company with a spotty safety record in recent years.

In addition, the pipeline would traverse many environmentally sensitive areas and would supply tankers which would travel along B.C.’s northern coast – which means risks to B.C. Redford was in Vancouver last week and reiterated that she doesn’t plan to share any of Alberta’s oil wealth with B.C. She added that there needs to be a national energy strategy – something which seems a bit odd coming from Alberta, given its white-hot hatred of the National Energy Program 30 years ago.

Redford’s position on sharing energy royalties isn’t unreasonable. B.C. doesn’t share resource revenues with Alberta, or any other province for that matter.

But Redford doesn’t seem to fully comprehend that B.C. is taking the major portion of the risk that this pipeline will bring, with little to show for it.

Redford and her fellow oil barons need to understand a few facts about B.C. First and foremost, almost all First Nations along the proposed route oppose this pipeline. They have sufficient legal rights to tie up this project indefinitely in court, if not stop it entirely.

Second, B.C. residents do not oppose exports. Ports provide many good jobs here. But they, like most Canadians, also value the environment. B.C.’s environment is a major attraction to many of us, and a big oil spill would be completely unacceptable.

Redford needs to be just a little less hard-nosed and more understanding of her neighbours. We should be co-operating, not feuding.

They’ll be gauging the contentedness of the local population.

Are people pumped to be here? Is there pride in what people do for a living?

Visitors pick up on that stuff. I know I do when I travel and visit other places. From little villages to big cities, it’s easy to sense civic pride, and even easier to sense a lack of it.

Would an aquarium, as an example, fit in? Maybe. But before we begin dropping cash on what we think visitors might like to see here, it might be worthwhile to ensure the citizens footing the bill and paying the taxes are content first.

Communication should be easy

To the Editor, Re: Communication manager a waste of taxpayers’ money, Letters, Aug. 16.

I couldn’t agree more with Gary Korpan’s comment regarding the waste of money for the city to hire what is virtually a spin doctor.

Good two-way communication with councillors and senior staff should be forthright and easy. There are times when the council looks good and times when it most definitely does not. A communications manager will do nothing beyond accentuating the former and minimizing the latter, and we, the taxpayers, are supposed to see value in this?

Old building key to downtown success To the Editor, I believe the the old A&B building along with adjacent parking lots could hold the key to change the downtown core.

We need to get tourists to the area, inform them, provide safe parking and transport them in a timely manner.

Maybe we should remove the inconvenient parking meters from downtown Nanaimo and increase free parking times, disqualify employees from parking in key street areas, move the employees’ parking to the lower levels of the Bastion Street parkade and increase the security in the parkade to promote usage.

A large number of people are getting to the retirement age and an increased use of minielectric vehicles is evident.

An increase in retirement homes in Nanaimo suggests new and promoted services in the near future. The mantra of downtown needs to wake up to changing lifestyles and street usage that doesn’t revolve around the automobile.

We need to promote bus services. The current schedule does not start early enough or end late enough.

Employees who work downtown need to drive (to and from) work because of the

current bus schedule.

Late night dancers and drinkers have limited choices because the lack of late bus service leaves people with choices of walking, taxi or risk drinking and driving. The fears of insecure parking and or transportation expenses are not promoting Nanaimo’s nightlife. The lack of clientele will see more business closures if things don’t change.

Tourism Nanaimo and the Nanaimo Economic Development Corporation could be combined and moved into the A&B building site.

The current tourism locations are invisible and a better place could be in the centre hub of parking and transportation. A portion of the building could provide bike, electric bike and scooter rentals.

Parking along Terminal Avenue could be developed to connect both an inner mini bus system and major bus routes.

The amount of vacant commercial buildings in Nanaimo may be due to foreign investment or investors using our town as a property hedge against inflation. There is no motivation to fill vacant properties or manage the curb

appeal. The city may look at dealing with those commercial properties with some simple bylaws.

To the Editor, Why are B.C. taxpayers, via government, always held for ransom, by government employees?

Presently in B.C., we have a Liberal government that has offered the BCGEU a 3.5-per cent wage increase over a twoyear contract – two per cent in the first year and 1.5 per cent in the second year.

Not good enough for the BCGEU. They request 3.5 per cent in the first year, and a cost of living in the second year. Manitoba and Nova Scotia both have NDP governments and they are offering the government employees a two-year contract with zero wage increase, because of the poor economic times.

It’s about time that B.C. taxpayers show government employees who is the boss.

Disc degeneration is not an unavoidable part of DR. KAREN MATTERN aging. The disc receives its nutrition from surrounding fluids. When the vertebrae are not moving properly, the disc can no longer expand and contract, and it becomes brittle and inelastic.

This stimulates the production of new bone in the form of protrusions from the vertebrae, or bony spurs. Even when degeneration is present, however, it is frequently not the cause of pain. The pain is the result of improper movement of the spinal joints and can frequently be relieved by correcting the joint movement. In addition, restoring proper joint function can prevent further degeneration.

A degenerating disc is not a contraindiction for chiropractic care. In most cases, restoration of movement to the spinal joints can bring relief of back pain and slow down further deterioration. What is a consumer proposal and who can make one?

A consumer proposal is a formal arrangement GARETH SLOCOMBE, CA, CIRP to consolidate and compromise debts owed to unsecured creditors (i.e. not mortgages or car loans). It is filed though a licensed Trustee under the laws of the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act. In this kind of arrangement, you may pay your off debts through a single regular monthly payment over a period of usually between three to five years. Depending on what unencumbered assets you have and your level of income, it is possible that you may pay as little as 10% to 20% of your outstanding debts in some cases. All interest is stopped and the creditors involved may not take any further action against you such as garnishments etc. Also, you will only need 51% of the creditors (by dollar value) to vote in favour of the proposal in order to bind all other creditors in the compromise.

In order to be eligible to file a consumer proposal you can not have total debts of more than $250,000 excluding a mortgage on your principal residence.

Young people Harbour City ambassadors Nanaimo has a host of young people to be proud of.

Students attending school in the Harbour City are achieving high standards not only in the classroom, but also in the community.

They volunteer with any number of organizations and have one thing in common: their desire to make a difference in helping others.

It’s impossible to name them all, but the News Bulletin’s Best and Brightest section profiles those who clearly stand out.

Created five years ago to highlight the accomplishments of graduating high school students, the section looks at what 12 young people did for their school, their peers, younger students and the community.

Academic achievement played a part in the list, but not all of it.

We searched for students who go above and beyond to make that tangible difference in the lives of people they come in contact with.

We’re looking for good citizens, not just good students.

Reporter Jenn McGarrigle spoke to district officials, principals and teachers, as well as community organizations to create a list of outstanding students.

Community volunteerism a part of Hustins’s psyche

A

t a g e 18, Mar nie Hustins’s volunteer resumé is longer than many people will ever achieve in their lifetime.

The Woodlands Secondary School graduate likes to keep busy and help others.

Interested in a career in the medical field, she volunteered at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital for five years, logging more than 250 hours doing tasks such as getting patients water, helping out nurses in any way she could and leading the new candy striper recruits.

“My mom was a candy striper and I’ve always wanted to be involved with medicine ever since I was diagnosed with diabetes,” she said. “I want to give back to the system that helped me.”

Hustins and her older sister were the first volunteers under the age of 18 to assist residents at Nanaimo Travellers Lodge –

Hustins was still in elementary school when she started.

“I started with painting their nails and doing the ladies’ hair,” she said. “It’s nice to lend a hand – it’s seeing the smiles and the benefits of your work.”

Through the Nanaimo Youth Volunteer Cor ps, Hustins involved herself with numerous community events and fundraisers and she volunteered at Haven Society two years ago, manning the front desk and helping out with events.

It was tough for her to see women and children in such emotional distress.

“A lot of people don’t get the attention they need,” said Hustins.

At school, Hustins heavily involved herself with student council and was co-president last year, organizing and leading a group of 60 students.

Council organized bake sales, barbecues and other fundraisers

that culminated in a $1,500 donation to the Nanaimo and District SPCA. Participating in student council led her to the school’s environmental club, where she started a B.C. Hydro Energy Ambassadors program at her school.

Hustins got to thinking about how to get the word out about the environmental club and in the fall of 2011, started the school’s first student newspaper with the help of a teacher and using a simple computer program.

Hustins is studying biology at Vancouver Island University this fall.

“I know I want to be involved with medicine and helping people, but I can’t say for sure where I’ll be in 10 years,” she said.

Jan Durvin, the teacher sponsor for Woodlands’ student council, said Hustins is a consistent, solid leader who invested hundreds of hours in student council.

Gates ready to serve country through a military career A ndrew Gates plans to reach new heights in his chosen career.

The Cedar Secondary School graduate is heading to the Royal Military College of Canada in Kingston, Ont., with the help of a $200,000 scholarship to study aeronautical engineering.

He wants to fly fighter jets for the military.

Flying has been on Gates’s radar ever since he was a toddler. His father and grandfather before him were civilian pilots and since he was three years old, the family has owned a small plane.

Then he joined the 205 Collishaw Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron when he was 12 and several years later, his dream of

flying became a reality.

When he was 16, he earned a scholarship to get his glider pilot’s licence.

Last summer, he was one of 40 air cadets chosen to complete his motor pilot’s licence at age 17 – an impressive achievement given that only the top two per cent of air cadets

actually become pilots.

“It makes driving cars look easy,” he said.

Flying gives Gates a thrill that few other activities can do.

“It’s kind of like being on a roller coaster, except you can control it,” he said. “It gives you a real feeling of freedom.”

Gates initially joined cadets because his father volunteered with the squadron, teaching the theory of flying. But quickly it became clear that a military career would be perfect for him.

“After the first year in cadets, I knew I wanted a flying career and at the same time, I wanted it to be in the military,” said Gates. “It’s a great opportunity to make friends around the world, travel lots. Protecting your country is a huge responsibility, but as huge of a responsibility as it is, it’s equally rewarding. If you want to help people, I can’t think of a better way to do it.”

Throughout high school Gates has devoted much of his time to cadets – he plays trumpet in the squadron band and is one of the top shots in the province on the cadet biathlon team – but he also plays rugby to balance off a demanding course load and his cadet duties.

Capt. Bill Derby, commanding officer of Gates’s squadron, said Gates was heavily involved with the group in many capacities, including as an instructor.

“He’s one of our strongest cadets by a long shot,” he said. “He’s got no ability to sit back and watch, he has to apply himself and he does well at everything.”

Swanton strives to make a big difference

my Swanton believes anything is possible if you work hard enough.

“I really feel I can take on anything,” said the Aspengrove School graduate. “Sometimes I work a little too hard.”

She decided to take on three advanced placement courses this year – studio art, English and calculus – and challenged the physics AP course. Advanced placement courses, considered to be the equivalent of first-year university courses, end with an exam that can earn students university credits.

“The science and math I really enjoy, but I also like the arts,” said Swanton. “It’s a few hours a day where I can sit down and have a break from my heavy course load.”

She wants to become a website developer, a job that utilizes her scientific, technological side as well as her creative side. In her spare time, she wants to travel to developing nations on volunteer

missions – an important goal ever since a life-changing trip to China two years ago.

Swanton and 11 of her classmates went on the trip, which was organized by teachers through the Me to We organization, a global network of children helping children.

The students hand-dug the foundation for an addition to a small school in a rural village in Sichuan province. Each day, they walked up a long hill into the village because the road was too rough for travel by vehicle.

The students were amazed at the way the villagers lived without electricity or running water, but Swanton found that if she set aside her Western prejudices, she saw residents as people who cherished the little things in life and helped each other out.

The looks on the faces of the children who would benefit kept her going when she was tired.

“The happiest I’ve ever been is

making a difference in other people’s lives,” said Swanton. “I find it so satisfying.”

She’s made a big difference in her own community as well.

In her last years of high school, Swanton has volunteered at the SPCA, collected donations during the Salvation Army’s Christmas Kettle campaign, raised money to put on a graduation celebration for her peers and organized school events through student council.

Swanton also helped organize fundraisers for local charities through the school’s Me to We Club, which the students formed after their China trip.

To fit some exercise into her busy days, Swanton and her mother, a teaching assistant at Aspengrove, bike to school each day.

“It’s nice to spend that extra bit of time together,” she said.

Swanton enters the computer science program at VIU this fall with the help of a full-ride scholarship.

Valsangkar shares his talents with others

S

ome people have a knack for numbers; others an ear for music.

Nathan Valsangkar excels in both and he’s a talented athlete to boot.

The Dover Bay Secondary School graduate’s top subjects include science, math and music.

“A lot of people are either creative or logical and somehow I’ve got both,” he said.

Valsangkar plays the trombone and tuba in a school band – last year the band won first place in the Upper Island Music Festival – and for the past couple of years, he’s saved the band lots of money in sheet music costs by arranging the band’s music.

Music arrangement is when an already written composition is prepared for presentation for a specific group of performers.

Valsangkar writes out the base, drums, melodies and harmonies of a piece by listening to the song and he also wrote and arranged

a song for the senior jazz band to play.

Music is a form of self-expression and release for him.

“I can’t draw or paint or anything,” said Valsangkar. “If I’ve had a bad day, good day, I can go play some music, let it all out.”

He is also in a brass quintet, which plays at weddings and other events, and shares his talents on the guitar with residents of Nanaimo Seniors Village every month.

He’s passionate about music, but science and math take a larger role in his chosen career path – he heads to the University of Guelph to study biomedical engineering with the eventual goal of becoming a doctor or medical researcher.

He finds the human body’s cardiovascular and nervous systems fascinating and likes the innovative, problem-solving aspect of engineering.

“I like thinking of different ways to solve problems,” said

Valsangkar. “You really have to go outside your mental comfort zone to come to a solution.”

He also likes to challenge himself physically – he has been on Dover’s wrestling team since Grade 8 and made it to the nationals two years ago, where he came in 12th in his category. He coaches the wrestling team at Randerson Ridge Elementary School, is a certified referee and tutors his peers in math and science on the side.

“I’ve got so much stuff back to back, I can’t really slack off,” said Valsangkar. “But everything I do, I enjoy doing.”

Valsangkar is one of 30 Loran scholars from across Canada selected by the Canadian Merit Scholarship Foundation. The Loran scholarship, which includes a $9,000 annual living stipend matched by a tuition waiver by the recipient’s chosen university, is awarded based on character, service and leadership potential as well as academics.

Dolbec has a heart for assisting her peers and community V

anessa Dolbec has a flair for the dramatic.

When her father asked her years ago what she wanted to be when she grew up, she told him she wanted to be an actress.

When he told her he thought it was hard to make a career out of acting, Dolbec brushed off his concerns with an elaborate, fake faint.

She tried out for a role in a production of the Sound of Musicc in Sooke when she was five and her enthusiasm earned her a place as Gretel’s understudy.

“They said I was too little, but I knew all the songs and was dancing everywhere,” said Dolbec. “Acting is the best feeling in the world. When the lights come up, feeling all the eyes on you – it’s the biggest adrenaline rush.”

Dolbec played Rizzo, one of the lead roles in Nanaimo District Secondary School’s production of Grease this year and a role she describes as about as far from her own personality as possible.

“I got to be really mean,” she said. “I think it’s fun to be someone completely different than yourself.”

Participating in the play took up hours of time, but that’s not all Dolbec did this year.

She got involved with Empathy NDSS along with some peers after taking a suicide prevention course organized by the Vancouver Island Crisis Line.

“We were trying to promote that everyone has someone to talk to,” said

Dolbec. “I’m the listener in my group of friends even though I talk a lot. I’m the motherly one.”

As president of the Francophone student council – students from the Francophone school district elementary school finish high school at NDSS – she ran meetings and helped organize fundraisers and events for her peers.

Matthews devoted to a ‘greener’ world W

hen Kieryn Matthews makes up her mind to do something, she is not easily discouraged.

Last fall, she took an idea planted by a former Wellington Secondary School student for establishing a “green” wall – a wall of living plants – at the school and brought a modified version of this idea to fruition despite some challenges.

When Matthews proposed a six-metre green wall across the front of the school, district officials suggested she scale back the project because they were worried that the project was too ambitious and would be subject to vandalism.

Instead of giving up, Matthews went back to the drawing board and came up with a proposal to build a green wall and aquaponics system in the inner court-

yard. Aquaponics is a sustainable food production system that combines growing fish with growing vegetables.

The system uses less energy and water than growing plants the traditional way and acts as a natural insulator for the wall.

“This is such an important system that we need to be learning about,” said Matthews. “It’s teaching kids about food security and eco-systems.”

She’s devoted numerous hours to educating her peers about environmental issues.

Matthews founded an environmental club at her school after doing stream rehabilitation and invasive plant removal work with local biologist Charles Thirkill.

Through the club, she got her peers involved with beach cleanups, stream surveys and fish

counts in a park near the school.

Her school and community involvement extend well beyond environmental initiatives, partly due to an injury that sidelined her synchronized swimming activities – she swam with the Nanaimo Diamonds and was training for a national competition when she had to quit.

In school, Matthews was heavily involved with student council and outside of school, she volunteered at numerous city-sponsored events and kids camps.

She heads to Vancouver Island University in the fall. Her goal is to make a career out of helping to create a more sustainable future, perhaps as an environmental consultant, and she wants to transfer to Simon Fraser University’s new faculty of environment department.

Dolbec also headed up the student prom committee and was on the School Planning Council, made up of one student, three parents and administrators and charged with developing a plan for improving student achievement.

She got involved in many of these activities by volunteering herself.

“I really wanted to just get more involved, feel like I am making a difference,” said Dolbec.

Outside NDSS, the bilingual student sang the national anthem at the Maple Sugar Festival, volunteered as a candy striper at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital and was involved with the Conseil Scholaire Francophone’s Reseau Jeunesse, a group dedicated to promoting French in Canadian communities.

She wants to combine her love of acting with a love of kids by becoming a high school drama teacher and starts the theatre program at the University of Victoria in September.

Teacher Russell Berg, who runs the NDSS drama club, said Dolbec has a heart for helping other people and looks for opportunities to do that.

FRANCOEUR, Lionel Lionel passed away, peacefully, on July 31, 2012 at the age of 91.

Lionel was born in Shell Lake, Saskatchewan, in 1921, and moved Vancouver to Island in 1945. He was predeceased

by Lucienne, his loving wife of 66 years. He is survived by his daughters: Anita (Larry), Aline and Lucille (Peter); 3 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; and sisters, Marguerite and Therese.

Lionel was a long standing contractor in Nanaimo and built many apartment buildings, including the ďŹ rst concrete high rise, the Royal Vista.

The B.C. Football Conference’s powerhouse programs are stepping on the field to trade touchdowns and tackles.

The V.I. Raiders host the Okanagan Sun today (Aug. 18) at Caledonia Park.

“It’s huge,” said Matthew (Snoop) Blokker, Raiders coach.

“It’s Okanagan Sun week and everyone marks it on the calendar as soon as the schedule comes out.”

The Raiders (1-0-1) are coming off a 31-31 tie with the Langley Rams and while the Sun (1-1) haven’t been invincible this season, either, Okie’s last game was a 35-7 thrashing of the Kamloops Broncos.

“They’re big, they’re physical and they’re fast and that’s the way the Sun have always been and it’s no different…” Blokker said. “We expect to have just as good, if not better of an opponent in this week as we did last week.”

O k a n a g a n’s d e f e n c e i s anchored by defensive end Steven Doege, a B.C. Lions practice roster player. The Sun offence this season is keyed by Bobby Davis, a former quarterback who has moved to slotback.

“We’ve got to make sure that we’re on everything, all aspects of the game, not just on run or pass,” said Jon Jones, Raiders linebacker. “We’ve got to be focused on what they’re trying to do and just ready for anything they’re going to throw at us.”

Aside from the X’s and O’s, the Sun are sure to throw all-out effort at the Raiders.

Training camp set to start for Clippers team The Nanaimo Clippers will play for a championship at season’s end, and next week they take their first strides in that direction.

The city’s B.C. Hockey League team opens training camp Monday (Aug. 20), with the first on-ice sessions starting the next day at Nanaimo Ice Centre.

“We’re very excited to get going…” said Mike Va n d e k a m p, C l i p p e r s coach and general manager. “Obviously we’ve had a busy off-season trying to put this thing together and build ourselves a hockey team.”

Thirty-eight players have been invited to training camp, and 22 roster spots will be available for the regular season.

“It’s going to be a really competitive environment, but that just comes with the territory,” Vandekamp said.

Re t u r n i n g ve t e r a n s should feel confident, but not complacent, said the coach, and he hopes to see good things from them.

“I expect everybody to have had very serious offseasons when it comes to training and preparation for this year,” he said.

GAME ON … Look for more on training camp in the next issue of the News Bulletin … The players will be split into two groups for the first week, with practices going at 9 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. and scrimmages at 6 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday and 5:30 p.m.

New Jr. B squad holding camp The city’s new junior B hockey team takes to the ice this weekend for its first-ever training camp. The Nanaimo Buccaneers of the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League opened their three-day camp Friday at the Nanaimo Ice Centre.

The Bucs recently announced the signings of four players, Lynden Eddy, Jackson Robinson, Robert Cahill and Travis Briggs. Briggs played the last two seasons with the Oceanside Generals and was their third-leading scorer in 2011-12, finishing with 14 goals, 20 assists and 89 penalty minutes in 41 games.

The Buccaneers have their first exhibition game Aug. 31 against the Generals at 7 p.m. at the NIC.

Candy Crushers win first bout The Nanaimo Nemesis Candy Crushers junior girls’ roller derby team crushed the competition in its first-ever bout.

The team defeated the Victoria Rotten Apples on Saturday by a 229192 score at Frank Crane Arena. The Apples are the junior affiliate of the Eves of Destruction team.

Softball player ends with silver A Nanaimo softball standout helped her team make it all the way to the national final.

Cheyenne deLaronde and her Victoria Devils ’96 fastpitch team placed second at the Softball Canada championships in Brantford, Ont. after falling to the Delta Heat in Sunday’s final. The Devils were right there with the country’s best, having defeated the Heat the day before in playoff-round action.

DeLaronde finished the tourney with a 3.10 earned-run average and a .336 batting average.
