Turning over command
LCol Jason Kenny greets his new command as the new commanding officer of the 407 Long Range Patrol Squadron. Photo by Cpl. Sylvie Kervin
With the sounds of the pipes and drums of the RCAF Band hanging in the air, LCol David Robinson officially relinquished command of 407 Long Range Patrol Squadron to LCol Jason Kenny in a ceremony Aug. 9 at 19 Wing Comox. Over 250 of one of the RCAF’s largest squadrons were joined on the tarmac by other members of 19 Wing for the parade, which featured musicians and fly-bys by CP-140 Aurora aircraft. “Commanding the men and women of 407 Sqn has been a tremendous experience and certainly the highlight of my career,” said LCol Robinson. “It has been an honour and a privilege to work with these people. Canadians can take great pride in the dedication and professionalism that the members of 407
Squadron demonstrate each and every day.” The new Commanding Officer, LCol Kenny, takes over at a time when Long Range Patrol squadrons are seeing some exciting changes in terms of aircraft upgrades and changing mission types. The new Block III CP-140 Auroras continue to enter into service and represent a major technological leap forward for Canada’s intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance gathering capabilities. “The men and women of this squadron have answered many calls in recent years, from Afghanistan to Libya, and of course, protecting Canadians by keeping watch over our shores” said newly appointed commanding officer LCol Kenny. “I look forward to meeting
the Demons of 407 Squadron as we take on new missions and new roles in the defence of Canada.” LCol Kenny entered the Canadian Forces under the Regular Officer Training Plan in 1993, first attending le College Militaire Royale de St-Jean in 1993, and graduating from the Royal Military College of Canada at Kingston in 1998 with a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration. Upon completion of his pilot training in 1999, he served with 415 Maritime Patrol Squadron where he had the opportunity to deploy to the Middle East for Operation Apollo in 2002. Posted to 404 Long Range Patrol and Training Squadron in 2005, LCol Kenny served as the Unit Flight Safety Officer. He is a Qualified
Flight Instructor on the CP-140 and has over 4,000 hours of flying time, with more than 3,000 hours on the CP-140 Aurora. About 407 Squadron 407 Long Range Patrol Squadron is primarily responsible for the surveillance of Canadian coastal waters. Traditionally, this has meant watching for foreign submarines off the coasts. Today, this is only one part of its surveillance role, as the squadron continues to protect the safety and security of Canadians at home and abroad. Flying CP-140 Auroras, the crews spend long hours over the ocean looking for illegal fishing, migrant and drug smuggling and polluters. They can also perform search and rescue Cont. on Page 4

The fishing frenzy is on for anglers using spinning gear or on the fly on the Campbell River for Pink salmon. On any given day, a number of fishermen concentrate between the bridges. Many will gather on the low water during the day and the evening hours have been very good. On the fly green, pink and blue flies are producing Pinks that are ranging between 2 and 4 pounds. More fish are expected to enter the river Mouth of the Campbell River this month. The first week of August saw nice catches of Chinook salmon coming in from Painter’s Lodge. Scott Johson hooked into a 32 pounder, Herb Johnson a 33.8 and Mark Rainville a 27.5 pounder. The Tyee Club will see lots of anglers and rowers out in the pool. The season has started off with some undersize fish already caught, weighing in at 18 and 23 pounds. Last year Paul McDonald of Campbell River caught the first Tyee of the season with rower R.D. Berger. The Tyee Club’s annual general meeting will be held at Painters Lodge on Saturday August 18. Fishing has been very good on local lakes that hold small trout. The best time to fish is early morning or late evening. Remember when the weather is hot the fish go down. d A free fishing derby will be b held Saturday, September 222 at Roberts Lake just nnorth of Campbell River. Going out of town? Make sure you unplug and save energy and costs Planning a vacation this summer or even a small getaway trip over the long weekend? While on vacation, be smart with your power and cut down on electricity use and costs. Here is an energyefficient vacation check list: ■ Lights: Turn them off. Set up some energy-efficient lamps on timers for security and use photo sensors or motion detectors for outdoor lights. ■ Refrigerator
and freezer: Consider emptying your fridge and freezer completely and then unplugging them if you’ll be away over an extended period of time. For shorter trips, try filling old containers with water to improve your fridge’s efficiency. Having an empty fridge or freezer requires more energy to cool the empty spaces. ■ TVs and stereos: Unplug all TVs, stereos and all related components, except

your set top box/VCR if you plan to record shows while you are away. Consider using an Energy Star set top box. ■ Water heater: Set electric heaters to the lowest temperature. For gas water heaters, you can use the vacation setting. ■ Air conditioners and ceiling fans: Make sure to turn off air conditioners and ceiling fans. To minimize heat entering your home, draw your blinds and close other
window coverings. ■ Appliances with clocks: Anything with a clock – for example microwave ovens or coffee machines - uses electricity so don’t forget to unplug these appliances to diminish “phantom” load. ■ Other electronics and devices: Many electronics still draw power even when they are in an off state. Unplug all nonessential devices, like phone chargers. An average Canadian household wastes $43

Spay/neuter grants available The BC SPCA is launching a new spay/neuter grant competition that will help communities across British Columbia address the tragedy of pet overpopulation. Through a $75,000 legacy from a compassionate BC SPCA donor who was concerned about the suffering of homeless cats, the SPCA will be distributing grants of $2,500, $5,000 and $7,500 to municipalities and First Nations communities to assist low-income cat owners and individuals and groups who care for free-roaming cats. The grants will be available to, and administered by, registered animal charities, municipalities, veterinarians, First Nations governments and First Nations tribal councils. “We are pleased to launch this initiative to help reduce cat overpopulation in B.C. communities,” says BC SPCA chief executive officer Craig Daniell. “Each year thousands of cats and kittens are dropped off at SPCA shelters or simply abandoned by their guardians in public areas. By providing communities with spay/ neuter support we believe we can reduce the number of unwanted litters and help end the suffering of homeless cats.”

Collaboration paying off for pinks It’s common this time of year to see anglers lined along the banks of the Campbell River fishing for pink salmon. And with the Pinks for the Pier partnership between the City of Campbell River, First Nations, and Quinsam
River Hatchery, there is also abundant pink salmon fishing right off the Discovery Pier. But it wasn’t long ago that pink salmon were seriously depleted. “By the 1970s, a combination of habitat changes and
commercial fishing had significantly reduced the abundance of pink salmon throughout the Strait of Georgia,” said Dr. Brian Riddell, president and CEO of the Pacific Salmon Foundation. “The federal government’s major investment in

hatcheries starting in the 1970s and Quinsam River Hatchery’s local work over the years made it possible to regenerate this important local run of pink salmon.” Riddell’s Vancouver-based foundation has been spearheading an effort to raise the public’s appreciation of pink salmon since he joined the non-profit in 2009. Riddell said the often overlooked pink salmon is the most abundant of the seven species of Pacific salmon, and is second only to coho salmon in geographic distribution throughout British Columbia. He added that pink salmon is also considered the healthiest type of salmon to eat because its short two-year lifespan gives it less time to collect potentially harmful
chemicals. Riddell and the Pacific Salmon Foundation team were on-hand for the inaugural Campbell River Pink Salmon Festival, July 28 at Robert Ostler Park, organized by Campbell River resident Larry E. Stefanyk. But getting to a moment of celebration took more than 30 years of concerted effort by the Quinsam River Hatchery staff working hand in glove with “streamkeeping” volunteers, businesses, First Nations, and the local and provincial governments to bring the pinks back. The success has had far-reaching positive ramifications beyond Campbell River. Anglers fishing for pink salmon all along the east coast of Vancouver Island are likely reeling in fish from the Quinsam
River Hatchery. That’s because the natural pink run has improved so dramatically here that the Quinsam River Hatchery can now distribute extra pink salmon eggs to other watersheds. The local effort to restore pinks took a major step forward in 2005 with excavation work that created fish passage channels in the upper reaches of the Quinsam River, a tributary of the Campbell River. Creating the channels was particularly important because pink salmon are the first salmon to return to their native rivers to spawn, typically in August and early September. Water flows are often lower at that time of year due to limited summer rainfall, resulting in more barriers that keep salmon from returning to upper-river
spawning grounds. Now, pink salmon can migrate an additional 14 kilometres up the Quinsam River where they spawn and die. Their carcasses then become an all-youcan-eat buffet for more than 130 other species of animals and plants, as well as nutrients for next year’s growth. The effort, which has worked exactly as planners hoped, involved the Quinsam River Hatchery, Pacific Salmon Foundation, Haig-Brown Kingfisher Creek Society, BC Hydro and the provincial government. Following the creation of the fish passage channels, upwards of 12 million non-hatchery pink salmon fry migrate out of the Quinsam River compared to one million prior to the work.

Line up your weekend for a Big Time Out There is something awesome brewing again up in the hills above the Comox Valley and it’s all about massive sounds, wicked visuals, huge dancing and big time fun! It’s The Big Time Out and it comes to life in the Village of Cumberland this Saturday and Sunday. The 2012 performer roster is chocked full with fresh talent from near and far and a final few artists have been added to the roster over the past two weeks including a huge talent who is coming home to the Island after a phenomenal touring year in some of Canada’s top venues. His travels this summer have included the Calgary Stampede and performances of the song ‘Ride’, which he composed as the theme song for the
Stampede’s 100th Anniversary. Wil has a gift and he loves to share it. In his musicianship, lyrics and live performance, he exudes an equal measure of ferocious intent and heart wrenching beauty: as one fan eloquently stated “he’s a saw blade cutting though fine silk”. Whether performing live, recording an album or writing for film, Wil is a dedicated and consummate professional. Wil uses his legendary live show performances to develop his expansive roots-rock sound to create a style that is honest, edgy, raw and delicate yet achingly beautiful all at once. One such performance was written as “as having
Wil, who composed the theme song for the Calgary Stampede, comes home for the Big Time Out. so much power and soul it could stop your heart.” Another recent addition to the 2012 program is Rocky Mountain Rebel Music (RMRM). RMRM combine forces to create broadly influenced and super high energy music that drives the crowds into
a dancing frenzy. Recently voted Victoria’s Favorite Band by Monday Magazine, RMRM is charged by Reggae, Rock, Funk, Dub, Dancehall, Punk, and World Rhythms, delivering an original sound that defies comparison. Shredding guitars,
