Loosing someone to cancer is never easy and for a family who has made the journey it is memories and the legacy of their loved one that becomes the most precious. This week Dave Girling and his sales team at Cranbrook Dodge decided to honour Corinna Girling by presenting a tribute gift of $10,000 donation to East Kootenay Foundation for Health. The donation is earmarked for the A Clear View – digital mammography campaign as a legacy to the courage and strength demonstrated by CorinWILDSTONE

na during her cancer journey. This gift is one of passion as earlier in the month, Dave and Cranbrook Dodge also presented over $11,000 for cancer research as part of its ongoing support of the Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay for Life campaign. “There are moments that take your breath away when a person makes a gift to the campaign and also takes time to share their story. For Dave and me it was time to reĂ€ect on how special Corinna’s life was. The gift from Dave and his sales team was a touching gesture of the power of the human spirit,â€? ex-

plains EKFH’s Donna Grainger. Whether it is to remember a loved one, honour the current journey of a cancer patient or simply because it makes a difference to the quality of health care we receive in the East Kootenay, the A Clear View ~ digital campaign is blessed by many gifts of support. EKFH wishes to thank and recognize the Girling family and Cranbrook Dodge for supporting cancer care in the East Kootenay and cancer research nationally. This A Clear View is EKFH’s largest campaign ever; to make a ¿nancial gift and learn more visit us at www.aclearview.ca.

DietSTART is a 14 day, 2 part kit that contains some of the most exciting weight loss ingredients on the market today, Svetol® and FraxiPure®. Diet Start is an ideal product for people beginning a weight loss program or anyone who would like to accelerate weight loss results. It is stimulant free so it will not cause jitters, anxiety, racing heart rate or nausea. DietSTART works to help you lose weight. DietStart works to release stored fat from the body’s fat cellls for energy, balance blood sugar levels (which can jelp control appetite), incresase lean muscle mass, and enhance elimination. The components of DietSTART, alter the sugar ingested from food. When we eat, our body converts digestible carbohydrates into blood sugar (glucose) our main source of energy. The ingredients in DietSTART, inhibit both the absorption of excess sugar by the kidneys and intestine as well as the production of sugar by the liver. This in turn lowers blood sugar concentration and insulin output. By maintaining healthy blood sugar levels the body will look to the fat stored in our adipose tissues for energy and that leads to weight loss. Research also shows that Svetol® will reduce the size of fat cells within our adipose tissue. This positively changes body composition and metabolism by increasing the muscle to fat ratio. DietSTART contains an evening colon support formula to help enhance elimination. It works to ensure that you are eliminating regularly. This is important for people who are overweight or obese as the tend to hold onto excess water and fecal matter. By eliminating regularly, your body can shed between 2-10 pounds of excess fecal matter and water. While this is not technically ‘burning fat’, it goes a long way to helping lose weight, reshape the body, and losing inches off your frame.

City RCMP searching for a hit and run driver

Fire at transfer station started with garbage

Submitted The Cranbrook RCMP are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying a ‘Hit and Run’ driver who caused a 18 year old cyclist to crash his bike and break his arm. On the 17th day of July 2012 at approximately 8:19 in the morning the Cranbrook RCMP were called to the intersection of 1st St S and 9th Ave S in which a cyclist had crashed his bike and broken his arm. The re-

sulting police investigation determined that the 18 year old cyclist had been riding westbound on 9th Ave S, in a lawful manner, when a beige Jeep travelling north on 1st street S. drove through the intersection without stopping for the stop sign. The cyclist was forced to brake hard, which catapulted him over the handlebars and onto the road. Luckily the cyclist was wearing a helmet which limited his injuries to a broken arm, requiring surgery

to repair, undetermined hand injuries and a bad case of road-rash. The offending vehicle was described as a beige colour Jeep. The cyclist was taken to the hospital where he was treated and released. The police investigation determined that there was a blondehaired woman near the intersection at the time, who would have seen the accident. The Cranbrook RCMP are requesting that this person, or anyone else call the detachment with

any information they may have. The Cranbrook RCMP would like to remind cyclists to wear their approved helmets when out on the roads and be aware of the traf¿c around them. The motorists are asked to drive with care and to watch for pedestrians. Drivers are reminded that they also share the road with cyclists. Riding a bicycle on city streets may be a great way to get around but it can also be dangerous if fellow road

users are not paying attention. Handlebar or helmet-mounted mirrors are other good safety measures. If anyone has any additional information about this or any other crime they can call the Cranbrook RCMP at 250-489-3471 or East Kooteney Crimestoppers (1-800-222-TIPS) You can also “Google” Cranbrook Crimestoppers and leave a webtip

FERNIE ROD & GUN CLUB 2012

Submitted Clean up efforts are underway this morning after a ¿re last night at the Cranbrook Transfer Station. “The Cranbrook Fire Department responded just before 8 p.m. last night to a ¿re in a load of garbage in the transfer station building,” explains RDEK Communications Manager, Loree Duczek. “They were able to contain the ¿re to the trailer and with help from the site contractor, then spread out the load and water it down completely to ensure there were no remaining hot spots.” Although the damage to the building itself appears to be minimal, the power is off and an electrical assessment will be completed to-

day before the building is reopened to the public. “The transfer station is open; however, we will be directing the public to use drop bins for their household garbage until we’re able to re-open the building,” explains Duczek. “If people are able to wait a day or two before bringing their garbage in, that would be great, but we are able to accommodate them.” City of Cranbrook trucks will be hauling directly to the Central Subregion Land¿ll. The ¿re started in garbage that had been loaded in the back of a trailer. The trailer sustained extensive damage and the cause of the ¿re is unknown.

Climber dies after falling Submitted On August 8, Golden RCMP received a call from Parks Canada stating that they had a report that two mountain climbers had fallen on Mt. Rogers, in Glacier National Park and one was deceased. RCMP con¿rms that a father and son, ages 52 and 22, from 108 mile Ranch, BC, were descending Mt. Rogers when they slipped in the snow. They slid approximately 100m on the snow before falling approximately 10m over a bergschrund. The son survived and managed to contact help. The father was deceased and remained on the mountain until Parks Canada Search and Rescue could safely remove him this morning. The names of the climbers are not being released.

School Districts 5 and 6 are urgently looking for homestay families throughout the East Kootenay to host late applicants for the school year starting in September. Most available students are from Germany, Mexico and Brazil, will be studying in Grades 7 to 12, and will be staying either for one semester or one school year. We encourage emptynester parents or any family to consider hosting two students from different countries. Such double placements are consistently very successful. The Eden called Kaleden

La Dolce Vita By Lorne Eckersley

In all honesty, it was the Bead Trail that took us of Highway 97 and down into Kaleden, with two wineries as our destinations. A current Okanagan business promotion has beads for sale at participating businesses, and my wife is a jewellery hobbyist, so we left the beaten path in chase of a couple more samples. Our ¿rst stop was the new and tiny Top Shelf Winery, which has a distinct hockey theme. From the mural at the front of the property to the memorabilia in the tasting room, it is clear that this is a hockeymad family. No surprise there, after we learned that winery owners Len and Myrna are parents of former NHL defencemen Joel Kwiatkowski, who now plays professionally in Switzerland. Myrna is the winemaker, a prairie gal who learned the ropes at Okaganan University College. She and Len ¿rst semi-retired from Saskatchewan to the Sunshine Coast, where they operated a lodge. Then they purchased the property in Kaleden and embarked on a winery adventure. We enjoyed our chat while we tasted our way through Slapshot Chardonnay, Point Shot Pinot Gris and Over the Top Merlot, each nicely made. Myrna insisted

on providing samples of Village Cheese with each and we left the winery with bottles and a selection of the Armstrong fromagerie’s products. Next stop was Kraze Legz. No, not Crazylegs, as in legendary pro footballer Elroy Hirsch, but Kraze Legz, as in the comment that someone made when noting the alcohol “legs” that the wine left inside the glass. Kraze Legz is the love child of Sue and Gerry Thygesen, who not only make very good wine, but are proving to be extremely accomplished marketers. The names of their new releases, served in what they refer to as their “speakeasy”, are Lindy Hop (a white blend), Whisper Sister (a semi-sweet dessert wine), Speakeasy Rosé, Cake Walk (Merlot) and All That Jazz (a red blend). You might detect a Roaring 20s theme here, don’t you think? The aptly named Kaleden is often referred to as a Garden of Eden and its location on Skaha Lake, north of Okanagan Falls, seems to be ideal for vineyards. Kraze Legz’s Charlston Chardonnay, for example was named one of the two best unoaked Chardonnays by Wine Access in the Canadian Wine Awards, and fruit quality is paramount in any unoaked wine. I was especially impressed to learn that the

Thygesens even created their wine labels (the bottles feature painted, not paper, labels) in house, because they are extremely professional, each carrying the theme nicely. It’s great to visit a winery that has a theme that suits the owners and in this case, it is obvious that Sue and Gerry are having a blast with it. They refer to their winery as “a throwback to simpler times when the decade was roaring, the music was jazzed and dancing required kraze legs.” A theme will only take you so far, though, with the real proof being in the bottle. Throughout our tasting I commented that the wines had a consistent style—fresh, clean and with a very pleasant, almost creamy, mouth feel. These are wines that can as easily be quaffed on the patio as they can be matched with food. As we returned to our Highway 97 route, bottles from The Top Shelf and Kraze Legz safely stored in the car’s hatchback and with Angela examining her bead purchases, we agreed that our diversion into Kaleden had been an unexpected treat. Our best memories are often of small wineries where we get to meet and chat with the owners and we hadn’t been at all disappointed with either of our visits.

Cranbrook Rodeo is part of both the Duane Daines Saddle Bronc Series and the Kenton Randle Bareback Series. When cowboys enter a Series rodeo, their score at that rodeo will be the number of points they receive. All cowboys who compete in the event will receive 25 points just for competing. As these scores carry over into other Series rodeos so it is extremely important that a competitor do well every time. Because of this many riders, ropers and other participants maintain a tough training regimen throughout the entire year. One Head Rodeos: 25 points for competing plus their score (all contestants) Example: 25 points for competing and score of 85 = 110 points

Long Go, Short Go: 25 points for competing plus long go score (all contestants) Example: 25 points for competing plus a long go score of 80 = 105 points. No series points for ¿nal or bonus round.

Pro Rodeo Association are followed. Calves, for example, have to be at least 300 pounds and weaned from their mothers. The animals cannot be treat-

ed with unnecessary roughness or the cowboy will be disquali¿ed. Both calves and steers also get a 12 foot head start on the cowboy and riders are given a 10

second penalty if they break the barrier prematurely. Because of these rules, pro rodeo events have been gaining popularity over the years.

Well-treated animals and extremely talented athletes will make sure that rodeos only get bigger and better in years to come.

Animal behaviorist Dr. Andrew McLean will be coming to Cranbrook in October to spread his scienti¿c training principles. est Australian Science award, the Eureka Prize. He has written several books, and is a rider who has competed internationally. Horse Council BC, the BC provincial equestrian organization, invited Dr. McLean to speak at their 2012 conference. He holds equine learning seminars worldwide: Australia, USA, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa and Europe. Dr. McLean’s training methods are based on scienti¿c principles. For example, he trains using the removal of pressure or discomfort when the horse gives the correct response. His methods avoid nagging, inescapable pain and fear as these interfere with equine learning. Dr. McLean promotes progressive step by step training with clear aids and stresses that a good start is most important. Dr McLean’s AEBC foundation training program, based on how your horse learns, was developed through years of research and experience. Dr. McLean will be presenting in Cranbrook on Oct 25 and 26, 2012. For more information contact Arlene 250 489 5923 or sprucetreeranch@ xplornet.ca .

(From left) Sheila Tutty (Invermere’s Face of the Campaign), Donna Grainger (EKFH Executive Director) accept a cheque of $13,050 from President Harold Hazelaar of the Lake Windermere District Lions Club. Submitted During a recent visit to the Lions Clubs International website, East Kootenay Foundation for Health’s Donna Grainger found words that most appropriately described the latest A Clear View donation of $13,050 by the Lake Windermere District Lions Club. This group of dedicated men and women of the Lions are known to support many worthwhile projects throughout the year but it’s their Charity Golf Day when the Lake Windermere

District Lions really shine. The annual event , held July 17 at the Copper Point Golf Course, saw members of the Lions and over 30 volunteers greeting players, taking team photos, watching for hole in ones and being ambassadors for this year’s chosen cause; the A Clear View ~ digital mammography campaign. Lions’ President, Harold Hazelaar shares, “This piece of equipment is of critical importance to many individuals living here in the Columbia Valley and throughout

the East Kootenay. Our Club and its members are thrilled to support a campaign that will impact the lives of those facing a breast cancer diagnosis. Volunteers supporting the Lions’ effort came from the Cranbrook Health Care Auxiliary (the ¿rst and largest leadership gift of $250,000 for the campaign), the Invermere Health Care Auxiliary ($50,000 leadership gift), the Edgewater/Radium Health Care Auxiliary ($500 support gift) and the Windermere Health Care Auxiliary (gift pending their August 25 charity golf tournament) and East Kootenay Foundation for Health. In return for the help, the Lake Windermere District Lions Club not only blessed EKFH and the East Kootenay Regional Hospital’s mammography campaign with a $13,050 donation, it recognized the efforts of the Invermere & Windermere Health Care Auxiliaries for their work at the Invermere Hospital by presenting them each with a $500 donation. FORD (BC)

Tons of torque and sporty style European style with added horsepower on the 2012 Focus mark the fuel efficient 2012 Nissan

PHOTO SUBMITTED

PHOTO SUBMITTED

The stylish 2012 Focus added more horsepower and torque from the 2011 model.

The sporty Nissan Titan ably rides the line between fuel economy and power for those who like to have it all.

Overall: Ford’s new mainstream compact will be a treat for anyone who appreciates an ef¿ciently packaged car with European Àavour. Drivetrain: 160-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder connected to a ¿ve-speed manual transmission or optional twinclutch automated manual; allelectric drivetrain also to be offered. Over here is the new Focus. Over there is the old Focus. No . . . there is no resemblance. And parked alongside its Fiesta relation, the Focus looks positively aggressive with its wide-open-mouth air intake and more planted stance. But for those who just can’t get with the sleek-looking hatchback, the sedan offers a more conservative silhouette. It’s also the only style available if you order the price-leader “S” that comes with manual climate control, tilt and tele-

Overall: Nissan’s longserving full-size pickup offers plenty of style, excellent road manners and a throaty engine growl, but with the ¿erce competition in this bracket its time for an update; new Sport Appearance Package added for 2012. Drivetrain: There’s nothing quite like the exhaust rumble of the Titan’s 317-horsepower 5.6-litre V8, but giving away 60 horsepower to the competition and having a 16.1/10.9 (city/ highway) l/100 km rating for 4x2 models? While the big, tough Titan was designed with North American tastes in mind, Nissan has been hard-pressed to capture big sales numbers in this segment. And with the competition’s focus on fuel economy, it’s now time for Nissan to address the Titan’s

scopic steering wheel and basic four-speaker audio system and 15-inch steel wheels. The SE sedan and hatchback add Ford’s Sync voice-activated communications and entertainment system plus some minor interior/exterior upgrades, while SEL versions improve on the basics with a six-speed automated manual transmission, dual-zone climate control, ambient lighting and 16-inch alloy wheels. The top-rung Titanium’s full-load content includes touch-screen audio and climate controls, push-button start, 10-speaker Sony sound system and a sport-tuned suspension with 17-inch wheels. On the options list are leather-covered seats, power sunroof, navigation system, rear-view camera and active park assist that will actually take over the parallel-parking chores for you. The standard 2.0-litre

four-cylinder engine is rated at 160 horsepower and 146 pound-feet of torque, which is 20 more horses and 10 more pound-feet of torque than the 2011 2.0-litre Focus engine. A ¿ve-speed manual transmission is standard on all models, while optional is a six-speed dual-clutch automated manual gearbox that conserves fuel by delivering lightning-quick gear changes. All models arrive with torque vectoring, which is a system that applies light braking pressure to slow down the inside wheel when the car is turning. This helps the Focus attack the corners with more precision by reducing the tendency to plow straight ahead (referred to as understeer). In the works is an electric Focus that features a 93-kilowatt (123-horsepower) motor and lithium-ion battery pack.

fossil-fuel consumption. Titan makes an appeal to hardworking individuals with two frame lengths and two choices in bed length, ending at 8’2”. The bigger box is only offered on extended-cab models and not the four-door Titans. From the outside, the Titan mimics the dimensions and attitude of its domestic rivals and attempts to match them under the hood with an all-aluminum 317-horsepower 5.6-litre V8. That might be well shy of what Dodge, GM and Toyota deliver, but perhaps more important than peak horsepower numbers is the torque, as in close to 400 pound-feet of it, most of which is available from just 2,500 rpm. That helps the Titan tow up to 4,320 kilograms. Two cab styles are offered: extended King Cab (with a pair of reverse

opening rear access doors that swing 180 degrees); and a four-door Crew Cab. Both two- or four-wheeldrive versions are available. There’s enough interior room to hold ¿ve tall adults with front and rear legroom that’s practically identical. Interior amenities include a choice of bench or bucket seats as well as adjustable foot pedals. Four-wheel disc brakes with anti-lock are standard as well as side-impact and side-curtain airbags and rearproximity sensors that alert you when your backup path is blocked. Back for more is the off-road-inspired PRO4X model that comes with a lower ¿nal drive ratio, unique wheels wrapped in off-road rubber, additional skid plates to protect the Titan’s underbelly and electronic-locking rear differential.

walk-in closets with folding or sliding doors, and either permanent or moveable installations. Cupboards can be integrated into furniture, free-standing stairs can be incorporated under the steps, and stacked cupboards, mini-cupboards, and made-tomeasure cupboards can be adapted to just about any con¿guration. Modular magnetic storage systems allow the placement of shelves to be modi¿ed quickly and easily, depending on your needs. Practical and aesthetic, these shelves are held in place by magnets and are interchangeable in many different ways: they can be straight or leaning, jointed or separate, staggered or tight¿tting. Cupboards, closets, drawers, and shelves can be installed not only in corridors, entrance halls, bedrooms, and under stairs, but also in kitchens and bathrooms.

Copper is back in style With the rise in popularity of raw materials and the return of the industrial style in home decorating, we are ¿nding whole new ways to use copper in our homes this year. This season’s copper tones are to be found in designer accessories such as lamps, vases, stools, and mirrors. These objects will blend perfectly with both classic and designer styles. Combined with black or white, the result is a clean and uncluttered look, even if copper inspires memories of medieval times. The effect is a resounding success, even when transposed to the most modern of styles. Coppery metals used in interior architecture and decoration are usually copper, brasses, or gilts, all of which have been ¿nished by being polished, brushed, sanded, or bead blasted. Use a special cleaning solution that slows corrosion and allows for longer intervals between cleanings.
