spectacular show from mother nature rolled over Ladner, Tsawwassen and many other parts of the Lower Mainland Tuesday evening (Aug. 7), with lightning forks zigzagging across the sky and thunder booming a warning to stay indoors.

Those who looked out their window got a pretty clear view of the sky since the storm showed up without very much wind or rain.

Tsawwassen resident and radio voice of Vancouver Whitecaps FC, Peter Schaad, tweeted, "Amazing. It was fun watching it come in, then it swirled around Boundary Bay for hours. The cat is still hiding!"

The storm started to roll in from over the water around 7 p.m. with lightning strikes causing pockets of power outages throughout the region.

Jennifer Young, a spokeswoman for BC Hydro, said complaints of outages started coming in around midnight, resulting in 400 homes in Delta without power, but they were mainly east of Hwy. 91.

Delta Police are recommending a charge of bodily harm following the report of an assault Tuesday (Aug. 7) in the 1600 block of Tsawwassen Drive North.

According to Delta Police the victim said she sustained an injury to her eye after allegedly being punched in the face by a suspect known to her.

DPD investigators located the suspect and took her into custody without incident, then transported her to police headquarters in Ladner.

Delta cop dismissed after sex with woman involved in domestic dispute DPD, Delta and police chief named in suit ADRIAN MACNAIR REPORTER

A North Delta woman is suing the municipality, the Delta Police Department (DPD) and a police officer, alleging his "predatory" behaviour in beginning an extra-marital affair with her after responding to a domestic dispute at her house.

According to the civil claim filed with the Supreme Court of British Columbia on Aug. 7, Tori Jones called police to her home in the 11800-block of 85B Avenue on July 26, 2010, following a marital argument with her common-law partner, Josh Van Polanen Petel.

Robert Wesley Johnston, one of the officers who arrived, gave Jones a business card with his name, personal cell phone number, and email address, advising her to seek legal counsel, and seek custody of their two-year-old son.

He further said Jones should call him if she had any further problems with Petel and he would "personally deal with him."

Shortly after this night, court documents allege a wild affair began at Johnston's behest, resulting in sexual liaisons while on duty, including one incident at a K9 police station on Annacis Island.

Jones and Johnston began communicating via cell phone and text message two days after the domestic call, and on July 31, he allegedly met Jones in the underground parking lot of the Superstore on Scott Road and 82nd Ave. where he committed sexual assault and battery on her.

Later that same day he met her near the Home Depot store in Surrey and had her follow his police cruiser to a remote location on Faulkner Rd. He then opened his uniform pants and committed a sexual assault and battery on Jones.

Then on Aug. 1, Johnston enlisted the help of Delta police Const.

Jason Martens to "stand six" (be a lookout) while he led Jones into the Delta Police K9 office where he again committed a sexual assault and battery.

It's also alleged Johnston allowed Jones to read confidential police files, including one about a young male who had been killed, but that

it was "nothing to be sad about because the deceased was a criminal."

Johnston then led Jones to work from Annacis Island, reaching speeds of 106.9 km/h across the Alex Fraser Bridge (maximum posted speed is 90 km/h) and up to 122 km/h on the Richmond Connector.

Court documents say Johnston told Martens about the sexual assault and battery later that day.

The next day (Aug. 2), Johnston and Jones met for dinner at Sammy J Peppers in Surrey at 9 p.m., where documents allege Johnston committed a sexual assault on Jones while sitting in the restaurant

Later that night he again committed sexual assault at Jones' house—Petel was living with his father at this point—and turned off his Mobile Data Terminal in his police cruiser so he wouldn't be disturbed. They were interrupted

by Petel's stepfather, however, and fearing it could jeopardize his job, Johnston allegedly put his uniform back on and left from the back door of the house.

Six days later (Aug. 8), Johnston took Jones and her two-year-old son to the Denny's restaurant on the 8600-block of Scott Road. He then took the two to Annieville Park where he committed a sexual assault and battery on Jones, before bringing his police dog from his cruiser and showing Jones and her son its attacking skills on a protective padded sleeve.

The sexual assault allegations continue in the writ details of the court documents, including an iPhone text message that included a semi-nude photographs of Johnston while in uniform. He also

shared a naked picture of Jones with a fellow constable.

After this 17-day period, Jones claims she was overwhelmed and distraught by his advances, unable to eat or sleep properly, and solely drank Red Bull, a caffeinated drink.

When Johnston went on vacation late in the summer of 2010, Jones texted him that she didn't want to see him anymore. He did not respond and she never heard from him again.

After telling Petel about the affair, he filed a complaint with police.

Johnston was suspended with pay on Oct. 18, 2010, and later changed to suspension without pay on March 23, 2011.

An outside police investigation found three allegations of corrupt practice, two allegations of discreditable conduct and one allegation of neglect of duty against Johnston had been proven and it was determined that Johnston should be dismissed.

That investigation included a report from Deborah Sinclair, a registered social worker, who wrote that Johnston's "preoccupation with sex and his predatory behaviour towards women earned him nicknames as 'the predator' and 'Kilo 69.'"

Petel claims he was forced to go on short-term disability from his then-employer due to mental anxiety, stress, and depression, which ultimately led to his dismissal.

Jones is suing Johnston for general, aggravated, exemplary and punitive damages. The Corporation of Delta, the DPD and its chief are also named on the claim.

Police spokesman Const. Ciaran Feenan said the department is respectful of the civil process and can't comment on the specific allegations.

"What we can speak to is the fact that when those allegations were made the Delta Police Department acted immediately," he said, adding the DPD is a value-based leadership agency that doesn't condone that type of activity.

No response has been filed to the civil claim and the allegations contained in the suit have not been proven in court. reporter@southdeltaleader.com

ven before the sign went up on the building, Corey Hanna knew he'd made the right choice in coming to Ladner.

It was weeks before the new Scotiabank branch was open for business at the renovated location at Ladner Trunk Rd. and CenPhilip tral Ave. and Raphael people passing by would try the doors to see if they could enter the premises and do their banking.

Hanna, manager of the new branch, says it was clear to him there was a pent up demand for the services locally, and the official May 28 opening day couldn't come too soon for many.

"I was surprised by the amount of foot traffic we had in the first week," says Hanna. "It was a pleasant surprise. There were a lot of people who couldn't wait one more day for us to be here (open)."

Many were long-time Scotiabank customers who were glad they now had a local option rather than having to commute to Tsawwassen or Richmond to do their banking.

"They were really happy to see a branch in their own backyard," says Hanna, 27, who grew up in Cloverdale and attended Holy Cross secondary school in the Fleetwood area of Surrey.

Hanna is happy to be back in the Lower Mainland after spending the early part of his career in Penticton and Kamloops.

While that allowed him to fast-track his progress with the bank, the draw of family is what lured him to take up the post in South Delta.

"I was very excited to come home," he says. "That was one of the biggest things for me and my family. We'd been away from the Lower Mainland for five years and we had this chance to get our two daughters closer to their grandparents."

The fact that the move came with the opportunity to manage a new, "fromthe-ground-up" branch was also a big plus.

"Not a lot of new (Scotiabank) branches are opened up—maybe one or two every year in B.C.," Hanna says.

"So, to get the opportunity to come in and hand-pick your staff and really build a branch from nothing is quite the unique experience not many managers get to have."

Since opening Hanna says he is quickly getting to know the community.

And the community in turn is becoming familiar with the staff—about half of them call South Delta home—and the fact the branch has the only drive-thru ABM in town.

With the branch up and running Hanna says he is looking forward to hosting an official grand opening event Sept. 6, complete with a party featuring an appearance by the B.C. Lions Grey Cup winning quarterback Travis Lulay.

High-ranking female Delta politicians were on hand when B.C. Premier Christy Clark came to town last Friday (Aug. 3) for a women’s only luncheon at the Delta Town & Country Inn. Delta Mayor Lois Jackson and Tsawwassen First Nation Chief Kim Baird were among the attendees at the event hosted by the Delta Chamber of Commerce.

“It’s nice to be here in Delta where women are running the show with Mayor Jackson...” Clark said in her opening remarks. “We are taking over, ladies, I hope you know.”

Billed as a women’s town hall meeting, Clark reassured the audience of approximately 40 local businesswomen and a handful of community activists that there were no men in the room.

“We kick all the men out,” said Clark. "[We] have gotten rid of the male server and everything. Because I notice conversations happen differently when it’s just women in the room.”

Before taking quest i o n s, C l a rk t o u t e d the BC Liberal party’s achievements including a 40 per cent drop in business taxes, 30 per cent drop in personal taxes since 2001 and a job creation record that is second only to Alberta nationwide.

“For me the important thing is to ground those statistics in the reason why they matter,” said Clark. “A strong economy builds strong community.”

She concluded her

introductory remarks by singling out DCC chair Kelly Guichon, who is seeking the Liberal nomination for Delta South.

“Kelly has been one of those glue guys that knits this community together for years and years and years,” said Clark. “People in Delta all know that when something needs to be done—and it’s going to be hard and it’s going to take a long time—phone Kelly Guichon, because she will say yes.”

Jackson kicked off the question period by talking about traffic congestion and the projected growth for Delta, Surrey and White Rock.

“I also have to get a plug in for the Massey Tunnel,” Jackson told Clark.

On the subject of road safety, the premier commended Jackson for her appointment of Delta Police Chief Jim Cessford, calling him “probably one of the best police chiefs anywhere in the country”.

Clark was expected to meet later this afternoon with Cessford to discuss local policing issues.

Heather Colls from Mothers Against Power Poles stood up to take Clark to task on the longstanding issue of upgrading power lines that run through Tsawwassen.

“We all know [former B.C. Premier] Gordon Campbell broke several of the promises,” Colls said. “We are going to continue to ensure that whatever political party gets into power continues to protect the children of South Delta.”

While appreciating her dedication to making her cause known, Clark told Colls, “I think

Colls, a local teacher, also aired her other bone of contention: the Liberal government’s cuts to education.

Clark responded by citing the $200 million the government has set aside for a learning fund, LIFT, to support children who have additional needs in classrooms beginning in September.

There were six or so questions asked during the hour-long session Friday. One of the last came from a Delta businesswoman who told Clark about her struggle to a retain employees with great skill sets because of the commute.

“After they have sat in the [Massey] tunnel for an hour and a half trying to get home — 10, 15, 20 days in a row. And it’s been a growing issue,” the woman said. "These

traffic issues have stunted our growth here in Delta.”

Sh e i s c o n c e r n e d about the use of inters e ctio ns ins te a d o f interchanges along the River Road portion of the South Fraser Perimeter Road, saying her employees are questioning if they will be sitting in traffic once again.

“Message received,” said Clark.

Prior to heading into the luncheon, the premier stopped briefly to address the throng of reporters waiting outside.

Clark was asked about the significant rise in spending in the premier’s office that included dining out at some of Vancouver’s plush restaurants.

Outdoor movie night celebrates Queen's Jubilee with a serving of British treats at Diefenbaker Park What's more British than a "jacket potato?"

Both will happen Saturday night (Aug. 11) at Diefenbaker Park when the Business Improvement Association of Tsawwassen hosts its second Outdoor Movie Night of the summer.

The event not only features a great Disney animated movie on the screen (regulations prohibit print media from publishing titles of publicly shown films) it also celebrates Queen Elizabeth's Diamond Jubilee.

To help mark the occasion in British culinary style, the Tsawwassen Boundary Bay Lions Club will be serving up jacket (baked) potatoes that will come with all the special fixings—from sour cream and bacon bits, to chives and even a side of good old fashioned baked beans.

Compared to last year, wind energy’s contribution in the UK

was up nearly 50 per cent, proving the value of wind energy as a renewable energy resource for the UK and leading some to suggest that Britain is poised to become the Saudi Arabia of offshore wind.

All in all, if this green energy trend in the UK continues, renewable energy may ultimately prove to be greatest legacy of Queen Elizabeth’s long, popular and successful reign.

Even casual sports fans will be drawn to watching the thrill of victory and agony of defeat featured on prime time television during the 2012 London Summer Olympics.

And it’s quite the spectacle.

Athletes who normally don’t get this type of audience or following in fringe sports such as synchronized diving and weight lifting, will get their Andy Warhol 15 minutes of fame. Well deserved, unquestionably.

But viewers need to remember the countless hours of dedication it takes to reach this pinnacle of achievement.

To make it to the Olympics is often once-ina-lifetime.

To win a medal, that much more amazing.

To win gold, priceless.

But to get there, plenty of blood, sweat, tears and dollars need to be shed in the name of sport.

There’s something about untarnished and innocent amateur sports that sets it apart. Sure, professionals like NBA basketball players, tennis players and soccer players are the exception.

But for the most part, the Olympics aren’t about millionaires trying to one-up one another.

The Olympics is about coming together in the name of sport and testing the limits of human achievement, about gathering for an opportunity for an out-of-body-like experience during a contest for gold. But it wouldn’t happen without grassroots support.

Every single athlete who competes at the Olympics was once a child, an unwritten book, and unpolished athlete, a diamond in the rough. Who knows who Canada's future Olympians will be.

They could be hatched simply from the experience of watching the 2012 Summer Games in London, or perhaps watching the B.C. Summer Games here in B.C. And that’s where the investment of dollars and cents can make an invaluable difference.

Supporting amateur sports isn’t about the immediate payoff; it’s about the long-term investment that will grow over time, perhaps in rare instances developing into a world-class athlete, but almost always into well-adjusted, healthy and happy human beings.

It’s a long-term approach, one that takes vision and leadership.

If a gift to the joint tenant is intended, evidence will be required to ensure the joint account funds do not form part of the deceased parent’s estate under what is known in law as a “Resulting Trust.” That evidence may take the form of helpful estate planning tools known as a “Deed of Gift” and a “Memorandum of Wishes” which we will describe in future columns.

Unintended financial consequences of placing one’s assets in joint tenancy with adult children include exposing that asset to the claims of the adult child’s creditors, like former spouses in the event of a divorce.

If the adult child

already has a principal residence, becoming a registered owner to a second property can engage the Income Tax Act. A taxable capital gain may be triggered when the parent’s house is ultimately sold. If the parent’s house is rented out, taxable income may be attributable to the adult child.

In summary, before transferring assets into joint tenancy with a child or any other person, it is prudent to take steps and formally set out your true intentions and expectations to help avoid future expensive and protracted court proceedings. This will increase the chances that your intentions and estate planning wishes will be carried out as you want and not how others may decide for you after you are no longer here to speak.

W

hen John Meier says he went through quite a route to get here, he's making an understatement.

The middle-aged man behind Tsawwassen Town Centre's unassuming hot dog stand has experienced a hundred people's share of misfortune and success, yet his story stands alone.

Meier was born in Flushing, New York, which unravels the mystery of how an iconic slice of the Big Apple—Nathan's Famous frankfurters—arrived in Tsawwassen.

"They are so juicy, absolutely delicious," describes Meier. "I'm addicted to the bloody things."

His summer diet consists of eating four or five hot dogs a week. And it could just be an anomaly, the result of Meier's early exposure to food cart cuisine on the East Coast. But at a recent physical his doctor said his cholesterol levels were really good.

It's a clean bill of health for this eccentric character who started amassing adult-sized stress as a teenager. Meier didn't choose the laid-back Tsawwassen life, his family was

forced to live in Canada. And this area was the closest climate fit for a family who arrived here by way of Southern California, Las Vegas and Australia. They were unimpressed by West Vancouver, which bested Delta in the rain deluge contest.

"Since I've lived up here I've had no desire to live in California," says Meier. "We live in paradise, I really love this area."

Paradise amid chaos Paradise for the Meiers was found in the midst of chaos. Equipped with an aerospace engineering background, his father, John Meier Sr. had been a scientific advisor to billionaire aviator, motion-picture producer and business tycoon Howard Hughes.

That status catapulted Meier Sr. to an equally illustrious life by association. Heads of state, those basking in the top echelon of the world's wealth, and celebrities were among his friends.

News reports of the day referred to Meier Sr. as Hughes' right-hand man—and the man who brought down Richard Nixon.

"We had to come up here [to Canada], dad witnessed a million dollar payoff to Nixon," explains the younger Meier. "They wanted my

father assassinated."

Leading up to the 1972 Presidential election, Meier allegedly fed misinformation to Nixon's camp by saying he released documents to the Democrats revealing Nixon's illicit dealings with Hughes—the precursor to the Watergate scandal and Nixon's subsequent resignation as President.

In 1979, Meier Sr. was arrested after returning from a beach outing with his family – and extradited to the U.S. to face fraud and obstruction of justice charges relating to a $20 million mining transaction in California and Nevada.

He was sentenced to 30 months in prison, serving 21 months.

A teenager at the time, John Jr.—who played father figure to his two sisters and brother while their dad was incarcerated—doesn't think about those days that often. But he admits that experience has helped shape his character.

"I think probably my perspective on things is different than most people," he says.

Preserving Canadian literature Meier Jr. is hoping to be publicly recognized in the near future, through an honourary doctorate, for his efforts to preserve celebrated Canadian literature.

In Meier's basement, stored on shelves in special bookcases that block out damaging light, sits the completed collection of first English language editions of the Governor General’s Literary Award for Fiction dating back to the inception of the prize in 1937.

The president of the W.A. Deacon Literary Foundation, Meier has organized national tours of these works, spending hundreds of thousands of his own dollars to share his labour of love.

The collection, compiled over a decade, includes uncorrected proofs, trial dust jackets, advance review copies, author copies, letters and sound recordings—most of it signed.

A huge amount of leg work was exercised in order for Meier to build his literary masterpiece.

He contacted more than 50 publishers, sent 2,000 to 3,000 emails—and scoured secondhand book stores and antique shops all over the world.

He went to the ends of the earth for GG Award winner Franklin D. McDowell's copy, with author's notes, of The Champlain Road.

"I basically tracked the family down," explains Meier, adding it took six months to negotiate the deal.

son was impressed after viewing the literary splendour in person.

However, that endorsement hasn't led to any financial support from the Canadian government to help Meier display his collection publicly.

"Canadian Heritage has told me to stop promoting Canadian literature and culture and give my rare book collections away," says an incensed Meier. "The literary arts are insignificant in this country—there is just no interest. I find it so mind boggling."

Still, Meier plans to press on with his efforts to mark the 75th anniversary of the Governor General's literary prize with an exhibit at the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library in Toronto this November. However, he will need the support of the community, he says.

"I need to raise enough money to ship the books back and forth in custom-made containers," he explains.

To that end, Meier plans to host an intimate dinner fundraiser, for bookish types, at his house sometime in the fall. He also leverages his lucrative hot dog stand to help feed the cause. Like any best-selling author, Meier has found his hook.

East Coast cravings Perhaps it's East Coast transplants craving nostalgia from back home or first-timers devouring a traditional frankfurter—possible explanations for the frenzy around Meier's food cart around mid-day Thursdays through Sundays.

Word of Myrtle's Famous Hot Dogs—homage to Meier's grandmother who took him to Coney Island for his first Nathan's dog when he was four-years-old—has even spread to Southern California. Meier recently met a San Diego man at his cart who made a special detour to Tsawwassen while on business in Vancouver.

Others compare eating Meier's hot dogs to a religious experience, bringing their friends by to be converted. Some customers have also learned the hard way to show up early or be disappointed when Meier—who has sold as many as 400 hot dogs in a day— runs out of meat. They cringe when offered vegetarian dogs.

For all the attention he gets Meier remains modest, saying he is not re-inventing the wheel. Case in point, his Chicago dog topped with mustard, super green relish, a large dill pickle—in some cases almost as long as the bun—sweet onions, hot pepper, celery salt and tomato wedges.

"These are the classics I'm doing basically," says Meier.

The franchise word has come up, which is a discussion Meier is putting on the back burner until later this year.

"I'm still thinking about it," he says. "I'm trying to find people with the same personality type as me— outgoing and hard-working."

But he also alludes to doing something completely different at some point during the next decade—perhaps a childrens' novelist.

What Meier hopes to create is a literary and culinary legacy so up-and-coming readers can still touch paper instead of a screen when thumbing through the classics. Or maybe one day a Tsawwassenite will be at a food cart on the streets of Chicago or New York and see the "Delta" dog he has been busy perfecting.

"Obsession usually leads to something good," says Meier.

Leading up to the 1972 Presidential election, Meier allegedly fed misinformation to Nixon's camp by saying he released documents to the Democrats revealing Nixon's illicit dealings with Hughes—the precursor to the Watergate scandal and Nixon's subsequent resignation as President.

In 1979, Meier Sr. was arrested after returning from a beach outing with his family – and extradited to the U.S. to face fraud and obstruction of justice charges relating to a $20 million mining transaction in California and Nevada.

He was sentenced to 30 months in prison, serving 21 months.

A teenager at the time, John Jr.—who played father figure to his two sisters and brother while their dad was incarcerated—doesn't think about those days that often. But he admits that experience has helped shape his character.

"I think probably my perspective on things is different than most people," he says.

Preserving Canadian literature Meier Jr. is hoping to be publicly recognized in the near future, through an honourary doctorate, for his efforts to preserve celebrated Canadian literature.

In Meier's basement, stored on shelves in special bookcases that block out damaging light, sits the completed collection of first English language editions of the Governor General’s Literary Award for Fiction dating back to the inception of the prize in 1937.

The president of the W.A. Deacon Literary Foundation, Meier has organized national tours of these works, spending hundreds of thousands of his own dollars to share his labour of love.

The collection, compiled over a decade, includes uncorrected proofs, trial dust jackets, advance review copies, author copies, letters and sound recordings—most of it signed.

A huge amount of leg work was exercised in order for Meier to build his literary masterpiece.

He contacted more than 50 publishers, sent 2,000 to 3,000 emails—and scoured secondhand book stores and antique shops all over the world.

He went to the ends of the earth for GG Award winner Franklin D. McDowell's copy, with author's notes, of The Champlain Road.

"I basically tracked the family down," explains Meier, adding it took six months to negotiate the deal.

son was impressed after viewing the literary splendour in person.

However, that endorsement hasn't led to any financial support from the Canadian government to help Meier display his collection publicly.

"Canadian Heritage has told me to stop promoting Canadian literature and culture and give my rare book collections away," says an incensed Meier. "The literary arts are insignificant in this country—there is just no interest. I find it so mind boggling."

Still, Meier plans to press on with his efforts to mark the 75th anniversary of the Governor General's literary prize with an exhibit at the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library in Toronto this November. However, he will need the support of the community, he says.

"I need to raise enough money to ship the books back and forth in custom-made containers," he explains.

To that end, Meier plans to host an intimate dinner fundraiser, for bookish types, at his house sometime in the fall. He also leverages his lucrative hot dog stand to help feed the cause. Like any best-selling author, Meier has found his hook.

East Coast cravings Perhaps it's East Coast transplants craving nostalgia from back home or first-timers devouring a traditional frankfurter—possible explanations for the frenzy around Meier's food cart around mid-day Thursdays through Sundays.

Word of Myrtle's Famous Hot Dogs—homage to Meier's grandmother who took him to Coney Island for his first Nathan's dog when he was four-years-old—has even spread to Southern California. Meier recently met a San Diego man at his cart who made a special detour to Tsawwassen while on business in Vancouver.

Others compare eating Meier's hot dogs to a religious experience, bringing their friends by to be converted. Some customers have also learned the hard way to show up early or be disappointed when Meier—who has sold as many as 400 hot dogs in a day— runs out of meat. They cringe when offered vegetarian dogs.

For all the attention he gets Meier remains modest, saying he is not re-inventing the wheel. Case in point, his Chicago dog topped with mustard, super green relish, a large dill pickle—in some cases almost as long as the bun—sweet onions, hot pepper, celery salt and tomato wedges.

"These are the classics I'm doing basically," says Meier.

The franchise word has come up, which is a discussion Meier is putting on the back burner until later this year.

"I'm still thinking about it," he says. "I'm trying to find people with the same personality type as me— outgoing and hard-working."

But he also alludes to doing something completely different at some point during the next decade—perhaps a childrens' novelist.

What Meier hopes to create is a literary and culinary legacy so up-and-coming readers can still touch paper instead of a screen when thumbing through the classics. Or maybe one day a Tsawwassenite will be at a food cart on the streets of Chicago or New York and see the "Delta" dog he has been busy perfecting.

"Obsession usually leads to something good," says Meier.

Heart of Ladner returns to raise fund for Delta's hospice Harbourside Plaza night market set for Aug. 18 The streets of Ladner Village will soon again g l ow w i t h c o m m u nity goodwill at dusk as the Heart of Ladner night market makes a return after a one-year absence.

The event, which raises funds for the Delta Hospice Society, is scheduled for Aug. 18 from 4 to 9 p.m. at Harbourside Plaza on Delta Street. Organizers Michael Rudd and Ali Roddam are looking forward to staging the market which has elicited Ladner's strong sense of community from area businesses and residents keen to see its return.

The event took a break in 2011 as Roddam concentrated on raising her family.

But the memories from the previous one were still so strong it wasn't uncommon for people to enquire about

plans for this year's market.

"We've both had people come up to us on the street and say, 'We're so excited for the night market,'" said Roddam who owns Buttercups Children's Boutique.

"We're like, you know about that."

"A lot of people are more aware of it this time, and it's mostly been by word of mouth," added Rudd who owns and runs Open Space Yoga.

One of the driving forces this year was getting Budget Foods as a presenting sponsor on board.

"They are such a Ladner company. They have been around a long time, and a lot of people respect them," Rudd said. "So, it's a great fit for us."

In addition to the variety of vendors lining

of volunteers and 100 per cent of the profits go towards the hospice," Rudd said, adding plenty of assistance to keep that return intact comes from services donated by local businesses.

"Take, for example, the lighting. That's coming from Double R Rentals.

It's all really about giving back and not about spending money to make money."

This time out the event has also spread a little bit further across the street from the market at Billie's Barbershop where owner Adina Shore will be having her chairs staffed by local TV and movie celebrities who will be offering buzz cuts. Under the guidance of hair styling professionals they will provide a really close trim for $5.

the market will be the Upstart Crow which will host an Art in the Village show. And the Delta Hospice Society will have a tent set up and offer silent auction items.

"Generously, Century Group allow us to take over the (Harbourside Plaza) space. And the vendors are very welcoming to us. So are the (local) residents."

Last time out the market raised around $7,000.

"We're hoping to break that," Roddam said, adding the idea for the event came from the fact both her and Rudd's family had been touched by cancer and the hospice.

And they both wanted to find a way to contribute to the Ladner facility.

"A lot of these events that get put on as fund raisers, there's a huge cost for staffing. We put it on with a small group

Paddlers rewarded Abreast in a Boat wrap season with a silver medal The Ladner-based Abreast Deas Divas recently wrapped another successful season of dragon boating winning a silver medal at the recent Nanaimo regatta.

The Divas are one of six crews in Abreast In A Boat, a team of breast cancer survivors who dragon boat to maintain good health and to show that breast cancer survivors can lead full and active lives after diagnosis with this disease. Abreast Deas Divas paddle twice a week in the Deas slough from mid-March until mid-July and are easily recognizable in their bright pink jerseys and life jackets.

The crew attended four regattas during the season beginning with the Deep Cove Dash in April, False Creek Women’s regatta in May, Rio Tinto Alcan in

June and Nanaimo in July.

The silver medal was earned in the Breast Cancer challenge race with the Deas winning their heat and placing second amongst 11 breast cancer survivor crews. The Divas also won the Gold Division B final with their bestever time of two minutes 29 seconds to cap off the weekend.

This was the second year the crew attended the Nanaimo regatta which is a fund raiser for the Nanaimo Hospital foundation to purchase equipment in support of the breast cancer program in that region.

Bombay Joe's chicken curry signature dish dispenses with oil and packs in the flavour

When customers ask for some advice on what dish to try, Jas Boghar likes to steer them away from what seems to be the default choice at many Indian restaurants—butter chicken.

Not that there's anything wrong with that fine, creamy blend of spices and tomato that go into Bombay Joe's version that's served up in the Ladner Village eatery.

It's just that the signature dish Boghar and sister-in-law Pal Sidhu turn out from their location tucked away on Bridge Street—the address is actually listed as 1034841 Delta St.—is their family recipe for chicken curry. And they are keen to tell clients that not only is the meal packed full of authentic Indian flavours, it's also

a much healthier choice.

"We don't cook it with any oil or grease at all," Boghar says. "And a lot of people think that Indian food is all about oil and a lot of salt.

We don't like to do that. We do it differently, making it healthier and more home style."

So, how do you get around not using oil in the cooking process and still produce a meal customers will readily order again?

Boghar says that's easy.

"We just don't use oil," she says matter-of-factly. "Flavour lives in spices, not in oil. And we use nice, fresh spices instead of giving it a quick flavour with oil or butter."

The result is a fine, tasty meal that doesn't leave customers feeling uncomfortable and bloated.

"It's really a nice, light dish that goes well with a garlic naan. That's my personal preference," Boghar says laughing. "And we want people to know there's much more on the menu at an Indian restaurant than butter chicken, because that's actually a 'made-up dish' and is not a traditional Indian one. Traditionally, we're know for our vegetarian food."

But as the market dictates, butter chicken is the item most asked for and Bombay Joe's is pleased to include it on the menu.

Just don't be surprised that when you ask for some advice on ordering, it will not be the one that gets top billing.

Vancouver works with developers to create Downtown South

Revitalizing the Granville Loops The City of Vancouver has been working with developers such as Cressey Development to re-imagine the area around the Granville Street onramps into a thriving neighbourhood they call Downtown South. With plans for new roadways, biking and walking access to the Stanley Park SeaWall and False Creek waterfront and plenty of commercial space, the community will be the perfect place to purchase a home.

“It’s all that Downtown South has to offer,” says Cressey Development Manager David Evans. “There’s entertainment, shopping, the beach, the Seawall ... It provides access to all the amenities.”

Cressey is proud to be a part of the area with Maddox, a 32-storey condominium tower located on Howe and Drake streets.

The pedestrian-friendly aspect of the community is particularly important, Evans says.

“One of its biggest strengths is access,” he says. With Granville Island, Yaletown and Robson Street within easy reach, buyers who purchase in the area will find everything they could possibly imagine close by.

Future projects include a grocery store, the opportunity for vendors such as food carts and sidewalk extensions for outdoor cafes and restaurant patios.
