Pas Ka Poo Park’s main museum was the target of burglars. They stole just under $2,000 in cash that had been left in the locked building between 4 p.m. and 8 a.m., July 29 to 30; waiting for the Monday morning deposit. “Normally we don’t have that amount of cash,” said park administrator Cheryl Jones. The money was the cash float, proceeds from admissions, donations given to the park and proceeds collected by volunteers at the park’s concession. The museum would have received a Spirit grant from the Alberta government, matching the amount of the donations. The grant won’t be given without a proof of deposit, says Jones. The culprits broke in through one of the museum’s heavy metal doors. Jones says they’re secured now but may have to be replaced. The door is the museum’s emergency exit. It was bent during the burglary and is now hard to open. “It’s for public safety,” said Jones. The museum’s vintage cash register was broken into and damaged. It cannot be replaced. “At least they didn’t damage any of the artifacts,” said Jones. ‘We’re very thankful for that.” Rimbey RCMP investigates with assistance from a forensic identification unit. “We’re examining all evidence and looking into all possible leads,” said Sgt. Mark Groves. Pas Ka Poo has been hit with small-time vandalism such as chairs in the pool, broken flags and alcohol paraphernalia left on the grounds. One month ago one of the park’s memorial trees was broken. “It’s disheartening,” said Jones. However, changes have been made to the museum. Cash is no longer left overnight, nightly deposits are made. “This is a small blemish,” said Jones. “We’ve taken steps.”
