2012 PEACH FESTIVAL PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
WELCOME TO THE 65TH ANNUAL PENTICTON PEACH FESTIVAL
I
f you don’t have a good time at Peachfest... you’re not trying hard enough! An estimated 70,000 people will take part in Peach Festival as spectators, entertainers, square dancers, slowpitch players, aboriginal dancers, sandcastle builders, vendors, royalty and volunteers. Two groups of people make it possible for Penticton to host the largest free festival in Western Canada... the volunteers and sponsors. Volunteers are onsite from 6 a.m. til after midnight performing a wide variety of duties from traffic control to manning the information booth to picking up garbage. The volunteers include the Board of Directors. Our volunteer directors meet, and plan, year-round to ensure that Peach Festival continues to be a great, family event. Our sponsors make it possible for us to present world-class entertainment with no admission charge. You would normally pay $40 or $50 to
watch bands like 54/40 or Lighthouse. Not at Peach Festival! Thanks to dozens of great supporters, including Peters Bros. Paving who are sponsoring the two aforementioned groups, everyone can afford to attend Peachfest. Besides five days of non-stop entertainment in Okanagan Lake Park, we have the Aboriginal Cultural Village (Friday-Saturday) in Gyro Park; Jobfest (Friday-Sunday) in Gyro Park; the Square Dance Festival (Wednesday to Saturday) at the Seniors Drop-in Centre; sandcastle competition on Thursday night at Skaha Beach; Sheila Bishop Memorial Wooden Bat Slowpitch Tournament (Saturday-Sunday) at Lions Park; two parades; Shooting Star Midway at Rotary Park; and the crowning of Miss Penticton on Friday night at the Cleland Theatre. Have a great time at Peach Festival... and make some great memories. Don Kendall 2012 Peach Festival President

LEGENDARY CANADIAN GROUP COMING TO THE PEACH FESTIVAL
A
band that has been at center stage in the Canadian music industry for three decades will headline at the 2012 Penticton Peach Festival. Peters Bros. Construction will present 54-40 in Okanagan Lake Park on Friday, Aug. 10. Since their formation in Vancouver, in 1981, 54-40 has recorded a dozen top 10 singles and 13 studio albums. Three of those albums attained platinum sales status. “This will be one of the biggest nights in the history of the Peach Festival,” said Entertainment Director Bill Kolter. “Music fans are used to paying $40 or $50 to see 54-40. Thanks to Peters Bros., we can bring in this type of talent and keep the festival free for everyone.” With the singing and songwriting talents of Neil Osborne, 54-40 scored a significant breakthrough with its third album, “Show Me,” which spawned the hits “One Gun,” and “One Day in Your Life. Their long list of hits includes: Baby Ran; Ocean Pearl; Lies
To Me; Love You All; She La; Casual Viewin’; and Since When. One of their most recognizable songs, “I Go Blind,” was covered by Hootie & the Blowfish in the mid-1990s. The song was also used on the first soundtrack for the television series, “Friends.” Kolter said, “They have recorded some great songs, but what separates 54-40 from other bands are their live performances. They put on a fantastic show.”

ne of the greatest groups in Canadian music history will be headlining at the 2012 Penticton Peach Festival. Peters Bros. Construction will present ‘Lighthouse’ on stage Wednesday, Aug. 8 in Okanagan Lake Park. Lighthouse is among only three groups to earn the Juno Award, as ‘Canadian Group of the Year’, in three consecutive years (the others are Loverboy and Blue Rodeo). During the peak of their popularity, in the 1970s, they were the number one group in Canada and gained international recognition.”We are thrilled to have Lighthouse coming to Penticton,” said Peach Festival Entertainment Director Bill Kolter. “They are truly a legend in Canadian music.” Their big band sound, which was often compared to ‘Chicago’, produced numerous top 10 hits including: One Fine Morning, Hats Off to the Stranger, Pretty Lady, Sunny Days, Take It Slow and You Girl. In the 1970s, Lighthouse performed for capacity crowds at Carnegie Hall, Filmore East, Filmore West, the Monterey Pop Festival, the Isle of Wight Festival (England), and the World’s Fair in Japan. More than 100,000 people attended a free Lighthouse concert in Downtown Toronto. The group disbanded in 1976, but reunited to headline at the Calgary Stampede in 1992. Since then, they have been thrilling audiences throughout Canada and the U.S. The current 10-member group, which includes five original members, has been intact for 18 years. Kolter said, “They tour extensively in the east and they came as far west as Alberta last year. Now, thanks to the generous support of Peters Bros., we’re bringing them to the Peach Festival.”

eachfest is pleased to offer square and round dancing for its 59th consecutive year in August. The four-day dance festival, held at the Seniors Drop-In on South Main Street, runs Wednesday, Aug. 8 through Saturday, Aug. 11. It is expected to attract about 500 dancers of all ages from throughout Western Canada and the United States. What keeps them coming back each year? It’s the fun, the opportunity to meet new friends, the mental and physical stimulation, and universality which modern square dancing has to offer. This year there are 26 square dance callers and 12 round dance cuers featured on the program. Watch for the Aquaduck dancers in the waters of Okanagan Lake, near Power Street, on Saturday afternoon. he ninth annual Sheila Bishop Memorial Wooden Bat Slo-pitch Tournament will be held Aug. 11 and 12 as part of the 65th annual Penticton Peach Festival. Twelve teams are expected to play in the tourney at Lions Park. Tournament Chairman Paul Borba said the co-ed event takes players back to the early days of slopitch. “Everyone uses a wooden bat... just like the old days,” Borba said. One of the highlights of the tournament is a home run hitting contest on Sunday. There will also be a silent auction, raffles and a beverage garden. All proceeds from the event go to charity. In the first eight years, more than $23,000 was donated to a variety of local charities. Borba said, “We welcome everyone to Lions Park... friends, family and visitors.”

FEATURED ENTERTAINER - NIKITA AFONSO
LOCAL RISING STAR TO HEADLINE SATURDAY
O
ne of the Okanagan’s rising music stars will be on the main stage at the 65th annual Penticton Peach Festival. Nikita Afonso will headline Saturday, Aug. 11 in Okanagan Lake Park. She will be followed on Saturday evening by the AC/DC tribute band, ‘High Voltage’, which has thrilled Peach Festival fans for the past two years. Nikita has been performing in the South Okanagan for several years, but burst into the spotlight last year when country superstar Keith Urban called her up on stage to sing in front of a capacity crowd at the South Okanagan Events Center. Since then, she attracted a sellout crowd at the Cleland Theater and was the opening act for Paul Brandt at the SOEC. “I’m really excited about playing at the Peach Festival,” Nikita said. “I grew up dreaming that some day I would be up on stage, in front of thousands of people, at Peachfest.” Peach Festival Entertainment Director Bill Kolter said he is thrilled to have Nikita performing this year. “Firstly, she is a great singer and songwriter,” Kolter said. “And secondly, she is from Penticton.” Kolter said that while Peachfest is known for bringing Canada’s top entertainers to Penticton, the festival has always placed an emphasis on local entertainers. He said, “It is important that we
provide a venue for our local performers to show their talent in front of their hometown fans. This year, we will have 27 local acts performing on the main stage.” In addition to the main stage entertainers, numerous local performers will be featured at the Aboriginal Cultural Village, in nearby Gyro Park. Among the headline acts confirmed for Peach Festival are: Lighthouse, three-time recipient of Canada’s Group of the Year Award; legendary Vancouver rockers 54-40; and the West Coast Lumberjack Show, which attracted huge crowds when they made their first appearance at Peachfest in 2009.

ew headliners get invited back to the Penticton Peach Festival in consecutive years. But, Killarney is returning to the main stage on Sunday, Aug. 12. “The response to Killarney last year was incredible,” said Peachfest Entertainment Director Bill Kolter. “People of all ages loved the band.” Killarney emigrated from Ireland to Canada in the mid1970s and quickly became one of the most popular touring bands in the country. At one point, Killarney had a weekly television show on CBC-TV. As they settled on the west coast, they began playing regularly at the Blarney Stone, in Gastown. In fact, they have now been the house band at the Blarney Stone for more than 25 years... which qualifies them as the longest serving house band in the world. At the Blarney Stone, their capacity crowds are comprised mostly of college students and young adults, but they are also popular with Baby Boomers. Kolter said,“It doesn’t matter if you are 20 or 60... you’ll be stomping your feet or dancing to their music.” In addition to playing a wide variety of Irish folk and classic rock, one of Killarney’s three lead singers sounds exactly like a music legend. “John Cronin sounds just like Neil Diamond,” Kolter said. Peach Festival concludes Sunday night with the Mop Tops, a Beatles tribute band that thrilled Peachfest audiences in 2009; and then Killarney.
NEW FEATURE – 3D RIDE
T
here will be a new attraction at the Penticton Peach Festival this year. For the first time, 'The Magicland Movie Ride' will be on location in Okanagan Lake Park. The 3-D ride, which holds 12 people, is similar to many simulator-style rides found at major amusement parks in the California. Magicland thrills riders with realistic motion, captivating video, surround sound and wind blowing in their face. For the past two years, The Magicland Movie Ride has been touring throughout Western Canada. "We're always looking for new attractions," said Peach Festival President Don Kendall. "And I'm sure the Movie Ride will provide some real excitement for families who visit Peachfest." While admission to Okanagan Lake Park is free, there will be an admission charge for the Movie Ride.

MISS PENTICTON PAGEANT
NEW ROYALTY WILL BE CROWNED DURING THE PENTICTON PEACH FESTIVAL
T
he Penticton Peach Festival Royalty Program began in 1948 and, thanks to dedicated volunteers, sponsors and interested young women, the program is as strong today as it was 65 years ago. There are 13 candidates this year, and all have benefitted from a variety of workshops, lectures and hands on experiences. The candidates are sponsored by local businesses and represent those businesses to the public at their five public appearances: Debut Night, Talent Presentation, Fashion Show, Speech Competition and Pageant Night. The 13 candidates signed up in January and committed to attend a royalty meeting every week between February 1 and August 5. Each one will have worked hard to hone their research, writing and public speaking skills. They will have practised to perfection their talent presentations. They have written, rewritten and practised for the speech competition. Judges, anonymous and unseen, have been watching and marking them every step of the way.
Finally the big night, Pageant Night, this year on Friday, August 10 at the Cleland Theatre – tickets are available from Jo Sommerfeld at Hartford Travel, call 250493-2000 ext 103. The new Queen and Princesses begin their royal year by riding the Penticton Peach Festival Float in the Peters Bros Grand Parade the day following Pageant Night. Their royal year will take them to communities throughout British Columbia, Alberta and Washington State. Their purpose is to be an Ambassador for Penticton by promoting the city, its festivals and events, and its desirable lifestyle to all they meet.

TALENTED FIRST NATION GIRL SENDS ENVIRONMENTAL MESSAGE THROUGH SONG
T
a’Kaiya, 11, lives in North Vancouver and is a home schooled student entering Grade 6 this fall. She particularly enjoys studying the oceans and marine life and so it became her idea to write a song about an oil spill. When Ta’Kaiya and her singing coach Aileen began writing “Shallow Waters,” it was to raise awareness about a proposed oil pipeline between the Alberta Tar Sands and Kitimat, BC. By the time the song was almost finished, the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico suddenly happened.
Ta’kaiya is making an impact by creating awareness about environmental issues across the Nation with her powerful messages through music. She recently traveled to speak at the UN Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio De Janiero. We are very honoured to have her join us at Peachfest on Friday, Aug. 10. Ta’Kaiya will take part in the Aboriginal Cultural Village opening ceremonies, in Gyro Park, at 12 noon; and will be on the main stage in Okanagan Lake Park at 3:20 p.m.
