Rallying for Sushil About 20 Quesnel residents came out to last Monday’s city council meeting with signs in support of Coun. Sushil Thapar. In light of his recent censure, this rally was organized and saw participants standing in front of city hall with signs in support of the councillor. Some supporters also came into the council chambers with signs, but were quickly asked to remove them by Mayor Mary Sjostrom. The rally was planned to support Coun. Thapar as he has been censured for the third time in his career as councillor.

Bruising is more common as we get older. Tiny blood vessels, called capillaries in our skin become more fragile and are more likely to rupture.

Also the skin contains less fat so there is less protection for the capillaries. Even though we bruise more easily as we age, your doctor should be consulted if you have large painful bruises or bruises that come on suddenly.

Heartburn results when the valve that shuts off the tube to the stomach doesn’t seal well enough and allows the food to come back up the tube (esophagus). Because that food has been mixing with stomach acid, this regurgitation causes the burning feeling in the esophagus. If heartburn becomes chronic, see your doctor.

If you have to give your child a medication that doesn’t taste that good, try giving a cold treat like a Popsicle before and after giving the medicine.

The cold will help numb the taste buds and make the bad taste less noticeable.

Work underway on Barkerville’s schoolhouse rebuild An inaugural donation of $10,000 pledged by two Central Interior Regional Districts is already bearing fruit on the main street of Barkerville Historic Town.

This past June, a joint meeting of the Cariboo Regional District and the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George held at Barkerville resulted in each Regional District contributing $5,000 to the National Historic Site’s efforts to rebuild the Barkerville School.

The schoolhouse, which was destroyed by fire many decades ago, is being reconstructed in its original

location between the current setting of J.P. Taylor’s Drug Store and the Cariboo Lodge #4 Masonic Hall.

Construction has already begun, and the project’s progress can be observed by visitors on a daily basis throughout Barkerville 150th anniversary season in 2012.

When complete, the new Barkerville School will effectively double the amount of educational space provided by Barkerville’s current 1860s schoolhouse recreation and provide ample room for thousands of children and adult visitors

alike who visit the heritage site annually.

“The Regional District of Fraser-Fort George is pleased to lend its support to the reconstruction of the [Barkerville] Schoolhouse,” Chair of the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George, Art Kaehn said.

“Barkerville is an important tourism and cultural amenity in Northern BC, and we’re pleased to support a project that will continue to enable thousands of school children each year to learn more about this important heritage site.”

“We are excited to con-

tribute to this exciting project,” added Cariboo Regional District Chair, Al Richmond.

“Over 2,000 students from across BC visit Barkerville every year and it will be great to have a space that can better accommodate these groups while still ensuring an authentic 1800’s schoolhouse experience.”

Although this is a first time donation to Barkerville from either Regional District, both have been long-time supporters and partners of BC’s Gold Rush Town.

RALPH EDWIN SANDERSON June 25, 1929 - July 30, 2012 Ralph Edwin Sanderson, of North Vancouver, BC passed away peacefully at Lion’s Gate Hospital on Monday, July 30th at 11:30 A.M. with family by his side. Ralph was born on June 25, 1929 at Maple Creek SK. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Virginia ; his children Harold (Dianne) Sanderson, Eldon (Sarina) Sanderson, Valerie (Daryl) Johannesen, Daryl (Holly) Sanderson and Maureen (Tony) Richichi and his 11 grandchildren, Erin & Garth, Eric, Jordy, Justin, Kevin & Daren, Kaeli & Jenna, Chad (Heather) & Rebecca as well as 3 great-grandchildren, Sarah, Nathan & Hannah; one sister, Edna (Ed) Caruk of Toronto ON, one brother, Stan (Lynn) of West Kelowna, BC and numerous nieces and nephews.

TELUS supports Barkerville education programming An inaugural donation from the TELUS Community Action Team towards Barkerville’s Educational Programming: K-12 School Students ensured the historic town’s School Program was action central at the start of Barkerville’s 150th anniversary season.

Students and teachers alike have experienced Barkerville’s exceptional history for decades through the National Historic Site’s award-winning, curriculum-based interpretive School Program.

OPINIONS A little Olympic fever

I

t’s always a struggle to catch much of the Olympics when you work during the day and by the time you get home the other media have spilled the beans on who won what and who went home empty handed.

However, this long weekend I was able to actually watch some of the games in real time as the medals were being earned.

If you asked me before the games started would I really be glued to my television watching track bicycle events, I would have looked at you with a withering expression as if to say “I’ve much better things to do.”

But, you know, I watched that sport as the young Canadian competitor was trying her hardest to become a medal contender and it wasn’t half bad.

If I’m being honest, the fact the event only took a few minutes probably influenced my attention span, but regardless, I watched three heats and didn’t wander off looking for something better to do.

Having a heat wave hit the Cariboo didn’t hurt either, as going outside wasn’t very attractive, although I was at SkyFest on Saturday and that was fabulous, challenging to stay hydrated, but well worth it.

But I digress. Now that I’ve a taste for the Olympics, I’ve witnessed men’s pommel horse, floor routines, uneven parallel bars, men’s sprint and a few other sports I can’t remember.

No one will ever accuse me of taking my sports too seriously, but hey, every two years (I try to catch a few of the winter events, as well) I can sacrifice my valuable free time to watching the world’s greatest atheletes pit their skills against each other, then grumble and argue with the TV as to the questionable judging. I believe that may an Olympic sport in just about every country, even China with their runaway medal count.

I think I’ve absorbed enough to carry on a social conversation about the 2012 Olympics in, oh what city is it? Oh yes, London.

Pipeline posturing doesn’t help T

he B.C. Liberal government is taking its new hardline approach to federal environmental hearings on the Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline proposal in September.

Environment Minister Terry Lake has filed the B.C. government’s notice to cross-examine Enbridge, one of the world’s biggest pipeline operators. Lake outlined the “tough questions” B.C. representatives will ask about spill response capacity on land and sea, tanker escort tugboats, pipe wall thickness, and Enbridge’s sluggish response to a pipeline rupture in Michigan.

That’s all fine, and to be expected after Premier Christy Clark’s highprofile confrontation with Alberta Premier Alison Redford going into the recent premiers’ meeting in Halifax.

Clark’s demands for “world-leading” safety and spill response, as well as meeting the constitutional obligation to consult and accommodate aboriginal groups along the route, are mostly a statement of the obvious. Her call for a “fair share” of proceeds from

Pipeline opponents seized on Clark’s suggestion that a major oil spill might be tolerable if there was enough money in it for B.C. NDP leader Adrian Dix picked up the theme as he conducted his own belated tour of the proposed route to reiterate his opposition.

There had been earlier hints from Alberta that B.C. might need further rewards for the risk. But when Clark made the “fair share” demand public, Redford was moved to channel Margaret Thatcher, declaring: “The Premier of Alberta is not going to blink on royalties.” The lady’s not for blinking, but neither is B.C.’s Iron Snowbird, as Preston Manning dubbed Clark this spring.

All this political theatre doesn’t amount to much.

the Lions Gate bridge, a heavy oil spill from Second Narrows to Stanley Park would be catastrophic to Vancouver’s environment and economy.

Tankers have made that trip safely nearly 100 years, but the congested modern shipping lane offers more threat of collision, and clearing Burrard Inlet for near-daily tanker transits would disrupt the rest of B.C.’s shipping trade.

An Angus Reid poll last week showed as many as half of respondents remain open-minded about the costs and benefits of new oil pipelines across B.C. Unlike B.C. politicians, they seem interested in learning more before making up their minds.

Dix and the NDP ran to the front of the anti-pipeline parade early, as they did with the carbon tax and other issues.

Clark began the Northern Gateway discussion with a principled position to wait for the result of the federal review, but that’s apparently out the window with an election looming.

I’ll stand by my January prediction that the Enbridge proposal is unlikely to proceed, mainly due to the tangled state of aboriginal claims. Wealthy U.S. foundations that view the B.C. North Coast as their 500-year eco-experiment will be happy to help fund a decade of legal challenges, while continuing the media-spinning and protest support they are doing now.

Even if some way can be found to levy a B.C. tax on revenues from the Northern Gateway pipeline, it’s no solution. For one thing, it would confer an advantage to the TransMountain pipeline that has been shipping Alberta oil to Burnaby and the U.S. for more than 60 years.

The competing expansion proposal by TransMountain’s current owner, Kinder Morgan, shows the inconsistency of opposition to pipelines.

Does anyone really believe that a new pipeline built to the highest standards ever would be too dangerous, while a 60-year-old pipeline is acceptable?

Teen mentor speaks to the value of the program I

believe the Teen Mentoring program at Big Brothers / Big Sisters is great. It gives children a role model who helps them to grow and learn in ways that will help them throughout their life. Not only does it help the “little” learn, but Big Brothers/Big Sisters also teaches the Teen Mentors important lessons.

Being a teen mentor, I grew to understand the importance of good role models in children’s lives. Children learn from what they see older people in their life doing; they learn in a “monkey see, monkey do” kind of way. Some children, however, don’t have good role models in their life and this is not their fault. Big Brothers/Big Sisters gives those children an opportunity to have a good role model and learn from them.

While I was a teen mentor, I could see the impact I made on those children in such a short period of time. For example, my first buddy was very hyper and didn’t like to help clean up at first. He was not very respectful at all. By the end of my time with him he had settled down and would listen very well. He would help me

SHARING A LITTLE MAGIC clean up without me asking and he was talking to me in a much kinder voice. I believe he did so because he had been around me enough to learn the appropriate ways to act and treat each other. Big Brothers/ Big Sisters does more than just help teach children life lessons though. This program helps to build friendships.

Being in it, I have learned how much having a reliable friend can mean to a child.

It gives them something to look forward to each week.

It gives them confidence when an older student encourages them. A teen mentor lets a child know they are cared about and have people there for them. Not only does the “little” receive a good friend,

but so does the teen mentor. I grew very close to my “littles” and was sad when it was time to say good bye. Altogether, I believe Big Brothers/Big Sisters, has helped me, along with my “littles”, to learn from each other and grow into better people.

It is a wonderful program that benefits everyone who is part of it. It has showed me how much my support can help a child and I would be very happy to do it again. – Megan Poole is a Grade

eniors’ Advocacy Service will soon ofter Touch Screen Computer Awareness, the first program of its kind in the province.

This independent orientation could mean the difference between successful and unsuccessful completion of the touch-screen driving assessment.

“Unsuccessful completion rate of the on-line driving assessment appears to be high due to unfamiliarity of touch screen technology,” SAS’ Susan MacNeill said.

Each client will sign up for a minimum of two sessions on the touch screen computer. The first session will familiarize them with touch screen technology through computer games.

The games format tests various cognitive competencies and helps prepare the client for what they could face in the on-line driving assessment.

The second session reviews the technology and goes over the components of the DriveABLE assessment.

They include motor speed and control; span of attentional field; spatial judgement and decision making; speed of attentional shifting; executive functioning (verbal instruction); and identification of driving situations.

DriveABLE’s in-office assessment tool is a sciencebased driving evaluation designed to identify at risk drivers, regardless of age.

A recommendation for the assessment may come from a person’s family physician, concerned family members or others.

Often the family physician, who is usually visited one or more times a year by patients, are likely to be the first person ‘in authority’ to encounter a driver who

has become medically impaired. It is recommended physicians notify licensing bodies of concern regarding competence to drive.

When medical conditions or medication changes

affect someone’s abilities even the best drivers can become unsafe. Due to the effect of the medical condition, a driver may lack insight into his or her current driving skills. Past driving records and personal opinions about those skills may not be relevant when considering if someone is safe to drive.

If there is memory loss, poor judgment, indecisiveness, disorientation or loss of strength, flexibility or balance, it is time to determine if the changes are affecting driving.

SAS understands the need to assess at-risk individuals’ driving competency, however many of the clients they serve are seniors who aren’t familiar with much of the new computer technology, including touch screen.

SAS volunteer Lyle Orchison said they would be taking appointments for the program the first week of September and clients will have two, half-hour appointments within two weeks of each other, as the second appointment builds on the learning received in the first appointment.

“If needed, clients can book more sessions,” Orchison said.

“We want clients to be comfortable with touch screen computers.”

Currently, SAS volunteers are being trained on the touch screen computer in order to provide the most comprehensive orientation for clients.

SAS would also like to acknowledge the Quesnel Human Rights and Civil Liberties Association for their financial support of the new touch screen computer.

North Cariboo K9 offering canine training North Cariboo K9 is offering three classes over the next few weeks to provide dog training.

The first is a level 1 group obedience class beginning Aug. 12. The cost is $120 plus HST and the course runs for one hour, once a week for six weeks.

The second is a two-day seminar, Aug. 24 – 25 called Tracking through Drive. This seminar gets the dog using its strongest sense, smell, through the animal’s natural instinct and ability.

The third and final event is a two-day Protection Dog Seminar with Dave Gomme from Edmonton.

Gomme has worked extensively with police K9 units across North America and since he had so much fun in Quesnel, this expert is coming back for his second time this year.

People from Kamloops, Vancouver and Williams Lake have already committed to coming to Quesnel just to attend Gomme’s seminar.

All three seminars are open to anyone wanting to do more and learn more with their dogs.

Ba rkerville THIS IS BARKERVILLE’S STORY The Cariboo region of British Columbia’s central interior has been profoundly shaped by gold, thanks to a simple, working-class English prospector named Billy Barker who, in 1862, spearheaded a twenty-year, multi-billion dollar industrial revolution that literally helped build a Province.

I am 11 years old and I have been in Kersley 4-H for two years. My projects this year include a market swine, and a pen of meat rabbits. I am also raising some poultry to show and have three garden containers of tomatoes, herbs and peppers.

This is my fourth year in 4-H and I am doing a horse and steer. My horse’s name is Rio and he is 14. I use him for sorting in Williams Lake and to work with cows around the farm. I’ve had him for two years and he is one of the best horses I have had. My other project is my steer. His name is Luke. He is part Angus and part Simmental. He is the biggest baby that I know of.

I am 17 years old and this is my 11th year is 4-H. I show rabbits, sheep and gardening.

Our club has been around for over 30 years. We have 20 members in our club. We have done speeches, demonstrations, a district judging rally as well as a club rally. We have had many meetings. We have beef, sheep, swine, rabbit, poultry, goat, garden and photography projects in our club.

We had our spaghetti dinner in March for the Kersley community that was a great success.

Many members went on 4-H trips this year.

Thomas Christen, Jordan Nichols and Katie Baker went to Provincial Club week during spring break in Naramata. This is a week long self discovery seminar. Jordan earned a trip to Quebec in September for the National 4-H Conference.

Kirsten Nichols went to Food for Thought. This is a program that takes place in July in the Fraser Valley. Members tour farms and learn about the agriculture industry.

Thomas Christen was a camp counselor for a 4-H camp in Vanderhoof in the beginning of July. He really enjoyed himself.

Katie Baker went to South Coastal Judging Rally in Coombs this July. This is a judging rally of Lower Mainland members and Vancouver Island Members.

The top Central Interior members are invited to attend.

Dayton Swaan, Chantelle Klassen and Katie Baker advanced to the District Speeches. Dayton and Katie then advanced to the Regional Speeches. Dayton place third at Regionals.

Dayton Swaan, Trenton Kishkan, Kirsten Nichols and Sarah Wootton went to District Demonstrations and both teams advanced to Regional Demonstrations. Dayton and Trenton placed second in the junior division and Kirsten and Sarah placed 2nd in the senior division.

The beef members had a grooming clinic on July 28th.

We had Martin Rossman come to a club meeting and discuss swine with our members.

Toastmasters came to another club meeting and talked to us about speeches.

The horse members had a showmanship and prep for show clinic with local horse person Alica Orser at Pen-Y-Bryn Farm. After the clinic the eight horse members had a free ride. The four senior members helped the four junior members with riding tips.

We would like to thank our club sponsor Quesnel Ag Parts.

All the members are getting their projects ready for our show and sale which will take place August 8th -11th with our sale at August 11th at 3:00 pm. This all takes place at Alex Fraser Park.

I have been in the Kersley 4-H club for eight years, mostly showing beef. All of my time in 4-H has been educational and has taught me a lot about agriculture. The places that 4-H can take people is incredible.

He likes to wallow in the mud puddle in his pen.

I am 17 years old and this is my 11th year in 4-H. I show rabbits, sheep and gardening.

This is my horse 4-H project. Yamaha is a 14 year old bay thoroughbred. We enjoy trail rides in the community pasture.

I am working on getting to lope nicely in the arena.

I am doing a horse project for the first time. My horse is named Zarah, she is 21 years old and is an Arabian/Morgan cross. She is a rescue horse from the Prince George Equine Rescue Centre. She is little but has lots of energy. I love taking her around the barrels and on trail rides. We are working on her not being so hyper on trail rides.

I have been a member of the Kersley 4-H club for eight years. I have raised a variety of different market and breeding projects as well as achieving with non-livestock projects. I have had alot of fun for the time I have been in 4-H and I recommend it to anyone who is interested.

I have been involved in 4-H for 5 years and this year I will be completing 3 projects: horse, cow/calf pair, and a beef market project. My horse, Crickett, is a 6 year old purebred Quarter Horse sired by Doc Freckles Leo; I have had her since she was eight months old. She is used as a working cow horse and competes in cattle sorting. My cow, Sally, 3 years old, is a Purebred Red Angus and has now given me her second bull calf. I bought her as a yearling heifer and have shown her in previous 4-H shows.

The market project that I will be selling at the 4-H auction, a steer, is a yearling Simmental Angus cross that I have raised and bought from a local farm.

I am looking forward to showing my projects at the 4-H show and sale.

JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter The Kangaroos will be looking for a couple new players to fill vacancies in last year’s line-up at the tryouts this month.

Both Alessio Tomassetti and Rigby Burgart are heading south to Kamloops to attend University and play hockey for the school’s team.

Burgart, a forward for last year’s Kangaroos, will head to Thompson Rivers University (TRU) come September to join the TRU WolfPack.

A gritty forward who knew how to score, Burgart will leave a large hole in the lineup.

Last year, Burgart had 14 goals and 16 assists and 14 penalty minutes in 16 games. He added four goals and six assists in the post season, leading the Kangaroos.

“I’m excited about returning to play competitive hockey at the same time as going to school,” Burgart said.

“I’m more motivated than ever to get a good education and playing for a good team as well.

“I hear Kamloops is a great hockey city and supports all their teams including the WolfPack.

I’m also looking forward to getting out and being involved in the WolfPack’s community activities.”

Burgart is enrolled in the electrical program at Thompson Rivers.

“We are pleased to announce that Rigby Burgart will attend TRU in the fall and play for the WolfPack Men’s Hockey team,” Chris Hans, The WolfPack general manager, said.

“Rigby is an important addition to the program as he brings considerable

WHL and BCHL experience to our lineup. Rigby brings a tough, physical style of play to our team which is an area coach Schulz and I identified as something we needed to improve upon for the 2012/2013 BCIHL season.”

Tomassetti, a centre for the Kangaroos last year, has signed a letter of intent to join Burgart at TRU in the fall.

With 13 goals and 19 assists in 18 games which helped the Kangaroos make the Coy Cup Championship Final, Tomassetti will be missed by the team.

The coaching staff at TRU, however, are very pleased to add him to the team.

“I’m very pleased that Alessio has finally committed to us after two years of him on our radar,” Head coach Don Schulz said.

Tomasseti is equally excited to be headed to Kamloops to join the team.

“I heard the TRU hockey program is a great one and its had a lot of success,” Tomassetti said.

“They have almost won the title a couple of times and I am hoping this year I can help bring it home.”

Besides playing hockey, Tomassetti is registered in the electrical trades program at TRU. The Kangaroos are having their tryouts for the upcoming season this month, Aug. 20.

New jewelry from Surrey JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter Shalynn McCauley came home from Surrey with her head hung low not because she lost, but because her neck sported two new pieces of jewelry.

McCauley received a silver for her own performance, and her horse Odyssey’s as well, in equestrian show jumping at the B.C. Summer Games along with a bronze for the joint performance of the whole zone 8 team.

“It felt really good. I felt really accomplished,” McCauley said of the win.

A veteran of the equestrian jumping

scene, McCauley’s been on horses for a good part of her life.

“My mom’s had me on a horse since I was a baby,” McCauley said.

Despite that wealth of experience, McCauley said she spent most of the preceding summer in training for her biggest tournament challege to date.

Her experience since childhood and her packed training schedule paid off with a clear final run, an accomplishment that assured her a spot on the podium as she was only one of two riders who managed to ride the last stage clean.

Now that she has a provincial level

tournament under her belt, McCauley is looking forward to taking her show jumping just as far as she is able.

And while McCauley is now adorned with extra

jewelry, the horse, unbeknown to it, went unrewarded by the B.C. Games organizers. McCauley, however, was sure to reward her loyal horse after the win.

He got a big carrot.
