A 24-year-old Pitt Meadows man mistakenly jumped to his death last Wednesday after trying to avoid a large truck while jogging in Stewart, near the Alaska border. Police believe the man was jogging west on Hwy. 37A, when a large truck approached behind him. He crossed the road to avoid the truck, and jumped over a concrete barrier, unaware of the steep drop to the ocean on the other side. The man, who’s name is not being released at the request of his family, fell about 10 metres on to the rocks below. Alcohol or drugs were not factors and foul play is not suspected, said police. Stewart RCMP were called to the scene at 6:45 p.m. where they found the unconscious man on the rocky shore. He was taken to Stewart Hospital where he later died of his injuries.

A Maple Ridge man, who police say has ties to organized crime, will not face a murder trial for a shooting in 2009. A second-degree murder charge against Hershan ‘Shawn’ Singh Bains was stayed in New Westminster Supreme Court last week, bringing court proceedings to an end, three years after Steve Nagra was killed. On May 28, 2009, Nagra drove himself to Ridge Meadows hospital in a black SUV peppered with bullet holes while suffering from a gunshot wound. The shooting took place in the residential neighbourhood of 11400-block of Maple Crescent in Maple Ridge. The 29-year-old collapsed in the emergency and was stabilized by doctors, but died the next day after being transported to Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster. A month later, Bains was arrested by RCMP, who said the 31-yearold was known to police for “his continued association with organized crime ﬁgures.” Neil MacKenzie, a spokesperson for B.C.’s criminal justice branch, said new evidence has revealed Bains was not the only individual who was potentially responsible for the murder. Hot summer weather saw vacationers ﬂock to Golden Ears Provincial Park for the August long weekend. The local park is the busiest in the provincial parks system, but despite every campsite and parking spot being full, there was little trouble for the parks operators last weekend. “We had no police incidents,” said park manager Stu Burgess. “We had some people having a bit too much fun some nights, but other than that, everyone behaved themselves.” The park’s 409 campsites at Alouette, North Beach, and Gold Creek campgrounds were each full by Wednesday as campers opted to get a head start on the weekend, Burgess said. The parks day-use area at Alouette Lake had to be brieﬂy shut down Saturday, Sunday, and Monday as the park’s 800 parking spaces were full. Burgess estimated there were close to 2,300 people on the beach each day. “It was a perfect summer weekend for us,” he said. “Hopefully we can get this weather to continue.”

Rotary raises bucks from ducks, for good causes Nearly 9,000 rubber ducks raced along the Alouette River Sunday, raising thousands of dollars for local youth groups. Exactly 8,850 ducks were sold during the second annual Rotary Duck Race raising $88,500 for not-for-proﬁt youth organizations and Rotary youth projects in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. Last year, 7,000 ducks were sold. Organizer Bob Schantz, was pleased with the race, especially how the ducks ﬂowed down the river this year. That was because of changes made by Peter Davies, river coordinator. “The race couldn’t have gone better if it had been done to a script,” said Davies. “The river conditions were perfect. The ducks did what they were told to do. The winner got ahead of everybody and went straight through the tube.” It took 10 minutes for the ducks to make it downstream. Winner of the grand prize, a 2012 Jeep Wrangler Sport 4x4 provided by Maple Ridge Chrysler and valued at $25,995 was Franz Prokop. The second prize winner of a luxury cruise for two aboard Holland America Lines, valued at $3,300, was Alanna Wadhwani. Third prize, a household furniture and appliance package provided by Fuller Watson, valued at $3,500, was won by Andrea Buckley.

Council has its work cut out for it in fall While one proposal to mine gravel from the north end of Maple Ridge’s 256th Street, is on hold, another, possibly more contentious proposal is in process. Owners of two properties along 124th Avenue at 236th Street want to haul gravel out of the area, up to 400,000 cubic metres, then bring in top soil and restore the area for agricultural use. The land is within the Agricultural Land Reserve borders. The problematic part is the proposed pit is adjacent to residential areas. It’s not in far reaches of 256th Street where few people would be affected. Understandably, the people who live in the area are upset. Coho Creek runs nearby. The impact of thousands of gravel trucks rumbling down 124th Avenue and the effects on the neighbourhood, both man-made and natural, is a concern. Gravel is an essential part of our economic growth. You can’t build roads or buildings without the stuff and it has to come from somewhere and provincial laws trump local in locating such operations. In this case though, Maple Ridge has the ﬁnal say. The applicants have to get district approval for non-farm use of the land, giving council the option of forwarding the application to the commission or rejecting it and killing it, outright. Politicians will get their ﬁrst look in September when the application goes to committee. Residents will be there in numbers. It’s early in the process and there are plenty of questions. Premier’s pipeline posturing no help VICTORIA – The B.C. Liberal government is taking its new hard-line approach to federal environmental hearings on the Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline proposal in September. Environment Minister Terry Lake B.C. Views has filed the B.C. government’s notice Tom Fletcher to cross-examine Enbridge, one of the world’s biggest pipeline operators. Lake outlined the “tough questions” B.C. representatives will ask about spill response capacity on land and sea, tanker escort tugboats, pipe wall thickness, and Enbridge’s sluggish response to a pipeline rupture in Michigan. That’s all fine, and to be expected after Premier Christy Clark’s high-profile confrontation with Alberta Premier Alison Redford going into the recent premiers’ meeting in Halifax. Clark’s demands for “world-leading” safety and spill response, as well as meeting the constitutional obligation to consult and accommodate aboriginal groups along the route, are mostly a statement of the obvious. Her call for a “fair share” of proceeds from exported oil to reflect B.C.’s risk has been assaulted from all sides. Pipeline opponents seized on Clark’s suggestion that a major oil spill might be tolerable if there was enough money in it for B.C. NDP leader Adrian Dix picked up the theme as he conducted his own belated

tour of the proposed route to reiterate his opposition. There had been earlier hints from Alberta that B.C. might need further rewards for the risk. But when Clark made the “fair share” demand public, Redford was moved to channel Margaret Thatcher, declaring: “The Premier of Alberta is not going to blink on royalties.” The lady’s not for blinking, but neither is B.C.’s Iron Snowbird, as Preston Manning dubbed Clark this spring. All this political theatre doesn’t amount to much. I’ll stand by my January prediction that the Enbridge proposal is unlikely to proceed, mainly due to the tangled state of aboriginal claims. Wealthy U.S. foundations that view the B.C. north coast as their 500-year ecoexperiment will be happy to help fund a decade of legal challenges, while continuing the media-spinning and protest support they are doing now. Even if some way can be found to levy a B.C. tax on revenues from the Northern Gateway pipeline, it’s no solution. For one thing, it would confer an advantage to the Trans-Mountain pipeline that has been shipping Alberta oil to Burnaby and the U.S. for more than 60 years. The competing expansion proposal by Trans-Mountain’s current owner, Kinder Morgan, shows the inconsistency of opposition to pipelines. Does anyone really believe that a new pipeline built to the highest standards ever would be too dangerous, while a 60-year-old pipeline is acceptable? Protesters have an easy target in Kinder Morgan. With a tenfold increase to 25 tankers a month proposed to sail under the Lions Gate bridge, a heavy oil

spill from Second Narrows to Stanley Park would be catastrophic to Vancouver’s environment and economy. Tankers have made that trip safely for nearly 100 years, but the congested modern shipping lane offers more threat of collision, and clearing Burrard Inlet for near-daily tanker transits would disrupt the rest of B.C.’s shipping trade. An Angus Reid poll last week showed as many as half of respondents remain open-minded about the costs and

beneﬁts of new oil pipelines across B.C. Unlike B.C. politicians, they seem interested in learning more, before making up their minds. Dix and the NDP ran to the front of the anti-pipeline parade early, as they did with the carbon tax and other issues. Clark began the Northern Gateway discussion with a principled position to wait for the result of the federal review, but that’s apparently out the window with an election looming. Keep your dog leashed Editor, The News: I am writing this letter today because I am fed up, having just come back from walking my dogs and being accosted by yet another off-leash dog. Words cannot describe how infuriating it is to be a responsible dog owner in a municipality ripe with irresponsible ones. I simply don’t understand why anyone would think it is appropriate to even take their dog off-leash in a public place that is clearly marked with signs that say, “Please leash and clean up after your dog.” We are very lucky in Maple Ridge to have multiple offleash dog parks, which is why I ﬁnd it so bafﬂing that people could be so inconsiderate. I have had several dogs try to attack my leashed dogs, while their owners are nowhere to be seen. I do not want to meet your strange dog, neither do my dogs. I would like to be able to take my dogs for a walk without having to deal with such ignorance. As an owner of two pit bulls, it amazes me how much bad information has been circulating about so called “aggressive dogs.” As I previously mentioned, my dogs have been attacked many times by random dogs, most of which were “family dogs” – retrievers, poodles, labs and even a chihuahua – never a bully breed. Whatever happened to common courtesy? If you insist on taking your dog off leash in an area that is not designated for such, at least have the common sense to head somewhere secluded where you and your dog can enjoy the freedom without disturbing others. Metro Vancouver has showed great resolve doing the right thing on Coquitlam’s Brunette River, while the federal government should hang its head in shame because of its negligence to salmon and the people of B.C. I’m referring to the newly built Cariboo Dam fishway which has restored fish to the area. For years, the Brunette River was used as a convenient industrial waste dump Then, as the public demanded more, individuals and groups moved forward to clean up and rebuild this stream, riffle by riffle. But one of the key sticking points has always been the largely impassable blockage of seagoing fish at Cariboo Dam. This dam had impeded the migration of salmon into the formerly rich spawning and rearing streams of the upper Burnaby Lake watershed, much of which has been impacted by urbanization and construction of Hwy. 1. The development and construction of fish passageway for a low-head dam at the outlet of Burnaby Lake was a no-brainer. The stage was set, over the last several decades, for a fishway to restore the complete watershed. Did Fisheries and Oceans Canada step up? Of course not. That would be too much to expect of this great federal regulatory protector of salmon habitat in our home and native land. (To be fair, there was a small

trout are now using this fishway to access the spawning and rearing habitats upstream of the Cariboo Dam. This was a great accomplishment, not only for building the fishway but for being visionary enough to do so. However, one must ask, what is the role of Fisheries if not to lead, encourage, prosecute, and in some cases fund, these projects? Yes, we have seen a multimillion-dollar hatchery built on the Capilano River. But in general, Fisheries’ role in rebuilding streams and providing such fishways

has been vacuous. It’s not just in B.C. that people and agencies, are moving forwards in redressing old dam issues. The instant success of fish reaching the upper reaches of the Elwha River, in Washington state, thanks to the decommissioning of the Elwha and Glines dams, shows other jurisdictions are taking their mandates seriously. On the flip side, Fisheries and Oceans Canada clearly is not. If it was just a matter of limited budgets, we might understand this. But Fisheries is supposed to be a catalyst for other levels of government, or agencies, such as Metro Vancouver or B.C. Hydro. For us in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, a fish ladder around the Alouette Dam would be a huge contribution – allowing salmon to overcome this man-made obstruction and reach their spawning grounds in the upper Alouette watershed. Clearly, Fisheries and Oceans doesn’t care. There hasn’t been one word of official support from Fisheries for this structure. BC Hydro sits in the weeds laughing because it doesn’t have to spend a cent on a structure that has been an impediment to fish passage for a century. MacLean complained, then left force Suit from Front “We didn’t join to be harassed or be humiliated or be told that our career depended on us being friendly or having relations with our direct supervisors,” MacLean told reporters. She complained to other ofﬁcers when her supervisor pressured her to be “friendly” in exchange for advancement, but nothing was done and she quit the force in 1979 after he gave her a poor assessment. “Years later, nothing has changed,” MacLean said. “This systemic culture in the RCMP of harassment and not accepting these women as equals has to stop.” Lawyers expect a

long legal battle with the RCMP on behalf of potentially hundreds of women who allege abusive behaviour by other Mounties while serving in the force. It’s expected to take until sometime in 2013 for a ruling on whether the proposed classaction lawsuit will be certiﬁed. At the centre of the case is former Nanaimo RCMP Const. Janet Merlo, whose claim alleges she was the victim of “persistent and ongoing gender-based discrimination and harassment” by male Mounties at the detachment and that the RCMP did nothing to stop it. Jason Murray, one of

Merlo’s lawyers, said more than 200 other women – current and former Mounties – have stepped forward to join the potential class action since Merlo’s initial claim was ﬁled. “We’ve heard from women ranging from constables up to the senior ranks of the force,” he said. “There is a common thread amongst all of the women who have contacted us,” Murray said. “They feel the RCMP has cultivated an atmosphere where discrimination against women happens where it shouldn’t and [the force] has not taken adequate steps to either avoid or ﬁx the problem.”

The initial day of hearings was procedural and no more dates are expected for several months while senior government prepare responses. So far, the force has given no indication it is prepared to negotiate, he said. “If the RCMP wants to ﬁght tooth and nail, it will be a long process,” Murray said. “If the RCMP wants to move forward quickly and make real change, the opportunity is there.” Murray said he was troubled by the RCMP’s “mud slinging” response to the separate harassment lawsuit of former RCMP spokeswoman Cpl. Elizabeth Denham said her investigation of the Automated Licence Plate Recognition system is already

underway. Civil libertarians are applauding the announcement, arguing the RCMP and other forces are using the plate-scanning technology for purposes beyond the original intent. The 43 cameraequipped police cars in the province scan passing or parked vehicle plates against ICBC and national police databases. Police instantly see if a car is stolen or uninsured – or if the probable driver is unlicensed, prohibited from driv-

ing, wanted by police or accused of a crime. Each time a ﬂagged vehicle is detected, its time and location is recorded and kept for two years. Rob Wipond, one of three researchers whose work convinced Denham to act, welcomes the review. “This thing has been operating for years without any kind of independent oversight,” he said. “We’re talking about mass population surveillance.” Wipond said the criteria for generating

actionable hits has expanded from trafﬁc violations to data like whether you’ve ever gone to court to seek child custody or had a mental health episode that involved police. The result, he said, is a disturbing map of the movements of myriad suspect vehicles that can be traced back two years. That might seem laudable when it helps police ﬁnd an abduction victim, solve a murder or keep sex offenders from parking outside schools. See Scanners p11

Taken to extremes, critics argue, authorities could use ALPR to track where union leaders, protesters and journalists go and who they meet. Washington, D.C.. uses stationary ALPR cameras that form a grid that captures most vehicle movements for scrutiny. Wipond theorizes police algorithms could one day decide that because someone went to a suspicious location, they should be flagged for closer scrutiny in the future – data that might result in them not being allowed to fly or cross borders. “The public needs to think about this more,” he said. “Am I comfortable being tracked all the time, being surveilled all the time? He also denied Wipond’s suggestion a mental health incident several years old could result in someone’s plate being ﬂagged today, adding that information is generally removed from the federal

policing database. “It doesn’t ﬂag somebody simply because he’s got a criminal record,” he added. “These are for hits where we have outstanding action to be taken against an individual.” But Boucher said RCMP are considering keeping all plate recognition data for every vehicle ALPR identiﬁes on the road – not just the actionable hits. A check of non-hit ALPR data might be able to show whether a suspect’s vehicle was or wasn’t near the scene of a crime, he said. He said the pilot pro-

gram, launched more than ﬁve years ago mainly to ﬁnd stolen cars, “morphed” over time into tracking a broader set of targets because car theft alone wasn’t enough to justify its use. “There was value in identifying other infractions,” he said “That’s how it’s snowballed into where it is today,” Boucher said. “The community will have to decide if funneling every person that you pass on the street into a database is law enforcement,” said Michael Vonn B.C. There are many new projects occurring at both sites as the staff of the Pitt Meadows Museum and Archives reach the middle of the summer. The general store located at 12294 Harris Road and the Hoffmann and Son Ltd. The new exhibit will feature three new discovery boxes holding different types of model engines. The museum will eventually have a gasoline engine, a steam engine and a Stirling engine discovery box. The future plans are that the engine boxes will accompany model engines that will show the visitor how each of these engines work. The gasoline engine is the ﬁrst model being built and, along with its engine box, will be completed shortly. The model engines ﬁt perfectly with the large collect of antique stationary gasoline engines located in the shop.

The engine collection and many other pieces of farm machinery have been on display since the 1930s machine shop was donated to the museum by the Hoffmann family. Many years ago, Hans Hoffmann displayed his stationary engines for the very ﬁrst time in 1979. The museum is proud to be able to accommodate all ages of visitors as we have a large selection of hands-on activities and summer events for children. Fun and interesting volunteer options are available, as well, as students may need it for classes or extracurricular activities. Adults are welcome to use our archives room in regards to local family history or other rural history. For our summer hours we are open Wednesday through Sunday from 1-4 p.m. Hope to see you soon.

Volunteers needed for B.C. Seniors Games staff reporter While local competitors are preparing for the 2012 B.C. Senior Games in Burnaby Aug. 21 to 25, games organizers are still looking for for a few good men and women to make sure the event runs smoothly. The 2012 Burnaby B.C. Seniors Games will require close to volunteers to participate in a wide variety of

positions; everything from administration positions, to photographers, to sporting event coordinators. More than 4,000 seniors will be participating 26 different disciplines in this year’s event, which marks the 25th anniversary of the B.C. Senior Games. The 2012 B.C. Senior Games features events in archery, Badminton, bocce, bridge, carpet bowling,

Metro Vancouver politicians want the province to take another 90 days planning the future of B.C.’s four-year-old carbon tax and not rush to reject further increases or axe the tax altogether. “We don’t want to go backwards on the carbon tax,” Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson said. The board is also reminding Victoria that it already supports the carbon tax. A Metro report says the carbon tax helps minimize the region’s contribution to climate change and supports a shift to transportation alternatives by making single-occupancy vehicle travel more expensive. But Langley City Coun. Gayle Martin, vice-chair of Metro’s environment committee, doesn’t support further carbon tax hikes. “We’re getting taxed to death here on gas,” she said. “Leave it where it’s at and go from there.

It’s been a good month for aspiring singer Ria Diy by M o n i s h a M a r t i n s staff reporter

he promise Ria Diy scratched under her bed headboard won’t be erased anytime soon. When she lies down to sleep, the grafﬁti she scrawled at age 10 serves as a reminder. “I am the next star,” it says. For Diy, the words are more than a dream now. Last week, they became a reality. Diy, who just turned 15, was nominated as a “wild-card” contestant on the YTV show The Next Star. Although she did not make the top 12, Diy is thrilled she got a mention on the show and her audition video was played on TV. “I never expected anything,” said Diy, who also performs on FYE Live! a Filipino variety TV show that airs on Shaw Multicultural Channel. The Thomas Haney Secondary School student auditioned with 600 others in May and got the chance to meet one of her pop idols - Keshia Chanté. Diy sang an original song for the au-

dition called Anywhere but Here. She describes it as a ballad for her teenage friends, who believe they’ll never ﬁnd someone to love them. “It’s me telling them you just have to wait, there is someone perfect out there for you,” Diy explained. Diy, who has been singing since she was six, is taking her talent a little more seriously these days. She’s getting vocal lessons and has been doing the rounds at open mic sessions, including one at the Kanaka Creek Coffee House. She practices in her room daily. The posters on her bedroom wall and inspirational notes tacked in prominent places inspire her. All that practice has helped build her conﬁdence. Last week, she won Ridge Meadows Got Talent at Country Fest. “I’ve got a lot of support,” says Diy. Her parents and sister are intensely proud of her. Although Diy didn’t make the TV show, she’s isn’t defeated. “It makes me want to work harder,” says Diy. “This is what I was born to do.”

A young Maple Ridge piper will be competing at the World Championships in Glasgow this week as a member of Simon Fraser University youth pipe band. Cameron Ickert will celebrate his 10th birthday two days after the international competition set to take place in Scotland on Saturday (Aug. 11). Ickert and more than 60 young musicians from the Grade 3 and 4 junior Robert Malcolm Memorial (RMM) band, along with 44-member from Grade 1 band are at the competition this year. The elite band, which ﬁnished second in 2011, is looking to claim its seventh championship. The junior bands have already proved themselves contenders with strong performances at the North Berwick Highland Games in Scotland on Saturday.

The Robert Malcolm Memorial (RMM) Grade 3 band took second place in its category and its drum corps claimed first prize. The Grade 4 band – with all of its young members competing for the first time in Scotland - placed third among novice-juvenile bands. “We bring them to events like this in preparation for the Worlds, so they can get a sense of the atmosphere, the expectations and the pre-competition pressure,” says Jack Lee, pipe sergeant of the Gr. 1 band and pipe major of the young Gr. 4 band. “The Gr. 4s, with the oldest at 16, are a younger band than many of those participating in their category, and it was their first time ever playing in Scotland,” says Lee. “They did a good job of it today.” The bands started practicing when they arrived in Scotland last week. “The first practice is really about taking the pressure off and seeing where the instruments are,” added Lee. Pipe band from p17 “We’ve brought them over early so they could get used to the environment and take part in a few events before finding themselves on a world stage.” The Gr. 4 band, comprised of musicians aged nine to 16 years, performs for the first time at the international competition, which draws more than 40,000 spectators. “We’ve brought the Gr. 3’s over several times, but this is a first for us, taking the 3’s and 4’s,” says Lee. “Along with their families we have nearly 250 people with us this year.” Ickert, 9, the youngest band member, arrived the day after first practice and waited anxiously with the group for his first chanter practice with Lee, saying, “I’m totally excited.” Other bandmates wound down by playing cricket in the courtyard and napping to combat jetlag. Fourteen-year-old Russell Fairley from Port Coquitlam expects to feel “the usual nerves” before playing the biggest piping gig in the world. “Like always, you do the best you can,” says Fairley, who has been playing pipes for six years.

Max Middleton, a 13-year-old from Christchurch, New Zealand, says lots of practice will help battle the nerves. “You are always a little nervous, whenever you compete. It’s good to be here and get things started,” he added. The Grade 3 band is the highest level of the band’s junior organization and last competed in 2009, placing fourth. The band first performed in 1997, finishing second, and went on to compete every two years - winning four firsts along the way. “All of our bands are working hard this year and aiming high for wins at the Worlds,” says Lee. The RMM band is named after two members of the SFU Pipe Band, Robert Barbulak and Malcolm Bokenfohr, who were killed in a car accident in 1993. It was formed to continue developing talented and dedicated players in the spirit of the two young men.

Interactive Sports Expo looks to entice public Second annual event focuses on increasing youth participation by T i m Fi t z g e r a l d contributor The health of recreational sports in Canada is declining. According to a report prepared by the Canadian Heritage Sport Canada branch, Statistics Canada points to a troubling trend in both youth and adult involvement in sport. In the report, Sport Participation Strategy 2008 to 2012, teenagers between 15 to 18 years old, have seen their numbers drop to just 59 per cent, from 77 per cent in 1992. The 18-per-cent decline is similar to the trend in adults, where participation rates are at 28 per cent, down from 45 per cent in 1992. In Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge, the second annual Interactive Sports Expo hopes to stem the declining tide. Scheduled for Aug. 19 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Pitt Meadows Arena and Athletic Park, the free event is an opportunity to discover the wide range of sporting opportunities in the two communities, said Perry Bateson, owner of Yuen’s Family Martial Arts and one of the lead organizers. He said the eventual goal is to increase participation in the two communities by 10 to 15 per cent. “Our primary goal is to get new people off the couch,” says Bateson. “It’s a great chance to learn something new.” Canada’s Physical Activity Guides for Children and Youth reported that more than half of Canadian children and youth aged ﬁve to 17 are not active enough. The report recommends kids get at least 60 minutes of daily activity for at least three days a week. However, from 1978 to 2004, rates of obesity among Canadians aged 18 and over increased to 23 per cent, from 14 per cent. In youth, it jumped to eight per cent from three per cent. The martial arts teacher admits it’s not always easy to attract new participants to a sport, but feels this year’s focus on youth and the ability to get hands-on experience will help. Bateson said there will be as many as 30

organizations taking part, from popular sports like lacrosse and soccer, to more unique activities like archery and speed skating. With the help of the Ridge Meadows Sports and Leisure Services, the Interactive Sports Expo have also brought in keynote speaker Drew Mitchell, who oversees sport performance and technical services for the B.C. Sport Agency. Mitchell will speak at 9 a.m. on the second ﬂoor of the Pitt Meadows Arena. A graduate of Simon Fraser University with a bachelor of science in kinesiology. Mitchell has worked extensively in sports as an educator and developer of programs for the past 17 years. He has also been the manager of science and medicine programs for SportMedBC and a member of the Canadian National Canoeing team. Mitchell is currently overseeing the implementation of the Canadian Sport for Life program into B.C. Sport, as well as in education, recreation and health sectors in B.C. In addition, Nustadia Recreation will be opening the Pitt Meadows Arena for a free public skate starting at 2:30 p.m. Bateson said they hope by showcasing the wide range of sports in Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge, local organizations can better connect with families who may not even know they exist. “A lot of people may want to play a sport, but they don’t know who to get a hold of. That’s why we emphasized the interactive aspect of this year’s event. “We want families to be able to actually give something a try, like ringette or rhythmic gymnastics,” says Bateson. With so many organizations set to take part, Bateson said it’s up to the public to do its part. He said the benefits of playing team or individual sports go beyond the immediate health benefits. From building greater social connections within the community to increasing volunteers, participation strengthens the community as a whole. “We want families to come out and participate. Be there Aug. 19 and come out and play. It’s that old adage of touch it, feel it, do it.”

Beloved husband, father and grandfather lost his battle with cancer and passed away on Tuesday, July 31st at Ridge Meadows hospital at the age of seventy-three. He leaves behind his loving wife, Annie, sons: Samuel and Christopher, daughter, Amy and three grandchildren: Brianne, Connor, and Cody. Robin, a retired transit operator of twenty-five years loved people and travel and he loved to play tour guide for people new to the area. He was an active volunteer in the community and claimed a wide circle of friends. He is greatly missed. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 11th at 2pm at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses: 1170 West Street, Maple Ridge.

Passed away peacefully on August 1st, 2012. Patricia will be lovingly remembered by her family, husband Robert (Bob); 2 daughters, Vicki (Ian) and Chris (Vince); grandchildren, Jillian, Jenny, and Bobby; great granddaughter Marley; and sister Linda. Hazel was predeceased by her husband Dr. Derek John Hopkins in 1987. She is survived by her loving family – 3 children, Trish (Bob Doran), Brander (Marion) and Robert (Lisa), her grandchildren Matthew, Cameron, Sam (Jane) and Simon, Stephanie and twins Fraser and Trevin as well as brother-in-law Tom (Claire) and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She will be dearly missed by all of her family and friends who had the privilege of knowing her.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, cousin and friend on Tuesday, July 17, 2012 at MSA Hospital in Abbotsford after battling a lengthy illness. Born in the small rural town of Craven, Saskatchewan she met her life mate Elwood Percy and they followed the propane industry around Saskatchewan before moving to British Columbia in 1964, with sons Darryl & Kim and daughter Debra. Predeceased by infant son Robin, her parents Orval and Dora Rice and sister Madge, she is survived by husband Elwood, son Darryl (Edie), son Kim (Judy), daughter Debra, grandchildren Robin, Jesse, Jena, Josh, Kristen, Kody and Katlin, great grandchildren Trinity, John and Brea, sisters Carol (Norm), Dorothy (Curl), Gladys, Lillian (Lloyd) and brother Gordon (Elaine) along with numerous nieces and nephews. She was the consummate hostess and will be fondly remembered for her and EJ’s Sunday morning breakfasts that were always open to any family and friends who could get out of bed for the 8:00 am serving. Her roast beef dinners brought all the family home on a regular basis. We could always count on her to provide the time and place for friend & family get togethers and to lift our spirits with plentiful food, drink and so many desserts and sweets. Mom was a proud supporter and always there for her kids and then again for her grandchildren at early morning hockey practices, soccer games, ball games, ringette, lacrosse, karate, dance and countless school functions. She also enjoyed her multitude of gardens as well as her winter getaways down south with EJ and many friends. The family wishes to thank Dr. Miller, Dr. Grayling, Andrea, Susan and Anita along with all the staff of the Palliative Care Unit at the MSA Hospital for their patience, kindness and understanding throughout Mom’s brief stay. Also, a special thanks to Dr. Bale for his compassion and caring manner. At Mom’s request there will be a private memorial for family members and friends at the Ramada Inn, 36035 North Parallel Road, Abbotsford, on Thursday September 20, 2012 from 1:00 pm until 4:00 pm. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made in her memory to the Dr. Stuart Pavilion at the Mission General Hospital.
