A Message from the Premier __________ As Premier of the Province of British Columbia, it gives me great pleasure to welcome all the athletes, coaches, and their families to the 2012 BC Seniors Games in Burnaby. Sport not only plays an important role in personal development and physical well-being, but it is also a valuable element in maintaining healthy communities. These games present a fabulous opportunity for active seniors to participate in some healthy competition and meet others with similar interests. I want to commend all of this year’s participants for your enthusiasm and hard work in preparing for the Games. Thank you to all the event organizers, sponsors, and coaches not only for making this week-long competition possible, but also for supporting these athletes as they pursue active lifestyles. Since 1987, the B.C. Seniors Games have provided opportunities for British Columbia seniors to participate and compete, demonstrating their considerable athletic abilities. Ranging in age from 55 to 90-plus, the B.C. Seniors Games involve approximately 4,000 seniors participating in more than 25 different sports and activities. The hard work and accomplishments of these athletes not only benefit their own health, but inspire us all, providing a model for healthy, active lifestyle. The B.C. Seniors Games are truly a community celebration. They leave a legacy of goodwill, community pride, trained volunteers, and a positive economic impact. This year, for the first time, the City of Burnaby has the honour of hosting the Games and I have no doubt that it will rise to the occasion, making these 25th anniversary Games memorable. Our government is proud to support the B.C. Seniors Games through the Ministry of Community, Sport and Cultural Development. Best of luck to all athletes, coaches, and officials, and thank you to the citizens of Burnaby for your wonderful hospitality. Let the Games begin! Sincerely,
Ida Chong, FCGA Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development

Without your Board of Directors, Liaisons and all associated volunteers, who have worked so diligently and willingly given of their time these past 12 months, we would not be in our 25th year or embracing the largest 55+ BC Seniors Games in Canada. We also thank the Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development, our Funding Partner, our Corporate Partners, and Sponsors who believe in investing in the Seniors Games, giving the 55+ population throughout BC the opportunity for a healthy and active lifestyle. SPORT DESCRIPTIONS Five-pin Bowling _______
Golf ____________________
Five-pin bowling is a bowling variant which is played only in Canada, where most bowling alleys offer it, either alone or in combination with ten-pin bowling. It was devised around 1909 by Thomas F. Ryan in Toronto, Ontario.
Competing players (golfers), using many types of clubs, attempt to hit balls into each hole on a golf course while employing the fewest number of strokes. Golf is one of the few ball games that does not require a standardized playing area. Instead, the game is played on golf “courses”, each of which features a unique design, although courses typically consist of either nine or 18 holes.
Venue: Old Orchard Bowling Lanes
Venues: Burnaby Mountain Golf Course and Riverway Golf Course
Floor Curling ___________ A game designed for those who were no longer able to ice curl due to back and knee problems. There is no sweeping and it is warm! Wooden rocks with handles are used and the floor has shuffleboard wax on it. There are four people on a team just the same as ice curling with a skip, third, second and lead. The skip has a pointer stick to show the players where to aim the rock. The game is scored like ice curling. Venue: Bonsor Recreation Complex
Horseshoes ___________ Horseshoes is an outdoor game played between two people (or two teams of two people) using four horseshoes and two throwing targets (stakes) set in a sandbox area. The game is played by the players alternating turns tossing horseshoes at stakes in the ground, which are traditionally placed 40 feet (12.19 m) apart. Modern games use a more stylized U-shaped bar, about twice the size of an actual horseshoe. Venue: Central Park Pitch

The net is lower than most other racquet sports allowing for faster play. The game is played with a hard paddle and a wiffle ball, making the technique required for pickleball different than other sports.

It is played using a cue and 22 snooker balls: one white cue ball, 15 red balls and six balls of different colours: yellow, green, brown, blue, pink and black. Tennis _________________
Swimming is locomotion in water by self propulsion, usually with the goal to complete a given distance in the smallest amount of time. Competitive swimming consists of four different strokes. The different strokes one can swim in a race are the butterfly, breaststroke, freestyle (or front crawl), and backstroke. When all four strokes are done during a race, it is called medley swimming (otherwise known as the individual medley, or I.M.).
Tennis is a sport usually played between two players (singles) or between two teams of two players each (doubles). Each player uses a racket that is strung to strike a hollow rubber ball covered with felt past a net into the opponent’s court. Venue: B urnaby Tennis Club Central Valley
Venue: Central Park Pool
Table Tennis ________________ Two or four players hit a lightweight, hollow ball back and forth with rackets. The game takes place on a hard table divided by a net. Except for the initial serve, players must allow a ball played toward them only one bounce on their side of the table and must return it so that it bounces on the opposite side. Points are scored when a player fails to return the ball within the rules. Play is fast and demands quick reactions. Venue: Byrne Creek High School
