A Mountie from Mission is facing charges in connection with an off-duty fight outside a Pitt Meadows bar.

Sgt. Miriam Orynthia Jean Dickson, 43, faces two counts of assaulting a peace officer and one count each of resisting arrest and causing a disturDickson bance.

Charges against the former media spokesperson for the Mission RCMP were sworn on Tuesday in Port Coquitlam Provincial Court.

The charges stem from an “altercation” that took place outside Rooster’s Country Cabaret shortly after 2 a.m.

Sunday, June 3.

Ridge Meadows RCMP allege Dickson got in an argument with a man after leaving the bar.

Two uniformed RCMP officers, who were already patrolling the parking lot, intervened and tried to diffuse the situation, but were allegedly assaulted by her.

She was arrested and taken to cells.

A young Maple Ridge woman died in hospital Tuesday after taking an illegal drug police believe was ecstasy at a weekend party.

Ridge Meadows RCMP’s Serious Crimes Unit and the B.C. Coroner’s Service are investigating the 21-yearold’s death.

Paramedics, police and the Maple Ridge fire department were called to an apartment early Sunday after the woman was found unresponsive.

She was rushed to hospital, but passed away two days later.

Police allege the woman took MDMA, also known as ecstasy, during a night of drinking and partying.

H

er body ravaged by the effects of Multiple Sclerosis, Angel Twedt of Maple Ridge struggles with the simplest of tasks.

Legally blind, she lives with her two-yearold daughter Elle for weeks at end while her husband Greg toils the oil fields in northern Alberta.

Her life has been turned upside down since she was first diagnosed with MS last year. Confined to a wheelchair, the Twedt’s home is just another example of the barriers the young mother now faces. Her wheelchair is not only a constant reminder of her affliction with MS, it’s also preventing her from living her life with dignity, she says.

For the past 10 months, Twedt hasn’t been able to maneuver her wheelchair through the hallway that leads to the bathroom. Even if it did fit, the entrance to the bathroom is too narrow for her chair.

“It’s just been a struggle to get by every day,” says a tearful Twedt, who is now undergoing chemotherapy to help slow the effects of her MS. “It’s embarrassing to have ask someone for help to have a sponge bath.”

Making things even more difficult, Twedt’s medication costs run up to $62 a day, coupled with the expenses incurred renovating their home’s front porch with a ramp and a secure fence to keep their daughter from wandering off the property. The family has maxed out its credit.

She said selling their home and downsizing or renting would be both physically exhaustive, and prove tricky to find a home equipped to accommodate her wheelchair.

Twedt has been trying to access provincial government funds to help pay for the renovations needed to make her bathroom and kitchen more accessible.

The government initiated the Home Adaptations for Independence program in January of this year. The program is designed to aid people with disabilities, as well as seniors who need to renovate their homes for “accessible, safe

She has appealed her grant application, but has been informed that because of a high volume of them, her file is on hold until someone with the Home Adaptations for Independence is free to look into it further.

So she waits.

“After chemotherapy, I am very weak. I can’t do the things a normal mother does. I’m having a hard time just looking after my daughter,” says Twedt.

Fortunately for her, she has help.

A home support nurse helps her daily, and her father is around to pitch in, as well.

Then there’s Brett Williams, of Bremar Renovations. Williams was initially contacted to do an estimate on renovations based on Twedt’s application for funding. While he estimated the cost to fix the hallway, bathroom and kitchen to be closer to $25,000, he was able to reduce costs to get the bill closer to the grant figure.

Upon learning she was denied funding, Williams and a host of other local contractors have pitched in where they can, refurbishing the Twedt family kitchen so Angel could access the sink, cabinets and counter tops.

Grants of up to $20,000 are available, and the Twedt’s promptly filled out the paperwork.

The Twedt’s met the initial criteria of the program. They had less than $100,000 in household assets and were below the average household income for the area.

But Twedt was denied grant

funding based on the assessed value of their home. To be eligible, their home had to be under the Fraser Valley’s regional average of $388,000. The Twedt’s home came in at $416,000.

“I’m baffled by the whole thing,” explains Twedt, noting that her house was assessed based on properties located from as far away as

Hope, where home values are lower.

She said the program seems to be set up so people in the area are destined to be denied.

So Twedt is now making a plea to the public to help her “live with dignity.”

With the help of her father as well as her husband Greg, Twedt has set up a trust fund to help her pay the $15,000 bathroom refit.

She says they have no choice but to depend on the kindness of the public to help with the renovations.

“Anything the public can do would be great. I will help as much as I can. Right now we don’t have any options.”

But like most businesses, Williams can only do so much. He’s pleased the trust fund has been established and knows a number of trades people willing to donate their time once the funds have been raised.

For Twedt, access to her kitchen has brought back some normalcy to her life. It also reaffirms her faith in the community.

“It’s just fabulous. Something as simple as not being able to access your sink can be pretty discouraging. It was so generous of everyone.”

Car Care Man wants letters from sex offender to stop with Cyril Barry

THE CLASSIC CAR If you like anything to do with older cars, trucks, motorcycles or hotrods, now is the time of year for you. This love for nostalgic old iron is not just a male thing either as there are lots of ladies out there bitten by the same bug. In the last few years we’ve had numerous women owner’s of some very classic cars into the shop for various repairs of all sorts.

Living in Maple Ridge, we are very lucky to have the weekly Thursday evening car show hosted by the A&W at the corner of 228th and Lougheed, a must see for car lovers of all ages.

While some may see this as a nuisance and noisy event, those of us that drive or like old cars & hotrods it is as they used to say “the cat’s meow.� I see that other restaurants are jumping on the bandwagon and putting on car shows of their own. This is a good thing.

In this modern era of cookie cutter cars, computer controlled everything and AirCare regulations it is refreshing to see the old chrome plated cruisers, golden oldies and original hot rods.

These cars take us back a few years and remind us of a simpler time, for the youngsters they are just plain “cool� or “sweet.� The people that own and restore these old beauties are probably the most friendly group of individuals who you will ever meet, bursting with stories about their “ride.� They come from all walks of life and income levels, and all share one common bond.

That feeling of freedom and individuality while they drive their classic machine down the road.

To all those parents out there looking for something in common with their “know it all� teenagers, take ‘em to the next car show and let ‘em check out something that you both think is really cool. To the rest of you, who need something to get you off the couch this summer, take a drive to the east end of Haney some sunny Thursday evening and treat yourself to a feast of old iron, some really friendly folks and the best Root Beer in town. Remember to look at the cars only and don’t lean on them or touch them, unless the owner’s give you the heads up.

Look all you want, ask any questions but please don’t touch!

Remember when you’re driving down the road and you see someone driving an old classic car, give them some room and don’t crowd them.

Those of us that drive nice old cars are not in a race, old cars cannot stop on a dime like your new cookie cutter cars, not to mention that our cars weigh more, we drive slow because we stop slow.

Richard Richardson waiting sentencing

He set it aside as evidence for police.

By then he had learned to identify the envelopes.

They were always covered in cute stickers of hearts and owers and marked with childish stamps. “They looked like something you’d send your teenage sweetheart,â€? says Smith, who

received the latest letter two weeks ago.

They began arriving in January 2010, sent by a man who allegedly sexually assaulted Smith when he was 15 years old.

Smith, however, is helpless to stop them. “I’ve tried everything.�

He ďŹ rst notiďŹ ed police, then his parole ofďŹ cer and the courts.

A convicted sex offender, Richard Elbertson Richardson was charged in the 1980s for allegedly sexual assaulting Smith, but never convicted.

At present, Richardson, 60, is awaiting a sentence for pleading guilty to sexually assaulting a 40-year-old man, who

had been renting a room in his Maple Ridge home in 2009.

Smith claims the letters started to arrive after he was charged with arson for burning a trailer that belonged to his deceased parents and was stored on Richardson’s Maple Ridge property in 2008.

The letters include Richardson’s name, an address and phone number.

Smith believes Richardson got his current address through the courts.

Smith is forbidden from contacting Richardson, but remains frustrated that the man continues to send him letters. “I would just like them

Richardson could not have sent them because he can’t read or write.

Ridge Meadows RCMP issued a warning about Richardson in 2010 after he was charged with sexual assaulting his roommate.

At that time, police alleged Richardson had been approaching men while travelling on buses and targeted young men, especially those who have mental health issues.

After being charged with sexual assault, Richardson faced additional charges of breaching bail conditions twice.

In one instance, police found he had a roommate, and in a second, he was caught chatting with a teenage boy at the Haney Bus Loop.

Richardson has a criminal record that dates back to the early 1990s.

Two Maple Ridge men guilty in riot Two more men from Maple Ridge have pleaded guilty to charges stemming from last year’s Stanley Cup riot in Vancouver.

Michael David Anderson entered a plea Wednesday to one count of taking part in a riot in Vancouver Provincial Court.

On Tuesday, Andrew Glenn Cuthbert also admitted to rioting. Both will return to court to fix dates for sentencing hearings in October.

Connor Epp pleaded guilty to the same charge in May. He is due back in court Aug. 10.

A fourth Maple Ridge man charged with rioting – Jordan Houde – has yet to enter a plea.

Police have recommended charges against 225 people in connection with the June 15 rampage that erupted after the Vancouver Canucks lost Game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals to the Boston Bruins last year. Onlookers shot video and photos and posted them on social media, fueling what became a massive crowd-sourced police investigation.

About 30 rioters have pleaded guilty thus far.

Ecstasy from front “This is a very sad case,” said Supt. Dave Walsh.

“Initial information indicates the consumption of alcoholic beverages and illicit drugs may have played a prominent role in the death of this young woman. Police are working closely with health care professionals and the coroner on determining what caused this death.”

It has police issuing another warning to young adults and teens to steer clear of ecstasy.

“Any illicit drug is manufactured in back-room labs with no quality control, so the user has no idea what they are getting,” said Walsh.

“Ecstasy and methamphetamine are almost identical in chemical composition, are made with almost all of the same chemicals and both are extremely dangerous.”

MDMA is a synthetic, psychoactive drug that is chemically similar to the stimulant methamphetamine and the hallucinogen mescaline.

MDMA produces feelings of increased energy, euphoria, emotional warmth, and distortions in time, perception, and tactile experiences.

It is taken orally, usually as a capsule or tablet, and has been popular with young people at all-night parties, also known as raves, according to police.

The drug can be dangerous to overall health and, on rare occasions, become lethal. It has many of the same physical effects as other stimulants, and can increase heart rate and blood pressure, as well as other symptoms such as muscle tension, involuntary teeth clenching, nausea, blurred vision, faintness, and chills or sweating.

The young woman’s death has the mother of a teen who died from a similar overdose in 2008 calling for mandatory drug education and harm reduction programs.

“How many more youth have to die before we, as a community, come to the harsh reality that what we are doing isn’t working,” said Julie Raymond.

Her daughter Shannon died on July 26, 2008 after mixing ecstasy with alcohol.

Ask about pipeline Perhaps Premier Christy Clark sees a battle with Alberta — over revenue from allowing the Enbridge pipeline to use B.C. to link Alberta oil with tankers on the Pacific Ocean — as the last hope to rally voters in time for the spring 2013 election campaign.

It stands to reason, since the B.C. NDP has staked the opposed-to-pipeline position and the B.C. Conservatives have claimed the supportwith-conditions spot.

However, by demanding that B.C. receive oil royalties from profits made from what flows through the pipeline, Clark is simply catering to those who already support the Enbridge proposal.

Those opposed — and they include First Nations along the proposed route from Alberta to Kitimat — have said loud and clear it is not about money, but about inevitable environmental damage.

Grand Chief Edward John of the First Nations Summit political executive summed it up in a scathing press release of July 24, when he said the Clark B.C. Liberal government has missed the mark, stressing “B.C. First Nations’ traditional territories and pristine environment are not for sale.”

John reminded Clark of the Supreme Court of Canada’s stance that there is a legal requirement for governments to “consult and accommodate” First Nations regarding any and all land and resource development initiatives in their respective territories.

If First Nations cannot be convinced to allow a pipeline to be constructed through their territories — with or without scads of cash — the pipeline simply will not come to be.

With Clark’s demand having been rejected by Alberta Premier Alison Redford, with First Nations still on the sidelines and with strong opposition among the public, perhaps it would be wise for Clark to add a non-binding referendum question to the May 14, 2013 general election ballot.

A simple question — Are you in favour of the Enbridge pipeline proposal? — could produce results that tell the government of the day exactly which direction it should travel on this pipeline proposal.

Right to choose gaining momentum L

ooking back in history, the struggle to attain the freedom for individuals to make important choices about fundamental issues in life has been one of slow progress.

For a long time there was no freeHealth Care dom of speech or Marco Terwiel religion. If you expressed an opinion contrary to what the government, the church and most people around you wanted you to believe or do, you were ostracized, or worse, ended up in jail or were condemned to death.

The freedom for women to be recognized even as persons and to be able to vote, the freedom to choose to give birth or not, all were achieved after a long and difficult struggle against strong opposition.

I have never met anyone who would opt to get Alzheimer’s and no longer be able to recognize any of their loved ones, nor any volunteers to suffer a major stroke, depriving one of the ability to speak, to become totally dependent on others to be fed and receive personal care.

Yet thousands suffer such a fate.

All too many times I have cared for these unfortunate people, knowing that they did not really want the kind of care I was obliged, as a doctor,

to provide in the absence of written instructions to the contrary. I had known many of them while they still had the freedom and ability to give explicit directives what life-prolonging measures they would find acceptable or reject if they lost the facility making those choices.

Most would not write down their wishes.

Once a person has lost a healthy brain and sound communication skills without leaving a legal document directing me how to care for them, I am left with the duty to preserve life at all cost, no matter how futile and contrary to what I suspect they would have chosen.

Many people think that granting power of attorney to a trusted family member or friend would safeguard against a prolonged and miserable dying process.

Unfortunately this document does not give that power where it concerns a person’s health care.

With all the fabulous techniques to help people, we can also prolong the dying process for weeks or months without any prospect of cure or improving the quality of life.

But this is not necessarily a desirable course of action, defying mother nature when your number is up.

Anyone has the freedom to choose and put in writing if you would accept or reject being tube-fed if you can no longer swallow after a stroke. You can choose if you want to be resuscitated

or not in case of a cardiac arrest. You can decide in advance if you want or not to find you are permanently connected to a ventilator, unable to speak, swallow until you finally die despite these life-prolonging techniques. And there many other important reasonable choices you can make before it is too late to do so.

There are excellent documents available to help people making those choices. Fraser Health developed a very useful booklet called “My Voice,” available just for the asking, at no cost.

Many doctors have them available in their offices or ask the people at the public health office, or go on line and connect to advancecareplanning.ca.

Completing these documents will protect the person against unwanted interventions and prevent forcing the family having to watch their loved one dying a very prolonged and miserable death.

Completing a written directive and giving it to your doctor and your next of kin will eliminate the need to ever avail oneself of an assisted suicide in most cases once the legislation will allow such a choice.

Withholding certain potentially life-saving measures, according to the patient’s wishes, will facilitate a more humane end.

Yet there are circumstances where the availability of the choice of assisted suicide would be the most appropriate one.

Re: Pitt residents still signing tax petition (The News, July 25).

“I can assure you that we will be responsible in the decision making process and we understand the need to maintain certain service levels, protect our assets now and into the future while remaining fiscally prudent and sustainable.”

That is the last sentence of the letter that Mayor Deb Walters has sent to all the signers of the tax petition. Our mayor is stating that she plans to continue to spend freely and we should trust her to look after our interests. Well, spending us into a hole we may never get out of isn’t how you run a city or a business.

The proposed four percent tax increases for the next five years is a sure sign that the mayor is on another planet.

Who of you, Pitt Meadows taxpayers, have gotten four percent annual pay or pension increases in the last five years?

Over the last 15 years, we’ve gone through good and bad economic times. Not once can I recall our property taxes holding the line or decreasing.

When times are bad, we get hit with bigger tax increases so the city can ‘maintain service levels.’ When times are good, they continue to spend freely.

The tax petition has been presented to council. How loud do we need to be before the city will hear and listen to us?

In the jurisdictions where people can make that choice, there are no reports of abuse, because the legislation is very precise who is eligible to make that choice.

Currently, one person had been given that right by a clear-thinking judge, but that right has been taken away again by the government appealing that decision.

Therefore, nobody in Canada has that right. But the movement to attain that right is gaining momentum, and I am sure will come about to benefit courageous people like Gloria Taylor.

‘Firearms save lives every day’ EDITOR, THE NEWS:

Re: Semi-auto guns available anywhere (The News, July 27).

After some insane public attack, it is common to blame the gun. If only no gun were available, we are told, people could not run amok and harm others.

No one needs a handgun, is the other common refrain.

It is a fact that handguns were once legal for hunting in Canada. They should be again. More important is that good people need firearms because bad people will always have access to them.

Firearms are valuable pieces of our history. I like the sense of responsibility and discipline that accompanies the safe handling of firearms.

I enjoy sharing my passion for firearms with others by teaching pistol and rifle shooting, and hunter safety courses.

I especially like military firearms and pistols – they are classic and just plain fun to shoot.

When enthusiasts purchase firearms and ammunition, they support the Canadian economy.

I like gun people because those raised around firearms and brought up with the respect and discipline that comes with firearms use are the best friends and neighbors a person could want.

For some, contact with firearms evokes fear. Perhaps their experience with

firearms has been limited to hearing about, or experiencing violence. Their reaction to firearms owners is horror.

Aside from being misplaced, that reaction is wrong. People who own shotguns, rifles, handguns, and military collectibles share the revulsion when innocents are killed by guns.

Some people with political agendas will comment that no one needs a hobby that involves dangerous things like handguns. But firearms ownership is much more than a mere hobby and it isn’t the gun itself that is potentially dangerous – it is the person that makes the difference.

Firearms are an important part of Canadian heritage and culture.

“More important is that good people need firearms because bad people will always have access to them.”

Firearms owners are no more willing to give up range practice than others would be willing to give up religious participation.

I want to make it perfectly clear: firearms folks do not bear any guilt for the actions of the rare insane individuals who engage in violence.

We are not the same people.

Some argue that only the police, military, and elites should be permitted to use handguns. They aren’t any different than the rest of us.

The police and military have jobs, which sometimes and rarely for police, make using firearms necessary.

But tell a family on a remote homestead or in an inner city apartment that a firearm isn’t important for their safety.

Tell it to the fellow who has to take his business receipts to the bank late at night, or has had his jewelry or grocery store robbed in broad daylight.

Firearms, especially handguns, in the right hands, save lives every day, most often without firing a shot.

In fact, the actions of evildoers make it perfectly clear that there is a need for good people to be able to protect themselves.

Often the places chosen for mass attacks are selected because no one there is expected to be carrying a firearm.

Denying legal access to handguns and declaring gunfree zones merely offers easy opportunities for those with ill-intent.

Sharp sticks, gasoline, knives, and cars can all be dangerous in the wrong hands. The key is the person, not the instrument.

Some claim that we register our cars and our dogs so we should do the same with guns, as if doing that would protect public safety.

It never has been the case that registering anything prevented its misuse. No registration card or firearms license ever stopped a ‘run amok,’ and banning legal access to any firearms would only make such acts worse.

Firearms are not going away, nor should they.

Firearms are a part of Canada’s culture and heritage and will continue to be well into the future.

Canada has seen its fair share of violent gun crimes, but is it possible that there is a reason that we see them happening here a little less than our neighbours to the south? Something to think about, perhaps, before we start doling out handguns to anyone who would like one.

and socialized properly from a young age, but the problems that occur stem from the owners who are raising them. It takes a lot of time, effort, and patience to properly train animals, and yet it’s so easy to see how many owners allow their dogs to basically do what they want, when they want.

Malfesi and other members of Ridge Canoe and Kayak Club scrutinize videos of world championships as part of a constant attempt to balance strength and speed with the perfect paddling technique that will move a kayak through the water most efficiently.

While Van Koeverden gets ready for the K-1 (single-person kayak) 1,000-metre event, Malfesi is preparing for national championships in Nova Scotia this month, when he’ll compete in the one- and two-person kayak events over 200-, 500- and 1,000-metre distances.

But that’s just a shortterm goal.

Four years from now, Malfesi wants to be paddling for a gold medal when the Summer Olympics roll again in Brazil in 2016.

“I just like the way you push yourself to the limit basically … and it’s fun,” he says.

“You can push yourself as an individual and as part of a team, but as you push yourself, you’re also pushing others.”

Winning a spot on the nation senior team and qualifying for a spot for the next Summer Games is an arduous process that requires year-round training and getting to several meets a year. Malfesi, 18, is already on the senior development team.

The Games, though, already are inspiring.

“It’s pretty cool to see them and realize that they’re just normal people.”

And if normal people can win medals, so can Malfesi.

“I was watching [swimmer] Brent Hayden and that was pretty sweet.

“He’s from Mission and able to do it, so why

Malfesi, studying engineering at SFU, has been in competitive kayaking for seven years. Two years ago, he won the K1 1,000-metre event at the junior national championships in Regina and last year came 14th in the K-4, 1,000-metre event at the Junior World Championships in Brandenburg, Germany. His favourite event is the 1,000 metres.

In the shorter distances, which require a higher stroke rate, raw power works best.

“I’m more of an endurance person.”

While Malfesi is stoked, the executivedirector of CanoeKayak BC hasn’t seen a huge Olympic-inspired interest in the sport, Mary Jane Abbott says from her Maple Ridge office.

With the weather as bad as its been, many clubs were struggling with membership re-

cruitment this summer.

“But I don’t know that I would say we’ve seen any impact from the Olympics yet. I think because it [canoe and kayak events] hasn’t happened yet.”

But CanoeKayak BC is reaching out to get more kids on to the water.

Its Canoe Kids on the Road program visits communities throughout B.C. to try to spark the creation of local canoeing clubs, with an attempt to reach out to First Nations communities.

“Canoeing is one of their traditional sports and they just need some help rediscovering that,” Abbott said.

This year, one of their summer students (for the road program) is Cory Hamilton, who came second fastest to Adam Van Koeverden in Olympic qualifying.

“So we’re pretty excited about the fact he’ll be there to be their colour commentator.”

Abbott said that canoe and kayak club membership is about 5,000, B.C.-wide, spread throughout 19 clubs.

Paddling Club recently hosted the B.C. Summer Games at its base on the Alouette River, while the national championships take place Aug. 22-25 in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.

Abbott said the 25-plus category is the fastest-growing and most stable area of membership.

by M o n i s h a M a r t i n s staff reporter The City of Pitt Meadows will be updating a bylaw that protects municipal staff and councillors from lawsuits.

Although the Local Government Act contains protection against personal liability, the city’s solicitors have recommended replacing an existing bylaw with one that adds another layer of protection against legal action from angry residents or political rivals.

“The original bylaw is

from 1999 and has some old language in it,” said Pitt Meadows director of finance Dean Rear.

“This is updating it.”

The new bylaw will require anyone suing the city to prove “gross negligence,” which means showing the defendant not only misrepresented something, but did so dishonestly or maliciously.

The proposed bylaw would, in turn, protect the city from having to defend staff or councillors, both former and current, who have been found guilty of dishonest, gross negligence, malicious or wilful misconduct.

Mayor Deb Walters said it’s important to have a bylaw that protects city staff and coun-

cil members.

People won’t volunteer or work for the city if there is a chance that they are going to get sued, she added.

“As well, if someone goes out deliberately and is dishonest or is malicious, I don’t think we should be protecting them.”

In a letter, city solicitors Murdy and McAllister noted the bylaw may also reduce unwarranted or frivolous claims by citizens who are hostile to inspections, bylaw enforcement or people who represent the municipality.

“Staff and officials may carry out their functions with more confidence,” the law firm noted.

The proposed indemnification bylaw was

discussed Tuesday at a committee meeting, but won’t go to a final vote until council returns from summer break.

Several Metro Vancouver cities, including Richmond and North Vancouver, have similar bylaws in place, but most haven’t been updated for years.

No seat will be a bad one to cheer on the second annual Rotary Duck Race, Sunday.

The course for this year’s race will be longer and closer to the north bank of the Alouette River in Maple Ridge Park, where spectators will have a clear view. “I’ve lengthened the course of the river this year by about 200 feet and we’ve moved the start gate into calmer waters so that when the ducks start, they won’t be bunched together.

They’ll split up at the beginning,� said Peter Davies, river coordinator for the Rotary Duck Race.

The ďŹ nish line will also be moved closer to the north bank.

Davies is hoping that by making these changes the ducks will oat down the middle of the river to the six inch ďŹ nish tube that will be in plain sight of the spectators.

Last year the ducks bunched up at the ďŹ nish gates.

This year Davies has set up deectors at the ďŹ nish gates.

And after a trial run two weeks ago, with only a minimal amount of ducks, it seems like all is going according to plan. “What the wild card is and what we have no control over is the water conditions,� said Davies.

Every couple of days

for the past month, he has been checking the level and ow of the river in preparation for the race.

Last year, water conditions changed two days prior to the race and it had a major effect on it because more water was in the river than what was expected. “This year the water level has been relatively stable,� said Davies. “A couple of weeks ago it did go down a little bit, and then it came back up and it’s maintained itself.�

The Laityview Scouts will also be helping out on race day by making sure there are no obstructions in the water for the ducks to get hung up on.

Race takes place on Sunday at 1 p.m.

A family fun day will start in the park at 10 a.m. and go until 3 p.m.

An additional 250 ducks will be available to purchase up to ďŹ ve minutes before the race.

The race will start by the horse shoe pitch by the parking lot along 132nd Avenue and the river will be closed to tubers at that point for a couple of hours.

The race will ďŹ nish at 232nd Street, past the gravel parking lot.

Davies expects it will take 10 to 15 minutes for the last duck to cross the ďŹ nish line.

The grand prize is a 2012 Jeep Wrangler Sport 4x4 provided by Maple Ridge Chrysler and valued at $25,995.

House B&E An antique box with money was stolen Tuesday during a break-in at a house in Pitt Meadows.

The house was broken into sometime between midnight and 6 a.m. on July 21 through an unlocked door.

Residents were asleep inside and not aware someone had entered their house.

The thieves took the box, which contained an undisclosed amount of cash and personal items.

“This theft is particularly alarming, as thieves do not normally enter occupied homes,” said Supt.

Dave Walsh.

“A majority of residential break-ins occur during daylight hours, when the occupants are out, not in the middle of the night, when citizens are usually inside. In this case it appears the thief, or thieves, were able to find an unlocked door and decided to commit the crime.”

Police want to remind citizens to lock their doors at all times, even when inside.

A Pitt Meadows farmer won the support of council Tuesday to fill a piece of land he owns to improve it for farming.

Council forwarded the soil deposit application to fill 2.72 hectares of a 3.96 hectare parcel to the Agricultural Land Commission, with a set of conditions that include inspecting the soil at its source and submitting monthly reports on the quality of the fill to city staff.

Although he has owned the property since 1988, Brent Mehl has had little success growing cranberries on his property at the north end of Harris Road. The yield he gets from the property is never enough to cover costs.

half of it for topsoil and trucking in loose fill of 46,000 cubic metres, Mehl will be able to enhance soil capabilities to support a wider range of crops or plant a tree nursery.

Some councillors were reluctant to approve the fill application at first, but Mehl reassured them he was not going to fill the site and stop farming.

“I just can’t do cranberries anymore,” he told council.

“This isn’t a separate piece of property that I am going to fill and flip. This is my home.”

The city’s agricultural advisory committee could not agree on whether to support the fill application. Some on the committee felt the land was perfectly suited to growing cranberries.

Coun. Janis Elkerton said the advisory committee was mostly concerned about the quality of fill that would be dumped on site when the application was discussed at a meeting in June.

“I’d like to see conditions to monitor soil deposit,” she said before voting to support the application.

“We have to help our farmers.”

If the application is approved by the provincial Agricultural Land Commission, 46,000 cubic metres of fill will be trucked to the site over three years.

The fill contractor will pay the city $4 for every load trucked to the property.

Renos to Maple Ridge Hyundai could be first of changes to area

t’s had the corner of Tamarack Lane and Lougheed Highway all to itself for decades, seeing life first as an auto wrecking yard, then changing to its current purpose as an auto dealership.

Maple Ridge Hyundai is an island of automotive in a sea of green, surrounded

by Kanaka Creek Regional Park, Rieboldt Park and Albion flats. Just for good measure, Spencer and Kanaka creeks run nearby.

Time is on the dealership’s side, though, says Dave Wyant, who along with brother Vaughn, owns the dealership as part of the Vaughn Wyant Automotive Group.

Maple Ridge district wants to develop the Albion flats just to the east of the dealership, although just what form that will take remains to be seen. Whatever happens, the Lougheed corridor will change at some point.

“I think with the development that’s going to be coming down here eventually, I think we’ll be right in line with the growth in the community.

“If they do the Albion flats development plan, for us it’s a home run.”

It’s just a matter of the district figuring out what actually will go into the area, he adds.

dealership in September 1994 after moving from Saskatchewan and bringing with them the expertise gained from their auto presence in that province,

where the group owns Ford, Mitsubishi, Audi and Volvo dealerships in the Saskatoon area, as well as dealerships in Kelowna and Vernon.

Wyant is a well-known name in the prairie province. Dave’s older brother Gordon is Minister of Justice and the Attorney General for the Province of Saskatchewan, while another brother, Raymond, is a retired chief justice in Manitoba.

Another brother, Peter, works in oil and gas technology for the Saskatchewan government.

The dealership sold Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Eagle and Plymouth products under the name Super Dave’s (Golden Ears Motors) in the 1990s and 2000s, then in September 2009 switched to Hyundai. Sales have doubled since then.

“When the opportunity to nab the Hyundai franchise was available, we grabbed it. Great cars, great build, everything,” Wyant said.

The Elantra was named the top Canadian and North American car for 2012.

The old name is still around, however.

The actual name of the dealership is still Super Dave’s Golden Ears Motors Ltd., operating as Maple Ridge Hyundai, which allows the use of Super Dave’s from time to time.

Part of the agreement when signing on with Hyundai Canada in 2009 was to put up a new building. It was the first time Hyundai allowed the com-

pletion of a new building after a dealership opened, Wyant pointed out.

Part of the building process required developing a storm-water management plan for the municipality to ensure runoff effects into the creeks are minimized.

The district has helped in that process, as well as with removing the land from the Agricultural Land Reserve a few years ago.

A week ago, the new building, about 13,000 square feet, was completed and staff moved in and now are enjoying the air-conditioned accommodation.

Saying goodbye to the old building, about six decades old and which gets torn down next week, won’t be a sad occasion.

“That old building wasn’t the brand identification that anybody wanted,” Wyant said.

“We’re so happy to be out of it.” In the summer, temperatures would climb to 40 C inside.

The new building has eight service bays with room for two more to accommodate the growth that’s expected.

Currently, 28 people work at Maple Ridge Hyundai, although Wyant predicts that will rise to 40 or 50.

“Growing, growing, growing,” he says.

The viewscape will also improve once the old building goes.

“When the old building comes down, when people drive by, they’re going to see the new building, all the cars and beautiful park behind them.

“It’s going to be very visually exciting.”

Coreopsis, perfect garden filler W

hat are you supposed to do with those big gaps in your garden beds, the ones where the weeds seem to grow faster than the shrubs around them, or the voids that catch Aunt Millie’s eye, inducing her to buy you a garden gnome or peeing-boy fountain to tastefully flesh-out your landscape. Gardening So is it really worth Mike Lascelle the risk of having blueribbon thistles or gifted garden ornaments that make you cringe on sight, or should you just bite the bullet and do something with your black hole of a garden?

Many of you have at least tried to remedy the situation and the first plants we usually start with are summer flowers or annuals, because they are our least expensive option.

But given this year’s dismal weather, the petunias, lobelia, alyssum and marigolds (or ‘slug chow,’ as they are better known) have been less than stellar and many people are already replacing them.

Of course, we keep blaming this on the unusual weather, but by my reckoning we have had four wet springs in a row, so I see a definite pattern developing.

There is a permanent solution here and it involves the introduction of a reliable perennial that many of us overlook simply because it is so common.

Coreopsis, or Tickseed, will cost you a little more initially, although a nine centimetre pot is about the same price as a premium summer flower – the difference being that they

As a general rule, they prefer part to full sun (so I won’t be able to help you with those shaded corners) and evenly moist soil that isn’t excessively wet through winter.

They are long-blooming (with the average being June through to September), make good cut flowers on a smaller scale and are not prone to pests and diseases.

Flower colour ranges from gold to burgun-

dy-red (‘Limerock Ruby’) and pale butter yellow to a peachy-pink (‘Limerock Dream’), so there’s bound to be at least one that suits your personal taste.

Like any plant genus, there are always going to be some that are better than others, but on the whole, coreopsis are pretty reliable plants that really do deserve a place in your garden.

Here are just a few of my personal favourites.

• Coreopsis verticillata ‘Moonbeam’ – This 1992 Perennial Plant of the Year is a perfect blending perennial, much in part to its pale yellow daisy blooms which seem to compliment any colour. The fine fern-like foliage never overwhelms adjacent plants and butterflies are drawn to it like a magnet.

‘Moonbeam’ grows 30 to 45 cm high and wide.

‘Zagreb’ is a darker yellow flowered cultivar of the same species and an RHS Award of Garden Merit winner – both are hardy to Zone 4.

• Coreopsis rosea ‘American Dream’ – This compact tickseed forms a dense spreading clump smothered by soft pink daisies (with contrasting yellow centers) from June to September. It makes a good flowering groundcover and usually goes to seed by midsummer, at which time you can lightly shear off the tops and it will happily return to flowering form. Grows 20-40 cm high and is hardy to Zone 4.

• Coreopsis grandiflora ‘Early Sunrise’ – The most common variety of coreopsis grandiflora with large semi-double blooms of golden yellow from early summer to fall with deadheading. The late season flowers should be removed to allow plants to conserve the energy needed to overwinter, otherwise they literally flower to death. Grows 50 cm high by 45-60 cm wide. Hardy to Zone 4.

Golden chance to shine in U.S. softball Ridge Meadow’s softball stalwarts land coveted scholarships

F

or most, graduation not only means the end of high school, it’s the conclusion of their competitive careers. The glory days of competing and practicing five to six days a week is replaced by Wednesday night recreation leagues.

But for a pair of Ridge Meadow’s softball players, graduation means another step in their playing careers.

Andrea Sitter, a left-handed lead-off hitter, and Rebeka Allen, who pitches and plays the hot corner, are taking their talents south of the boarder this fall.

Sitter is heading to the state of Texas, where she will suit up for the Trinity Valley Cardinals while Allen will head to the great state of Kansas to play for the Seward

Saints, both in NJCAA Division I schools.

It’s an opportunity both girls have been striving for since they first picked up a glove when they were kids.

“It exciting to go to a new place,” says Sitter, who is following in her sister’s footsteps of heading to the U.S. to play softball.

“It’s a great opportunity to get an education and keep playing the game I love. I’m looking forward to the whole college atmosphere.”

Allen admits she’s nervous about the next step in her career, but knows once she’s on the diamond, the butterflies will give way to her competitive nature.

“There’s a lot of good ball players down there. It’s a higher intensity level, but I was really impressed with the coaches. You learn quickly at this level,” says Allen.

Both Ridge Meadows Minor Softball players were selected to play on a newly formed Synergy Gold select team, comprised of the association’s best 17- and 18-year-olds.

Coach Tom Bowen said the idea was to showcase B.C.’s best in the competitive and

scholarship-driven recruiting tournaments in the U.S. last fall.

“You have to stand out, that’s for sure,” says Bowen, a Ridge Meadows coach for more than 16 years. “You don’t want to go down their and get your butt kicked.”

“They wouldn’t be intimidated by going down to the U.S. Rather, they look forward to the chance.”

Bowen says both Sitter and Allen clearly rose to the occasion, a big reason they were added to the select team.

Both players say it will take some time getting used to not seeing each other every day at practice or on game day. The years of good-natured horseplay will now give way to coaches and trainers who are paid to win.

Both players had opportunities to head to bigger schools in even bigger cities, but chose their teams, in part, based on their desire to live and get an education in a smaller town.

“I’m not a California girl,” laughs Sitter.

Both players thank their families for the years of support, as well as their coaches.

Synergy Gold coach Kim Brooks, who played for the Oklahoma Sooners, used her background to not only improve their playing skills, but helped guide the pair through the rigorous and highly competitive process of landing a scholarship. From building a resume to compiling video, Brooks helped steer Sitter and Allen in the right direction.

“It’s so rewarding to see them live out their dreams,” says Brooks.

Three categories of strength training I

f you have been watching the Olympic lifting competition on TV, one thing you may have noticed, besides the large amount of weight the competitors lift and the precarious way they sometimes struggle with the weight, is the muscular build of the athletes.

Many people expect that these weight lifters should look very muscle-bound like body builders, but they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t.

They are, of course, more muscular than average people but they are often much slimmer looking than one might expect.

Yet, the world records for Olympic lifters are in the 400-pound (for women) to 600-pound (for men) range.

Wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t a strong person like that have more muscle mass like a body builder?

There is a reason for this effect and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m just using the difference between body builders and Olympic lifters to illustrate the point.

Strength training is usually broadly categorized in three different realms. The method you use to train with depends on the end result you want to attain.

The three areas are generally divided into Strength, Hypertrophy and Endurance.

Hypertrophy means growing the size of a muscle and is the common idea people have when they think of weight training.

In fact many women still avoid weight training because they are afraid they will begin to look bulky like body builders.

However in order to produce this effect, a number of conditions must be present.

First, testosterone plays a major role in developing muscle mass and girth, so this type of training really wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t affect women and pre-pubescent

boys.

Second, in order to stimulate growth in the muscle, you must cause micro-damage to the muscle by repeatedly using the muscle until failure through four to 10 repetitions of a set of lifts.
