Classic Collection A vintage car collector keeps a lifetime of memories alive and well in his Castlegar garage

S

ome people may hang onto stuff, like the old butter churn, wringer washer or milk separator from the kinfolk’s farm, or a poster, lampshade, or hardware store calendar from 1938.

But Greg Sahlstrom has taken collecting family heirlooms to a whole new level.

Besides all of the above, and more, the retired self-proclaimed “grease monkey” has eight immaculately restored vintage vehicles tucked into a dome-shaped garage on his Castlegar acreage. All are in as-new running condition, and one of them has been in the Sahlstrom family longer than he has: the 1928 Chev Touring car.

Greg’s father homesteaded in the 1920s on a mountainside acreage in what used to be called Kinnaird. He bought the touring car in Spokane in the early ‘30s to be used as a farm vehicle. He didn’t know how to drive, but drove it home after five-minute instructions on how to step-on-this-peddle and pull-on-that-lever. ➤ Above: Greg Sahlstrom shows off the Packard’s “straight 8” engine with its ceramic manifold. That was in 1930-something and the old Chev has remained in the family ever since.

“My father chopped it into a little truck. In those days, we never threw anything away.

We used the back seat for a couch.”

The Chev became Greg’s first restoration project, some 40 years ago.

“I learned a lot with that first project — like not to paint with lacquer because lacquer comes off.”

The Chev is one of the last of the Touring Cars. “Touring” meant there were no roll-up windows.

Greg’s next project was a 1930 Model A Deluxe Roadster. It has a cute rumble seat in the back and is painted a robin egg blue.

“I found it in Crawford Bay 30 years ago.”

After restoration, the Model A took home a number of Vintage Car trophies. Greg has driven it about 10,000 miles since.

“I haven’t had it out in three or four years, but plan to license and insure it this year.”

In the garage, behind the Model A, is a 1948 Mercury Businessman Coupe, the only car in the shop that Greg didn’t fully restore, but purchased as is.

“There were only 55 of them ever made in 1948. There is no back seat. It’s a big compartment for the Fuller Brush man to place his wares. There’s likely less than 10 of them left in the world.”

Squeezed into a corner of Greg Sahlstrom’s garage in Castlegar are a 1918 and 1976 Cadillac, a 1956 Ford Fairlane and a 1930 Packard.

Studebaker Goldenhawk, which Greg restored twice, as he wasn’t happy with it the first time. The gold and white colour is close to original.

“The interior came from a guy in Nashville who specializes in Studebakers. It’s the one we drive a lot,” he said.

It won Best in Class at last year’s Nelson show. This particular one was Number 496 off the assembly line, and ran on the Bonneville Salt Flats.

“Factory supercharged under the hood; 275 horsepower out of the box. I had it at 140 mph.”

Taking up a good chunk of the space in Greg’s garage is a 1976 Cadillac convertible and a 1918 Cadillac Seven-passenger Touring.

The ’76 has a massive 500-cubic-inch motor with front wheel drive, all power with original paint.

Greg doesn’t own the 1918 Caddy but is storing it for a friend. This particular car was used by General Eisenhower when he was parade marshal in the 1952 Rose Bowl parade.

Behind the 1918 Cadillac is a baby boomer’s dream car: a 1956 Ford. ➤

One cannot look at it without conjuring up images of drive-ins and Happy Days.

Greg rebuilt the engine, transmission and brakes and added the white and coral interior so it would be exactly as it was when new.

“It’s fun to drive,” he says. “It has a wonderful set of pipes. Wide block Fords have a special sound.”

Next to the Ford is a 1930 Packard Club Sedan.

He doesn’t say it’s his favourite, but . . .

“I learned to drive between a 28 Chev and a 28 Packard.”

There wasn’t much left of the Packard after his father finished with it. It had been chopped down and made into a bush truck and hay wagon, used for hauling hay, manure and doing farm work.

Summer It took Greg eight years to Car Shows restore it to its original grandeur.

“I looked for parts for 25 years June 9 before I started restoring it. They Smoke `n Steel Show & thought I was crazy.”

Shine, Trail The Packard was “such quality,” in its day.

Smoke n Steel evening cruise It comes with its own automatic lube job. “Pull daily to Aug. 23 lubricate,” a little sign says. The A&W Cruisin for a Cure, lever lubricates 43 points on the Castlegar chassis. The manifold is ceramic, and the straight-eight engine Sept 9 Queen City Cruise, Nelson runs so smooth, “you can balance a loonie on the cylinder head Sept. 22 while it’s idling.”

Pass Creek Fall Fair Car Show The motor hadn’t been turned over since last fall, but to prove Sept. 21-23 how perfect the car ran, Greg Annual Fall Campout and started it up. It hummed to life like Show and Shine, Creston a startled bee hive.

The maroon paint is finished with a wood grain metal trim.

“That’s the way it was and it is 100 per cent correct.”

He is particularly proud of the Packard’s interior. Seats are finished in English wool broadcloth; and there’s a rack behind the front seat for hanging a picnic or lap blanket. Bud vases hang on either side of the back walls above little built-in vanities.

Anyone wanting to restore a Packard today will have a difficult time finding parts, Greg said.

“There just isn’t any more (Packards) around. You need to find another collector.”

Does he plan to restore anymore cars?

Actually, he’s taken up the mandolin.

With all his cars in immaculate running order, Greg’s only problem now is deciding which one to take to a Bluegrass Jamboree.

Mark your calendars people! There is a buzz resonating around this year’s fourth annual Columbia Basin Culture Tour (CBCT) creating major excitement for the area’s best tour yet.

On August 11–12, from 10am to 5pm, Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance (CKCA) hosts a selfdirected and free-of-charge tour around the entire basin exposing the area’s creative minds and offering a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the many cultural venues that reside in every little nook and cranny of this region.

This unique-in-BC concept allows the public to take a peek into the world of galleries, studios, museums and off-the-beaten-track private homes where art is spawned and magical things are created. It is the only culture tour in British Columbia of its kind, and thanks to a handful of very dedicated volunteers, it is right here, in our rather large backyard.

“It is a fantastic event. You end up in wonderful hidden places with people creating beautiful art,” says Jacquie Hamilton, CKCA chair.

Though the event is relatively new — the first was in August 2009 — it boasts upwards of 4000 visitors a year at over 90 venues. The CKCA, who spearheads the event, came up with the event’s concept after a member suggested modeling it after a similar one held in Vermont. After receiving funding from Columbia Basin Trust, CKCA organized the tour and now markets the event through brochures, local ads, Articulate magazine and a comprehensive website.

heritage in the community,” Hamilton explains.

Here is how it works: The public can pick up a full-coloured directory from a number of different outlets all over the area and then simply use the detailed map to plan their personalized tour. The tour is massive and covers a large geographical area, so it is wise to choose an area and go from there.

During the event, private studios are open to the public and public museums and galleries generally offer free admission, on-site performances and demonstrations. Bring the whole family as there are great events for kids and interactive projects at some events.

If history is more your scene, there are historians and cultural ambassadors offering tours, lectures and interpretive displays that add a teaching element to the tour.

For artists and art collectors, the culture tour is an especially important event as it allows the public to purchase art work directly from the artist — a rare opportunity for local artists who often have limited outlets to show their work, and usually work on a consignment basis.

For those of you a bit wet behind the ears in terms of art, have no fear, this is the perfect event to learn a few things about local art and artists and see what the area has to offer.

“The CBCT aims to presents arts, culture and heritage to a wider audience in a welcoming environment. We want to promote the arts and increase public awareness of the quality and diversity of art created in the area to the entire public, not just those specifically involved in the arts community,” Hamilton explains.

Hamilton has a special relationship with CBCT. Not only is she chair of CKCA, the association who has made the event come to life, but she also participates in the tour as part of the Selkirk Spinners and Weavers Guild, a non-profit group that has been very active in the community.

“The Weaver’s Guild hosts an event at the Doukhobor Discovery Centre in Castlegar (formerly the Doukhobor Museum). There are multiple people spinning, offering a rare opportunity to see a variety of spinning styles. The event sees tourists in their own community and also sees both deliberate and accidental tourists.”

Hamilton has given the event a lot of her own time and energy, and she plays the role of organizer, artist and public participant.

In 2011, Hamilton’s itinerary included a stop in Robson at the studio of talented watercolour artist and fellow spinner Sandra Donohue, and a tour through the beautiful Slocan Valley that landed her at Evelyn Kirkaldy’s open-frame, log artist’s studio after a drive up a rather treacherous road, “The adventure of going somewhere unknown is half the fun!” Hamilton says.

If you are more in the market for useable art, there is an abundance of useful art venues on the tour.

There are numerous potters, fiber artists and crafters displaying their wares.

Seeing the art created and interacting with artists in their own habitat is probably why the event seems to grow exponentially each year. It’s a unique opportunity to experience the art and bring a little piece of the event home.

The CBCT covers the entire Columbia Basin from Grand Forks in the West, to Fernie in the East, to Valemount in the North, and all the stops in between including: Rossland, Castlegar, Trail, Nelson, Creston,

Cranbrook, Invermere, Golden, Revelstoke, and Nakusp. It is a great event for those who want to stay close to home, or for those looking for a mini-vacation further away.

Artists make this area so culturally diverse and the CBCT gives us local residents a rare opportunity to see art created, in the area where it is inspired. It is an excellent way to see parts of this region that might be less trodden.

So no excuses, grab a brochure, pack up the family, and hit the road.

For myself, I think a few girlfriends, some road bikes, and a picnic lunch is the way to go.

ust billows in the air as cattle charge forward, swirling their tails to swat flies with heads down to chomp on the growing greens as they pass. Calves stick by their mamas as they head into the mountains, their heads tucked into the larger animals’ sides.

With the sun blazing overhead, the valleys near Grand Forks get warmer as Allen and Gwen Pauls and their family guide their cattle towards greener pastures.

Two horses lead the way through barely used logging roads, while two remain behind the pack to contain wayward cattle.

As the cattle trudge up a steep gravel path, they take a break for the small calves unaccustomed to the lengthy journey.

“Sometimes it’s a bit crazy because the cows are ready to go so they’ll be trotting along,” explains daughter Becky Tebrinke.

“It’s also important for the horses in the back to remain a few feet behind the cattle to keep an eye out for strays.”

The moment the weather warms up, the Pauls keep an ear open for word from the Ministry of Forests.

“Once they say the ranges are open, we start sorting our cows out,” Gwen adds. “We decide which cows go to which range and how many are allowed to go to on each.”

The earlier ranges are usually opened in May, while the farthest ranges to the north are 35 kilometres away and open later in the summer.

Gwen points out that it takes more time to round up the cattle and move to the north ranges, and depending on the temperature, it can take four to five hours to reach the north ranges.

“We take them to the community pastures and because the calves get sore feet and we leave them there for a day, sometimes two days,” Gwen said. “From there, we pick them up and go for another four-five hours. From there they keep going and don’t stop.”

In a time where ATVs and increased technology has changed the daily life of ranchers, the Pauls continue to drive their cattle using their horses.

Becky notes that the entire family enjoys riding horses and ATVs just aren’t practical Allen adds that aside from the noise, riding horses is fun and enjoyable.

“Who wants to ride an ATV when you can ride a horse? You can’t beat a horse in chasing cattle,” he said. “ATVs are noisy and you have to have a helmet on and use a radio when on an ATV.” Gwen adds that ATVs generally get stuck in the bush and don’t work well on the hilly ranges.

By driving the cattle using horses, rather than shipping them in a truck, the cattle are able to know their way home.

“As long as you drive them, they’ll know where to come back to,” Gwen said. “As it gets colder or snow comes, or it starts freezing, the cows instinctively know it must be time to come home. Generally speaking, by this time they’re all usually up in the north range, they’ll start coming down on their own.”

As the season closes, the family will occasionally check on the cattle to see if they have decided to return before they are gathered at the 28-mile (45-kilometre) mark up the Granby Valley where a community pasture is located. From there, the cattle are guided back home.

Forty years ago, the Pauls moved from Vancouver and purchased PaVan Ranch on North Fork Road outside Grand Forks.

Allen chuckles and points out that when they first moved to the ranch, there were only hay fields and a cabin.

“Dad and mom built the house and everybody has chipped in since,” said Allen.

To add to their regular schedule of caring for their cattle, the Pauls started PV Ranch Adventures four years ago for visitors who wish to experience branding, cattle drives, round-ups and feeding during the year.

Daughter Kerri points out that visitors also enjoy riding horses through their trails and experiencing the peace and quiet.

“We have longer trails that go four or five hours, depending on how long they would like to ride for, and closer to town it’s an hour or two hours,” she said.

Whether in search of Ponce De Leon’s “Fountain of Youth,” The Northwest Passage, or a multitude of other mythical or legendary troves of untold wealth, there’s a reason people lose their marbles at the first mention of gold in them thar hills — the prospect and challenge of unearthing, discovering, searching out and finding a location, item, or dragon conjures up a sense of adventure and creates a defined objective…

There are hundreds of geocaches found throughout the Kootenay-Boundary region, the contents of each trove as diverse as whomever originally plotted its location and devised what ought to go inside its container. For an idea of how many are around, a quick search on geocaching.com shows 187 caches hidden within five miles of Rossland, 147 within five miles of Grand Forks, and 90 within five miles of Nelson.

Relocating a geocache (removing the entire container), placing it in a hazard area, or burying it six feet under does little more than discourage active and continued participation. While half or more of the fun stems from the adventure of getting there via coordinates, bush-whacking, climbing, hiking, and so on along the way, setting eyes on a compromised or tampered with geocache (or finding none at all) is a real drag.

Fortunately, geocache fans self-police, and the very fact that the caches themselves are concealed or hidden makes vandalism an uncommon if not almost completely unknown problem; these are not solid gold sarcophaguses or Faberge eggs, but caches containing bits and bobs better resembling party favours than even the foil-wrapped Easter eggs pursued as youngsters — a prize for your efforts, but a far-cry

Which leads to another note of interest, that of the public interest. Geocaching takes place primarily on public lands and parks — another terrific way of recreating amidst our shared (and consequently protected) resources. From KC Ridge to the Valhallas, Christina Lake and back again, the activity creates a varied experience that can only augment our appreciation of our natural surroundings in this corner of the country, AND, it’s essentially free to take part in once you have attained a GPS device. While these vary greatly in price, smart phones and android phones are a great option, too. Geocache apps are widely available, easy to use, and a treat to familiarize yourself with.

Whether you have a terrible sense of direction, or an eye to adventure, geocaching is a terrific tool to add to your Kootenay-Boundary explorer kit, and a great way to get yourself and your family out in our great outdoors.

A touch of glass Lucinda Dupee delights in making glass beads and sculptures

n opaque rod of purple glass held above a hot flame is slowly wrapped around a metal stick.

Flaring red with heat, the glass is carefully shaped into a circular bead and decorated with melted blobs of glass.

Steady hands carefully roll the hot bead on a flat metal plate, flattening the protruding glass to create a semblance of petals.

Minutes later, Lucinda Dupee reveals a rounded glass bead with charming flowers.

A trained silversmith, Christina Lake resident Lucinda Dupee turned to glass making because of her difficulty with how silver was mined, with the use of cyanide and the methods required to retrieve the silver from the earth.

In the past, Dupee dabbled with creating things from wood, seeds and recycled objects.

But when the opportunity to work with glass came up, she thought it would be a fun experience because she already had a fascination with glass beads. ➤

“It’s the seduction of melting stuff in the fire which I’ve always liked,” she said. “It’s about, ‘What colour would I like to use today?’ and there are gobs of gorgeous colours and textures and how can I refuse that?”

Dupee started taking classes in 2001 and has since broadened to create her own jewellery and mini sculptures.

Living by the lake, she has a fondness for recreating small pieces of nature and fishes.

“I enjoy sitting in front of the torch and playing with the colours, watching the glass move and the colours change,” said Dupee.

“There’s a whole different chemistry between different glasses and different colours and how they react.”

Dupee uses glass from around the world, from Germany, Italy and China, and since each glass has different chemicals, depending on which glass is used there will be a different outcome.

“It’s not just about making the bead anymore, but how to find cool ways you get glass to move around and act differently so you get shiny or metally looks, or opalescence,” she said. “There’s a ton of stuff you have to write down because some of that happens by surprise.”

Once her beads are created, she heads to her studio to make jewellery, picking and choosing various beads to match together.

stuff. I have to tell myself ‘enough’ and I have to make something out of this that will pay me back for all the glass that I bought.”

Dupee also teaches small groups how to create beads, out of the Christina Living Arts Centre.

“It is limited because there’s only a certain amount of torch space,” she explained. “Each person has to have their own torch and everyone also has to wear special glasses for safety.”

Classes usually run for two days, where the bead is made on the first day before it sits in an annealer at 1200 degrees.

The annealer, similar to a kiln, slowly drops to room temperature.

The beads are ready to use the next day when students can then make something with them.

She encourages everyone to try it, since the only thing holding someone back is fear itself.

“People always say I can’t do something like that or I’m not creative enough, but it’s just fear. Anybody can try something,” Dupee concluded. “The other thing is to practice, practice, practice. People will watch me make something and tell me I’m so good at it. I was terrible at it when I first started, but I’ve been doing it for a while. People need to put practice time into it.”

hey called him the Kipling of the Kootenays and the Bard of Lemon Creek.

Though his name is no longer well known, Robert Thompson Anderson was among our region’s most prolific pioneer poets. His paeans paid tribute to life in the Slocan, his Scottish heritage, and after World War I, his comrades-in-arms.

Despite only a Grade 4 education, by his late teens Anderson was composing poems of considerable skill, which probably relieved some of the boredom he felt working in his parents’ store at Lemon Creek, where the family arrived in 1897 from Manitoba.

His work appeared regularly in the Slocan Drill and received rave reviews.

In particular, a poem about the death of Queen Victoria, entitled The Message of Grief, caused a sensation, and was reprinted in many papers from Vancouver to Toronto.

The Kootenaian wrote: “It is doubtful if very many of the thousands of poetic efforts that have flooded the press since the passing away of the great Queen have proven the equal of that by R.T. Anderson, the gifted young bard of Lemon Creek. The youthful poet gives promise of a remarkable career, and the Slocan is proud to be able to place him among the products of the richest district on earth.”

Many of Anderson’s works were specific to Slocan and its environs, including Lowery’s Claim, Slocan is a Braw Toon, Slocan You’re All Right Yet! and The Three Candidates. The latter, about the 1900 race for Slocan MLA between Robert Green, George Kane, and John Keen, ended with the memorable line: “For Green is green/and also Keen/and doubtless so is Kane.”

Anderson also frequently wrote poems in French Canadian and Scottish dialect. ➤

A series of letters to an uncle in Florida now held by the BC Archives reveal Anderson to be fiercely patriotic and also betray the endemic racism of the times. Only in a few places, however, does he mention his poems. “So many people ask me for copies that it would keep me busy writing for them if I complied with their requests,� he wrote. “That is one reason I wanted to get my pieces printed to save me the bother of copying. I have not tried any American houses but it would take a small fortune to have them published in Canada.�

Small fortune or not, in 1909 his first book appeared, The Old Timer & Other Poems, collecting 50 or so works from the Drill with 60 newer ones.

By this time Anderson had moved to Edmonton, where he was among the city’s first firefighters and later a health inspector. Both occupations inspired poems.

Tragedy struck in 1913: while driving a horse-drawn ambulance, he was called to a fire at his own home, which claimed his wife, leaving him the widowed father of a nine-month-old girl.

Also that year, Anderson published his second book, Canadian Born & Other Western Verse, and soon after, enlisted.

He spent the bulk of the war in France, as a member of the Canadian Corps Cavalry Regiment and Canadian Light Horse.

His overseas record was lengthy and distinguished: he was cited three times for bravery, received a military medal, and was promoted to Lance Corporal, although at his request, his rank reverted to private — he wanted to remain on the same footing as his friends.

Throughout the war, Anderson maintained a long-distance romance through poems and letters with Margaret (Greta) Grant. They married a week after his return in 1919 and had two daughters and a son.

War left Anderson with physical and emotional scars.

Gassed twice, he developed psoriasis all over his body, and never shook a persistent cough. He was also haunted by what he saw — experiences chronicled poetically in his final book, Troopers in France, published in 1932. (It sold poorly and is now hard to find.)

Anderson returned a few times to Lemon Creek, where his parents and siblings continued to live — the family farm became a Japanese-Canadian internment camp during World War II. He died in 1960, leaving a literary legacy ranging from the Silvery Slocan rush to the trenches of Europe.

F

ormed in 2005, the Central Kootenay Invasive Plant Committee (CKIPC) aims to spread the word on the damaging effects of invasive plant species. Invasive plant species choke out native plants, impacting the ecological balance formed by both plants and animals. With no natural predators and large number of seeds, invasive plants take over an area with devastating consequences and massive economic losses. Focusing on the geographic area of the Regional District of Central Kootenay and Areas A and B of the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary, CKIPC has a vast area to cover which demands communication between groups and municipalities.

plants for your garden (Grow Me Instead), which is available for free.

Secondly, proper disposal needs to be ensured. Many populations in the area start with improper garden waste disposal. Due to invasive species’ ability to root with even a tiny segment of plant, dumping garden waste in natural areas allows species to spread (Japanese Knotwood being a common species). It is recommended that individuals bag their invasive species waste and take it to the dump for free disposal in the RDCK and RDKB, where it can be disposed of properly.

Has CKIPC been able to save an area?

The Casino Road Knotweed Control Program is an excellent example of groups coming together and controlling an area. Likely due to improper garden waste disposal, a total of 0.58 hectares of knotweed had infested Casino Road. Due to its proximity to riparian areas and size of infestation, the area became a high priority and resulted in the Kootenay Weed Control, Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, Teck Metals (Trail Operations), and Fish and Wildlife Compensation Program all contributing funds to help treat the knotweed. Further to the knotweed, the only known purple loosestrife infestation, along this section of the Columbia River, was also treated.

What can you do if you discover an invasive species?

CKIPC maintains a database of all known invasive species and the extent to which they have invaded. Informing us allows us to track the species and prepare a plan to combat it. Please contact us if you suspect you have spotted a species within your yard, along the highway, or in your community. We will identify and incorporate into our database.

Once the species is identified, we can then discuss disposal but it must be emphasized that proper disposal is required. Some plants, such as Giant Hogweed, can be toxic to humans causing burns and blisters to the skin and, as most invasive species only require a small amount of plant material to re-root, it’s necessary to take caution to reduce spreading the species further.

Is there anything else that an individual can do?

Information and education is the key to preventing spread. When people are aware of the affects, learn what is safe to grown, and know how to properly dispose of invasive species, we can reduce the numbers of invasive species.
