A message from the Quesnel Flying Club This will be Quesnel’s second International Airshow and the first year under the newly formed Quesnel SkyFest Society. Our vision is to provide quality aviation entertainment while showcasing our beautiful city and regional airport and giving opportunity to other local groups to participate. This year’s line-up of performers is sure to please everyone with the return of some favorites from the last show, top level Canadian and American airshow circuit performers, and for those that like it loud and fast, more JETS! Each year across the country many young people are inspired to join the world of aviation either as a pilot or as a career, and nothing brings more joy to the organizers, than the knowledge that they played a part in that. Aviation and airports play an important role in our lives, sometimes, far more than we realize, and it is important for us to give our support. Without this, a community cannot continue to grow. This year’s event will be a two day show with the intent of making it a mini-holiday destination in the years to come. To all of our local family, enjoy the weekend. To everyone from places afar, WELCOME to our beautiful city, to our hospitality, and enjoy the show. Jerry van Halderen President Quesnel SkyFest Society

BOB SINGLETON Airshow Announcer Now in his 5th decade of airshow narrating, Bob Singleton has entertained and informed millions of aviation fans at hundreds of airshows from coast-to-coast in Canada and the United States. Airshow announcing became a secondary career to his job as a professional broadcaster, a vocation that led to ownership in several AM and FM radio stations. After 38 years, Bob retired from the broadcast industry in 1999. Bob’s first airshow announcing job was in 1969 at the Abbotsford International Airshow assisting primary announcer Toby Trowbridge. He did his first solo airshow at Penticton in 1972 and became Abbotsford’s primary announcer in 1977. In 1986, Bob was chosen to narrate the aviation events at EXPO 86. Amongst his many airshow announcing credits are the Washington State Airfare, National Capital Airshow in Ottawa, Hamilton Airshow, Shearwater Nova Scotia Airshow, Saskatchewan Airshow and ten years at the three day Portland Oregon airfare. Bob earned his private flying licence in 1978. In 1996, the RCAF Snowbirds made him an honorary member. The Abbotsford International Airshow saluted his 40th year of airshow announcing in 2008. Always active in the community, Bob served six years as a Police Commissioner in Matsqui (now Abbotsford) and eight years as Vice Chair of the Abbotsford International Airport Authority. He was Executive Vice President of the 1995 Western Canada Summer Games and a Director of the B.C. Association of Broadcasters. He is currently Chair of the Abbotsford Salvation

GARY WARD AEROBATICS Gary developed an interest in airplanes as an early teenager, soloed at age 16 in a Piper J-3 Cub and has been passionate about aviation ever since. After high school and a tour with the USAF as a jet engine mechanic, Gary graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology with a degree in Aerospace Engineering. He worked as a design engineer on the Cessna Citation for Cessna for about a year before “switching hats” to work in a family operated lumber manufacturing business. Gary started flying airshows in 1998 in a Pitts S2-B and then flew airshows in the Giles 202 from 1999 through 2005. In 2006 he became the first pilot to fly airshows in the awesome and exciting new MX2! The MX2 is an all carbon fiber monoplane powered by a 6 cylinder Lycoming engine “pumped up” by Lycon and is truly “state of the art” in all out aerobatic aircraft.

Dan Buchanan
Dan was a New York & Connecticut home builder and flat-track motorcycle racer; then moved to Lake Tahoe, CA where he enjoyed the thrill of flying off mountain tops. He was getting his Private Pilot License when in 1981, he had a spinal injury landing a hang glider in bad weather that he shouldn’t have even been flying in. Losing his ability to walk, he returned to college to pursue a career in mechanical engineering, landing him in Silicon Valley, CA. Despite this new handicap, Dan returned to the thrill of flying within six months, and since then his tenacity and adventurous spirit has allowed him to accrue more than 2,900 hours of flight time in Hang Gliders and Sailplanes. Completing his Private and Commercial Pilot License as a wheelchair user, his motorless recreational flights are typically 3-6 hours long, thermal soaring as high as 18,000 feet over the western deserts and mountains. After his first air show performance at Medford, OR in 1989, his appearances increased each year, and now he shares his thrill of flight with millions of people around the world during his annual 25+ city Airshow tour, driving 45,000+ miles each summer. Performing principally across North America, his international venues have included Australia (8 times), Japan, Thailand, El Salvador, The United Arab Emirates, Canada, and Mexico. Dan is also a Federally (BATF) and State licensed pyrotechnician trained by Hollywood effects pros. He installs, wires and sequences all of the special effects on the fabric wing himself. Can you blame him? He is also a Commercial Glider pilot, enjoying sailplane aerobatics and giving glider rides to friends at Minden, Nevada when not on the Airshow tour. Dan owes Sailplaning to “Sky Sailing” in Warner Springs, CA, whose school has one of the few “hand control” equipped sailplanes in the US. http://www.skysailing.com Some of his other adventurous passions include highspeed long distance desert riding and racing on ATV’s, flat-water river kayaking and SCUBA diving on wrecks and in caves. Dan’s Gliders.... Dan’s unpowered hang glider (which he uses in the daytime act) and the motorized hang glider (which he uses for the night time act), are both designed by NorthWing in Wenatchee WA. NorthWing.com Both are registered with the FAA as experimental aircraft with N numbers because of the commercial entertainment work he does. Hang gliding has come a long way since the perilous 70’s. Dan’s factory built aircraft are rigorously engineered, stress tested and instruction is mandatory. He also holds a Commercial Glider Pilot License, enjoying sailplane aerobatics and giving glider rides at Minden, Nevada when not on the Airshow tour.

BLENDER AIRSHOWS Ron Andrew is 53 years old, married (Janice) with three grown boys. He was born and raised in Central Alberta. At the age of 10 years he started playing in a family band. This kept his weekends busy for the next 26 years. During those years and the years of raising a family, he always dreamed of flying and specifically doing aerobatics. It was not until the children were older that he was able to begin. In 2005 he bought an ultralight and earned his ultralight licence. And so it began.... Today Ron flies a Pitts Special and has an airshow routine that is noisy and exciting with lots of smoke. His years of performing music in front of crowds, gives him a special charm and confidence. Always warm and enthusiastic, he is sure to be a crowd pleaser for your airshow, media rides, on location events and autograph or interview situations.
THE AIRPLANE Factory certified Pitts S2B affectionately called the BLENDER. This aircraft came to Canada brand new in 1985. At that time it was black and gold and was owned and piloted by Al Hauff as part of the Ray Ban Gold Aerobatic team. When they disbanded Bill Carter bought the plane and had it painted red. Bill flew air shows for several years before selling the aircraft to Jim Hyrmack. Jim, being a retired military pilot, also performed at air shows but soon found a Harvard that he wanted so the Pitts was sold to Eric Hansen (Eric is presently ½ of Team Rocket with Ken Fowler being the other ½). Ron purchased this Pitts from Eric and was delighted to get a machine with such an incredible history. It has been all over North America and as far away as New Orleans. Throughout its life the maintenance has been impeccable and it shows. Eric made some improvements by adding a three blade MT composite propeller and custom exhaust thus increasing performance considerably over a stock Pitts S2B. N

Paul Dumoret
Paul got his Private Pilot License in May of 1972 in Chilliwack BC. He flew the club’s 150’s and 172 but soon graduated to the 1956 Beech Bonanza when he had about 36 hours. He used to rent aircraft in Alberta where he flew on business and purchased his first airplane in 1978 – a Piper J3 Cub, which he kept at the ranch in Clinton.
John Mrazek Veteran airshow pilot and performer John Mrazek along with his Harvard Mark IV, “Pussycat II,” will dazzle audiences, spectators, or anyone watching with a spectacular aerial ballet. With lots of noise, smoke, and skill, John’s aerobatic performance will bring the entire airshow crowd to a standstill. John is a well known aerobatic airshow performer with over twenty five years experience flying the airshow circuit. When John is not flying airshows, he is instructing in the art of aerobatics, formation flying, and float flying. John also acts as an ICAS approved Airshow Certificate Evaluator. As incredible as his airborne performance is, John realizes that his effort on the ground is just as critical to the success of the show. Before and after each performance, you can find John signing autographs, taking pictures, and conversing with the fans to give even the biggest of events a personal touch that leaves the fans with an experience unmatched by any other professional sporting or entertainment event.
Subsequent airplanes were a Beech Bonanza for 8 years and a Turbo Twin Comanche for another 14 years. Paul has his night endorsement, instrument rating, multi-engine rating and float endorsement. He has flown to the Arctic Ocean and through the Yukon and Northwest Territories on floats, has been all through the central and eastern parts of Canada, in all but 4 US states and through the Caribbean as far south as Trinidad. He has accumulated about 4500 hours and has been flying his Nanchang warbird for over 10 years and secured his FAST formation rating and performs standard military style aerobatics.

Skip Stewart
The Pilot Skip Stewart is one of the most entertaining Airshow pilots in the world today. He has over eight thousand hours of flying experience, is an Airline Transport Pilot, Certified Flight Instructor, has owned and operated an aerobatic flight school, earned Gold Medals in regional aerobatic competitions, served as a Chief Pilot for a Fortune 100 company and has spent more than eleven years entertaining airshow fans around the World. Skip practices tirelessly in the custom airplane he built himself to insure the highest level of safe entertainment. His flying has been featured in magazines that include Smithsonian Air & Space, AOPA, Sports Illustrated, Plane & Pilot, World Airshow News, as well as many international publications. He is also the first pilot to fly an airplane under a jumping motorcycle at an airshow. Skip also performs in multi-ship acts, and has performed with well known pilots including Gene Soucy, Jim LeRoy, Patty Wagstaff, John Mohr, Kent Pietsch, and many others. The Airplane Skip’s aircraft is named Prometheus, which means “Forethought.” Prometheus was a rebel Titan who displeased Zeus by taking from him and giving to the people of earth the power of fire. The name matches the paint design with its hot-rod-style flame job, and matches his act with its snarling, flashy maneuvers and Skip’s forethought in his crowd-pleasing routine. Prometheus is partly Pitts and Partly Skip – and Christina Stewart. Starting life as a Pitts S-2S, Skip modified Prometheus to become the airshow machine he envisioned. This flying machine looks like a good old American hot rod. The horse power was increased to (400), the big three bladed prop reminds you of oversized racing slicks, the landing gear makes it look fast sitting on the ground, and the paint job yells “Street Rod.”… With a climb rate of 4000FPM, max level speed of nearly 200 MPH, stall speed of 58 MPH, empty weight of (1146) lbs. and range of 405 miles – this is an all muscle bi-plane. Ken grew up in British Columbia and started his aviation career by first earning his glider license in 1977. In 1978 he joined the Canadian Military as an airframe technician and worked on T-33’s, CF-101 Voodoos, and CF-18’s before becoming a flight engineer in 1988. Ken has built 5(five) of his own aircraft, and is now building one of his own designs. To date he has over 5000 hours of flying experience as a commercial pilot and flight engineer. Ken retired from the military on May 15/98 with 20 years of service, and is now the Airport Manager at Rocky Mountain House, Alberta. During his last five years with the military he toured the air show circuit with the Skyhawk Parachute Team as one of the crew members of the Buffalo aircraft. Ken has flown air shows from coast to coast, and can be seen throughout the U.S. and Canada.
Ken flys a Harmon Rocket II, which he built and maintains. This aircraft is a highly modified RV-4. Power is from a Lycoming IO-540, custom built by Progressive Air of Kamloops, British Columbia and produces 300 H.P. at 2800 RPM. The aircraft’s empty weight is only 1146 lbs, which gives it excellent high-speed aerobatic performance and awesome vertical performance. Although not an unlimited aerobatic aircraft such as the Extra 300 or Pitts, this Harmon Rocket will outperform all such aircraft going vertical.

Eric comes from a flying family, having been introduced to aviation at an early age by his father, a commercial helicopter pilot. Eric remembers flying, at the controls, long before he was tall enough to reach the rudder pedals (he had a little help in the turns from his father). A pilot for 20+ years, Eric has over 3200 hours in a variety of aircraft, over 35 different types at last count. When he’s not flying, Eric resides in Cold Lake Alberta where he is a full time dentist as well as a CFI and aerobatic flight instructor. Eric flys the F1 Rocket which is a sleeker, modified version of the Harmon Rocket II The F1 Rocket is a high-performance, kit-built airplane, capable of climbing at 3,500 fpm.
