Issues of cultural trespassing explored From Page 3 to the concept of hereditary rights. Here, issues surrounding cultural ‘trespassing’ will be explored. Stevenson states: “Although these works are often shown in museum or commercial gallery contexts, the pieces have merit as contemporary art. They are created with great skill from years of training through an apprenticeship
and many years of dedication are required to learn the art. The artist must also follow protocol in that they are to use images that they have been given the right to use either through their inherent family rights or through ceremony where one is given the right. “The ongoing discourse around ownership of imagery is important to all of us as artists and

viewers but also in the preservation of cultural knowledge. The works in this exhibit include contemporary work created from the stories to which these artists have hereditary right to use. “We chose to honour the magnitude of this significant event for our community by including traditional celebrations with dancing and song at the K’omoks Big House. Each work is
impressive on its own but experiencing how these works are used in presentation and ceremony changes the relationship that the viewer has with each piece and its maker.” Geary Cranmer was born in and currently lives in Comox. Cranmer paints in acrylics on canvas and carves in cedar, alder and limestone. He began carving 30 years ago working with Calvin Hunt at the

Fishing 2X14 Corner with Don Daniels email: dond@campbellrivermirror.com In my weekly fishing report I contact salmon fishing guides for current reports but conditions can change at any given moment. I travel to many lakes each week gathering information and fish particular spots to get a feel of what the conditions are like. As of July 18th, salmon fishing has been very good between Campbell River and Courtenay. Fishing guide Russ Lim has been guiding in Campbell River for over 20 years. He started guiding in high school and is still at Painters Lodge. Laurie Campbell from Victoria was on a fishing trip with his wife, Sherry. The trip started at Nootka Sound on the west coast and the couple picked up a few fish over 30 pounds, Russ Lim fishing 80 to 90 feet of water. In 1997 Laurie Campbell caught a 8 pound 15 ounce trout trolling a Rapala plug at Roberts Lake. The angler has been fishing here for over 45 years. Laurie likes to fish in the afternoon between 1 and 3 p.m. Roberts Lake is known for having big trout but the wind can hamper an outing at any given time. The pinks can now be found in small numbers and the hotspot has been in Sayward. Anglers are throwing out pink Booger lures. The Campbell River will be full of anglers using spinning gear and flies. Any Laurie & Sherry Campbell combination of pink, green and blue will work at this time of year. The water lever on the Campbell is high but should go down later this week. Fishermen from the U.K are fishing the Quinsam and are having a ball on catch and release Cutties. The Tyee Club in Campbell River is open for the season and the battle for the big one will start heating up over the next couple of weeks.

Dick as well as Joe Peters. Johnson works only in wood and specializes in masks, rattles, and bowls. His work has been purchased by museums and collectors around the world. Recently his Bear Mask was included in a National Geographic article. Troy Roberts is descended from chiefs
of the Weiwakum First Nation. He has been immersed in his native cultural heritage since he was a small boy, learning the dances and myths of his people under the disciplined guidance of the late Elizabeth Kwaksistala. Roberts carries on this tradition with his sons, Tyrone and Nathan. He was

Local athletes could compete at next Winter Olympics More than 100 people gathered at the Vancouver Island Mountain Centre recently to groove the night away while helping to raise funds for local mountain sports athletes. The event, hosted by the Vancouver Island Mountain Sports Society (VIMSS) in their new building, generated $8,000 thanks to event tickets, silent auction and raffle sales. There was also a tightly contested laser biathlon shooting contest where new enthusiasts could try their hand at the sport. Guests were treated to a tasty barbeque and appies while Ucluelet’s own Left at the Junction laid down some folk and a little bit of funk. The bulk of the funds raised will go towards athlete bursaries for the upcoming year to help pay for local athlete travel and training expenses. Don Sharpe, vicechair of VIMSS says,
The Vancouver Island Mountain Centre on Mount Washington includes a fitness centre, large meeting room and a self-catering kitchen. “Our Island alpine community has a real opportunity to have a number of athletes competing at the Olympics in 2014 in Sochi, Russia. “The calibre of our young people has risen substantially in the last five years. We are looking forward to helping our emerging athletes meet their dreams.” The Vancouver Island Mountain Sports Society has raised approximately $85,000 for local mountain sports athletes since its inception in 2003. VIMSS thanks all of the individuals,
companies and organizations for their donations that helped make the Après Ski Fundraiser a success. A special thank you to WestJet for donating two tickets and to Hot Chocolates in Courtenay for the chocolate bar donation complete with a unique artwork wrapper by well-known Black Creek artist Brian Scott. “We certainly could not have done this event without the generous donations of food, Pepsi products, prizes and music,” says Karen Bonell, event coordinator for VIMSS.
“The entire VIMSS board of directors volunteered many hours to help organize this fundraiser.” The Vancouver Island Mountain Centre is on Mount Washington at the end of Nordic Road across from Raven Lodge and Strathcona Park’s Paradise Meadows. The nonprofit V.I. Mountain Centre provides group accommodation for up to 40 people, full kitchen and dining facilities plus meeting rooms and a fitness centre. Surf to
