NAUTICAL DAYS

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 1, 2012 • COMOX VALLEY RECORD

www.comoxvalleyrecord.com

Message from the mayor The 2012 Nautical Days and the Filberg Festival celebrations will once again provide a fun-filled, familyoriented weekend for residents and tourists alike to enjoy during this B.C. Day Holiday weekend in beautiful Comox By The Sea. It is worth noting that this year’s Filberg Festival is celebrating its 30th anniversary — net funds from this annual event go to ongoing maintenance of beautiful Filberg Park and Heritage Lodge. We like to think that our Town truly sparkles at this time of the year and with the large influx of people coming to our community, we like to say “Welcome,” “Enjoy,” and we look forward to your return. It is always great fun to see all the families, seniors,

and visitors come out to the Nautical Days Parade on Monday morning; if you happen to see the Mayor and some of the Councillors on their bikes coming down Comox Avenue during the Parade give them a shout-out and a wave. On behalf of Council and our Town staff, I offer a very heartfelt “thank-you” to all the organizers and volunteers for the time and effort they so generally donate to make these two signature events a huge success. Without you these festivities would not be possible. So, have fun and stay safe! Yours truly,

Paul Ives, Mayor

Fun for kids and adults Record Staff Pirates, sinking ships, and a contest to see who can catch the biggest fish are just a few bits of fun at the 54th annual Nautical Days Festival. The festival will span the B.C. Day long weekend (Aug. 4 to 6) and will feature a slew of time-honoured acts and events sure to please crowds of kids and adults. Saturday morning will begin with a Strathcona Sunrise Rotary pancake breakfast, featuring live entertainment by Rob Petrie. Festival-goers can afterwards try their luck competing in one of several categories at the 26th annual Bullhead Derby. The annual Kids’ Festival begins at 10 a.m. and ends at 4 p.m. with a pet parade; amongst other activities,

youngsters can build crafts, hop on the Bounce Mania, have their faces painted, or brave numerous carnival rides. Adults are also entitled to their fun at a centrallylocated, bistro-style garden termed Tavern on the Green, open each day. A jazz ensemble will provide the afternoon’s entertainment. Once the Kids’ Festival winds down, competition will heat up as two-man teams prepare for a canoejousting competition presented by the Flying Canoe West Coast Pub — the last man standing wins! Folks of all ages are then invited to a live performance at Captain Cracker’s Family Dance, the final event of the night. Those who worked up an appetite partaking in the previous day’s festivities will be pleased to learn

Strathcona Sunrise Rotary provides another pancake breakfast Sunday morning. Afterwards, festival-goers can wander down to Marina Park’s Rotary Boardwalk to “hear the drums, feel the spirit” and watch the action unfold as teams from across the Island and Lower Mainland compete in the 10th annual Victor Simonson Dragon Boat Races. The Comox Valley Ministerial will simultaneously lead an interdenominational church service to which attendees should bring their own lawn chairs. At 12:30 p.m., Elvis tribute artist Steve Elliot will bring the “memories and magic of the King. Sunday’s ‘Gospel of Elvis’ will be the first of three stellar performances. Once prizes have been awarded to dragon-boating winners, Time Well Wasted

THE NAUTICAL DAYS PARADE is a fun-filled event for kids and adults alike. The parade happens at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 6 in downtown Comox. PHOTO BY JUSTIN HUGHES will entertain crowds during the second installment of Captain Cracker’s Family Dance. Kinsmen will sponsor Monday morning’s pancake breakfast, fuelling spectators and competitors participating in Central Builders Home Hardware’s 25th annual Build, Bail, and Sail. Contestants will construct a flotilla of water craft onsite using only hand tools; the race, which begins at 1 p.m., is often won by simply stay-

ing afloat. Athletes preferring to stay dry can instead compete in B.C.’s longestrunning foot race; registration is $10 for the four-mile race. Finneron Hyundai and Courtenay Auto Supply will put on a car show running 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Half an hour after the car show commences, the Nautical Days annual parade will leave Rodello Street, turning at Stewart Avenue before ending up at Marina Park. Noon will see a perfor-

mance from the Forbidden Men’s Choir, an address from Mayor Paul Ives, and a traditional welcome by the K’ómoks First Nation and K’umugwe Dancers, as opening ceremonies commence. At 10:15 p.m., the festivities will culminate in Vancouver Island’s largest fireworks display. Sponsored by Quality Foods, the spectacular choreographed event will last 30 minutes before spectators are bid a final goodnight.

Ahoy mates, it’s time for BBS Record Staff Sinking, swimming or staying afloat will likely be a few of the outcomes of the 25th annual Build Bail & Sail this B.C. Day. The Comox Harbour has been the site of floundering contestants every B.C. Day since the 1980’s, and this year is sure to be another hit with participants and spectators alike. Sixteen two-pirate teams create their ‘Titanics’ on a budget of $85.85, with material donated by Central Builders. On race day they have to build their vessel using only hand tools under the critical eye of many curious onlookers. Spectators have included curious locals as well as tourists from all over the world. Contestants are from

manoeuvres, but even the most seasoned sailors can take a tumble from their boats. After four heats with four boats in each, there’s a

four-person team exhibition race, which will be between the Village of Cumberland the Town of Comox, the City of Courtenay and 19 Wing Comox.

BIG crowds, BIG fish Annual Nautical Days children’s Bullhead Derby largest in Pacific Northwest The ever-popular Nautical Days children’s Bullhead Derby is sure to bring in lots of kids and some big bullheads. The Bullhead Derby is the largest catch-and-release event of its kind in the Pacific Northwest. Last year’s derby drew nearly 500 young and young-at-heart participants angling for top honours in categories ranging from largest fish to strangest catch. Participants supply their fishing pole, barbless hooks and bait, while Nautical Days provides the jovial spirit of friendly competition. The 26th annual event begins Saturday, August 4 at 8:30 a.m. at the government wharf. The adventure for the bullhead derby, though, isn’t just the thrill of the chase or the fun of

learning something new. It’s seeing what little ones might bring out of the water in their pursuit of the oddest fish. There are always interesting finds including a variety of sea creatures, such as colourful starfish and crabs, and interesting ‘treasures’ dropped by the people above. There have been tires, boots and other surprising finds as part of the morning’s catch. While these sea creatures are returned to the water, and junk is properly disposed of— bullhead, tom cod, greenling, flatfish, rockfish or perch are brought to the official sponsor’s station in a provided plastic bag filled with seawater so they can be measured, recorded and then released. Following the derby, a special Main Stage presentation will

be held at noon to celebrate the annual event. First place trophies and runner-up awards will be presented and the winner of the “Largest Bullhead” caught will be proclaimed. Entrants need to be in attendance to win one of the draw prizes donated by Canadian Tire and Gone Fishin’. Anyone who enters the derby is automatically entered in the draw. Registration for the bullhead derby takes place between 8 and 9 a.m. at the check-in booth at Marina Park. Participants can speed up the line by filling out the form on Page 9. Lifejackets, sunscreen and a hat are strongly advised for this event. All fishing rods, barbless hooks and bait must be provided by the entrants.

Take a twist on the medieval sport of jousting at the Nautical Days Festival Record Staff Why ride a horse to joust, when you can ride in a canoe instead? The Nautical Days canoe jousting competition has proven to be a real crowd pleaser and this year will be no exception. Teams of two people per canoe will compete for fabulous prizes in a marine version of the mediaeval sport of jousting. One team mate mans the canoe, (as if it were a horse), while the other stands in the bow holding a long jousting pole, (with a soft tip to avoid injury of course), ready to attack the other team.

Although it’s a fun event to watch, it’s even better to participate. This wet and wild event will happen at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 4. Registration is free and open the day of the event at the Comox Marina Boat Launch. Canoes with lifejackets are supplied courtesy of Horne Lake Campground and Outdoor Centre. The Flying Canoe West Coast Pub is the prize sponsor of the event. Participants are encouraged to dress up as they prepare for ‘battle’ and a special prize will be awarded for best costume. NAUTICAL DAYS

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 1, 2012 • COMOX VALLEY RECORD

www.comoxvalleyrecord.com

It’s all about the kids The Nautical Days Kids Festival is sure to be a great time for kids big and small. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. it’s all about the kids with children’s entertainers, games, crafts, rides and face art, plus much more. Nautical Days organizer Bob McQuillan notes the pet parade is a popular part of the day; kids are encouraged to bring their pets and parade them around with the Nautical Days’ mascot Captain Cracker leading the way.

Over the years, he’s seen all sorts of interesting pets in the parade. “We’ve had snakes and iguanas and lizards and dogs and cats and parrots and whatever, you know, a lamb once,” he said, adding prizes are given out at the end for categories like cutest and ugliest pet, but organizers ensure all kids receive a prize. Also, “Lots of Laughs Productions comes in, and we have balloon art, clowns, that kind of thing, so it’s all kid-based,” he said.
