Concert in the Park honours Vanderhoof with a lyrical performance Christina Millington Omineca Express The sound of music filled Ferland Park on July 28 as many talented performances graced the stage.

The events highlight was the debut of the Vanderhoof theme song headed by Canadian songwriter, Lowry Olafson.

Mayor Gerry Thiessen, Deputy Administrator for the District of Vanderhoof Tom Clement as well as many talented songstresses participated in singing the Arts and Hearts Alive theme song for the Nechako Community Arts Council and the The Heart of It All for the District of Vanderhoof.

James and Friends, a “sit around the table, rock out in the garage” type band graced the stage with their musical talents.

Lowry Olafson took to the stage late afternoon showcasing a few of his original songs as a tribute to family, friends and his experiences throughout Canada.

RCMP gets a grip on things Christina Millington Omineca Express Sgt. Jason Keays had his detachment out at the NVSS fields on July 25 for a first hand introduction into the Police Dog section (PDS) on the RCMP enforcement side of things.

The Prince George PDS unit came out to Vanderhoof with their trained German shepherds’ demonstrating the various exercises and drills the dogs must go through to be successful in the field when apprehending a suspect.

The PDS unit trains every week and Sgt. Keays thought to invite the specialized unit to Vanderhoof to offer a “refresher” for the detachment.

“It was a training day for the men,” said Keays.

“It was nice to have them here.”

All dogs are trained for tracking and searching for suspects, evidence, drugs and explosives.

Generally an officer has raised his or her dog since about six weeks old.

When the dog reaches the age of about two, the duo heads to 17 weeks of training at the RCMP’s Police Dog Service Training Centre in Alberta.

BRIEFLY RCMP reports Christina Millington Omineca Express Cpl. Justin Thiessen reported on July 25 around 7:30 p.m. a vehicle crashed into the ditch on Northside Road.

The driver was treated for minor injuries; alcohol wasn’t a result of the crash.

Cpl. Thiessen stresses that mechanical issues played a factor with the driver not being able to control the vehicle.

Winners of the Omineca Golf Men’s Open

St. John hospital’s Oncology unit benefits from annual fundraiser

Submitted On July 23, a record number of ladies took to the links in Vanderhoof to raise money for the local Oncology Unit at St. John hospital. 59 golfers participated in a fun four-ball scramble format and even the occasional thunderstorm did little to damper their enthusiasm.

The ladies were also required to answer trivia questions to test their knowledge of cancer awareness and healthy lifestyle choices.

The Omineca Medical Clinic appropriately sponsored this week of golf in Vanderhoof and the ladies’ night organizers were delighted by the turnout for this annual fundraiser.

“We have never seen so many ladies out at once,” said Ann Martens, one of the main organizers of the event.

“The Vanderhoof Golf Association would like to thank the many golfers for coming out and for the generous donations of silent auction items, raffle table baskets and door prizes.

Rough calculations show that they raised approximately $2255.00 for the local Oncology Unit.

It is awesome to see the enthusiasm for the fundraiser of this kind, especially knowing that all the money raised stays in our community.”

PG city fleet taking a step in the right direction The city fleet is taking it’s first rumble into a new era.

Thanks to a partnership between the City of Prince Geroge, the Regional District of Fraser Fort George, Northern Health and the University of Northern B.C. The vehicle, a Nissan Leaf, is 100 per cent electric and will be shared, three months at a time, by each partner.

Scott Bone with the city said the $44,000 car, along with four charging stations, was purchased through the Community Works fund, administered by the Union of BC Municipalities.

The four charging stations are located at the city hall parking lot, the city yard, the regional district office and UNBC. The vehicle’s range is 160 km in optimal summer weather, and in winter it can travel about 120 km before requiring recharging. There are no emissions from the vehicle, no motor oil is used to operate it and it generally requires 60 per cent less in maintenance costs than a gas-run vehicle.

Mayor Shari Green, who drove the Leaf into the parking lot during a press conference unveiling the vehicle Friday, said during the MyPG consultation

process, one of the top priorities of residents was to create a green city with green practices.

The electric car is a step in the right direction, and one that will help promote the understanding of the operation and durability, particularly during winter conditions, of such vehicles.

Complimentary moves by the city include ensuring the best and quickest routes are being chosen and that vehicles aren’t being idled when they shouldn’t be.

“We try our best to be the greenest and most responsible university in Canada if not the world,”

said Geore Iwama, UNBC president.

He pointed out that in many European countries, such vehicles as well as recharging stations are prolific, and that the same kind of leadership can be shown locally.

“I can’t wait until Northern Health gets its time come March,” Jane Lindstrom, Northern Health vice president of human resources and corporate services said.

“We are pleased to be a partner in this initiative and to have the opportunity to incorporate an electric vehicle into our fleet operation” said Art Kaehn, Chair of the Regional District of FraserFort George. “The Regional District’s Corporate Climate Change Action Plan includes a vehicle right-sizing strategy so that we can minimize greenhouse gas emissions and maximize energy conservation. This partnership will allow us an opportunity to see how electric vehicles may fit into our future fleet profile.”

“We are looking at the future,” said MLA Shirley Bond. “We’ll always have to depend on transportation in B.C.,” she said, adding that using an electric vehicle means reducing the carbon footprint.

Physician shortage sees a light at the end of the tunnel Ruth Lloyd Caledonia Courier The physician shortage in Fort St. James is seeing some light at the end of the tunnel.

Three physicians have signed on to come and work in Fort St. James, according to a Northern Health announcement last week.

According to Northern Health, as of October, one more physician will be working part time in Fort St. James and two more are scheduled to start full time in January of 2013.

“I’m relieved to know that help is on the way and very thankful that the efforts of Northern Health, the efforts of the community and in particular the efforts of Dr. Paul Stent and Kathy Marchal, who through all of the recruiting process also had to carry on with the operation of the clinic in a very stressful situation,” said Mayor Rob

MacDougall.

“It was a great relief for our community as a whole … being able to fill that void,” said Renada Walstrom, a nurse at Nak’azdli Health.

“October still feels like a long way away.”

She said it is hard to continue to have to refer clients to Vanderhoof and Prince George, when they so badly need care.

“You constantly hear the desperation in the community and the fear,” said Walstrom.

She said she is very grateful for the hard work of Dr. Paul Stent in staying on when he had hoped to scale back this year towards retirement, but instead had to shoulder the load of running the medical clinic alone.

“I feel really bad for what he’s had to endure for the past year or so,” said Walstrom.

For their part, the Nak’azdli Health Centre has had higher drop-ins and a larger workload

and has been bringing in a nurse practitioner twice a month to help.

“I think everybody’s just taken on a bit more of a caseload in dealing with the shortage,” she said. “It’s just that general relief in knowing that that follow-through can be done (with the new doctors).”

“I think that the people that have been impacted the most are the seniors because they don’t have the ability to travel like the younger crowd,” said MacDougall.

This great news came as a result of a campaign to recruit doctors, and Northern Health credits community involvement and recruiter collaboration with much of the final success.

The three physicians who are coming happened to visit during the fishing derby and Canada Day celebrations, and the more recent visiting physicians came and participated in Salmon Day tasting

and events at the National Historic SIte. “So they get to see the community activities in action and they get to participate in the community activities, so they really get a sense of the community and who the people are in the community,” said Hughes.

ing on part time in October has been living in Whistler and runs a business which places physicians into rural and remote First Nations communities, in particular in the north, so he is familiar with outpost and remote work with both First Nations and non First Nations.

As Fort St. James is still slated for five fulltime physician positions, Northern Health will be continuing to recruit more physicians to fill one and a half more positions for the community.

Lakes District Hospital site preparation underway Contributed Northern Health released a tender for site preparation for the new Lakes District Hospital and Health Centre.

As the site preparation is not included in the design-build procurement package, it is running as a separate tender competition, with work expected to start in August 2012 and finish in late 2012.

“Site preparation is an important first step in the construction of a new hospital in Burns Lake,” said Nechako Lakes MLA

John Rustad.

“The new hospital has been my number one health capital priority for some time, and once completed, with benefit families and health professionals alike for years to come.”

Site preparation will include removal of existing building services, installing new water and sanitary sewer services for the new facility, relocation and removal of portions of the perimeter fencing and abatement and movement of the existing nurse’s residence, including disposal of the existing nurse’s residence

concrete foundations.

As the site preparation is in progress, the procurement process for the design-build contract for the Lakes District Hospital replacement project continues.

The preferred proponent for the design-build contract is expected to be announced in March 2013, and construction to be completed by the summer of 2015.

The project was announced by government on April 12, 2012, and is estimated price tag of approximately $55 million.

COMMUNITY Mount Milligan Mine marches on Express

Caledonia Courier The Mount Milligan Project is still on target, despite problems for Thompson Creek.

According to Jocelyn Fraser, director of public affairs in Canada for the mine, Mount Milligan is still aiming to open as planned.

“We’re on schedule, so that means commissioning in third quarter of 2013,” said Fraser.

She spoke of the advancements the site is making within a short period between her visits, and mentioned flotation cells being placed in the plant and steel structures being in place for some of the facilities and the framing is now going in for the office administration building and plant laboratory as well.

“Even in a week you can see things really moving along,” she said.

Changes to the environmental approval certificate are still being reviewed, but she said they are hopeful they might get a response by the end of August or early fall.

“We’ve been working with the Environmental Assessment Office … and we’re just working through the procedural parts,” she said.

Positions which have been vacated in Fort St. James may remain

vacant for the time being, as Christy Smith, in charge of community relations for Fort St. James, has since left to work for the Prosperity Project out of Williams Lake.

“When Christy started with us, she was the only person … since then now we’ve got the fully staffed office and we’ve got quite a few people based in the community, so every new employee who comes on community relations becomes a bit of their job as they get out and get established in the community,” said Fraser. “So we’re just going to take a close look at what our needs are given that we’re at a different stage in the project and we do have quite few people living in the community.”

The local office is supposed to stay open, but has been closed on and off temporarily as Brenda Hewett who normally works from the front desk at the local office, has been working on site.

A new hire is expected to start soon to take over at the local office, staffing the front desk once again.

The office is used by a number of different people at different times, some of whom work on site at different times as well.

Fraser said there are now 71 people working at the site for Thompson Creek or contractors on site who declare Fort St. James as

their base.

Mount Milligan has also opened an office in Mackenzie, and a report on HQPrinceGeorge. com gave an estimate of 10 people from Mackenzie working at the mine.

There are approximately 900 personnel working for the mine, directly or for contractors.

Problems with Thompson Creek mines in Idaho and their Endako mine near Fraser Lake, while impacting company share prices, Fraser said should not impact Mount Milligan at this point.

“It doesn’t have an impact really for Mount Milligan,” she said.

“Obviously we want to run a project that’s cost-conscious … but we’re continuing to hire.”

She said there are about 250 operational positions still to fill, but about 100 personnel for the operational phase have already been hired.

“The HR team is working really aggressively to try and recruit those people,” said Fraser.

The permanent operations work force is expected to number about 350.

The company was also announcing a milestone in their ongoing work on site.

They just passed two million hours without a lost time incident.

Peppermint freshness and more!

One of my favorite things about using essential oils is their vast array of uses.

Take peppermint for example! It is useful for indigestion & to remove gas, a tonic for people with a low appetite, helpful in IBS, motion sickness and upset stomach, some even find relief of heartburn. In dental care it’s antiseptic properties help to clean, freshen breath, help with toothache and fend off germs, it also helps your immune system out. It is has used for respiratory problems and helps with nasal congestion, asthma, bronchitis, cough and colds (great in a chest rub combination). Useful for nausea, tension headaches and topically to help with pain. Its’ ability to ‘pick you up’ helps when you are experiencing low energy or mental fuzziness (great before exams or speeches). Peppermint oil can also improve blood circulation and can even help remove dandruff and lice without any toxic chemicals.

In the summer heat try mixing a drop or two of oil in some water, wring out a handkerchief and tie it around your neck/head, or lay on chest for an immediate cooling effect (on the plus side it also nourishes and helps with oily skin)! A great oil for any time of the year.

If you like your peppermint tea, or having it on hand it’s good to remember that dried herbs tend to lose their potency by 6 months of shelf life, so if you only drink that tea every once in a while you may get that uplifting smell, but lose out on the therapeutic properties (I use a drop of the essential oil to 4 cups hot water, potency makes it last a long while and each drop last). For edible herbs Therapeutic grade essential oils are a great substitute as they may keep their medicinal values and therapeutic properties for years, which is great when fresh isn’t available during those winter months (that holds true for using them in cooking as well. Adding a few drops to a finished meal imparts a great taste. It is important to remember that should you chose to use oils internally you make sure they are for internal consumption.

Therapeutic grade essential oils are also food grade, meaning they are ingestible if permitted, whereas some oils that have been mixed into carrier oils and are stored in impure carriers can make you unwell or have little therapeutic value aside from smelling nice.

Heading back into history (twice) on my holidays I was on holidays last week, and I took a step back into my own recent past and a big step back into the history of B.C. On Monday, I headed west with my friend Al to Vanderhoof. That was where I worked before I came to the Free Press, and I wanted to drop in and say “Hi” to the people who were still at the paper there.

Al had memories of summers some time ago spent in the Vanderhoof area, and had been back a few times since, but not recently. He wanted to get a look at how the place had changed.

It had, and the first change was one I knew about. I saw a train rumbling west through the heart of the community, and knew that meant traffic on the main street would be blocked.

So I swung onto Recreation Avenue, where I knew there was now an overpass which would allow us to bypass the lineup of traffic at the rail crossing. Of course, part of my triumph in thinking of this solution was muted by the last cars of the train going under the overpass as we were crossing over, which meant our wait at the crossing would have been minimal.

We took a tour of Vanderhoof. Al remembered when the bridge across the Nechako was wooden, not the concrete it is now. We stopped for a bite to eat, then dropped in at the Omineca Express to visit for a bit.

The ladies there were nice enough to comment on my weight loss, since they hadn’t seen me since I started my diabetes-driven diet.

Then it was back into the car and back to Prince George.

Thursday, I was driving Mom’s car with her as my passenger on a trip to Barkerville. It had probably been a good 30 years since I last visited the gold-rush town, while Mom had last been there in the mid-90s.

A lot had changed, probably actually more for Mom than for me, since her memories of what it had looked like were fresher than mine.

It was hot and there were a lot of people roaming the streets and peering into the various buildings. But it was fun.

It’s a trip we might make again sometime, but with a bit better planning. See, we went on Thursday, which turned out to be the one day of the week that the Theatre Royal wasn’t putting on its revue.

Lost in translation The craft of a simple conversation Christina Millington Omineca Express As I sit here at the local Starbucks, an hour from home, I can’t help but become enveloped in the ever so exciting game of “people watching.”

There is a middle aged man sitting across from me, he seems so delicate in the way that he eats his muffin, starring off into what would seem to be an abyss of endless thought.

He has my full attention, I have yet to have his, as he seems cautiously aware of his surroundings as his eyes wander and stay locked on those whom introduce themselves to his environment.

He wanders about outside looking for a friendly place to enjoy his coffee.

Talking amongst those sitting out there as though he needs their approval to join them on the piece of concrete that accommodates for few seating.

He slowly brings his coffee to his lips, sipping ever so carefully in hopes to savoir the rich blend that envelopes his taste buds, which he gives recognition to with a slight shrug as though relieved.

I love having the chance to look into a world other than my own. Evaluate, respectively, for I wouldn’t want others to feel uncomfortable or notice that I’m starring at them.

Taking the time away from your own life to get to know another’s is rewarding on many levels.

It allows you to get to know a life other than your

own, which I feel we so often forget to do.

Think about it for a moment, when was the last time you consciously made an effort to get to know your neighbour or anyone for that matter?

I must say, having talks with my grandparents and the lives they lead, the friendships they had and the memories they shared, which often consisted of catching up over a cup of tea, not through texting or some technological portal that we often count on to do all the catching up for us.

I was having this very conversation with a friend the other night. At what point do we allow ourselves to become reliant on a technology to communicate our feelings?

I’m sure, no matter your age, for we all get wrapped up in them, cell phones become our life.

I feel they make a mockery of ones self, especially with the new technology these days that allows you to see when messages have been received and/ or read.

Let me tell you, whom ever invited that must thrive on drama in their life, for it surely causes unnecessarily drama in mine.

It just so happens more often than not when I check messages, often when busy, I forget to respond in a timely manner.

Let me tell you, the ignorant responses I get in return because of that brilliant technology that so effortlessly lets the one writing to me know that I’ve ignored them, or so it would seem.

It’s funny how a trip to Starbucks can evoke such a thought process, a long over due one at that.

Nonetheless, I suppose what I’m trying to convey to you all is to take the time to get to know one another again. Pour yourself a tea, pull up a chair and get reacquainted, for your own sake.

Lannadew is a 4 year old spayed female.

She came to us with a litter of kittens and was in foster care while they grew old enough to find their own homes.

Lannadew has been searching for her forever home since the end of May. She is a sweet loving cat who has suffered from frost bite on her ears while being homeless in the cold winter. Lannadew likes being with other cats and loves the attention our volunteers give her. She would make a lovely addition to any one’s home.

Rediscover Vanderhoof College of New Caledonia We are very pleased to be serving communities in the Nechako Region. The College of New Caledonia (CNC) is involved in many initiatives that meet community educational and social services needs.

CNC Nechako lives by the college’s mission statement as being “a comprehensive college, providing access to lifelong learning to facilitate in the achievement of personal and educational goals. We are responsive to the diverse needs of our clients, our employees, and the communities of our region. In the dynamic, consultative environment, we deliver quality programs and promote the success of every student”.

CNC-Nechako Region includes campuses in Fort St. James, Vanderhoof and Fraser Lake; it has been serving adult learners in the respective communities for more than 30 years. The regional campuses serve 12 multicultural communities of varying sizes with a total population of over 18,000 in a geographical area covering 1,105,900 hectares – half the size of Vancouver Island.

The role of CNCNechako is to equip learners to identify and meet the complex and evolving needs of their communities in ways that are culturally appropriate, economically and socially relevant, and wholly reflective of the adult learner. In addition to providing education opportunities the community campuses provide many social programs that benefit our local youth, adults, and seniors/elders.

Our vocational education program offerings develop and strengthen a variety of employability skills for individuals seeking to enter and reenter the workplace.

The Administrative Assistant Certificate program is one exam-

ple of a program that is truly a career kickstarter for many of the graduates. Many of the graduates have a job to go to before they have completed the program, or soon after!

The Nechako campuses are working closely with mining companies to ensure we are delivering training relevant to their needs. The Mining Resource Industry Certificate, Drill Core Technician and Surface Diamond Driller’s Helper will continue to be delivered at both our Vanderhoof and Fort St. James campuses. The Mineral Processing Operator is a new training program available this fall for individuals interested in mine processing employment opportunities.

Through the Ministry of Jobs, Tourism and Innovation - Employment Skills Access funding, campuses have successfully delivered fulltime training programs for Industrial Field Medic, Basic Security, Essential Office Skills, Resources Based Industries, Lumber Manufacturing, and Environmental Field Assistant.

Due to the popularity of the Targeted Initiative for Older Workers (TIOW), all three campuses have offered multiple deliveries in Fort St. James, Fraser Lake and Vanderhoof.

This very successful program is directed to unemployed workers

age 50 to 64 years of age where they update their skill sets that builds confidence in their ability to secure future employment.

The Aviation and Business Certificate program started in September 2011. The Aviation program called PilotPlus and is the only one offered in the north and prepares new commercial pilots for immediate employment as pilots in command in single engine aircraft operations with small and mid-level aviation companies. The College has an agreement with the University of the Fraser Valley and Coastal Pacific Aviation to transfer to a full four year bachelor’s degree in Aviation Business. The Aviation program utilizes two-state-of-theart full motion flying simulators and is now expanding to offer a range of shorter length courses.

Pumpkin Walk For 11 years the Vanderhoof Chamber of Commerce has coordinated the Great Pumpkin Walk, bringing to life Riverside Campground for Halloween night.

Thousands of local residents attend this social evening, enjoying a free cup of hot chocolate, the carved pumpkins lining the road, the campďŹ res where volunteers hand out candy, and the grand ďŹ nale: an awe inspiring ďŹ reworks display. In past years this fun family event has helped to reduce vandalism and mischief on Halloween night. It is held every year on October 31, no matter what day of the week that is.

The Pumpkin Walk starts at 5pm and the ďŹ reworks display at 8pm. The Great Pumpkin Walk is a signiďŹ cant event in Vanderhoof, funded entirely by the community.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved “Bill,” William Edward Leslie at Royal Inland Hospital with his family at his side.

Bill was 76 yrs old and was born in “The Old Leslie House” at Lejac.

He spent many years in the north before moving to Kamloops and finally residing in Logan Lake. He is predeceased by his mother, father and 6 brothers and 3 sisters. Desperately missing him is his wife of 46 yrs, Pat, and his 4 daughters, Valerie, Debbie, Wanda, Linda and their spouses. He leaves behind 7 cherished grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren who were a tremendous source of joy for him.

Bill was well known for his sense of humor, and quick wit. He always said that family was the most important part of his life. He was a source of inspiration and joy, a wonderful father, both as a role model and a patient, loving, kind person. He will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the honour of knowing him. He is forever in our hearts.

A memorial service was held for close family and friends on Saturday July 7th, 2012 at 11:00 St Michael’s Parish in Logan Lake with Father Ken officiating.
