Apartment vacancy rates at Sylvan Lake were among the lowest in the province earlier this year, according to Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.

In their spring rental market survey, released last month, CMHC pegged the community’s vacancy and availability rates at 1.1 per cent which compared to 22.1 per cent a year earlier. All the vacancies were for two bedroom apartments.

They recorded statistics from 262 units in ‘privately initiated apartment structures of three

units and over’. The majority of those (214) were two bedroom apartments.

Grande Prairie had an equal 1.1 per cent rate in the April survey while Cold Lake at 0.3 per cent and Okotoks at zero per cent were the only communities lower than Sylvan Lake.

Edmonton’s vacancy rate was 2.7 per cent while Calgary’s was 2.5 per cent.

On the high end was Wood Buffalo with a vacancy rate of 10.8 per cent, followed by Lethbridge (7.1) and Medicine Hat (7.0).

more people there was a 3.0 per cent vacancy rate compared to 4.7 per cent a year earlier.

Rental rates in Alberta increased 3.1 per cent for an average two bedroom apartment in existing structures from $1,029 to $1,055. In Calgary the price increase was 5.0 per cent (from 1,040 to $1,113) while in Edmonton it was 2.2 per cent (from $1,029 to $1,036).

Sylvan Lake showed average rents of $648 for one bedroom, $832 for two bedroom and $768 for three bedroom or larger units. Those prices were up 4.6, 1.6 and 2.2 per cents respectively.

The average rental apartment vacancy rate in Canada’s 35 major centres decreased slightly to 2.3 per cent in April from 2.5 per cent in the year earlier report.

“An overall improving job market over the last year, in conjunction with new migrants coming to Canada’s major centres, are factors that are supporting rental demand in Canada,” said Mathieu Laberge, Deputy Chief Economist at CMHC’s Market Analysis Centre.

“Immigrants, as well as young workers, usually tend to rent first and then move to homeownership.”

Sylvan Lake Half Ironman introduces new distance

Athletes participating in the 8th annual Runner’s Den Sylvan Lake Half Ironman Triathlon were able to take advantage of a new distance introduced this year, called the 1-60-10 race.

Competitors began in the waters of Sylvan Lake, where they swam for one kilometre. After finishing, they biked 60 km and then ran 10 km.

The standard Half Ironman race, consisting of a 2 km swim, 90 km bike ride, and 21 km run also took place.

Race director Joe Dixon said he received positive feedback from the athletes both on the new distance and on the recently completed Centennial Park.

“It’s always different because there’s always changes to the venue.

This year, Centennial Park is complete,” said Dixon. He added that in past years, the area had been under construction.

Dixon said registration this year has been the best for the past five to six years. The new distance was very popular, and Dixon said it will definitely return next year. Those in the lead on the bike portion of

the course were averaging 40 km per hour, said Dixon.

“It’s a fast course and they can really push it on the bike,” he said.

Dixon said the new distance is easier to train for, in addition to being better suited to the local landscape. He added that he thinks Sylvan Lake is one of the best venues in Alberta for a triathlon, because it has “one of the best lakes in the province, a beautiful bike ride, and a nice run.”

Teresa Richer of Red Deer placed first in the women’s Half Ironman division, which she calls a “personal best.” She placed third in the women’s division last year.

“I always try to reach personal best. Just try to obtain the unreachable,” she said.

Richer has been competing in racing events for 11 years. She trains every day, making sure she works on something different every time. She starts off slow, working her way up to longer distances.

“There’s no rest,” said Richer. She added that she plans to compete in the Subaru Ironman race in Penticton in August, which consists of a 3.8 km swim, a 180 km bike ride, and a 42.2 km run.

they keep her training routine more exciting and diverse. While she has no problem with the running portion of the event, she struggles with the swimming.

“I swam as a kid, then didn’t start until 2001 as an adult. I didn’t even know proper lane swim etiquette,” she said, adding that she began swimming as part of her triathlon training.

Richer said she always makes sure she has enough fuel and hydration while racing.

“I’m thinking about how my body feels at every moment,” she said.

Richer said the bike portion of the Sylvan Lake course was one of the most difficult she’s been on, but the running section is flat and very fast. She also said the water in Sylvan Lake was clean to swim in.

In the future, Richer hopes to compete in the Ironman World Championship race in Hawaii. She also hopes to increase interest in triathlon events.

Community celebrates Stanley Cup win with Colin Fraser

Downtown Sylvan Lake was abuzz with activity last Wednesday as it prepared for the arrival of the Stanley Cup with Los Angeles Kings player Colin Fraser.

A portion of 50th Street had been closed off between 50th Avenue and Lakeshore Drive to accommodate the festivities. People walked freely in the area, occasionally stopping at one of the many stalls lining the street.

Speakers on a stage at the intersection of 50th Street and Lakeshore Drive played music.

Around the stage in a semi-circle stood a

line of people, some of whom had been waiting for several hours for the chance to touch the Stanley Cup and get an autograph from Fraser.

Luke and Veronica Knight showed up to the festivities wearing Kings jerseys. They had driven from Calgary especially for the event, and Luke said he had taken the day off work.

“It’ll probably be the only time I can see a Kings Cup in Alberta,” he said.

Knight has been a fan of the Kings since Wayne Gretzky, his favourite hockey player of all time, played for them from 1988-1996.

He watched every game of the playoffs.

The Cup arrived by

boat, landing on the shores of Sylvan Lake around noon. Fraser, escorted by members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, was greeted with cheers from the assembled crowd as he entered the downtown area and ascended the stage.

Sylvan Lake mayor Susan Samson spoke at the event.

“Our very own resident Colin Fraser not only won the Cup but brought it home so we could share it,” she said.

Fraser and his family live in Sylvan Lake during the off-season. He used to play for the Red Deer Rebels, during which time he met his wife, who is from the

area. Originally from British Columbia, Fraser said he is proud to call Sylvan Lake and Central Alberta home.

“I really like it here.

It’s a small town and I enjoy it. I love Central Alberta,” said Fraser.

Those wanting a chance to touch the Cup were able to do so while wearing white gloves, before posing for a photo. After, they were able to have an item autographed by Fraser.

This is the second time Fraser has played for a Cup-winning team. He previously won it while playing for the Chicago Blackhawks in 2009-2010, after which he brought it to Surrey, B.C., where he grew up.

County agreed to increase costs for regional lift station

Increased costs for a component of the regional wastewater line around Sylvan Lake, left Lacombe County councillors to ante up some more money.

They unanimously agreed to the additional costs for the county so work could proceed on the North Shore Lift Station which will be located near the corner of Birchcliff Road and Range Road 1-4.

Councillors had previously agreed to pay $600,000 to have the project oversized to accommodate development in the county. They had also agreed to their portion of the commission’s cost and to upfront the costs attributed to other commission members to get the project moving.

Once bids came in, the low bid, from Knibb Development Ltd. of Standard, Alberta, was above the engineer’s estimate.

The initial estimate for the project was $1,848,000 while Knibb’s bid was $1,977,800. Engineering and project management costs will bring the total project cost to $2,205,975.

approved Knibb’s bid at their June 29 meeting subject to receiving additional grant funding from Alberta Transportation (based on the actual tender price) and confirmation from Lacombe County for the costs of oversizing.

Of the total cost, commission members, seven of the municipalities around the lake, are responsible for $154,418.

The county is required to pay for the oversizing it requires. The remaining portion comes from the province through the Water for Life program.

As a result of the increased costs, the amounts required from Lacombe County exceeded what had previously been approved by councillors.

Therefore they were presented with a series of motions to increase the amounts approved.

The motions were passed unanimously during their meeting last Tuesday. The included increasing the county’s maximum oversizing cost from $600,000 to $700,000. The county also agreed to upfront the commission members’ share ($154,418) if necessary.

As a commission member, Lacombe County

is already responsible for $117,451 of that amount and councillors approved this expenditure.

In his report to council, County Commissioner Terry Hager said it may not be necessary to upfront the shares of other

members, based on discussion at the commission meet. “All of the municipalities indicated they would be up fronting their share of the commission costs.”

“This lift station is critical to development on

the east side of Sylvan Lake,” said Hager. “Until we get this, development can’t move forward. We’d like to see it started this fall and completed. That’s similar timelines with developments.”

The Slopes of Sylvan

Lake subdivision, which is just north of the lift station, has been approved by the county and Belterra Land Company is already pre-marketing property in the 49 lot subdivision.

“I totally agree. With all the work we’ve put into

this area we have to go ahead with this,” said Councillor Cliff Soper.

Costs for the oversizing will be recovered by the county through offsite levies paid by developers who eventually hook into the system.

Let the games begin Millions around the world will have their eyes glued to the TV as the 2012 London Summer Olympic Games get underway later this week.

From July 27th - Aug. 12th, the world will be watching London, England as thousands of athletes from various countries will be vying for a spot on the podium to receive a coveted Olympic medal and the prestigious honour of being named one of the best in the world in their sport.

For London and England at large, the dreaded traffic congestion and other inconveniences of having so many people pour into the city pale compared to the tremendous benefits economically that will be pumped into the country, which has weathered its share of economic challenges over the past few years.

And for the fans making the trek to London, there is so much to take in it’s hard to know where to begin. People who call London home are excited about welcoming the world and sharing what their nation has to offer.

And as mentioned, from badminton to diving, to gymnastics and triathlon, beach volleyball and

wrestling, there is really something for everyone to enjoy.

There will be 26 Olympic sports in 34 venues, 10,500 Olympic athletes and 20,000 press and media on site. There will also be more than nine million tickets sold to various events throughout the Games.

The Games will be centred around the Olympic Park in east London, which will be the site of a number of new sports venues. Up to 180,000 spectators a day will enter the Park to enjoy the Games.

Responsible pet owners keep public spaces enjoyable for everyone When I lived in Argentina, dogs were everywhere. Street dogs were easy to tell from pet dogs, because they were always a mix of breeds, creating a medium-sized animal with a short, wiry coat. Pet dogs could be identified as a particular breed, usually a small one.

Argentineans loved their dogs, and often dressed them in clothing, complete with booties on their feet and ribbons in their fur. The street dogs were no less loved, and people often gave them scraps of food.

The street dogs formed packs and patrolled specific neighbourhoods. I was escorted many times by a dog to the end of a block, where he would refuse to go any further.

While the dogs were friendly, they had the habit of being in places where I was not as happy to see them. Despite being repeatedly shooed by waiters, outdoor restaurants were plagued by them. So were the beaches. The dogs loved chasing the tide as it flowed in and out, or barking at the fishermen as they brought in their day’s catch. The dogs also liked inviting themselves to spend time with

The street dogs in Argentina were in every city I visited. They were as common as steakhouses and cafes playing tango music. While at times they were helpful (I trusted their judgment of when it was safe to cross the street), more often than not, they were a nuisance.

Here in Sylvan, there is a reason you can feel relatively secure walking on the grass in bare feet, or why a dog chasing your car is not normally a concern. The reason is because pet owners here usually keep them under control.

While cleaning up after a dog is not anyone’s idea of fun, it’s part of owning a dog, and ensures public areas can be enjoyed by everyone the way they were meant to be.

Reader offers more observations on council’s vision Dear Editor, In regards to Matt Prete’s letter about the subdivision of Pierview having to fight the people we voted in to represent us, not the realtors.

We would just like to comment on how beautiful it was to drive around Gull Lake and see the signs everywhere stating that the campgrounds and trailer parks were all full.

We can remember a few years ago when it was like that here in Sylvan Lake.

Now you drive along the lake and see very few people, the businesses all empty, etc. We must admit that there were speed bumps in Gull Lake but not the type that would high center a trailer hitch.

Also there were several places where the public could launch their boats and park their vehicles for FREE, not the $40 that it costs here let alone then try to find a place to park the truck/trailer.

Now what the people of Sylvan Lake get to see are articles in the paper about how we have to fight ‘public representatives’ just to be able to keep green spaces, ignore the public wishes about intersections (781- Highway 11, sorry freeway), and see more trees destroyed in an

effort to correct mistakes made by the realignment of roads and intersections i.e. paving Memorial Trail instead of lights at 781 and Freeway 11.

After all of this there are even more projects to spend money on as lights will have to be put in at Highway 20 and Memorial Dr. with a total regrading of the approach as the crest is too high to allow for a proper line of sight to these lights.

All of this at the expense of the tax-paying public that they were sworn to represent.

Trust the people of this town by putting in regular speed bumps, a boat launch that the public can use complete with parking, regular no Taj Mahal washrooms and help the businesses that are shut-

ting down in the tourist/ beach area instead of trying to leave a legacy as town council.

Well if you read the political winds correctly

your legacy will be the way this council has destroyed the Town of Sylvan Lake in order to be the City of Sylvan Lake.

Maybe after all of this

we can vote in people who care about this town, our nature and the local business people who rely on the tourists in the summer to survive.

However, we all must realize that our taxes will go up in order to correct the damage that has already been done as this well of course include the

upkeep and maintenance of those wonderful washrooms. How much did they cost again?

Charges laid in connection with domestic disturbance

Saturday, July 14th 12:40 a.m. - RCMP were called to Range Road 10 and Hwy 11 after a report of a group of males standing in the middle of the roadway. Three intoxicated males were picked up by police at the location and were later found to be involved in the theft of a tour bus out of Lacombe. An adult male and two youths are facing theft charges out of Lacombe.

Saturday, July 14 1:33 a.m. - An assault in progress resulted in RCMP attending a residence in Bentley.

A complainant reported that a male was being assaulted by several people at the location and was found to be bleeding from the ears and eyes when police and EMS arrived. The male was treated for his injuries. The investigation is continuing.

Saturday, July 14th 2:48 a.m. - A female is facing charges of impaired driving and refusing to provide a breath sample after a witness called to report a female driving erratically in a parking lot on Hinshaw

RCMP Notes Special to Sylvan Lake News

Drive in Sylvan Lake. The female was arrested at the scene by RCMP. Sunday, July 15th 8:46 p.m. - RCMP attended Hazzard County Inn in Sylvan Lake following a complaint of a male being assaulted by another male on the street outside the bar. One male was bleeding from his eye and had hidden in his residence until police arrived.

A second male is facing charges of assault and fighting in public.

The male who was assaulted is also fined for fighting in public.

Monday, July 16th 9:56 p.m. - A collision on 40th Street by Lakeshore Drive in Sylvan Lake has resulted in charges being laid against one of the drivers. A male is facing charges including dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and failure to remain at the scene of an accident after three males

How is that possible? Two verses earlier he tells us how: “God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.” Notice it says that eternal life is a gift. It is not something you or I can earn or deserve.

were witnessed fleeing the scene after colliding with a light standard. When one of the males returned to the area, he was detained by bystanders until police arrived.

Tuesday, July 17th 11:30 p.m. - Charges have been laid against a male and a female in connection with a domestic disturbance on Lakeshore Drive in Sylvan Lake.

RCMP attended a parking lot on Lakeshore Drive where a male and female were involved in an altercation. The female advised she was thrown to the ground off a fifth wheel vehicle. Further investigation resulted in the male being charged with assault and the female facing a charge of mischief under $5,000.

Thursday, July 19th 8:30 p.m. - A male is charged with impaired driving and blood alcohol over .08 after a single vehicle collision was reported on Highway 11 at Highway 781.

The vehicle hit a median then went into the ditch. There were no injuries. The driver was arrested at the scene.

Local motocross rider to compete at national event

For 10-year-old motocross racer Gage Matwiy, the opportunity to compete at the Walton TransCan Grand Amateur Nationals in Ontario has him “really pumped and excited about racing.”

According to the event website, Canadian competitors qualify for the event after riding in Amateur National Qualifiers races. A certain number of spaces are available to each province.

There are seven positions for Alberta.

Gage has been doing motocross racing since he was five years old. He first became interested in it because his father participated in the sport.

He said the high jumps and speed of it caught his eye.

“I love the adrenaline rush, going fast and doing really high jumps,” he said. He added that he has met a number of his friends through motocross racing.

His mother Natasha Matwiy said he has been racing every weekend

since May, in addition to doing physical training focusing on his core muscles.

She said motocross racing is a ver y physically demanding sport.

“I’m proud of him,” she said. “I’m actually that really laid back mom that can deal with all of it without freaking out.”

Gage, who hopes to place among the top five or 10 competitors, said he thinks he was chosen to compete because of his speed and agility.

“I feel really happy.”

Despite his

achievements, his biggest goal is to beat his motocross friends in a race, who he said are also skilled racers.

The Grand Amateur Nationals will take place from Aug. 14-19. Gage is looking for a race sponsor, who will have his or her name or company displayed on his bike, jersey, and trailer. He is also looking to fundraise for the trip to Ontario. Those wishing to donate can contact Natasha Matwiy at 403-350-2720.

Memorial tournament There are still a few spots open in the fourth annual Stacy Regier Memor ial G olf Tournament which runs July 28 at Meadowlands Golf Club.

Registration runs from 10:30 a.m. to noon with a start time of 1 p.m.

Dinner and a cash bar are at 6 p.m. followed by a silent auction and an awards presentation.

Tournament proceeds will support the intensive care unit at the Foothills Medical Centre through the Calgary Health Trust.

According to the Stacy Regier Legacy web site, Regier loved the Meadowlands Golf Course and all of the people who worked and played there.

“She enjoyed the game of golf as well as the interaction with all those who shared her passion for the game.”

mendous success, raising $26,745.

In 2010 with the downturn in the economy they raised $17,200. And last year organizers raised $36,600 and saw a record attendance of 140 golfers participating.

Children will have a chance to connect to rural Alberta of the 1920s, as Stephansson House Provincial Historic Site introduces new summer day camps.

Day camps will run rain or shine, with the day’s program based on the weather and the age of participants. Camps will focus on traditional pioneer crafts, traditional games and outdoor activities, and will include a chance to bake using Helga Steph-

ansson’s wood burning stove. Costumed interpreters will guide children through all activities and introduce them to a world long before computer games and social media.

Music campers learn performance techniques, confidence

The stage was set, the lights were dim, and the audience was seated. The performers stood ready, their silhouettes moving slightly.

Adele’s “Rollin’ in the Deep” played on the speakers as the lights went on and the performers began singing and walking forward. It was the conclusion of House of Music’s week-long Diva BootCamp last Friday, with participants showing everything they had been working on. A final show

for the musical theatre camp had taken place earlier in the day.

House of Music coowner Meg Callan wrote and directed both shows with Laura Lee Lewis. She said the camps were as much about learning performance and vocal techniques as they were about building confidence. This is achieved through improvisational games and voice lessons, among other activities. Campers also keep a journal so they can communicate thoughts they might not feel comfortable sharing, said Callan, and there is lots of encouragement

throughout the week.

Callan and Lewis make an effort to understand different personality types, especially those who might feel nervous about performing. Lewis said she was shy as a child, so she can relate to how they might be feeling.

“We just encourage them to push themselves with baby steps out of their comfort zones,” said Lewis.

Callan said audiences have been statistically proven to like performers before they have even begun, which she makes sure to tell camp participants.

The Diva BootCamp is exclusively for girls, and focuses in particular on building self-esteem.

“We have a diva creed that we read every day,” said Callan.

Both camps run for three hours a day for five days. Auditions are held on the first day, which allow Callan and Lewis to determine the abilities of the participants. That night, they decide what role each camper will play in the performances, and they also write the script for the musical theatre camp.

“We just get a feel for how much of a load they’re

able to carry that week.

When you write the script you just keep them in mind,” said Callan.

Diva BootCamp is more intense than the musical theatre camp, said Callan. Auditions are held at the beginning, after which participants are assigned roles based on their abilities.

“There’s the idea that you need to work for your part,” said Callan. “There is an element of pressure because this is a performance.”

ity from having to memorize their lines on time.

Ainsley McCallum, 11, has been participating in Diva BootCamp for four years. She keeps coming back because of the people she’s met, and because the performance is different every year.

Ainsley takes voice lessons with Lewis, and hopes to be a singer one day.

“It’s kind of my dream,” she said. She has loved singing since she was three years old.

“At Christmas time I used to belt out all the songs I knew,” she said. “I like how you can express yourself with every song, and you don’t have to pretend to be anyone else.”

Ainsley said she has become less shy from participating in the camp and from taking voice lessons.

While she has always loved singing, she said she spent more time “behind the curtain” at her first

camp. She describes the anticipation of performing as a “rollercoaster,” and said she has butterflies before she steps on stage.

“Then when you get out there, it’s just the excitement that matters.”

Callan said she enjoys teaching young people at the camps.

“It’s so refreshing, their innocence is inspiring,” she said. “It’s nice to have an impact on that age group in your community.”

Callan and Lewis have been running the camps for five years. Diva BootCamp participants receive a professional photoshoot by Lewis, who is also a photographer, and a CD recording produced

by House of Music. The next camps will run Aug. 20-24, and they are open to ages seven and above.

Majority agreed with council’s decision not to mess with lake level

A majority of those who raised their hands at Jarvis Bay’s annual meeting July 14 supported their councillors’ unanimous decision that they should not be messing with the lake level.

“This council, your council, unanimously says this isn’t going to work, this isn’t the solution,” Mayor Bob Thomlinson told the audience after reviewing graphs of cyclical changes and statistics on the volume of water in the lake.

You’d have to remove roughly one million cubic metres of water to take the lake level down one inch, he said. Currently about 33 million cubic metres disappears annually by evaporation, according to the mean average.

The outlet creek accounts for another 1.6 million cubic metres of water a year flowing from the lake.

“You can mess around with the creek by doing a bunch of small things but that’s not going to make a lot

of difference,” he concluded.

“Your council believes this is a cycle.

If the nice weather continues, and the rain holds off, it will go down. We cannot support tinkering with this.”

But he added, in answer to a question, that if the lake level continues to increase there is a potential solution which was discussed in a 1994 report.

That’s to expand the capacity of the outlet channel all the way to Cygnet Lake and put in a control structure.

When that solution was proposed, at a cost of about $800,000, there were a number of provisos. The total excluded all environmental studies, gathering stakeholder input, and engineering costs.

Today we’d be looking at $2-$2.5 million.

“I’ve been here 50 years and I’ve seen the beach come and go and come and go,” said Councillor Annabelle Wiseman.

We don’t have the capacity to do it right now. We need to have proof some calamity is coming. At the moment (Alberta) Environment is saying it’s a lake and it goes up and goes down.

He noted, as well, that during a meeting at the creek a representative from Fisheries and Oceans Canada said they wouldn’t approve work that would disturb the critical pike spawning habitat.

“If you were part of the town, your taxes would be 73 per cent higher,” said Thomlinson.

• A $60,000 budget item, under their recreation and culture category, is to pay the municipality’s portion of the cost of a bridge over the outlet creek in the Twin Fawn subdivision. When work begins in the subdivision a pathway and bridge will be added that will help get foot traffic and bicycles off Highway 20.

Speaking to the last item, Thomlinson said the summer village has contracted the Corps of Commissionaires to patrol and respond to complaints in a marked vehicle seven days a week. He noted though they can’t handle moving vehicle violations.

• The speed is being lowered to 30 km/hr in the more cottagey area where roads are narrower with trees closer, there’s more parking on the roads and blind driveways.

Thomlinson said last year they raised the limit in the north Jarvis Bay area to 40 but have

since realized they made a mistake. The speed limit change affects the area north to the entrance to Jarvis Bay Estates and to the end of the curve where roads widen with ditches and fewer people park on them. Signs will be erected shortly.

“There has been a request for speed bumps — really that’s a last resort,” said Thomlinson. “Council does not want to look at it unless it’s really necessary.”

• An open house is scheduled for July 28 from 2-5 p.m. at the summer village office

regarding bylaw and regulatory changes proposed as part of the Municipal Development Plan update.

• Discussion also took place on ways the summer village could control access to the lake and placement of boat lifts. One resident was concerned that with the possibility of Sandbar Estates subdivision being created across Highway 20 they would be inundated with people from that area trying to use their access road.

Local beach volleyball players headed to Alberta Summer Games

Sylvan Lake’s Olivia Barnes, along with her beach volleyball teammate Rivver Flewell from Red Deer, is headed to Lethbridge for the 2012 Alberta Summer Games.

The games, which will run from July 26-29, provide an opportunity for amateur athletes to compete at a provincial level.

Barnes, 16, has been playing beach volleyball for three years, and club volleyball since she was in grade six. Her first experience with it was in

gym class at school, where she noticed she particularly enjoyed playing it compared to other sports. “I like the sport and I’ve just always done it.

It’s something I’ve always been interested in,� said Barnes, adding that beach volleyball appealed to her because it takes place outside. She said getting used to the different ball, which is slightly bigger with a lower inflation pressure than a standard volleyball, was difficult at times.

Beach volleyball is played in teams of two,

and last Thursday marked the second time Barnes had practiced with Flewell. “Once they get familiar with each other it gets better,� said coach Wayne Halliday. “The girls have been playing for a long time, they just need to play well together.� He added that the pair have had good energy together.

Barnes is looking forward to playing against different teams at a higher level of competition. “We’re hoping that we’ll gel really good together, and just be on

our best games, and just have lots of fun doing it,� said Barnes.

Flewell is also looking forward to it, and hopes they do well. “It’ll be a good experience, to get to see all the best competition,� said Flewell.

Halliday said both girls play very well, and he thinks they will place in fourth or higher. “I’m hoping to medal, we’re fairly strong,� said Halliday.

He has been coaching for six years with the Sylvan Lake Volleyball Club, and will be attend-

Rural practice has been rewarding for retiring doctor

After 33 years of practice in Sylvan Lake and Eckville, Dr. Ron Smith has semi-retired.

He plans to “read all the books I never had time to read, get back into bagpipe playing, and spend quality time with my kids, wife, grandkids, and dogs.”

He will continue to run the Bentley Medical Clinic part-time with his wife, as he has done for the past 12 and a half years.

“We’re going to help folks out,” said Smith in a soft Scottish accent, adding that there are no other doctors in Bentley.

Smith graduated from the University of Glasgow in 1973. He worked in Scotland before immigrating to Canada in 1975 and completing a residency at the University of Alberta.

He came to Sylvan Lake in 1978.

“We thought that Canada was the land of opportunity I guess,” said Smith, adding that there were 3,000 people in Sylvan Lake at the time.

The first few years of work were tough, said Smith. He was on-call every second night and every second weekend.

“The job came first and the family came second.

And I regret that now,” he said, adding that he was brought up in the Scottish tradition with a strong work ethic. “My wife says I’m a workaholic.”

Smith has been working at the Bentley clinic by himself since it began. He said he couldn’t have run it without the help of his wife, who worked as a nurse.

“In the early years she was more like a single parent because I was away so much,” said Smith. “There was no doctor in town, and we felt we needed to help

Practicing in a rural area has been very rewarding because of the variety he’s seen, the people he’s gotten to know, and the scope of his practice. He has been able to treat conditions that would not be seen in a city.

Rural physicians look after their own problems, and are limited only by their own limitations, said Smith.

“We try and do everything ourselves. The important thing is to know your own limitations,” said Smith. He added that if he had doubts about a case, it was better to refer it to someone who knew more about it.

Smith said he used to enjoy delivering babies.

“I thought it was probably time to quit when people came to me and said, Don’t waste time sifting through garbage online.

‘Oh, you delivered me,’ and they’re having their own baby,” he said.

Smith said family practice has changed significantly in the last 10-15 years. There has been more government intervention, he said, adding that he’s not sure if that’s a good thing.

He also said family physicians are different than they used to be, because they take more time off to spend with their families, which he said he would do if he had his time over again.

There is also now a greater reliance on technology, said Smith, adding that he thinks the change is good.

“A lot of what we had to rely on was clinical training.” He added that now, physicians are able to get more definitive answers more quickly.

“It’s something I’ve always wanted to do,” said Smith when asked why he chose such a demanding profession. “It’s telling that none of my sons went into medicine, because they saw the lifestyle.”

Smith plans to continue living at his current residence in Half Moon Bay, and said he has enjoyed helping people during his years in family practice.

“It’s very rewarding,” he said. “I loved it. I wouldn’t do anything else.”
