Golf for the Cure event nets nearly $3,000 for A Clear View

Posing in the shape of the breast cancer ribbon, 82 golfers played nine holes before going in for dinner and a silent auction featuring donations from artists and others. In total, the night brought in $2,888 for A Clear View ~ digital mammography campaign, bringing it over the $830,000 mark.

Submitted This week, thanks to the Fernie Ladies Golf Club and its annual Golf for the Cure event, the A Clear View ~ digital mammogra-

phy campaign received additional awareness and ¿nancial support towards its fundraising efforts.

“The Golf for the Cure event is something we have been doing over

the past 8 years to help support the Canadian Cancer Society,” explains Pat Moore, a coorganizer of the event.

“This year the CCS gave us their approval to extend an invitation to the

East Kootenay Foundation for Health so that some of the proceeds from the silent auction and a draw could go to the digital mammography campaign which has a direct impact on

us here in the region.”

The evening was spectacular as 82 women set out to play nine-holes of golf surrounded by a sea of pink-clad golfers and the breathtaking course and mountains.

Travel and bring everyone along.

Back inside a scrumptious salmon dinner was served and a bevy of prizes given out. Followed by EKFH’s Donna Grainger providing an overview of the bene¿ts the equipment will have for the region and the success of the campaign to date.

When the silent auction closed (thanks to the proceeds from many pieces of art work compliments of the Clothesline Art Sale & Auction) and other generously donated items; bidders provided an additional $2235 to the equipment goal.

One of the highlights of the evening was a special draw which saw the winner Sandra Graham, herself a breast cancer survivor, donating all her proceeds back to the mammography campaign.

By the time the night was over the A Clear View campaign was graced with a gift of $2,888 bringing the total dollars raised for the campaign to just over the $830,000 mark.

Due to receding water levels at Wasa Lake, BC Parks will be re-opening the boat launches.

“We have been talking with BC Parks and this week it was decided the boat launches would re-open,” explains Melody Munro, acting Information Of¿cer.

“While this is good news for boaters, there are still some sensitive areas at the south end of the Lake because of the Àooding, so we’re asking them to respect a no-wake zone in that area.”

On the July long weekend BC Parks closed the boat launches and residents were asked to voluntarily keep boats parked. Boats and their wakes could have created more damage to homes that had been Àooded and potentially could have knocked over sandbag berms.

“The public and residents have been very respectful in keeping boats off the lake during this time to allow water levels to drop,” Munro adds. “We are urging boaters to re-

spect this no-wake zone because there are still some houses that have sandbags protecting them and water levels are still higher than normal.”

The voluntary nowake zone will be from the west side of the lake at Lodgepole Road to the east side of the lake at Cedar Road. Notices will be posted in the

Start by measuring your door or window in order to calculate the exact number of bead strings you’ll need. Then measure the height from the curtain rod to the ground and, using some sharp pliers, cut pieces of smallgauge metal wire to the desired lengths. Walk for A Clear View raises nearly $2,500

The 5 km walk encouraged people to walk or run and gather pledges for their efforts while making an impact to the fundraising efforts of East Kootenay Foundation for Health and the digital stereotactic mammography campaign.

On Sunday, July 22 under a bright and brilliant blue sky approximately 40 walkers took part. “I was just ecstatic to see the response, I really didn’t know what to expect so it was heartwarming to see people give their support,” says Salanski.

The group made up of young and old, local residents & visitors and even a Mayor (Dean McKearcher of Elkford) and a Board Chair (Brian Clifford of EKFH) all coming out because breast cancer touched their lives. The 5 km welcomed walkers to

enjoy a scenic tour of the South Country including a bridge walk over Lake Koocanusa accompanied by the sound of laughter and stories told of loved ones who tackled breast cancer head on.

Upon arrival at the Koocanusa Campsite members from Grasmere’s Triangle Women’s Institute provided participants with delicious and healthy homemade muf¿ns, fresh fruit, and water and even an early morning hot dog and ice cream cone for the kids.

Event organizer, Wendy Salanski then shared the news that the suggested $1,000 fundraising event goal was more than doubled with a ¿nal tally of $2,490 going to the campaign.

Thanks where thanks is due After the recent Àooding disasters to hit the area, the Regional District of Central Kootenay relied on, and was very thankful for the efforts of the province.

Below is a letter to the premier thanking her for the help.

Dear Premier Clark: On behalf of the Regional District of Central Kootenay I want to sincerely thank you and your government for the immediate and effective response to our letter requesting help. As you know, we were among many throughout the province looking at potentially disastrous implications from inordinate rains and run off.

My ¿rst initial response after our Board asked for help was to get on the phone and call our “go to guy” in the Kootenays, MLA Bill Bennett. My call was to let him know of what we believed to be an impending disaster with water levels rising to 75-year-highs throughout our regional district. MLA Bennett immediately sprang into action on a Sun day and started the ball rolling involving Minister Rich Coleman, Minister Shirley Bond and Minister Steve Thompson.

Bill Bennett started an effort to help coordinate what was appearing to be an international event given the Columbia River Treaty and the operation of Libby Dam which heavily impacts Canada and our region.

I also understand you were involved with the Sunday activity and for this I truly appreciate your leadership.

I want to go on record as saying that in the 12 years I have been involved with the Colum-

bia River Treaty through meetings with the Army Corps of Engineers, BC Hydro and Fortis, I have never seen the coordination and cooperation from both sides of the border concerning reaction to Àows and information as took place during the last three weeks. In my opinion, it gave us the leg up to prepare for what looked to be a catastrophic Àood event. To my knowledge, never in the history of the Columbia River Treaty have the parties met daily on phone conferences with all affected participants who were asked for input no matter their station in life. As a result of this incredible cooperation, we (Canada) requested and were granted by the Army Corp of Engineers the action that saw Libby and Koocanusa go “full pool” plus two feet. If we had not agreed with the Americans on this never-before-tried tactic I honestly believe we would have had millions of dollars of additional damage over and above what we suffered throughout the Regional District areas.

We even had MP David Wilks and MP Alex Atamanenko involved offering help wherever they could.

Kudos to BC Hydro and the exemplary folks they brought to the table; thanks also to Fortis, but most certainly the Army Corp of Engineers who showed up in force to help us deal with the situation that saw June precipitation exceed 400 per cent of normal. Additionally, on July 5, 2012 Libby Dam reached a peak level of 2,459.9 feet–the highest level on record. This

was truly a team effort on an international basis and everyone involved should be thanked.

Lastly, I want to again thank our friend MLA Bill Bennett for his immediate and constructive effort on behalf of all the folks throughout the Kootenays. We have all been well served by his and your government’s leadership and action during this event.

We have stretched our Regional District Emergency Operations to the limit. I am proud to say we did it without complaint and in an organized professional manner even though many of our folks were working 18-hour days for the past two weeks.

I am very proud of all involved. I know the days ahead will see waters receding and thus exposing what may be a huge ¿nancial encumbrance for those folks impacted by this once in a 75-year event. It is in the spirit of helping those that have been hurt that I hope the government considers ample funding for the Provincial Emergency Programs that will most certainly be inundated with claim requests.

PEP did a fantastic job working with our emergency operations and now we should all work together to assist those most in need.

Thank you again on behalf of the Regional District of Central Kootenay for your support and leadership.

Running a marathon each day to protest cuts

Ian Cunliffe, a primary teacher, will be starting a 1,100 kilometre walk/ run from Sparwood on August 8 to protest cuts to public education by the Province.

Submitted His classroom may be closed for the summer, but North Vancouver primary teacher Ian Cunliffe won’t be taking any time off. On August 8, Ian will begin in Sparwood, BC, to run and walk over 1,100 km across British Columbia. An incredible attempt of a marathon a day for 22 days to draw public attention to the decade of staggering cuts to BC public education by the Liberal government.

In his six years of teaching, Ian has witnessed the continued erosion of funding to schools across British Columbia and the impact these cuts are having on students. With an education funding shortfall once more

overburdened counsellors and learning assistance teachers, and unsupported special needs students.

The public needs to understand what’s going on. They need to start asking why private schools have continued to receive increased funding while public schools are having their funding hacked to the bone.

It’s time for people to demand that government commit to adequately funding our public school system to ensure every student has an equal opportunity to succeed.”

OBITUARY Mary Toth August 20, 1948 - July 23, 2012 It is with great sorrow that the family of Mary Toth announces her passing on Monday, July 23, 2012 in Cranbrook, British Columbia at 63 years of age after a courageous battle with cancer.

Mary was born on August 20, 1948 in Acsteszer, Hungary and came to Canada in 1969. She lived on Texada Island before moving to Kimberley in 1977. Mary's passion was her children and grandchildren whom she loved dearly. Her loves were her garden, the outdoors in general, her many friends from her time working at the Kimberley Hospital, and all her neighbours - old and new.

Mary is survived by her loving husband Jim Hughes, daughter Treena Gustar, son Jim (Cori Lynn) Toth, grandchildren Sydney and Spencer Gustar, Kole, Emma and Taylor Toth, step-daughters Deborah Harris and Nikki Hughes, and extended family in Hungary.

A special thank you to a very dear friend, Judith Gaschnitz, for your loving support and also all Mary's amazing friends who spent countless hours visiting her in the hospital.

A celebration of Mary's life will be held at the Elk's Hall in Kimberley on Tuesday, July 31, 2012 at 3:00 pm. Those wishing to make a memorial donation in Mary's honour may do so to the: Canadian Cancer Society, 19 - 9th Avenue South, Cranbrook, British Columbia, V1C 2L9.
