Welcome To Riverboat Days 2012 In 1912 the sternwheeler the SS Inlander made its last trip down the Skeena River. A rail line had been constructed from the coast to Hazelton and in 1914 the last spike would be struck to complete Canada’s second transcontinental railroad. The era of the sternwheeler was over. One hundred years later the sternwheeler still figures prominently in the telling of the history of this place--Riverboat Days being a chance to reflect on the pioneer and First Nations history of Terrace and area. One hundred years ago we would have gathered by the Skeena with high expectations awaiting the arrival of the first sternwheeler of the season. Now we gather at twilight excited to witness fireworks cascading above Ferry Island, or in George Little Park to listen and dance to the best bands of the northwest. Riverboat Days celebrates the Spirit of the Skeena. Yes Riverboat Days are here! And for the second year in a row, there are over 50 events to make it a very fun and very busy ten days in August. The mainstays of the Legion Parade, Fireworks over Ferry Island, Concerts in the Park and the Riverside Festival are sure to draw crowds. But you can also enjoy quiet moments appreciating visual art, or jump right into any number of sporting events or go for the fast and loud with auto-racing! Among the new events this year are a Magic Show for kids, a Rugby 7s Tournament, talks about pioneer plants and riverboat landings, a Community Fitness Challenge, fundraisers for local and overseas projects, and Farmers Appreciation Day at the Farmers Market. The Riverboat Days Society recognizes the invaluable contribution of time, dollars and enthusiasm made by individuals, the business community, non-profit organizations, local and First Nation governments and the media to make Riverboat Days such a success. This year we especially acknowledge the financial contributions made to the Society by Rio Tinto Alcan, BC Hydro and Imperial Metals. To our visitors, welcome. To everyone, have a safe and fun Riverboat Days 2012!

The Riverboat Days Society is thrilled to bring award winning Kelowna magician Leif David to Terrace to perform his Family Magic Show on Tuesday, August 7. His shows combine magic, music and audience participation. Also on Tuesday he will be on downtown streets mixing it up with locals and tourists performing “Mingling Magic.” Also planned for August 7 is the annual Kiddies Parade. This year with the Skeena Mall in renovations, the parade is moving outside to George Little Park. Kids can decorate bikes or wagons or whatever—just for the fun of it. Heritage Park Museum has revamped their children’s craft workshops this year to focus on Tsimshian traditions. These will certainly be hands on and educational workshops. They are also very affordable at just $5 per child per workshop. On Saturday, August 4, the Totem Saddle Club is offering pony rides at the Thornhill Community Grounds. A helmet is required but the Club can supply one if necessary. The cost is “by donation.” Not quite new but also worth checking out are “Paint a Plate,” the tour of the Eby Street Fish Hatchery, the Paint, Chalk and Print event, Cattle Sorting and the Railway Car Open House.
