TERRACE - Maria and Luigi Maddalena have been selling their produce at the Terrace Farmer’s Market since 1986. Here they are at the July 21 market, where they ran out of all their stock except these cherries, picked the night before. President of the Farmer’s Market Norm Frank said right now about 10 per cent of the booths sell locally grown food but he expects that number to double as the area enters a late harvest season near the end of August.

KITIMAT - After 29 sleepless negotiation hours, Rio Tinto Alcan (RTA) reached a tentative agreement with its unionized workers last Tuesday. Starting at 7 a.m. July 23 and finishing at noon July 24, representatives from the Canadian Autoworkers Union (CAW) Local 2301 and RTA kneaded out a temporary contract to replace the one that expired at midnight July 24. This contract came in time to stop a looming strike that was set to start at the same time, as 72 hour notice was given to RTA by
the union last Friday. The tentative contract includes increased worker pay and benefits among other things, and both parties are pleased with the result. Contract ratification meetings were held yesterday and this morning at Mount Elizabeth High School Gym. “We think it’s a good deal for both the employees and the company and it’s for five years, said RTA spokesperson Colleen Nyce of the tentative agreement. “All of our agreements cover off employees who work in the smelter and employees who work in our powerhouse in Kemano. Nyce said the contract negotiated is a standard type contract.

“We negotiated wages and we negotiated certain other operational benefits for the employees, she said. “The tone of the negotiations was very good and both parties worked very diligently and respectfully to reach an agreement and they did so without a labour stopping so we’re very pleased about that. The contract was negotiated for a five-year term. As stated in a union press release last Tuesday, some of its details include wage increases at three per cent after one year, 2.5 for year two, 2.5 per cent for year three, 2.5 per cent for year four and three per cent for year five. A job security letter was re-
signed, meaning there will be no layoffs. All temporary workers will be hired to full time. Five terminated temporary welders will be hired to full time. A $2500 signing bonus for regulars, temporaries and LTD members is included as well as an agreement on classifications for workers in the KMP. The tentative contract also included pension multiplier increases, retiree benefits increases, active employee benefit increases and increases to shift, weekend, skilled trades and kemano premiums. “Five years is very good for us because it takes us through the modernization, said Nyce.
