ormer RCMP Cpl. Benjamim Monty Robinson is expected to learn his fate Friday (July 27) in New Westminster Supreme Court when a sentence in his obstruction of justice case is handed down.

The Crown is seeking a three to ninemonth jail term for Robinson who was convicted this spring of obstruction of justice in the October 2008 motor vehicle accident death of 21-year-old Tsawwassen motorcyclist Orion Hutchinson.

"In general, a crime of obstruction of justice is a crime which strikes to the heart of the system," Crown prosecutor Kris Pechet told the court during Robinson's sentencing hearing last Friday (July 20).

Earlier that same day, RCMP officials announced Robinson was no longer a member of the force.

RCMP Dep. Comm. Craig Callens said he signed papers to discharge Robinson.

"While I have been clear that I was seeking his involuntary dismissal, the opportunity to discharge him from the organization this morning was one which eliminated further delays, costs and uncertainty," Callens said in a statement.

Robinson's lawyer David Crossin asked the judge for a conditional sentence of three to six months, including time spent in an alcohol

rehab facility.

"In my view, the shame and paralysis that resulted from the weight and the publicity and the vitriol in this community basically rooted him [Robinson] in a kind of purgatory," Crossin told the court.

Crossin submitted a letter from the Edgewood rehab facility—whose website describes it as a private residential facility in Nanaimo specializing in addiction treatments and substance abuse therapy—stating Robinson has been sober for the past 100 days.

After the crash at 64 Ave. and Gilchrist Dr. in Tsawwassen, Robinson gave his driver's licence to a bystander and left the scene to walk his children home. When he returned, he told police he had downed two shots of vodka at home to calm his nerves.

The Crown said Robinson's sentence should reflect the degree of responsibility of the offender, in this case a police officer in a position of authority, "These acts occurred from an officer who had special training and expertise provided to him at the time of the RCMP, on their time and at the expense of the public ultimately," Pechet told the court last Friday.

Crossin argued that denunciation can be addressed with sentences well short of incarceration. He also addressed Robinson's Aboriginal status.

"The fact is Mr. Robinson is an Aboriginal offender …," said Crossin. "I have discussed

this issue with my client and we are agreed that this is not a case where that issue is front and centre. But the only issue I would ask the court to consider in that regard is the issue of alcohol abuse in the aboriginal context."

On the defence's call for a conditional sentence, Kasey Schell, Hutchinson's step-sister, said, "I think that's a little silly. I think that maybe he should be made an example of for the RCMP." Schell said Robinson has not displayed any remorse, adding, "his silence so far has been just cowardly to me."

Making a victim's impact statement in court, Hutchinson's father Glenn, a Delta firefighter, shakily revealed his difficulty in dealing with his son's death.

"The only logical solution was to finish it all. I simply had nothing left to live for," said Glenn, adding that after taking care of his personal details he "tried multiple times", but bizarre events prevented his death.

"So right now —aside from still being alive—I have nothing. But from the onset of this trial I understood that no matter what the outcome was there was never going to be satisfaction, justice or anything that would come close to replacing the loss of my beautiful son."

Delta Police say there is still no sign of an alleged sex offender, formerly of Tsawwassen, who skipped his court date on June 11.

Vancouver resident Jamieson Richard (Rick) Glendinning was due in Surrey Provincial Court for the start of his trial on nine criminal counts including sexual assault, indecent assault and gross indecency. A warrant was issued for his arrest after he failed to appear.

“At this point there is no update,” said Delta Police spokesperson Cst. Ciaran Feenan. “We are still actively looking for him.”

Glendinning was involved with the Tsawwassen Amateur Baseball Association between 1985 and 1995.

Feenan said anyone with information about Glendinning’s whereabouts should contact Delta Police at 604946-4411.

Truck crash closes Hwy. 17 Highway 17 was closed southbound for several hours Monday (July 23) after a dump truck lost control and overturned around noon just south of Delta Municipal Hall.

RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Peter Thiessen said the single vehicle accident occurred after the truck and trailer loaded with a commodity, possibly gravel, hit multiple barriers on the highway. The truck's load was strewn all over the road.

There were no reported injuries.

Traffic was diverted from Highway 17 and snarled routes along Ladner Trunk Rd. and Arthur Dr. Deas Island Highway Patrol are investigating along with Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement.

South Deltans make trip to help in Cambodia The Richmond-based Way Community Church has sent a team of six people from their church who live in South Delta to Phnom Penh, Cambodia, from July 20-29. While there the group will be working at an English camp, teaching, playing and helping the children. They will also be taking over some needed supplies for the Ratanak Traditional home that will be opened at the end of July. This is a home for the children who have been rescued from human trafficking. Taking part are Peter and Wendy Vander Velde (Ladner), Jewel Tunnicliffe (Ladner), Stephanie Tetzel (Tsawwassen), Terrie Sherbino (Ladner), and Shawn Macdonell (Tsawwassen).

Warm weather can be a hazard to your pet Delta Community Animal Shelter staff remind owners not to keep pets locked in cars during the summer PHILIP RAPHAEL EDITOR

Delta Community Animal Shelter officials are reminding pet owners not to keep their animals in their vehicle during the warm weather.

Sarah Lowe, shelter manager, said it can take just five to 10 minutes for the temperature inside a vehicle to rise to dangerous levels that can lead to serious illness and even death.

It’s a situation that’s sadly all too prevalent in the summer as shelter officers answer roughly two calls a day to retrieve animals that have been reported to be in distress inside locked vehicles.

One recent incident involved a male dog, a female dog and her six puppies who were left inside a truck in a North Delta parking lot.

Lowe said the shelter’s animal control officers have the right to make a forced entry to rescue animals.

“Usually we get help from the Delta Police, but if we have to, we can break the glass on a car to get in,” Lowe said, adding a thorough assessment is done before any action is taken.

On this occasion shelter staff gained access to the truck and retrieved the dogs.

“Even if the (vehicle’s) windows are all the way down, the dog has water, you’re parked in the shade on a windy day—if it’s sunny people call us because they are worried,” Lowe said. “That’s totally

With the forecast for warmer temperatures this weekend, Lowe added it’s important to remember animals are wearing fur coats and without proper ventilation and water in a vehicle it can create a serious situation.

“It’s difficult to get proper ventilation in a car or truck. You’d have to put the windows pretty

much down all the way, and then how are you going to contain your animal in the vehicle,” Lowe said.

“Water is really the way animals cool themselves. And it’s important they have access to cool water, not some that has been left sitting in a ray of sunshine. That won’t do much.”

Cheryl who brings her 16 years of experience in the restaurant industry to the operation.

"We have worked really hard making the restaurant have that wharf feel to it since our dad used to sell fish there," Lisa says.

While the idea had been percolating for years, the move to make it a reality happened quickly.

"All of sudden it all just came together," Lisa says. "But we all had the same vision and put our heart and souls into it."

Cheryl says she has a definite passion for the food business.

"I have since I was a little girl," she says. "Every day before school I'd get up early and pretend I had my own cooking show and restaurant."

Now that she is helping run her own place the goal is to specialize in fish and chips while offering a larger menu to compliment the servings of cod, halibut, wild salmon and daily handcut chips made from locally-grown Kennebec potatoes.

"We are a fish and chips restaurant, but not only a fish and chips restaurant," Cheryl says.

The effort to get the business up and running is a source of pride for their parents, Winch and Janet, Cheryl says.

"My dad has lived here his whole life and is very proud of his family, what he has accomplished and what we're about to accomplish with our longterm dream," Cheryl says.

"I think a part of this is our dad's dream, too. We just brought it to reality for him." Lisa adds.

Part of that is the pride experienced in hanging a picture of their father's fishing boat on one of the restaurant's walls. And to come is a photo of their great grandfather, Chung Chuk, who came to Ladner in the early 1900s and farmed in the area.

"It's part of Ladner's history and people would like to see that," Lisa says.

Just ask siblings Darren, Lisa and Cheryl Chung who were attempting to keep their plans to open a fish and chips restaurant in the heart of the village under wraps. But the tightknit nature of the community managed to pry the Philip info out.

Raphael And now the trio are busy living their long-held dream that pays tribute to their family's historical ties with the harbour community.

"In Ladner, everyone pretty knows everyone," says Lisa, smiling, following the restaurant's "soft" opening a couple of weeks ago in the former Beanies coffee shop location on Delta Street. "People would come up to me in the grocery store and ask me, 'Hey, I heard you were opening a fish and chip place.'"

Lisa says that at first she'd have to smile and move on, not wanting to let the cat out of the bag.

But after plunging into the business that had them clocking very long days getting the 20-seat restaurant renovated, the trio, who all live in Ladner, is taking a deep breath and moving on to the next step—serving customers.

It's a day the Chungs have been dreaming of for many years to mark their father's three and a half decades in the local fishing industry.

It was also high time a harbour town like Ladner had its own dedicated fish and chips place, says Lisa.

"It's probably been about 10 years since Uncle Herbert's closed," she says.

"I feel like it's our time to bring that back to the community, Ladner is all about fishing and farming," adds

Jackson says Paterson Park not a priority, for now Purchasing Kwantlen's parcel of the park is not a prudent use of tax payers' dollars, says Delta's mayor MARIA SPITALE-LEISK REPORTER

The fate of Ladner's Paterson Park may not be decided until a new council sits, says Delta Mayor Lois Jackson In an interview with the Leader, Jackson said, from her perspective, Paterson Park will not be purchased by the municipality in the near future.

"There is something about leaving certain discussions for a future council," said Jackson.

Professional estimates, unverified by Kwantlen, put the assessed value of their parcel of land at approximately $11 million—a price tag that is too rich for Delta's blood given the size of the community, figures Jackson.

"Undertaking something that is not needed at the moment isn't prudent for tax dollars," the mayor added, citing pressures in other parts of Delta including an all-weather field request by a minor baseball association.

Kwantlen confirmed there are no offers on the table at the moment, but they are still interested in selling their piece of Paterson Park.

"Something of this size, as you know, it's kind of complicated. It's high profile and not something we would ever want to rush," said Joanne Saunders, Marketing and Communications director, Kwantlen Polytechnic University.

As it stands, Delta owns the western half of the park. Kwantlen Polytechnic University acquired the eastern 9.4 acres of the long-vacant harness racetrack at the intersection of Hwy. 17 and Ladner Trunk Rd. from the Delta Agricultural Society in 1993.

Recently, some community members have put pressure on Delta, in the form of a petition, to buy Kwantlen's share of the land which the university has indicated they would like to sell. The Paterson

Park for Deltans group would like to see the green space saved for public use.

Another player in the formal Paterson Park discussions is the Delta Agricultural Society who maintain that Kwantlen got the land for a bargain in 1993 —they paid $3.5 million—as part of an unwritten understanding that the site would house a postsecondary campus.

"The non-growth out in South Delta killed that [plan], said DAS president Peter Guichon.

When asked if Kwantlen is planning on offering compensation, Saunders would only say the university is aware of the agricultural society's position on the matter.

According to Guichon, Kwantlen has not closed the door on that discussion, and legal action is not an avenue the society is considering.

"No, we are not even talking about that. That's not the farmer's way of doing business," said Guichon.

The Corporation of Delta and the Delta School District have taken the final step in divvying up their shared assets, mostly park land, to create a clearer picture of their domains.

Blurred historical property boundaries dating back to the mid-1900s has led to confusion over ownership at 10 sites in Delta including Delview Park and the DSD's Resource Centre.

In the case of Delview Park, until recently, it was maintained by the municipality yet owned by the school district despite there being no educational facility on the property.

The last piece of the puzzle in the ownership anomaly is 10 acres of farmland—located on 56th St. across from the new Southpointe Academy campus—which Delta has now agreed to purchase from the school district for $1.2 million. This transaction secures the

site located in the Agricultural Land Reserve for long-term, soilbased farming.

"In the interest of preserving farmland we were able to forward [Delta] a piece at the foot of Tsawwassen," said Delta Board of Education chair Dale Saip. "It doesn't make sense for us to sit on a piece of property. The guidelines around disposal of property [are that] we are encouraged to offer them to municipalities first."

Meanwhile, eight other properties are being resolved as an even trade, resulting in zero net gain or loss of land for both parties. The remaining site, the Resource Centre at Highway 10 and 96th St., is to be consolidated for school district use.

Delta Mayor Lois Jackson praised the land exchange deal, calling it good for the future of the area.

"We did have a very large agreement which has worked for Delta and the [school] district for a long time," said Jackson. "We have just

tidied it up."

Saip said the school district undertook an extensive property inventory review, which involved staff analyzing land titles.

"There are [property] pieces there [Delta] were not aware they owned," said Saip. "This is the result of the municipality and school district working together to make things make sense."

As for DSD's new-found revenue, Saip said the $1.2 million would be set aside in a capital account for future projects.

"As far as expansion we don't really have a specific plan for that right now," said Saip. "When you have declining enrollment you have to find those resources that fit. [The money] does give us some flexibility in future."

Girl Guides cook up new version of and old campfire treat Michelle Ottens and April Doolan have tweaked the quintessential campfire treat recipe to delectable results.

Leave it to a couple of senior Girl Guides to grow tired of simple s'mores—a staple food of their summer in the great outdoors.

The Delta Secondary school friends, who regularly camp on Denman Island, add sliced bananas and cream cheese to their s'mores for more flavour and moisture.

"It tastes heavenly," reports Ottens.

Both the Rotary Club and the

Rangers will be on hand during the first of three, free Tsawwassen Outdoor Movie Nights presented by the Business Improvement Association of Tsawwassen.

The first movie is being shown Saturday (July 28) at Diefenbaker Park, projected on a three-storey high inflatable screen.

Other movies follow on Aug. 11, also at Diefenbaker Park, and Aug. 25 at the Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall.

Proceeds from the concession stand, which will be stocked with hot dogs, popcorn, pizza, pop and chips—and manned by local Rotary Club members like

Terry Day, who joined the Rangers to sample the s'mores—will be donated to the Ladner/Tsawwassen Rangers.

The events begin at 6:30 p.m. with games, activities, demos and food.

Around dusk is when the movie will start. Guests are asked to bring lawn chairs, blankets, flashlights, and bug spray.

In case of extreme weather conditions the events will be rescheduled. Check the Tsawwassen BIA website (shoptsawwassen.com) before you head out to the park for updates.

Banana and cream s'mores INGREDIENTS 2/3 cup Canadian cream cheese

8 graham crackers 2/3 cup mini-marshmallows

2/3 cup bittersweet chocolate chips 1 banana, sliced

DIRECTIONS Preparation: Spread cream cheese onto graham crackers. Garnish with minimarshmallows, chocolate chips and bananas.

3. Place s'mores in the centre of the parchment paper.

4. Fold sides of foil over the s'mores and seal the sides, essentially creating a tin foil tent.

5. Cook on the grill for 5-7 minutes.

6. Open up the aluminum foil and continue cooking until marshmallows turn a golden colour.

2. Assemble s'mores and place in tin foil tent.

3. Bake for 6 minutes, then open the tent and allow the marshmallows to brown for another 6 minutes.

BBQ method: 1. Preheat grill to a medium heat.

2. Spread out a large square of aluminum foil, adding a sheet of parchment paper on top.

LETTERS Protecting farmland A lot of news on agricultural issues has been surfacing lately, much of it confirming forecasts made years ago.

The Southwest United States are experiencing drought conditions.

The Farmland Defense League of B.C. tells us that B.C. currently obtains 52 per cent of its food supply from that region, and accordingly, we can expect prices to rise and shortages to occur. With only five per cent of B.C. land being suitable for agriculture, it should be obvious we cannot afford to pave one more inch of that land.

Results of a 30-year side-by-side trial of conventional and organic farming methods at Pennsylvania’s Rodale Institute show organic farming outperformed conventional farming.

Organic yields equalled conventional yields after a threeyear transition period. Even more important: organic corn yields were 31 per cent higher in years of drought.

This study found organic systems used 45 per cent less energy than conventional ones.

Soil health in the organic systems has increased over time while the conventional systems remain essentially unchanged.

Orga nic f ie lds increased groundwater recharge and reduced water run-off. A very important finding was the 30-year comparison showed organic systems are almost three times as profitable as the conventional systems.

None of these findings will be welcomed by large multi-national companies which market patented genetically modified seed and chemical fer tilizers. Large companies and investors have been purchasing agricultural land on the African continent.

Easing the traffic woes As lengthy lines of diverted traffic navigated unfamiliar parts of Ladner Monday (July 23) due to major accident that closed Hwy. 17, a Delta Chamber of Commerce resolution might just gain more traction.

Two years ago the local chamber called for a Highway Incident Management policy that would set up a dedicated response process to expedite clean up and investigation of road accidents on heavily used routes.

The idea is to help lessen the economic hit that happens when traffic comes to a standstill for long periods of time while police and road crews deal with incidents.

A Transport Canada study found congestion costs between $2.3 to $3.7 billion in total for the nine largest urban centres nationally, in 2002 dollars. In Vancouver alone the cost was pegged at $1 billion.

While the policy is not a knock on those who currently have to deal with the aftermath of any incident on the already congested roadways in B.C., the purpose was to help speed up that process and get the cars, truck and buses moving sooner.

To make that happen was the suggestion heavy equipment—a crane—be located in the Lower Mainland to lift large vehicles that may be involved in an accident. And police members investigating accident scenes could be transported speedily to the site of a crash by helicopter to eliminate delays.

The ideas met with approval from the B.C. Chamber of Commerce who made it part of its policy.

Commuters passing through South Delta would surely welcome anything that would speed up their drives.

With major arteries that are frequently choked with volume—let alone accidents—along Hwy. 99 and the Massey Tunnel, Highways 17 and 91, and River Road, the case could be made that South Delta would be a good place to locate a Highway Incident Management team.

Throw in the coming South Fraser Perimeter Road, and you add another compelling reason for such a move.

But it would undoubtedly be expensive. And where would the money come from?

That would likely be something you could mull the next time you are left idling in a long stream of traffic that has come to a grinding halt.

Along Arthur Drive, we found Tu l i p Po p l a r, t w o Mo n k e y Puzzles, native to Chile, and a clump of five Incense Cedars, a species from Oregon named for its fragrant leaves.

The walk ended among the holly trees and pear orchard on William Ladner’s original farm.

Our guided walk inspired us to think more about recognizing local heritage trees, perhaps through plaques, research about those who had the foresight to plant such interesting specimens, and care and placement of feature trees.

Beautiful trees make a huge difference to our quality of life.

hen you're hurtling through the air at about 230 miles an hour and are just 50 feet or so off the ground the last thing you want to be seated in is an aircraft purposely built to be unstable.

But that's just where South Delta brothers Keith and Vic McMann enjoy being.

And on Saturday (July 28) the pair of experienced aviators will show their skill at guiding their Harvard warbirds around an air race demonstration course as the Boundary Bay Air Show makes a return after a hiatus in 2011.

The pair—Keith is a retired commercial pilot who spent many years with Fletcher Challenge and Vic pilots Boeing 777s for Air Canada—are long-time campaigners at the National Championship Air Races held each year in Reno, Nevada.

And both are looking forward to showing spectators at Boundary Bay Airport what their vintage aircraft, which were built as military trainers, can do.

Historic aircraft Keith's crimson-coloured plane, called the Red Knight, rolled off the manufacturing line

on March 23, 1952. The name he labelled it with comes from the fact all the Harvards were originally painted yellow and Keith wanted to make his plane stand out.

And after doing some research he discovered the Red Knight was a Canadian aerobatic team that flew jets.

"The plane is 60 years old and they just keep on ticking. I think if someone looks after it like we do, it'll go for another 60 years," he says. "It's a well designed aircraft."

Well designed, that is, to be a handful for young pilots getting ready for active duty.

"It was designed that way because they didn't something that was easy to fly," Keith explains. "They wanted something that was demanding, because this was just a stepping stone from one of these up to the fighters like the Mustangs, or the P40s, Hurricanes, and at the end of the war, the Typhoons that our dad flew."

The Harvard's landing gear was narrowly placed and its centre of gravity was made a little high to provide the required dose of instability "If you are ham-fisted flying it, it will bite you," Vic says. "You'll be on your back, upside in a heartbeat hoping that you have altitude to get out if it."

It was their father, Vic, who purchased the

plane through Crown Assets in 1967 and it has been in the family ever since.

"When he (father Vic) passed away about 13 years ago I ended up with the airplane and it's been a great bird. Very reliable," Keith says.

Younger brother Vic, who was named after his dad, flies his black-painted Harvard that carries the name Gunslinger on its fuselage.

Vic chose a paint theme with six, distinctive black stripes under the wings to pay homage to their father's squadron.

"He flew the Hawker Typhoon for the RCAF, so all my markings are authentic."

The name Gunslinger is owed to the plane's heritage—they were often called Texans because Texas was where some Harvards were built.

"And the number 66, that's like a couple of six-shooters, so it all kind of works," says Vic who acquired his plane from its previous owner in Denver, Colorado, but it was initially a Canadian aircraft.

It was built in 1941 on Christmas eve, about two weeks after Pearl Harbour and ended up going to the Commonwealth pilot training program similar to the one run at Boundary Bay Airport during the Second World War, but was stationed in eastern Canada.

"This one actually had a machine gun

mount. And the guys who flew this thing actually went into battle," Vic says.

Competitive flyers Today, both mainly see action around a five-mile course in Reno, plus other air shows in and around B.C. The Reno course for Harvards in the T-6 category is marked by 50-foot high telephone poles with 45-gallon drums mounted on the top.

"Touch one of those and it will take your wing off," Keith says, adding the emphasis is on safety as up to seven aircraft can be jockeying for position on the course at the same time.

"We don't fool around. You can't afford to.

You touch wings and the ball game is over."

"It's as safe as it can be with our group of racers. It's very regimented and safety conscious. There's no messing around," Vic says.

"There's also a lot of trust in it because you're literally flying off each other's wing tip. You're low to the ground. There's no room for mistakes. And if there are, the results are usually catastrophic. That being said, everybody knows it and everybody flies accordingly to make it as safe as possible."

In the turns the pilot are pulling somewhere between two to two and a half Gs.

lons an hour during take off and at $8 a gallon the costs can add up very quickly.

"You just can't pull up to the fuel pump, fill her up and go flying every day," Keith says. "But it's a great airplane, and it's a great sport. I'd love to keep her forever, but the day may come in the future that financially you have to pass it on to somebody younger who can have as much fun with it as I've had."

As for Vic, this is possibly his last Reno race year, too.

"That's the million dollar question," Vic says. "I would love to continue doing it. Like Keith says, it's very costly. It's not like NASCAR where you have huge sponsorship which makes it viable to continue year after year.

This is a lot of money out of our pockets."

Both say they will certainly miss the opportunity to compete south of the border where they are a unique duo.

"We're unique in a couple of aspects," Vic says. "First, we're brothers, and we race in the same class. But we're also the only Canadians racing down there (Reno) in our class."

"It's lots of fun. I'm going to miss it," Keith says. "It's an addiction, without a doubt. Everybody loves to do it."

To fill the void Keith says there are always air shows to attend with the Red Knight. And the chance to fly locally at Boundary Bay is a plus.

"It's a great venue to bring people out to," says Keith, adding the show's organizers, Alpha Aviation have invested considerable time, effort and funds to make it one of the few remaining free air shows around.

Noisy fly by But it's the low, rumbling the planes make that will make many look skyward as they approach the air race course.

"You'll be able to hear the engine noise from here (Boundary Bay Airport) to Tsawwassen when we start to open them up," Keith says.

Propelled by 600 horsepower engines the group of five or six Harvards taking part, "will be like a noisy, buzzing bunch of bees," Vic adds.

That sound is expected to be muted after the next Reno event which this year runs Sept. 12-16.

"This is going to be my last year to go back to Reno," says Keith who has raced the Harvard for 14 years.

"Financially, you just can't keep doing it forever. And my family has put a big commitment to keep it going all these years."

It costs roughly $1,000 a day to attend the Reno Air Races once fuel, accommodation, ground crew, and meals are factored in.

At Boundary Bay, the course will be somewhat similar to Reno's, minus the poles and barrels. But the racing, despite being just a demonstration event, is expected to be thrilling for the crowd.

Stock Harvards top out at around 190 miles and hour.

The McMann brothers have tweaked their aircraft to break well beyond that.

Much of that performance is down to reducing drag.

"It's not like you have an overpowered race motor. It's the combined effort of all the little things you did," Vic says. "Each of them probably gives you about a quarter of a mile an hour more speed. And if you have enough of them, they can start to add up and give you an advantage."

Who knew that a casual chat between neighbours would turn into a three decades-plus long summer tradition in Tsawwassen.

But that’s exactly how the annual Antique Fair at the Tsawwassen Sun Festival started 34 years ago, says Malcolm Johnston whose father organized the event’s early years.

“My dad’s neighbour Waddy Watson was the chair of the Sun Festival 34 years ago and he came over one day and said, ‘Don, you collect antiques, can you run an antique show?’” Johnston said, adding the local event is now the longest-running antique fair in the province.

With the request coming about six weeks before the event’s date, Johnston said his father pulled out all the stops to get things organized with about a dozen or so antique dealers who signed up.

“It was a runaway success,” Johnston said, adding one dealer from Chilliwack made the trek back and forth five times to replenish his inventory, there were so many buyers anxious to spend their cash.

Tsawwassen’s SunFest Music Festival is building on its huge first-year success with local audiences and musicians last summer with an expanded Main Stage line-up at Winskill Park and more local artists at outdoor venues around town over the coming BC Day long weekend, Aug. 3 to 6.

Music Fest producer and local musician mentor Dave McIroy announced that the Main Stage performers will include the very hot blues-rock vocal recording talents of Vancouver’s No Sinner whose singer Colleen Rennison “absolutely blew the roof off” with Vancouver Jazz Festival audiences earlier this summer.

Expanding the festival’s Main Stage presence with hot new acts is a big part of McIroy’s long term plan.

“We’re all about growing the festival into a music experience that will put the SunFest Music Festival on the must-see summer festival list for audiences around the lower mainland,” he said talking about the cultural venture he launched as a new core of the annual South Delta SunFest celebration that’s marking it’s 40th anniversary this year.

“Getting hot new talent like No Sinner to headline on the Main Stage is a thrill, it sets the bar higher; it brings people into Tsawwassen and it’s a way to introduce them to some of our amazing local musicians,” said McIroy.

Sun Festival fundraiser Frisbee golf tournament proceeds to benefit playground Those taking in the Tsawwassen Sun Festival are familiar with the parade, the great music and food.

But this year there is something a little bit more in store to benefit local youth.

The Winskill Toddler Park Association and the TTown Disc Golf Club are joining forces to help raise awareness of the disc

golf course at Winskill and at the same time raise money for a new rope tower at the playground in Winskill Park.

The tournament will be held during the first day of the Sun Festival (Aug. 4).

Those interested in trying their hand at Frisbee golf for the first time can register for the tour nament as novices

($10) who will be paired up with a professional to give some advice and guidance during the tournament.

Prizes will be awarded for the top players in all divisions.

Substance abuse education facility busy in month after grand opening In the past month since the Little House Society officially opened the doors to its re-built home on 12 Ave. in Tsawwassen, the facility has been in big demand.

Society president Jim Stimson said there are currently seven groups holding a total of 15 weekly meetings in the building that promotes and advances education related to substance use, abuse, and addiction, and abstinence-based recovery from addiction.

Stimson said he is delighted to see things coming together.

"I am confident that in the coming months we will be able to make considerable progress in fulfilling our mandate and in meeting our commitment to provide valuable services to the communities of South Delta."

New Westminster takes two game lead in lacrosse semifinal The Delta Islanders were perched on the edge of elimination heading into Wednesday night's ( July 25) B.C. Junior A lacrosse semifinal round against the New Westminster Salmonbellies.

The Salmonbellies took the first two games in the best of five series against the Islanders, winning the first 14-13 Saturday (July 21) night at Ladner Arena, then taking the second 17-9 at Queen's Park Arena on Monday.

It took overtime for New Westminster to secure their first win last Saturday.

The event attracts about 70 youths each year in the 12, 14, 16 and 18-yer-old categories.

The public is welcome to watch the juniors compete. Matches are at Tsawwassen Tennis Club (286 English Bluff Rd.) and at Brandrith Park.

SOLO District gets city approval Appia Development’s newest community has been given the green light by the City of Burnaby to begin sales, which it did on Saturday, July 21.

“We’ve already had an overwhelming response from people all around the Lower Mainland about SOLO District,” says Appia President Jim Bosa. “We’ve had several thousand people visit our sales centre to preview the units over the past few weeks. We’re now excited to be able to start selling.”

The large dining room table sits in front of a fireplace, surrounded by windows to showcase the mountain all around you. A deck wraps halfway around the home, and an outdoor fireplace and hot tub will also be part of the grand prize.

The great room beside the kitchen has its own fireplace and curved windows, letting natural light pour into the home.

“It doesn’t feel like a show home,” says Harris. “I wanted to give it a cozy feel. The home gives you a hug.”

Outside, the home will fit perfectly into the mountain surroundings, with its rustic architecture and large windows. That rustic architecture continues inside. Homey stone walls, cork flooring and exposed wooden beams are featured throughout, really

giving you the atmosphere of being in a ski lodge.

“I started designing a dream house for people, but this is really my dream house,” Harris says. “It’s my dream (ensuite) bathroom, my dream bedroom, everything ... It was important that this home pulls at your heart strings. It has to make your heart go pitter patter.”

The Prize Home can be viewed at the PNE from Aug. 18 onwards, or on Aug. 5 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Tickets are $25 for 5 or $50 for 15.

PNE Prize Home makes your heart go pitter patter

The Pacific National Exhibition is bringing in the big guns for this year’s PNE Prize Home, built by Britco Structures and featuring furniture from Lane Home Furnishings.

The home was designed by Jillian Harris, a former star of The Bachelorette, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition and Canada’s Handyman Challenge. She will next be co-hosting Love It or List It Vancouver. Recently she has been busy designing homes all over the U.S. and Canada, but the PNE Prize Home is close to her heart after living in Kelowna and Vancouver.

“I wanted to do something locally,” she says, adding that it seemed like a fun project and she was looking forward to being able to have creative freedom to design the home, which will be located at the Sun Peaks Resort.

The over 3,000-square-foot house includes three bedrooms, three bathrooms and a 20-foot vaulted ceiling, among many other beautiful features.

Designing the PNE Prize Home presented a bit of a challenge for Harris.

“The home has to appeal to everyone,” she says. “It’s going to be someone’s home away from home.”

She took inspiration from the classic Hudson’s Bay blanket, and aimed for a shabby chic feel.

“I tried to integrate modern details,” she says. “I was able to be more whimsical and edgy with this home because it’s a vacation home, instead of something they’ll live in every day.”

And whimsical it is, with a dedicated sports room on the lower level with a ski-in ski-out entrance and a sleep loft featuring four bunk beds and an interior Juliet-style balcony looking over the bottom floor. The master bedroom is going to be seriously comfortable, with a walk-in closet and amazing ensuite bathroom with a huge soaker tub, glittery chandelier, dual vanities and a large shower stall.

A balcony is located off of the master bedroom as well, so you’ll have plenty of space to enjoy the view.

Downstairs, the kitchen is a gourmet’s dream, with stainless-steel appliances and lots of counter space.

The walk-in wine cellar is a work of genius, though Harris says it was a bit of a hard-sell for her crew.

“It has a real wow factor,” she says, adding that it’s her favourite part.

“

LOUIS, Brad Brad passed away July 13, 2012 at the age of 46. He leaves behind him Leeanna (Leah) and three teenaged children Rachel, Dominic and Patrick.

Brad was born in Weyburn, SK and also grew up in Moose Jaw and Swift Current. He studied at Briercrest Bible College, University of Saskatchewan and Regent College. He spent three years teaching high school in Caronport before moving to BC in 1996.

The family lived in Ladner and Tsawwassen since 2000.

He loved his children and wanted them to love living and to succeed in life. He enjoyed drama, reading, writing and intellectual pursuits.

We ask for your prayers for the repose of his soul and for the family as they move to a new life in Saskatoon. Rachel will be continuing her studies at UBC and flying. Anyone wishing to make a donation in Brad’s memory can contact Tsawwassen Air Cadet Squadron 828 Hurricane which played a wonderful role in shaping his daughter’s life.

We thank Dr. James Park and Dr. Glenn Ferris for their professional work in Brad’s life.

A funeral mass will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Ladner on July 30, 2012 at 11AM. Interment will be in Weyburn, SK at Hillcrest Cemetery on August 8, 2012 at 1 PM.

Air show touches down at Boundary Bay Airport

Aviation fans will get a chance to gaze into the great blue yonder July 28 when the the Boundary Bay Air Show touches down again after a one-year hiatus.

Construction of the new 80th St. overpass near the airport forced the show's cancellation in 2011, but organizers are raring to go this summer with a lineup packed with entertainment that is free to the public.

The event is produced in partnership with the Corporation of Delta and Alpha Aviation and will feature aerial acts, displays of vintage and modern aircraft, prize draws, food vendors, a beer and wine tent, and lots of activities for the kids.

Admission and parking is free and those attending are advised to bring lawn chairs to enjoy the show.

Pets are not permitted.

Gates open at 11 a.m. Air show begins at 1 p.m.

Settlement workers at a North Delta library advise immigrants about jobs, services and responsibilities

Boaz Joseph Reporter, Surrey North Delta Leader Having no knowledge about student loans when she first arrived in Canada in her late teens, Harvinder Sandhu worked four jobs to pay her way through college.

Although she spoke English fluently at the time, she might have saved herself years of stress as a newcomer if she had known more about available resources in her new country.

Today, Sandhu is the one giving advice.

A speaker of Punjabi who gets by in Urdu as well, Sandhu is an integral part in the Settlement and Integration Program offered at the George Mackie Library.

It's a service run by Options Commu-

nity Services for immigrant and refugee newcomers, giving them information about such things as local culture, the labour market and paperwork.

Sandhu says newcomers are often given incorrect advice by friends and relatives—with a potential waste of time and money or misdirected educational upgrades in pursuit of employment.

With a staff of 12-15 people who handle all sorts of questions in languages such as Arabic, Korean, Chinese, Spanish, Tagalog and Punjabi, the settlement workers—a term Sandhu admits is a bit vague—offer the type of advice that helps immigrants deal with a Canadian bureaucracy that can seem Byzantine.

Pony rides to help charity fundraiser East Delta's Pony Pals Therapeutic Riding Association has been selected to participate in the Canada Life 8th Annual Charity Softball Tournament July 27 with the goal of raising upwards of $80,000 for their charity.

Delta school district looks at covered fields Delta school district proposes building a pair of million dollar artificial turf fields on school property Maria Spitale—Leisk Reporter, South Delta Leader The Delta School District is proposing to build two, $1 million covered artificial turf fields—without using education dollars.

Increased demand from minor sports associations in Delta, which hold practices in the school district's gyms during the fall and winter months, is driving the proposal, according to Delta Board of Education chair Dale Saip.

"If you look at the sports like fastball, lacrosse, soccer and all the teams that use our gymnasiums regularly for activity, there is quite a wear and tear on the facilities," said Saip. "They aren't built to house practice facilities for outdoor sports."

The covered artificial turf field would measure 132 feet wide by 225 feet long with a ceiling peak at 45 feet high. Other features include a translucent membrane roof for optimal sunlight, and dasher boards with a chain link mesh around the perimeter of the facility. The school district looked at similar facilities in Penticton and Langley for inspiration.

Current plans call for one of the fields to be built adjacent to Delta Secondary School.

Saip stressed the importance of creating new facilities geared towards youth sports.

"I think there is a real need given the activity levels that go on around kids' soccer and getting kids started into sports and programs," he said.

"One of these facilities would have three mini soccer fields going crossways for three-on-three little kids' soccer and or practices."

Right now the school district is at the business plan stage of the game, which involves exploring corporate sponsorship.

And while the facilities will be open to community groups, the Corporation of Delta has not been approached to financially support the project.

"At this point in time, no, I wouldn't expect them to," added Saip. "Nor would

we ask them to at this point. It might make some sense down the road if we look at doing more of these [facilities]."

The community also shouldn't expect a corporate heavy hitter's name to be emblazoned on the side of the facilities.

"I don't think it would be named after a sponsor—it would be an extension of our school district," said Saip.

Still, he does consider the Bell Centre in the Surrey School District—a performing arts centre built adjacent to Sullivan Heights Secondary—a good model for sponsorship.

DSD deputy superintendent Garnet Ayres, who is spearheading the project, said the sports fields could create a steady revenue stream for the school district once they are paid off.

"You can put one team in a gym, but you could put three or

four teams in this facility. So you multiply it like that you start to realize that there is some economies with a larger facility," said Ayres.

Currently, youth sports groups pay approximately $22 an hour for use of the school district's gyms, which, according to Ayres, are booked solid five nights a week during the school year.

If everything falls into place for the DSD, shovels could be in the ground by the fall, said Saip, who estimates the facilities would take about six weeks to construct.

"If all the stars align maybe it's a Christmas present for the community," he said, adding that a business plan still has to come before the Board of Education for approval.

Young authors sought For the fifth consecutive year, Ladner writer and storyteller Laura Thomas is running a province-wide summer writing contest for aspiring young authors.

The contest is free to enter and open to any B.C. resident between the ages of 10 and 17. There is also a special incentive category for children six to nine-years-old.

Last summer, a record 80 stories were submitted from 16 municipalities across the province.

“We did well in 2011, but I’m hoping that this summer we will attract even more of those young storytellers out there who have been inspired by TV, movies, games, and websites to get creative and show their stuff.”

As in previous years, Thomas is

sticking to her rule of keeping the subject matter of the stories open and letting contestants decide what they want to write about.

“It’s always best to write about those things in life that make you feel something,” said Thomas. “It makes the hard work of crafting a well-told story easier when you love your characters and story problem.”

The contest is open now and closes Aug. 31. Entries can be mailed to JA Short Story Contest c/o South Delta Recreation Centre, 1720 56 Street, Delta, B.C., V4L 2B1.

"In the first week we did over 1,200 kg of French fries. That's a lot," Roberts said. "It was like Woodstock down here a couple of weeks ago there were so many people."

He admits there's been some delays in serving food, but explained the items are made to order.

"The idea was not to slap it together and bag up burgers," Roberts said. "We are producing quality food and want people to enjoy the experience."

Summer hours run from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

"Every day we are adding just a little bit more," Roberts said sitting at one of the tables on the sunny patio area.

"Things are falling into place, in terms of the kitchen. And once that gets into a routine, that's when we will focus on the other items."

So far the response from customers has been good.

Philip Raphael Editor South Delta Leader With 20 years in the restaurant business, Boundary Bay's Paul Roberts has had his fair share of opening day dramas.

But the ones he and his staff endured leading up to the opening of his new location— the Centennial Beach Cafe—were quite challenging.

First of all, delays with construction of the new facility right on the beach put plans on hold.

Then some problems with the building— power outages and a drain back up—and a computer system failure in the restaurant added to the woes as anxious customers lined up to enjoy a meal in one of Metro Vancouver's busiest parks.

Plans were to open in May and gradually get his operation slowly up to speed. But delays only gave him access to the building on June 19.

What followed was a hurried set up to open July 4.

"That's very quick for a new restaurant," Roberts said, who has 20 employees to run the operation.

"It's part of the game, and that's sometimes the way it goes," he said. "It wasn't the plan to open on the first gorgeous sunny day of the summer. But that's

Delta's only squash club in danger of closing

Members say the Bayside Squash Club in Tsawwassen has become run down since the new owners took over Last fall he sold the property in what he thought was a win-win situation.

An Asian businessman and Viktor Berg, the No. 1 mens' squash player in B.C. and former world No. 1 doubles player were partners.

"It looked like a perfect fit all along," said Tim. "Suddenly, Viktor was no longer in the picture."

At that point, Tim offered to stay on as manager of the Bayside Squash Club. His plan was to run it as a business and basically lease it back from the new owners, but he said he was turned

down.

The club is currently managed by the owner's wife who members claim has no experience running a business or interest in squash. The facility has also fallen into a state of disrepair.

The Leader's calls to the real estate agent and owners for comment on the situation were not returned.

According to Cherie, some of the remaining 130 members are taking advantage of the owners, who she says don't speak English very well, and not paying their dues.

Coaches keen on covered turf field plan

School District’s plan for covered turf fields creates a buzz among sports groups desperate for dry practice facilities Maria Spitale-Leisk Reporter, South Delta Leader Local sports teams are champing at the bit for covered playing facilities to be built in Delta.

The Leader’s informal poll of coaches and youth sport administrators in the community suggests the pair of artificial turf fields being proposed by the Delta School District would be coveted.

“I think it's a fabulous idea personally. Gyms aren't the best venue for a baseball program,“ said North Delta Blue Jays general manager Larry Waddell.

The B.C. Premier Baseball League team currently travels to Richmond and Surrey for indoor practices during the inclement weather seasons.

The Richmond Olympic Oval is one of the facilities the team rents, at a cost that Waddell says is a lot more money than a school gymnasium. And having an affordable and accessible baseball program is an important consideration for Waddell.

But choosing the right practice venue boils down to being able to have the room to swing a bat.

“The biggest issue in baseball right now—not just with us, but across the board—is hitting,” said Waddell. “Players aren't spending enough time swinging a bat.”

The Blue Jays GM has met with the captain of the covered sports field project, DSD deputy superintendent Garnet Ayres, to talk about the baseball team’s specific needs.

The plans call for four batting cages to be housed inside the 30,000-square-feet facilities. Waddell said the size of the fields is practically ideal for the Blue Jays program.

“The 200-foot distance is good for long toss. The width of [the field] is long enough to run an infield practice,” figured Waddell.

The Blue Jays senior and junior teams would fill up the covered sports fields’ sign up sheet four to six times a week in the wintertime.

A seasoned coach with extensive travel under his belt, Waddell chastised Delta for dropping the ball on creating adequate sports facilities.

“It seems to me, just generally right across the board, Delta has less facilities and poor quality athletic facilities for children and youth than facilities in other municipalities that I see around the province,” said Waddell.

Longtime Delta field hockey coach Neil McLennan echoed Waddell’s sentiments. The Delta Falcons have been campaigning for a dedicated field hockey specific turf in Delta for decades.

“Every artificial turf put in by Delta has been more geared towards soccer,” said McLennan.

“We've always been looking to upgrade Winskill Park to a field hockey field.”

The club has been collecting a turf fee as part of registration from its players for the last number of years and has about $100,000 saved to help pay for a portion of the estimated $1.5 million needed to construct a flat turf field.

Ken Kuntz, Delta's director of parks, recreation and culture, isn’t aware of any formal proposal from the Falcons.

“I don't believe that they [Delta Falcons] have approached us,” said Kuntz. “It's hard for us to consider something that is theoretical.”

He said the municipality is

open to solid business plans that involve corporate partnership. He points to the Tour de Delta, saying the annual cycling race has a significant amount of corporate funding.

On the subject of sports facilities in Delta, Kuntz is aware there are definite desires from the community, but chooses to focus on the inroads that have been made.

“Delta is rather blessed with a number of facilities. That doesn't mean that we don't look at the gaps and try to fill those in,” said Kuntz.

He cites the Ladner Sport Field Enhancement Plan, approved

by Delta Council last December, which includes a $3.8 million turf field at Dugald Morrison Park.

Indoor recreation in North Delta—which Kuntz said is not being supplied to the same level as it is in South Delta—is another area that is being addressed through the expansion of the North Delta Recreation Centre.

But the bottom line, said Kuntz, is municipal-funded recreation projects have to really benefit the community.

“Land is at a premium. We want to make sure it's being used 365 days a year and it isn't too restrictive,” he added.

Delta Sport Council president Barry Howard is praising the idea of covered sports facilities. “…I can say that anything that would be designed properly with specific sports in mind would be a welcome addition to our community," said Howard.

It's a daunting task when qualifications, language, education, resumes and Canadian employment regulations come into play.

"I have to get to know them a little bit."

Often, immigrants find highly regarded careers in their old countries mean little in Canada, and that educational challenges seem insurmountable in the short-term.

It's no urban myth there are Vancouver-area taxi drivers who were doctors in India, says Sandhu, adding many educated people formerly employed in respected fields end up in menial jobs.

While those coming from India have their challenges, some are from places such as Pakistan or Somalia and come from refugee camps.

They've had lives so unstructured, many of them list birthdays of Jan. 1 on government forms—meaning they don't know when they were born.

These immigrants are often advised to get used to making—and keeping—appointments.

"I'm still struggling with some of them," Sandhu says with a smile.

The settlement service started in 1992 with a handful of volunteers.

Delta's Heritage Advisory Commission awards scholarships The younger generation certainly has an appreciation for the past as Delta Council and the Heritage Advisory Commission announced this year's recipients of the 2012 Heritage Commission Scholarships.

Receiving $750 was Aaron Meier of Delta Secondary School who's submission, a video entitled The Delta Princess: A Historical Analysis, documents the last ferry which connected Ferry Road in Ladner to Woodward’s Landing in Richmond.

Alexander Gaio, also of Delta Secondary School, placed second in the competition, receiving a $375 scholarship for his creation of the website: Delta, A Vibrant Heritage, which is available at https://alex.gaio.me/ delta.

The website provides access to information, maps and photos of Delta’s noteworthy heritage sites.
