Spending summer at the lake Summerland has plenty of fine beaches for those who want to enjoy some time at the water. Sun-Oka Beach Provincial Park, at the south end of the community, is one of the most popular beaches in the Okanagan Valley. The park is spacious and has plenty of picnic tables, ample parking and shaded areas. A separate area is set aside for boaters. Powell Beach, in the northeast corner of Trout Creek, is a municipal beach which also has a tennis court and a recreation area. The beach faces north and when the wind is from the south, it provides a sheltered area to enjoy the sun.

Kin Park, on Lakeshore Drive, has a playground area for children. Gordon Beggs Rotary Beach, also on Lakeshore Drive, has change rooms and the restored Kiwanis Pier. The beach is close to the Summerland Yacht Club and the Trout Hatchery. Peach Orchard Beach, on Lakeshore Drive at Peach Orchard Road, has a playground area for children, a volleyball area, a shelter and a water park. For boaters, there is a public boat launch. For dog owners, there is a nearby dog beach area. Crescent Beach, at the north end of Lakeshore Drive, faces east towards Naramata. There is no parking at this site.

Come sail away Okanagan Lake is perfect for all sorts of fun on the water, from a day on the beach to swimming, sailing and waterskiing. ¡ Over 50 Cars on Display ay

Riding the rails The railway era is kept alive with the Kettle Valley Steam Railway. In addition to the regular train rides, the Garnett Valley Gang also holds train robberies on some of the rides.

Train provides heritage experience A ride on the Kettle Valley Steam Railway is also a trip into the past. The Kettle Valley Railway was originally designed to bypass Summerland. In 1910, James Ritchie, the reeve of the municipality, requested the rail-

way not to bypass the community. This request was turned down. Ritchie then surveyed the area, using a carpenter’s level, and designed a route that would pass near the present research station. This plan kept the

grade to no more than two per cent and shortened the route by nearly a kilometre. A steel bridge over the Trout Creek Canyon was built in 1913 and the first train crossed it on Oct. 25, 1913. The first train

passed through Summerland May 31, 1915 at 3:59 p.m.. It consisted of a steam engine and its baggage car, a first class coach and a sleeper. The last passenger train to pass through Summerland came through the community Jan. 16, 1964.

While CP refused to sell or lease to the railway society, in 1994, the province announced it would seek to purchase the line. The province announced the acquisition of the railway right-of-way on June 3, 1995. The railway

has been in operation since Sept. 17, 1995. Today, it operates two trains a day, Thursday to Monday, during the summer season. The locomotive is a restored engine from 1912 and the passenger cars date from the 1950s.

Although train service had come to an end, the tracks remained in place. In 1989, the Kettle Valley Railway Heritage Society was formed. The society acquired the 16 kilometres of track between Trout Creek and Faulder.

winning reds, whites and fruit wines for every taste. The area is a good place for growing early and mid season grape varieties. Today, much of the agricultural land in the community is in use as vineyards. Wine tours and wine tasting events are an important part of a visit to Summerland. In addition, many of the wineries will have special events and live music in conjunction with the Okanagan Wine Festival. Many of the wineries also feature works by local artists and artisans and entertainment by some of the top performers in the area. For a list of Summerland’s wineries, stop in at the Summerland Visitor Centre on Highway 97. For information on the Okanagan Wine Festival events, please visit thewinefestivals. com.
